Abstract Novel alumina-based materials enriched with vanadia and lanthana were successfully synthesized via in situ modification using a mechanochemical method, and were applied in ammonia-induced selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (SCR process). The synthesis was optimized in terms of the ball milling time (3 or 5 h), vanadium content (0.5, 1 or 2 wt% in the final product), and lanthanum content (0.5 or 1 wt% in the final product). Vanadium (V) oxide was immobilized on an alumina support to provide catalytic activity, while lanthana was introduced to increase the affinity of nitrogen oxides and create more active adsorption sites. Mechanochemical synthesis successfully produced mesoporous materials with a large specific surface area of 279–337 m2/g and a wide electrokinetic potential range from 60 to (− 40) mV. Catalytic tests showed that the incorporation of vanadia resulted in a very large improvement in catalytic performance compared with pristine alumina, increasing its efficiency from 14 to 63% at 400 °C. The best SCR performance, a 75% nitrogen oxide conversion rate at a temperature of 450 °C, was obtained for alumina enriched with 2 and 0.5 wt% of vanadium and lanthanum, respectively, which may be considered as a promising result.

Two series of MCM-36 zeolites intercalated with various pillars and modified with iron were synthesized, analyzed with respect to their physicochemical properties, and tested as catalysts for the NH3-SCR process. It was found that the characteristic MWW morphology of MCM-36 can be obtained successfully using silica, alumina, and iron oxide as pillars. Additionally, one-pot synthesis of the material with iron resulted in the incorporation of monomeric Fe3+ species into the framework positions. The results of catalytic tests revealed that the one-pot synthesized sample intercalated with silica and alumina was the most efficient catalyst of NO reduction, exhibiting ca. 100% activity at 250 °C. The outstanding performance of the material was attributed to the abundance of Lewis acid sites and the beneficial influence of alumina on the distribution of iron species in the zeolite. In contrast, the active centers originating from the Fe2O3 pillars improved the NO conversion in the high-temperature range. Nevertheless, the aggregated particles of the metal oxide limited the access of the reacting molecules to the inner structure of the catalyst, which affected the overall activity and promoted the formation of N2O above 300 °C.

γ-Alumina with incorporated metal oxide species (including Fe, Cu, Zn, Bi, and Ga) was synthesized by liquid-assisted grinding—mechanochemical synthesis, applying boehmite as the alumina precursor and suitable metal salts. Various contents of metal elements (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, and 20 wt.%) were used to tune the composition of the resulting hybrid materials. The different milling time was tested to find the most suitable procedure that allowed the preparation of porous alumina incorporated with selected metal oxide species. The block copolymer, Pluronic P123, was used as a pore-generating agent. Commercial γ−alumina (SBET = 96 m2·g−1), and the sample fabricated after two hours of initial grinding of boehmite (SBET = 266 m2·g−1), were used as references. Analysis of another sample of γ-alumina prepared within 3 h of one-pot milling revealed a higher surface area (SBET = 320 m2·g−1) that did not increase with a further increase in the milling time. So, three hours of grinding time were set as optimal for this material. The synthesized samples were characterized by low-temperature N2 sorption, TGA/DTG, XRD, TEM, EDX, elemental mapping, and XRF techniques. The higher loading of metal oxide into the alumina structure was confirmed by the higher intensity of the XRF peaks. Samples synthesized with the lowest metal oxide content (5 wt.%) were tested for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 (NH3-SCR). Among all tested samples, besides pristine Al2O3 and alumina incorporated with gallium oxide, the increase in reaction temperature accelerated the NO conversion. The highest NO conversion rate was observed for Fe2O3-incorporated alumina (70%) at 450 °C and CuO-incorporated alumina (71%) at 300 °C. The CO2 capture was also studied for synthesized samples and the sample of alumina with incorporated Bi2O3 (10 wt.%) gave the best result (1.16 mmol·g−1) at 25 °C, while alumina alone could adsorb only 0.85 mmol·g−1 of CO2. Furthermore, the synthesized samples were tested for antimicrobial properties and found to be quite active against Gram-negative bacteria, P. aeruginosa (PA). The measured Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values for the alumina samples with incorporated Fe, Cu, and Bi oxide (10 wt.%) were found to be 4 µg·mL−1, while 8 µg·mL−1 was obtained for pure alumina.

The catalytic performance of Fe-catalysts in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia (NH3-SCR) strongly depends on the nature of iron sites. Therefore, we aimed to prepare and investigate the catalytic potential of Fe-MCM-22 with various Si/Fe molar ratios in NH3-SCR. The samples were prepared by the one-pot synthesis method to provide high dispersion of iron and reduce the number of synthesis steps. We have found that the sample with the lowest concentration of Fe exhibited the highest catalytic activity of ca. 100% at 175 °C, due to the abundance of well-dispersed isolated iron species. The decrease of Si/Fe limited the formation of microporous structure and resulted in partial amorphization, formation of iron oxide clusters, and emission of N2O during the catalytic reaction. However, an optimal concentration of FexOy oligomers contributed to the decomposition of nitrous oxide within 250–400 °C. Moreover, the acidic character of the catalysts was not a key factor determining the high conversion of NO. Additionally, we conducted NH3-SCR catalytic tests over the samples after poisoning with sulfur dioxide (SO2). We observed that SO2 affected the catalytic performance mainly in the low-temperature region, due to the deposition of thermally unstable ammonium sulfates.

In modern dual-pressure nitric acid plants, the tail gas temperature usually exceeds 300 °C. The NH3-SCR catalyst used in this temperature range must be resistant to thermal deactivation, so commercial vanadium-based systems, such as V2O5-WO3 (MoO3)-TiO2, are most commonly used. However, selectivity of this material significantly decreases above 350 °C due to the increase in the rate of side reactions, such as oxidation of ammonia to NO and formation of N2O. Moreover, vanadium compounds are toxic for the environment. Thus, management of the used catalyst is complicated. One of the alternatives to commercial V2O5-TiO2 catalysts are natural zeolites. These materials are abundant in the environment and are thus relatively cheap and easily accessible. Therefore, the aim of the study was to design a novel iron-modified zeolite catalyst for the reduction of NOx emission from dual-pressure nitric acid plants via NH3-SCR. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of iron loading in the natural zeolite-supported catalyst on its catalytic performance in NOx conversion. The investigated support was firstly formed into pellets and then impregnated with various contents of Fe precursor. Physicochemical characteristics of the catalyst were determined by XRF, XRD, low-temperature N2 sorption, FT-IR, and UV–Vis. The catalytic performance of the catalyst formed into pellets was tested on a laboratory scale within the range of 250–450 °C using tail gases from a pilot nitric acid plant. The results of this study indicated that the presence of various iron species, including natural isolated Fe3+ and the introduced FexOy oligomers, contributed to efficient NOx reduction, especially in the high-temperature range, where the NOx conversion rate exceeded 90%.

The application of layered zeolites of MWW topology in environmental catalysis has attracted growing attention in recent years; however, only a few studies have explored their performance in selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR). Thus, our work describes, for the first time, the one-pot synthesis of Fe-modified NH3-SCR catalysts supported on MCM-22, MCM-36, and ITQ-2. The calculated chemical composition of the materials was Si/Al of 30 and 5 wt.% of Fe. The reported results indicated a correlation between the arrangement of MWW layers and the form of iron in the zeolitic structure. We have observed that one-pot synthesis resulted in high dispersion of Fe3+ sites, which significantly enhanced low-temperature activity and prevented N2O generation during the reaction. All of the investigated samples exhibited almost 100% NO conversion at 250 °C. The most satisfactory activity was exhibited by Fe-modified MCM-36, since 50% of NO reduction was obtained at 150 °C for this catalyst. This effect can be explained by the abundance of isolated Fe3+ species, which are active in low-temperature NH3-SCR. Additionally, SiO2 pillars present in MCM-36 provided an additional surface for the deposition of the active phase.

Natural zeolite of the heulandite-type framework was modified with iron and tested as a catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia (NH3-SCR) in the temperature range of 150–450 °C. The catalyst was prepared at a laboratory scale in a powder form and then the series of experiments of its shaping into tablets was conducted. Physicochemical studies of the catalyst (N2 sorption at −196 °C, FT-IR, XRD, UV-vis) were performed to determine the textural and structural properties and identify the surface functional groups, the crystalline structure of the catalysts and the form and aggregation of the active phase. The activity tests over the shaped catalyst were performed industry-reflecting conditions, using tail gases from the pilot nitric acid plant. The influence of a temperature, catalyst load, and the amount of reducing agent (ammonia) on the NOx reduction process were investigated. The results of catalytic tests that were performed on model gas mixture showed that non-modified clinoptilolite exhibited around 58% conversion of NO at 450 °C. The temperature window of the shaped catalyst shifted to a higher temperature range in comparison to the powder sample. The catalytic performance of the shaped Fe-clinoptilolite in the industry-reflecting conditions was satisfactory, especially at 450 °C. Additionally, it was observed that the ratio of N2O concentration downstream and upstream of the catalytic bed was below 1, which indicated that the catalyst exhibited activity in both DeNOx and DeN2O process.

The goal of the study was to modify activated carbon (AC) with nitrogen groups and ceria and to test the obtained materials in low temperature selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides. For that purpose, the starting AC was oxidized with HNO3 of various concentrations, modified with urea and doped with 0.5 wt.% of Ce. It was observed that the increased concentration of acid influenced the catalytic activity, since textural and surface chemistry of activated carbon was changed. The most active sample was that modified with 14 M HNO3 and it reached 96% of NO conversion at 300 °C. Additionally, the addition of Ce improved the catalytic performance of modified AC, and NO was reduced according to oxidation–reduction mechanism, characteristic for supported metal oxides. Nevertheless, the samples promoted with Ce emitted significantly higher amount of CO2 comparing to the non-promoted ones.

A series of materials based on activated carbon (AC) with copper deposited in various amounts were prepared using an incipient wetness impregnation method and tested as catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia. The samples were poisoned with SO2 and regenerated in order to analyze their susceptibility to deactivation by the harmful component of exhaust gas. NO conversion over the fresh catalyst doped with 10 wt.% of Cu reached 81% of NO conversion at 140 °C and about 90% in the temperature range of 260–300 °C. The rate of poisoning with SO2 was dependent on Cu loading, but in general, it lowered NO conversion due to the formation of (NH4)2SO4 deposits that blocked the active sites of the catalysts. After regeneration, the catalytic activity of the materials was restored and NO conversion exceeded 70% for all of the samples.

Nitrogen dioxide is one of the most dangerous air pollutants, because its high concentration in air can be directly harmful to human health. It is also responsible for photochemical smog and acid rains. One of the most commonly used techniques to tackle this problem in large combustion plants is selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Commercial SCR installations are often equipped with a V2O5−WO3/TiO2 catalyst. In power plants which utilize a solid fuel boiler, catalysts are exposed to unfavorable conditions. In the paper, factors responsible for deactivation of such a catalyst are comprehensively reviewed where different types of deactivation mechanism, like mechanical, chemical or thermal mechanisms, are separately described. The paper presents the impact of sulfur trioxide and ammonia slip on the catalyst deactivation as well as the problem of ammonium bisulfate formation. The latter is one of the crucial factors influencing the loss of catalytic activity. The majority of issues with fast catalyst deactivation occur when the catalyst work in off-design conditions, in particular in too high or too low temperatures.

One of the most harmful compounds are nitrogen oxides. Currently, the common industrial method of nitrogen oxides emission control is selective catalytic reduction with ammonia (NH3-SCR). Among all of the recognized measures, NH3-SCR is the most effective and reaches even up to 90% of NOx conversion. The presence of the catalyst provides the surface for the reaction to proceed and lowers the activation energy. The optimum temperature of the process is in the range of 150–450 °C and the majority of the commercial installations utilize vanadium oxide (V2O5) supported on titanium oxide (TiO2) in a form of anatase, wash coated on a honeycomb monolith or deposited on a plate-like structures. In order to improve the mechanical stability and chemical resistance, the system is usually promoted with tungsten oxide (WO3) or molybdenum oxide (MoO3). The efficiency of the commercial V2O5-WO3-TiO2 catalyst of NH3-SCR, can be gradually decreased with time of its utilization. Apart from the physical deactivation, such as high temperature sintering, attrition and loss of the active elements by volatilization, the system can suffer from chemical poisoning. All of the presented deactivating agents pass for the most severe poisons of V2O5-WO3-TiO2. In order to minimize the harmful influence of H2O, SO2, alkali metals, heavy metals and halogens, a number of methods has been developed. Some of them improve the resistance to poisons and some are focused on recovery of the catalytic system. Nevertheless, since the amount of highly contaminated fuels combusted in power plants and industry gradually increases, more effective poisoning-preventing and regeneration measures are still in high demand.

MCM-22, MCM-36, and ITQ-2 zeolites with the intended Si/Al molar ratios of 15, 25, and 50 were synthetized and tested as catalysts for dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether and dehydration of ethanol to diethyl ether and ethylene. The surface concentration of acid sites was regulated by the synthesis of zeolite precursors with different aluminum content in the zeolite framework, while the influence of porous structure on the overall efficiency of alcohol conversion was analyzed by application of zeolitic materials with different types of porosity—microporous MCM-22 as well as microporous-mesoporous MCM-36 and ITQ-2. The zeolitic samples were characterized with respect to their: chemical composition (ICP-OES), structure (XRD, FT-IR), texture (N2 sorption), and surface acidity (NH3-TPD). Comparison of the catalytic activity of the studied zeolitic catalysts with other reported catalytic systems, including zeolites with the similar Si/Al ratio as well as γ-Al2O3 (one of the commercial catalysts for methanol dehydration), shows a great potential of MCM-22, MCM-36, and ITQ-2 in the reactions of alcohols dehydration.

The synthesis method of metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) has an important impact on their properties, including their performance in catalytic reactions. In this work we report on how the performance of [Cu3(TMA)2(H2O)3]n (HKUST-1) and Ce@HKUST-1 in the reaction of CO oxidation depends on the synthesis method of HKUST-1 and the way the cerium active phase is introduced to it. The HKUST-1 is synthesised in two ways: via the conventional solvothermal method and in the presence of a cationic surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)). Obtained MOFs are used as supports for cerium oxide, which is deposited on their surfaces by applying wet and incipient wetness impregnation methods. To determine textural properties, structure, morphology, and thermal stability, the HKUST-1 supports and Ce@HKUST-1 catalysts are characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 sorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is proven that the synthesis method of HKUST-1 has a significant impact on its morphology, surface area, and thermal stability. The synthesis method also influences the dispersion and the morphology of the deposited cerium oxide. Last but not least, the synthesis method affects the catalytic activity of the obtained material.

Montmorillonite intercalated with mixed alumina–iron (III) oxide pillars and promoted with hexamminecobalt (III) chloride was studied in selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH 3 . Pillaring process extended the interlayer spacing by 0.236 nm and increased specific surface area (SSA BET ) from 33 m 2 up to 299 m 2 . Interlayer space width did not change after calcination process, but high temperature could cause decomposition of hexamminecobalt (III) – [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ , possibly to Co 2+ . Promotion of hexamminecobalt (III) chloride to pillared clay did not significantly change SSA BET . The intercalation process influenced positively selective catalytic reduction activity, but very high formation of N 2 O was observed. Pillared clay, promoted with [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ , showed higher selective catalytic reduction activity and much lower N 2 O formation than unpromoted, pillared sample. Clay with interlayer cations exchanged for [Co(NH 3 ) 6 ] 3+ , without pillaring, showed no selective catalytic reduction activity, but still produced high amounts of N 2 O.

Activated carbons modified with ammonia were used as sorbents of SO 2 . The SO 2 uptake was dependent on both texture and type of surface groups introduced onto the studied materials. The most important parameter was the size of micropores, which positively influenced the amount adsorbed. Differing chemical properties had a mixed influence. The oxygen-containing groups negatively affected SO 2 amount adsorbed. N-containing moieties had a positive influence, while the amount of introduced nitrogen was not the major parameter where SO 2 uptake was concerned, possibly due to the differences in the type of introduced surface species.

This paper presents experimental results of the sorption-dilatometric kinetics of methane and carbon dioxide on a sample of hard coal from one of the coal mines in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The experiment included isothermal and non-isothermal-isobaric stages. For the isothermal stage, it was found that, up to a certain point (about 8 dm3/kg), the sample’s expansion was linearly related to the amount of gas absorbed. Studies on dilatometric kinetics under constant pressure, with a reduction in temperature, indicate that a dominant share of the heat-expanding properties of carbonaceous material influences changes in the size of the sample in the coal-gas system. It was also found that the sample expansion, due to temperature change, was 2.25‰, for the sample in both the vacuum and the non-adsorbing gas atmosphere.
