ABSTRACT Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) has a rotating axis perpendicular to the wind direction. This type of wind turbine that is suitable for urban environments has low wind direction dependency and noise. In this research, a novel surrogated approach for optimizing a VAWT is proposed, used, tested, and verified, which is not reported in literature. The proposed method consisted of 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of wind flow through the wind turbine with FLUENT software by solving the unsteady turbulent equations. However, 3D CFD analysis was time and cost consuming to obtain the output result (power coefficient) from input values (airfoil chord length, pitch angle, and tip speed ratio as turbine design variables). Thus, artificial neural network (ANN) was applied to obtain weight functions to correlate FLUENT software inputs and outputs after learning process. Finally, genetic algorithm was used for maximizing the turbine power coefficient considering three defined design variables. The optimum value of power coefficient was improved to 0.244, and the optimum values of design variables for blade chord length, blade pitch angle, and blade tip speed ratio were 0.218, −0.453, and 1.24, respectively. This novel surrogated method reduced the computational time and cost of VAWT optimizing considerably.

ObjectivesThis study calculates and analyzes the flow field around the hull of a 210 000 DWT bulk carrier in order to perform hull line optimization with resistance and wake non-uniformity as the optimization objectives. MethodsComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to evaluate the initial hull lines, calculate the flow field around the ship and obtain flow field characteristics such as the wave pattern, pressure distribution, velocity distribution, etc. According to the CFD calculation results, an optimization strategy is constructed to form the modified hull lines. CFD calculation is then carried out on the modified lines to evaluate the optimization effects on resistance and wake non-uniformity. Finally, a model test of the optimized hull form's power delivery performance is carried out to verify the optimization effects. ResultsThe CFD calculation results show that compared with the initial hull form, the effective power of the modified hull form is reduced by 2.46% and the wake non-uniformity is reduced by 8.48%, while the model test results show that compared with the initial hull form, the delivered power of the modified hull form is reduced by 3.49%.ConclusionsThe proposed optimization method can obtain hull lines with excellent resistance performance and good wake field uniformity, giving it strong engineering applicability.

Modifications in classical Savonius rotor have extensively been studied in an attempt to improve turbine performance. The present work investigates experimentally and computationally the effects of combining two different blade shape configurations into a single blade shape design on the Savonius rotor performance. The concave and convex sides of Savonius rotor blade were made unsimilar in shape. Three rotor blades differ in configuration were experimentally and computationally tested including the combined blade. The computational results were primarily validated against experimental data and accordingly a suitable turbulence model was chosen. Among few tested turbulence models, the realizable k- turbulence model showed closest agreement with the measured data. The results of turbine performance indicate that the combined blade shows better performance than other models particularly at higher tip speed ratios. The maximum power coefficient of the combined blade is increased by about 10% when compared with other investigated rotors. This may be attributed to the blade shape effects on the resulting total drag force. Increasing the maximum power coefficient in addition to the operational range of tip speed ratio are expected when running Savonius turbine with the combined blade.

Manual welding operations are performed inside the engine room of a liquefied natural gas carrier under construction. The welders are at risk of exposure to welding fumes in case of poor ventilation. Therefore, ventilation fans are installed at shipbuilding sites to improve indoor air quality. Although ensuring the respiratory health of welders is important, studies focusing on ventilation in the ship engine room have not been conducted. Therefore, the ventilation efficiency was evaluated herein based on the placement of ventilation fans to alleviate air stagnation using a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model operating on Fluent. The mean age of air (MAA) was computed to assess the ventilation efficiency. In addition, particles with size and physical properties similar to welding fumes were sourced assuming 30 welders in the engine room. Results revealed that ventilation fan and/or exhaust in enclosed spaces contributes significantly to alleviating the MAA level. MAA and particle distribution did not correlate well due to the different properties of air and the iron oxide particle. Therefore, to determine the optimal ventilation fan displacement, particle motion should be studied along with performing MAA analysis. The proposed CFD model potentially guides to improvement of the working environments and respiratory health of welders.

The heat transfer improvement and the increase of heat exchangers’ efficiency represent a very important issue in the energy field. Many research projects have focused on the use of fluids with high thermal conductivity such as nanofluids. In this case, hybrid nanofluids, are a new class of nanofluids with good heat transfer characteristics. The present work falls within this framework and involves a numerical study to examine the influence of two oil-based hybrid nanofluids, Al2O3-MWCNT and MgO-MWCNT, with different volume concentrations and inlet flow rates. More to the point, the impact of different nanoparticle ratio and the location of hybrid nanofluid in a laminar flow of two-pipe counter-current heat exchanger have been investigated. In virtue of which, the results illustrate that increasing the volume concentration of nanoparticles and the flow rate of the hybrid nanofluid has a positive impact on improving the heat transfer rate. Therefore, the improvement in heat transfer rate reached 77.8% for Al2O3-MWCNT/oil hybrid nanofluid and 59.5% for MgO-MWCNT/oil hybrid nanofluid. Similarly, the study has also revealed that the preferred nanoparticles ratio for Al2O3-MWCNT/oil hybrid nanofluid is in the order of (25:75) and its circulation in the inner tube as a hot fluid makes it possible to improve the thermal performance of the considered two-tube heat exchanger to a greater advantage.

Abstract Coronary artery disease is the leading global cause of mortality and Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) is widely regarded as the gold standard for assessing coronary artery stenosis severity. However, due to the limitations of invasive FFR measurements, there is a pressing need for a highly accurate virtual FFR calculation framework. Additionally, it’s essential to consider local haemodynamic factors such as time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), which play a critical role in advancement of atherosclerosis. This study introduces an innovative FFR computation method that involves creating five patient-specific geometries from two-dimensional coronary angiography images and conducting numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics with a three-element Windkessel model boundary condition at the outlet to predict haemodynamic distribution. Furthermore, four distinct boundary condition methodologies are applied to each geometry for comprehensive analysis. Several haemodynamic features, including velocity, pressure, TAWSS, and oscillatory shear index are investigated and compared for each case. Results show that models with average boundary conditions can predict FFR values accurately and observed errors between invasive FFR and virtual FFR are found to be less than 5%.

Abstract The occurrence of fluid flow near a wellhead is the major concern of the petroleum industry, as pressure drop, loss of formation, and other variables of interest are mostly affected in this region. The fluid flows from the hydrocarbon reservoir to the wellbore can be characterized as laminar to turbulent; thus, it is important to model this phenomenon with the integrated wellbore-reservoir model. Using 3D Navier–Stokes equations, an integrated wellbore-reservoir model is created in this study, and it incorporates the formation damage zone. For the porous-porous and porous-fluid interfaces, the General Grid Interface (GGI) approach is applied in conjunction with the conservative mass flux interface model. Model equations are solved using a velocity-pressure coupling solver that is pressure-based. For reliable and quick results, the system of equations is solved using an algebraic multigrid approach. The pressure diffusivity equation’s analytical solution under steady-state flow circumstances is used to validate the model. The integrated wellbore-reservoir model is applied to different reservoir scenarios, for example, different production rates, formation zones, and reservoir formation conditions. The results indicate that the present Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model can be extended to simulate the real field scale model. integrated wellbore-reservoir modeling based on 3D Navier–Stokes equations with efficient computational techniques can lead the field of petroleum industries to advance current knowledge.

Due to their thermal performance, domed roofs are one of the passive solutions that affect energy consumption in buildings. The thermal performance of domed roofs has been investigated in many naturally ventilated spaces. However, few studies have discussed their performance in conditioned spaces. Therefore, this study introduces a computational comparison between domed and flat roofs to investigate their impact on thermal comfort inside a conditioned mosque. At an earlier stage, field measurements were carried out inside a Bahraini mosque to acquire its indoor air conditions during the summer period of 2021, in addition to validating the computational model. The findings of this study confirm that, under mechanical cooling conditions, the flat roof offers a lower indoor temperature than the domed roof by 0.4 °C and 0.1 °C for open and closed doors, respectively. Similarly, the air velocity is lower by approximately 0.01 m/s for both door modes. The overall PMV values of the flat roof are also lower by 0.07 and 0.01, while the PPD values are lower by 0.20, and 0.34 for open and closed doors, respectively. Based on these small differences, it can be concluded that the thermal performance of both roofing systems behaves equally in conditioned spaces. However, the air patterns are substantially different, the overall thermal performance is similar. This similarity drives building designers to rethink the thermal performance of the domed roofs in air-conditioned spaces with such a hot climate, regardless of their aesthetic and acoustical behaviour.

Fluid flows containing dispersed particles are abundant in both nature and industry. Simulating such flows, especially with high volumetric fractions of the dispersed solid phase, is challenging due to the complexity of solid–fluid and solid–solid interactions. In this paper, we introduce OpenHFDIB-DEM, an open-source software that couples computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with hybrid fictitious domain immersed boundary method (HFDIB) and discrete element method (DEM). The software is developed as an extension of the OpenFOAM library. The main contribution lies in a custom DEM implementation that is fully integrated in the OpenFOAM framework and allows for CFD-DEM simulations of various flows with arbitrarily shaped solids defined by triangulated surfaces in stereolithographic (STL) format.

One of the most expensive power system components is transformer. The correct use and health of the transformer increase the reliability of the power network.The transformer health is depend on careful planning for it. Therefore, hot spot temperature must be calculated for accurate transformer planning. Also, in order to increase the accuracy of transformer hot spot temperature estimation, the dynamic thermal model is used. On the other hand, the use of meta-heuristic algorithms has been less considered by researchers to calculate the transformer hot spot temperature. Thus, in this paper, the grey wolf, imperialist competitive and artificial bee colony algorithms are used to estimate the transformer hot spot temperature. Besides, electromagnetic analysis of the transformer is investigated using ANSYS-MAXWEL software. On the other hand, conjugate heat transfer modeling in the transformer is presented to compare the results with the grey wolf optimization algorithm. The results show that the grey wolf optimization algorithm can be a good alternative for transformer hot spot temperature estimation.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) in confined spaces like bank vaults and basements is influenced by complex factors such as building layout and HVAC systems. This study examines how mechanical ventilation impacts IAQ in a bank building's occupied basement vault, addressing significant challenges posed by pollutant exposure in these air-tight environments. This study advances safe IAQ in confined spaces, crucial for occupant health and safety, using CFD (ANSYS Fluent Workbench 16.0) and CONTAM 3.2 software for multi-zone ventilation and air quality analysis. It analysed three indoor pollutants: Radon (Rn), Carbon dioxide (CO2), and Particulate Matter (PM2.5), enhancing the reliability and applicability of the findings. The findings indicated that the simulated indoor pollutants concentrations did not exceed the indoor air quality guideline levels. The CFD simulations predicted average steady-state values of 27.2 Bq/m3 for Radon, 574.80 ppm for CO2, and 69.36 µg/m3 for PM2.5 in the basement. For different outdoor air floor rates, an optimal ventilation rate of 4.7 ACH and a cooling load of 17 kW were determined to maintain Radon concentrations below 15 Bq/m3. This provides a practical and actionable solution for maintaining safe IAQ in confined spaces, which is a significant step forward compared to similar studies. These results align with other experimental research, validating the use of numerical techniques in indoor air quality studies. By optimizing HVAC systems to maintain IAQ and minimize energy consumption, the study supports SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by enhancing energy efficiency, SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by reducing exposure to indoor pollutants, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by improving air quality management in confined spaces. The findings are particularly relevant for Africa, offering practical solutions, informing policy direction, and supporting the African Union's Agenda 2063 and SDGs 3, 7, and 11.

Boiling flow presents a significant concern, especially when a liquid surpasses its boiling point, potentially leading to catastrophic consequences. This research utilizes a two-phase code in the OpenFOAM software to investigate bubble formation during flow boiling. The well-established empirical models for calculating wall heat components were selected based on the operating conditions. The study incorporates experimental data from high-pressure boiling flow (10–30 bars) with variable properties of refrigerant R-12. The predictions reveal underpredictions in void fraction and liquid temperature compared to experimental observations. Significantly, the impact of the subcooling degree on void fraction behaviour is emphasized, and a potential underprediction of the evaporation portion is highlighted, particularly near the wall. Challenges in modelling bubble size distribution are evident through discrepancies in bubble diameter and velocity data, indicating the necessity for further advancements in the code. In summary, this numerical study provides valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of high-pressure subcooled boiling flow, especially when considering variable working fluid properties. Future efforts will focus on refining models for nucleation site density, bubble departure size, and lift-off frequency to enhance prediction accuracy.

Abstract Objective To review the existing literature on the application of computational fluid dynamics methods to study nasal particle deposition and to summarize and analyze the factors affecting nasal particle deposition in order to provide theoretical references for the development of future transnasal drug delivery devices and the prevention of respiratory‐related diseases. Data Source PubMed and CNKI databases. Methods A search of all current literature (up to and including February 2023) was conducted. Search terms related to the topic of factors influencing nasal particle deposition were identified, and queries were conducted to identify relevant articles. Results Both the properties of the particles themselves and the environmental conditions external to the particles can affect particle deposition in the nasal cavity, with particle deposition showing a positive correlation with particle size, particle density, and airflow velocity, with increasing subject age leading to a decrease in deposition, and with the relationship between airflow temperature and humidity still requiring more research to further explore. Conclusions With the popularity of computational fluid dynamics, more and more scholars have applied computational fluid dynamics technology to explore the influence of different parameters on particle deposition. By summarizing and analyzing the influence law of various factors on deposition, it can provide a theoretical basis for the future development and application of transnasal drug delivery devices and the prevention of respiratory‐related diseases, which makes a significant contribution to the optimization of clinical disease prevention and treatment. ObjectiveTo characterize the gas production phenomenon in the animal model of left ventricular assist device (LVAD), and study its mechanism.MethodsAn in vitro bubble precipitation experiment was conducted, and the blood samples of Parma spp. animals were divided into ordinary group and oxygen-enriched group according to whether they were oxygenated or not at the time of blood collection, and a static control group was set up respectively. Blood gases were drawn and analyzed before and after the experiment. Activate the pump, and the number of air bubbles in the loop was measured by ultrasound at different rotational speeds; CFD was applied to simulate the flow field in the blood pump, and pressure, fluid velocity vector and shear force diagrams were plotted, and a thrombus model was constructed and the flow field was simulated and plotted as a cloud diagram.ResultsThere was a statistical difference in the number of bubbles in the inflow and outflow tubes of the blood pump (P values of 0.04 and 0.023, respectively), and the number of bubbles in the outflow tubes of both groups was significantly higher than the number of bubbles in the inflow tubes. The number of bubbles in the tubes of both the oxygen-enriched and normal groups was significantly higher than that in the inflow group. In both the normal and oxygen-enriched groups, more gas was produced at higher speeds than at lower speeds. Blood gas analysis showed that the reduced gas composition in the blood was mainly oxygen. Flow field simulation results: the high rotation speed group had lower central pressure and greater scalar shear. The thrombus simulation group was more prone to turbulence, sudden pressure changes, and greater shear than the normal group.ConclusionBlood gas production is associated with higher partial pressures of blood oxygen, higher rotation speed, and intrapump thrombosis, and the mechanism of pump gas production is degassing of dissolved gases rather than cavitation of water, and the gas released is most likely to have oxygen. The degassing phenomenon is an warning factor for pump thrombosis.

This research aims to optimize the mixing process in gas-lift anaerobic digesters of municipal sewage sludge since mixing and maintaining uniform contact between methanogenic bacteria and nutrients is essential. Wastewater municipal sludge sampling was performed at the Ahvaz West treatment plant (Chonibeh, Iran) during the summer of 2022. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was implemented to simulate, optimize, and confirm the simulation process using ANSYS Fluent software 19.0. The velocity of the inlet-gas into the digester was determined and a draft tube and a conical hanging baffle were added to the digester design. Different inlet-gas velocities were investigated to optimize the mixing in the digester. Furthermore, turbulence kinetic energy and other evaluation indexes related to the sludge particles such as their velocity, velocity gradient, and eddy viscosity were studied. The optimal inlet-gas velocity was determined to be 0.3 ms-1. The simulation results were validated using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method and the correlation between CFD and PIV contours was statistically sufficient (98.8% at the bottom corner of the digester’s wall). The results showed that the model used for simulating, optimizing, and verifying the simulation process is valid. It can be recommended for gas-lift anaerobic digesters with the following specifications: cylindrical tank with a height-to-diameter ratio of 1.5, draft tube-to-digester diameter ratio of 0.2, draft tube-to-fluid height ratio of 0.75, the conical hanging baffle distance from the fluid level equal to 0.125 of the fluid height, and its outer diameter-to-digester diameter of 2/3.

Objective At present, the oil companies international marine forum (OCIMF) rules are frequently used to calculate wind load for large tankers and the American petroleum institute (API) rules for offshore platforms. However, due to the complexity of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) superstructures, whether these two sets of rules can be applied to the wind load calculation of FPSO requires further study.MethodsThis paper establishes a numerical model of a 300 000-ton class FPSO with a universal superstructure. The wind load on the FPSO under severe sea conditions and different wind angles is calculated and compared to the results of the rules. The shielding effect and heeling angle of the FPSO are analyzed. ResultsThe maximum heeling moment and wind load under an upright floating attitude appear at a 270° wind angle. The heeling moment and wind load under a heeling floating attitude are greater than those under an upright floating attitude, and the maximum heeling moment appears at a 10.5° heeling angle and a 280° wind angle. The results of the API and OCIMF rules show big differences compared with CFD: the differences between their results at a 270° wind angle and CFD are 13.6% and 24.5% respectively. Conclusion The flow field details obtained by numerical simulation are conducive to analyzing the shielding effect between superstructures and enhancing the accuracy of ship wind load prediction, thereby providing valuable references for the stability design of FPSO.

ObjectiveThis paper investigates the coupling effect of ship nonlinear wave load and transient high-amplitude slamming load in view of the whipping response of ships under extreme sea conditions. MethodsA two-way computational fluid dynamics-finite element method (CFD-FEM) fluid-structure interaction method is used to carry out the numerical simulation of an S175 container ship, and the results are compared with the test results and 2D linear strip theory. The testing of a segmented ship model with a variable cross-section elastic backbone is carried out, and the analysis of the bow's slamming load and high-frequency nonlinear whipping characteristics is undertaken based on the two-way CFD-FEM fluid-structure interaction method. The results are then verified through comparison with the model test. ResultsThe influence of wave slamming load on the whipping response of the bow cannot be ignored. The second order high-frequency component induced by whipping accounts for 59.86% of the low-frequency wave bending moment in sea state 6. ConclusionsThe proposed two-way CFD-FEM fluid-structure interaction method can calculate the whipping response accurately. The nonlinear wave-induced load and dynamic structural response of the ship under extreme sea conditions are affected by the transient slamming load of the bow. In conclusion, the high-frequency whipping response should be taken into consideration in the safety design and assessment stages of ship structures.

The aim of this research was to numerically reproduce bedload transport processes in channel bifurcations and thereby evaluate the methodology and feasibility of 3D-computational fluid dynamics (CFD) bedload transport simulations. This was carried out by numerically replicating two physical model investigations of channel bifurcations: research conducted by Bulle in 1926 and a large-scale channel bifurcation investigated at the Kassel University hydraulic laboratory. The numerical results were evaluated by comparing bedload distributions in the channel areas, formations of bedload depositions and development of bedload over time. The numerical simulations of Bulle's model were conducted for different boundary conditions, numerical parameters, sediment grain sizes, flow rates, flow distributions on the two channel branches and for longer running simulations. The investigations of the Kassel University bifurcation were carried out for different sediment types, which influences the numerical parameters, as well as for different flow distributions and channel width/depth ratios. Finally, structures for deflection of bedload into the straight channel were investigated. The results showed that bedload movement can be successfully simulated with 3D-CFD models, even in complex hydraulic conditions. Based on the obtained results, important indicators and recommendations for the application of 3D-CFD bedload transport simulations were acquired. Downburst is a type of near-surface short-term destructive strong wind that significantly affects wind-sensitive flexible structures like transmission tower-line systems. The existence of the tower-line coupling effect complicates the wind-induced vibration response analysis. Firstly, the average wind speed time history is obtained using the impinging jet wind field model, the pulsating wind speed time history is simulated using the harmonic synthesis method, and then the total wind speed time history of the downburst is obtained by superposition. Then, the transmission tower-line finite element model is established to carry out the wind vibration response analysis under different wind attack angles. Based on the most unfavorable wind angle of attack, the wind-induced vibration response and the coupling effect of the tower-line system are investigated under different maximum wind speed heights (Z $_{\max }$ ) and span distances. Finally, the range of wind load reduction coefficients for the tower-line separation system is given. The results show that under the most unfavorable wind angle of attack angle, both the displacement and acceleration response of the tower-line separation system are more significant than that of the tower-line coupling system. At Z $_{\max }=70$ m, the difference in displacement response between the two systems reaches the maximum, indicating an apparent tower-line coupling effect. As the span distance increases, both the displacement response and the acceleration response of the tower-line separation system increase. In contrast, the displacement response of the tower-line coupling system increases, but the acceleration response decreases. For the proposed design reduction coefficient for the transmission tower-line coupling effect under the action of the downburst, it is considered more reasonable to take the value between 0.83-0.95. This study provides some references for further optimization of the transmission tower design.

High power-density electric machines present the benefits of high torque and speed. However, this generally comes with heating problems characterized by high temperatures that affect performance. Conventional approaches to address overheating are to include cooling fans or jackets within the stator core of the machine. This approach is challenging to implement in small-size high power-density machines. In this article, a cooling mechanism integrated in the rotor of a high power-density permanent magnet motor is proposed. It comprises a set of six holes, shrouded within a hollow shaft. The mechanism is based on conditioning air due to a centrifugal force that is produced by the rotational speed of the rotor from the inlet. A theoretical model based on flow resistance network is proposed to analyze the airflow rate. An analytical thermal model based on lumped parameter thermal network is developed to analyze the effect of the flow rate on the temperature distribution in the motor. Also, a simulation analysis model was conducted using computational fluid dynamics to analyze the effect of air flowing in the motor. An experimental prototype is developed to verify, validate, and evaluate the proposed cooling model. The cooling system is effective in reducing temperatures from speeds above 6000 min−1.

Imitating Dolphin fish-like movement is productive method for enhancing their hydrodynamic capabilities. This work aims to analyze and understand the oscillations of tail fluke of Dolphin, which can be used as a propulsive mechanism for underwater fish robots and vehicles. The objective of the work is to achieve the desired oscillating amplitude by simulating the NACA 0012 profile using computational models and Set up the swimming movement of the dolphin, imitating a fish like model. Computational techniques were employed to examine the propulsive capabilities of the oscillating hydrofoil, inspired by the dolphin's biological propulsion. The evolutionary of fluid pattern in the field surrounding both Dolphin fish model and the NACA0012 hydrofoil, from initial motion to cruising, was established, and the hydrodynamic impact was subsequently studied. An user-defined function (UDF) was developed to create a dynamic mesh interface with CFD code ANSYS FLUENT for establishing the oscillations of Dolphin tail across the flow field. Influencing hydrodynamic coefficients such as lift and drag coefficients at different frequencies were also obtained. The findings shown that when the acceleration of the Dolphin fish model increases, the time averaged drag force coefficient drops because The wake field's vortex disperses to have some beneficial effects and pressure of water surrounding the fish head intensifies to produce a large resistance force. Simulation results show a 98% agreement at lower frequency and speed levels but a 5% deviation at higher frequency and speed due to turbulence effects in both models. It was established that the vortex superposition enhances the Dolphin fish like model rather than lowering its positive impacts. The Strouhal number, which is obtained by the fluid field's evolution rule, can be linked to the Kármán vortex street span with reverse.

ObjectivesThe tunnel catamaran is a special type of planing craft with two planing bodies connected in the middle channel. The central channel is lifted by a cyclone which can lift the hull off the surface of the water to achieve a higher speed. It has good rapidity and can quickly enter a stable state during high-speed navigation. The parametric design and resistance performance estimation of a high-speed planing tunnel catamaran play important roles in the development and design of catamarans.MethodsThe parameterized configuration of the hull is carried out by defining the main lines of the planing tunnel catamaran hull with a clamped B-spline curve. The influence of the channel size and deadrise angle of the catamaran on its hull resistance performance is then studied by setting multiple hull designs in STAR-CCM+.ResultsAn optimized hull design is obtained with 17.3% resistance reduction compared with the original.ConclusionsCompared with a planing hull of the same scale and displacement, this study proves that a high-speed planing tunnel catamaran has superior sailing performance under medium and high-speed working conditions.

A transient transport flow model is adopted in a renal bifurcated artery with different stenosis cases to examine the flow phenomena when the non-Newtonian blood flow regime within the three-dimensional space domain is chosen as a pulsatile nature. The nonlinear governing equations are solved using the Finite Element Method with suitable initial-boundary conditions. During numerical computation, distinct hemodynamic parameters including Wall shear stress, Reynolds number, power law index are evaluated based on different stenosis severities (0%, 25%, and 50%) and stenosis lengths (0mm, 0.5mm, and 1mm). For 0%, 25%, and 50% stenosis, the approximate values of velocity and pressure profiles are estimated at t = 5s at various positions, and achieved the highest velocities that were around 0.07m/s, 0.08m/s, and 0.13m/s respectively. The unsteady response of the stress due to stenosis-induced shear on the outside wall is described as a result of stenosis at t = 0.1s, 0.2s, 5s. The flow is severely restricted by constriction, which increases wall movement and produces stress, depending on the amount of stenosis. As pulsatile flow time increases due to the presence of stenosis, the wall shear stress decreases gradually. The impact of Reynolds numbers on pressure profiles and velocity profiles are displayed for Re = 100, 300, 500, and 700, and found that both velocity and pressure outlines increase significantly. In order to identify the flow phenomena, the influences of the power law index for n = 0.1, 0.3568, 0.5 are presented on the velocity and pressure profiles. Shear-thinning flow occurs for 0

Open canals are one of the most common and cost-effective methods in water supply networks; they are widely used in different industries such as agriculture, water and sewage treatment, urban drainage, pisciculture and water parks. Due to global warming, the demand in clean energy to replace fossil fuels has caused using water turbines in riverbeds and aqueducts to be important. On this basis, optimizing key parameters such as flow motion and canal turbulence is crucial to reduce breakdowns while designing canals. In fact, the inappropriate adjustment of velocity and pressure within the canals may lead to the system failure: imbalance between inlet and outlet will increase the water level and the pressure on canal walls thus, leading to breakdown. In this paper, a circular open canal was designed for a pisciculture system. The velocity and height of the water canal is controlled by the canal inlet and outlet system and the water flows continuously inside the canal. By keeping the canal water volume constant in any time and the flow motion with constant velocity, the system makes the fishes feel infinite movement. Furthermore, the water particles and impurities (e.g., food and fish feces) are removed by the outlet from the canal bottom, transferred to the filtration system, and returned to the fish farm by the canal inlet after the filtration procedure; the mentioned technique causes the water canal to be kept at its optimal level. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been used to simulate the canal flow. Solving the Navier-Stokes equations numerically and assuming incompressible, unsteady, and two-phase flow, the parameters of the canal flow were extracted. Also, by mounting the system outlet along the path of water movement, greatly reduces the adverse effects of the outlet suction force on the canal main flow. Moreover, by dividing the canal inlet with guide vanes, the inlet has been modified for the entrance of the clean water simultaneously with the distribution of the inlet flow to several smaller flows in order to make the canal water continue to move continuously without any turbulence.

In this paper, an advanced three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to analyse the steady-state hydrodynamics of laminar flow through an extended partial blockage (PB) in a pressurised pipe. PB corresponds to one of the main faults affecting pipelines. In fact, it reduces its carrying capacity with economic consequences, and as it does not give rise to any external evidence, its detection can be very challenging. The performance of the model is evaluated by comparing the numerical results with the available experimental data from the literature. Subsequently, the velocity and pressure distributions are analysed, and the main features of the flow field are described in terms of both local and global dimensionless parameters. Furthermore, the behaviour of the discharge coefficient is also investigated. The obtained results confirm that steady-state measurements can identify the presence of PB and follow its evolution over time but cannot detect its location and size. On the other hand, the location and severity of PBs can be provided by means of transient tests. A computational study of the nitrogen purging of a solid oxide fuel cell stack enclosed in a hot box is presented. The stack operates on ammonia as a fuel, and in the case of a hydrogen leakage, the entire compartment is immediately purged with nitrogen to ensure that there are no regions with high oxygen concentrations. In addition to this, the speed at which a hydrogen leak can be detected is determined. The results are then compared to a case with a relocated nitrogen inlet. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is developed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations for compressible flow in combination with conservation of energy and species equations in OpenFOAM. The results suggest that for the maximum concentration of oxygen to be below 5%, the hot box should be purged for 35 s, corresponding to 1.1 kg of nitrogen, if the hot box was already heated. If the hot box was at T = 300 K, it should be purged for 95 s, corresponding to 3.0 kg of nitrogen. The purge of the heated hot box results in a heat loss of 18 kW on average. A leak could be detected in 3.2 s during open circuit voltage tests. Changing the location of the outlet does not affect the cold purge, but results in a minimum purge period of 48 s during the hot purge, and the leak could be detected in 2 s. This paper demonstrates how CFD methods can be employed in order to address questions related to hydrogen safety.

Nowadays, the process of urbanization is accelerating, and the density of buildings is increasing rapidly. Natural ventlation is an energy-saving way of building ventilation and to solve the issue of building overheating. The buildings are all considered as cubes and their arrays are evenly distributed. The results from nearly 100 cases show density is the main factor in uniform arrays and not much difference between the staggered and normal arrangements if consider a year. The method can reflect the ventilation capacity of the buildings, which is somewhat inverse to the air age but different meaning. It can be used to guide the layout and planning in early design stage.

Abstract Objective Use of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations to measure the changes in upper airway geometry and aerodynamics during (a) an episode of Exercise‐Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO) and (b) speech therapy exercises commonly employed for patients with EILO. Methods Magnetic resonance imaging stills of the upper airway including the nasal and oral cavities from an adult female were used to re‐construct three‐dimensional geometries of the upper airway. The CFD simulations were used to compute the maximum volume flow rate (l/s), pressure (Pa), airflow velocity (m/s) and area of cross‐section opening in eight planes along the vocal tract, separately for inhalation and exhalation. Results Numerical predictions from three‐dimensional geometrical modeling of the upper airway suggest that the technique of nose breathing for inhalation and pursed lip breathing for exhalation show most promising pressure conditions and cross‐sectional diameters for rescue breathing exercises. Also, if EILO is due to the constriction at the vocal fold level, then a quick sniff may also be a proper rescue inhalation exercise. EILO affects both the inspiratory and the expiratory phases of breathing. Conclusions A prior knowledge of the supraglottal aerodynamics and the corresponding upper airway geometry from CFD analysis has the potential to assist the clinician in choosing the most effective rescue breathing technique for optimal functional outcome of speech therapy intervention in patients with EILO and in understanding the pathophysiology of EILO on a case‐by‐case basis with future studies. The noise reduction effect of noise barriers has been extensively studied, but the effect on pollutant dispersion remains unclear. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is conducted to investigate the effects of different heights, lengths, and types of noise barriers and different wind speeds on pollutant dispersion in street canyons with viaducts. The field synergy theory of the convective mass transfer process is used for quantitative analysis of pollutant dispersion in street canyons. The results show that as the height and length of the noise barrier increase, the pollutant dispersion capacity decreases. As the wind speed increases, the rate of decrease in the average CO concentration declines. The effect of the wind speed on the synergistic improvement of the speed and concentration gradient vectors differs for different types of noise barriers. The performance follows the order: fully-closed noise barrier > left noise barrier > right noise barrier > semi-closed noise barrier. The different noise barrier types significantly impact the flow field and pollutant dispersion and reduce the CO concentration to varying degrees, except for the fully-closed type. The average CO concentration in the pedestrian breathing zone is reduced by a maximum of 55.85% on the leeward side and by 53% on the windward side, indicating that an appropriate noise barrier on the viaduct reduces noise pollution and improves the air quality in street canyons, especially in the pedestrian breathing zone.

The impact of tropical cyclones on the operation of bridges and railways are mostly dependent on the forecast wind speed trend (upward, downward or staying steady) at present in Hong Kong. There are requests to forecast the exceedance of wind speed thresholds for such operations with a lead time of many hours ahead. This study considers the technical feasibility of forecasting the wind speed along a recently built bridge in Hong Kong with a coupled mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP)–computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. This bridge features numerous anemometers where the coupled model can be verified. It is found that these two tropical cyclone cases are very challenging, especially in representing the wind structure of the cyclone because of its relatively small circulation. As such, the timing of the maximum wind could be 2 to 4 h earlier than the actual observation. The maximum wind speed from CFD modeling could be higher than that from the NWP model alone by 5 to 10 m/s, which shows that CFD modeling could add value in the forecasting of wind speed exceedance, although the maximum simulated value is still lower than the actual observation by as much as 10 m/s. As a result, while the general wind speed trend may be forecast, the exceedance of definite values of wind speed limits is still practically rather challenging, given the present two cases of tropical cyclones.

This review paper provides an overview of recent advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of ejector pumps for vacuum generation. It examines various turbulence models, multiphase flow approaches, and numerical techniques employed to capture complex flow phenomena like shock waves, mixing, phase transitions, and heat/mass transfer. Emphasis is placed on the comprehensive assessment of flow characteristics within ejectors, including condensation effects such as nucleation, droplet growth, and non-equilibrium conditions. This review highlights efforts in optimizing ejector geometries and operating parameters to enhance the entrainment ratio, a crucial performance metric for ejectors. The studies reviewed encompass diverse working fluids, flow regimes, and geometric configurations, underscoring the significance of ejector technology across various industries. While substantial progress has been made in developing advanced simulation techniques, several challenges persist, including accurate modeling of real gas behavior, phase change kinetics, and coupled heat/mass transfer phenomena. Future research efforts should focus on developing robust multiphase models, implementing advanced turbulence modeling techniques, integrating machine learning-based optimization methods, and exploring novel ejector configurations for emerging applications.

Wind energy is essential for sustainable energy development, providing a clean and reliable energy source through the wind turbine. However, the vortices and turbulence generated as wind passes through turbines reduce wind speed and increase turbulence, leading to significant power losses for downstream turbines in wind farms. This study investigates wake characteristics in wind turbines by examining the effects of different scale ratios on wake dynamics, using both experimental and numerical approaches, utilizing scaled-down models of the Aeolos H-20 kW turbine at scales of 1:33, 1:50, and 1:67. The experimental component involved wind tunnel tests in an open-circuit tunnel with adjustable wind speeds and controlled turbulence intensity. Additionally, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted using STAR-CCM+ (Version 15.06.02) to numerically analyze the wake characteristics. Prior to the simulation, a convergence test was performed by varying grid density and y+ values to establish optimized simulation settings essential for accurately capturing wake dynamics. The results were validated against experimental data, reinforcing the reliability of the simulations. Despite minor inconsistencies in areas affected by tower and nacelle interference, the overall results strongly support the methodology’s effectiveness. The discrepancies between the experimental results and CFD simulations underscore the limitations of the rigid body assumption, which does not fully account for the deformation observed in the experiment.

Wind resistance optimization is crucial for enhancing the rotational speed of supergravity centrifuges. We conducted a study using computational fluid dynamics on the Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility (CHIEF) under construction at Zhejiang University and validated it experimentally using a ZJU400gt centrifuge. Our findings indicate significant reductions in wind resistance through structural modifications of the CHIEF. Reducing the outer radius from 4650 to 4150 mm decreased wind resistance by 16%, primarily due to reduced effective viscosity in the wake region’s gases. More substantial reductions were achieved by lowering the height of the outer wall from 2200 to 1400 mm, which cut wind resistance by 25%. This height reduction suppressed vortex shedding and Kármán vortex street development via the Venturi effect. Adjustments to the roughness height of wall surfaces further decreased wind resistance, with minimal impact from arm roughness. A critical roughness height was identified, below which no further reductions in wind resistance could be attained. Notably, using disc-shaped arms reduced wind resistance by approximately 73% because of their minimal pressure–resistance components and predominant frictional resistance, highlighting their potential in future high-speed centrifuge designs.

In 2021, the Ingenuity helicopter performed the inaugural flight on Mars, heralding a new epoch of exploration. However, the aerodynamics on Mars present unique challenges not found on Earth, such as low chord-based Reynolds number flows, which pose significant hurdles for future missions. The Ingenuity’s design incorporated a Reynolds number of approximately 20,000, dictated by the rotor’s dimensions. This paper investigates the implications of flows at a Reynolds number of 50,000, conducting a comparative analysis with those at 20,000 Re. The objective is to evaluate the feasibility of using larger rotor dimensions or extended airfoil chord lengths. An increase in the Reynolds number alters the size and position of Laminar Separation Bubbles (LSBs) on the airfoil, significantly impacting performance. This study leverages previous research on the structure and dynamics of LSBs to examine the flow around a cambered plate with 6% camber and 1% thickness in Martian conditions. This paper details the methods and mesh used for analysis, assesses airfoil performance, and provides a thorough explanation of the results obtained.

In order to solve the problem of the lack of maneuverability of the conventional underwater glider, this paper proposes a hybrid-driven underwater glider equipped with a Kappel tip rake propeller, analyzes the propulsion performance of different types of Kappel tip rake propellers in the wake field of the hybrid-driven underwater glider, optimizes the overall propulsion performance of the hybrid-driven underwater glider, and realizes self-propulsion and gliding with high efficiency and low energy consumption. In the research process, the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation model and the cavitation simulation strategy of VOF two-phase flow were adopted, coupled with the SST k-ω and γ transition turbulence model, and the control calculation error was not more than 3%. Based on the hydrodynamic performance study of the Kappel tip rake propeller, the self-propelled simulation was carried out under the working conditions of 6 kn, 5 kn, 4 kn, and 3 kn, and the gliding simulation was carried out under the working conditions of 1 kn, 0.5 kn, and a glide angle of 12°. The propulsion performance of the hybrid-driven underwater glider with different models of Kappel tip rake propellers was analyzed. It was found that the maximum open water propulsion efficiency of the propeller Kap05 had the largest improvement, which was 3.07% higher than that of the reference base propeller. Under the self-propelled condition, the hybrid-driven underwater glider with the propeller Kap05 had the lowest wake fraction, and the propellers Kap04 and Kap05 had the best propulsion performance in the wake field of the hybrid-driven underwater glider. In the gliding condition, the form of the folding paddle can reduce the gliding resistance generated by the propeller by more than 45% and the gliding negative lift by more than 68%. A moderate tip rake can effectively improve the propulsion efficiency of the Kappel tip rake propeller in the wake field of the hybrid-driven underwater glider, reduce energy loss, and improve the overall performance of the hybrid-driven underwater glider.

BackgroundThe passive cooling system for the reactor cavity of the molten salt reactor (MSR) is an important guarantee to ensure the safe operation of the reactor, is one of the four engineered safety features for the MSR, and its structure design is an important part of the thermal hydraulic design.PurposeThis study aims to find out a suitable passive reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS) to meet the requirements of thermal shielding design for the lower reactor cavity of the MSR, and maximize the removal of reactor core decay heat under accident conditions.MethodsFirstly, based on the design parameters of a 153 MWt MSR, a 1/4 geometric model of the lower reactor cabin of this MSR was established. Then, ANSYS FLUENT 20.1 software was employed to conduct three-dimensional numerical simulation of the flow filed and temperature filed for the lower reactor cabin, the influence of thermal shielding of the lower cavity was analyzed by changing the structure and layout of the passive RCCS, the structure sizes of the passive RCCS with double channel, the thickness of thermal insulation cotton on the intermediate thermal shielding plate and the position of the air inlet pipe. Finally, a new and suitable structure of passive RCCS was proposed after step-by-step improvements for a 153 MWt MSR.ResultsThe simulation results show that the optimized new-style passive air-cooling system with a double channel in the lower reactor cavity is the best among the three structures. Changing the width of the RCCS has little effect on the thermal shielding results of the lower reactor cabin whilst increasing the thickness of thermal insulation cotton on the intermediate thermal shielding plate of the RCCS can significantly reduce the temperature of the inner surface of the concrete wall. The closer the inlet position of the air inlet pipe is to the top of the RCCS, the better the thermal shielding effect. Based on above results, a new-style passive air-cooling system with double channel in the lower cavity is designed to completely dsatisfy the requirements for shielding cooling for the lower reactor cavity of a 153 MWt MSR.ConclusionsThe results of this study provide an important reference for the further engineering optimization design of passive residual heat removal system in the hundred megawatt-scale molten salt reactor.

The aerodynamic behavior of a square-shaped formation of four quadcopter UAVs flying in a swarm is investigated in detail through three-dimensional computer simulations utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology. The swarm configuration comprises four UAVs positioned with two in the upper row and two in the lower row along the same propeller axes. The flow profile generated by the UAV propellers rotating at 10,000 revolutions per minute is analyzed parametrically using the Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) technique. UAVs within the swarm are positioned at 75 cm from the motion centers of adjacent propellers. This distance, the effects of horizontally and vertically positioned UAVs on each other, and the collective behavior of the swarm are thoroughly examined. Pressure, velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy values are meticulously analyzed. This research represents a milestone in understanding the aerodynamic characteristics of UAV swarms and the optimization of swarm performance. The findings highlight effective factors in swarm flights and their consequences for UAVs. Additionally, the article describes the “near-UAV phenomenon”. Furthermore, the methodology developed for CFD simulations provides an approach to analyzing close flight scenarios and evaluating their performance in various swarm configurations. These achievements contribute to the future development of UAV technology.

The study investigated how variations in pressure ratio affect the leakage flow of a brush seal for both contact and clearance structures, in which the clearance is measured as the distance between the bristles tip and the rotor surface. This investigation utilized the Reynolds-Averaged-Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations alongside a two-dimensional axisymmetric anisotropic porous medium model. To verify the model’s accuracy and dependability, the obtained results were compared with previous numerical results and experimental observations, showing a satisfactory level of agreement. The results indicate that the predominant pressure drop occurs downstream of the bristle pack with the clearance model exhibiting a higher leakage rate compared to the contact model. Leakage increases proportionally with the pressure ratio, while axial velocity gradually rises and radial velocity experiences a significant increase. In conclusion, the leakage in the brush seal contact structure is significantly lower than in the clearance structure, resulting in the best performance.

Computational techniques can be applied to numerically assess key parameters influencing the biotechnological process to better predict the essential features governing macroalgae growth and nutrient removal in aerated tanks, e.g., integrated into multitrophic aquaculture systems. Recent advances in computational hardware and software, such as the discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) codes, have enabled flow simulations in biotechnological systems. Here, we perform CFD-DEM simulations of macroalgae motion within aerated tanks to assess the light–dark cycle period as one of the most critical abiotic conditions governing the growth of photosynthetic organisms. This proof-of-concept study, which deals with the challenging problem of the fluid–structure interaction in aerated (bubbled) tanks with a highly flexible solid phase, includes a set of detailed 2D CFD simulations for two types of settings differing in the presence or absence of an inner cylinder assembly. Consequently, corresponding regression models for the cycle period are derived, and the initial hypothesis of the assembly’s beneficial role is confirmed. Eventually, the CFD results are verified using an image processing technique on the laboratory scale tank with Ulva sp. and specific 3D CFD-DEM simulations.

The nozzle guide vane, which is a stationary part of a gas turbine, is a critical component of gas turbine engines because it must operate under harsh conditions with high pressure and temperature. Unfortunately, when a gas turbine runs for a long time, the turbine vane is subjected to repeated thermal load. This increases the possibility of fatigue damage and crack failure, thereby reducing the vane material's lifespan. In practice, the risk of failure at the trailing edge (TE) of a turbine vane is very high due to the reasons of shape configuration and cooling performance. The TE damage disturbs the flow physics of compressible air passing the vane TE, resulting in flow phenomena and heat convection. The study aims to numerically investigate the effects of damaged surfaces at the TE of a turbine vane on its flow behavior using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the SST k-w turbulence model. To simplify the simulation, the effects of the TE failure are presented by using two basic patterns, i.e., long (continuous) cutback damage, and two-short (discrete) cutback damage. To complete the investigation, a further study on the effects of repaired surfaces is included as well. The numerical results show the effects of damaged and repaired surfaces on flow behavior, particularly the vortex formation and the level of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in the TE region. Specifically, the damaged vane surface significantly increases the TKE level in the TE region, particularly the two-short damaged surface, which TKE shoots up to 7000-8000 m2/s2. Meanwhile, TKE in the normal and long damaged case is around 1500 and 4000 m2/s2. With the restoration of the vane surfaces, it can reduce the TKE level in the TE region. For instance, TKE is uniformly around 1750 m2/s2 for the long repaired surface.

Objectives: This study aims to delineate the specific impact of using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and 3D virtual surgery techniques in otolaryngology surgery, focusing on their roles in enhancing the precision of nasal surgery and optimizing future patient outcomes. The central objective was to assess whether these advanced technologies could reduce variability in surgical approaches and decision-making among specialists, thereby improving the consistency and efficacy of patient care in cases of nasal obstruction. Methods and results: Our methodology involved a detailed analysis of pre- and post-operative scenarios using CFD feedback. Six otolaryngologists participated, employing virtual surgery techniques on two patients with diagnosed nasal obstruction. The CFD analysis focused on quantifying key airflow parameters: right nasal flow rate (QR), left nasal flow rate (QL), flow symmetry (Ф), and bilateral nasal resistance (R). These parameters were meticulously compared before and after the application of CFD feedback to evaluate changes in surgical planning and outcomes. Quantitative analysis revealed a notable decrease in the standard deviation of the measured parameters among the specialists post-CFD feedback, indicating reduced variability in surgical approaches. Specifically, for Patient #1 the standard deviation for QR values dropped from 0.694 L/min to 0.602 L/min, and for QL values from 0.676 L/min to 0.584 L/min, and for Patient #2, the standard deviation for QR values decreased from 2.204 L/min to 0.958 L/min, and for QL values from 2.295 L/min to 1.014 L/min. Moreover, the variability range, represented by the differences between the maximum and minimum values for Ф and R, diminished significantly. Post-operative average values for all parameters showed a convergence towards ideal basal levels, suggesting a more uniform and effective surgical strategy across different surgeons. Conclusions: Both integration of CFD and 3D virtual surgery techniques in otolaryngology can substantially reduce variability in surgical planning and decision-making, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes. These advanced tools have the potential to standardize the diagnosis and treatment of nasal pathologies, contributing to more effective and consistent care. Future research in this area should focus on larger patient cohorts and further exploration of the potential benefits and applications of CFD and virtual surgery in otolaryngology.

Background: Contrast retention (CR) is an important predictor of left atrial appendage thrombus (LAAT) and stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). We sought to explore the underlying mechanisms of CR using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. Methods: A total of 12 patients with AF who underwent both cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) before left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) were included in the study. The patients were allocated into the CR group or non-CR group based on left atrial appendage (LAA) angiography. Patient-specific models were reconstructed to evaluate time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), relative residence time (RRT), and endothelial cell activation potential (ECAP). In this paper, phase change material (PCM) based hybrid thermal management strategies are proposed for cylindrical Lithium-ion battery modules. Experimental and numerical studies are conducted to analyze the proposed strategies at a high discharge rate of 7 C. Three different types of thermal management configurations are developed. In all the configurations primary coolant is the PCM and secondary coolants are liquid and air. In one of the configuration vertical liquid coolant channels are placed between the PCM and airflow at the top of the cells. Whereas, in the two configurations different designs of cold plates are utilized in place of liquid channels. The experimental studies are conducted to obtain the temperature and heat flux profiles of the battery module. Moreover, a numerical model is developed and validated using the experimental data obtained. Using the numerical model, the thermal performance of the battery module was obtained for the proposed strategies. Based on the results, the maximum temperature of the battery module was limited to 29.1 °C and a high temperature uniformity was achieved by the end of the discharge cycle with the temperature difference limited to 1.2 °C. Additionally, the proposed hybrid thermal management strategy was capable of maintaining the required optimal thermal operating conditions without changing the phase of the PCM. Furthermore, it eliminates the requirement of a pump and reservoir since there is no flow of liquid within the battery module. This reduces the energy required for the operation of the thermal management system, thereby increasing the available energy for propulsion. Additionally, the developed strategy also increases the safety of the battery modules as it is capable of maintaining the required thermal environment in high discharge rates up to 7 C.

The shape of the slit that injects the jet from the surface of the propeller was optimized through numerical computations. The high-pressure drop on the propeller surface caused by jet injection could be improved by modifying the hydrofoil geometry of the propeller. As the cover length increased and the slit was located at the center of the propeller, the volume of jets leading to the trailing edge increased, and the propulsion performance was improved. As the height of the slit increased, the thrust increased due to the Coanda effect, and the torque decreased because of the thrust of the jet. The jet injection pattern differed according to the area of the slit and tunnel, which caused a difference in the propeller performance. The jet pattern changed according to the area of the slit and tunnel, leading to a change in propeller performance. It was effective in improving the efficiency by injecting from as wide an area as possible, and the efficiency was improved by approximately 2 % considering the pump efficiency through optimization of the slit shape.

In general, the resistance of a real ship is estimated using an extrapolation method after doing experimental tests or numerical simulations with a model scale ship. Since the only Froude similarity is applied in the model test and simulation, the flow characteristics between the model and real ships could be different due to the inconsistency of Reynolds number. However, in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the Froude and Reynolds numbers can be satisfied simultaneously because a fluid with virtual properties can be applied. This study investigated the effect of turbulence models and scales for a flat plate. And then the hydrodynamic feasibility of using a virtual fluid was investigated through numerical analysis. The resistance performance and flow structure of the ship were analysed by applying the virtual fluid, and they were confirmed how well these values and flow characteristics simulate the full-scale with a real fluid. This study shows that the results of a full-scale can be obtained at model scale by applying a virtual fluid instead of full-scale numerical simulations that require more computational resources.

Efforts to improve the hydrodynamic performance of high-speed ships have been underway for a long time. There are different approaches, one of which is to take advantage of an interceptor. Conventionally, the interceptor blades are mounted vertically on the ship's bottom transom, oriented at a zero-degree angle of attack (AoA). This study comprehensively explores high-speed ships' hulls with and without interceptor configurations, encompassing both negative and positive AoA of the interceptor, conducted through experimental and numerical methods using a fully captive model. The interceptors are strategically positioned and configured. Each configuration was examined under varying AoA settings, with uniform interceptor depths and systematic trim angle adjustments. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach simulates the local flow dynamics around the hull, thoroughly analyzing resistance, pressure distribution, lift force, wave profile, and trim moment. The results indicate that interceptor placement near the keel with AoA adjustments significantly reduces hydrodynamic resistance, while AoA changes have limited impact in other positions. Lift force analysis shows interceptors improve lift compared to the bare hull, but this improvement is not linear across positions. Furthermore, it is observed that adjustments in AoA influence lift, with a negative AoA generally being considered favorable. In summary, carefully considering placement, AoA, and height-to-length ratio is necessary to maximize interceptor advantages.

Early fire detection is essential for preventing catastrophic events, and fire detectors play a critical role in ensuring fire safety. Among the various types of fire detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors are widely used because of their ability to detect smoke at an early stage. The present study investigates the effects of changes in flow directions and inlet size on the smoke detection ability of a photoelectric smoke detector by conducting computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results indicated that when the flow direction changes, the components in the optical chamber may hinder the smoke inflow and increase the detector activation time. Moreover, the smoke inlet size was found to affect the carbon monoxide concentration inside the chamber. The velocity magnitude distributions confirmed the correlation between the smoke velocity in the labyrinth structures entering the optical chamber and the detection ability of the smoke detector. These findings suggested that when optimizing the performance of a smoke detector, flow direction, inlet size, and amount of smoke introduced into the optical chamber should be considered. The current study suggested the modified design of the smoke detector to have superior detection ability in both directions compared to the base case in terms of activation time.

Traditional villages contain human beings adapting to the natural environment and spontaneously forming a living environment in the process of their evolution. However, with the frequent occurrence of harsh weather in recent years, the livability of traditional villages is also facing challenges. In order to improve the climatic adaptability of traditional villages, scholars have proposed many methods, but there is a lack of research on the spatial microclimate adaptation of traditional villages based on the perspective of spatial accessibility. This paper selects typical traditional villages in the Taihu Lake Basin, analyzes spatial accessibility and CFD numerical simulation comfort by spatial syntax from the two levels of village and iconic nodes, and discusses the correlation between spatial accessibility and climate comfort. Also, the study concludes the following: (1) The overall integration degree of Mingyuewan Village is not high, and the overall accessibility is poor. (2) The correlation between wind environment and spatial accessibility is weak. The thermal environment is associated with spatial accessibility. Comfort is strongly correlated with the degree of spatial accessibility. This paper proposes to consider the lake surface to dominate the seasonal wind, reserve windward outlets, and add green plants and shade facilities in green public open spaces. Abstract The performance of stilling basins including a negative step was analyzed addressing its effect on the energy dissipation efficiency, dimensions and structural properties of the hydraulic jump, streambed pressures and pressure fluctuations. Six different cases were simulated, considering two possible relative heights for the step and three possible Froude numbers. The results show that the step yields to lower subcritical depths, allowing smaller basin dimensions. Nevertheless, it tends to slightly increase the roller length of the jump. Concerning the relative energy dissipation, results confirm the improvement derived from the step presence. The internal flow occurring in the jump was also analyzed, and more specifically the subzones generated upstream and downstream the impingement point. The results prove the contribution of the negative step in the stabilization of hydraulic jumps in the stilling basin. In particular, a general decrease of the streambed pressure is observed. In addition, pressure fluctuations are significantly reduced due to the negative step size influence on the hydraulic jump. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to simulate stilling basin flows and to adequately characterize the hydraulic jump performance was confirmed.
