Abstract Automated blood vessel segmentation is critical for biomedical image analysis, as vessel morphology changes are associated with numerous pathologies. Still, precise segmentation is difficult due to the complexity of vascular structures, anatomical variations across patients, the scarcity of annotated public datasets, and the quality of images. Our goal is to provide a foundation on the topic and identify a robust baseline model for application to vascular segmentation using a new imaging modality, Hierarchical Phase-Contrast Tomography (HiP-CT). We begin with an extensive review of current machine-learning approaches for vascular segmentation across various organs. Our work introduces a meticulously curated training dataset, verified by double annotators, consisting of vascular data from three kidneys imaged using HiP-CT as part of the Human Organ Atlas Project. HiP-CT pioneered at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in 2020, revolutionizes 3D organ imaging by offering a resolution of around 20 μm/voxel and enabling highly detailed localised zooms up to 1–2 μm/voxel without physical sectioning. We leverage the nnU-Net framework to evaluate model performance on this high-resolution dataset, using both known and novel samples, and implementing metrics tailored for vascular structures. Our comprehensive review and empirical analysis on HiP-CT data sets a new standard for evaluating machine learning models in high-resolution organ imaging. Our three experiments yielded Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) scores of 0.9523, 0.9410, and 0.8585, respectively. Nevertheless, DSC primarily assesses voxel-to-voxel concordance, overlooking several crucial characteristics of the vessels and should not be the sole metric for deciding the performance of vascular segmentation. Our results show that while segmentations yielded reasonably high scores-such as centerline DSC ranging from 0.82 to 0.88, certain errors persisted. Specifically, large vessels that collapsed due to the lack of hydrostatic pressure (HiP-CT is an ex vivo technique) were segmented poorly. Moreover, decreased connectivity in finer vessels and higher segmentation errors at vessel boundaries were observed. Such errors, particularly in significant vessels, obstruct the understanding of the structures by interrupting vascular tree connectivity. Our study establishes the benchmark across various evaluation metrics, for vascular segmentation of HiP-CT imaging data, an imaging technology that has the potential to substantively shift our understanding of human vascular networks.

Abstract Treatment of bacterial infections with antibiotic resistance is complicated. For this reason, new therapeutic methods are needed to control bacterial infections. Therefore, it is necessary to discover new antibiotics from medicinal plants that can destroy drug-resistant bacteria. Essential oils (EO) of some medicinal plants have antimicrobial effects and can be used as antimicrobial agents in the treatment of infections and food industries. The aim of this study was to determine the EO composition and antimicrobial effects of EO and polyphenols profile of Salvia Sahendica roots for the first time. Chemical compounds and antibacterial activity of EOs against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus as gram-positive and Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as gram- negative bacteria were evaluated using microtiter broth dilution method. Studied organs of S. sahendica showed significant diversity in terms of type and percentage of essential oil and polyphenol compounds. Overall, 44, 46, 42, and 45 compounds were identified in the essential oil of leaves, flowers, stems, and roots of this plant, which constituted 99.6, 99.3, 98.2, and 99.4% of total oil composition, respectively. The current study collectively demonstrated inhibitory effects ranged from strong (S. aureus) to low inhibition (P. aeruginosa). According to the HPLC result, the amounts of coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, and gallic acid compounds in the root are higher than in other plant parts, which indicate that the root can be a suitable source for the production of these valuable polyphenol compounds. Due to the results, it is possible to hope for the application of EO from S. sahendica as natural antibacterial in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Background and purpose: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, recurrent, and autoimmune disease of the digestive system with intra- and extra-intestinal manifestations. IBD is divided into Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). The prevalence exceeds 3 million people per year and is reported more frequently in industrialized countries than in developing ones. IBD is a lifelong disease that affects the quality of life of sufferers and also increases the risk of colon cancer due to chronic inflammation. Today, the diagnosis and follow-up of this disease is based on history, imaging of the gastrointestinal tract, and pathology findings, which is expensive and has the risk of damage to the gastrointestinal tract, for this reason, the use of new methods has attracted the attention of researchers. Saliva is easy to use, cheap, has no risk of infection, and is always available. The changes of some parameters in the serum and saliva of IBD patients have been investigated, but no study has been done on aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Studies have shown that AST and ALT can be used as a marker for cell damage and inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the salivary and serum changes of these two markers in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 1402 in the gastroenterology clinic of Imam Reza Hospital in Tehran. 30 people with IBD with a definitive diagnosis by pathology as the patient group and 30 healthy people who visited the hospital for an annual checkup participated in the study as the control group. First, the patients were asked to wash their mouths and swallow the remaining liquid, and without actively moving the mouth and tongue, pour the secreted saliva into the sterile falcon tube. Then, by a skilled person, 5 ml of venous blood was taken from the cubital area of the patient and put into the clot tube. Immediately after collection, the samples were centrifuged at 4000 rpm for 5 minutes. Blood serum and non-stimulating saliva supernatant were transferred into a microtube and stored in a freezer at -70 degrees Celsius. Enzyme activity was measured using the photometric method according to the manufacturer's instructions (Pars Azmon-Shiraz) and the data was analyzed by t-test with SPSS version 22 software. Abstract This research focuses on modeling CO2 absorption into alkanolamine solvents using multilayer perceptron (MLP), radial basis function network (RBF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), networks, and response surface methodology (RSM). The parameters, including solvent density, mass fraction, temperature, liquid phase equilibrium constant, CO2 loading, and partial pressure of CO2, were used as input factors in the models. In addition, the value of CO2 mass flux was considered as output in the models. Trainlm, trainbr, and trainscg algorithms trained the networks. The results showed that the best number of neurons for MLP with one layer is 16; with two layers, 5 neurons in the first layer and 12 neurons in the second layer; and with three layers, 9 neurons in the first layer, 5 neurons in the second layer, and 1 neuron in the third layer. The best spread in RBF was found to be 2.202 for optimal network performance. Furthermore, statistical data analysis revealed that the trainlm function performs best. The coefficients of determination for RSM, MLP, RBF, and SVM for optimized structures are obtained at 0.9802, 0.9996, 0.9940, and 0.8946, respectively. The results demonstrate that MLP and RBF networks can model CO2 absorption using the trainlm, trainbr, and trainscg algorithms.

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical 1% medroxyprogesterone in corneal epithelial healing after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Methods: In this placebo-controlled double-masked randomized contralateral eye study, 66 eyes of 33 patients with myopia and myopia-astigmatism were assigned into two groups to receive either 1% topical medroxyprogesterone (intervention) or artificial tear (placebo) at the end of PRK surgery. The patients were followed up daily for 5 days until epithelial healing was achieved. The time taken for epithelial healing was the main outcome measure. Findings: The mean age of the subjects was 32.97 ± 7.6 years and 46 individuals were female (69.7%). All baseline refractive characteristics were comparable between the groups. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of epithelial defect size on Day 1 (P: 0.67). Both groups exhibited a consistent pattern of decreasing epithelial defect size from Day 1 to Day 5, with the control group having slightly worse initial values. There were no significant differences between the groups in the following days. Both groups showed substantial reductions in the epithelial defect size, but the intervention group showed a more prominent decrease on Day 2. The intervention did not show a significant statistical difference compared to the control group, and both groups ended up with a similar outcome. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the topical 1% medroxyprogesterone does not significantly affect the healing of corneal epithelium after PRK.

Abstract Introduction Depression and anxiety are pervasive mental health disorders with substantial global burdens. Probiotics, live microorganisms known for their health benefits, have emerged as a potential therapeutic intervention for these conditions. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the strain-specific effects of probiotics on relieving depressive and anxiety symptoms while elucidating underlying mechanisms. Methods EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL and PubMed/Medline were systematically queried to identify studies released until May 15, 2024. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) that employed standardized assessment tools for depression and anxiety namely Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS), or Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) were included. Results 12 RCTs involving 707 participants were included. Seven RCTs utilizing the BDI questionnaire demonstrated a significant decrease in depressive symptoms favoring probiotics containing strains such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus salivarius, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium breve, and Bifidobacterium longum (MD: -2.69, CI95%: -4.22/-1.16, p value: 0.00). Conversely, RCTs using HAMD showed a non-significant reduction in depressive symptoms (MD: -1.40, CI95%: -3.29/0.48, p value: 0.14). RCTs employing DASS and MADRS scales also showed no significant differences. Conclusion This meta-analysis offers valuable insights into the strain-specific effects of probiotics containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species on depressive and anxiety symptoms. While our findings suggest a significant reduction in depressive symptoms based on the BDI scale favoring probiotics, the lack of significant effects observed on the HAMD, DASS, and MADRS scales underscores the complexity inherent in these conditions. It is imperative to acknowledge the mixed results across different measurement scales, indicating the need for cautious interpretation. Therefore, we advocate for a nuanced understanding of probiotics’ impacts on various dimensions of mood, emphasizing the necessity for further research.

Abstract In this study, a spatiotemporal disaggregated simulation model was developed based on water–food–energy (WFE) nexus approach to assess water and food supply security considering ecosystem provisioning services. The main components of the developed model in this study (SD-WFE model) are population, water, agriculture, and energy modules. The model, which was developed using system dynamics (SD) approach, was utilized to simulate effectiveness of sectoral municipal, industrial, and agricultural water and energy consumption management and environmental protection policies in improving ecosystem provisioning services during a 20-year period. Through sensitivity analysis utilizing the Monte Carlo model, the study addresses the formulation of sustainable water resource policies across four main categories: water demand management, water supply management, food resource management, and energy resource demand management. Additionally, it explores the integration of policies within an optimal framework. The simulation of proposed solutions revealed that a combination of water demand management and food resource management yielded the most promising outcome. Specifically, the recommended solution entails enhancing water irrigation efficiency by 18% through the expansion of pressurized irrigation network coverage, adjusting cropping patterns by 14%, reducing agricultural product losses by 8% via improved food supply management, minimizing food demand by 9% due to reduced food consumption losses, and achieving an annual 10% increase in crop performance. These selected policies form the foundation for sustainable water resource management strategies.

Abstract Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a rare malignancy affecting the lymphatic system. Our study examined the incidence rates of adult HL based on sex, race/ethnicity, age, and histological subgroups in the United States (US) from 2000 to 2020. Data for this study were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 22 database. HL patients were identified utilizing the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology version 3 and categorized as classical HL, lymphocyte-rich/mixed cell/lymphocyte depleted, nodular sclerosis, classical HL, not otherwise specified, and nodular lymphocyte-predominant HL. The study reported average annual percent change (AAPC). All estimates were presented as counts and age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) per 100,000 individuals. Between 2000 and 2019, a total of 70,924 cases of HL were reported in the US. Classical HL was the predominant subtype (94.27%), and most incident cases were among non-Hispanic Whites (66.92%) and those aged 20–29 years (24.86%). The ASIR per 100,000 population was 3.83 for men and 2.92 for women. Both sexes showed declines in the AAPCs between 2000 and 2019 (− 0.64% [− 0.99, − 0.28] and − 0.40% [− 0.77, − 0.03] for men and women, respectively). There was a significant decrease in ASIRs after COVID-19 among both sexes (percent change: − 7.49% [− 11.58, − 3.40]). Throughout all age groups, men had a higher incidence rate compared to women, except for those aged 20–29 years. Although the overall HL incidence rate was lowered in the study period from 2000 to 2019, a dramatic decrease in ASIRs of HL patients following COVID-19 pandemic was observed.

BackgroundAnimal and human studies have demonstrated that the saffron and the active components of saffron, including crocin, crocetin, and safranal, possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. In this meta-analysis, the preclinical evidence and potential mechanism of saffron were explored in an animal model of ovalbumin-induced asthma.MethodsStudies related to saffron and its constituents in an animal model of ovalbumin-induced asthma from the beginning to March 2024 were searched from Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated using the 15-item CAMARADES checklist. Data analysis was performed using STATA software version 17.ResultsThirteen studies with 536 animals (268 animals in the intervention group and 268 animals in the ovalbumin-induced group) were analyzed. The meta-analysis findings demonstrated that saffron and its constituents played a significant role in reducing total WBC, eosinophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts. Moreover, saffron showed a significant decrease in the levels of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IgE, histamine, endothelin, nitric oxide, and nitrite. Moreover, saffron was found to elevate EC50 thresholds and lower maximum response rates in experimental animals. The analysis revealed a significant identification of modulation in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers and miRNAs pathways.ConclusionSaffron and its components may impact ovalbumin-induced asthma model in animals through anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory pathways, as well as improving pulmonary function and modulating ER stress markers and miRNAs pathways. As a result, saffron should be considered for further clinical trials in individuals suffering from asthma.

Abstract Background Complementary medicine is an interesting field for extracting bioactive compounds from various plant and animal sources. The hepatoprotective effect of the methanolic extract of a species of sea cucumber called Holothuria leucospilota in an animal model of liver cancer caused by dimethyl nitrosamine (DMN) was studied. Methods Wistar female rats were randomly divided into five groups (n = 12): control (intact), positive control (received 1% DMN [10 mg/kg/week, intraperitoneally] for 12 weeks), and three treatment groups (received 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg/day H. leucospilota extract orally for 12 weeks along with intraperitoneal administration of 1% DMN [10 mg/kg/week]). In all groups, ultrasound was performed on the liver every week to check its density. Blood sampling and liver isolation were performed on three occasions, at 4, 8, and 12 weeks, to check liver enzymes and the histopathological condition of the liver tissue (every week, four animals from each group were randomly selected). Results Liver density changes were evident from the eighth week onward in the positive control group. Histopathological results indicated pathologic changes in the positive control group after 4 weeks. The increase in liver enzymes in the positive control group was significantly different from that in the treatment and control groups. Conclusions We demonstrated the hepatoprotective effect of H. leucospilota on DMN‐induced liver damage in rats using biochemical and histological parameters and ultrasonography. More additional research (in silico or in vitro) is needed to find the exact mechanism and the main biological compound in H. leucospilota.

Several pharmacological effects were described for Nigella sativa (N. sativa) seed and it has been used traditionally to treat various diseases. In this review article, the updated and comprehensive anti-oxidant effects of N. sativa and its main constituent, thymoquinone (TQ), on various disorders are described. The relevant articles were retrieved through PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus up to December 31, 2023. Various extracts and essential oils of N. sativa showed anti-oxidant effects on cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal and liver, neurologic, respiratory, and urogenital diseases by decreasing and increasing various oxidant and anti-oxidant marketers, respectively. The main constituent of the plant, TQ, also showed similar anti-oxidant effects as the plant itself. The anti-oxidant effects of different extracts and essential oils of N. sativa were demonstrated in various studies which were perhaps due to the main constituent of the plant, TQ. The findings of this review article suggest the possible therapeutic effect of N. sativa and TQ in oxidative stress disorders.

Abstract The cardiac conduction system (CCS) is a network of specialized cardiomyocytes that coordinates electrical impulse generation and propagation for synchronized heart contractions. Although the components of the CCS, including the sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node, His bundle, bundle branches, and Purkinje fibers, were anatomically discovered more than 100 years ago, their molecular constituents and regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we demonstrate the transcriptomic landscape of the postnatal mouse CCS at a single-cell resolution with spatial information. Integration of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics uncover region-specific markers and zonation patterns of expression. Network inference shows heterogeneous gene regulatory networks across the CCS. Notably, region-specific gene regulation is recapitulated in vitro using neonatal mouse atrial and ventricular myocytes overexpressing CCS-specific transcription factors, Tbx3 and/or Irx3. This finding is supported by ATAC-seq of different CCS regions, Tbx3 ChIP-seq, and Irx motifs. Overall, this study provides comprehensive molecular profiles of the postnatal CCS and elucidates gene regulatory mechanisms contributing to its heterogeneity.

Abstract Purpose Child marriage remains a significant socio-cultural phenomenon with profound implications for the quality of marital relationships, particularly among young women. This study investigates the association between child marriage and the quality of marriage among young married women in Iran. Methods This study employed a population-based cross-sectional research design. A total of 70 young women, aged 18–20 years, who had married before reaching 18 years of age, were selected from four primary health care (PHC) centers in Papi District, Lorestan Province, Iran, employing a systematic random sampling approach. Subjects were categorized into women experiencing relationship distress and those without such distress using the Quality of Marriage Index (QMI). Concurrently, their level of sexual satisfaction was assessed utilizing the Hudson’s Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS). Furthermore, Social Support was evaluated using the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ). Results The mean age (SD) of women was 18.9 (0.7) years, and their mean age (SD) of marriage was 15.2 (2.1) years. Women experiencing distress showed significant differences in age of menarche (P = 0.006), education levels (P = 0.039), spouses’ education (P = 0.025), spouses’ occupations (P = 0.004), household income satisfaction (P = 0.041), and household structure (P = 0.045). Abstract Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the prehospital rapid emergency medicine score (pREMS) for predicting the outcomes of hospitalized patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who died, were discharged, were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), or were admitted to the operating room (OR) within 72 h. Methods A retrospective cohort analysis was performed on a sample of 513 TBI patients admitted to the emergency department (ED) of Besat Hospital in 2023. Only patients of both sexes aged 18 years or older who were not pregnant and had adequate documentation of vital signs were included in the analysis. Patients who died during transport and patients who were transferred from other hospitals were excluded. The predictive power of the pREMS for each outcome was assessed by calculating the sensitivity and specificity curves and by analyzing the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Abstract There are two major forms of solar energy that are typically utilized: photovoltaic and concentrated applications. The application of fractal glass texture to photovoltaic solar panels is a cutting-edge technique in the field of solar panels that generate electricity from exposure to light. When it comes to studying the environmental implications of a product during its development and commercialization, the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach is an excellent technique that can be utilized. The purpose of this study is to offer a thorough understanding of the product’s effects on the environment by taking into consideration a wide range of criteria, including environmental, economic, and other evaluations. Through the utilization of the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and the SimaPro software, this paper presents a comparative analysis of conventional solar panels and fractal glass texture panels. During the course of this research, 18 midpoint indicators and three endpoint indices were investigated. In addition, a sensitivity analysis has been carried out on the fractal property of the panel in order to evaluate the impact that it has on environmental impacts and damages. For the purpose of this study, three distinct levels of fractal coating were applied to the panel surface: one percent, three percent, and five percent. As a result of the data, it was determined that the “Photovoltaic cell single-Si wafer” and the “Transport, freight, sea, transoceanic tanker” had the most significant impact on the midpoint and endpoint indices for both panels, respectively. Furthermore, there is a direct association between the rise in fractal coating on panels and the reduction in environmental repercussions, approximately. This correlation exists because of several factors.

Abstract Introduction Laryngeal cancers account for one-third of all head and neck cancers. We aimed to report the incidence trends of laryngeal cancer over 2000–2020 in the United States (US), by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and histological subtypes. Methods Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 22 database were used to identify patients with laryngeal cancer based on the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, version 3. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) for laryngeal cancer, adjusted for reporting delays, were calculated. The Joinpoint Regression Program was then utilized to determine annual percent changes (APCs) and average annual percent changes (AAPCs) in the trends. The analysis excluded data from 2020 to prevent potential bias related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results A total of 104,991 cases of laryngeal cancer were identified in the US from 2000 to 2019. Squamous cell carcinoma was the predominant subtype, accounting for 94.53% of cases. Above 73.20% occurred among non-Hispanic whites, with the highest incidence observed among individuals aged 55–69 years (46.71%). The ASIRs were 5.98 and 1.25 per 100,000 population for men and women, respectively. Over 2000–2019, there was a significant reduction in ASIRs for laryngeal cancer in both sexes. Non-Hispanic black men exhibited the highest ASIR (9.13 per 100,000) and the largest decline in the ASIRs over 2000–2019 (AAPC: -3.26%). Conclusions Laryngeal cancer incidence rates showed a decline from 2000 to 2019, in addition to 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional research is required to investigate risk factors and their influence on incidence rates of laryngeal cancer.

Abstract Non-renewable energy sources, including fossil fuels, are a type of energy whose consumption rate far exceeds its natural production rate. Therefore, non-renewable resources will be exhausted if alternative energy is not fully developed, leading to an energy crisis in the near future. In this paper, a mathematical model has been proposed for the design of the biomass supply chain of field residues that includes several fields where residue is transferred to hubs after collecting the residue in the hub, the residue is transferred to reactors. In reactors, the residue is converted into gas, which is transferred to condenser and transformers, converted into electricity and sent to demand points through the network. In this paper, the criteria of stability and disturbance were considered, which have been less discussed in related research, and the purpose of the proposed model was to maximize the profit from the sale of energy, including the selling price minus the costs. Genetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) algorithm have been used to solve the model. Then, to prove the complexity of the problem, different and random examples have been presented in different dimensions of the problem. Also, the efficiency of the algorithm in small and large dimensions was proved by comparing GA and SA due to the low deviation of the solutions and the methods used have provided acceptable results suitable for all decision-makers. Also, the effectiveness of the algorithm in small and large dimensions is proven by comparing the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing, and the genetic algorithm's values are better, considering the deviation of 2.9%.and have provided solution methods suitable for all decision makers.

Abstract Background Acute peripheral neuropathy, also known as Parsonage-Turner syndrome or neuralgic amyotrophy, mostly affects the upper brachial plexus trunks, which include the shoulder girdle. It is typically accompanied by abrupt, intense pain, weakness, and sensory disruption. The etiology and causes of this disease are still unknown because of its low prevalence, however viral reactions-induced inflammation is one of its frequent causes. Case presentation Here, we introduce a professional wrestler patient who was diagnosed with PTS after vaccination and was treated, and we review some articles in this field. Conclusion When it comes to shoulder-girdle complaints and pain, Parsonage-Turner syndrome can be a differential diagnosis. Corticosteroids during the acute period, followed by physical therapy, appear to be an efficient way to manage pain, inflammation, muscular atrophy, and the process of recovering to full nerve regeneration.

ABSTRACT Background The coexistence of diabetes and hypertension is prevalent due to shared risk factors. Pharmacological treatment has been reported to be effective in managing both conditions. However, treatment effectiveness depends on the extent to which a patient adheres to their treatment. Poor adherence to long‐term treatment for chronic diseases is a growing global problem of significant magnitude. Several interventions have been developed to help improve medication adherence in patients with coexisting diabetes and hypertension. This review aimed to determine the characteristics of these interventions and their impact on medication adherence. Methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PRISMA guidelines and registered in the PROSPERO International Registry of Systematic Reviews. Studies were searched in the databases CINAHL, Embase and Medline to identify relevant articles published during 2012–2023. The search concepts included ‘medication adherence’, ‘hypertension’, ‘diabetes’ and ‘intervention’. Studies were included if they were in English and evaluated the impact of an intervention aimed at promoting adherence to medications for both diabetes and hypertension. Results Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, with five demonstrating a statistically significant improvement in medication adherence. Of the five studies that improved medication adherence, four were multifaceted and one was a single‐component intervention. All successful interventions addressed at least two factors influencing non‐adherence. Patient education was the foundation of most of the successful interventions, supported by other strategies, such as follow‐ups and reminders. Conclusion Multifaceted interventions that also included patient education had a positive impact on medication adherence in patients with coexisting diabetes and hypertension. Improving adherence in patients with coexisting diabetes and hypertension requires a multipronged approach that considers the range of factors impacting medication‐taking. Patient or Public Contribution This systematic review provides comprehensive insights into the benefits of patient‐centred approaches in intervention development and strengthening. Such patient involvement ensures that medication adherence interventions are more relevant, acceptable and effective, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and more meaningful patient engagement in healthcare research.

BackgroundWith the widespread adoption of digital health records, including electronic discharge summaries (eDS), it is important to assess their usability in order to understand whether they meet the needs of the end users. While there are established approaches for evaluating the usability of electronic health records, there is a lack of knowledge regarding suitable evaluation methods specifically for eDS. ObjectiveThis literature review aims to identify the usability evaluation approaches used in eDS. MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, ACM Digital Library, MEDLINE, and ProQuest databases from their inception until July 2023. The study information was extracted and reported in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). We included studies that assessed the usability of eDS, and the systems used to display eDS. ResultsA total of 12 records, including 11 studies and 1 thesis, met the inclusion criteria. The included studies used qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods approaches and reported the use of various usability evaluation methods. Heuristic evaluation was the most used method to assess the usability of eDS systems (n=7), followed by the think-aloud approach (n=5) and laboratory testing (n=3). These methods were used either individually or in combination with usability questionnaires (n=3) and qualitative semistructured interviews (n=4) for evaluating eDS usability issues. The evaluation processes incorporated usability metrics such as user performance, satisfaction, efficiency, and impact rating. ConclusionsThere are a limited number of studies focusing on usability evaluations of eDS. The identified studies used expert-based and user-centered approaches, which can be used either individually or in combination to identify usability issues. However, further research is needed to determine the most appropriate evaluation method which can assess the fitness for purpose of discharge summaries.

Digital healthcare has rapidly evolved during and in the post-COVID pandemic era, expanding the roles and responsibilities of community pharmacists. Services like telepharmacy, e-prescriptions, remote medication therapy management, and digital monitoring of chronic conditions, have evolved into everyday routine pharmacy practices. Pharmacists are at the forefront and the most accessible healthcare professionals for patients and are increasingly pivotal in providing comprehensive patient care, including digital patient care services. To ensure that future generations of pharmacists are digitally competent, it is crucial that digital health education is provided to pharmacy students. Furthermore, fostering high-quality multidisciplinary research, particularly in collaboration with medicine and other health disciplines, is essential for advancing the digital health skills of the future pharmacy workforce. Despite the growing use of digital health technologies, there are significant between-country differences in digital health education, the clinical settings in which digital health technologies are used, and their implementation in day-to-day practice. This commentary summarizes key insights from the International Digital Health Workshop held at the University of Sydney in November 2023. To help ensure pharmacists are included as participants in future digital health research, recent advances in digital health education and interprofessional research projects across three universities from far-off world regions were presented. Participants discussed a possible collaborative, interprofessional, and international research project on chronic disease prevention using digital health technologies. The need for interdisciplinary digital health curricula was highlighted in the workshop discussions, specifically tailored to address the knowledge requirements of pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.

Background and Aim: Gastric carcinoma (GC) is one of the most common human cancers. Many genes have been analyzed in an attempt to better understand the process of gastric carcinogenesis, however, the underlying mechanism of gastric carcinogenesis is still poorly understood. Dermatopontin (DPT) is an extracellular matrix protein, which regulates multiple physiological processes. The present study aimed to evaluate DPT gene expression in GC. Materials and Methods: Biopsies of 50 surgically-excised GC tissue specimens and corresponding adjacent normal tissues were examined by real-time PCR. Then, using a bioinformatics analysis we determined DPT gene expression in two different cohorts of GC patients. To determine the effect of DPT expression levels on survival outcome, a Kaplan–Meier analysis was performed. For a comprehensive analysis, DPT gene expression was evaluated in 16 different cancers. Results: RT-PCR demonstrated that DPT gene expression was decreased in gastric cancer tissues, compared to that in the normal stomach tissues. Mean DPT expression value was significantly lower in different stages of GC. Further, survival analysis revealed that the mRNA expression of DPT is positively correlated with overall survival of GC patients. A relationship was found between DPT expression and primary size of tumor. Pan-cancer analysis in 16 tumor types showed that DPT expression was lower in tumor tissue than in the adjacent normal tissue. Conclusion: These findings suggested that the decrease in DPT gene expression in gastric tissue may play an important role in gastric carcinogenesis.

Extended Abstract Background: Fire is one of the most significant ecological elements that can alter the functioning of natural ecosystems, as well as one of the most significant natural disasters that endangers the ecosystem of forests. The intensity and frequency of forest fires are increasing daily due to the consequences of global climate change and population growth in sensitive areas. This factor not only damages individuals and property but also poses a serious risk to environmental preservation and the well-balanced ecological conditions of vegetation. Worldwide, thousands of fires in natural areas result in unquantifiable and unfathomable calamities each year. For many years, this problem has been the subject of investigation. The investigation of the fire that occurred in 2021, the conditions of its creation, and its effect on the soil and vegetation characteristics of the Qara Qeshlaq Lagoon are the most important goals of this research. Methods: An area of approximately four hectares of the Qara Gheshlagh Lagoon was burned twice on April 16, 2021, in two different time frames (hours) at 15:30 and 19:30. This area was chosen to investigate the effect of fire on the geological characteristics and vegetation of the wetland. Furthermore, a control area (unburned) was chosen to be close by, of the same size and at the appropriate distance from the burned region. The vegetation was sampled along a transect that ran along these regions. Given that the vegetation in both the burned and control areas is densely covered by Tamarix, 40 rectangular sample plots (a total of 80) with an approximate area of 10 m2 (5 ×2 m) and a distance of 20 m from each other were used to record the height, collar diameter, dbh, small and large diameters of the crown, the number of sprouts, and stem health traits. The percentage of grass cover was determined using a 1-m2 sample plot in the center of the sample plots. Additionally, five randomly selected sample plots were used from the center to measure the soil physicochemical characteristics, including its acidity, electrical conductivity, organic carbon, percentage of lime, percentages of clay, silt, and sand, and absorbable potassium and phosphorus. A soil sample was taken from a depth of 0-10 cm. After determining the normality of the data distribution with the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the Mann-Whitney and independent t-tests were used to compare the average quantitative characteristics of the vegetation cover and soil characteristics in the two burned and control areas. In addition, the principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized to explore the most essential fire-related elements in vegetation cover and soil. Results: At the 99% confidence level, the average collar diameter in the burned region was significantly higher at 4.41 cm than in the control area (3.17 cm). The average dbh (1.64 vs. 1.24 cm) and the number of sprouts (20.05 vs. 14.76) varied significantly in the burned and control areas, with a 95% confidence level. Additionally, a significant difference was observed between the average tree height (1.96 vs. 1.36 m), the percentage of grass cover (70.19 vs. 50.28%), and the stem health (all healthy stems versus all burnt stems) in the control and burned areas at the 99% confidence level. After about a year of the fire, there was a difference in pH characteristics (7.12 vs. 6.73) and sand (27.10 vs. 22.90%) in the two burned and control areas, with a significant difference at the 95% confidence level. A significant difference in the properties of organic carbon (2.86 vs. 1.71%), phosphorus (71.63 vs. 34.28 mg/kg), and potassium (921.40 vs 606.60 mg/kg) was seen in these two areas at the 99% confidence level. The PCA results revealed an effect of fire on the organic carbon, phosphorus, and available potassium parameters. Among the vegetation cover characteristics, the most effects belonged to the dbh, the collar diameter, tree height, and the large and small diameters of the crown with a factor load greater than 0.8. Conclusion: According to the current study, the quantitative features of the trees in the wetland were impacted in the burnt area, and changes occurred in vegetation and soil characteristics. As a result, all of the soil properties were significantly higher in the burned region than in the control area. Other than the collar diameter factor, other plant features in the burned region dropped dramatically. Thus, careful management and conservation of such areas following the fire is critical to restore the strength and potential of ecosystems to ensure the continuance of survival and sustainability. Therefore, it is advised to investigate the long-term impacts of fire on vegetation alterations and to accelerate the reconstruction process of the region by protecting such ecosystems and carrying out restoration operations.

Abstract The challenge of providing water, energy, and managing the environment is widely recognized as a significant barrier to global advancement in light of the increasing population. Based on projections, it is anticipated that the global community will encounter crises pertaining to water, energy and the environment in the foreseeable future. In this research, the application of the hybrid renewable system in a thermal power plant has been assessed based on the approach of analyzing the link between energy, water, and environment. The design of the solar system and the assessment of carbon balance during the power plant lifetime have been conducted in PVsyst application in 2022. Moreover, ReCipe environmental model has been used for assessing the effect of decrease in carbon emission on the ecosystem. The findings of the research indicate that the replacement of at least 2% of the nominal capacity of the fossil fuel power plant with the renewable one, prevents the emission of 1340.37 tons of carbon dioxide yearly. This amount equals to 371.25 m3 of reserve in fossil fuel consumption and 382.64 tons of crude oil. The results also showed that in addition to preserving natural resources, the hybrid cycle design leads to significant water demand reduction which equals to 3751 m3 with the capacity to supply underground water sources. Due to the interests of preserving water and energy resources and decreasing carbon emission in power plant industry, within the framework of nexus approach, management of energy supply by replacing resources and using water and heat recovery technologies and application of energy demand management policies based on energy efficiency and environmental implications is recommended.

Abstract Cancers of the kidney and renal pelvis are among the most prevalent types of urinary cancers. We aimed to outline the incidence trends of kidney and renal pelvis cancers by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and histology in the United States (US) from 2000 to 2020. The data was obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 22 database. The identification of patients with kidney and renal pelvis cancers with morphologies of renal cell carcinoma, nephroblastoma, sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumor was conducted utilizing the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology version 3. The average annual percent change (AAPC) were presented. All estimates were given in the form of counts and delayed age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) per 100,000 people. From 2000 to 2019, a total of 490,481 cases of kidney and renal pelvic cancer were recorded across all age groups in the US. The majority of them were among Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) (69.75%) and those aged 55–69 years (39.96%). The ASIRs per 100,000 for kidney and pelvis cancers were 22.03 for men and 11.14 for women. Non-Hispanic Black men had the highest ASIR (24.53 [24.24, 24.81]), and increase in ASIR over the 2000–2019 period (AAPC: 2.19% [1.84, 2.84]). There was a noticeable increase in incidence of kidney and renal pelvis cancers. Individuals aged 70–84 years had the highest ASIR for kidney and renal pelvis cancers. The COVID-19 era has resulted in a significant reduction in incidence rates across all demographics.

Crocus sativus L. was used for the treatment of a wide range of disorders in traditional medicine. Due to the extensive protective and treatment properties of C. sativus and its constituents in various diseases, the purpose of this review is to collect a summary of its effects, on experimental studies, both in vitro and in vivo. Databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus were explored until January 2023 by employing suitable keywords. Several investigations have indicated that the therapeutic properties of C. sativus may be due to its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on the nervous, cardiovascular, immune, and respiratory systems. Further research has shown that its petals also have anticonvulsant properties. Pharmacological studies have shown that crocetin and safranal have anti-oxidant properties and through inhibiting the release of free radicals lead to the prevention of disorders such as tumor cell proliferation, atherosclerosis, hepatotoxicity, bladder toxicity, and ethanol induced hippocampal disorders. Numerous studies have been performed on the effect of C. sativus and its constituents in laboratory animal models under in vitro and in vivo conditions on various disorders. This is necessary but not enough and more clinical trials are needed to investigate unknown aspects of the therapeutic properties of C. sativus and its main constituents in different disorders.

سابقه و هدف: در دوران همه‌گیری بیماری کرونا، استرس ابتلا به این بیماری می‌تواند بر بسیاری از جنبه‌های عملکرد فرد نظیر عملکرد شغلی تأثیرگذار باشد. ازاین‌رو ارتقا و بهره‌گیری از سرمایه‌های روان‌شناختی مانند بهزیستی روان‌شناختی و تاب‌آوری نقش مهمی در مقابله با شرایط استرس‌زا ایفا می‌کند. بر این اساس پژوهش حاضر با هدف بررسی تأثیر استرس ابتلا به کرونا بر جو اخلاقی و بهزیستی روان‌شناختی پرستاران بیمارستان شهید دکتر بهشتی اردستان با میانجی‌گری تاب‌آوری انجام شده است. روش کار: پژوهش حاضر از نوع توصیفی - همبستگی است. جامعۀ پژوهش تمامی پرستاران بیمارستان شهید دکتر بهشتی اردستان به تعداد 200 نفر بودند که 131 نفر از آنان به‌روش نمونه‌گیری دردسترس انتخاب شدند. ابزار گردآوری اطلاعات پرسش‌نامۀ ويژگي‌هاي جمعیت‌شناختی، پرسش‌نامۀ اضطراب کرونای علیپور و همکاران، پرسش‌نامۀ جو اخلاقی ویکتور و کالن، پرسش‌نامۀ بهزیستی روان‌شناختی ریف و پرسش‌نامۀ تاب‌آوری کانر و دیویدسون بود. برای تحلیل داده‌ها از آزمون همبستگی و معادلات ساختاری با استفاده از نرم‌افزار اسمارت پی‌ال‌اس استفاده شد. در این پژوهش همۀ موارد اخلاقی رعایت شده است و مؤلفان مقاله تضاد منافعی گزارش نکرده‌اند. یافته‌ها: نتایج پژوهش نشان داد که استرس ابتلا به کرونا بر جو اخلاقی، بهزیستی روان‌شناختی و تاب‌آوری تأثیر معکوس و معنی‌داری داشت. نتیجه‌گیری: پرستاران باید با هوشیاري و حفظ آرامش به خود اعتماد به نفس کافی بدهند تا بتوانند بدون تمرکز بر خطرات مربوط به حرفۀ خود، بر مشکلات غلبه کنند تا به‌تدریج از میزان استرس و فشارهاي روحی آنان کاسته شود.

This paper studies the fresh and mechanical properties of high-strength concrete (HSC) by incorporating recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) of varying sizes and concentrations. The recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) was prepared by partially replacing RCA with natural coarse aggregate (NCA) at 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45%, with aggregate sizes ranging from 5 to 12 and 12–20-mm. Fresh concrete properties, such as slump, Kelly ball, compacting factor, K-slump, and fresh density, were tested to determine the influence of RCA size and concentration. In addition, the mechanical properties were studied through the execution of compressive, split-tensile, and stress-strain tests. The test results revealed that increasing the RCA concentration declines the fresh and hardened properties of HSC. In the fresh concrete experimentation, the 12–20 mm aggregate size RAC mixes exhibited greater workability than the 5–12 mm aggregate mixes. On the contrary, 5–12 mm aggregate mixes RAC had higher compressive and split-tensile strength and a higher modulus of elasticity than 12–20 mm aggregate mixes concrete. When it comes to sustainability, the study found that the smaller size range of RAC produces inferior embodied CO2 (eCO2) and provides a cost-effective and sustainable solution for the construction industry.

Abstract Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is widespread and seriously threatens public health worldwide. This study aimed to investigate AFB1 in imported hazelnut samples in northwest of Iran (Eastern Azerbaijan Province) using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with a Fluorescent Detector (HPLC-FLD). In all tested samples AFB1 was detected. The mean concentration of AFB1 was 4.20 μg/kg and ranged from 3.145 to 8.13 μg/kg. All samples contained AFB1 levels within the maximum acceptable limit except for one sample. Furthermore, the human health risk assessment of AFB1 from consuming imported hazelnuts by Iranian children and adults was evaluated based on the margin of exposure (MoE) and quantitative liver cancer risk approaches. The MoE mean for children was 2529.76, while for adults, it was 8854.16, indicating a public health concern. The present study found that the risk of developing liver cancer among Iranian children was 0.11100736 per 100,000 people, and in the Iranian adult population was 0.0314496 cancers per 100,000 people. Since environmental conditions potentially affect aflatoxin levels in nuts, countries are advised to monitor aflatoxin contents in imported nuts, especially from countries with a conducive climate for mold growth.

Abstract The reduction of fossil energy sources, the harmful environmental effects caused by high energy consumption, and the increase in the share of energy consumption in the building sector have increased the need to pay attention to building energy consumption. This study offers an intricate examination of a residential locality in Florida, with a particular emphasis on the architectural design of a building, issues related to the local environment and several possibilities for enhancing energy efficiency. It examines the influence of the environment in the area on architectural design and investigates two different possibilities for improving energy efficiency. The first scenario focuses on assessing thermal insulation and shading, while the second scenario envisions utilizing photovoltaic cells to achieve a zero-energy building. The proposed initiatives seek to optimize energy efficiency, save expenses, and foster environmental sustainability in the region. In this research, the total energy consumption of a building with residential use in the climate of the case study was validated by DesignBuilder® simulation software, and the results obtained from the software. Then, using the standard of energy consumption of the building, various strategies for optimizing energy consumption have been simulated. Using energy simulation software, solutions for using external horizontal awnings and installing a thermal insulation sheet on the external wall of the building were investigated, which resulted in a reduction of 200 kWh of energy consumption compared to the normal state. Then, the building’s energy consumption intensity was calculated for each of the proposed solutions, and the building’s energy classification was determined with energy star and LEED standards.

Abstract Background Uterine smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) is a group of uterine smooth muscle tumors which cannot be classified as a subtype of leiomyoma or leiomyosarcoma. Diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of these tumors are challenging due to recurrence, potential of malignancy, and metastasis. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted in southern Iran during 2011 to 2020. We included records of 21 patients with STUMP and 24 patients with leiomyoma by simple randomized sampling in the tertiary health care centers in Shiraz, southern Iran. Slides were reviewed by an expert pathologist for examining mitosis, necrosis, and atypia, and also proper blocks were selected for immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. Results From 45 participants, 21 (46.7%) and 24 (53.3%) patients were in the STUMP and normal leiomyoma groups, respectively. Odds ratio and 95% confidence interval (OR (95% C.I)) of pathologic size in the range of 5–10 cm was significantly higher in the STUMP group compared with normal leiomyoma. (CI: 7.22 (1.44–36.22)). Additionally, hyaline necrosis 0.05 (0.0-0.91), mild to moderate atypia 0.02 (0.0-0.4), moderate to severe atypia 0.01 (0.0-0.22), focal atypia 0.01 (0-0.26) and diffuse atypia 0.01 (0-0.26) were significantly fewer in normal leiomyoma compared to the STUMP group. Negative P16 0.01 (0.0007-0.24) and negative Bcl2 0.22 (0.06–0.81) were significantly higher in the normal leiomyoma group compared with the STUMP group. The cut-off points for predicting STUMP were 2.5% (sensitivity = 62% and specificity = 100%) and 45% (sensitivity = 43% and specificity = 96%) for P16 and bcl2, respectively. Conclusion The category and management of STUMP continues to progress. The diagnosis for STUMP mainly depends on the histopathological manifestations. No single IHC marker such as P53, P16, and Bcl-2 has proved robust enough in separating STUMP from other leiomyoma variants; however, according to our study, we suggest combination use of P16 and Bcl-2 (cut off 2.5 and 45%, respectively) to distinguish equivocal cases of STUMP.

Background The long-term outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalisation in individuals with pre-existing airway diseases are unknown. Methods Adult participants hospitalised for confirmed or clinically suspected COVID-19 and discharged between 5 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 were recruited to the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 (PHOSP-COVID) study. Participants attended research visits at 5 months and 1 year post discharge. Clinical characteristics, perceived recovery, burden of symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with pre-existing airway disease (i.e., asthma, COPD or bronchiectasis) were compared to the non-airways group. Results A total of 615 out of 2697 (22.8%) participants had a history of pre-existing airway diseases (72.0% diagnosed with asthma, 22.9% COPD and 5.1% bronchiectasis). Background: Chronic Achilles tendinopathy following Haglund disease is a common ankle condition that is difficult to manage. In this study, we will compare the clinical outcomes of debridement and ostectomy with and without FHL tendon transfer in treating Haglund deformity. Methods: Forty eligible patients aged >50 years who did not respond to conservative treatment were randomly divided into 2 groups for surgical approach: using flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon transfer (FHL group) or “standard procedure” (control group). The main surgical treatment included debridement and ostectomy. AOFAS and VISA-A scores were obtained from all patients pre- and postoperatively. Results: Twenty patients were assigned to each of the 2 groups and were observed for at least 1 year. The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle hindfoot scores and the Victorian Institute of Sports Assessment self-administered Achilles (VISA-A) questionnaires scores improved more in the FHL group; however, the average difference in the change in scores did not reach the levels previously reported for minimal clinically important differences. Surgical complications and hallux function were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Conclusion: We found that FHL tendon transfer may improve the clinical outcome scores of Achilles tendon treatment in patients aged >50 years using debridement and ostectomy. However, tendon transfer increases the time of surgery and creates additional skin incisions, which may cause more short-term wound complications, and the significance of the differences in outcome improvement may not be clinically meaningful. This paper presents critiques on the water–energy–food-environment nexus (WEFEN).Furthermore, this study analyses current innovations on the WEFEN nexus concept, applications, and impacts during the period of 2015–2023. Additionally, it aims to address the challenges and imperatives of investigating this nexus within the context of the world. This review critically analyzes the existing body of research pertaining to the interplay between water, energy, food, and the environment. Additionally, it highlights the challenges encountered in studying this intricate relationship and underscores the imperative for further investigation in this domain. This study reveals that the main barriers to achieving global integration of WEFEN are sector-specific policies and a dearth of integrated management approaches. Also named as big problems were the lack of money for projects that integrate WEFEN, the lack of information sources, and the lack of laws that cover the development of the WEFEN nexus as a whole. The findings of this study encompass recommendations for enhancing the interplay between WEFEN. These measures encompass enhancing collaboration and coordination among various entities, including governmental ministries, councils, universities, associations, and businesses. Additionally, establishing a dedicated policy-making institution and reaching a consensus on a comprehensive plan are crucial steps. By employing effective management strategies and formulating appropriate policies, the research and discoveries presented in this review article possess the potential to address the anticipated challenges that lie ahead for the global community.

The current investigation focuses on analyzing dynamic approaches to sustainable water resource management policies, considering the interconnectedness of water, food and energy resources. This analysis takes into consideration changes in demand resulting from population growth and economic development over a twenty-year timeframe, employing a systems dynamics methodology. Initially, the model was developed and simulated using data from the case province as a macro-scale representation of the water-food-energy resource framework, while also factoring in the continuation of current conditions. Through sensitivity analysis utilizing the Monte Carlo model, the study addresses the formulation of sustainable water resource policies across four main categories: water demand management, water supply management, food resource management, and energy resource demand management. Additionally, it explores the integration of policies within an optimal framework. The simulation of proposed solutions revealed that a combination of water demand management and food resource management yielded the most promising outcome. Specifically, the recommended solution entails enhancing water irrigation efficiency by 17 % through the expansion of pressurized irrigation network coverage, adjusting cropping patterns by 12 %, reducing agricultural product losses by 7 % via improved food supply management, minimizing food demand by 7 % due to reduced food consumption losses, and achieving an annual 8 % increase in crop performance. These selected policies form the foundation for sustainable water resource management strategies.

The transmission of signal values in self-sensing concrete allows us to precisely locate damaged structures and prevent disasters. Currently, there are over ten functional materials used in self-sensing concrete applications. Carbon fibre (CF) is a well-known functional material that has been extensively studied for its reproducibility and accuracy in self-sensing concrete experiments. In contrast, this study is based on finite element modelling to rapidly predict the impact of the functional filler material, CF, on concrete performance. This paper simulates the mechanical and piezoresistive properties of concrete with unsized and desized short-cut CFs at lengths of 3, 6, and 12 mm. Four different weight ratios were considered for each type of CF. The results indicate that the inclusion of CF increases compressive strength by approximately 2 MPa, while flexural strength can increase by up to 39%, with the unsized 6 mm fibres performing best at a concentration of 0.7 wt%. In the piezoresistive model, the higher fractional change in resistivity between 0 and 2 MPa is attributed to the formation of a conductive circuit. The predicted trends in mechanical strength and resistance variation align well with experimental observations. Therefore, this proposed model holds the potential to aid in the development of design strategies aimed at fine-tuning the microstructure of these self-sensitive materials to enhance performance and facilitate the design and application of carbon fibres in cementitious composites.

The basic and key point in the realization of sustainable development is to obtain affordable, reliable, and clean sources of energy. In other words, energy has a fundamental importance in the realization of a sustainable economy, so researchers consider energy as the blood flowing in the veins of modern society. Despite this fundamental importance, the sustainable supply of energy in the world is still facing wide challenges. In recent years, despite the many capacities of fossil and renewable energy, Iran has faced many fundamental challenges in the field of energy. According to what has been said, the realization of sustainable development without overcoming the challenges of sustainable energy supply is out of mind. On the other hand, it is not possible to overcome the challenges of the energy field without innovation and continuous improvements as drivers of change. It is noteworthy that innovation without using an innovation strategy will be fruitless. The reason for this is that the process of innovation is risky and requires difficult decisions. Therefore, the use of an innovation strategy is necessary to create improvements and changes in the system. Therefore, the proposed research is focused on the concept of innovation strategy. The current research was conducted to analyze the content of the documents of the laws of the development program of Iran from the perspective of exploring sustainable development and innovation strategy in the energy industry. This issue is important because the formulation and support of sustainable development policies can be an important issue in achieving sustainable development. On the other hand, the formulation of innovation policies can be the basis for its realization. This research has used the qualitative method to create a deep understanding of the research concepts. This happens while previous researchers have mostly benefited little from qualitative methods in studying the concept of innovation strategy. On the other hand, the current research has studied the innovation strategy with the goal of sustainable development. The alignment of innovation with sustainable development is an important matter that has been less considered in previous studies. Thus, by examining these deficiencies, the proposed research can complement the gaps of previous research in this field in several ways. The importance of this research is in understanding the background conditions of Iran's energy industry. This can facilitate the paths of achieving sustainable development in the energy industry, improving efficiency and economic stability, improving justice and social inclusiveness, and preserving biodiversity and natural resources. Also, the proposed research through the policy recommendations provided can provide an important tool for company managers, policymakers, or in general decision makers of the energy industry in Iran. The current research is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in terms of nature. In terms of strategy, this research has used the library strategy. The current research has used the summary content analysis method to analyze the collected data and the inductive-deductive coding approach to reduce and categorize the data. The content analysis in this research was of a quantitative relationship with neighborhood analysis. To perform the coding process, MaxQDA version 20 software was used. The statistical population of the research was the documents of the laws of the development program of Iran. The current research has studied the entire statistical population. Therefore, sampling was not required. The implementation process of the current research started with theoretical studies and analysis of previous research related to the strategy of innovation and sustainable development. This was done to deepen the theoretical knowledge about the studied concepts and also to identify and define the research concepts and categories. In the next step, the research questions were formulated. The next stage of the current research is devoted to the review of the documents and documents of the development program laws. After this, the collected qualitative data was analyzed. In the last stage, summarization and conclusions were made and research proposals were presented. In this research, to ensure the validity and reliability of the research findings, the validity and reliability of the data were examined. For this purpose, data coding was done carefully and in several stages with time intervals. Also, some experts with experience and expertise in the field of energy and sustainable development re-examined the research results. To be more sure of the reliability of the research findings, the calculation of agreement between two coders or reliability between two coders has also been used. The findings of the research show that the writing and formulation of development plans in Iran have been mainly centered around economic growth. In other words, concepts related to social inclusiveness and environmental protection have been neglected in Iran's development plans. The evidence shows that Iran's development plans have paid significant attention to fossil energies as opposed to renewable energies. In addition to environmental hazards, this can be a serious threat to energy security in Iran. The findings show that despite the relatively high attention of Iran's development plans to the concept of technology, the concept of innovation has not been given much attention. In addition, the emphasis on technological innovation can cause neglect the benefits of non-technological innovations. Following the path of the current research, it is suggested that future researchers use quantitative methods to investigate the impact of innovation strategies on sustainable development in the energy industry. In addition, the realization of the country's development plans can be examined with quantitative methods.

It is important that radioactive and nuclear wastes are immobilized in a glass composition with lower melting temperatures due to their economy. In this study, the elastic and mechanical properties of sodium borate-based vitrified radioactive waste were measured using ultrasonic techniques. Many ultrasonic parameters, such as elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, and microhardness, were calculated by measuring the ultrasonic velocities of the glasses. The ultrasonic velocity data, the density, the calculated elastic moduli, micro-hardness, softening temperature, and Debye temperature depending on the glass composition were evaluated, and the relation with the structure was clarified. It was observed that the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio increased as the Cs2O content increased in glasses containing Cs waste. This result shows that the rigidity of the network structure of these glasses increases in contrast to the glass containing Sr.

Objective(s): Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. MiRNAs modulate the PI3K/AKT/mTOR (PAM) pathway, functioning as either tumor suppressors or oncogenes. This research explores the impact of AgNPs on breast cancer cells while emphasizing the interplay between miR-133a and the PAM pathway and uncovering regulatory mechanisms.Materials and Methods: To assess the impact of AgNPs on cell growth and survival, we performed an MTT assay. Additionally, we employed bioinformatic methodologies to predict potential targets of miR-133a within the PAM pathway. We quantified the expression levels of miR-133a, PI3K, AKT, PTEN, and mTOR in MCF-7 cells after exposure to AgNPs using qRT-PCR. Furthermore, we employed Western blotting to evaluate the protein expression of mTOR.Results: The MTT assay results demonstrated a significant dose- and time-dependent inhibition of breast cancer cells by AgNPs. The qRT-PCR analysis revealed an upregulation in the mRNA expression levels of PI3K and AKT, accompanied by a downregulation in the mRNA expression levels of PTEN and mTOR upon exposure to AgNPs. However, the efficacy and expression level of miR-133a as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer cells remained unchanged following exposure to AgNPs (IC50).Conclusion: The study found that AgNPs inhibit breast cancer cell growth, affecting the PAM pathway, but miR-133a remained unchanged, suggesting AgNPs may not primarily act through miR-133a. Further research is needed, but caution is advised when using AgNPs for cancer control and treatment.

Background: Considering the importance of academic performance during adolescence, one of the most important variables in this regard is Goal orientation. Based on the etiology of students' low academic performance, there are several interventions to be effective on psychological well-being; However, no study has investigated the impact of cognitive, metacognitive, and emotional regulation strategies on goal orietation. Aims: The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of teaching cognitive, metacognitive and emotion regulation strategies on the goal orientation of male students with low academic performance in the second year of high school. Methods: This research was semi-experimental research with a pre-test-post-test design and a control group in terms of implementation. The statistical population consisted of all male students with low academic performance in the second year of high school in Tabriz city in 1400-1401. To select the research sample, 15 people were selected for each group in the form of purposeful sampling and randomly assigned to three experimental groups and one control group (60 people). Achieving climate change targets requires a massive reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. According to the Paris agreement, this amount should be reached to 30 Gt/year CO2 reduction. Among different energy and environmental technologies, CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies are promising technologies to achieve those goals. Despite different technical, economical, and environmental CCS challenges, process development based on recent advances can significantly facilitate the CCS’s deployment. This study aims to simulate the absorption system of CO2 with Methyl-Diethanolamine (MDEA) and Piperazine (PZ) absorbents. In this study, three different scenarios have been considered for designing the parts of the absorption tower and air blower that have the highest energy consumption to achieve the highest amount of absorption, purity, and CO2 recovery. Compared results from the defined scenarios show that the use of an intercooler in the middle of the adsorption tower (Scenario 3) is the best design for the CO2 capture simulated process where the adsorption rate is 90.1%, the purity is 82.26 (mol%) and CO2 Recovered reaches 28.74 ton/hr. Since energy consumption in high CO2 absorption rate and purity is one of the main challenges of such technologies, this study also evaluates the combination of the organic Rankin cycle (ORC) with air blowers by three refrigerants R290, R227, and R124 to reduce energy in the carbon capture units. The results show that in this cycle, R290 has the highest power output against R227 and R124 refrigerants under the same conditions. Combining ORC with an air blower reduces the cooling load of the whole process to 104.85 MW and the total power consumption to 46.375 MW. Finally, this study concludes that using different designs and combinations, including ORC cycles in high-energy CCS processes, can also reduce the cost of energy required, and its deployment can help prevent climate change.

Besat is a natural gas-fired steam-turbine power plant in Tehran, Iran’s only power station equipped with a monoethanolamine-based post-combustion CO2 capture unit (PCCU). The PCCU operates at a low recovery rate of 4.7% and produces 58 t-CO2/day. Captured CO2 is encapsulated and sold to beverage companies for carbonated soft drink production. Before developing this CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) route, a beverage company like ZamZam produced CO2 on-site, capturing CO2 from flue gas of diesel-fired boilers using a 95%-efficient absorption-refrigeration unit. This paper conducts an attributional, comparative life-cycle assessment/costing of applying the CCU technology to supply the beverage industry with CO2. ReCiPe, cumulative energy demand, and AWARE impact assessment methods are adopted to assess changes in the life-cycle economic, energy, and environmental impacts of electricity, liquid CO2, and carbonated water supply chains with the CCU route. As per findings, the CCU route significantly improves the sustainability profile of liquid CO2 supply for carbonated water production. Compared to on-site production, the CCU route reduces the average economic, energy, and environmental impacts of liquid CO2 supply by 55, 44, and 62%, respectively. However, the figures for carbonated-water production are reduced by only 10.1, 0.85, and 0.77%, respectively, since associated impacts primarily result from citric acid and polyethylene terephthalate value chains rather than liquid CO2. The CCU route, in comparison, increases most environmental burdens of electricity generation. With an efficiency of 4.7%, the PCCU reduces the global warming potential of electricity generation by 6.22% while increasing average toxicity- and eutrophication-related impacts by 55 and 30%, respectively, and production costs by 8%.

A shortcut to an adiabatic scheme is proposed for preparing a massive object in a macroscopic spatial superposition state. In this scheme we propose to employ counterdiabatic driving to maintain the system in the ground state of its instantaneous Hamiltonian while the trap potential is tuned from a parabola to a double well. This, in turn, is performed by properly ramping a control parameter. We show that a few counterdiabatic drives are enough for most practical cases. A hybrid electromechanical setup in superconducting circuits is proposed for the implementation. The efficiency of our scheme is benchmarked by numerically solving the system dynamics in the presence of noises and imperfections. The results show that a mechanical resonator with very-high-fidelity spatially distinguishable cat states can be prepared with our protocol. Furthermore, the protocol is robust against noises and imperfections. We also discuss a method for verifying the final state via spectroscopy of a coupled circuit electrodynamical cavity mode. Our work can serve as the ground work to feasibly realize and verify macroscopic superposition states in future experiments.

سابقه و هدف: كيفيت زندگي شغلي نقش مهمی در رفتار و مهارت کارکنان دارد و بر واکنش­های آنان تأثیرگذار است. پژوهش حاضر با هدف بررسی نقش بهزیستی معنوی و سواد سلامت در کیفیت زندگی کارکنان دانشگاه علوم پزشکی اصفهان انجام شد. روش کار: این پژوهش از نظر هدف کاربردي و روش آن توصيفي و از نوع همبستگي است. جامعۀ آماري پژوهش کارکنان دانشکده­های دانشگاه علوم پزشکی اصفهان بود که در زمان تحقیق تعداد 150 نفر بودند. شیوۀ نمونه­گیری در این پژوهش به‌صورت تصادفی ساده و حجم نمونه با استفاده از جدول کرجسي و مورگان 108 نفر تخمین زده شد. 120 پرسش‌نامه در میان جامعۀ آماری توزیع شد که از این تعداد 108 پرسش‌نامه تکمیل گردید. ابزار اندازه­گیری پرسش‌نامه‌های استاندارد بهزیستی معنوی پالوتزين و اليسون، سواد سلامت منتظری و همکاران و کیفیت زندگی کارکنان مدل والتون بود. به‌منظور بررسی فرضیات از معادلات ساختاری استفاده شد. در این پژوهش همۀ موارد اخلاقی رعایت شده است و مؤلفان مقاله تضاد منافعی گزارش نکرده‌اند. یافته‌ها: نتایج پژوهش نشان داد که بهزیستی معنوی با ضریب مسیر 171/0 و سواد سلامت با ضریب مسیر 84/0 بر کیفیت زندگی کارکنان تأثیر معنی­داری داشت. نتیجه‌گیری: مدیران دانشگاه‌های علوم پزشکی و سازمان‌های مرتبط با بهداشت و درمان در دوران سخت کرونا باید بکوشند تا با ارتقای سواد سلامت در کارکنان و جامعه، محیطی توأم با آرامش و به‌زیست برای منابع انسانی خود فراهم نمایند.

Background Pre-existing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cardiovascular risk factors have been associated with an increased risk of complications following hospitalisation with COVID-19, but their impact on the rate of recovery following discharge is not known.Objectives To determine whether the rate of patient-perceived recovery following hospitalisation with COVID-19 was affected by the presence of CVD or cardiovascular risk factors.Methods In a multicentre prospective cohort study, patients were recruited following discharge from the hospital with COVID-19 undertaking two comprehensive assessments at 5 months and 12 months. Patients were stratified by the presence of either CVD or cardiovascular risk factors prior to hospitalisation with COVID-19 and compared with controls with neither. Full recovery was determined by the response to a patient-perceived evaluation of full recovery from COVID-19 in the context of physical, physiological and cognitive determinants of health.Results From a total population of 2545 patients (38.8% women), 472 (18.5%) and 1355 (53.2%) had CVD or cardiovascular risk factors, respectively. Compared with controls (n=718), patients with CVD and cardiovascular risk factors were older and more likely to have had severe COVID-19. Full recovery was significantly lower at 12 months in patients with CVD (adjusted OR (aOR) 0.62, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.89) and cardiovascular risk factors (aOR 0.66, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.86).Conclusion Patients with CVD or cardiovascular risk factors had a delayed recovery at 12 months following hospitalisation with COVID-19. Targeted interventions to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in patients with cardiovascular disease remain an unmet need.Trail registration number ISRCTN10980107.

The population increase and the demand for water and energy, accompanied by the implications of environment pollution for natural and human resources, indicate the critical necessity for a coherent movement towards nexus between water, energy, and environment. Due to the fact that power generation industry is responsible for a significant proportion of water and fuel consumption and Carbon dioxide emissions within the world, in this research, the application of the hybrid renewable system in a thermal power plant has been assessed based on the approach of analyzing the link between energy, water and environment. The design of the solar system and the assessment of carbon balance during the power plant lifetime have been conducted in PVsyst application in 2022. Moreover, ReCipe environmental model has been used for assessing the effect of decrease in carbon emission on the ecosystem. The findings of the research indicate that the replacement of at least 2 % of the nominal capacity of the fossil fuel power plant with the renewable one, prevents the emission of 1431.28 tons of carbon dioxide yearly. This amount equals to 380.34 cubic meters of reserve in fossil fuel consumption and 391.73 tons of crude oil. The results also showed that in addition to preserving natural resources, the hybrid cycle design leads to significant water demand reduction which equals to 3842 cubic meters with the capacity to supply underground water sources. Due to the interests of preserving water and energy resources and decreasing carbon emission in power plant industry, within the framework of nexus approach, management of energy supply by replacing resources and using water and heat recovery technologies and application of energy demand management policies based on energy efficiency and environmental implications is recommended.
