Abstract Background: Relative fat mass (RFM) represents a newly developed sex-specific anthropometric formula to estimate total body fat percentage. Nonetheless, research examining the correlation between RFM and the risk of diabetes remains scarce. This research assessed the link between RFM and DM risk within the Japanese demographic. Methods: From 2004 to 2015, 15,462 Japanese individuals without diabetes underwent physical evaluations at Murakami Memorial Hospital. The relationship between RFM and the onset of diabetes was analyzed separately using Cox proportional-hazards regression models. This study employed Cox proportional hazards regression incorporating cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting to detect non-linear associations between RFM and new cases of diabetes, categorized by sex. Sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the robustness of the link between RFM and incident diabetes. Results: After controlling for confounding factors, a significant positive correlation between RFM and diabetes risk was found in women (HR: 1.13, 95%CI: 1.04–1.24, P = 0.0061), while the association in men was not statistically significant (HR: 1.05, 95%CI: 0.98–1.13, P = 0.1511). Additionally, a non-linear relationship between RFM and the incidence of diabetes was detected in both genders. The RFM threshold was identified at 39.23 for women and 23.08 for men. For women, HR was 1.11 (95%CI: 1.01–1.21) below the threshold and 1.39 (95%CI: 1.17–1.65) above it. In men, an RFM above 23.08 was positively related to diabetes risk (HR: 1.16, 95%CI: 1.06–1.28, P = 0.0012), whereas an RFM below this point did not show a significant association (HR: 0.98, 95%CI: 0.91–1.06, P = 0.5899). Conclusion: Our findings suggest a non-linear relationship and threshold effect between RFM and the risk of diabetes. These findings imply that maintaining RFM at lower levels may be beneficial in mitigating the onset of DM.

Abstract Background Health literacy is a core public health issue in relation to children and adolescents associated with multiple health behaviours and health outcomes. The aim of the study is to test the direct associations between health literacy, physical activity behaviour, health outcomes of body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness among Slovak adolescents and possible indirect effect of health literacy on health outcomes of body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness mediated by adolescents’ physical activity behaviour. Methods Data from the Slovak Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study conducted in 2022 were used. For the purposes of this study, a subsample of the adolescents (n = 508; mean age = 14.50; SD = 0.82; 54.3% boys) which provided HBSC questionnaire data on health literacy, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and vigorous physical activity and participated in body composition (InBody 230) and cardiorespiratory fitness (20-m shuttle run test) measurements. Data were analysed using linear regression analysis. Results The findings showed that higher health literacy of the adolescents was directly associated with higher frequency of physical activity represented by moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and vigorous physical activity and only with the visceral fat area in the crude model. Furthermore, there was an indirect effect of health literacy on cardiorespiratory fitness and most of the body composition variables (except the Body Mass Index) which was mediated by physical activity of the respondents. Conclusions Health literacy is indirectly associated to body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness through higher frequency of physical activity. It seems that health literacy as cognitive and social competencies need behavioural components to be involved in the proposed causal pathway between health literacy and health outcomes. Our findings may contribute to the process of creating a framework for future health literacy interventions in adolescents.

Abstract Background Preclinical rheumatoid arthritis (Pre‐RA) is defined as the early stage before the development of clinical RA. While cachexia is a well‐known and potentially modifiable complication of RA, it is not known if such an association exists also in the Pre‐RA stage. To investigate such issue, we aimed to compare the longitudinal alterations in the muscle composition and adiposity of participants with Pre‐RA with the matched controls. Methods In this observational cohort study, the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) participants were categorized into Pre‐RA and propensity score (PS)‐matched control groups. Pre‐RA was retrospectively defined as the absence of RA from baseline to year‐2, with progression to physician‐diagnosed clinical RA between years 3–8 of the follow‐up period. Using a validated deep learning algorithm, we measured MRI biomarkers of thigh muscles and adiposity at baseline and year‐2 follow‐ups of the cohort. The outcomes were the differences between Pre‐RA and control groups in the 2‐year rate of change for thigh muscle composition [cross‐sectional area (CSA) and intramuscular adipose tissue (Intra‐MAT)] and adiposity [intermuscular adipose tissue (Inter‐MAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)]. Linear mixed‐effect regression models were used for comparison. Results After 1:3 PS‐matching of the groups for confounding variables (demographics, risk factors, co‐morbidities, and knee osteoarthritis status), 408 thighs (102 Pre‐RA and 306 control) of 322 participants were included (age mean ± SD: 61.7 ± 8.9 years; female/male: 1.8). Introduction: Indian type 2 diabetics (T2D) is known for poor disease control on which self-reported physical activity (SRPA) and optimum body composition have positive impact. We determined prevalence of SRPA and general/visceral obesity and its impact on HbA1c-based glycemia. Methodology: By a cross-sectional study conducted on 200 T2Ds in a private clinic, HbA1c-based glycemic status, WHO questionnaire-based SRPA, BMI-based general obesity, and bipolar bioelectrical impedance-based visceral obesity were evaluated. SRPA and obesity were compared and associated with glycaemic status keeping mean HbA1c as cutoff. Result: Mean age, male%, mean duration of T2D, mean BMI, mean HbA1c, and SRPA prevalence were 54 years, 42.5%, 4.82 years, 25.49, 8.69%, and 61.5%, respectively. Abstract Background Adiposity shows opposing associations with mortality within COVID-19 versus non-COVID-19 respiratory conditions. We assessed the likely causality of adiposity for mortality among intensive care patients with COVID-19 versus non-COVID-19 by examining the consistency of associations across temporal and geographical contexts where biases vary. Methods We used data from 297 intensive care units (ICUs) in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre Case Mix Programme). We examined associations of body mass index (BMI) with 30-day mortality, overall and by date and region of ICU admission, among patients admitted with COVID-19 (N = 34,701; February 2020–August 2021) and non-COVID-19 respiratory conditions (N = 25,205; February 2018–August 2019). Results Compared with non-COVID-19 patients, COVID-19 patients were younger, less often of a white ethnic group, and more often with extreme obesity. COVID-19 patients had fewer comorbidities but higher mortality. Socio-demographic and comorbidity factors and their associations with BMI and mortality varied more by date than region of ICU admission. Among COVID-19 patients, higher BMI was associated with excess mortality (hazard ratio (HR) per standard deviation (SD) = 1.05; 95% CI = 1.03–1.07). This was evident only for extreme obesity and only during February–April 2020 (HR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.30–1.77 vs. recommended weight); this weakened thereafter. Among non-COVID-19 patients, higher BMI was associated with lower mortality (HR per SD = 0.83; 95% CI = 0.81–0.86), seen across all overweight/obesity groups and across dates and regions, albeit with a magnitude that varied over time. Conclusions Obesity is associated with higher mortality among COVID-19 patients, but lower mortality among non-COVID-19 respiratory patients. These associations appear vulnerable to confounding/selection bias in both patient groups, questioning the existence or stability of causal effects.

Abstract Background Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) is a rare benign neoplasm, seldom ascribed as the cause of endocrine and metabolic derangement. We herein report a case of primary amenorrhea, growth arrest and metabolic syndrome. En bloc resection of the tumor normalized all the disturbances. Case presentation A 16-year-old girl complained of primary amenorrhea and growth arrest for the past 2 years. Her height and weight were at the 3rd percentile, whereas waist circumference was at the 90th percentile for chronological age. She was hypertensive on admission. Plasma cholesterol, triglyceride and uric acid were elevated. Evaluation of GH/IGF-1 axis showed extremely low IGF-1 concentration, which was unresponsive to hGH stimulation. Computer tomography identified a huge liver mass (18.2 cm×13.7 cm×21 cm). The patient underwent an uneventful open right hepatic lobectomy. The tumor was en bloc resected. Immunohistochemistry indicated an unclassified HCA, which was confirmed by genetic screening. IGF-1 concentration, blood pressure, lipid profile and ovarian function were all normalized after surgery, and the girl had reduction in waist circumference and gain in height during the follow up. Conclusion We provide evidence that liver-derived IGF-1 has a direct effect on skeletal and pubertal development, blood pressure, visceral adiposity and dyslipidemia independent of insulin resistance and obesity in the circumstance of undernutrition. Though rare, we propose the need to look into HCA cases for the existence of IGF-1 deficiency and its impact on metabolic derangement.

Follow-up was done within 72 hours of delivery for recording type of delivery, infant weight, mid-upper arm circumference, and skinfold thickness.Results: The odds of having higher skinfold thickness (> 90th percentile) were 43% higher (AOR = 1.43; 95% CI: 1.18, 1.74) and the odds of being overweight at birth was 34% higher (AOR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.62) for every 1 standard deviation (9.9 mg/dL) increase in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in male infants. The odds of delivering via caesarean section were 45% higher in women with female foetus (1.45,95% CI 1.15,1.82) for every one SD (23.4 mg/dl) increase in 2-h post-load Glucose.Conclusion: The impact of maternal glucose levels on infant and maternal outcomes differed notably between sex of the child. Compared to female infants, male infants exhibited a stronger association with elevated risks for adverse outcomes, including higher infant weight and increased skinfold thickness.Plain Language Summary: Glucose intolerance, in simple terms, refers to a condition where the body has difficulty processing sugar (glucose) properly. Normally, when we eat, our body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which is then used by cells for energy. However, in glucose intolerance, this process does not work as efficiently. This can lead to higher-than-normal blood sugar levels, which, if persistent, can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes over time. In this study, the researchers investigated how glucose intolerance during pregnancy results in negative health outcomes in mothers and infants in a South Indian City. This is significant as the adverse impact of glucose intolerance in Indian women is not widely studied. The Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) study was considered by WHO for defining GDM diagnosis primarily focused on Caucasian populations. Given the known ethnic differences in glucose metabolism and the high prevalence of gestational diabetes in India, understanding glucose intolerance, specifically in Indian women, is essential. In this research, all pregnant mothers underwent an oral glucose tolerance test between the 24th and 36th weeks of pregnancy. They fasted for 12 hours before their blood samples were taken to measure their fasting glucose levels. Then, they drank a glucose solution containing 75 g of glucose. After waiting for 2 hours, their glucose levels were measured again. Those with fasting glucose levels equal to or greater than 92 mg/dl and 2-hour post-load plasma glucose levels equal to or greater than 153 mg/dl were diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). After delivery, the weight and fat deposition under the skin; known as skinfold thickness (adiposity) were measured using a skinfold caliper.The risks of higher weight and skinfold were seen in male infants compared to female infants. Abstract Aims The impact of life-course different adiposity indices on diabetes mellitus (DM) is poorly understood. We aimed to do trajectory analysis with repeated measurements of adiposity indices in the development of DM among women across the lifespan. Methods This study prospectively investigated the 1,681 population of Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. At baseline, all individuals were free of diabetes. Trajectory analysis was used to identify homogeneous distinct clusters of adiposity indices trajectories and assign individuals to unique clusters. Results Of the 1681 healthy women, 320 progressed to the DM. Abstract Background Glucose metabolic disorder is associated with the risk of heart failure (HF). Adiposity is a comorbidity that is inextricably linked with abnormal glucose metabolism in older individuals. However, the effect of adiposity on the association between glucose metabolic disorder and HF risk, and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. Methods A total of 13,251 participants aged ≥ 60 years from a cohort study were categorized into euglycemia, prediabetes, uncontrolled diabetes, and well-controlled diabetes. Adiposity was assessed using body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and visceral fat area (VFA). Adiposity-associated metabolic activities were evaluated using adiponectin-to-leptin ratio (ALR), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and triglyceride-glucose index (TyG). The first occurrence of HF served as the outcome during the follow-up period. Results A total of 1,138 participants developed HF over the course of an average follow-up period of 10.9 years. The rate of incident HF occurrence was higher in prediabetes, uncontrolled diabetes, and well-controlled diabetes participants compared to that in euglycemia participants. However, the high rates were significantly attenuated by BMI, VFA, and WHR. Abstract Background Adipocytokines play a pivotal role in maintaining adipose tissue homeostasis by regulating cellular metabolism, proliferation, differentiation, and secretory activity. These soluble factors are relevant components for healthy adipose tissue, while their deficiency is closely associated with the development of obesity and related metabolic diseases, e.g., chronic inflammation. In human adipose tissue, inter-α-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 5 (ITIH5) is expressed in proportion to the development of adipose tissue, i.e., the individual’s BMI. Thus, ITIH5 has been proposed to be an inert marker of human obesity. However, when applied to adipose stem cells in vitro, recombinant (r)ITIH5 protein inhibited proliferation and adipogenesis, suggesting that ITIH5 negatively affects the development of fat mass. Abstract Background Increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) has been identified as a risk factor for obesity and various diseases, primarily in adults. Nonetheless, research in children is limited, especially regarding longitudinal studies with metabolic outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the longitudinal association between consumption of UPF, adiposity, and metabolic indicators in Chilean preschool children. Methods We conducted a prospective analysis of 962 children enrolled in the Food and Environment Chilean Cohort (FECHIC). Dietary data were collected in 2016 at age 4 years with 24-h recalls. All reported foods and beverages were classified according to the NOVA food classification, and the usual consumption of UPF in calories and grams was estimated using the Multiple Source Method. Adiposity (z-score of body mass index [BMI z-score], waist circumference [WC], and fat mass [in kg and percentage]) and metabolic indicators (fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and cholesterol fractions) were measured in 2018, at the age of 6 years. Linear regression models ((0) crude, (1) adjusted for covariables, and (2) adjusted for covariables plus total caloric intake) were used to evaluate the association between UPF and outcomes. All models included inverse probability weights to account for the loss to the follow-up. Results At 4 years, usual consumption of UPF represented 48% of the total calories and 39% of the total food and beverages grams. In models adjusted for covariables plus caloric intake, we found a positive association between UPF and BMI z-score (for 100 kcal and 100 g, respectively: b = 0.24 [95%CI 0.16–0.33]; b = 0.21 [95%CI 0.10–0.31]), WC in cm (b = 0.89 [95%CI 0.41–1.37]; b = 0.86 [95%CI 0.32–1.40]), log-fat mass in kg b = 0.06 [95%CI 0.03–0.09]; b = 0.04 [95%CI 0.01–0.07]), and log-percentage fat mass (b = 0.03 [95%CI 0.01–0.04]; b = 0.02 [95%CI 0.003–0.04]), but no association with metabolic indicators. Conclusions In this sample of Chilean preschoolers, we observed that higher consumption of UPF was associated with adiposity indicators 2 years later, but not with metabolic outcomes. Longer follow-up might help clarify the natural history of UPF consumption and metabolic risks in children.

Abstract Background Fruit consumption has been associated with a lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. We investigated the cross-sectional and prospective associations of fruit consumption with markers of adiposity, blood pressure, lipids, low-grade inflammation, glycaemia, and oxidative stress. Methods The main analyses included 365 534 middle-aged adults from the UK Biobank at baseline, of whom 11 510, and 38 988 were included in the first and second follow-up respectively, free from CVD and cancer at baseline. Fruit consumption frequency at baseline was assessed using a questionnaire. We assessed the cross-sectional and prospective associations of fruit with adiposity (body mass index, waist circumference and %body fat), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, lipids (low-density and high-density lipoproteins, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B), glycaemia (haemoglobin A1c), low-grade inflammation (C-reactive protein) and oxidative stress (gamma-glutamyl-transferase) using linear regression models adjusted for socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. Analyses were repeated in a subset with two to five complete 24-h dietary assessments (n = 26 596) allowing for adjustment for total energy intake. Results Fruit consumption at baseline generally showed weak inverse associations with adiposity and biomarkers at baseline. Most of these relationships did not persist through follow-up, except for inverse associations with diastolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein, gamma-glutamyl transferase and adiposity. Abstract Background The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is linked to both the development and progression of diabetes, while obesity remains a significant risk factor for this disease. However, the relationship between the TyG index and overweight or obese diabetes remains unclear. Methods This study was a cross-sectional analysis of data from 40,633 participants with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 24 kg/m2 who were screened from January 2018 to December 2023 at Henan Provincial People’s Hospital. Participants were divided into groups of overweight or obese individuals with diabetes and those without diabetes according to the diabetes diagnostic criteria. The TyG index, the dependent variable, was determined using the equation ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2]. We explored the association between TyG index and diabetes in overweight or obese individuals through multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, generalized additive models, smoothed curve fitting, and analysis of threshold effects. Results Patients who were overweight or obese and had diabetes had higher TyG index levels than those without diabetes. After adjusting for confounders, our findings indicated a significant association between the TyG index and the risk of diabetes in overweight or obese individuals [odds ratio (OR) = 7.38, 95% confidence interval (CI): 6.98–7.81]. There was a J-shaped nonlinear association between TyG index and diabetes. When TyG index was > 4.46, the risk of diabetes increased sharply. Notably, a high baseline TyG index (Q4 group) correlated with a notably greater risk of diabetes than did the Q1 group, with an OR of 22.72 (95% CI: 20.52–25.16). Subgroup analysis revealed that the association between TyG and diabetes was stronger in females than in males (OR = 7.57, 95% CI: 6.76–8.48,), more significant in individuals with a BMI of 24–28 kg/m2 than in those with a BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 (OR = 8.40, 95% CI: 7.83–9.02), and increased with age (OR = 8.15, 95% CI: 7.25–9.17) (all P for interaction 4.46. Furthermore, factors such as sex, age, and BMI significantly influence the risk of diabetes in overweight or obese individuals. Specifically, older women with a BMI of 24–28 kg/m2 are at a greater risk of diabetes under similar TyG index conditions.

Abstract Introduction Pre-frailty provides an ideal opportunity to prevent physical frailty and promote healthy ageing. Excess adiposity has been associated with an increased risk of pre-frailty, but limited studies have explored whether the association between adiposity measures and pre-frailty varies by social position. Methods We used data from the seventh survey of the Tromsø Study (Tromsø7) conducted in 2015–2016. Our primary sample consisted of 2,945 women and 2,794 men aged ≥ 65 years. Pre-frailty was defined as the presence of one or two of the five frailty components: low grip strength, slow walking speed, exhaustion, unintentional weight loss and low physical activity. Adiposity was defined by body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fat mass index (FMI) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass. Education and subjective social position were used as measures of social position. Poisson regression with robust variance was used to assess the association between adiposity measures and pre-frailty, and the interaction term between adiposity measures and social position measures were utilised to explore whether the association varied by social position. Results In our sample, 28.7% of women and 25.5% of men were pre-frail. We found sub-multiplicative interaction of BMI-defined obesity with education in women and subjective social position in men with respect to development of pre-frailty. No other adiposity measures showed significant variation by education or subjective social position. Regardless of the levels of education or subjective social position, participants with excess adiposity (high BMI, high WC, high FMI and high VAT mass) had a higher risk of pre-frailty compared to those with low adiposity. Conclusion We consistently observed that women and men with excess adiposity had a greater risk of pre-frailty than those with low adiposity, with only slight variation by social position. These results emphasize the importance of preventing excess adiposity to promote healthy ageing and prevent frailty among all older adults across social strata.

Heart failure (HF) management guidelines recommend individualized assessments based on HF phenotypes. Adiposity is a known risk factor for HF. Recently, there has been an increased interest in organ-specific adiposity, specifically the role of the epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), in HF risk. EAT is easily assessable through various imaging modalities and is anatomically and functionally connected to the myocardium. In pathological conditions, EAT secretes inflammatory cytokines, releases excessive fatty acids, and increases mechanical load on the myocardium, resulting in myocardial remodeling. EAT plays a pathophysiological role in characterizing both HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). In HFrEF, EAT volume is reduced, reflecting an impaired metabolic reservoir, whereas in HFpEF, the amount of EAT is associated with worse biomarker and hemodynamic profiles, indicating increased EAT activity. Studies have examined the possibility of therapeutically targeting EAT, and recent studies using sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors have shown potential in reducing EAT volume. However, further research is required to determine the clinical implications of reducing EAT activity in patients with HF.

Three domains, emotional eating (EE), uncontrolled eating (UE), and cognitive restraint (CR) were examined as outcomes as well as predictors of adiposity outcomes. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were adjusted for age, education, lifestyle factors, and dieting behavior.Results: All TFEQ domains were positively associated with dieting. EE and UE were associated with higher consumption of sweets and CR with lower consumption of sweets. Wellbeing was negatively associated with EE and UE. In mutually adjusted models, EE and CR but not UE were positively associated with BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and skinfold. One standard deviation higher EE was associated with obesity, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, OR = 1.62 (1.26, 2.10), and abdominal fatness, WC > 88 cm, OR = 1.57 (1.26, 1.95). Former and current dieting were positively associated with these outcomes, too, but UE and CR were not associated in mutually adjusted models.Conclusion: This study shows that emotional eating behavior is associated with adiposity in a population of middle-aged women, over a large range of values for body fatness, and independent of dieting behavior. ABSTRACT Background The interaction between physical activity, skeletal muscle health, and adiposity has been explored in normal weight and overweight/obesity grouped together; however, the overall risks associated with being overweight are less than those observed with obesity and can be confounded by disparities in both sex and race. Thus, the present study sought to investigate the intricate interplay of daily physical activity and skeletal muscle oxidative capacity (SMOC) in overweight and obesity, while exploring how sex and race impact this dynamic relationship. Background The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased fastest in low- and middle-income countries in the last decades. Together with this rising prevalence, pharmacological and surgical interventions for obesity have emerged. How many people need these treatments is unknown. We quantified the prevalence of people in need of pharmacological and surgical treatment for obesity in Peru between 2014 and 2022. Methods Repeated cross-sectional analysis of national health surveys in Peru was conducted. Eligibility for pharmacological treatment for obesity was: body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 or BMI ≥27 kg/m2 alongside type 2 diabetes or hypertension (self-reported). Eligibility for bariatric surgery were BMI ≥40 kg/m2 or BMI between 35 to 39.9 kg/m2 linked to weight-related health problems. We used Poisson regressions to identify associated factors with eligibility for obesity management. Results Across years, 260,131 people (mean age 44.0 and 54.5% were women) were studied, 66,629 (27.7%; 95% CI: 27.4% - 28.1%) were eligible for obesity medication, and 5,263 (2.5%; 95% CI: 2.4% - 2.6%) were eligible for bariatric surgery. Female sex, older age, higher socioeconomic level and study year were associated with higher probability of eligibility for both obesity medication and bariatric surgery. Conclusions Eligibility for obesity management has increased over time in Peru. There is a need to strengthen policies to tackle overweight and obesity in Peru, acknowledging that some individuals may benefit from pharmacological and surgical interventions.

Background We evaluated how elevated blood pressure in children exposed to preeclampsia (PE) impacted on their cardiac structure and function, as well as relations with maternal, gestational, and perinatal factors and child body size and composition. Methods and Results A total of 182 PE (46 early‐onset preeclampsia) and 85 unexposed (non‐PE) children were examined in the FINNCARE study 8 to 12 years after the index pregnancy with echocardiography; office, central, and 24‐hour ambulatory blood pressures; and body anthropometrics and composition. PE children had lower right ventricular basal sphericity index (mean difference, −0.26 95% CI, −0.39 to −0.12) and lower mitral lateral E′‐wave peak velocity (−1.4 cm/s [95% CI, −2.1 to −0.6]), as well as higher E to E′ ratio (0.40 [95% CI, 0.15–0.65]) and indexed tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (0.03 [95% CI, 0.01–0.05]) compared with non‐PE children. These differences were accentuated in early‐onset PE children. Left ventricular mass (LVM) or left atrial volume were not different between PE and non‐PE children. Lean body mass, body fat percentage, and 24‐hour systolic blood pressure were independent predictors of LVM. Lean body mass and body fat percentage were independent predictors of left atrial volume. No significant associations between LVM or left atrial volume and maternal, gestational, or perinatal parameters were found. Conclusions Preadolescent PE children display a more globular‐shaped right ventricle with higher longitudinal systolic displacement as well as mildly altered diastolic indices, with the alterations being pronounced in early‐onset preeclampsia. Lean body mass and adiposity are independently related with LVM and left atrial volume, and systolic blood pressure with LVM in both PE and non‐PE children. These unfavorable associations indicate remodeling of cardiac structure in young children also reflected in mild functional changes in PE children. Background: Deteriorated sinusitis and increased adiposity relative to muscle mass may affect quality of life in patients with asthma. However, whether these effects are observed regardless of intrapulmonary pathology is unknown. Objectives: We evaluated the correlation of the cross-sectional ratio of abdominal visceral fat (VF) to erector spinae muscle (ESM) and sinus findings based on Lund-Mackey scoring system (LMS) on computed tomography (CT) with the impaired score of the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ), regardless of airway and parenchymal disease, in patients with asthma. Methods: We recruited participants from the Hokkaido-based severe asthma cohort who had completed AQLQ and CT examination at the entry. The participants were divided into high (highest) and low (other quartiles) groups on the bases of the extrapulmonary indices. Multivariate analysis examined the association of VF/ESM for the adiposity-to-muscle ratio and LMS with AQLQ after adjusting for the airway fractal dimension for airway index and percentage of low attenuation volume to lung volume for parenchymal index. Results: No significant differences were observed in VF/ESM and LMS in terms of sex. The AQLQ score in the high VF/ESM group and high LMS group was lower than those in low VF/ESM group and low LMS group (63 male and 100 female subjects). High VF/ESM (estimate [95% confidence interval] (−0.43 [−0.61, −0.25]) and high LMS scores (−0.22 [−0.41, −0.03]) were associated with low AQLQ scores when adjusted for age, body mass index, smoking status, blood eosinophil count, and intrapulmonary CT indices. Conclusions: Increased VF relative to ESM mass and high LMS may deteriorate asthma-related quality of life, regardless of presence of intrapulmonary disease.

Moreover, we investigated the most reliable adiposity measure for discriminating people with T2DM from those without in clinical settings.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from the database of Qatar Biobank (QBB), which comprised adults with a previous diagnosis of T2DM mellitus in Qatar. t–test and multivariable linear regression models were used to assess the association between T2DM and the difference in DEXA and BMI adiposity measures. Moreover, an evaluation of the odds of abnormal waist-hip ratio in participants with T2DM using an adjusted multivariable logistic regression was conducted.Results: Among the participants with T2DM, males had less fat in the leg region, while females had less fat in the legs and gynoid regions, compared to individuals without T2DM. Females with T2DM had a higher average BMI. Moreover, the odds of having an abnormal waist-to-hip ratio were higher in males and females with T2DM compared to persons without T2DM.Conclusion: There were different patterns of fat deposition in males and females with T2DM. T2DM was associated with a higher BMI in females only. The odds of abnormal waist-hip ratio were higher in individuals with T2DM of both genders. Abstract Background We assessed the association of hedonic hunger, self-control (impulsivity and restraint), cognitive distortion (CD), and well-being with adiposity measures such as waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body mass index (BMI), total body fat (TBF), subcutaneous fat (SF), visceral fat level (VFL), skeletal muscle percentage (SM), and resting metabolism (RM), among a sample of urban Malaysian adults at Sunway University and Sunway College, Selangor, Malaysia. Methods Among 186 participants (M/F = 51/135; aged 22.1 ± 5.0), psychometrics were assessed using Power of Food Scale (PFS), Brief Self-Control Scale, CD Questionnaire (CD-Quest), and WHO-5 Well-being Index. Blood pressures, anthropometrics and body compositions were also measured using standard methods and bioimpedance. Results Men had significantly higher well-being, but lower overall self-control, impulsivity and Food Available hedonic hunger. Those with moderate/severe CD had higher odds ratio (OR) of having high central adiposity, compared with those with absent/slight CD (OR: 2.52;95% CI: 1.14, 5.61; p = 0.023 for WC and OR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.19, 5.23; p = 0.015 for WHR). Higher CD and PFS scores were strongly significantly correlated with higher systolic blood pressure (SBP), WC, WHR, WHtR, BMI, TBF, SF, VFL and RM. Lower self-control was weakly correlated with higher WC, while lower impulsivity and restraint were weakly correlated with higher VFL. Those who were overweight, obese, and in high TBF class had significantly higher PFS Aggregate Factor scores. Food Available and Food Present scores, but not Food Tasted, were also significantly higher among overweight participants. Conclusions Higher hedonic hunger and CD were associated with higher SBP and all adiposity measures. Overweight participants had higher hedonic hunger in the context of ready availability and physical presence of highly palatable foods. Lower self-control was weakly correlated with higher central adiposity; lower impulsivity and restraint were weakly correlated with higher visceral adiposity. These findings have provided some insights into the cognitive factors underlying adiposity.

Abstract Background Obesity is a classified risk factor for several of the world’s leading causes of death. In this study, we combined information contained in body mass index (BMI), total percentage body fat (TPBF) and relative fat mass (RFM) to estimate obesity prevalence and examine the risk factors associated with obesity. Methods The study recruited 1027 undergraduate students aged between 16 and 25 years using a cross-sectional study design and two-stage stratified random sampling between January and April 2019 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. Demographic, lifestyle, and family history of chronic disease data, were collected using a structured questionnaire. Bioelectrical impedance, along with height, weight, age, and gender, were used to estimate BMI and TPBF. The RFM was calculated using a published equation. The TPBF and RFM ranges were evaluated based on standard BMI thresholds and an informative combined obesity prevalence estimated in a Bayesian framework. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate potential risk factors of overweight/obesity. Results Concordance between BMI, TPBF and RFM for obesity classification was 84% among female and 82.9% among male students. The Bayesian analysis revealed a combined prevalence means of obesity of 9.4% (95%CI: 6.9-12.2%) among female students and 6.7% (95%CI:4.3-9.5%) among male students. The odds of obesity were increased between 1.8 and 2.5 for females depending on the classification index. A significant increasing trend of obesity was observed with university-level. A family history of obesity was associated with a high estimate of general, central, and high TPBF. Conclusion Using multiple adiposity indicators conjointly in a Bayesian framework offers a greater power to examine obesity prevalence. We have applied this and reported high obesity prevalence, especially among female students. University level and family history of obesity were key determinants for obesity among the student population.

Abstract Childhood obesity is linked to diverse health outcomes, including elevated blood pressure (EBP). Emerging evidence showed that excess fat mass (FM) may have a deleterious impact on blood pressure even in normal-weight children. The primary objective of this study was to assess the association between body weight status by BMI z-score and body composition parameters by conventional bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA). Also, we aimed to explore the performance of BMI z-score, %FM, and FM index (FMI) in discriminating EBP in a sample of school-age Mexican children. Children were classified as having normal weight, overweight or obesity according to WHO criteria for BMI z-score. FMI was considered high when above 75th percentile, and fat free mass index (FFMI) was considered low when below 25th percentile of the reference population. Body composition was also classified according to the BIVA method and EBP was determined when systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90th percentile. BMI z-score groups were compared by Student´s t-test or the Mann–Whitney U test, or by the chi-square test or Fisher exact test. Receiving operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed. 61 children were included (52.5% boys, median age 9.8 (25th, 75th percentiles: 8.5, 11.0)) years. High FMI was observed in 32.3% of children with normal weight. Low FFMI was present in 93.5% of children with normal weight and 53.3% of those with overweight/obesity. According to BIVA, 58.1% and 43.3% of children with normal weight and overweight/obesity were classified as having cachexia. All the three adiposity indicators showed significant areas under the ROC curve (AURC) greater than 0.775 for EBP, with the largest one displayed for FM% (0.794). Hight FMI and low FFMI are common in children with normal weight. Identifying deficiency of FFM might be limited by using solely BMI indicators. Cachexia by BIVA was present in a high proportion of children with either normal weight or overweight/obesity. Both BMI z-score and FM (% and FMI) performed well at discriminating EBP, with a numerically greater AURC observed for FM%. Body composition in pediatric population is relevant for identifying body composition abnormalities at early age.

Abstract Background A growing body of evidence suggests that obesity can affect cognitive function. However, it is unclear whether this effect is independent of obesity-related comorbidities. This study thus sought to determine the association between body composition and cognitive function of young adults in Ghana with less predisposition to obesity-related comorbidities. Methods A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 381 participants recruited by simple random sampling. After consenting, participants completed questionnaires that assessed sociodemographic characteristics, along with assessments for anthropometric measures and cognitive function. Analyses for associations were conducted by either Pearson’s correlation test or chi-Square test of independence. Results Over half (60%) of participants were females and 69.6% were in the first year with a mean age of 20.18 ± 2.52 years. Based on Pearson’s correlation test, no significant association was found between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR), and Trail Making Test-A and B (TMT-A and TMT-B). Nonetheless, a chi-square test showed a significant association, between BMI and TMT-A (p = 0.01), and WHR and both TMT-A (p = 0.001) and TMT-B (p = 0.02). Weak direct correlations were found between body fat percentage and TMT-A (r = 0.120, p = 0.019) and TMT-B (r = 0.133, p = 0.009). Further, a weak inverse correlation was found between muscle mass and TMT-A (r = − 0.141, p = 0.006) and TMT-B (r = − 0.144, p = 0.005). Conclusion High body fat, low muscle mass and body fat distribution may have a significant association with cognitive functions and must be considered in obesity interventions. This study provided more insight on the association between BMI and cognitive function and would be helpful in designing new weight management interventions or modifying existing interventions to consider the influence of obesity on cognitive function.

Purpose We prospectively evaluated the association of the insulin resistance of third-trimester Nigerian pregnant women with their newborn infants' insulin resistance and birth size. Pregnancy-associated insulin resistance (IR), often assessed with homeostatic model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR), is associated, especially among women with gestational diabetes (GDM), with abnormal neonatal birth size and body composition, predisposing the baby to metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity. The associations of maternal IR with neonatal IR, birth size and body composition are less studied in nondiabetic pregnant women, especially in sub-Saharan settings like Nigeria. Methods We originally recruited 401 third trimester, nondiabetic pregnant women to a prospective cohort study, followed up until birth. Blood samples of mothers and babies were obtained, respectively, at recruitment and within 24 hours postbirth for fasting serum glucose (FSG) and insulin (FSI) assays, and HOMA-IR was calculated as [(FSI × FSG)/22.5)]. Results Complete data for 150 mother-baby dyads was analysed: the mothers, with a mean (standard deviation [SD]) age of 31.6 (4.5) years, had live births at a mean (SD) gestational age of 39.2 weeks. The proportions of infants with wasting, stunting, impaired fetal growth (either wasting or stunted), small-for-gestation-age, large-for-gestational-age, low birthweight, and macrosomia were 4.2% (95% confidence interval, 1.1–10.3), 19.7% (12.9–28.0), 23.1% (15.8–31.8), 10.1% (5.3–17.0), 12.6% (7.2–19.9), 0.8% (0.02–4.5), and 5.0% (1.8–10.5), respectively. Maternal HOMA-IR was not associated with neonatal HOMA-IR (p=0.837), birth weight (p=0.416) or body composition measured with weight-length ratio (p=0.524), but birth weight was independently predicted by maternal weight (p=0.006), body mass index (p=0.001), and parity (p=0.012). Conclusions In this nondiabetic/non-GDM cohort, maternal HOMA-IR was not associated with neonatal IR, body size or body composition. Larger studies are required to confirm these findings, with addi-tional inclusion of mothers with hyperglycaemia for comparison.

AbstractAim This cross-sectional study investigated the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and handgrip strength (HGS) with respect to sex and adiposity in Saudi men (n = 287) and women (n = 268).Material and methods Anthropometry, body composition, HGS, and blood biochemistry were measured. The average age of the study population was 57.65 ± 9.3 years (men = 55.1 ± 9.3 years, women = 60.4 ± 9.3 years). We report that HGS/body mass index (BMI), HGS/weight, and HGS/fat (%) were significantly higher in controls than in patients with MetS in men but not in women. BackgroundAdipose tissue (AT) wasting in cancer is an early catabolic event with negative impact on outcomes. Circulating miRNAs may promote body weight loss and cachexia. We measured circulating miRNAs linked to AT alterations and compared their levels between i) gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients and controls, ii) cachectic and non-cachectic cancer patients, and iii) according to adiposity level and its distribution.MethodsPatients with GI cancer and subjects with benign diseases as controls were considered. Cachexia was assessed and adiposity evaluated by CT-scan for subcutaneous AT area (SAT), visceral AT area and the total AT area (TAT). MiRNAs involved were measured in plasma by RT-qPCR.Results37 naïve GI cancer patients and 14 controls were enrolled. Patients with cachexia presented with lower SAT compared to non-cachectic (p < 0.05). In cancer patients, we found higher levels of miR-26a, miR-128, miR-155 and miR-181a vs. controls (p < 0.05). Cancer patients with BMI < 25 kg/m2 showed higher levels of miR-26a vs. those with BMI ≥ 25 (p = 0.035). MiR-26a and miR-181a were higher in cachectic and non-cachectic vs. controls (p < 0.05). Differences between cachectic and controls were confirmed for miR-155 (p < 0.001) but not between non-cachectic vs. control (p = 0.072). MiR-155 was higher in cachectic patients with low TAT vs. those without cachexia and high TAT (p = 0.036).ConclusionOur data confirm a modulation of specific and different miRNAs involved in AT metabolism in cancer and cachexia. MiR-155 levels were higher in patients presenting with cachexia and low adiposity with implications in the pathogenic mechanisms and clinical consequences of GI cancer patients.

Introduction: Obesity is a major risk factor associated with multiple pathological conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Endothelial dysfunction is an early predictor of obesity. However, little is known regarding how early endothelial changes trigger obesity. In the present work we report a novel endothelial-mediated mechanism essential for regulation of metabolic homeostasis, driven by c-Myc.Methods: We used conditional knockout (EC-Myc KO) and overexpression (EC-Myc OE) mouse models to investigate the endothelial-specific role of c-Myc in metabolic homeostasis during aging and high-fat diet exposure. Body weight and metabolic parameters were collected over time and tissue samples collected at endpoint for biochemical, pathology and RNA-sequencing analysis. Animals exposed to high-fat diet were also evaluated for cardiac dysfunction.Results: In the present study we demonstrate that EC-Myc KO triggers endothelial dysfunction, which precedes progressive increase in body weight during aging, under normal dietary conditions. At endpoint, EC-Myc KO animals showed significant increase in white adipose tissue mass relative to control littermates, which was associated with sex-specific changes in whole body metabolism and increase in systemic leptin. Overexpression of endothelial c-Myc attenuated diet-induced obesity and visceral fat accumulation and prevented the development of glucose intolerance and cardiac dysfunction. Transcriptome analysis of skeletal muscle suggests that the protective effects promoted by endothelial c-Myc overexpression are associated with the expression of genes known to increase weight loss, energy expenditure and glucose tolerance.Conclusion: Our results show a novel important role for endothelial c-Myc in regulating metabolic homeostasis and suggests its potential targeting in preventing obesity and associated complications such as diabetes type-2 and cardiovascular dysfunction.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between visceral adiposity and the possible etiologies of acute pancreatitis. Obesity creates low-grade inflammation and evidence supports an association between obesity and inflammatory conditions such as pancreatitis. CT imaging is utilized in assessing pancreatitis severity and complications but also offers the chance to quantitatively measure visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA). Given the metabolic role that fat plays, we hypothesized that different body fat distributions, as measured by these areas, may be associated with different etiologies. Further, this also allows us to explore a relationship between severity, etiology, and the fat distributions in patients with acute pancreatitis. Method: Retrospective observational cohort study of all patients admitted to a single center. The VFA, SFA, their ratio (VFA/SFA) and total fat area (TFA) were calculated using a semi-automatic algorithm. Results: 518 patients were admitted with acute pancreatitis over a three-year period. 177 patients underwent CT imaging. Gallstone pancreatitis patients had higher VFA and TFA measurements while alcoholic pancreatitis patients had lower measurements. Patients with pancreatitis with no clear cause had the lowest VFA/SFA ratio. Increasing VFA was associated with increasing severity in a univariate logistic regression model (p = 0.01) but this association diminished in a multivariate model accounting for etiology (p = 0.09). Conclusion: The pattern of fat distribution differs amongst the etiologies of acute pancreatitis, as this likely reflects multiple contributing pathogenic mechanisms. Patients with gallstone pancreatitis had disproportionately more visceral fat, alcohol had the least overall fat, and those without a clear cause had the lowest VFA/SFA ratio. Etiology is strongly associated with body fat distribution. Severity is associated with increased visceral fat, but much less so when etiology is controlled for. The radiological assessment of fat distribution thus can give clues to associated etiology.

Accumulation of visceral adipose tissue is associated with metabolic syndrome (MS), insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Here we examined several morphometric and biochemical parameters linked to MS in a rodent litter size reduction model, and how a 30-day fish oil (FO) supplementation affected these parameters. On day 3 post-birth, pups were divided into groups of ten or three. On day 22, rats were split into control (C) and small litter (SL) until 60 days old. Then, after metabolic disturbance and obesity were confirmed, FO supplementation started for 30 days and the new groups were named control (C), FO supplemented (FO), obese (Ob), and obese FO supplemented (ObFO). Comparison was performed by Student t-test or 2-way ANOVA followed by Tukey post hoc test. At the end of the 60-day period, SL rats were hyperphagic, obese, hypoinsulinemic, normoglycemic, and had high visceral fat depot and high interleukin (IL)-6 plasma concentration. Obese rats at 90 days of age were fatter, hyperphagic, hyperglycemic, hypertriacylgliceromic, hipoinsulinemic, with low innate immune response. IL-6 production ex vivo was higher, but in plasma it was not different from the control group. FO supplementation brought all biochemical changes to normal values, normalized food intake, and reduced body weight and fat mass in obese rats. The innate immune response was improved but still not as efficient as in lean animals. Our results suggested that as soon MS appears, FO supplementation must be used to ameliorate the morpho- and biochemical effects caused by MS and improve the innate immune response.

IntroductionPhysical inactivity and sedentary behaviour are linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, infections and dementia, as well as placing a significant economic burden on healthcare systems. The implementation of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown measures aimed at reducing virus transmission posed challenges to the opportunity to be physically active. This study investigates how the first UK COVID-19 lockdown affected objectively measured physical activity in older adults at higher risk of cardiovascular disease.MethodsWe studied 48 individuals aged 55-74 years (81.3% female) with self-reported PA levels < 90 min/week and a QRISK2 score ≥ 10 (indicative of a ≥ 10% risk of a major cardiovascular event in the next 10 years) without mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Physical activity data was collected using objective wrist-based activity monitors and analysed across three time periods, usual activity (pre-pandemic), the precautionary phase when the UK began advising on limiting social contact and finally during the first UK lockdown period was collected (27 January 2020 and 07 June 2020). Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is characterised by chronic hyperglycaemia due to abnormal insulin secretion and/or utilisation. Currently, sarcopenia has emerged as a new complication of T2DM, which increases the risk of physical disability, and even death. The study aims to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) as well as their association with various other factors related to T2DM. Methods: The study was an observational hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted among diabetic patients who came to the non-communicable diseases (NCD) clinic of a tertiary care hospital in Gujarat, India, from April 2023 to June 2023. Adult patients with T2DM attending follow-ups were included, with a diagnosis of T2DM for at least 1 year from the date of their electronic medical records, regardless of their mode of therapeutic treatment. They were on regular medical reviews with two or more visits to the study site in the past 1 year. Then a self-structured standard questionnaire was used to collect the data, containing socio-demographic characteristics, clinical profiles, anthropometric assessment (comprising weight, height and body mass index [BMI]), bio-impedance indices like body fat%, skeletal muscle% and handgrip by hand dynamometer. Results: In the study, a total of 404 participants participated. Their mean age was 55 ± 13.5 years and their mean body fat (BF) % was 30 ± 7.4%. BF%-defined obesity was found in 260 (64.4%) participants. A total of 362 (89.6%) had possible sarcopenia, 183 (45.3%) had sarcopenia and 124 (30.7%) had SO. Age (OR: 2.6, CI: 1.7–3.9), duration of diabetes for more than 7 years (OR: 7.5, CI: 3.65–15.4) and BF%-defined obesity (OR: 2.2, CI: 3.6–15) were statistically associated with Sarcopenia, in similar pattern age (OR: 2.4, CI: 1.5–3.7), and duration of diabetes more than 7 years (OR: 18.9, CI: 5.7–62) were associated with SO (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Older age, longer diabetes duration and BF%-defined obesity are associated with an increased likelihood of developing sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity. Healthcare providers should prioritise regular screening for sarcopenia and SO in elderly individuals with diabetes to facilitate early detection and intervention.

Abstract Background Adiponectin is an anti-inflammatory cytokine secreted by adipose tissue, has been associated with adiposity and cardiometabolic risk, and has controversial results with muscular fitness. The aim of this study was to analyze the interaction of 1-minute abdominal test in the relationship between adiposity, body composition, cardiometabolic risk and adiponectin concentration in adolescents. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 62 adolescents of both sexes, aged 11 to 16 years, approved by the Ethics Committee of Research in Humans (CAEE: 62963916.0.0000.5223). Body mass, height, abdominal circumference (AC), waist circumference (WC), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), high density lipoprotein (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein (LDL-c), triglycerides (TG), adiponectin, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean blood pressure (MBP), 1-minute abdominal test (ABD) were measured. Body mass index (BMI), z-score BMI (BMI-z), triponderal mass index (TMI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were calculated. The macro PROCESS for SPSS v.24.0 was used for moderation analyses, with linear regression models. Results Inverse interactions were found for adiposity (BMI, BMI-z, TMI, AC, WC, WHtR), body composition (FM, FFM) and CMRF (SBP, DBP, MBP, TG) versus 1-minute abdominal test with adiponectin concentration, demonstrating that abdominal test is a moderator in these relationships. Conclusion We conclude that 1-minute abdominal test may play an important role in the relationship between obesity and cardiometabolic risk. We found that muscular fitness can confer a protective effect on adolescents with high levels of abdominal test.

Objectives: It has not been established whether vitamin D deficiency is associated with anthropometric state; therefore, this systematic review examined the relationship between serum vitamin D levels with anthropometrics and adiposity across different ages. Methods: Studies that examined vitamin D deficiency with adiposity measures in different age groups were searched in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar databases until November 2023. Two investigators independently reviewed titles and abstracts, examined full-text articles, extracted data, and rated the quality in accordance with the Newcastle–Ottawa criteria. Results: Seventy-two studies, with a total of 59,430 subjects, were included. Of these studies, 27 cross-sectional studies and one longitudinal study (with 25,615 participants) evaluated the possible link between 25(OH)D serum concentrations and anthropometric/adiposity indices in the pediatric population. Forty-two cross-sectional studies and two cohort investigations (with 33,815 participants) investigated the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and adiposity measures in adults and/or the elderly population. There is evidence supporting links between vitamin D deficiency and obesity, and revealed an inverse association between vitamin D and adiposity indicators, specifically in female subjects. However, the effects of several confounding factors should also be considered. Conclusion: Most published studies, most of which were cross-sectional, reported a negative association between vitamin D and female adiposity indicators. Therefore, serum vitamin D levels should be monitored in overweight/ obese individuals.

Abstract Background Adiposity and elevated inflammation are two hallmarks of hyperglycemia. However, it is unknown whether clustering of elevated inflammation and adiposity interact act on diabetogenesis and lead to a greater risk for incident type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods Adiposity was indicated by body mass index, waist circumference and ultrasonography-measured fatty liver degrees. Elevated inflammation was indicated as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels ≥ 2 mg/L. Time-to-event survival analyses were conducted to investigate the joint effect of adiposity and inflammation on incident T2D on both multiplicative and additive scales. Results Among 82,172 non-diabetic participants from a prospective cohort in China, 14,278 T2D occurred over a median follow-up of 11 years. In the multivariable-adjusted model, elevated inflammation [1.12 (1.08‒1.16)] and adiposity [1.76 (1.69‒1.83) for overweight/obesity, 1.49 (1.44‒1.55) for central obesity, and 2.02 (1.95‒2.09) for fatty liver] were significantly associated with incident diabetes. Higher adiposity-associated risks and incidence rates of diabetes were observed with elevated inflammation. When studying the joint effect, the adjusted HRs were 1.77 (1.69‒1.85) for overweight/obesity, 1.14 (1.06‒1.23) for elevated inflammation, and 2.08 (1.97‒2.19) for their joint effect, with a relative excess risk due to interaction of 0.17 (0.05‒0.28). The attributable proportions were 71.30% for overweight/obesity, 12.96% for elevated inflammation, and 15.74% for their interaction. Similar results were observed when adiposity was assessed as waist circumference or fatty liver. Conclusions Adiposity and elevated inflammation synergically lead to greater risks of incident diabetes than addition of each individual exposure. Strategies simultaneously targeting both risks should produce more benefits for diabetes prevention than through initiatives directed at each separate risk.

To verify the role of the combination of fitness and fatness in the relationship between physical activity (PA) and cardiometabolic risk in children and adolescents. This is a cross-sectional study performed with 2786 children and adolescents (6 to 17 years). Fitness was determined by the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) six-minute walking and running test. Waist circumference (WC) was considered a fatness indicator. A self-reported questionnaire was used to determine PA practice, whereas the clustered cardiometabolic risk score (cMetS) wascalculated by summing z-scores of triglycerides, totalcholesterol/HDL-C ratio,systolic blood pressure, glucose, and WC. Considering the combination of CRF (fitness) and WC (fatness), the following phenotypes were created: Fit/Unfat, Fit/Fat, Unfit/Unfat and Unfit/Fat. Moderation analyses were tested using linear regression models. Significant interactions were found between PA and Unfit/Fat category (β = -0.001; p = 0.001) only for adolescents. The interaction observed in the Unfit/Fat phenotype indicated that adolescents who practise PA for 330 minutes per week presented lower cMetS compared to those who do not practise or practise for 60 minutes respectively. The combination of fitness and fatness moderates the relationship between PA and cardiometabolic risk, suggesting that adolescents, particularly those who are less fit and present high adiposity, should be encouraged to engage in regular PA to improve their metabolic health.

Abstract Background We evaluated the independent associations of body composition measures on left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and pulse wave arterial stiffness index (PWASI). Methods The present analysis included 23,258 individuals (mean age 63 years, 53% women) who participated in the whole body imaging sub-study of the UK Biobank. Associations of body composition measures with each of LVEF and PWASI, after mutual adjustment for one another and potential confounders, were determined using multivariable linear regression. Results Among regional body fat measures, higher visceral fat (VAT) was associated with lower LVEF (β = − 0.45; 95% CI − 0.60, − 0.31 per SD) and higher PWASI (β = 0.51; 95% CI 0.38–0.65 per SD). The association between VAT and LVEF was negatively linear but positively linear for PWASI throughout the range of VAT measured. Other regional fat measures and fat-free mass were not significantly associated with either LVEF or PWASI. Central adiposity measures (waist circumference [WC] and waist–hip ratio [WHR]) showed significant inverse association with LVEF (WC: β = − 0.11; 95% CI − 0.21, − 0.01 per SD; WHR β = − 0.25; 95% CI − 0.38, − 0.12 per SD) but positive association with PWASI (WC: β = 0.37; 95% CI 0.28–0.47 per SD; WHR β = 0.39; 95% CI 0.27 − 0.51 per SD) while BMI was not significantly associated with LVEF (β = 0.05; 95% CI − 0.04, 0.14 per SD) but showed weaker positive association with PWASI (β = 0.27; 95% CI 0.18–0.35 per SD). Conclusions Excess visceral fat and central adiposity are associated with impaired LV function and increased arterial stiffness which may predispose to heart failure.

Abstract Objective: To conduct a systematic review of obesity prevention interventions in Latinx children ages birth to 6 years published in any language from 2010–2020. Design: We used PubMed, ERIC, PsycINFO, Scopus, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Google Scholar databases to conduct a search on May 1 2020, January 1 2021 and November 1 2022. We included randomised controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies and non-randomised interventions with a control or comparison group that reported measures of adiposity. Setting: Interventions taking place in the United States, Latin America or the Caribbean. Participants: Latinx children ages birth to 6 years. Results: Of 8601 unique records identified, forty manuscripts about thirty-nine unique studies describing thirty distinct interventions in the United States and nine interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean met our inclusion criteria. Interventions were primarily based in early care and education centres (n 13) or combined home settings, for example home and community (n 7). Randomised interventions taking place in community or home settings were more likely to report significant reductions in adiposity or weight-related outcomes compared to other settings. Using the Cochrane risk of bias tools for randomised and non-randomised studies, we judged thirty-eight randomised trials and nine non-randomised interventions to have a high or unclear risk of bias. Conclusions: The results highlight a need for more rigorous designs and more effective intervention strategies in Latinx children at risk for having overweight and obesity. Abstract Objective: To assess the association of obesogenic environmental characteristics around schools with body adiposity and adipokine concentrations in Brazilian children. Design: Cross-sectional study. Body adiposity was assessed using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Concentrations of leptin, adiponectin, retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and chemerin were measured. Predominantly ultra-processed food (UPF) stores, public physical activity (PA) facilities, green spaces, walkability, traffic accidents and crime were evaluated. The neighbourhood unit was the 400 m (0·25 miles) road network buffer around schools. The association of environmental characteristics with body adiposity and adipokine concentrations was assessed by linear regression models using generalised estimating equations. Setting: Urban schools (n 24), Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Participants: Children aged 8 and 9 years (n 378). Results: A higher density of predominantly UPF stores and a lower percentage of green space were associated with higher total (β: 0·12; 95 % CI 0·06, 0·18 and β: –0·10; 95 % CI –0·16, –0·04, respectively) and android body fat (β: 0·28; 95 % CI 0·13, 0·43 and β: –0·18; 95 % CI –0·32, –0·04, respectively). In addition, the densities of PA facilities and crime were inversely associated with leptin concentrations. Traffic accidents density and percentage of green spaces around schools had, respectively, a positive and an inverse association with concentrations of adiponectin and RBP4. Conclusions: Obesogenic environmental characteristics around schools were associated with total and android body fat, as well as with pro-inflammatory adipokine concentrations in Brazilian children from a medium-sized city.

Background/Objectives: To assess associations between dietary fibre intake, adiposity, and odds of metabolic syndrome in Pacific and New Zealand European women. Methods: Pacific (n = 126) and New Zealand European (NZ European; n = 161) women (18–45 years) were recruited based on normal (18–24.9 kg/m2) and obese (≥30 kg/m2) BMIs. Body fat percentage (BF%), measured using whole body DXA, was subsequently used to stratify participants into low (p < 0.001). The main source of fibre was discretionary fast foods for Pacific women and whole grain breads and cereals for NZ European women. A regression analysis controlling for age, socioeconomic deprivation, ethnicity, energy intake, protein, fat, and total carbohydrate intake showed an inverse association between higher fibre intake and BF% (β= −0.47, 95% CI = −0.62, −0.31, p < 0.001), and odds of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.84, 0.98, p = 0.010) among both Pacific and NZ European women (results shown for both groups combined). Conclusions: Low dietary fibre intake was associated with increased metabolic disease risk. Pacific women had lower fibre intakes than NZ European women.

As adiposity increases in youth, so does the prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs). The etiology of adiposity-based chronic disease and CMRFs includes ethnoracial disparities that are rarely considered in current treatment approaches. Precision interventions require further characterization of these disparities among high-risk youth. The objective of this study was to characterize differences in CMRF among African American (AA) and Hispanic (H) adolescents with varying levels of adiposity. A cross-sectional analysis of 2284 adolescents aged 12–17 was conducted using 3-year clinical data from Lifedoc Health. CMRF prevalence were compared using χ2, with logistic regression models (LRM) applied to explore the relationships between exposures (age, sex, ethnoracial group, adiposity) and CMRF outcomes. Prevalence of CMRF rose with increasing adiposity, which was the strongest determinant of risk overall. However, individual risk profiles differed between the two groups, with H having higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), higher triglycerides and liver enzymes, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). Meanwhile, AA had higher prevalence of elevated blood pressure (BP) in the overweight category, prediabetes in overweight to severe obesity, and type 2 diabetes in obesity. LRM showed 3.0-fold greater chance of impaired glucose metabolism in AA than H, who were 1.7, 5.9, and 8.3 times more likely to have low HDL-c, high liver enzymes, and high triglycerides, respectively. Overweight/obesity prevalence was very high among AA and H adolescents. Excess adiposity was associated with an increased prevalence of CMRF, with individual risk factors differing between groups as adiposity increased. Research within routine clinical settings is required to better characterize these discrepancies and ameliorate their adverse impact on health in the transition to adulthood.

We assessed continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) parameters in patients with T1D depending on their body weight, body composition, and insulin sensitivity. Adiposity is a chronic disease that must be treated from childhood. Despite the transcendence of improving habits, few interventions report their contribution to decreasing adiposity. Methods: This cohort enrolled children and teens of any gender, 8–18 years old, and with a body mass index (BMI) z-score of ≥1 into “Sacbe”, a comprehensive program to identify which eating habits could reduce BMI z-score. The sample size calculated was 110 participants. We recorded anthropometric measures, clinical history, and habits. A clinically relevant reduction in BMI z-score was defined as ≥0.5 over 12 months or its equivalent according to the months of follow-up. Results: 58.2% were female, the median age was 12 years (range: 9.1–14.7), and the mean BMI z-score was 2.30 ± 0.83. The 82.7% achieved a reduced BMI z-score but 41.8% achieved a clinically relevant reduction with a median follow-up of 6.7 months. Eating out less than once per week was associated with this outcome, even after adjusting for energy intake, other eating patterns, sedentary screen time, physical activity, sleep duration, and sitting time (HR 2.12; 95% CI: 1.07–4.21). Conclusions: Eating out < once/week implicates less processed food exposition and better quality of food; this habit could be the most effective to reduce childhood adiposity.

Background: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), poverty rate, and the prevalence of overweight/obesity or obesity in children and adolescents aged 2–14. Methods: Parents or guardians reported the weight and height of participants, used to calculate body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-scores according to the International Obesity Task Force standards. Participants were categorized into “overweight/obesity” and “no overweight/obesity” and further into “obesity” and “no obesity”. The rate of poverty rate was determined using data from the National Statistics Institute of Spain, defining it as the percentage of people with income below 60% of the national median. SES was based on the head of household’s occupation and categorized into low, medium, and high levels. Results: Adjusted multilevel models showed participants with medium or high SES had lower odds of overweight/obesity compared to those with low SES (medium SES: odds ratio [OR]: 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54–0.73; high SES: OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.49–0.70). Participants in the high-poverty group had higher odds of having overweight/obesity (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.13–1.74) compared to the low-poverty group. Conclusions: The study highlights significant socioeconomic disparities in childhood overweight/obesity, emphasizing the potential impact of SES and poverty on health outcomes in Spanish children and adolescents.

IntroductionSpecific body composition markers derived from L3 axial computed tomography (CT) images predict clinical cancer outcomes, including chemotherapy toxicity and survival. However, this method is only applicable to those undergoing lumbar (L3) CT scanning, which is not universally conducted in early breast cancer cases. This study aimed to evaluate CT analysis at T4 as a feasible alternative marker of body composition in breast cancer.MethodAll patients participated in the Investigating Outcomes from Breast Cancer: Correlating Genetic, Immunological, and Nutritional (BeGIN) Predictors observational cohort study (REC reference number: 14/EE/1297). PurposeThe aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between perceived physical literacy and obesity-related outcomes among adolescents from Spain.MethodsThis is a secondary cross-sectional analysis including a total sample of 845 Spanish adolescents (55.3% girls) aged 12–17 years from the Valle de Ricote (Region of Murcia) from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) project. Physical literacy was evaluated using the Spanish Perceived Physical Literacy Instrument for adolescents (S-PPLI). Body mass index was computed by taking the participants’ body weight in kilograms and dividing it by the square of their height in meters, and body mass index (z score) and overweight/obesity and obesity were computed by the World Health Organization age- and sex-specific thresholds. BackgroundMaternal obesity is associated with an increased risk of large-for-gestational-age births and childhood obesity. However, evidence on its potential associations with long-term offspring body composition remains limited. This prospective cohort study examined associations between maternal body mass index (BMI) during pregnancy and body composition in the young adult offspring.MethodsParticipants were the offspring from a birth cohort in Chiang Mai (Thailand). Maternal BMI was assessed at the first antenatal clinic visit (≤24 weeks of gestation) in 1989–1990. In 2010–2011, we followed up the offspring at approximately 20 years of age, assessing their body composition using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Associations between maternal BMI and offspring body composition were explored using unadjusted and adjusted analyses.ResultsWe assessed 391 young adults (55% were females). Higher maternal BMI was associated with increased offspring fat mass and lean mass. In adjusted analyses, offspring of mothers with overweight/obesity exhibited total body fat percentages 1.5 (95% CI 0.1, 2.9; p = 0.032) and 2.3 (95% CI 0.2, 4.5; p = 0.036) percentage points higher than offspring of normal-weight and underweight mothers, respectively. Fat mass index was similarly higher: 0.9 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.3, 1.5 kg/m2; p = 0.002) and 1.4 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.5, 2.3 kg/m2; p = 0.002), respectively. However, no differences in visceral adiposity were detected.ConclusionHigher maternal BMI during pregnancy was associated with increased adiposity in young adult offspring. Our findings suggest that the cross-generational transmission of maternal obesity-related traits is associated with increased offspring adiposity in the long term.
