Western societies face a major challenge to control their stray dog population due to its uncontrolled propagation and abandonment. Despite the management programmes implemented in many European countries, the reduction of the stray dog population has not been achieved. This is not only related to dogs’ well-being, but also to their coexistence with humans, especially in urban areas. Problem-solving approaches vary in different countries, as there is no common legislation in the European Community dealing with stray dog control. To realise this research study, data from secondary sources, as well as data collected from thirteen European countries were analysed. A comparative overview of policies and measures was examined to show that stray dog population management depends on the policy implicated by each country. In contrast to countries of northern Europe, signifi-cant problems were faced mainly by the countries of southern Europe and the Balkans. The purpose of this paper was to present the legal framework of management for the stray dog population in ac-cordance with what is implemented in different EU countries and to unveil the need for action for a common European Community Directive or Regulation dealing with stray dog control.

Abstract Aims The impact of hospital readmissions on the outcomes of heart failure (HF) patients is well known. However, data on temporal trends of cause‐specific hospital readmissions in these patients are limited. Methods and results From 1987 to 2014, we identified and followed up for 1 year 608 135 patients ≥18 years hospitalized with HF according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 9 and 10 from the National Inpatient Register. Readmissions for cardiovascular (CVD) and non‐CVD causes and co‐morbidities were defined according to ICD‐9 and ICD‐10 codes. We analysed trends in the incidence rate of readmissions, the median time to the first rehospitalization, and the time to readmission, stratified by sex, age groups and cause of rehospitalization using linear regression. Abstract Background Teriparatide was the first anabolic agent recommended for the treatment of osteoporosis. Long-term real-world, controlled studies are not available. The purpose was to evaluate the long-term effects of treatment with teriparatide on fractures and Health Related Quality of Life in subjects with established osteoporosis in comparison with placebo treated patients with osteoporosis and the general population. Methods A 10-year follow-up was performed after a prospective, open-labelled study with teriparatide 20 μg given subcutaneously daily for a mean of 18 months (range 14–24 months) in 40 women, mean age 69 years, with osteoporosis and vertebral compression. Placebo treated women, n = 25, mean age 60 years, from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled growth hormone trial with daily subcutaneous injections for 18 months, with osteoporosis were used as controls. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and questionnaires were performed at start, after 18 months, after 36 months and after 10 years. Abstract Reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is associated with increased mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, the prognostic impact of elevated systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) in the very elderly patients after AMI is lacking. We aimed to study the impact of elevated sPAP on one- and five-year all-cause mortality after AMI in very elderly patients, 80 years of age and older. Of a total number of 353 patients (≥ 80 years) who were hospitalized with acute coronary syndrome, 162 patients presenting with AMI and with available data of sPAP on echocardiography were included and followed-up for 5 years. The survival analyses were performed using Cox-Regression models adjusted for conventional risk factors including LVEF. Altogether 66 of 162 patients (41%) had ST-segment elevation MI, and 121 (75%) of patients were treated with percutaneous coronary intervention in the acute phase. Echocardiography during the admission revealed that 78 patients (48%) had a LVEF ≤ 45% and 66 patients (41%) had a sPAP ≥ 40 mmHg. After one and five years of follow-up, 23% (n = 33) and 53% (n = 86) of patients died, respectively. A multivariable Cox-Regression analysis showed that the elevated sPAP (≥ 40 mmHg) was an independent predictor of increased mortality in both one and five years after AMI; HR of 2.63 (95%, CI 1.19–5.84, P 0.017) and HR of 2.08 (95%, CI 1.25–3.44, P 0.005) respectively, whereas LVEF ≤ 45% did not show any statistically significant impact, neither on one- nor on five-year mortality (HR 1.3, 95% CI 0.6–2.9, p = 0.469) and (HR 1.4, 95% CI 0.8–2.4, p = 0.158), respectively. Elevated sPAP was an independent risk factor for one- and five-year all-cause mortality after AMI in very elderly patients and sPAP seems to be a better prognostic predictor for all-cause mortality than LVEF. The risk of all-cause mortality after AMI increased with increasing sPAP.

Abstract Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite, causing one of the most prevalent parasitic infections in the world. In the present study water sources of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, where the hygienic infrastructure is still developing, were investigated. A total of 214 water samples of 10 L volume, were collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), a slaughterhouse and rivers. The samples were filtered and then analysed using real-time PCR and multilocus genotyping. T. gondii DNA was found in four (1.9%) samples representing T. gondii type I; in one of them T. gondii-like oocysts were also confirmed microscopically. The approximate level of contamination of positive samples ranged between 30 and 2300 T. gondii sporozoites. The results of this study confirmed that T. gondii is present in wastewater in the greater metropolitan area of Xining and a neighbouring county. Contamination of wastewater at this level constitutes rather a moderate source of Toxoplasma infections in humans and animals. It suggests, however, a link between environmental exposure of animals, meat processing facilities and WWTPs. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation describing T. gondii detection in wastewater and environmental water samples collected from the territory of P.R. China using sensitive molecular tools.

Abstract Background Acquired aortic stenosis (AS) increases with age and has high mortality without intervention. Factors predicting its development are unclear, although atherosclerotic factors are assumed to be involved. Our aim in this study is to estimate the lifetime cumulative incidence and predictors of AS in middle-aged men. Methods We included a random sample of men (n = 9998) born 1915–1925 in Gothenburg, Sweden. From them, 7,494 were examined and followed until a diagnosis of AS or death (maximum follow-up time 42.8 years). We identified AS diagnosis from the Swedish National Patient Registry and deaths from the Swedish Cause of Death Registry by using International Classification of Disease (ICD) diagnostic criteria. To study time-dependent relationships between AS and risk factors with death as the competing risk, we divided the cohort into three overlapping follow-up groups: 25–43, 30–43 and 35–43 years. We used age-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model to identify predictors of AS. Results The lifelong cumulative incidence of AS was 3.2%. At baseline, participants in the third group had a healthier lifestyle, lower body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and serum cholesterol levels. Higher BMI, obesity, cholesterol, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, smoking and heredity for stroke were associated with AS. With BMI of 20–22.5 as a reference, hazard ratios of being diagnosed with AS for men with a baseline BMI of 25–27.5 kg/m2, 27.5–30 kg/m2 and > 30 kg/m2 were 1.99 (95% CI 1.12–3.55), 2.98 (95% CI 1.65–5.40) and 3.55 (95% CI 1.84–6.87), respectively. Conclusions The lifetime cumulative incidence of AS in middle-aged male population was 3.2%. Multiple atherosclerotic risk factors, particularly high BMI might be associated with a higher risk of developing AS.

Abstract Investigate trends in myocarditis incidence and prognosis in Sweden during 2000–2014. Little data exist concerning population-trends in incidence of hospitalizations for myocarditis and subsequent prognosis. Linking Swedish National Patient and Cause of Death Registers, we identified individuals ≥ 16 years with first-time diagnosis of myocarditis during 2000–2014. Objective: Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is a rare endocrine disorder in wh ich insufficient levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) lead to low serum calcium (S-Ca) levels and muscular cramps. The aim was to study the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and comorbidities in patients with HypoPT compared with the general population and to estimate the need of treatment with PTH analog. Design: Patients with HypoPT were identified and compared with a popula tion sample. Short Form-36 (SF-36) and EuroQol-5 Dimensions Visual Analogue Scale questionnaires were used. All patients were followed up at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital outpatient clinic. Methods: From the medical records between 2007 and 2020, 203 patients with HypoPT were identified and compared with a population sample (n = 414) from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) MONICA project, Gothenburg, Sweden. Of the 203 patients who met the diagnostic criteria, 164 were alive and 65% answered the HRQoL questionnaires. Results: Patients with HypoPT, 80% postsurgical, and controls had similar age (60 years) and sex distribution (80% women). Patients had lower SF-36 summary component scores for physical (40.0 (interquartile range (IQR): 21) vs 51.2 (IQR: 14.6); P < 0.001) and mental (43.1 (IQR:17.4) vs 56.1(IQR:13.3); P < 0.001) well-being, irrespective of etiology or calcium levels. Individuals with HypoPT had more medications and lower renal function but not higher mortality than controls. Low HRQoL together with low calcium was present in 23% of individuals with HypoPT. Conclusion: HRQoL was markedly lower in patients with HypoPT than in controls and independent of S-Ca levels. Treatment with PTH analog could be considered at least among patients with both low HRQoL and low calcium levels.

The article, based on the personal experience of the President of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP), presents the features of three main training programs for pathologists: European, Anglo-Saxon and North-American, applied in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union of Medical Professionals (UEMS), the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) and the American Board of Pathology (ABPath), respectively. Differences in the training of pathologists in different countries are associated with the structure and time of training, the possibilities of financing it, the sub-specialties of pathologists and their accreditation by the commissions for pathology. The minimum training time for pathologists varies in different countries of the world and is: six years (in Sri Lanka), five and a half years (in the countries of the British Commonwealth), four years (in the USA, North American countries, EU countries, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand), three to five years (in South Africa), two years (in Russia, Armenia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia), one year (in Ukraine). The structure of training for resident pathologists is also different. For example, the European system of training pathologists covers such compulsory subjects as clinical and surgical pathology, autopsy, cytopathology, as well as additional (for some sub-specialties) educational disciplines: neuropathology, dermatopathology, pediatric pathology. The Anglo-Saxon system, in addition to clinical and surgical pathology, includes chemical pathology (metabolic medicine), virology, infectious diseases, and optional subjects: hematopathology and biochemistry. Medical microbiology and chemical pathology are also being studied in Arab countries. The North American resident pathologist training system includes surgical pathology, autopsy, forensic medical examination, chemistry, cytopathology, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, hematopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, virology, infectious diseases, liver pathology, transplant pathology, transfusion medicine. The financial support provided by the Education Committee of the IAP encourages the development of educational programs and the creation of schools in pathology in developing countries, the organization of international Congresses, teleconferences and webinars, and the development of the international program “Goodwill / Visiting / Ambassador”. In conclusion, Albert Einstein's statement is given: “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”.Conclusion. The time has come for an educational revolution. It is necessary to give strength to everyone in order to open channels everywhere to improve education and achieve harmonization of Pathology globally.

Sometimes, the priorities in the growing patterns create dubiousness, surprises and are proved unsuitable to re-form and redress the distortions of economy, magnifying them or even emerging news. When the external or the individual interferences are remained out of the planning, then the knowledge of why the various indices yield conflicting sectoral rankings can help the policy-makers to plan ameliorated strategies. In this paper a decomposition analysis for the components of conventional backward linkages’ (BLs’) indices and the corresponding type I multipliers (t.I-Ms’) has been taken place, in order to support the comparison and the comprehension of conflictions that are recorded on their derived sectoral rankings. For the empirical paradigm, data from the Greek economy have been used. The indicators’ appropriateness for the developmental planning has been scrutinized giving an emphasis on the model’s causality, the initial exogenous stimuli and the “intrasectoral initial trends for impacts’ generation”. The analysis provides a proof that the BL’s indices are strongly tendentious and the t.I-Ms’ are preferable for the medium-to-long run growing planning.

Background. Somatotroph adenomas (SAs) exhibit a variable responsiveness to somatostatin analogue (SS-a) treatment, a process that is not well understood. We investigated established and novel histological markers as predictors of SS-a responsiveness. Methods. We retrospectively investigated pathology samples from 36 acromegalic patients that underwent transsphenoidal surgery. Clinical, hormonal, and imaging data were available in 24/36 patients, before and after SS-a treatment. Specimens were semiquantitatively analyzed with immunocytochemistry for Ki-67, KER, SSTR-2, SSTR-5, ZAC-1, E-cadherin, and AIP. Results. Collectively, 18 (50%) adenomas were each classified as densely/sparsely granulated somatotroph adenomas (DGSAs/SGSAs), respectively. Patients that received preoperative SS-a had lower expression of SSTR-2 compared to those that did not (2.0 (1.0, 3.0) vs. 3.0 (3.0, 3.0), p = 0.042). Compared with DGSAs, SGSAs had higher Ki-67 labeling index (LI) (1.0 (0.5, 1.0) vs. 2.0 (1.0, 3.5), p = 0.013), and a higher proportion of high MR T2 signal (1 (6%) vs. 6 (33%), p = 0.035), and tended to express less ZAC-1 (p = 0.061) and E-cadherin (p = 0.067). In linear regression corrected for baseline growth hormone (GH), ZAC-1 immunostaining was significantly associated with a decrease in GH levels after SS-a treatment (beta (95% confidence interval): −1.53 (−2.80, −0.26), p = 0.021). No markers were associated with changes in circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) after treatment with SS-a. Conclusion. The novel marker ZAC-1 was associated with GH response to medical treatment with SS-a. The SGSA cases were characterized by higher Ki-67 values and MR T2 signals indicative of an inferior response to SS-a. These findings improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying SA response to medical treatment.

Abstract: During the last three decades, the European Union has adopted a series of policies aiming to increase the new farmers entering the primary sector. This scheme, namely the “New Entrants Policy”, is reflected to the relevant regulations of the Common Agricultural Policy. After many years of implementation, there is still limited information regarding young farmers’ perceptions and participation to this scheme. Against this backdrop, a questionnaire was developed in order to assess the degree of new farmer’s satisfaction on their decision to enter the agricultural sector by participating in this scheme. Furthermore, we tried to evaluate the factors and motivations that determined their decision. The survey was carried out in Greece during an educational seminar specifically designed for new entrants in agriculture. In total, 254 new farmers answered questions concerning their experience from the implementation of the program. Additionally, executives of public services involved in the program implementation were interviewed in depth. Data analysis revealed that the majority of new entrants declare a high degree of satisfaction from their decision to enter agriculture. Specifically, those who display environmental consciousness related to field practices towards environment protection feel more satisfied with their decision.

In Europe 160 million people are members of social economy enterprises and mutual societies. Members that work at social enterprises usually are bound with an employee relationship with their organization; on the other hand participating in a social enterprise could be their only chance to find a job, especially for economies that face a long-term recession such as the Greek economy. Social enterprises and entrepreneurs invest in reciprocity which represents that positive actions will inspire reciprocal positive actions. The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of reciprocity on members’ decision either to invest in social enterprises or to work for them acquiring in both cases the necessary shares. For this reason, a survey was conducted among Greek members of social enterprises listed in the Greek Social enterprises directory, to investigate their aspects about reciprocity and if these aspects affect their decision to work in a social enterprise or support financially them. The survey process returned 142 fully completed questionnaires. The analysis identified a sub group (5 over 27 items) of the questions used to measure reciprocity that can be used to classify participants into shareholders - members (investors) and shareholders - workers in social enterprises. It is worth mentioning that sex or other demographic characteristics of the respondents do not affect this classification while there are only aspects of positive reciprocity that have either positive or negative effect on the possibility to work in social enterprises. Social entrepreneurs and the Greek state could use these findings in order to direct and manage their expansion efforts.

Because of the Greek economic crisis, almost all businesses are facing difficult times with severe consequences for employment and the whole economy. Responding to the economic crisis, the companies cut off investments, wages and reduced personnel. However, the companies have to adapt their business strategies to cope with the crisis. This paper conducts a strategic assessment of the Greek agricultural cooperatives during the first half of 2013 using in-depth interviews with cooperative executives in order to illustrate how they have responded to the crisis and also to investigate their strategic options for the upcoming period. The results of the analysis show that agricultural cooperatives have chosen the retrenchment and cost-cutting strategies by restraining their activities while they appear eager to export their production. In addition, the cash shortage forced them to count exclusively on their members to finance any new economic activity. According to the cooperatives' executives, their adaption strategies exclude abandoning the activities and selling the equipment and their real estate properties, while they involve exports, the experienced personnel and marketing investments. These results could provide helpful directions not only for the agricultural cooperatives' management boards but also for the food industry businesses operating under a severe economic situation such as the present Greek economic crisis.

The main purpose of this paper is to empirically explore the characteristics of the cheese sector that lead businesses in Greece to profitability. It is also important to evaluate the impact of the current economic crisis on the economic performance of cheese enterprises. This study uses a panel data set that come from balance sheets and income statements of almost 100 companies operating in the cheese sector for the period 2006 to 2011. The first results show that during this economic crisis period, the profitability of cheese businesses has been affected adversely. Moreover, the smaller sized businesses are presenting the most significant efficiency and profitability losses.

This paper addresses the thermal bridges issues of a two storey lightweight steel framed envelope in which the VIPs are placed in an inner “protected” layer of the external walls. This configuration provides “protection” for the VIPs, allows flexibility in installation of façade elements and at the same time permits interventions and modifications (e.g. drilling, installation of appliances) on the internal side of the wall. The envelope is extensively analyzed in terms of all the different types of thermal bridges utilizing commercial computational tools and standardized methodologies and their effect on the overall thermal performance is evaluated. A total improvement of 33% on the heat transfer coefficient of the building is estimated. Results indicate the junctions between the external and internal walls, the external walls and the ceiling, the internal walls and the roof and the internal walls and the floor, respectively, as the most crucial thermal bridges. Different design modifications and solutions are assumed in order to further reduce the impact of the most crucial thermal bridges. The implementation of the modifications resulted to a further reduction of the overall thermal losses by 27.5%, leading to an overall thermal loss reduction by 60.5% when compared to the reference building.

This case report is a presentation of a chronic intraventricular encapsulated hematoma in an adult who presented with gait disturbance, fever, palsy of N. III, N. VI and N. VII, and photophobia. Ophthalmoscopy revealed a bilateral papilledema. Computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intraventricular mass in the lateral ventricle. Preoperative diagnosis could not rule out a neoplasm. The lesion was totally removed with open surgery and was found to be a chronic intraventricular encapsulated hematoma. A chronic intraventricular encapsulated hematoma is a rare entity. After the removal of the mass, the clinical symptoms of the patient gradually resolved.

A rare case of mucopyocele in a patient who presented with epileptic seizures is reported. The computed tomography scan (CT) and the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed an intradural extension of a giant fronto-ethmoidal mucopyocele, eroding the cribriform plate and compressing both frontal lobes. The lesion was removed by craniotomy with elimination of the mass effect and reconstruction of the anterior skull base. An intracranial-intradural mucopyocele is an extremely rare cause of generalized convulsion as a presenting symptom, with only 6 cases reported in the literature. The total removal of the lesion associated with anterior fossa reconstruction is the treatment of choice.

Abstract Introduction The safety of octreotide use, in its short-acting preparation, in pregnancy is still unclear. This report provides the first documentation of uneventful octreotide LAR use during three pregnancies in a woman with bronchial carcinoid-associated adrenocorticotropic hormone-dependent Cushing's syndrome. Case presentation A 25-year-old Arabic woman presented to our emergency department with rapid onset of headache, flaring acne and hirsutism, facial puffiness, weight gain and paroxysmal myopathy, and paranoiac thoughts of rape and sexual intimidation. After undergoing surgical removal of a mass by left lower lung lobectomy, her residual lung disease medical therapy failed. Chronic octreotide LAR injections were initiated as indicated by a positive octreoscan. Follow-up revealed a long-lasting positive response to octreotide. Avidity of octreotide to somatostatin receptor sub-type 2 was later confirmed by a positive somatostatin receptor sub-type 2 in the resected tumor specimen. Against our instructions, the patient had three spontaneous pregnancies leading to delivery of three full-term healthy children while her octreotide LAR therapy continued. Conclusion This case adds more data supporting the potential for the safe use of octreotide and the feasibility of octreotide LAR use during pregnancy, making compliance with the patient's preference not to withdraw octreotide therapy as soon as her pregnancy is confirmed a thoughtful option.

Background Overweight and obesity are increasing globally with aging, as are life expectancy and aging‐associated disorders, including calcific aortic stenosis (AS). Studies investigating the correlation between high body mass index (BMI) and AS are contradictory and inconclusive. This study examines a potential association between BMI and AS in women. Methods and Results By linking the Swedish Medical Birth Register and the Swedish National Patient Register, we included women aged 18 to 55 years with a first childbirth from 1981 to 2020. Diagnosis of AS and comorbidities were defined according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. The women were divided into groups on the basis of BMI. For this research project, a DEA-based Malmquist index model was built to evaluate the effectiveness and productivity of Greece's thirteen distinct tourist zones. The purpose of this article is to present a statistical analysis comparing the economic performance of different tourist locations in Greece. It does this by using a technique known as data envelopment analysis (DEA), which measures the Malmquist efficiency of the tourist sector in each of Greece's thirteen regions for the years 2017-2021. According to the findings of our study, the level of competitiveness enjoyed by a number of Greece's areas has not increased throughout the period under review. Our study approach and results give a reference for places in Greece that urgently need quick tourist growth to affect economic recovery. This need arises against the background of global climate change, the energy crisis, and the age that follows COVID-19.

Greek giant beans, also known as “Gigantes Elefantes” (elephant beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L.,) are a traditional and highly cherished culinary delight in Greek cuisine, contributing significantly to the economic prosperity of local producers. However, the issue of food fraud associated with these products poses substantial risks to both consumer safety and economic stability. In the present study, multi-elemental analysis combined with decision tree learning algorithms were investigated for their potential to determine the multi-elemental profile and discriminate the origin of beans collected from the two geographical areas. Ensuring the authenticity of agricultural products is increasingly crucial in the global food industry, particularly in the fight against food fraud, which poses significant risks to consumer safety and economic stability. To ascertain this, an extensive multi-elemental analysis (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, Ge, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Re, Se, Sr, Ta, Ti, Tl, U, V, W, Zn, and Zr) was performed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Bean samples originating from Kastoria and Prespes (products with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status) were studied, focusing on the determination of elemental profiles or fingerprints, which are directly related to the geographical origin of the growing area. In this study, we employed a decision tree algorithm to classify Greek “Gigantes Elefantes” beans based on their multi-elemental composition, achieving high performance metrics, including an accuracy of 92.86%, sensitivity of 87.50%, and specificity of 96.88%. These results demonstrate the model’s effectiveness in accurately distinguishing beans from different geographical regions based on their elemental profiles. The trained model accomplished the discrimination of Greek “Gigantes Elefantes” beans from Kastoria and Prespes, with remarkable accuracy, based on their multi-elemental composition.

The current study investigates the capacity of the proposed meta-material layout for the blast protection of above-ground steel pipes against explosions. The philosophy of the meta-material layout’s design is described adequately, and the 1D periodic structures’ theory is adopted for the analytical prediction of the layout’s band-gaps. The special characteristics of the blast loading are explained, and specific time-related parameters are calculated. The layout is tested numerically for nine explosion scenarios of various magnitude via the finite element program ABAQUS, and the CONWEP model is selected for the simulation of the explosions. The results demonstrate a significant reduction in the maximum displacements developed on the pipe’s spring line and crown within a blast loading. This study composes an extension of the author’s previous research on buried steel pipes and surface explosion, advancing now the applicability of the meta-material layouts for the cases of above-ground steel pipes towards explosions and blast hazards. The outer goal is the investigation and the further spreading of the beneficial exploitation of meta-materials concepts for the scope of the pipelines’ effective blast protection, readdressing that this way is a major hazard for this type of structure and a gap in the current literature.

Adulteration of high-value agricultural products is a critical issue worldwide for consumers and industries. Discrimination of the geographical origin can verify food authenticity by reducing risk and detecting adulteration. Between agricultural products, beans are a very important crop cultivated worldwide that provides food rich in iron and vitamins, especially for people in third-world countries. The aim of this study is the construction of a map of the locally characteristic isotopic fingerprint of giant beans, “Fasolia Gigantes-Elefantes PGI”, a Protected Geographical Indication product cultivated in the region of Kastoria and Prespes, Western Macedonia, Greece, with the ultimate goal of the discrimination of beans from the two areas. In total, 160 samples were collected from different fields in the Prespes region and 120 samples from Kastoria during each cultivation period (2020–2021 and 2021–2022). The light element (C, N, and S) isotope ratios were measured using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS), and the results obtained were analyzed using chemometric techniques, including a one-way ANOVA and Binomial logistic regression. The mean values from the one-way ANOVA were δ15NAIR = 1.875‰, δ13CV-PDB = −25.483‰, and δ34SV-CDT = 4.779‰ for Kastoria and δ15NAIR = 1.654‰, δ13CV-PDB = −25.928‰, and δ34SV-CDT = −0.174‰ for Prespes, and showed that stable isotope ratios of C and S were statistically different for the areas studied while the Binomial logistic regression analysis that followed correctly classified more than 78% of the samples.

Even though efforts have been made in recent decades to revive urban areas in the European Union (EU), the contemporary challenges that mostly large cities face require continuous support and adjustments in urban policies. Under the EU Cohesion Policy for the 2014–2020 programming period, the integrated territorial development of various specific areas is pursued by the Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI). In Greece, many of these programs concern Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategies (ISUDSs). One of these is the ISUDS of Thessaloniki, which is perhaps the most complex in terms of management and implementation in Greece, mainly due to the chosen managerial approach and the size of Thessaloniki, the second largest city in the country. Thessaloniki’s ISUDS is managed by the Urban Authority (UA), which has already evolved into a separate model of metropolitan governance administration. The aim of this paper is to identify the determinants in its design and implementation, as well as the effects of the strategy on urban development through the assessment of its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and prospects of strategy through the Delphi approach.

This paper reports on preliminary yet consistent studies and results around the concept of meta-material applied to the protection of buried gas transmission pipelines. The capacity of the proposed meta-material layout in attenuating and dissipating the energy induced by a surface explosion is described in general terms, and then it is examined for a set of nine realistic cases. The formulation of the band gaps, which are considered zones of mitigation for the incident waves of certain frequencies, composes the core of the analysis. For the calculation of the band gaps that target a specific range of frequencies, the 1D periodic structures’ theory is adopted, and the results have been verified numerically via COMSOL. The layout is tested for nine cases of surface explosions via finite element analyses in ABAQUS, using the CONWEP model for simulating the surface explosions. Extremely satisfying results are demonstrated regarding the reduction in the vertical and horizontal displacements of the buried steel pipe. The outer goal of the present study is to spotlight the implementation of meta-material concepts for the efficient blast protection of underground structures, addressing a major hazard for this type of structure and a gap in the current literature.

There is a plethora of food products with geographical indications registered in the European Union without any study about their discrimination from other similar products. This is also the case for Greek currants. This paper aims to analyze if stable isotope analysis of C, N, and S could discriminate the Greek currants “Vositzza”, registered as a product of Protected Designation of Origin, from two other currants registered as products of Protected Geographical Indication coming from neighboring areas. The first results show that the stable isotope ratio of sulfur is not detectable due to the very low sulfur content in the samples, and the analysis should be based on the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen to discriminate these products. The mean value of δ15N (1.38‰) of PDO “Vostizza” currants is lower than that of currants grown outside the PDO zone (2.01‰), while the mean value of δ13C of PDO “Vostizza” currants is higher (−23.93‰) in comparison to that of currants grown outside the PDO zone (−24.83‰). Nevertheless, the results indicate that with only two isotopic ratios, discrimination could not be achieved, and further analysis is required.

In this study, we aimed to develop a sampling method that could be used in geographical discrimination studies of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) by considering the geoclimatic variability within the cultivation zone of the analyzed product. The Regional Unit of Kastoria in Greece, a major area of protected designation origin of pulse crops, was selected for detailed investigation. Meteorological data were collected from five weather stations in different subregions of Kastoria (Argos Orestiko, Kalochori, Lakkomata, Lithia, and Polykarpi), over a period of six years (2015 to 2020), along with data of soil texture. The collected data were analyzed in order to determine statistically significant differences among the subregions with regard to the aforementioned parameters. A seasonality pattern was observed for all subregions concerning the microclimate, which splits the data into two clusters. Moreover, a significant variation of the soil textures was revealed, frequently affecting farmers’ decision regarding agronomic practices, leading to the unique stable-isotope ratios and multi-elemental composition. This study guides the dry bean sample collection and will enable the designation of the boundaries of protected origin regions and enable future sampling schemes for stable-isotope and multi-elemental analysis.

Fraudulent practices are the first and foremost concern of food industry, with significant consequences in economy and human’s health. The increasing demand for food has led to food fraud by replacing, mixing, blending, and mislabeling products attempting to increase the profits of producers and companies. Consequently, there was the rise of a multidisciplinary field which encompasses a large number of analytical techniques aiming to trace and authenticate the origins of agricultural products, food and beverages. Among the analytical strategies have been developed for the authentication of geographical origin of foodstuff, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) increasingly dominates the field as a robust, accurate, and highly sensitive technique for determining the inorganic elements in food substances. Inorganic elements are well known for evaluating the nutritional composition of food products while it has been shown that they are considered as possible tracers for authenticating the geographical origin. This is based on the fact that the inorganic component of identical food type originating from different territories varies due to the diversity of matrix composition. The present systematic literature review focusing on gathering the research has been done up-to-date on authenticating the geographical origin of agricultural products and foods by utilizing the ICP-MS technique. The first part of the article is a tutorial about food safety/control and the fundaments of ICP-MS technique, while in the second part the total research review is discussed.

Stable isotope analysis is a method that has been extensively used for products such as wine, oil, meat, while only a few studies have been conducted for the discrimination of seafood origin and especially for mullet roes or bottarga products. Analysis of the stable isotopes of C, N and S of Bottarga samples from four different origins were carried out. The values of δ15N (5.45‰) and δ34S (4.66‰) for the Greek Bottarga Product named ‘Avgotaracho Messolongiou’, from Messolongi lagoon were lower than other areas while δ13C values were higher (−14.84‰). The first results show that the stable isotopes ratios of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur could be used to discriminate the Greek Protected Designations of Origin Bottarga product ‘Avgotaracho Messolongiou’ from other similar products.

On the other hand, only few studies have been conducted for the discrimination of seafood origin and especially for mullet roes or bottarga products, and even fewer investigate a small number of samples and datasets. Stable isotopes of Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), and Sulfur (S) analysis of bottarga samples from four different origins were carried out. The first results show that the stable isotopes ratios of C, N, and S could be used to discriminate the Greek PDO Bottarga (Messolongi) from other similar products by using a probabilistic machine learning methodology. That could use limited sample data to fit/estimate their parameters, while, at the same time, being capable of describing accurately the population and discriminate individual samples regarding their origin.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the perceptions of Greeks-farmers regarding success and to investigate the factors that are considered as indicators to explain, predict, and determine perceptional entrepreneurial success. This research focuses on existing agricultural enterprises as more than 400 randomly selected agricultural enterprises compose the survey’s sample. The main research method is through structured questionnaires. A series of multivariate analyses were conducted to examine the data. A stepwise procedure was used to identify the relevant variable and the significant ones were identified based on the ‘F’ test. The results of a discriminant analysis indicate that seven predictors (internal LOC, pull motivation, push motivation, internal funding, innovativeness, entrepreneurial capacity, and educational background) have a significant impact on the dependent variable “perceived entrepreneurial success”. Pull motivation is the most important variable to discriminate the groups. The value of this study lies in the fact that it is an original attempt to assess the parameters that could explain the perceived entrepreneurial success of agripreneurs; a focus that is lacking in previous studies.

Climate change projections predict the increase of no-rain periods and storm intensity resulting in high hydrologic alteration of the Mediterranean rivers. Intermittent flow Rivers and Ephemeral Streams (IRES) are particularly vulnerable to spatiotemporal variation of climate variables, land use changes and other anthropogenic factors. In this work, the impact of climate change on the aquatic state of IRES is assessed by the combination of the hydrological model Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and the Temporary Rivers Ecological and Hydrological Status (TREHS) tool under two different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) using CORDEX model simulations. A significant decrease of 20–40% of the annual flow of the examined river (Tsiknias River, Greece) is predicted during the next 100 years with an increase in the frequency of extreme flood events as captured with almost all Regional Climate Models (RCMs) simulations. The occurrence patterns of hyporheic and edaphic aquatic states show a temporal extension of these states through the whole year due to the elongation of the dry period. A shift to the Intermittent-Pools regime type shows dominance according to numerous climate change scenarios, harming, as a consequence, both the ecological system and the social-economic one.

The Regional Unit of Kastoria is a rural area in Northwestern Greece, located on the borderline with Albania. Kastoria city, the capital and the largest city of the Kastoria Regional Unit, is known for the production of high-quality fur products. The fur industry has faced a marked crisis from the 1980s onwards, which has contributed to pushing the local economy towards the development of tourism. However, the tourism industry, developed during the last 20 years, has an undefined character. Specifically, tourism is characterized as small-scaled owing to the limited number of mainly domestic tourists, who, in combination with the economic crisis of the last decade, slowed down the initial accelerated trend. The purpose of this paper is to capture the opinions and attitude of Kastoria visitors towards tourism, as well as to illustrate the changes as a consequence of the economic crisis. In this context, a survey was carried out in two periods (in 2008 at the beginning of economic crisis and in 2017 at the end of this crisis) using a structured questionnaire and with a sample of 232 visitors in total. Our findings are highlighted in an effort for policy makers and marketing planners to formulate appropriate marketing strategies and to reconstruct and promote the local touristic product and attract visitors in these border areas.

This study is a systematic literature review of geographical origin authentication by elemental analytical techniques. Authentication and certification of geographic origin of agri-food products is a useful tool toward the protection of the quality for products. The aim of this work was to map the current state of research in the area of agricultural products and food, identifying emerging fields to the geographical origin of products. The article is divided in three parts. The first part of the article deals with the analytical techniques applied in the food authentication. Special mention is made to elemental analysis and multiple isotope ratio. The second section focuses on statistically published data concerning published research for geographical origin authentication for the period 2015–2019. Specific results are presented inter alia: number of articles according to the type of product, articles according to the type of the analytical techniques, and others. The third part contains characteristic results from articles that were published in the period 2015–2019, on certification of geographical origin on specific agricultural products.
