Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Abstract In sepsis, limited food intake and increased energy expenditure induce a starvation response, which is compromised by a quick decline in the expression of hepatic PPARα, a transcription factor essential in intracellular catabolism of free fatty acids. The mechanism upstream of this PPARα downregulation is unknown. We found that sepsis causes a progressive hepatic loss-of-function of HNF4α, which has a strong impact on the expression of several important nuclear receptors, including PPARα. HNF4α depletion in hepatocytes dramatically increases sepsis lethality, steatosis, and organ damage and prevents an adequate response to IL6, which is critical for liver regeneration and survival. An HNF4α agonist protects against sepsis at all levels, irrespectively of bacterial loads, suggesting HNF4α is crucial in tolerance to sepsis. In conclusion, hepatic HNF4α activity is decreased during sepsis, causing PPARα downregulation, metabolic problems, and a disturbed IL6-mediated acute phase response. The findings provide new insights and therapeutic options in sepsis.

Abstract Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest for the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system in critically ill patients. Emerging data suggest that this vital homeostatic system, which plays a crucial role in maintaining systemic and renal hemodynamics during stressful conditions, is altered in septic shock, ultimately leading to impaired angiotensin II—angiotensin II type 1 receptor signaling. Indeed, available evidence from both experimental models and human studies indicates that alterations in the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system during septic shock can occur at three distinct levels: 1. Impaired generation of angiotensin II, possibly attributable to defects in angiotensin-converting enzyme activity; 2. Enhanced degradation of angiotensin II by peptidases; and/or 3. Unavailability of angiotensin II type 1 receptor due to internalization or reduced synthesis. These alterations can occur either independently or in combination, ultimately leading to an uncoupling between the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system input and downstream angiotensin II type 1 receptor signaling. It remains unclear whether exogenous angiotensin II infusion can adequately address all these mechanisms, and additional interventions may be required. These observations open a new avenue of research and offer the potential for novel therapeutic strategies to improve patient prognosis. In the near future, a deeper understanding of renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system alterations in septic shock should help to decipher patients’ phenotypes and to implement targeted interventions.

Abstract Background Dipeptidyl peptidase 3 (DPP3) is a ubiquitous cytosolic enzyme released into the bloodstream after tissue injury, that can degrade angiotensin II. High concentrations of circulating DPP3 (cDPP3) have been associated with worse outcomes during sepsis. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Procizumab (PCZ), a monoclonal antibody that neutralizes cDPP3, in an experimental model of septic shock. Methods In this randomized, open-label, controlled study, 16 anesthetized and mechanically ventilated pigs with peritonitis were randomized to receive PCZ or standard treatment when the mean arterial pressure (MAP) dropped below 50 mmHg. Resuscitation with fluids, antimicrobial therapy, peritoneal lavage, and norepinephrine was initiated one hour later to maintain MAP between 65–75 mmHg for 12 h. Hemodynamic variables, tissue oxygenation indices, and measures of organ failure and myocardial injury were collected. Organ blood flow was assessed using isotopic assessment (99mtechnetium albumin). cDPP3 activity, equilibrium analysis of the renin–angiotensin system and circulating catecholamines were measured. Tissue mRNA expression of interleukin-6 and downregulation of adrenergic and angiotensin receptors were assessed on vascular and myocardial samples. Results PCZ-treated animals had reduced cDPP3 levels and required less norepinephrine and fluid than septic control animals for similar organ perfusion and regional blood flow. PCZ-treated animals had less myocardial injury, and higher PaO2/FiO2 ratios. PCZ was associated with lower circulating catecholamine levels; higher circulating angiotensin II and higher angiotensin II receptor type 1 myocardial protein expression, and with lower myocardial and radial artery mRNA interleukin-6 expression. Conclusions In an experimental model of septic shock, PCZ administration was associated with reduced fluid and catecholamine requirements, less myocardial injury and cardiovascular inflammation, along with preserved angiotensin II signaling. OBJECTIVES:. To analyze dynamic changes in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) during septic shock, focusing on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity and the balance between angiotensin peptides, using a mass spectrometry method. DESIGN:. Experimental septic shock model induced by peritonitis in swine. SETTING:. Experimental Laboratory, Department of Intensive Care, Erasme Hospital, Université Libre de Bruxelles. SUBJECTS:. Forty time points from eight mechanically ventilated pigs. INTERVENTIONS:. Septic shock was induced using intraperitoneal instillation of autologous feces, followed by standardized fluid resuscitation, norepinephrine infusion, antibiotic administration, and peritoneal lavage. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:. The induction of sepsis resulted in a significant increase in plasma renin activity and levels of angiotensin I and II, with a significant decrease in ACE activity observed from 4 hours post-resuscitation and a notable rise in the angiotensin I/angiotensin II ratio at 12 hours. Additionally, a shift toward the angiotensin-(1–7) axis was observed, evidenced by an increased angiotensin-(1–7)/angiotensin II ratio. CONCLUSIONS:. The study highlighted dynamic shifts in the RAS during septic shock, characterized by reduced circulating ACE activity, elevated angiotensin I/II ratio, and a shift toward the angiotensin-(1–7) axis. These findings suggest an adaptive response within the RAS, potentially offering new insights into sepsis management and therapeutic targets.

Introdução: Pacientes submetidos a transplante de células tronco hematopoiéticas (TCTH) apresentam risco aumentado de infecções devido a defeitos na imunidade humoral e mediada por células. A doença pneumocócica invasiva (DPI), possui uma incidência estimada de 2% a 36% nesses pacientes com tempo médio de ocorrência entre 9 a 15 meses após o TCTH. Uma estratégia essencial para prevenir a DPI após o TCTH é a vacinação. Objetivo: Descrever dados epidemiológicos e clínicos das DPI alem dos sorotipos e perfil de sensibilidade de amostras de S. pneumoniae isolados de pacientes submetidos a TCTH e avaliar a cobertura vacinal antipneumocócica, contra influenza e Covid-19. Método: Estudo observacional do tipo coorte retrospectiva. Foram avaliados todos os receptores de TCTH do Hospital das Clinicas da Universidade de São Paulo entre janeiro de 2020 e julho de 2023. Para avaliação do esquema vacinal foi consultado o Sistema de Informação do Programa Nacional de Vacinação e o Vacivida, ambos de abrangência nacional. Resultados: Um total de 211 pacientes foram submetidos a TCTH no período de 3 anos e meio. A mediana de tempo entre TCTH e início de vacinação com PCV13, PPSV23, COVID-19 e influenza foi de 162, 390,121 e 183 dias, respectivamente. 24,6% da amostra não recebeu nenhuma dose de PCV13, destes, 44% foram a óbito em algum momento com uma mediana de tempo entre TCTH e óbito de 85 dias. Pacientes submetidos a TCTH autólogo foram mais propensos aderir ao esquema de vacinação com 3 doses de PCV13 (RR 1,56; p 0,0004) assim como a receber a PPSV23 (RR 1,51; p 0,0005) e esquema com 3 doses para COVID-19 (RR 2,44; p 0,00004). Escolaridade, ocupação e doença do enxerto versus hospedeiro (GVHD) não tiveram associação estatisticamente significante com a aderência a vacinação. Foram identificados 6 episódios de doença pneumocócica invasiva em 5 pacientes, destes, 2 pacientes foram submetidos TCTH alogênico, ambos apresentaram GVHD. A mediana de tempo entre TCTH e DPI foi de 350 dias. Em 3 episódios, os pacientes já haviam recebido pelo menos 1 dose da PCV13. Todos os isolados foram sensíveis a penicilina com MIC variando de 0,01 a 1,0 mg/L. Resistência a eritromicina, clindamicina e tetraciclina foi encontrada em 66% dos isolados. Conclusão: Nossos resultados mostram uma incidência de DPI similar a literatura, com todos os isolados sensíveis a penicilina. A necessidade de promover melhor adesão aos esquemas propostos de vacinação tanto com a PCV13 como com a PPSV23 são essenciais para proteção contra a doença pneumocócica.

Abstract Generally, species with broad niches also show large range sizes. We investigated the relationship between hydrological niche breadth and geographic range size for Amazonian tree species seeking to understand the role of habitat specialization to Amazonian wetlands and upland forests on the current distribution of tree species. We obtained 571,092 valid occurrence points from GBIF and SpeciesLink to estimate the range size and the niche breadth of 76% of all known Amazonian tree species (5150 tree species). Hydrological niche breadth was measured on different unidimensional axes defined by (1) total annual precipitation; (2) precipitation seasonality; (3) actual evapotranspiration; and (4) water table depth. Geographic range sizes were estimated using alpha‐hull adjustments. General linear models were used to relate niche breadth to range size while contrasting tree species occurring and not occurring in wetlands. The hydrological niche breadth of Amazonian tree species varied mostly along the water table depth axis. The average range size for an Amazonian tree species was 751,000 km2 (median of 154,000 km2 and standard deviation of 1,550,000 km2). Niche breadth–range size relationships for Amazonian tree species were positive for all models, and the explanatory power of the models improved when including whether a species occurred in wetlands or in terrestrial uplands. Wetland species had steeper positive slopes for the niche breadth–range size relationship, and consistently larger range sizes for a given niche breadth. Amazonian tree species varied strongly in hydrological niche breadth and range size, but most species had narrow niche breadths and range sizes. Our results suggest that the South American riverscape may have been acting as a corridor for species dispersal in the Neotropical lowlands.

Abstract Using 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness. Using only location, stratified by forest type, as predictor, our spatial model, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most accurate map of tree diversity in Amazonia to date, explaining approximately 70% of the tree diversity and species-richness. Large soil-forest combinations determine a significant percentage of the variation in tree species-richness and tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian forest-plots. We suggest that the size and fragmentation of these systems drive their large-scale diversity patterns and hence local diversity. A model not using location but cumulative water deficit, tree density, and temperature seasonality explains 47% of the tree species-richness in the terra-firme forest in Amazonia. Over large areas across Amazonia, residuals of this relationship are small and poorly spatially structured, suggesting that much of the residual variation may be local. The Guyana Shield area has consistently negative residuals, showing that this area has lower tree species-richness than expected by our models. We provide extensive plot meta-data, including tree density, tree alpha-diversity and tree species-richness results and gridded maps at 0.1-degree resolution.

Abstract Microgramma vacciniifolia, an epiphyte fern, hosts of two stem galls. One is induced by Tortrimosaica polypodivora (Lepidoptera), which can also induce galls in M. squamulosa and M. mortoniana. The alterations induced by T. polypodivora on M. vacciniifolia stem were compared to non-galled organs to evaluate the anatomical potentials of host ferns in response to a galling Lepidoptera. Histochemical and histometrical comparisons between galled and non-galled stems were performed to assess the processes leading to gall formation. M. vacciinifolia and M. squamulosa galls were anatomically similar, although their sizes differ, reflecting the growth potential of each host species. Simple structural alterations, such as hyperplasia of cortical and pericycle cells, occur during gall formation, while cell hypertrophy, common in more complex galls, was only detected on the pericycle. Meristele size remained unaltered in galls, but the pericycle appeared hyperplasic. The protective scales were broader in galls. A nutritive tissue with lipids, typical to Lepidoptera galls, was observed around the larval chamber, with small cells and meristematic activity. Starch, proteins, and reducing sugars accumulated in nutritive cells are uncommonly found in Lepidoptera galls. Despite simple structural alterations, T. polypodivora induced a gradient of primary metabolites, similar to angiosperm galls.

Abstract Introduction Prognosis after resuscitation from cardiac arrest (CA) remains poor, with high morbidity and mortality as a result of extensive cardiac and brain injury and lack of effective treatments. Hypertonic sodium lactate (HSL) may be beneficial after CA by buffering severe metabolic acidosis, increasing brain perfusion and cardiac performance, reducing cerebral swelling, and serving as an alternative energetic cellular substrate. The aim of this study was to test the effects of HSL infusion on brain and cardiac injury in an experimental model of CA. Methods After a 10-min electrically induced CA followed by 5 min of cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers, adult swine (n = 35) were randomly assigned to receive either balanced crystalloid (controls, n = 11) or HSL infusion started during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR, Intra-arrest, n = 12) or after return of spontaneous circulation (Post-ROSC, n = 11) for the subsequent 12 h. In all animals, extensive multimodal neurological and cardiovascular monitoring was implemented. All animals were treated with targeted temperature management at 34 °C. Results Thirty-four of the 35 (97.1%) animals achieved ROSC; one animal in the Intra-arrest group died before completing the observation period. Arterial pH, lactate and sodium concentrations, and plasma osmolarity were higher in HSL-treated animals than in controls (p 65 mmHg (p = 0.005 for interaction; p = 0.01 for groups). Moreover, plasma troponin I and glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) concentrations were lower in HSL-treated groups at several time-points than in controls. Conclusions In this experimental CA model, HSL infusion was associated with reduced vasopressor requirements and decreased plasma concentrations of measured biomarkers of cardiac and cerebral injury.

Abstract Background Alterations in the renin–angiotensin system have been implicated in the pathophysiology of septic shock. In particular, angiotensin 1–7 (Ang-(1–7)), an anti-inflammatory heptapeptide, has been hypothesized to have beneficial effects. The aim of the present study was to test the effects of Ang-(1–7) infusion on the development and severity of septic shock. Methods This randomized, open-label, controlled study was performed in 14 anesthetized and mechanically ventilated sheep. Immediately after sepsis induction by bacterial peritonitis, animals received either Ang-(1–7) (n = 7) or placebo (n = 7) intravenously. Fluid resuscitation, antimicrobial therapy, and peritoneal lavage were initiated 4 h after sepsis induction. Norepinephrine administration was titrated to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) between 65 and 75 mmHg. Results There were no differences in baseline characteristics between groups. Septic shock was prevented in 6 of the 7 animals in the Ang-(1–7) group at the end of the 24-h period. Fluid balance and MAP were similar in the two groups; however, MAP was achieved with a mean norepinephrine dose of 0.4 μg/kg/min in the Ang-(1–7) group compared to 4.3 μg/kg/min in the control group. Heart rate and cardiac output index were lower in the Ang (1–7) than in the control group, as were plasma interleukin-6 levels, and creatinine levels. Platelet count and PaO2/FiO2 ratio were higher in the Ang-(1–7) group. Mean arterial lactate at the end of the experiment was 1.6 mmol/L in the Ang-(1–7) group compared to 7.4 mmol/L in the control group. Conclusions In this experimental septic shock model, early Ang-(1–7) infusion prevented the development of septic shock, reduced norepinephrine requirements, limited interleukine-6 increase and prevented renal dysfunction.

Abstract In a time of rapid global change, the question of what determines patterns in species abundance distribution remains a priority for understanding the complex dynamics of ecosystems. The constrained maximization of information entropy provides a framework for the understanding of such complex systems dynamics by a quantitative analysis of important constraints via predictions using least biased probability distributions. We apply it to over two thousand hectares of Amazonian tree inventories across seven forest types and thirteen functional traits, representing major global axes of plant strategies. Results show that constraints formed by regional relative abundances of genera explain eight times more of local relative abundances than constraints based on directional selection for specific functional traits, although the latter does show clear signals of environmental dependency. These results provide a quantitative insight by inference from large-scale data using cross-disciplinary methods, furthering our understanding of ecological dynamics.

Abstract Background Angiotensin II is one of the vasopressors available for use in septic shock. However, its effects on the septic myocardium remain unclear. The aim of the study was to compare the effects of angiotensin II and norepinephrine on cardiac function and myocardial oxygen consumption, inflammation and injury in experimental septic shock. Methods This randomized, open-label, controlled study was performed in 20 anesthetized and mechanically ventilated pigs. Septic shock was induced by fecal peritonitis in 16 animals, and four pigs served as shams. Resuscitation with fluids, antimicrobial therapy and abdominal drainage was initiated one hour after the onset of septic shock. Septic pigs were randomly allocated to receive one of the two drugs to maintain mean arterial pressure between 65 and 75 mmHg for 8 h. Results There were no differences in MAP, cardiac output, heart rate, fluid balance or tissue perfusion indices in the two treatment groups but myocardial oxygen consumption was greater in the norepinephrine-treated animals. Myocardial mRNA expression of interleukin-6, interleukin-6 receptor, interleukin-1 alpha, and interleukin-1 beta was higher in the norepinephrine than in the angiotensin II group. Conclusions In septic shock, angiotensin II administration is associated with a similar level of cardiovascular resuscitation and less myocardial oxygen consumption, and inflammation compared to norepinephrine.

Abstract Background Anoxic brain injuries represent the main determinant of poor outcome after cardiac arrest (CA). Large animal models have been described to investigate new treatments during CA and post‐resuscitation phase, but a detailed model that includes extensive neuromonitoring is lacking. Method Before an electrically‐induced 10‐minute CA and resuscitation, 46 adult pigs underwent neurosurgery for placement of a multifunctional probe (intracranial pressure or ICP, tissue oxygen tension or PbtO2 and cerebral temperature) and a bolt‐based technique for the placement and securing of a regional blood flow probe and two sEEG electrodes; two modified cerebral microdialysis (CMD) probes were also inserted in the frontal lobes and accidental misplacement was prevented using a perforated head support. Result 42 animals underwent the CA procedure and 41 achieved the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). In 4 cases (8.6%) an adverse event took place during preparation, but only in two cases (4.3%) this was related to the neurosurgery. In 6 animals (13.3%) the minor complications that occurred resolved after probe repositioning. Conclusion Herein we provide a detailed comprehensive neuromonitoring approach in a large animal model of CA that might help future research.

Abstract Background Prone positioning (PP) reduces mortality of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The potential benefit of prone positioning maneuvers during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the use of prone positioning during extracorporeal support and ICU mortality in a pooled population of patients from previous European cohort studies. Methods We performed a pooled individual patient data analysis of European cohort studies which compared patients treated with prone positioning during ECMO (Prone group) to “conventional” ECMO management (Supine group) in patients with severe ARDS. Results 889 patients from five studies were included. Unadjusted ICU mortality was 52.8% in the Supine Group and 40.8% in the Prone group. At a Cox multiple regression analysis PP during ECMO was not significantly associated with a reduction of ICU mortality (HR 0.67 95% CI: 0.42–1.06). Propensity score matching identified 227 patients in each group. ICU mortality of the matched samples was 48.0% and 39.6% for patients in the Supine and Prone group, respectively (p = 0.072). Conclusions In a large population of ARDS patients receiving venovenous extracorporeal support, the use of prone positioning during ECMO was not significantly associated with reduced ICU mortality. The impact of this procedure will have to be definitively assessed by prospective randomized controlled trials.

A direita americana, que encontrara nos anos 1960 e 1970 pontos de convergência entre suas diferentes correntes, passa a se fragmentar com o fortalecimento dos neoconservadores nos anos 1980. O artigo procura analisar como esse processo, que se ensaiava antes do fim da Guerra Fria, foi acelerado pela resposta de George W. Bush aos ataques terroristas e permitiu que forças políticas como o populismo se deslocassem das margens para o centro do debate político.

We reported the hymenopteran fauna (except Formicidae) in a floodable area in the South Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The study was conducted in a riparian forest of the Miranda river, located in the Passo do Lontra region, Corumbá. The collection occurred in the dry season of August 2016 using different capture methods. A total of 137 individuals distributed in 18 families, 43 genera, and 64 morphospecies (10 nominal) were collected. The families with the greatest richness were Diapriidae and Ichneumonidae with 11 morphospecies each (17% of the total), followed by Platygastridae and Braconidae with 10 and nine, respectively. Two species were newly recorded for Brazil: Gryonoides pulchellus Dodd, 1920 (Platygastridae) and Losada penai Fritz, 1873 (Crabronidae), plus 22 new records for Mato Grosso do Sul. This study increases about 5.2% of the wasp fauna recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as for the Pantanal.

During recent years, gasification technology has gained a high potential and attractiveness to convert biomass and other solid wastes into a valuable syngas for energy production or synthesis of new biofuels. The implementation of real gasification facilities implies a good insight of all expenses that are involved, namely investments required in equipment during the project and construction phases (capital expenditures, CapEx) and costs linked to the operation of the plant, or periodic maintenance interventions (operational expenditures, OpEx) or costs related to operations required for an efficient and sustainable performance of a gasification plant (e.g., feedstock pre-treatment and management of by-products). Knowledge of these economic parameters and their corresponding trends over time may help decision-makers to make adequate choices regarding the eligible technologies and to perform comparisons with other conventional scenarios. The present work aims to provide an overview on CapEx associated with gasification technologies devoted to convert biomass or solid waste sources, with a view of reducing the carbon footprint during energy generation or production of new energy carriers. In addition, an analysis of technology cost trends over time using regression methods is also presented, as well as an evaluation of specific capital investments according to the amount of output products generated for different gasification facilities. The novelty of this work is focused on an analysis of CapEx of existing gasification technologies to obtain distinct products (energy and fuels), and to determine mathematical correlations relating technology costs with time and product output. For these purposes, a survey of data and categorization of gasification plants based on the final products was made, and mathematical regression methods were used to obtain the correlations, with a statistical analysis (coefficient of determination) for validation. Specific investments on liquid biofuel production plants exhibited the highest decreasing trend over time, while electricity production became the least attractive solution. Linear correlations of specific investment versus time fitted better for electricity production plants (R2 = 0.67), while those relating the product output were better for liquid biofuel plants through exponential regressions (R2 = 0.65).

Background: Steroid-refractory acute graft-vs.-host disease (SR-aGVHD) is a complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with a dismal prognosis and for which there is no consensus-based second-line therapy. Ruxolitinib is not easily accessible in many countries. A possible therapy is the administration of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Methods: In this retrospective study, 52 patients with severe SR-aGVHD were treated with MSCs from umbilical cord (UC-MSCs) in nine institutions. Results: The median (range) age was 12.5 (0.3–65) years and the mean ± SD dose (×106/kg) was 4.73 ± 1.3 per infusion (median of four infusions). Overall (OR) and complete response (CR) rates on day 28 were 63.5% and 36.6%, respectively. Children (n = 35) had better OR (71.5% vs. 47.1%, p = 0.12), CR (48.6% vs. 11.8%, p = 0.03), overall survival (p = 0.0006), and relapse-free survival (p = 0.0014) than adults (n = 17). Acute adverse events (all of them mild or moderate) were detected in 32.7% of patients, with no significant difference in children and adult groups (p = 1.0). Conclusions: UC-MSCs are a feasible alternative therapy for SR-aGVHD, especially in children. The safety profile is favorable.

Abstract Aims There is no quality of life tool specifically developed for patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) to assess how this chronic condition and its treatment affect patients. The Toronto Aortic Stenosis Quality of Life Questionnaire (TASQ) has been developed to overcome this gap. Demonstramos como Vilém Flusser constrói em Bodenlos uma autobiografia filosófica uma estrutura narrativa que definimos como metalinguagem filosófica porque reflete o próprio conteúdo de sua obra que quebra com a linearidade cronológica do tempo historicista.

Abstract Background Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is impaired in patients with stable angina but patients often present with other forms of chest pain. The aim of this study was to compare the pre-diagnostic HRQoL in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) according to angina type, gender, and presence of obstructive CAD. Methods From the pilot study for the European DISCHARGE trial, we analysed data from 24 sites including 1263 patients (45.9% women, 61.1 ± 11.3 years) who were clinically referred for invasive coronary angiography (ICA; 617 patients) or coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA; 646 patients). Prior to the procedures, patients completed HRQoL questionnaires: the Short Form (SF)-12v2, the EuroQoL (EQ-5D-3 L) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Results Fifty-five percent of ICA and 35% of CTA patients had typical angina, 23 and 33% had atypical angina, 18 and 28% had non-anginal chest discomfort and 5 and 5% had other chest discomfort, respectively. Despite decades of research, sepsis remains one of the most urgent unmet medical needs. Mechanistic investigations into sepsis have mainly focused on targeting inflammatory pathways; however, recent data indicate that sepsis should also be seen as a metabolic disease. Targeting metabolic dysregulations that take place in sepsis might uncover novel therapeutic opportunities. The role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARɑ) in liver dysfunction during sepsis has recently been described, and restoring PPARɑ signaling has proven to be successful in mouse polymicrobial sepsis. To confirm that such therapy might be translated to septic patients, we analyzed metabolic perturbations in the liver of a porcine fecal peritonitis model. Resuscitation with fluids, vasopressor, antimicrobial therapy and abdominal lavage were applied to the pigs in order to mimic human clinical care. By using RNA-seq, we detected downregulated PPARɑ signaling in the livers of septic pigs and that reduced PPARɑ levels correlated well with disease severity. As PPARɑ regulates the expression of many genes involved in fatty acid oxidation, the reduced expression of these target genes, concomitant with increased free fatty acids in plasma and ectopic lipid deposition in the liver, was observed. The results obtained with pigs are in agreement with earlier observations seen in mice and support the potential of targeting defective PPARɑ signaling in clinical research.

Triclosan (TCS) is a phenolic compound with broad-spectrum antimicrobial action that has been incorporated into a variety of personal care products and other industry segments such as toys, textiles, and plastics. Due to its widespread use, TCS and its derivatives have been detected in several environmental compartments, with potential bioaccumulation and persistence. Indeed, some studies have demonstrated that TCS may act as a potential endocrine disruptor for the reproductive system. In the current study, we are reporting on the results obtained for male rats after a two-generation reproduction toxicity study conducted with TCS. Female and male Wistar rats were treated daily by gavage with TCS at doses of 0.8, 2.4, and 8.0 mg/kg/day or corn oil (control group) over 10 weeks (F0) and over 14 weeks (F1) before mating and then throughout mating, until weaning F2 generations, respectively. TCS exposure decreased sperm viability and motility of F1 rats at the dose of 2.4 mg/kg. The effects of TCS on sperm quality may be related to the exposure window, which includes the programming of reproductive cells that occurs during fetal/neonatal development.

The water-and-waste sector has shown a marked interest in innovative management practices for dewatered sludge. The need to manage increased sludge volumes at rising disposal costs, coupled with the recognition of the potential for on-site energy production, have been the key drivers for this recent appeal. With the current political view supporting the development of a renewable-gas industry in Portugal, renewable gases are considered an attractive solution for dewatered-sludge valorization. Moreover, investment in renewable-gas supply chains would help the industry to mature to a level at which the technology and market are rapidly established. Recognizing this interest, dewatered-sludge gasification was selected as a possible valorization pathway, with the potential for hydrogen and bio-SNG production, as well as decentralized heat and power. This document identifies the market opportunities for the establishment of sewage-sludge gasification in Portugal. The analysis starts with a brief overview of the Portuguese water-and-waste sector, and a description of the current status of the renewable-gas markets. Finally, the dewatered-sludge amounts are quantified, and the potential for energy and renewable-gas production is estimated to support the interest in wastewater management in advanced processes, and to pave the way for future feasibility studies.

Background There is a paucity of outcome data on patients who are morbidly obese (MO) undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement. We aimed to determine their periprocedural and midterm outcomes and investigate the impact of obesity phenotype. Methods and Results Consecutive patients who are MO (body mass index, ≥40 kg/m2, or ≥35 kg/m2 with obesity‐related comorbidities; n=910) with severe aortic stenosis who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement in 18 tertiary hospitals were compared with a nonobese cohort (body mass index, 18.5–29.9 kg/m2, n=2264). Propensity‐score matching resulted in 770 pairs. Pre–transcatheter aortic valve replacement computed tomography scans were centrally analyzed to assess adipose tissue distribution; epicardial, abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat. Major vascular complications were more common (6.6% versus 4.3%; P=0.043) and device success was less frequent (84.4% versus 88.1%; P=0.038) in the MO group. Freedom from all‐cause and cardiovascular mortality were similar at 2 years (79.4 versus 80.6%, P=0.731; and 88.7 versus 87.4%, P=0.699; MO and nonobese, respectively). Multivariable analysis identified baseline glomerular filtration rate and nontransfemoral access as independent predictors of 2‐year mortality in the MO group. An adverse MO phenotype with an abdominal visceral adipose tissue:subcutaneous adipose tissue ratio ≥1 (VAT:SAT) was associated with increased 2‐year all‐cause (hazard ratio [HR], 3.06; 95% CI, 1.20–7.77; P=0.019) and cardiovascular (hazard ratio, 4.11; 95% CI, 1.06–15.90; P=0.041) mortality, and readmissions (HR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.07–3.07; P=0.027). After multivariable analysis, a (VAT:SAT) ratio ≥1 remained a strong predictor of 2‐year mortality (hazard ratio, 2.78; P=0.035). Conclusions Transcatheter aortic valve replacement in patients who are MO has similar short‐ and midterm outcomes to nonobese patients, despite higher major vascular complications and lower device success. An abdominal VAT:SAT ratio ≥1 identifies an obesity phenotype at higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes.

Biochar produced during the thermochemical decomposition of biomass is an environmentally friendly replacement for different carbon materials and can be used for carbon sequestration to mitigate climate change. In this paper, current biochar production processes and top market applications are reviewed, as well as emerging biochar uses gaining momentum in the market. Various application fields of biochar, including agricultural applications (e.g., soil conditioning), adsorption (for soil and water pollutants), carbon sequestration, catalysis, or incorporation into composites or construction materials, are also presented and discussed. According to this literature overview, slow pyrolysis is the preferred process for biochar production, whereas agricultural applications (for soil conditioning and fertilization) are the most studied and market-ready solutions for biochar use. The Alentejo region (Portugal) shows tremendous potential to be a major player in the developing biochar market considering feedstock availability and large areas for biochar agricultural application. Biochar’s production potential and possible benefits were also estimated for this Portuguese region, proving that agricultural application can effectively lead to many environmental, economic, and social gains.

O artigo examina o fenômeno da midiatização com foco nos processos de circulação de sentidos. Em meio à profusão imagética da sociedade midiatizada, investiga-se a disputa pela construção da imagem do Exército Brasileiro durante a operação de pacificação do Complexo da Maré, ocorrida entre 2014 e 2015. Como referencial teórico, defende-se uma compreensão do fenômeno da midiatização baseada na abordagem mais recente de Verón (2014), que encaminha às noções de circulação a partir de Braga (2012) e Fausto Neto (2010) e de dispositivo midiático a partir de Ferreira (2013). Quanto aos aspectos metodológicos, parte-se do esquema prógono de Verón para análise da midiatização (1997) para a constituição de dois eixos de análise, organizados em três coleções de imagens referentes a acontecimentos da operação. Tensionadas quanto a aspectos sócio-semio-técnicos, as coleções revelam categorias de imagens produzidas sobre o Exército, posteriormente sistematizadas em diagramas inferenciais. Conclui-se que, na circulação midiática atual, cada vez mais heterogênea e transversal, além da disputa intermidiática que atravessa a construção da imagem do Exército na Maré, configura-se também uma coprodução da imagem institucional, potencializada pela processualidade simbólica que, paradoxalmente, fortalece determinadas imagens em detrimento de outras.

AIM:To translate and adapt cross-culturally the De Morton Mobility Index from English to Brazilian Portuguese. Furthermore, to test the content validity, reliability, construct validity, interpretability and responsiveness for older hospitalized patients. METHODS:After we carried out the translation and the cross-cultural adaptation of the De Morton Mobility Index and its administration instructions according to international guidelines, the content validity of De Morton Mobility Index was tested by experienced physiotherapists. In the sequence, the reliability, construct validity, interpretability and responsiveness were tested in a test-retest design with 93 older patients hospitalized in ward for clinical reasons. The reliability was tested by Cronbach's alpha coefficient (internal consistency), standard error measurement (agreement), and interclass correlation coefficients (intra and inter-examiner reliability). The construct validity was tested by Pearson's correlation between the De Morton Mobility Index score and the number of steps. Interpretability was analyzed by determining the minimum detectable change and the floor and ceiling effects (frequency of maximum and minimum scoring). Responsiveness was analyzed by effect size. RESULTS:The Brazilian version of the De Morton Mobility Index was made and adapted. The internal consistency (α = 0.89), reliability intra-(ICC = 0.94) and inter-examiners (ICC = 0.82), agreement were all adequate. BackgroundThe objective of this study was to assess regional and ethnic differences in an unselected patient population treated with polymer-free sirolimus-eluting stents (PF-SES) in Asia and Europe.MethodsTwo all-comers observational studies based on the same protocol (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifiers: NCT02629575 and NCT02905214) were combined for data analysis to assure sufficient statistical power. The primary endpoint was the accumulated target lesion revascularization (TLR) rate at 9-12 months.ResultsOf the total population of 7243 patients, 44.0% (3186) were recruited in the Mediterranean region and 32.0% (2317) in central Europe. The most prominent Asian region was South Korea (17.6%, 1274) followed by Malaysia (5.7%, 413). Major cardiovascular risk factors varied significantly across regions. The overall rates for accumulated TLR and MACE were low with 2.2% (140/6374) and 4.4% (279/6374), respectively. In ACS patients, there were no differences in terms of MACE, TLR, MI and accumulated mortality between the investigated regions. Moreover, dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) regimens were substantially longer in Asian countries even in patients with stable coronary artery disease as compared to those in Europe.ConclusionsPF-SES angioplasty is associated with low clinical event rates in all regions. Further reductions in clinical event rates seem to be associated with longer DAPT regimens.

O artigo apresenta a experiência do Programa de Extensão Análise Crítica de Produtos Midiáticos desenvolvido em escolas públicas da cidade de Porto Alegre (RS) pelo Grupo de Pesquisa em Comunicação Organizacional, Cultura e Relações de Poder (GCCOP) da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), cujo objetivo é debater com jovens do ensino médio a mídia e seus produtos a partir da análise crítica dos modos de produção e de veiculação desses conteúdos. Partindo teoricamente dos conceitos de midiatização e de letramento midiático, o artigo analisa o impacto do programa para a formação de jovens cidadãos, bem como reflete sobre o papel da universidade no desenvolvimento de ações de extensão que permitam ampliar o alcance das pesquisas e das práticas acadêmicas no campo da Comunicação junto à sociedade.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the extended cold storage of raw milk on the kinetics of fermentation on yogurt production, as well as on the product’s microbiological and physicochemical properties during shelf life. Three treatments were evaluated: yogurts made with raw milk stored for 4, 72, and 168 hours. Kinetics of fermentation was assessed through the lactic acid production rate, growth rate of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and time to reach pH 5.0 and 4.5. The physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of raw milk and yogurts were also analyzed during cold storage at 4°C. The microbial quality of raw milk was affected by the storage time of 168 hours, with a decreasing tendency in the mesophiles:psychrotrophs ratio. Extended storage of raw milk beyond 72 hours negatively affects yogurt production, despite the low initial bacterial count, decreasing lactic acid production, S. thermophilus growth rate, pH, and protein content. Therefore, to optimize fermentation and yogurt shelf life, the maximum storage time for raw milk at 4oC should not exceed 72 hours.

No contexto de uma disputa intermidiática pela produção da imagem do Exército Brasileiro durante sua atuação no Complexo da Maré (RJ), em junho de 2015, o artigo procura uma aproximação com o fenômeno da midiatização focada na incidência de seus processos na circulação de imagens. Examina-se de que maneira circulou a imagem institucional no final da operação, a partir de dois eixos de análise: a heterogeneidade e a transversalidade das relações intermidiáticas.

A melissopalinologia foi utilizada para determinar a origem botânica do mel, importante para sua rastreabilidade. Quarenta amostras de mel dos municípios de Santa Helena (20) e Terra Roxa (20), região oeste do Paraná, foram analisadas de acordo com os tipos de pólen e comparações com os catálogos de pólen e literatura especializada. Em relação à qualidade analítica, foram identificados 300 grãos de pólen por amostra. Nas amostras de Santa Helena, foram encontrados 71 tipos de pólen de 24 famílias, classificados como mel monofloral de Hovenia dulcis (8) e o restante como multifloral (12). Nas amostras da Terra Roxa, 64 tipos de pólen pertencentes a 29 famílias foram classificadas como Glycine max L. Merrill (7), Mimosa scabrella Benth (2),Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth (1), Mimosa verrucosa Benth (1), Mikania sp. (1) e Senecio sp. (1) e como multifloral (7). Os dois locais têm um alto índice de similaridade, no entanto, a predominância de alguns tipos de pólen indica a especificidade botânica da localidade. Para Santa Helena, maior significância foi observada para o pólen de H. dulcis , Eucalyptus sp. , Parapiptadenia rigida , e leucena ; em Terra Roxa, os tipos de pólen G. max , M. scabrella e Eucalyptussp. teve mais incidentes. Apesar do índice de similaridade, os indicadores mostram diferenças entre as áreas produtoras. As amostras de mel de Santa Helena apresentaram maior diversidade de pólen em relação às amostras de Terra Roxa, refletindo a cobertura vegetativa predominante de matas ciliares e culturas agrícolas, respectivamente, em cada município.

Mesmo diante do violento processo de desterritorialização vivido pelas inúmeras comunidades africanas no contexto da dominação colonial europeia, práticas e saberes ancestrais foram ressignificados e reelaborados de forma a impregnar o tecido social das culturas negras das Américas. Nesta perspectiva, este artigo insere-se em um conjunto de reflexões que visam exaltar a importância da preservação de memórias afrodiaspóricas no Brasil. Para tanto, particulariza-se um território negro no município de São Paulo, o bairro da Casa Verde na zona norte da cidade. Com base na História oral e na pesquisa de campo, o objetivo central da presente pesquisa é sugerir possíveis traduções acerca da presença e permanência de ancestralidades negro-africanas na urbe paulistana a partir das narrativas compartilhadas e dos trabalhos de memória de Lucinda de Oliveira Marcelino. A colaboradora/narradora é filha de uma das fundadoras da Irmandade de São Benedito da Casa Verde, inaugurada em 1941. O acesso às memórias reconstruídas de Dona Lucinda permitem sinalizar a presença de práticas ancestrais marcadas por cosmovisões herdadas e protagonizadas por mulheres. Tais concepções constroem identidades afirmadas que singularizam as experiências negras na metrópole, expressando valores civilizacionais e extraocidentais comunitários fundamentais à humanidade. Os países latino-americanos são herdeiros de práticas ancestrais que constituem a estrutura sociocultural, a história e a memória de grupos africanos e da afrodiáspora. Nesta perspectiva, o presente artigo insere-se em um conjunto de iniciativas que visam exaltar a importância da preservação de memórias afrodiaspóricas no Brasil, particularizando um território negro paulistano - o Parque Peruche, situado na zona norte do município de São Paulo (SP). São seus objetivos centrais a) participar da produção de memórias e acompanhar narrativas da diversidade de grupos afrodiaspóricos e b) sugerir possíveis traduções acerca da presença e permanência de ancestralidades negro-africanas no território em questão. Com base na História oral e na pesquisa de campo, é possível sinalizar a presença de protagonismos femininos negros que se configuram em práticas ancestrais marcadas por cosmovisões herdadas. Tais concepções constroem identidades afirmadas que particularizam experiências negras na metrópole paulistana.

INTRODUCTION:Mechanisms of maintenance of both atrial fibrillation and structural left ventricular disease are known to include fibrosis. Galectin-3, a biomarker of fibrosis, is elevated both in patients with heart failure and persistent atrial fibrillation. We sought to find whether galectin-3 has a prognostic value in patients with heart failure and a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction undergoing ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation. METHODS:Serum concentrations of galectin-3 were determined in a consecutive series of patients with an ejection fraction ≤40%, addressed for ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation. Responders to ablation were patients in sinus rhythm and with an ejection fraction ≥50% at 6 months. A combined endpoint of heart failure hospitalization, transplantation and/or death was used at 12 months. RESULTS:Seventy-five patients were included (81% male, age 63±10 years, ejection fraction 34±7%, galectin-3 21±12 ng/mL). During follow-up, eight patients were hospitalized for decompensated heart failure, 1 underwent heart transplantation, and 4 died; 50 patients were considered as responders to ablation. After adjustment, galectin-3 level independently predicted both 6-month absence of response to ablation (OR = 0.89 per unit increase, p = 0.002). Patients with galectin-3 levels

We determined the filtered tree species pool of Amazonian wetland forests, based on confirmed occurrence records, to better understand how tree diversity in wetland environments compares to tree diversity in the entire Amazon region. The tree species pool was determined using data from two main sources: 1) a compilation of published tree species lists plus one unpublished list of our own, derived from tree plot inventories and floristic surveys; 2) queries on botanical collections that include Amazonian flora, curated by herbaria and available through the SpeciesLink digital biodiversity database. We applied taxonomic name resolution and determined sample-based species accumulation curves for both datasets, to estimate sampling effort and predict the expected species richness using Chao's analytical estimators. We report a total of 3 615 valid tree species occurring in Amazonian wetland forests. After surveying almost 70 years of research efforts to inventory the diversity of Amazonian wetland trees, we found that 74% these records were registered in published species lists (2 688 tree species). Tree species richness estimates predicted from either single dataset underestimated the total pooled species richness recorded as occurring in Amazonian wetlands, with only 41% of the species shared by both datasets. The filtered tree species pool of Amazonian wetland forests comprises 53% of the 6 727 tree species taxonomically confirmed for the Amazonian tree flora to date. This large proportion is likely to be the result of significant species interchange among forest habitats within the Amazon region, as well as in situ speciation processes due to strong ecological filtering. The provided tree species pool raises the number of tree species previously reported as occurring in Amazonian wetlands by a factor of 3.2.

O presente artigo procura uma aproximação com o fenômeno da midiatização, a partir da incidência de seus processos no contexto das organizações. Examinam-se as afetações das lógicas de transição de uma sociedade dos meios para uma sociedade midiatizada nas rotinas organizacionais. A partir dessa problematização, emerge a necessidade de uma reflexão sobre o que chamamos de imagem institucional, ancorada nos novos tensionamentos acerca do conceito de circulação, que é basilar no entendimento da realidade midiatizada.

Phenotypic characters of honeybees, relevant to beekeepers, can be evaluated by studying correlations between them, and the correlated characteristics can be evaluated in the short term to assist in monitoring of annual genetic progress. This work therefore aims to evaluate the production of honey and propolis, the hygiene and defensive behaviours of two generations of Africanized Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera, Apidae), to estimate the correlations between them and their heritability. We used 30 Langstroth beehives in apiaries in Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná State, Brazil. We used a method of drilling pupae to evaluate hygiene behaviour and the velveteen ball method to test defensive behaviour. We selected ten colonies which had the best honey and propolis production, and which produced F1 queens that were then transferred to beehives at an experimental farm, in order to observe honey and propolis production, hygiene and defence behaviours of their female offspring. The estimated differences for each characteristic between the generations, the correlations between them within each generation and their heritability suggest that selection of colonies based on propolis production was more efficient at maintaining this high production than was selection based on honey production according to the performance of the colonies for this characteristic. The selected behavioural characteristics can be used to enhance performance, but not for improving yield characteristics evaluated.

Programs designed to enhance milk quality have been used to motivate dairy farmers to improve the quality of the raw milk they produce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between a milk quality payment program and four indicative variables of milk quality, by testing bulk tank somatic cell count (SCC), bulk tank total bacterial count (TBC), fat (FAT) and protein (PROT) percentages over three years in four dairy cooperatives in Southern Brazil. We used a multiple regression econometric model estimated from market data of milk delivered by farmers to the cooperatives. Bulk tank milk samples (n = 19,644) were monthly collected. The data set was analyzed for the effects of seasonality, average daily volume of milk, the award/penalty, producer, and cooperatives on SCC, TBC, FAT and PROT. Results suggested an association between the adoption of a payment program based on milk quality and the reduction of SCC and TBC. Nevertheless, the program seems to have not contributed to increase fat and protein milk percentages. This information may help the dairy industry in developing countries to conceive strategies to enhance overall milk quality.

Foi avaliada a qualidade dos frutos de 29 acessos de tomateiro do Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças (BGH-UFV) e de três cultivares comerciais, Santa Clara, Débora Plus e Fanny. As variáveis avaliadas foram: sólidos solúveis (SS), acidez titulável (AT), pH e relação SS/AT. Foi observada, para os acessos, variação significativa das características avaliadas, com exceção do pH. Os acessos BGH700, BGH2000, BGH2008, BGH2013, BGH2014 e BGH2017 destacaram-se no que se refere ao teor de SS, tendo estes sido superiores em 4,2 ºBrix aos dos cultivares comerciais. Com relação à acidez titulável, os acessos BGH2013, BGH2019, BGH2020 e BGH2033 apresentaram os maiores valores, com acidez acima de 0,57%. Os cultivares comerciais foram alocados no grupo de menor acidez, com valores inferiores a 0,46%. Para a relação SS/AT, destacaram-se os acessos BGH700, BGH2000, BGH2008 e o cultivar comercial Débora Plus com valores de 11,1; 11,9; 10,9; e 10,0, respectivamente.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as correlações genotípicas e seus desdobramentos em efeitos diretos e indiretos de componentes de produção primários e secundários sobre a produtividade de frutos em acessos de tomateiro, pela análise de trilha. Foram utilizados dados de 20 características, avaliadas em 132 acessos de tomateiro do grupo Salada, do Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Após o diagnóstico de multicolinearidade, oito características foram descartadas, e a análise de trilha foi realizada com: variável principal (produção total de frutos); variáveis primárias (peso médio e número total de frutos); e variáveis secundárias (frutos não comercializáveis, índice de precocidade, comprimento da folha, espessura do pecíolo principal, comprimento e diâmetro do entrenó, número de lóculos, acidez total e sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos). O comprimento da folha, o índice de precocidade e o diâmetro do entrenó apresentaram maior correlação genotípica com a produção total de frutos (0,69; -0,54 e 0,5, respectivamente). A análise de trilha com um único diagrama causal mostrou igual importância das variáveis primárias na determinação da produção. A análise de trilha com dois diagramas causais mostrou que a seleção simultânea do comprimento da folha e do diâmetro do entrenó pode ser uma boa alternativa para a obtenção de ganhos na produção total de frutos.The objective of this work was to evaluate the genotypic correlations and their development in direct and indirect effects of primary and secondary yield components on the fruit production of tomato accessions of the Salad group using path analysis. Data of 20 characters of 132 tomato accessions of the Salad group from the Germplasm Bank of Universidade Federal de Viçosa were used. After multicollinearity diagnosis, eight characters were discarded, and the path analysis was carried out with: main variable (total fruit yield); primary variables (average fruit weight and total number of fruits); and secondary variables (non-commercial fruits, precocity index, leaf length, thickness of main petiole, stem internode length and diameter, number of locules, total acidity and total soluble solids of the fruits). Leaf length, precocity index and stem internode diameter were the characters with highest genotypic correlation with total fruit yield. The path analysis with only one causal diagram showed equal importance of the primary variables in determining the yield (0.69, -0.54, 0.5, respectively). The path analysis with two causal diagrams showed that the simultaneous selection of leaf length and stem internode diameter can be a good alternative for obtaining gains in the total fruit yield.
