Serological detection of echinococcosis is crucial for diagnosis and management. We evaluated the new blot assay Euroline-WB (ELB, Euroimmun) which consists of a Western blot with vesicle antigens and a line blot part with recombinant antigens from (, genus-specific EgAgB) and (species-specific Em18 and Em95), in comparison to a commercial Western Blot (EWB, LDBio) for detection and species differentiation of echinococcosis within routine laboratory diagnostics. Thirty-five serum samples from 35 patients classified according to a standardized classification were included in the analysis. Out of 24 cases of proven and probable infection with or 16 (66.7%) and 15 (62.5%) were correctly identified on species level by EWB and ELB, respectively. False species were assigned in two cases by EWB but none by ELB. Negative blot results in patients with proven infections were noticed in 8.3% (ELB) compared to 4.2% (EWB), but were limited to patients with antiparasitic therapy or post-surgery indicating a treatment-induced loss of antibody activity. Thus, identification of infection at least on the genus level was possible in 23/24 (95.8%) and 19/24 (79.2%) of patients by EWB and ELB (or 22/24 patients (91.7%) including borderline results of ELB), respectively. Recombinant Em18 and Em95 were highly specific for detection of infection but differed in sensitivity (Em18 56% and 80 %, and Em95 22% and 20% in proven and probable infections, respectively). Advantages of ELB are the standardized analysis of the banding pattern by EUROLineScan software and a faster turn-around-time.

The article deals with the history and the problems of ethnic religions in nowadays Europe. Based on a definition and discussion of Paganism and Neopaganism, and a thereby following definition and discussion of differences between ethnic religion and monotheistic religion, the article tries to get the answer as to whether ethnic religion, nowadays, is a Political Paganism, a renaissance of historical pagan beliefs or a mixture. To answer the question, the problem of the article will be exemplified by an analysis of two types of paganism in contemporary Europe: the Asatru in Denmark and the Mari Native Religion in Russia. Revived in the 1970s, the Asatru is a rather new phenomenon as well in Denmark as in other countries of the world. On 15 November 1997 the Forn Siðr association, the Asatru and Vanatru Association in Denmark, was established, in 2003 recognized, and registered as an official religion in Denmark. Whereas the Mari Native Religion, a religion practiced by the Mari people in a Russian region of Mari El Republic, 800 kilometres east of Moscow, can lead its roots several thousand years back.

Logical Operations Test (BLOT) was developed for assessing the transition to formal operational thinking. BLOT is a 35 item multiple-choice test which examines all of the operations which comprise the logico-mathematical structure of formal operations in Piaget’s theory. The test was translated into Serbian and used in previously reported research. This work deals with two additional parallel versions of the Serbian BLOT. For each original BLOT item two more parallel items have been constructed by changing the item content and leaving the logical structure of the item the same. Sample consisted of 517 primary and secondary school students. Rasch analysis confirmed that the vast majority of items maintained invariance across at least two test versions: for 19 original items both parallel items maintained their invariance, for 14 items one of the parallel items had similar parameters and only 2 items did not remain invariant in the parallel tests.

OBJECTIVE: Blood donors in Brazil have been routinely screened for HTLV-I/II since 1993. A study was performed to estimate the prevalence of HTLV-I/II infection in a low risk population and to better understand determinants associated with seropositivity. METHODS: HTLV-I/II seropositive (n=135), indeterminate (n=167) and seronegative blood donors (n=116) were enrolled in an open prevalence prospective cohort study. A cross-sectional epidemiological study of positive, indeterminate and seronegative HTLV-I/II subjects was conducted to assess behavioral and environmental risk factors for seropositivity. HTLV-I/II serological status was confirmed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA) and Western blot (WB). RESULTS: The three groups were not homogeneous. HTLV-I/II seropositivity was associated to past blood transfusion and years of schooling, a marker of socioeconomic status, and use of non-intravenous illegal drugs. CONCLUSIONS: The study results reinforce the importance of continuous monitoring and improvement of blood donor selection process.OBJETIVO: Doadores de sangue no Brasil têm sido avaliados sorologicamente para o HTLV-I/II desde 1993. Assim, realizou-se estudo para estimar a prevalência dessa infecção em população de baixo risco e para melhor compreender os determinantes associados à soropositividade. MÉTODOS: Doadores de sangue soropositivos (n=135), soroindeterminados (n=167) e soronegativos (n=116) foram arrolados como participantes de uma coorte aberta e prevalente. Estudo transversal dos participantes desses três grupos avaliou fatores de risco comportamentais e ambientais para soropositividade. O status sorológico foi definido usando a reação de EIA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) e o teste Western blot (WB). RESULTADOS: Os três grupos apresentaram heterogeneidade entre si. A soropositividade mostrou-se associada à história pregressa de transfusão de sangue, em nível educacional, como um marcador de condição socioeconômica e ao uso de drogas ilegais não endovenosas. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados confirmam a importância de um monitoramento e refinamento do processo de seleção dos doadores de sangue.
