Obesity is a growing epidemic that threatens to deplete healthcare resources by increasing the prevalence of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. The prevalence of general and central obesity among the rural Black population in Limpopo Province is high; however, few studies have evaluated the association between obesity and its comorbidities among the rural Black population, and, hence, this study aims to determine the relationship between obesity and associated comorbidities. This study was cross-sectional and retrospective in design, using secondary data from the Africa Wits-INDEPTH Partnership for Genomic (AWI-Gen) research phase 1 study. A sample size of 791 participants was collected conveniently. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27 (SPSS). A chi-square, unpaired Student’s t-test, bivariate and partial correlation, and multivariate regression analysis were used for analysis. General obesity correlated positively and significantly with LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and hypertension, while central obesity correlated positively and significantly with diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and TC/HDL-C ratio. In the present study, obese participants were more likely to be hypertensive, and have an increased LDL-C/HDL-C ratio. Centrally obese participants were more likely to be diabetic, hypertensive, have dyslipidaemia, and exhibit reduced kidney function.

BackgroundWorldwide, it is estimated that 38 million people are HIV-positive and that over 36 million people have died from the virus. In South Africa, the prevalence of HIV was reported to be 20.6% with Limpopo Province having 17% HIV. Given the high rate of new HIV infection in Limpopo, there is therefore a need to assess factors promoting risky sexual behavior among people living with HIV in order to help design and develop behavioral interventions aimed at reducing risky behaviors among people living with HIV.MethodsThis was a quantitative cross-sectional prospective study, conducted in Mankweng Hospital. The study consisted of 116 participants of which 40 were males and 76 were females aged 18 years and above. The participants were selected using purposive sampling. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27. A comparison of proportions was performed using Chi-Square. The association between risky sexual practice and sociodemographic factors was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression.ResultsThe proportion of risky sexual practices in the total population was 48.3%. Participants who were married, those aged 35–44, and those with tertiary qualifications were more likely to engage in risky sexual practices. Multivariate logistic regression showed widowed participants were less likely to practice risky sexual practices.ConclusionThe present study reported a high prevalence of risky sexual practices of 48.3%. Risky sexual behavior was determined by age, marital status, and level of education. The proportion of married participants was higher in risky sexual behavior. Based on the findings of the present study, it is recommended that targeted interventions and educational programs should be implemented to reduce risky sexual behavior among married individuals, individuals aged 35–44, and individuals with tertiary qualifications.

BackgroundCentral obesity is a leading risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases, in which body fat accumulates to a particular extent, and may negatively impact on health. The prevalence of abdominal obesity has increased over the last 10 years and currently surpasses that of overall obesity. There is a scarcity of data on the determinants of central obesity, especially among populations residing in rural Africa. The aim of the present study was thus to determine sociodemographic and lifestyle factors that are associated with central obesity.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional, retrospective study. The present study used secondary data from the AWI-Gen phase 1 study. The study comprised 791 participants, of which 242 were men and 549 were women aged 40 years and above. The participants were selected by convenient sampling. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 27. A comparison of proportions was performed using the chi-square test, while a comparison of means was performed using an unpaired Student t-test. Abstract Background Language plays a critical role in health communication, particularly in the management and understanding of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among elderly populations. This study aimed to explore the language barriers that affect elderly participants’ comprehension of NCDs, focusing on how these barriers impact their understanding of disease causes, symptoms, treatment, and self-management. The study also investigated how linguistic differences between healthcare workers and patients influence the effectiveness of health interventions in a rural South African context. Methods This qualitative phenomenological study was conducted with elderly participants aged 60 years and above, all of whom have chronic diseases. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted using an interview guide during the AWI-Gen 2 research feedback sessions in the Ga-Dikgale area. Data analysis was performed using QSR NVivo 10 to identify key themes. Results Five major themes emerged regarding participants’ understanding of NCDs and the perceived language barriers. These include Limited Knowledge and Awareness of NCDs, Misconceptions about NCDs, Mixed perceptions regarding NCD causes and treatment, Discrepancies in healthcare workers’ communication, and the Importance of interpreters in facilitating NCD-related communication. Conclusion The study revealed significant misconceptions about diabetes and hypertension, as well as traditional practices like bloodletting, which were perceived to relieve hypertension symptoms. It also identified critical communication barriers, including limited time for health practitioners to explain diagnoses and treatments. The findings emphasize the need for interpreters and culturally sensitive communication strategies to improve health literacy and care. Collaborative efforts between traditional and western health practitioners are recommended to address these issues and enhance community health interventions.
