Abstract Tracheal pooling for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae (M. hyopneumoniae) DNA detection allows for decreased diagnostic cost, one of the main constraints in surveillance programs. The objectives of this study were to estimate the sensitivity of pooled-sample testing for the detection of M. hyopneumoniae in tracheal samples and to develop probability of M. hyopneumoniae detection estimates for tracheal samples pooled by 3, 5, and 10. A total of 48 M. hyopneumoniae PCR-positive field samples were pooled 3-, 5-, and 10-times using field M. hyopneumoniae DNA-negative samples and tested in triplicate. The sensitivity was estimated at 0.96 (95% credible interval [Cred. Int.]: 0.93, 0.98) for pools of 3, 0.95 (95% Cred. Int: 0.92, 0.98) for pools of 5, and 0.93 (95% Cred. When developing JavaScript (JS) applications, the assessment and selection of JS packages becomes challenging for developers due to the growing number of technology options available. Given a technology-related task, a common developers’ strategy is to query Web repositories (e.g., from GitHub) via a search engine (e.g., NPM, Google) and then shortlist candidate JS packages. However, this search might return a long list of results and not all of them might be relevant. Thus, these results often need to be (re-)ordered according to the developer’s criteria. To address these problems, in prior work, we developed a recommender system called AIDT that assists developers in the package selection task. AIDT relies on meta-search and machine learning techniques to infer the relevant packages for a query. An initial evaluation of AIDT showed good search effectiveness, but the tool was unable to explain its choices to the developer. Research on Large Language Models (LLMs) has recently opened new opportunities for this kind of recommender systems. Anyway, human developers should judge whether the recommendations (e.g., JS packages) of these tools (either AIDT or LLMs) are fit to purpose. In this paper, we propose a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture for using LLMs in the domain of technology selection, which enhances the AIDT original design. Furthermore, we report on a user study using both AIDT and different LLM-based variants (ChatGPT, Cohere, Llama2) on a sample of JS-related queries, in which we compared their results and also validated them against developers’ criteria for the task. Our findings show that, although the ranking capabilities of LLMs are not yet on par with AIDT or human efforts, the RAG architecture can achieve a decent performance and is good at providing explanations for the package choices in the rankings. The latter feature makes it more transparent than AIDT and, thus, potentially more flexible to support developers’ tasks.

Biocompatible ceramic scaffolds offer a promising approach to address the challenges in bone reconstruction. Wollastonite, well-known for its exceptional biocompatibility, has attracted significant attention in orthopedics and craniofacial fields. However, the antimicrobial properties of wollastonite have contradictory findings, necessitating further research to enhance its antibacterial characteristics. This study aimed to explore a new approach to improve in vitro biological response in terms of antimicrobial activity and cell proliferation by taking advantage of additive manufacturing for the development of scaffolds with complex geometries by 3D printing using propolis-modified wollastonite. The scaffolds were designed with a TPMS (Triply Periodic Minimal Surface) gyroid geometric shape and 3D printed prior to impregnation with propolis extract. The paste formulation was characterized by rheometric measurements, and the presence of propolis was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The scaffolds were comprehensively assessed for their mechanical strength. The biological characterization involved evaluating the antimicrobial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, employing Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), Zone of Inhibition (ZOI), and biofilm formation assays. Additionally, SaOs-2 cultures were used to study cell proliferation (Alamar blue assay), and potential osteogenic was tested (von Kossa, Alizarin Red, and ALP stainings) at different time points. Propolis impregnation did not compromise the mechanical properties of the scaffolds, which exhibited values comparable to human trabecular bone. Propolis incorporation conferred antibacterial activity against both Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The implementation of TPMS gyroid geometry in the scaffold design demonstrated favorable cell proliferation with increased metabolic activity and osteogenic potential after 21 days of cell cultures.

Seven novel porcine parvoviruses (nPPVs) (PPV2 through PPV8) have been described, although their pathogenicity and possible effects on porcine reproductive failure (PRF) are undefined. In this study, these nPPVs were assessed in gilts from Colombia; their coinfections with PPV1, PCV2, PCV3, PCV4, and PRRSV and an association between the nPPVs and the reproductive performance parameters (RPPs) in sows were determined. For this, 234 serum samples were collected from healthy gilts from 40 herds in five Colombian regions, and the viruses were detected via real-time PCR. The results confirmed the circulation of PPV2 through PPV7 in Colombia, with PPV3 (40%), PPV5 (20%), and PPV6 (17%) being the most frequent. Additionally, no PCV4 or PPV8 was detected. PPV2 to PPV7 were detected in concurrence with each other and with the primary PRF viruses, and these coinfections varied from double to sextuple coinfections. Additionally, the association between nPPVs and PRF primary viruses was statistically significant for the presence of PPV6 in PCV3-positive (p < 0.01) and PPV5 in PPRSV-positive (p < 0.05) gilts; conversely, there was a significant presence of PPV3 in both PCV2-negative (p < 0.01) and PRRSV-negative (p < 0.05) gilts. Regarding the RPPs, the crude association between virus detection (positive or negative) and a high or low RPP was only statistically significant for PCV3 and the farrowing rate (FR), indicating that the crude odds of a low FR were 94% lower in herds with PCV3-positive gilts. This finding means that the detection of PCV3 in gilts (PCV3-positive by PCR) is associated with a higher FR in the farm or that these farms (with positive gilts) have lower odds (OR 0.06, p-value 0.0043) of a low FR. Additionally, a low FR tended to be associated with the detection of PPV4 and PPV5 (p-value < 0.20). This study is important for establishing the possible participation of nPPVs in PRF.

The genetic diversity of influenza A viruses circulating in swine in Mexico complicates control efforts in animals and presents a threat to humans, as shown by influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus. To describe evolution of swine influenza A viruses in Mexico and evaluate strains for vaccine development, we sequenced the genomes of 59 viruses and performed antigenic cartography on strains from 5 regions. We found that genetic and antigenic diversity were particularly high in southeast Mexico because of repeated introductions of viruses from humans and swine in other regions in Mexico. We identified novel reassortant H3N2 viruses with genome segments derived from 2 different viruses that were independently introduced from humans into swine: pandemic H1N1 viruses and seasonal H3N2 viruses. The Mexico swine viruses are antigenically distinct from US swine lineages. Protection against these viruses is unlikely to be afforded by US virus vaccines and would require development of new vaccines specifically targeting these diverse strains.

Abstract Background Most current algorithms for automatic glaucoma assessment using fundus images rely on handcrafted features based on segmentation, which are affected by the performance of the chosen segmentation method and the extracted features. Among other characteristics, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are known because of their ability to learn highly discriminative features from raw pixel intensities. Methods In this paper, we employed five different ImageNet-trained models (VGG16, VGG19, InceptionV3, ResNet50 and Xception) for automatic glaucoma assessment using fundus images. Results from an extensive validation using cross-validation and cross-testing strategies were compared with previous works in the literature. Results Using five public databases (1707 images), an average AUC of 0.9605 with a 95% confidence interval of 95.92–97.07%, an average specificity of 0.8580 and an average sensitivity of 0.9346 were obtained after using the Xception architecture, significantly improving the performance of other state-of-the-art works. Moreover, a new clinical database, ACRIMA, has been made publicly available, containing 705 labelled images. It is composed of 396 glaucomatous images and 309 normal images, which means, the largest public database for glaucoma diagnosis. The high specificity and sensitivity obtained from the proposed approach are supported by an extensive validation using not only the cross-validation strategy but also the cross-testing validation on, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, all publicly available glaucoma-labelled databases. Conclusions These results suggest that using ImageNet-trained models is a robust alternative for automatic glaucoma screening system. All images, CNN weights and software used to fine-tune and test the five CNNs are publicly available, which could be used as a testbed for further comparisons.

Innovative hip implants should be designed in accordance with biomechanical models of the proximal femur and take into account both body weight and muscle action in order to improve usability and biomimetic performance. This article proposes a finite element analysis of the proximal femur using both cortical and trabecular regions and employing transverse isotropic properties with standardized loads taken from active and young patients. Maximum principal stresses are plotted to show the mechanical behavior of the femur and grouped to evaluate stress shielding. Tsai–Wu and the maximum principal stress fields are useful for finding the areas more prone to failure and analyzing the influence of the stems on femoral mechanics. Other parameters, such as the stem material, absence of neck and osteotomy level, are explained. This paper is expected to provide a guide for designers and surgeons of femoral stems for assessing qualitatively and quantitatively the risks of stress shielding.

This paper presents the complete development and experimental validation of a microsystem designed to systematically assess the impact of surface topography on cell adhesion and dynamics. The microsystem includes two pools for culturing cells and for including chemicals. These pools are connected by several channels that have different microtextures, along which the cells crawl from one well to another. The impact of channel surface topography on cell performance, as well as the influence of other relevant factors, can therefore be assessed. The microsystem stands out for its being able to precisely define the surface topographies from the design stage and also has the advantage of including the different textures under study in a single device. Validation has been carried out by culturing human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) on the microsystem pre-treated with a coating of hMSC conditioned medium (CM) produced by these cells. The impact of surface topography on cell adhesion, motility, and velocity has been quantified, and the relevance of using a coating of hMSC-CM for these kinds of studies has been analyzed. Main results, current challenges, and future proposals based on the use of the proposed microsystem as an experimental resource for studying cell mechanobiology are also presented.

Avian influenza or bird flu is a highly contagious acute viral disease that can occur in epidemics and cross-border forms in poultry and wild birds. The characteristics of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) allow the emergence of new viral variants, some with zoonotic and pandemic potential. AIVs have been identified in Latin America; however, there is a lack of understanding of these viruses at the regional level. We performed a systematic literature review on serological or molecular evidence of AIVs circulation in Latin America. Methods were designed based on the PRISMA and STROME guidelines. Only peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 to 2015 and data was analysed based on country, viral subtype, avian species, and phylogenetic origins. From 271 studies initially found only twenty-six met our inclusion criteria. Evidence of AIVs infection was found in most Latin American countries, with Mexico as the country with the largest number of conducted studies and reported cases during the period analysed, followed by Chile and Argentina. Most of the AIVs were early reported through surveillance systems and at least 14 different subtypes of influenza viruses were reported in birds, and the presence of both low (92.9%) and high (7.1%) pathogenic AIVs was shown in Latin America. Of the reported AIVs in Latin America, 43.7% belong to migratory birds, 28.1% to local wild birds, and 28.1% to poultry. The migratory bird population mainly comprises families belonging to the orders Anseriformes and Charadriformes. We highlight the importance of epidemiological surveillance systems and the possible role of different migratory birds in the transmission of AIVs within the Americas. Our findings demonstrate the limited information on AIVs in Latin America and highlight the need of more studies on AIVs at the regional level, particularly those focused on identifying the endemic subtypes in regional wild birds.

El propósito central de este escrito es argumentar en favor de las formas de vivir ociosas basadas en ejercicios prácticos de ociosidad. Para ello, se contempla en primera instancia la antropología filosófica de Peter Sloterdijk, según la cual el hombre se produce a sí mismo viviendo su vida en distintas formas de ejercicio. En seguida, el texto contrasta esta tesis con los planteamientos de Michel Foucault respecto a la vida como obra de arte. Se finaliza estableciendo la tesis de que ser ocioso no significa simplemente no-hacer-nada, en cuanto que se trata de una actitud vital absolutamente virtuosa, generosa y creativa que se adquiere conforme a un cuidadoso ejercicio de la libertad y la espontaneidad.

Rotaviruses (RV) are important causes of diarrhea in animals, especially in domestic animals. Of the 9 RV species, rotavirus A, B, and C (RVA, RVB, and RVC, respectively) had been established as important causes of diarrhea in pigs. The Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory receives swine stool samples from North America to determine the etiologic agents of disease. Between November 2009 and October 2011, 7,508 samples from pigs with diarrhea were submitted to determine if enteric pathogens, including RV, were present in the samples. All samples were tested for RVA, RVB, and RVC by real time RT-PCR. The majority of the samples (82%) were positive for RVA, RVB, and/or RVC. To better understand the risk factors associated with RV infections in swine diagnostic samples, three-level mixed-effects logistic regression models (3L-MLMs) were used to estimate associations among RV species, age, and geographical variability within the major swine production regions in North America. The conditional odds ratios (cORs) for RVA and RVB detection were lower for 1-3 day old pigs when compared to any other age group. However, the cOR of RVC detection in 1-3 day old pigs was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than pigs in the 4-20 days old and >55 day old age groups. Furthermore, pigs in the 21-55 day old age group had statistically higher cORs of RV co-detection compared to 1-3 day old pigs (p < 0.001). The 3L-MLMs indicated that RV status was more similar within states than among states or within each region. Our results indicated that 3L-MLMs are a powerful and adaptable tool to handle and analyze large-hierarchical datasets. In addition, our results indicated that, overall, swine RV epidemiology is complex, and RV species are associated with different age groups and vary by regions in North America.

Intraoral devices for bite-force sensing have several applications in odontology and maxillofacial surgery, as bite-force measurements provide additional information to help understand the characteristics of bruxism disorders and can also be of help for the evaluation of post-surgical evolution and for comparison of alternative treatments. A new system for measuring human bite forces is proposed in this work. This system has future applications for the monitoring of bruxism events and as a complement for its conventional diagnosis. Bruxism is a pathology consisting of grinding or tight clenching of the upper and lower teeth, which leads to several problems such as lesions to the teeth, headaches, orofacial pain and important disorders of the temporomandibular joint. The prototype uses a magnetic field communication scheme similar to low-frequency radio frequency identification (RFID) technology (NFC). The reader generates a low-frequency magnetic field that is used as the information carrier and powers the sensor. The system is notable because it uses an intra-mouth passive sensor and an external interrogator, which remotely records and processes information regarding a patient’s dental activity. This permits a quantitative assessment of bite-force, without requiring intra-mouth batteries, and can provide supplementary information to polysomnographic recordings, current most adequate early diagnostic method, so as to initiate corrective actions before irreversible dental wear appears. In addition to describing the system’s operational principles and the manufacture of personalized prototypes, this report will also demonstrate the feasibility of the system and results from the first in vitro and in vivo trials.

En este escrito se expondrán algunos rasgos característicos de la lógica institucional de los frenos y contrapesos en Colombia, a partir de la interacción que se presenta entre los ámbitos representativos y los ámbitos jurisdiccionales del poder Estatal, en razón de la actuación del control judicial de constitucionalidad y de la reforma constitucional en sede legislativa. Se argumentará que la lógica de esa interacción, aunque puede optimizar la acción de controles más o menos efectivos para evitar el decisionismo, lo hace a costa de limitar la eficacia de otros principios también valiosos para el sistema constitucional, como la legitimidad democrática y la colaboración armónica. Con base en ello, se sugerirá que una revisión crítica de algunas de las normas de distribución de competencia entre los órganos del poder público podría arrojar argumentos relevantes para la discusión sobre procedimientos de decisión más democráticos, en clave deliberativa.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are distributed worldwide in birds, pigs and humans, and cause important endemic disease affecting hosts in all countries. Although pigs play a key role in the ecology of IAVs, the epidemiology of IAVs within swine herds is poorly understood. In this longitudinal study we describe the prevalence of IAVs infection in three subpopulations of pigs in 5 breeding herds in the Midwestern USA. Each herd was sampled monthly for a year and, at each visit, 30 individual nasal swabs were collected from the three subpopulations, namely, a) replacement females, resident on-farm for less than 4 weeks (new gilts), b) replacement females, resident on-farm for more than 4 weeks (gilts), and c) neonatal pigs less than 21 days of age (piglets). Real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR) was used to detect IAVs, and the association between IAVs infection and pig subpopulation was measured using a mixed logistic regression model. Nasal swabs (n = 4,190) were collected from 141 groups of pigs. At least, one IAV-positive nasal swab was found in 19.9% (n = 28) of the sampled groups, and 7.7% (n = 324) of all nasal swabs tested positive. After adjusting by annual quarter and sampling event, the odds of testing IAV positive were 7.9 (95% CI 1.4, 43.9) and 4.4 (95% CI 1.1, 17.1) times higher in groups of new gilts and piglets compared to groups of gilts, respectively. Results indicate that new gilts and piglets had higher odds of testing IAV positive than gilts in swine breeding herds and that season influences IAV infection in pigs. Based on these findings, we recommend that IAV control strategies be aimed at preventing infection before gilts are introduced into the farm, and in pigs prior to weaning.

El siguiente artículo presenta la estructura del programa de la Licenciatura en Recreación y Turismo de la Facultad de Educación Física de la Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, propuesta que pretende seguir innovando y presentado nuevos retos de formación y proyección profesional a los egresados de dicha facultad.

El propósito de este artículo es exponer y afirmar las posibilidades de investigación, conceptualización y creación de un turismo alternativo al hegemónico, de acuerdo con la búsqueda de otras formas de vivir no convencionales. El texto empieza exponiendo algunas consideraciones sobre el aporte del pensamiento ácrata en función tanto de rechazar el dogmatismo como de delinear la perspectiva desde la que se dibuja un horizonte distinto respecto al hombre en sociedad. En seguida, se muestra una orientación posible para dar sentido a una práctica turística alternativa a la meramente mercantil, en cuanto a la recreación de la cultura cosmopolita. Finalmente, se aborda brevemente la relación del turismo con la educación en la vía del pensamiento ácrata respecto a la pregunta por el mañana.

El propósito de este documento es establecer una relación conceptual entre la filosofía de la agencia y la filosofía del juego con el fin de contribuir argumentalmente a fortalecer la tesis según la cual la vida es un juego o, en otras palabras, que el hecho de vivir es equivalente al hecho de jugar. Para ello, se aborda en primer lugar lo que podría denominarse una indagación conceptual del juego, en la cual la pregunta por la agencia humana es ineludible al presentar al hombre como jugador. En seguida, se trata la pregunta por la agencia en términos de lo que nos preocupa como impulso de la acción. Finalmente, dadas las razones por las cuales es posible hablar de la vida como un juego, se trata la importancia que esto comporta conforme la posibilidad de aceptar el vivir como la búsqueda e invención constante de su sentido.

Hip fractures in the elderly individuals are a complex problem. Our objective was to determine whether orthogeriatric treatment is effective in terms of reducing length of hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality of elderly patients with a hip fracture compared with orthopedic (traditional) treatment. From July 2009 to May 2011, patients older than 65 years with a hip fracture were followed prospectively. They were co-treated by geriatric and orthopedic teams. This cohort was compared with a retrospective cohort followed from January 2007 to June 2009 that was managed by the orthopedic surgery team only. Epidemiology, pre- and postoperative hematocrit, and renal function were registered. Also, in-hospital and distant mortality data (determined by consulting the national registry), mortality-associated factors, postoperative complications, hospital stay length, and transfers to other services were registered. One hundred and eighty-three patients in the retrospective group and 92 in the prospective group were included in this study with a median follow-up of 26 months (interquartile range: 13-41). The average age was 84 years and 74% of patients were female. Intertrochanteric fracture accounted for 51% of the cases. There was no difference between groups with regard to hospital stay length, hematocrit at discharge, in-hospital mortality, long-term survival, or transfers to internal medicine or the intensive care unit. It did show differences in the transfer to the intermediate care unit, prolonged hospitalizations (>20 days), and diagnosis of delirium and anemia requiring transfusion. In the present study, orthogeriatric treatment is slightly more effective than traditional treatment in terms of morbidity, but there is no difference in hospital stay length or mortality. Further studies and longer follow-up are needed to draw more conclusions.

Objectives: The evidence on water intake in the prevention of kidney function decline is scarce at population level in well-being individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Therefore, we aimed to longitudinally evaluate the associations between total water intake and subtypes and kidney function, through estimated-Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR). Methods: Three-year prospective analysis conducted in 1986 older adults (aged 55–75 year) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Water intake was assessed using validated beverage and food frequency questionnaires. Serum creatinine-based eGFR (SCr-based eGFR; ml/min/1.73 m2) was estimated using the CKD-EPI equation at baseline, one-year and 3-years of follow-up. Mixed-effects linear regression models were fitted to evaluate the associations between baseline total water intake and subtypes, and SCr-based eGFR over 3-years of follow-up. Results: Participants in the highest baseline tertile of total water intake, plain water and water from all fluids showed a lower decrease in SCr-based eGFR after 3-years of follow-up, compared to those in the lowest tertile. Participants with the highest tap water consumption showed a lower SCr-based eGFR decline after 1-year and 3-years of follow-up, in comparerd to participants in the lowest intake category (T3 vs. T1: β: 1.4 ml/min/1.73 m2; 95%CI: 0.5–2.3, β: 1.0; 95%CI: 0.1–2.0, respectively). Conclusions: Plain water rather than other water sources, and especially tap water, was associated with lower kidney function decline assessed through eGFR over 3-years of follow-up, in older individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Virtual prototyping combined with additive manufacturing technologies are opening new horizons in healthcare and biomimetic medical device personalisation is becoming feasible and competitive. Finite element-based optimisation combined with metallic additive manufacturing has already demonstrated the physical prototyping of interesting topologies for innovative articular prostheses. However, metallic implants are biomechanically and biologically suboptimal and a shift to ceramic materials, for bone replacement and articular implants, could result interesting. To this end, challenges liked to the engineering design of large-sized topology optimised ceramic implants and their additive manufacture still need to be overcome and exemplified. Accordingly, the whole engineering design of innovative short stem hip prostheses is presented here. Different approaches to the virtual prototyping of massive ceramic implants, involving strategies for their topology optimisation, are tested and systematically compared from biomechanical and mechanobiological perspectives. After virtual validation, the selected alternatives are successfully prototyped employing lithography-based ceramic manufacturing of alumina-toughened zirconia, which constitutes a design-enabled manufacturing breakthrough considering the massive implants achieved. Non-destructive evaluation using X-ray computed tomography allows for quantitative quality control and defect detection. Summarising, the study provides a systematic knowledge-based methodology for the engineering of topology optimised ceramic implants for critically sized defects with remarkable biomechanical and mechanobiological performance.

Influenza A viruses (IAV) impose significant respiratory disease burdens in both swine and humans worldwide, with frequent human-to-swine transmission driving viral evolution in pigs and highlighting the risk at the animal-human interface. Therefore, a comprehensive One Health approach (interconnection among human, animal, and environmental health) is needed for IAV prevention, control, and response. Animal influenza genomic surveillance remains limited in many Latin American countries, including Colombia. To address this gap, we genetically characterized 170 swine specimens from Colombia (2011–2017). Whole genome sequencing revealed a predominance of pandemic-like H1N1 lineage, with a minority belonging to H3N2 and H1N2 human seasonal-like lineage and H1N1 early classical swine lineages. Significantly, we have identified reassortant and recombinant viruses (H3N2, H1N1) not previously reported in Colombia. This suggests a broad genotypic viral diversity, likely resulting from reassortment between classical endemic viruses and new introductions established in Colombia's swine population (e.g. the 2009 H1N1 pandemic). Our study highlights the importance of a One Health approach in disease control, particularly in an ecosystem where humans are a main source of IAV to swine populations, and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance and enhanced biosecurity measures. The co-circulation of multiple subtypes in regions with high swine density facilitates viral exchange, underscoring the importance of monitoring viral evolution to inform vaccine selection and public health policies locally and globally.

ABSTRACTThe present work advances a methodology to optimise variables involved in fluid dynamic phenomena for augmented wind turbines. Particularly, the study focuses on improving the performance of a convergent-divergent augmented wind turbine based on eolic cells designed to increase wind speed at the throat section, where a peripherally supported magnetic levitation rotor will be installed as part of a novel wind energy system for distributed generation. Previous studies focused on maximising average wind velocity as the target variable. In contrast, this study shifted its focus to power density, resulting in more effective and consistent results. Numerical axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to determine the impact of these improvements. Response surfaces were created for parametric analysis, and the metamodel of optimal prognosis was implemented to provide accuracy. The results indicate a significant improvement in available power, with an average increase of up to 12.5 times compared to non-augmented conditions.

Polydora hoplura is an invasive species and a harmful pest in commercial shellfish aquaculture, particularly for farmed abalone species. Different lines of treatment for Polydora affecting abalone have been explored, but with limited success. Using selective breeding to increase abalone resistance to and reduce shell damage from Polydora infestation could be a promising alternative. However, in abalone there is currently no information on the genetic variability for resistance to Polydora infestation. In the present study, heritability (h2) of traits associated with Pacific abalone resistance to P. hoplura were estimated after challenging abalone juveniles with trojan abalones heavily infested, using a nested experimental design, with 1 male crossed with 2–4 females. The heritability values were low but significant for some of those traits: survival h2=0.09; Infestation Intensity at Q50 h2 = 0.16 ± 0.11; and the proportion of the shell area occupied by blisters caused by the mud-worms h2 = 0.29 ± 0.14. These results suggest a significant potential for improving resistance or tolerance to P. hoplura infestation through selective breeding in Pacific abalone.

This innovative study proposes a revolutionary strategy to enhance the efficacy and customization of hip arthroplasty, focusing on a short prosthesis design meticulously tailored to individual patient needs, with special emphasis on the femoral stem. The implemented methodology involves data collection through a meshless software, which quantifies the stress/strain shielding resulting from femoral insertion. Automatic pre-processing is performed using clustering algorithms, allowing the data to be divided into anatomical areas of the body. Subsequently, training of machine learning algorithms, such as random forests and stacking, is carried out to accurately predict the shielding caused by the stem. These predictions are based on design parameters, specifically linked to the patient's femoral cavity dimensions and their relationship to stem size, which are quantified through dimensionless parameters and serve as model inputs. The reliability of the models is confirmed by evaluation of data from patient with different femoral morphology than those used during the training and validation phases. This approach not only provides fast and cost-effective analyses for medical experts and engineers, but the described methodology can also be successfully extended to the development of alternative arthroplasty prostheses, such as shoulder and knee implants.

Food insecurity (FI) expresses irregular access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. We analyze the association between clusters of sociodemographic characteristics and FI in university students from Mexico. The Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale was applied, and household type, socioeconomic status (SES), and the characteristics of the head of the household, among others, were asked in a cross-sectional study. We performed Two-Step cluster analysis and logistic regression models. We included 466 university students (72.5% women, 47% with FI). We identified three clusters; Cluster-1 (n = 163) included a single-parent (37.4%) or co-resident/roommate (27%) household type, middle SES (63.2%); the head of the household is usually a woman (76.1%), single (71.8%), and with bachelor’s degree (41.7%) or less educational level (46.6%). Cluster-2 (n = 144) included the nuclear (89.6%) household type, high SES (76.4%); the head of the household is usually a man (79.2%), in a relationship (99.3%), and with a bachelor’s degree (63.2%) or graduate level (33.3%). Cluster-3 (n = 147) is very similar to Cluster-2. The difference is that Cluster-3 includes middle SES (70.1%), and the head of the household’s educational level is high school or less (100%). Only belonging to Cluster-1 was positively associated with FI (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.24, 3.09). These results show the interrelationships between multiple sociodemographic characteristics and should contribute to developing interventions that simultaneously address numerous sociodemographic factors to diminish FI in university students.

We aimed to analyze the association between food insecurity (FI) and academic performance in university students, including mental health and sleep quality (SQ), in an association model. A cross-sectional design included university students (n = 466, 72.5% women) from Mexico. We applied the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale, the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Students self-reported their academic grading (AG) and perceptions about their academic performance. Spearman’s rho and multiple logistic regression models were used. Almost half (47%) experienced some level of FI. The median AG was 95. AG was not significantly (p > 0.05) correlated with FI, nor with depression, anxiety, stress, and SQ. Considering mental health and SQ, moderate/severe FI remained significantly associated with perceived overall progress in college (OR: 2.96; 95%CI: 1.49, 5.88) and attendance to classes (OR:3.14; 95%CI: 1.19, 8.28) as poor or regular, and it was positively related to perceiving difficulties in completing their studies (OR:2.75; 95%CI: 1.43, 5.29). Stress, anxiety, depression symptoms, and poor SQ were also significantly associated with poor/regular perception of academic performance. These findings highlight the need to address psychological and nutritional factors in university students to promote their well-being and academic success.

Binder jetting 3D printing is an additive manufacturing technique based on the creation of a part through the selective bonding of powder with an adhesive, followed by a sintering process at high temperature to densify the material and produce parts with acceptable properties. Due to the high initial porosity in the material after sintering, which is typically around 5%, post-sintering treatments are often required to increase the material density and enhance the mechanical and fatigue properties of the final component. This paper focuses on the study of the benefits of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) after sintering on the mechanical and fatigue properties of a binder jetting Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Two different HIP processes were considered in this study: one at 920 °C/100 MPa for 4 h, and a second at a higher pressure but lower temperature (HIP-HPLT) at 850 °C/200 MPa for 2 h. The effects of the HIP on the densification, microstructure, mechanical behavior, and fatigue properties were investigated. The results show that the HIP-HPLT process produced a significant increase in the mechanical and fatigue properties of the material compared with the as-sintered parts and even with the conventional HIP process. However, the fatigue and fracture micromechanisms suggest that the oxygen content, which resulted from the decomposition of the binder during the sintering process, played a critical role in the final mechanical properties. Oxygen could reduce the ductility and fatigue life, which deviated from the behavior observed in other additive manufacturing techniques, such as powder bed fusion (PBF).

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) is one of the main culprits of BRD; however, research on BHV-1 is hampered by the lack of suitable models for infection and drug testing. In this study, we established a novel bovine tracheal organoid culture grown in a basement membrane extract type 2 (BME2) matrix and compared it with the air–liquid interface (ALI) culture system. After differentiation, the matrix-embedded organoids developed beating cilia and demonstrated a transcriptomic profile similar to the ALI culture system. The matrix-embedded organoids were also highly susceptible to BHV-1 infection and immune stimulation by Pam2Cys, an immunomodulator, which resulted in robust cytokine production and tracheal antimicrobial peptide mRNA upregulation. However, treatment of bovine tracheal organoid cultures with Pam2Cys was not sufficient to inhibit viral infection or replication, suggesting a role of the non-epithelial cellular microenvironment in vivo.

Abstract Background University students are often affected by food insecurity (FI) and this situation has been associated with low consumption of fruit/vegetables and high intake of added sugars and sweet drinks. However, there needs to be more evidence on the association between FI and dietary patterns (DPs), assessing the overall diet and allowing analysis of commonly consumed food combinations. We aimed to analyze the association between FI and DPs in university students’ households. Methods We used data from 7659 university student households from the 2018 Mexican National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH, for its acronym in Spanish). We obtained FI levels (mild, moderate, and severe) using the validated Mexican Food Security Scale (EMSA, Spanish acronym). Two DPs were identified by principal component analysis based on the weekly frequency of consumption of 12 food groups. Multivariate logistic regression adjusted by university student and household’s characteristics was applied. Results Compared to food security, households with mild-FI (OR:0.34; 95%CI:0.30, 0.40), moderate-FI (OR:0.20; 95%CI:0.16, 0.24) or severe-FI (OR:0.14; 95%CI:0.11, 0.19) were less likely to adhere to the dietary pattern “Fruits, vegetables and foods rich in animal protein” (fruits, vegetables, meat, fish or seafood, dairy products, and starchy vegetables). In addition, people with severe-FI (OR:0.51; 95% CI:0.34, 0.76) were also less likely to adhere to the dietary pattern “Traditional-Westernized” (pulses, oils or fats, sugar, sweets, industrialized drinks, foods made from corn/maize, wheat, rice, oats or bran, coffee, tea and eggs). Conclusions In these households FI impairs the ability to consume a healthy dietary pattern (fruits/vegetables and foods rich in animal protein). In addition, the intake of foods typical of the Mexican food culture reflecting the local Western dietary pattern is compromised in households with severe-FI.

Equine influenza is a viral disease caused by the equine influenza virus (EIV), and according to the WOAH, it is mandatory to report these infections. In Latin America and Colombia, EIV risk factors have not been analyzed. The objective of this research is to perform an epidemiological and molecular analysis of the EIV in horses with respiratory symptoms from 2020 to 2023 in Colombia. Molecular EIV detection was performed using RT–qPCR and nanopore sequencing. A risk analysis was also performed via the GEE method. A total of 188 equines with EIV respiratory symptoms were recruited. The positivity rate was 33.5%. The descriptive analysis showed that only 12.8% of the horses were vaccinated, and measures such as the quarantine and isolation of symptomatic animals accounted for 91.5% and 88.8%, respectively. The variables associated with the EIV were the non-isolation of positive individuals (OR = 8.16, 95% CI (1.52–43.67), p = 0.014) and sharing space with poultry (OR = 2.16, 95% CI (1.09–4.26), p = 0.027). In conclusion, this is the first EIV investigation in symptomatic horses in Colombia, highlighting the presence of the virus in the country and the need to improve preventive and control measures.

Utilizando métodos innovadores, exploramos patrones de satisfacción con el tiempo libre en adultos chilenos. Mediante un análisis de clases latentes, identificamos cuatro patrones de satisfacción diferentes. Por medio de regresión logística multinomial, examinamos los factores sociodemográficos que determinan la probabilidad de pertenecer a uno u otro de estos patrones. Los resultados muestran que la edad es el principal factor que define esta probabilidad, siendo los mayores de 56 años los más propensos a pertenecer a la clase de mayor satisfacción. Esta conclusión es coherente con los datos empíricos sobre la disponibilidad objetiva de tiempo libre. En cuanto a los ingresos, los individuos del quintil 4 tienen menos probabilidades de pertenecer al grupo de mayor satisfacción. No observamos diferencias al comparar hombres y mujeres. Sin embargo, sí se observan al evaluar la intersección entre el sexo y las condiciones de vivir en pareja y tener hijos de 0 a 4 años. Nuestros hallazgos cuestionan los patrones de paternidad en parejas heterosexuales en Chile y sugieren que las mujeres en tales condiciones tienen menos probabilidades de pertenecer a la clase de mayor satisfacción.

4D printing is the additive manufacturing (3D printing) of objects that can transform their shape in a controlled and predictable way when subjected to external stimuli. A thermo-responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) is a highly suitable material to 4D print smart devices, due to its actuation function and the capability of recovering its original shape from the deformed one upon heating. This study presents the results of employing an epoxy resin in the additive manufacturing of complex-shaped smart devices with shape-morphing properties using laser stereolithography (SLA). To quantify the shape memory behaviour of the shape memory epoxy (SMEp), we first investigate the thermomechanical properties of the 3D-printed specimens in a tensile testing machine coupled with an environmental thermal chamber. This approach allows us to determine the shape fixity and recovery of SMEp. Next, we propose effective designs of complex-shaped devices, with the aim of promoting shape morphing through micro-actuators and compliant joints acting as active regions in combination with multiplying mechanisms or kinematic chains in each of the devices. We manufacture the complex-shaped prototypes by using SLA directly from the computer-aided designs. The shape memory trials of the 3D-printed prototypes reveal quite precise shape recovery of the devices, illustrating their shape-memory. In fact, the inclusion of micro-actuators and compliant joints within the complex-geometry devices allows for local triggering, deformation and recovery, resulting in a prompt response of the devices to heat. Therefore, innovative designs, along with the suitable smart material and high-quality manufacturing process, lead to 4D printed devices with fast actuation and shape-morphing properties. Overall, this research may contribute to the development of smart materials and 4D printing technology for applications in fields such as biomedical engineering, robotics, transport and aerospace engineering.

Plaque Psoriasis (PP) and periodontitis are inflammatory disorders with a bidirectional association. They both have a qualitatively similar immune-modulatory cascade, cytokine profile, and a recently described dysbiosis. Different oral bacterial species compositions in the periodontal pocket might play a role in the development of PP. To describe the subgingival microbiota of the Mexican population with PP and the periodontal conditions. Subjects were divided into two groups: periodontal health (PH) (PH-non-PP, PH-PP) and periodontitis (PD) (P-non-PP, PD-PP). Following clinical examination, the patients were classified into three groups according to the degree of psoriasis as measured by the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) and the periodontal status according to the parameters of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). Subgingival microbiota samples of each patient were used to determine 40 species of periodontal bacteria by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization. IL-2 and IL-6 were measured by ELISA. Of the forty-eight patients with PP, 21 patients had PH and 27 patients had PD. PD-PP group has a significant increase in the percentage of plaque, gingival redness, pocket probing depth, and clinical attachment loss (P 5 related to periodontitis with the predominance of Actinomyces periodontal, irrespective of their periodontal condition. Finally, the severity of psoriasis could be unbalanced in subgingival microbiota and increase the risk to develop periodontitis.

Abstract Evidence suggests that iron status may be linked to symptoms of childhood attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but there is little data available on the relationship between iron status in pregnancy and the risk of developing ADHD. And the data that does exist is inconsistent. Our aim here is to assess the effect of maternal serum ferritin (SF) and haemoglobin (Hb) levels during pregnancy on manifestations of ADHD in children at 7 years of age. This prospective study analysed data from 1204 mother–child pairs from three Spanish cohorts participating in the INMA project. Maternal SF and Hb levels during pregnancy and other mother and child characteristics were collected. The children’s ADHD behaviours were reported by their parents using Conners’ Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short Form (CPRS-R:S). In the unadjusted regression analysis, maternal SF was positively associated with children’s T-scores on the subscales Cognitive problems/Inattention (β: 0.63, 95%CI 0.06–1.19; p = 0.029) and ADHD index (β: 0.72, 95%CI 0.20–1.24; p = 0.007). These associations were not present after multivariate adjustment or stratification by first and second trimester of pregnancy. The Hb levels were not related to any of the CPRS-R:S subscales in unadjusted or multivariate-adjusted models. We observed no association between maternal SF or Hb levels and the risk of ADHD symptomatology (T-score ≥ 65 for CPRS-R:S subscales). Our results suggest that neither maternal SF nor Hb levels during pregnancy are related to ADHD symptoms in 7-year-old children.

Metamaterials are engineered materials conceived and designed to achieve very special or even unique physical properties, which depend on the designed micro or nanostructures, more than on the chemical composition of the raw materials employed for their fabrication. Normally metamaterials are made of periodic repetitions of unit cells or Boolean combinations of lattices or porous building blocks. Metasurfaces are the quasi-two-dimensional version of metamaterials and are generally applied to controlling electromagnetic and acoustic waves reaching them. Metamaterials are mainly created through high-precision additive manufacturing technologies, while metasurfaces are normally obtained using micromanufacturing techniques from the electronics industry and laser patterning methods. Consequently, the potential benefits and industrial applications of multi-scale or hierarchical metastructures, which could be obtained by merging metamaterials and metasurfaces, remain unexplored. Through the innovative combination of 3D CAD modelling resources and specific tools for computational mapping of topographical 2D images this study validates the possibility of texturing the building blocks and unit cells of metamaterials, hence reaching designs with interwoven metamaterials and metasurfaces. These microtextured lattices are additively manufactured, using two-photon polymerisation, to demonstrate the feasibility of bridging the gap between metamaterials and metasurfaces and analyse current challenges and potential applications of these digital materials.

We studied atmospheric corrosion on Rapa Nui Island, using galvanized and non-galvanized SAE 1020 steel samples exposed on racks. We also added Charpy samples of both materials to directly determine the effect of corrosion rate on these materials' impact toughness. The results indicated a correlation between corrosion rate and toughness loss in the studied materials. In the corrosion study, we could also demonstrate the effect from increased insular population growth on contaminants which aid atmospheric corrosivity. Results showed that atmospheric SO2 has tripled compared with similar corrosion studies done 20 years ago (Mapa Iberoamericano de Corrosión, MICAT), increasing corrosion rates. Our results show how human factors can influence changes in environmental variables that strengthen corrosion.

El caso que presentamos muestra una manifestación atípica: un paciente de edad avanzada consultó por cambios en el comportamiento y risas inmotivadas; durante la hospitalización, se estableció la presencia de crisis gelásticas, las cuales fueron atribuidas a zona de gliosis temporal izquierda por antecedente de hematoma epidural en esta localización. Se concluye que este tipo de crisis epiléptica en población de la tercera edad es el resultado de etiologías distintas al hamartoma hipotalámico.

Additive and lithographic manufacturing technologies using photopolymerisation provide a powerful tool for fabricating multiscale structures, which is especially interesting for biomimetic scaffolds and biointerfaces. However, most resins are tailored to one particular fabrication technology, showing drawbacks for versatile use. Hence, we used a resin based on thiol-ene chemistry, leveraging its numerous advantages such as low oxygen inhibition, minimal shrinkage and high monomer conversion. The resin is tailored to applications in additive and lithographic technologies for future biofabrication where fast curing kinetics in the presence of oxygen are required, namely 3D inkjet printing, digital light processing and nanoimprint lithography. These technologies enable us to fabricate scaffolds over a span of six orders of magnitude with a maximum of 10 mm and a minimum of 150 nm in height, including bioinspired porous structures with controlled architecture, hole-patterned plates and micro/submicro patterned surfaces. Such versatile properties, combined with noncytotoxicity, degradability and the commercial availability of all the components render the resin as a prototyping material for tissue engineers.

The study of dietary patterns during pregnancy may be of great importance for determining the potential risk of obesity in childhood. We assessed the prospective association between maternal adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) during pregnancy and risk of childhood overweight/obesity at 4 years. This prospective analysis involved 272 mother–child pairs from the ECLIPSES study. Maternal diet during pregnancy was assessed using a validated 45-item food-frequency questionnaire and a relative whole-pregnancy MedDiet score (rMedDiet) was calculated. The children’s weight and height were measured at the age of 4. Primary outcome was childhood overweight/obesity based on age- and-sex-specific BMI z-score > 85th percentile using the WHO child growth standards. Mean maternal rMedDiet score in pregnancy was 9.8 (±standard deviation 2.3) and 25.7% of the children were overweight/obese. Significant differences in anthropometric measurements (weight, height, and BMI) were found according to sex, with higher scores for boys. After controlling for potential confounders, greater maternal adherence to rMedDiet during pregnancy was associated with a lower risk of childhood overweight/obesity, highest vs. lowest quartile (OR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.12–0.90; p-trend 0.037). Similar trends regarding this association (per 1-point increase rMedDiet score) were observed after stratification by advanced maternal age, maternal early pregnancy BMI, education, socioeconomic status, smoking, and gestational weight gain. Our findings suggest that closer adherence to the MedDiet during pregnancy may protect against the risk of offspring overweight/obesity at 4 years. Further research is needed to explore whether associations persist across the life course.

In this randomized clinical trial, we evaluated the effects of prenatal iron supplementation adapted to pregnant women’s initial hemoglobin (Hb) levels on fetal growth parameters until birth in women from the Mediterranean coast of northern Spain. All (n = 791) women were iron-supplemented during pregnancy according to Hb levels at the 12th gestational week: stratum 1 (Hb: 110–130 g/L) received 40 or 80 mg iron daily; stratum 2 (Hb > 130 g/L) received 40 or 20 mg iron daily. Fetal biometric and anthropometric measurements were evaluated in the three trimesters and at birth, respectively. In stratum 1, using 80 mg/d instead of 40 mg/d increased the risk of fetal head circumference > 90th percentile (OR = 2.49, p = 0.015) at the second trimester and fetal weight (OR = 2.36, p = 0.011) and femur length (OR = 2.50, p = 0.018) < 10th percentile at the third trimester. For stratum 2, using 40 mg/d instead of 20 mg/d increased the risk of fetal head circumference > 90th percentile (OR = 3.19, p = 0.039) at the third trimester. A higher risk of delivering an LGA baby (OR = 2.35, p = 0.015) for birthweight was also observed in stratum 1 women receiving 80 mg/d. It is crucial to adjust the prenatal iron supplementation to each pregnant woman’s needs, i.e., adapted to their initial Hb levels, to achieve optimal fetal development, since excessive iron doses appear to adversely influence fetal growth.

Abstract Background Equid gammaherpesvirus 2 (EHV2) is a gammaherpesvirus with a widespread distribution in horse populations globally. Although its pathogenic significance can be unclear in most cases of infection, EHV2 infection can cause upper respiratory tract disease in foals. Co-infection of different strains of EHV2 in an individual horse is common. Small regions of the EHV2 genome have shown considerable genetic heterogeneity. This could suggest genomic recombination between different strains of EHV2, similar to the extensive recombination networks that have been demonstrated for some alphaherpesviruses. This study examined natural recombination and genome diversity of EHV2 field isolates. Results Whole genome sequencing analysis of 18 EHV2 isolates, along with analysis of two publicly available EHV2 genomes, revealed variation in genomes sizes (from 173.7 to 184.8 kbp), guanine plus cytosine content (from 56.7 to 57.8%) and the size of the terminal repeat regions (from 17,196 to 17,551 bp). The nucleotide sequence identity between the genomes ranged from 86.2 to 99.7%. The estimated average inter-strain nucleotide diversity between the 20 EHV2 genomes was 2.9%. Individual gene sequences showed varying levels of nucleotide diversity and ranged between 0 and 38.1%. The ratio of nonsynonymous substitutions, Ka, to synonymous substitutions, Ks, (Ka/Ks) suggests that over 50% of EHV2 genes are undergoing diversifying selection. Recombination analyses of the 20 EHV2 genome sequences using the recombination detection program (RDP4) and SplitsTree revealed evidence of viral recombination. Conclusions Analysis of the 18 new EHV2 genomes alongside the 2 previously sequenced genomes revealed a high degree of genetic diversity and extensive recombination networks. Herpesvirus genome diversification and virus evolution can be driven by recombination, and our findings are consistent with recombination being a key mechanism by which EHV2 genomes may vary and evolve.

Abstract In this study, authors explore the application of modelling and additive layer manufacturing (ALM) for creating and testing materials with interlocking structures aimed to reduce the stress concentration along the edges of a typical lap joint. The effectiveness of this approach is discussed by means of modelling and experimental validation of joints with interlocking structures obtained by ALM. Considering the achieved results, ALM of interlocking structures constitutes an interesting alternative or complement to traditional joining processes, as it may help to minimize stress mismatches in the joining region. It may also prevent the use of adhesive or joining post processes, because the joint is created together with the joined components.

Introducción: La amiloidosis hereditaria mediada por transtirretina es una enfermedad autosómica dominante, con compromiso sistémico y progresivo, que altera la función de múltiples órganos, y se asocia con una alta morbilidad y mortalidad. Se presenta compromiso neurológico, cardiaco, autonómico, oftalmológico y nefrológico, entre otros, que se relacionan con el genotipo del paciente. Estas alteraciones afectan la calidad de vida y tienen una relación directa con la mortalidad temprana en estos pacientes. La neuropatía periférica es un marcador temprano de la enfermedad. Su identificación permite un tratamiento temprano con terapias modificadoras de la enfermedad, en busca de la estabilización de la progresión de la enfermedad, lo cual, acompañado de un seguimiento adecuado, tiene un impacto positivo en la calidad de vida de los pacientes y una prolongación de la expectativa de vida. Objetivo: Estructurar una serie de recomendaciones adecuadas al entorno local sobre el tratamiento y seguimiento en pacientes con amiloidosis hereditaria mediada por transtirretina. Materiales y método: Se utilizó la metodología Delphi y se estableció como punto de corte un 75% de favorabilidad. Resultados y conclusiones: Se plantearon una serie de recomendaciones basadas en la evidencia disponible y las recomendaciones internacionales, aplicables al entorno local, sobre métodos diagnósticos que faciliten la detección temprana del paciente afectado y los parámetros de inicio del tratamiento y el seguimiento que mejoren la calidad de vida, disminuyan las complicaciones y aumenten la expectativa de vida de estos pacientes.

Abstract Atmospheric corona discharge devices are being studied as innovative systems for cooling, sterilization, and propulsion, in several industrial fields, from robotics to medical devices, from drones to space applications. However, their industrial scale implementation still requires additional understanding of several complex phenomena, such as corrosion, degradation, and fatigue behaviour, which may affect final system performance. This study focuses on the corrosive behaviour of wires that perform as a high-voltage electrode subject to DC positive corona discharge in atmospheric air. The experiments demonstrate that the non-thermal plasma process promotes the growth of the oxidative films and modifies the physicochemical properties of the materials chosen as corona electrodes, hence affecting device operation. Surfaces exposed to this non-thermal plasma are electrically characterized by negative exponential decay of time-depend power and analysed with SEM. Implications on performance are analysed and discussed.
