One of the industries with the fastest development is the hospitality and tourism (HoReCa) sector. However, there is also a growing trend in this sector to evade some state taxes. Despite promises that digitalization will reduce tax evasion, this practice nevertheless is a serious threat to the economy and the state. This study aims to process a comprehensive model for screening and risk assessment of tax fraud in the HoReCa sector in Romania. In this sense, an empirical study was conducted using an econometric model to detect tax evasion in the HoReCa sector in Romania, based on a sample of 50 firms for each sub-sector (hotels, restaurants, cafes), analyzing the period 2018–2022. The dependent variable of the model was the tax evasion risk indicator, calculated as the difference between the average financial ratios of each firm and the average for the entire sector. The results show that the leverage ratio has the strongest positive impact on the tax evasion risk indicator. The fixed asset turnover ratio and the accounts receivable turnover ratio also have a significant impact, indicating false sales reports or collection irregularities. The solvency ratio and the immediate liquidity ratio show positive effects on the risk of tax fraud, while the net rate of return is the only one with a negative effect, suggesting that profitable entities are less prone to tax evasion. The proposed model provides a solid basis for identifying high-risk companies directing tax authorities to improve supervision in the HoReCa industry. The findings also highlight the importance of further automating tax reporting systems to reduce the risks of evasion.

Machine learning-based crop recommendation models are invaluable tools for enhancing modern AI-based farming, assisting in decisions about the selection of crops to optimize yield performance and growth. This research introduces an intelligent strategy and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) principles based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) method due to the growing demand for interpretability in modern farming decision-making, Utilizing the "Smart Agricultural Production Optimizing Engine” dataset procured from Kaggle. The proposed CNN model gives remarkable results through a comprehensive examination of soil and environmental boundaries like Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) levels, temperature, moistness, pH, and precipitation. Our results illustrate that the proposed framework essentially moves forward the precision of trim suggestions, advertising a promising arrangement for modernizing agricultural practices and guaranteeing maintainable crop yields.

Terrestrial invertebrates in urban ecosystems are extremely species-rich, have many important roles in material flow and energy circulation, and are host to many human pathogens that pose threats to human health. These invertebrates are widely distributed in urban areas, including both out- and in-door environments. Consequently, humans are frequently in contact with them, which provides many opportunities for them to pose human health risks. However, comprehensive knowledge on human pathogen transfer via invertebrates is lacking, with research to date primarily focused on dipterans (e.g., mosquitoes, flies). Here, we take a broad taxonomic approach and review terrestrial invertebrate hosts (incl. mosquitoes, flies, termites, cockroaches, mites, ticks, earthworms, collembola, fleas, snails, and beetles) of human pathogens, with a focus on transmission pathways. We also discuss how urbanization and global warming are likely to influence the communities of invertebrate hosts and have flow-on risks to human health. Finally, we identify current research gaps and provide perspectives on future directions.

Abstract Background Undergraduate enrolments and completions in nursing are declining at the same time as requirements for registered nurses in the workforce is increasing. One way to increase enrolments is to lower entry requirements into nursing programs. This study determined the effect of a small lowering of entry scores on the retention and success rates. The study was undertaken at Griffith University, where identical bioscience and clinical courses run at three campuses, one with a lower- than normal-entry score and two with the normal-entry requirements. Methods A comparison of the 62–148 students enrolled in the courses at the lower- than normal- (lesser) entry requiring campus with the 197–288 students enrolled in the courses in one normal-entry requiring campuses. For individual courses (4 bioscience and 2 clinical courses) retention rates were measured and compared between campuses/cohorts. For completing students, we measured success as (i) Academic outcomes; overall marks and marks for the exam and coursework and (ii) Failure rates in the examination and coursework. Data analysis was by Student’s t-test and Odds ratio. Results For all courses, there were few significant differences in measures of retention and success between the lower- and normal-entry campuses, and all differences were small. Comparing the campuses; (a) For all courses, progression rates were similar. (b) For completing students, passing rates were similar in the bioscience courses, but higher in the normal- than lower-entry campus for the clinical courses. (c) In the bioscience courses, the overall marks were similar, but in the clinical courses, the overall mark was slightly higher in the normal- than lower-entry campus. (d) The overall failure rates were similar for the biosciences, but higher for the lower- than normal-entry cohort in the clinical courses. (e) The failure rates in exams were similar between cohorts in all courses. Conclusions This study shows that small changes in entry requirements for a nursing program had minimal effects on retention. The differences in entry requirements also did not affect the success of students in the bioscience courses. Decreasing entry requirement for nursing programs may be a way to increase nursing graduates.

Abstract Accurate prediction of walking travel rates is central to wide-ranging applications, including modeling historical travel networks, simulating evacuation from hazards, evaluating military ground troop movements, and assessing risk to wildland firefighters. Most of the existing functions for estimating travel rates have focused on slope as the sole landscape impediment, while some have gone a step further in applying a limited set of multiplicative factors to account for broadly defined surface types (e.g., “on-path” vs. “off-path”). In this study, we introduce the Simulating Travel Rates In Diverse Environments (STRIDE) model, which accurately predicts travel rates using a suite of airborne lidar-derived metrics (slope, vegetation density, and surface roughness) that encompass a continuous spectrum of landscape structure. STRIDE enables the accurate prediction of both on- and off-path travel rates using a single function that can be applied across wide-ranging environmental settings. The model explained more than 80% of the variance in the mean travel rates from three separate field experiments, with an average predictive error less than 16%. We demonstrate the use of STRIDE to map least-cost paths, highlighting its propensity for selecting logically consistent routes and producing more accurate yet considerably greater total travel time estimates than a slope-only model.

Abstract Controlled sediment flushing operations (CSFOs) allow to recover reservoirs storage loss while rebalancing the sediment flux interrupted by dams but, at the same time, may cause unacceptable ecological impact. In this study, we investigated the responses of the food web of an upland stream to a CSFO, focusing on the effects of fine sediment deposition detected in three different mesohabitats, i.e., a pool, a riffle, and a step-pool. The field campaign lasted two years and included repeated measurements of fine sediment deposits, and sampling of periphyton, benthic macroinvertebrates and fishes. A moderate and patchy deposition occurred due to the CSFO with short and medium-term ecological impact on the lower trophic levels of the food web, which may affect the whole ecosystem functioning. The monitoring of all available mesohabitats in the investigated stream allowed to detect variations in the ecological response to CSFO, providing a more adequate assessment of the impact. As expected, sedimentation was larger in the pool but, in contrast to our hypotheses, the impact was lower and the recovery was longer for the benthic organisms inhabiting the riffle. In the case of fishes, no lethal impact of both brown trout and bullhead was recorded in the short term but the occurrence of longer lasting effects could not be excluded. To date, this is one of the few studies dealing with a detailed integrative assessment of the downstream impact of sediment management from reservoir on both abiotic and biotic components of stream ecosystem.

Abstract Nine red macroalgae (Amphiroa rigida , Gracilaria bursa-pastoris, Gracilaria gracilis , Grateloupia torture, Jania rubens , Laurencia obtusa , Laurencia pyramidalis , Liagora viscida, and Pterocladiella capillaries) were collected from coastal waters of Türkiye, and their proximate, fatty acid, soluble carbohydrate, and mineral profiles were investigated in the present study. According to the results, the crude protein content of the samples was between 4% and 23.8%, and four of the samples (G. turuturu, L. obtusa, L. pyramidalis, and P. capillacea) contained more than 10% protein. The crude lipid content of all the samples was below 1.6%, and the total carbohydrate content was between 38.3% and 76.9%. The macroalgae samples were generally richer in saturated fatty acids, palmitic acid being the most abundant, whereas G. gracilis had the highest content of unsaturated fatty acids (55.8%). All samples exhibited high contents of myo-inositol or glucose. Also, the samples generally had a good composition of minerals. Abstract Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health concern that is fueled by the overuse of antimicrobial agents. Low- and middle-income countries, including those in Africa,. Point prevalence surveys (PPS) have been recognized as valuable tools for assessing antimicrobial utilization and guiding quality improvement initiatives. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prescription rates, indications, and quality of antimicrobial use in African health facilities. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted in multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Hinari (Research4Life) and Google Scholar. Studies reporting the point prevalence of antimicrobial prescription or use in healthcare settings using validated PPS tools were included. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to combine the estimates. To understand the relationship between environmental factors and black fly (Simuliidae) species’ distributions, we sampled immature individuals in Pedra Branca State Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the dry season in June 2018. We then correlated environmental variable values with black fly larvae abundances via redundancy analyses. The abundances of Simulium pertinax Kollar 1832, Simulium subpallidum Lutz 1910, Simulium (Thyrsopelma) spp., Simulium (Psaroniocompsa) spp., and Simulium (Inaequalium) spp. were negatively correlated with light and temperature, while Simulium (Hemicne tha) spp.’s abundance correlated positively with these variables. The abundances of Simulium pertinax Kollar 1832, Simulium (Hemicnetha) spp., and Simulium (Thyrsopelma) spp. were positively associated with altitude, while the abundances of the other species revealed negative correlations with this factor. Species richness was determined using pupae in a linear regression with the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera Trichoptera (EPT) index. This analysis showed that the most deteriorated sites have a higher species richness than more conserved sites within Pedra Branca State Park. Our results suggest that simuliid species richness reflects habitat integrity, thus becoming a reliable indicator of habitat conservatio status.

Abstract The Fezouata Biota (Morocco) is a Burgess Shale-type (BST) assemblage that provides a wealth of information on Early Ordovician ecosystems. Much work has been done to compare the preservation of the Fezouata Biota to other BSTs. However, studies investigating preservation variations within the Fezouata Biota are rare. Here, we use probabilities to investigate the preservation of various ecological categories of Fezouata eumetazoans. Complex taphonomic processes and phylum-specific constraints have led to the better preservation of predators/scavengers in this biota. However, no differences in preservation are observed between vagile and sessile taxa. Importantly, Tremadocian taxa are better preserved than Floian ones. As such, this study highlights the gradual closure of the BST window of preservation in the Zagora region of Morocco and constitutes a benchmark for future palaeoecological and evolutionary studies on the Fezouata Biota.

Abstract Background Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an antimicrobial agent and alternative treatment option that can be used to arrest dental decay. While there is optimism with SDF with regard to caries management, there is no true consensus on the number and frequency of applications for children. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of 38% SDF to arrest early childhood caries (ECC) at three different application regimen intervals. Methods Children with teeth that met International Caries Detection and Assessment System codes 5 or 6 criteria were recruited from community dental clinics into an open-label, parallel-group, randomized clinical trial from October 2019 to June 2021. Participants were randomized to one of three groups using sealed envelopes that were prepared with one of three regimens inside: visits one month, four months, or six months apart. Participants received applications of 38% SDF, along with 5% sodium fluoride varnish (NaFV), at the first two visits to treat cavitated carious lesions. Lesions were followed and arrest rates were calculated. Lesions were considered arrested if they were hard on probing and black in colour. Statistics included descriptive and bivariate analyses (Kruskal one-way analysis of variance and Pearson’s Chi-squared test). A p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Results Eighty-four children participated in the study (49 males and 35 females, mean age: 44.4 ± 14.2 months). Treatment groups were well matched with 28 participants per group. A total of 374 teeth and 505 lesions were followed. Posterior lesions represented only 40.6% of affected surfaces. Almost all SDF treated lesions were arrested for the one-month (192/196, 98%) and four-month (159/166, 95.8%) interval groups at the final visit. Abstract Background Recent technological advances have resulted in low-cost GPS loggers that are small enough to be used on a range of seabirds, producing accurate location estimates (± 5 m) at sampling intervals as low as 1 s. However, tradeoffs between battery life and sampling frequency result in studies using GPS loggers on flying seabirds yielding locational data at a wide range of sampling intervals. Metrics derived from these data are known to be scale-sensitive, but quantification of these errors is rarely available. Very frequent sampling, coupled with limited movement, can result in measurement error, overestimating movement, but a much more pervasive problem results from sampling at long intervals, which grossly underestimates path lengths. Methods We use fine-scale (1 Hz) GPS data from a range of albatrosses and petrels to study the effect of sampling interval on metrics derived from the data. The GPS paths were sub-sampled at increasing intervals to show the effect on path length (i.e. ground speed), turning angles, total distance travelled, as well as inferred behavioural states. Results We show that distances (and per implication ground speeds) are overestimated (4% on average, but up to 20%) at the shortest sampling intervals (1–5 s) and underestimated at longer intervals. The latter bias is greater for more sinuous flights (underestimated by on average 40% when sampling > 1-min intervals) as opposed to straight flight (11%). Although sample sizes were modest, the effect of the bias seemingly varied with species, where species with more sinuous flight modes had larger bias. Sampling intervals also played a large role when inferring behavioural states from path length and turning angles. Conclusions Location estimates from low-cost GPS loggers are appropriate to study the large-scale movements of seabirds when using coarse sampling intervals, but actual flight distances are underestimated. When inferring behavioural states from path lengths and turning angles, moderate sampling intervals (10–30 min) may provide more stable models, but the accuracy of the inferred behavioural states will depend on the time period associated with specific behaviours. Sampling rates have to be considered when comparing behaviours derived using varying sampling intervals and the use of bias-informed analyses are encouraged.

This article is devoted to research on the fire resistance of metal pipelines (penetration rates) under pressure from circulating water or steam operated in energy installations. The need for research is due to the lack of a method for testing the fire resistance of intersections of building structures with standardized fire resistance limits. The article presents both the methodology elaborated for testing metal penetration rates for fire resistance and full-scale tests of these penetration rates (dimensions 630 × 45 mm and 65 × 8 mm) in a wall of aerated concrete blocks with a thicknesses of 1200 and 800 mm.

The paper analyzes the historical circumstances of the 1920s, under which in three regions of the Russian-Belarusian borderland – Pskov, Smolensk and Bryansk governorates – it was necessary to reach the objectives of ‘Belarusization’: the size of the Belarusian population, the state of the school network in the NEP era and staffing for the solution of the “Belarusian question.” Belarusization is regarded as an integral part of the new Soviet national policy based on the resolutions of the 10th and 12th Congresses of the RCP. The purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the basic conditions for carrying out Belarusization in Russian regions with compact residence of the Belarusian population. First, this concerns the size of the Belarusian population in these governorates at the beginning and during the process of Belarusization, and detection of the dynamics and reasons for its significant reduction, starting from the end of the 19th century. Secondly, special attention must be paid to the problems in the school education system during the NEP era (financial, material, personnel), the solution of which was of much higher priority for local authorities in comparison with the objectives of Belarusization. The results of the study show that the policy of Belarusization in the Russian border regions failed to receive the due support either from local authorities overloaded with many other urgent tasks, or from the residents of the above mentioned governorates, including Belarusians. The practice of “self-Russification” became a kind of hidden form of protest among the Belarusian part of the population of the Russian border regions. Conclusions: The policy of Belarusization in the Russian-Belarusian border regions was not carried out in full even in the “minor format” proposed by Moscow, largely due to its artificiality and implementation without taking into account the opinions of the majority of Russian Belarusians themselves. The study is intended for specialists in national and regional politics, and in Russian and Belarusian history.

Introduction: Cytochrome P450 enzymes (P450s) are recognized as the most versatile catalysts worldwide, playing vital roles in numerous biological metabolism and biosynthesis processes across all kingdoms of life. Despite the vast number of P450 genes available in databases (over 300,000), only a small fraction of them (less than 0.2 %) have undergone functional characterization. Objectives: To provide a convenient platform with abundant information on P450s and their corresponding reactions, we introduce the P450Rdb database, a manually curated resource compiles literature-supported reactions catalyzed by P450s. Methods: All the P450s and Reactions were manually curated from the literature and known databases. Subsequently, the P450 reactions organized and categorized according to their chemical reaction type and site. The website was developed using HTML and PHP languages, with the MySQL server utilized for data storage. Results: The current version of P450Rdb catalogs over 1,600 reactions, involving more than 590 P450s across a diverse range of over 200 species. Additionally, it offers a user-friendly interface with comprehensive information, enabling easy querying, browsing, and analysis of P450s and their corresponding reactions. P450Rdb is free available at http://www.cellknowledge.com.cn/p450rdb/. Conclusions: We believe that this database will significantly promote structural and functional research on P450s, thereby fostering advancements in the fields of natural product synthesis, pharmaceutical engineering, biotechnological applications, agricultural and crop improvement, and the chemical industry.

Crack propagation rates (CPRs, or da/dN) of 316LN stainless steel (SS) in high-temperature solution under asymmetric cyclic loading conditions are experimentally determined, focusing primarily on the effect of load-rise time on crack propagation. The increment in crack propagation per cyclic block mainly occurs during the load-rise period. When the stress intensity factor range (ΔK) and load ratio (R) are kept similar, a faster increase in the stress intensity factor (dK/dt) during the load-rise period results in a lower average crack propagation rate (Vave-tr) during that phase. Secondary cracks and fatigue striations are observed on the fracture surface. The CPRs show a higher environmental enhancement factor (Fen) as the load-rise time increases.

Understanding patterns of species-genetic diversity correlations (SGDC) is important for conservation purposes because it allows us to infer whether conservation of species diversity (SD) influences conservation of genetic diversity (GD) and the other way around. Here, we studied SGDCs using aquatic macrofauna in a set of 31 urban ponds in the metropolitan area of Stockholm, Sweden. We also estimated how land use and pond environmental factors affect SD and GD. SD was estimated as species richness. GD was estimated in four focal species that differed in their dispersal abilities: Asellus aquaticus (Isopoda), Haliplus ruficollis (Coleoptera), Planorbis planorbis (Gastropoda), Rana temporaria (Amphibia), using double digest restriction associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing data. There were no significant SGDCs for any of the species. Similarly, GD was not related to land use or pond environment. However, SD had a significant positive correlation with total invertebrate abundance and pond area. Given the absence of significant SGDCs in our study, and the mixed positive and negative patterns found in previous studies reporting SGDCs, we suggest that simultaneously preserving species and genetic diversity in urban areas will prove challenging.

Soil loss by water erosion is one of the main threats to soil health and food production in intensively used agricultural areas. To assess its significance to overall sediment production, we applied the Water and Tillage Erosion Model/Sediment Delivery model (WaTEM/SEDEM) to the Luoyugou catchment, a subcatchment of the Yellow River Basin within the Chinese Loess Plateau. WaTEM/SEDEM considers rill and interrill erosion and deposition rates to calculate the sediment yield rates leaving the catchment. Terraces were established in the 1990s to reduce soil loss in this area, but no soil erosion modeling has been published regarding the effect of this mitigation measure. Therefore, we applied 1000 Monte Carlo simulations of the WaTEM/SEDEM, and the modeled average soil loss by rill and interrill erosion for 2020 was 12.2 ± 0.5 t ha−1 yr−1, with a sediment yield at the outlet of 53,207.8 ± 11,244.1 t yr−1. The results indicated that the terracing reduced gross soil loss rates (from 51.8 t ha−1 yr−1 in 1986 to 12.2 ± 0.5 t ha−1 yr−1 in 2020), while land cover changes, mainly the conversion of forests and grassland, partly counteracted the mitigation (combined effect: 76% reduction). Modeled sediment loads by rill and interrill erosion accounted for 22.8% of the total long-term sediment production recorded by flow discharge measurements. Other processes not considered by the model, such as landslides, gully erosion, riverbank erosion, and sediment production by construction, seem to predominantly influence the overall sediment yield. Considering years with baseline sediment production only, the measured and modeled sediment yields compared favorably, indicating that the latter processes primarily contribute during extreme events.

Abstract Atopic dermatitis often begins in infancy and follows a chronic course of exacerbations and remissions. The etiology is complex and involves numerous factors that contribute to skin barrier defect and inflammation. In the Middle East, the burden of atopic dermatitis is understudied. Epidemiological data specific to the Gulf region are scarce but reveal a prevalence of up to about 40% in the United Arab Emirates. Region-specific factors, such as the climate and the frequency of consanguineous marriages, may affect atopic dermatitis incidence, prevalence, and evolution over time. A panel of experts predominantly from the United Arab Emirates analyzed the evidence from published guidelines, and considered expert guidance and local treatment practices to develop clear recommendations for the management of atopic dermatitis in the United Arab Emirates. They encourage a systematic approach for the diagnosis and treatment, using disease severity scores and quality-of-life measurement tools. Treatment recommendations take into consideration both established therapies and the approved systemic biologics dupilumab and tralokinumab, and the Janus kinase inhibitors baricitinib, upadacitinib, and abrocitinib.

[Objective] Soil and water conservation is important in protecting and improving the ecological environment, which plays an important role for the sustainable development of ecosystems. [Methods] While the study of the soil and water conservation effectiveness in regional scale provide an effective theoretical basis for soil and water conservation. [Results] We supposed an estimation method for the regional-scale soil and water conservation rates by remote sensing based on the RUSLE (revised universal soil loss equation), and estimated its the spatial pattern in Shanxi Province.The results showed that the soil erosion in Shanxi Province is dominated by moderate erosion, with an area of about 49 545.68 km2, and the soil and water conservation rates is 68.38% in 2022, and the soil and water conservation rates accounted for the largest proportion in high level. The soil and water conservation rates of natural vegetation is higher than that of cropland, among which, the rates of forest is the highest at 84.37%. The soil and water conservation rates of the natural vegetation and cropland accounted for the largest proportion in high level with 48.11% and 46.46%, respectively. The rates is greatly affected by slopes, and showed a trend of significant decrease followed by gentle fluctuation. Compared with previous researches, the estimated spatial pattern of soil erosion in Shanxi Province were consistent with the existing data. And the estimated soil and water conservation rates was significantly correlated with the published targets. [Conclusion] The method of estimating soil and water conservation rates at the regional scale by remote sensing can provide an important theoretical and methodological basis for evaluating the effectiveness and impact of soil and water conservation ecological projects and other national large-scale ecological projects.

Background and Aims: The time paediatric patients should resume oral intake after surgery is still ill-defined. No specific evidence suggests that the usual practice of postoperative fasting of 4–6 h to reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is beneficial. The primary objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of PONV with early oral feeding compared to conventional feeding in children undergoing daycare surgery under general anaesthesia. Methods: A randomised controlled trial was conducted in 300 children undergoing daycare surgery under general anaesthesia. Children were randomised into the early feeding group (Group EF, n = 150) or the conventional feeding group (Group CF, n = 150). Group EF received carbohydrate-containing oral fluids when the child demanded feed in the postoperative period. Group CF received oral fluids 4 h post-anaesthesia. All patients were monitored for occurrence of PONV, postoperative pain, duration of hospital stay and parental satisfaction. The incidence of PONV was compared using the Chi-squared test, while other continuous variables were compared using the Student’s t-test. Results: Both groups were comparable regarding PONV (12% in Group EF vs. 18.7% in Group CF, P = 0.109). The Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability scores were significantly lower in Group EF at 0 min (P = 0.011), 30 min (P = 0.001) and 1 h (P < 0.001). Patients in Group EF had a significantly shorter duration of hospital stay, that is, 6.31 [standard deviation (SD): 3.52] [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.45–12.24] h in EF versus 10.13 (SD: 2.99) (95% CI: 5.12–16.33) h in CF (P < 0.001). Parents of the children in Group EF had significantly better parental satisfaction scores (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Early postoperative feeding in children undergoing lower abdominal, non-gastrointestinal surgery under general anaesthesia does not increase the incidence of PONV.

Methods T2D-free adults (n = 2457, mean age 38.5 ± 13.6 years, 54.2% women) who participated in the third examination cycle (2005–2008) of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study were followed for a median of 8.6 years. We estimated the macronutrient quality index (MQI), its individual sub-indices (carbohydrate quality index (CQI), fat quality index (FQI), and healthy plate protein quality index (HPPQI)), as well as the macronutrient quantity. The risk of T2D in relation to macronutrient quantity, quality, and their combined effects was examined using Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for known risk factors for T2D. Results During the study follow-up, 257 incident cases of T2D were documented. Individuals in the highest tertiles of MQI and CQI had a 27% (HR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.54, 0.98) and 29% (HR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.51–0.99) lower T2D risk than those in the lowest tertiles. The T2D incidence was 35% lower in the middle HPPQI tertile than in the lowest (HR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.47, 0.89). The multivariable adjusted model showed that individuals in the middle and highest tertiles of carbohydrate intake had 32% (HR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.49–0.95) and 26% (HR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.55–1.00) lower risks of T2D than individuals in the lowest tertile. Abstract Background Atori Reservoir, located in the heart of southwestern Nigeria, is a tribute to the region's historical significance and natural splendor. Its establishment as a reservoir in 1935 marked a water resource management watershed in the region, transforming Atori into one of Nigeria’s oldest and most important waterbodies. Despite its ancient age and indisputable importance, the exact ecological state of Atori Reservoir has been shrouded in mystery for decades. This study was necessitated by a paucity of information on the ecological status of Atori Reservoir. Results The study identified 953 macroinvertebrates belonging to four classes, distributed across nine orders and nineteen families within Atori Reservoir. Among these, the class Insecta exhibited the highest diversity, while Melanoides tuberculata, a member of the Mollusca class, emerged as the dominant species. Despite the diverse macroinvertebrate community, the physicochemical parameters of the water raised concerns. Elevated values of total dissolved solids and conductivity indicated poor water quality, which was further reflected in the predominance of pollution-tolerant species and the absence of pollution-sensitive ones. Canonical correspondence analysis highlighted potential correlations between macroinvertebrates and water quality variables, yet statistical significance was lacking, as demonstrated by the Monte Carlo permutation test. Conclusion This study sheds light on the ecological state of Atori Reservoir, revealing a diverse macroinvertebrate community but highlighting concerns regarding water quality. The study also emphasizes the pressing need for improved management practices to safeguard the ecological health of Atori Reservoir, given the critical role it plays in the region's ecosystem and local communities.

One of the largest contributors to state income is mining companies, where in 2019 mining companies contributed tax revenues of IDR 33.43 trillion. Based on Law No. 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation which amends the VAT Law Article 4A paragraph (2), Coal was previously not subject to VAT, and in 2022 the VAT rate will change to 11%, which was previously 10%, so from this explanation the aim of this research is to determine the relationship between changes in VAT rates on tax avoidance and the relationship between company risk and tax avoidance. The research object used is from the Indonesian Stock Exchange for Coal Mining Companies in Indonesia from the year corresponding to the start of VAT imposition and changes in rates, namely 2021-2023. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis, and to determine the sample using purposive sampling technique. From the results of the hypothesis test, it was found that there is no significant relationship between changes in VAT rates and tax avoidance, and there is a significant relationship between company risk and tax avoidance.

A survey on the diversity of wood-decay fungi in southeast Xizang was carried out from 2019 to 2023. Based on morphology, ecology, biogeography, and molecular biology, 558 species, belonging to three classes, 15 orders, 57 families, and 177 genera, were identified. One new species, Epithele miscanthi, is described. Species composition analysis showed that there were fifteen dominant families with more than 10 species. These families include 459 species, accounting for 82.26% of the total species found. Thirty-three genera with five or more species are treated as dominant genera, and 325 species were included in these genera, accounting for 58.24% of the total species. Among these, 313 species (56.09%) occurred on angiosperm wood only, 168 species (30.11%) on gymnosperm wood only, 45 species (8.06%) on both angiosperm and gymnosperm wood, 17 species (3.05%) on monocotyledons only, and only one species, Hymenochaete rheicolor, grew on both monocotyledons and dicotyledons. The highest number of species, 266 (47.67%), were found on fallen trunks, followed by fallen branches, rotten wood, stumps, dead standing trees, living trees, and charred wood with 175, 123, 116, 82, 57, and 4 species, respectively. In addition, 456 species cause a white rot and 85 species cause a brown rot, accounting for 81.72% and 15.23% of our studied species, respectively. Statistics were also made on the rotting type and the number of edible or medicinal fungi.

Abstract Background Mangrove forests are highly productive ecosystems that serve as biodiversity points, containing many organisations, contributing to carbon storage, improving water quality and providing ecosystem goods and services to improve local means of subsistence. These resilient ecosystems are characterised by their morphological modification and their particular respiratory structures (pneumatophores), which allow them to proliferate in salt-rich environments. Mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining invertebrate and fishery resources, providing shelter and nutrients to a diverse range of species. However, mangrove ecosystems are threatened by anthropogenic activities such as the extraction of building materials, firewood, crushing plants and salt manufacturing, resulting in the disintegration of ecosystems and the loss of inhabitants. This study aimed to determine the abundance and diversity of macro-benthic invertebrates on the different parts (roots, stems and leaves) of common mangrove species of the Mbegani coast, along the Indian Ocean using a completely randomised design. Results The sampling was done using a 1 m2 quadrat focussed on the three mangrove parts, viz. roots, stems and leaves. The results showed that the highest percentage of macro-invertebrates were recorded on Bruguera gymnorhiza (66.8%), followed by Avicennia marina (20.8%) and the least were Ceriops tagal (12.4%), such variation differed significantly between the three mangrove species across the selected plots (F (2,524) = 5.71, p = 0.035). The stems (54.4%) inhabited a large number of macro-invertebrates, followed by roots (32.8%) and the least were leaves (12.8%), which varied significantly between the three mangrove parts sampled across the selected mangrove species (F (2,524) = 7.25; p = 0.008). The majority of macro-invertebrates were planktonic feeders stuck on stems or herbivores shuttling between the roots and leaves of the plants. Macro-invertebrates recorded on Bruguiera gymnorhiza were more diverse than those found in C. tagal. The findings emphasise the importance of macro-invertebrates in the ecological balance of mangrove ecosystems. Conclusion The study concludes that mangroves in the Mbegani ecosystem have a high potential for biodiversity and are important for the coastal community and the ecosystem of the Bagamoyo District. The results contribute to coastal resources management programmes and future surveillance activities.

Abstract This work deals with the influence of different heat treatment temperatures (140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200, and 210 °C) on changes in sapwood and red heartwood of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). According to the results of wet chemistry methods, HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), SEC (size exclusion chromatography), the wood constituents in sapwood and red heartwood behaved similarly to heat treatment, but the individual proportions were different. The loss of hemicelluloses and the increase in extractives with increasing temperature were more pronounced in sapwood. The amount of cellulose in sapwood and red heartwood showed similar behaviour with increasing temperature. Thermal treatment causes changes in cellulose crystallinity, and the formation of aromatic structures, mainly in beech sapwood. However, the increase in the lignin content of red heartwood was significantly lower than that of sapwood due to its auto condensation, and formation of pseudo-lignin. Among the carbohydrates, the most significant changes were observed in xylose content, which was almost twice as high in red heartwood as in sapwood. Other carbohydrates (glucose, mannose, galactose, and arabinose) reached similar values in sapwood and red heartwood.

Abstract Background Postpartum depression (PPD) has received widespread attention. Shenzhen has been running a large-scale program for PPD since 2013. The program requires mothers to self-assess when applying information technology to PPD screening beginning in 2021. The purpose of this study was to conduct a longitudinal analysis of the impact of mHealth apps on the health-seeking behaviors of PPD patients. Methods Longitudinal data from districts in the Shenzhen Maternal and Child Health Management Information System (MCHMIS) for ten years was used in this study. Referral success rate (RSR, successful referrals to designated hospitals as a percentage of needed referrals) was used to assess health-seeking behavior. Trend χ2 tests were used to assess the overall trend of change after the implementation of mHealth in ten districts in Shenzhen. Interrupted Time Series Analysis (ITSA) was employed to assess the role of the mHealth app in changing patient health-seeking behaviors. Results For the results of the trend χ2 tests, the ten districts of Shenzhen showed an upward trend. For the ITSA results, different results were shown between districts. Nanshan district, Longhua district, and Longgang district all demonstrated an upward trend in the first-year application of the mHealth app. Nanshan district and Longgang district both exhibited an upward trend in terms of sustained effects. Conclusions There is a difference in the performance of the mHealth app across the ten districts. The results show that the three districts with better health resource allocation, Nanshan, Longgang, and Longhua districts, demonstrated more significant mHealth app improvements. The mHealth app’s functions, management systems, and health resource allocation may be potential factors in the results. This suggests that when leveraging mHealth applications, the first step is to focus on macro-level area resource allocation measures. Secondly, there should be effective process design and strict regulatory measures. Finally, there should also be appropriate means of publicity.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) welcomes the challenge of utilizing big data. One of the BPS publications that can be supported using big data is the inflation figure collected from the consumer price survey. One part of the consumer price survey is the HK-4 Survey, which contains house contract rates. So far, the house contract rates produced by BPS have been underestimated or lower than the actual situation. Improvements to house contract rates are carried out by matching BPS data and web scraping of house rental sites using Propensity Score Matching (PSM). The data used in this study includes DKI Jakarta, Bandung, and Semarang from September to October 2023. This study aims to find the best matching model using PSM to improve official statistics (house contract rates) by combining several propensity score value estimation methods and matching algorithms. Furthermore, the results matching the best model will be used to calculate the corrected house contract rates. The study results show that the best matching model generally uses logistic regression propensity score value estimation, the nearest neighbor matching algorithm with returns and uses a 1:1 ratio. The corrected contract rates are far above the official ones (DKI Jakarta corrected 87.27%, Bandung 316.15%, and Semarang 60.04%). Web Scraping allows it to improve official statistics because it is cost and time-saving, enhances the quality of official statistical data, and supports better decision-making in various sectors.

Abstract Universal healthcare systems orient their actions towards promoting, restoring, and improving public health with a particular focus on the need to guarantee equitable access to care. Unwarranted variation in healthcare delivery poses significant challenges to health systems globally, impacting quality of care, financial sustainability, and equity of access. It is therefore important to assist healthcare management in measuring unwarranted variation in order to prioritise intervention strategies to ensure continuity of care and equity. Through an investigation of geographical variation in visit rates and waiting times, the study identifies vulnerable health districts which need priority interventions for patients with cardiovascular disease in the Tuscany region (Italy). Furthermore, a benchmarking-based method for identifying a quantitative estimate of the supply gap to be reduced is proposed. Results illustrate variation in visit rates and waiting times across local health districts in 2021, with some districts experiencing substantially lower rates and longer waiting times compared to the regional median. To address this gap, two targeted interventions aimed at increasing visit volumes and reduced waiting times through advanced training activities, technology integration, and multidisciplinary collaborations are presented. This study contributes to the topic of unwarranted variation by highlighting the necessity of tailored interventions to address diverse healthcare challenges across heterogeneous geographical areas. As healthcare systems globally navigate evolving complexities, the findings and tools presented here offer valuable guidance for policymakers and managers, aiming towards more equitable, efficient, and responsive healthcare services.

Abstract Background Japanese guidelines recommend triple inhaled corticosteroid (ICS)/long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA)/long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and no concurrent asthma diagnosis who experience frequent exacerbations and have blood eosinophil (EOS) count ≥ 300 cells/mm3, and in patients with COPD and asthma with continuing/worsening symptoms despite receiving dual ICS/LABA therapy. These post-hoc analyses of the KRONOS study in patients with COPD and without an asthma diagnosis, examine the effects of fixed-dose triple therapy with budesonide/glycopyrronium/formoterol fumarate dihydrate (BGF) versus dual therapies on lung function and exacerbations based on blood EOS count – focusing on blood EOS count 100 to 100 cells/mm3, even if disease severity is moderate and there is no recent history of exacerbations. En Colombia, los estudios de calidad del agua se han basado en su gran mayoría en información fisicoquímica o bacteriológica, y solamente en las últimas décadas se ha comenzado a integrar e implementar la bioindicación. El propósito del estudio fue caracterizar la calidad del agua del río Frío, usando macroinvertebrados bentónicos como indicadores biológicos, junto con parámetros fisicoquímicos. Con esta integración entre los índices bióticos y fisicoquímicos se determinó la calidad del agua de forma más precisa, debido a que se generó un acercamiento más detallado al estado del río Frío. Una vez muestreados e identificados los macroinvertebrados, se calcularon los índices de calidad BMWP/Col, ASTP, IBF, EPT, y los índices de biodiversidad Shannon-Weaver, riqueza específica, diversidad de Margalef y Menhinick. El número total de individuos resultado del estudio en la cuenca correspondió a 687, representados por 12 órdenes, 24 familias y 25 géneros. Adicionalmente, se llevaron a cabo un análisis de varianza y un análisis multivariante, a través de una correlación canónica. Finalmente, se determinó que la calidad del agua del río Frío es moderadamente contaminada; además, presenta una baja biodiversidad en las especies de macroinvertebrados, y se encontró que el resultado de los índices son independientes de las temporadas climáticas.

Background: To have proper utilization of blood and its components adherence to established guidelines is essential. Hence, periodic review of blood components is necessary to improve transfusion practices and decrease the inappropriateness of blood components. Aims and Objectives: Our study aims to assess the utilization and appropriateness of blood and blood components in the Department of Clinical Hematology SKIMS, Soura, Srinagar. Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in the Department of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology, SKIMS, Soura, Srinagar, over a period of 1 year from August 2020 to July 2021 on patients admitted in Clinical Hematology requiring transfusion therapy. The number of all blood and blood component units supplied over a period of 1 year was assessed. The usage of different types of blood component was recorded and correlated with the patient’s diagnosis and indications for transfusion. Results: A total of 250 patients were transfused with 2099 blood and blood components, among them 64.32% (1350) units were used appropriately and 35.68% (749) units were used inappropriately. Transfusions of packed red blood cells were found to be inappropriate in patients with asymptomatic chronic anemia with Hemoglobin >7 g/dL. Fresh frozen plasma was given inappropriately in cases of bleeding without derangement of coagulation tests. Inappropriate use of platelets was seen in patients who had received platelets prophylactically with platelet count above 10,000/μL. Conclusion: Proper implementation of guidelines for the use of various blood components would help reduce their inappropriateness.

Abstract Transitional waters are important habitats both for biodiversity and ecological functions, providing valuable natural resources and relevant ecosystem services. However, they are highly susceptible to climate changes and anthropogenic pressures responsible for biodiversity losses and require specific biomonitoring programs. Benthic macroinvertebrates are suitable as ecological indicators of transitional waters, being affected by biological, chemical, and physical conditions of the ecosystems about their life cycles and space-use behaviour. The advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies has allowed biodiversity investigations, at the molecular level, in multiple ecosystems and for different ecological guilds. Benthic macroinvertebrate communities’ composition has been investigated, at the molecular level, mainly through DNA extracted from sediments in marine and riverine ecosystems. In this work, benthic macroinvertebrate communities are explored through eDNA metabarcoding from water samples in a Mediterranean transitional water ecosystem. This research highlighted the validity of eDNA metabarcoding as an efficient tool for the assessment of benthic macroinvertebrate community structure in transitional waters, unveiling the spatial heterogeneity of benthic macroinvertebrate communities correlated to the measured environmental gradients. The results suggest that peculiar features of transitional water ecosystems, such as shallow waters and limited currents, facilitate the assessment of benthic macroinvertebrate communities through environmental DNA analysis from surface water samples, opening for more rapid and accurate monitoring programs for these valuable ecosystems.

Abstract Key message The elapsed times to deplete starch concentrations and to reach a null hydraulic safety margin were related to tree seedling mortality under experimental drought. Starch concentration showed an accelerated decline across all species during the early stages of dehydration, while the concentrations of soluble sugars and total nonstructural carbohydrates remained stable. Concomitant carbohydrate depletion and hydraulic failure drive seedling mortality under drought. Context Current upsurges of drought events are provoking impacts on tree physiology, resulting in forest mortality. Hydraulic dysfunction and nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) depletion have been posited as the main mechanisms leading to plant mortality under drought. Aims This study explores the dynamics of the two mortality-inducing processes during drought stress using an experimental approach with 12 evergreen tree species. Methods Seedlings were subjected to drought until 100% mortality was observed. Midday (ΨMD) and predawn (ΨPD) water potentials, xylem pressure leading to a 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (Ψ50), along with NSC concentrations in different organs (leaves, stems, and roots) were measured regularly during drought. Results Total NSC concentrations and soluble sugar pools did not decline during drought. However, starch pools showed strong reductions early during drought stress as ΨPD decreased, and the time leading to starch depletion emerged as a strong mortality predictor. Ψ50 alone did not provide an accurate estimate of mortality, while the elapsed time to reach a null hydraulic safety margin (ΨMD—Ψ50 = 0) was related to seedling mortality. Conclusion Adopting a dynamic approach by estimating the times to consume both starch reserves and hydraulic safety margins is highly relevant to improve predictions of tree mortality under the current context of increasing global drought.

Nevertheless, the mathematical framework has inherent weaknesses due to the loss of details throughout the averaging procedures. This limitation makes the conventional model inappropriate for some flow regimes, where short-wavelength perturbations experience uncontrolled amplification, leading to solutions that need to be physically accurate. The critical factor in resolving this problem is the integration of closure relations. These relationships play a crucial function in reintroducing essential physical characteristics, thus correcting the loss that occurs during averaging and guaranteeing the stability of the model. To improve the accuracy of predictions, it is essential to assess the stability and grid dependence of one-dimensional formulations, which are particularly affected by closure relations and numerical schemes. The current research presented in the text focuses on improving the well-posedness of the TFM, specifically within the TRACE code, which is widely utilized for nuclear reactor safety assessments. Incorporating a bubble collision model in the momentum equations is demonstrated to enhance the TFM's resilience, especially in scenarios with high void fractions where conventional TFMs may face challenges. The analysis presents a linear stability analysis performed for the transient one-dimensional Two-Fluid Model of system code TRACE within the framework of vertically dispersed flows. The main emphasis is on evaluating the stability characteristics of the model while also acknowledging its susceptibility to closure relations and numerical techniques.

The purpose of the article is to substantiate the author’s position on the relevance of the strategy of a socially oriented bank. The research methodology used in the work includes: a historical method, a systematic method, a method of scientific abstraction and theoretical knowledge, not excluding logical approaches and mathematical calculations. In the course of the research, a scientific hypothesis is put forward about the impossibility of the existence of a socially oriented bank without banking services that differ in criteria from the general market. The conclusions drawn help us to actively discuss the need to increase the level of accessibility of financial services to the population of the country and to raise issues of competition in the banking sector. They broaden the discussion on commercial bank interest rates and their role in stabilising the country’s economy. The author’s position, in the conclusions, reflects the relationship of the bank’s customer, as a part of society and a commercial bank, with its services as a platform for the availability of financial services. The author concludes that there is virtually no competition between the leading banks and that the total cost of the loan varies in the range of 20-40%. Considering the bank’s customers as a part of society, the author raises social issues of financial stability of the country’s citizens through the prism of accessibility of financial services. And the financial stability of the company and the attractiveness of internal financing are important, relevant and complex issues in modern Russia.The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that it explains the relationship between society and the state through financial institutions and the services they provide, reflecting the bank’s social policy as an integral part of its strategy.

Background: Close supervision of HIV infected infants is necessary because of the rapid progression of immune deterioration that may occur in the first months of life. Objectives: To determine the loss to follow-up rate, reasons and associated risk factors among mother-infant pairs in a routine PMTCT programme. Methods: This was a case control study that involved mother-infant pairs enrolled within 72 hours of delivery for follow-up in a PMTCT programme. Loss to follow-up was deemed to have occurred where more than two consecutive visits to the clinic had been missed. The defaulting mother-infant pairs were traced through telephone calls and home visits, where possible. Results: One hundred and seventy-eight mother-infant pairs were enrolled between August 2002 and February 2005, out of which 18 were excluded. Fifty-eight (36.25 percent) of the remaining 160 were lost to follow-up. Among the 58 defaulters, 28 (48.27 percent) could not be traced as a result of false contact addresses. The most common reason for loss to follow up among the 30 mother-infant pairs traced, was apparent good health in the babies. After tracking and counseling, 18 (60 percent) resumed regular follow-up. The mean ages of mothers and babies at the time of default were 28.87 years (SD+4.52 years) and 15.31 weeks (SD+14.05 weeks), respectively. Attainment of post-secondary education, non-membership in a support group and lack of partner notification were associated with increased risk of default. Conclusions: The high loss to follow-up rate from this study highlights the need to improve on the postnatal follow-up of HIV-exposed babies.

Rivers are water bodies in open ecosystems where activities in the environment have an impact on river water quality. Monitoring of water quality is necessary to preserve aquatic resources. One of the river basins on Lombok Island is the Jangkok River. This river has a high utility, so water quality monitoring is needed. Macroinvertebrates are one of the best biological indicators for water quality monitoring. The objective of this study is to determine the diversity of macroinvertebrates and the quality of Jangkok River waters by using macroinvertebrates as bioindicators so that the results of this study can be used as a reference basis for the future use of Jangkok River water in the allocation of community needs. The method used in this research is biomonitoring with macroinvertebrate bioindicators, and the technique used in sampling is purposive sampling. Sampling was conducted at three stations, namely the upstream, middle, and downstream parts of the Jangkok River. The data analysis used was the Family Biotic Index (FBI) supported by physical-chemical parameters. The results of this study showed that the macroinvertebrates identified were 721 individuals consisting of 5 classes, 17 orders, and 36 families. The water quality of the Jangkok River, based on the FBI value in the upstream and middle sections, is still included in the good category, while in the downstream section, it falls into the very bad category.

Objective(s): Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common gynecological malignant tumor and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in women. The progression of CC is significantly affected by autophagy. Our objective was to use bioinformatics analysis to explore the expression, prognostic significance, and immune infiltration of autophagy-related genes in CC. Materials and Methods: We identified a set of autophagy-related differentially expressed genes (ARDEGs) from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. ARDEGs were further validated by The Human Protein Atlas (HPA), GSE52903, and GSE39001 dataset. Hub genes were found by the STRING network and Cytoscape. We performed Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), Gene ontology analysis (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis, and immune infiltration analysis to further understand the functions of the hub genes. Kaplan-Meier (K-M) and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) were used to check the hub genes. Results: A total of 10 up-regulated (CXCR4, BAX, SPHK1, EIF2AK2, TBK1, TNFSF10, ITGB4, CDKN2A, IL24, and BIRC5) and 19 down-regulated (PINK1, ATG16L2, ATG4D, IKBKE, MLST8, MAPK3, ERBB2, ULK3, TP53INP2, MTMR14, BNIP3, FOS, CCL2, FAS, CAPNS1, HSPB8, PTK6, FKBP1B , and DNAJB1) ARDEGs were identified. The ARDEGs were enriched in cell growth, apoptosis, human papillomavirus infection, and cytokine-mediated. Then, we found that low expression of MAPK3 was associated with poor prognosis in CC patients and was significantly enriched in immune pathways. In addition, the expression of MAPK3 was significantly positively correlated with the infiltration levels of macrophages, B cells, mast cell activation, and cancer-associated fibroblasts. Furthermore, MAPK3 was positively correlated with LGALS9, and negatively correlated with CTLA4 and CD40. Conclusion: Our results show that MAPK3 can be used as a new prognostic biomarker to predict the prognosis of patients with CC.

A nonautonomous mathematical model was presented to explore the complex dynamics of disease spread over time, incorporating a time-periodic transmission parameter and imperfections in quarantine, isolation and vaccination strategies. Through a detailed examination of threshold dynamics, it was revealed that the global dynamics of disease transmission are influenced by the basic reproduction number ($ \mathcal{R}_0 $), a critical threshold that determines extinction, persistence, and the presence of periodic solutions. It was shown that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable if $ \mathcal{R}_0 < 1 $, while the disease persists if $ \mathcal{R}_0 > 1 $. To support and validate our analytical results, the basic reproduction number and the dynamics of the disease were estimated by fitting monthly data from two Asian countries, namely Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis of the time-averaged reproduction number ($ \langle \mathcal{R}_0 \rangle $) of the associated time-varying model showed a significant sensitivity to key parameters such as infection rates, quarantine rate, vaccine coverage rate, and recovery rates, supported by numerical simulations. These simulations validated theoretical findings and explored the impact of seasonal contact rate, imperfect quarantine, isolation, imperfect vaccination, and other parameters on the dynamics of measles transmission. The results showed that increasing the rate of immunization, improving vaccine management, and raising public awareness can reduce the incidence of the epidemic. The study highlighted the importance of understanding these patterns to prevent future periodic epidemics.

Biofilm formation is one of main causes of bacterial antimicrobial resistance infections. It is known that the soluble lectins LecA and LecB, produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, play a key role in biofilm formation and lung infection. Bacterial lectins are therefore attractive targets for the development of new antibiotic-sparing anti-infective drugs. Building synthetic glycoconjugates for the inhibition and modulation of bacterial lectins have shown promising results. Light-sensitive lectin ligands could allow the modulation of lectins activity with precise spatiotemporal control. Despite the potential of photoswitchable tools, few photochromic lectin ligands have been developed. We have designed and synthesized several O- and S-galactosyl azobenzenes as photoswitchable ligands of LecA and evaluated their binding affinity with isothermal titration calorimetry. We show that the synthesized monovalent glycoligands possess excellent photophysical properties and strong affinity for targeted LecA with Kd values in the micromolar range. Analysis of the thermodynamic contribution indicates that the Z-azobenzene isomers have a systematically stronger favorable enthalpy contribution than the corresponding E-isomers, but due to stronger unfavorable entropy, they are in general of lower affinity. The validation of this proof-of-concept and the dissection of thermodynamics of binding will help for the further development of lectin ligands that can be controlled by light.

Objective To investigate the feasibility of leucocyte-reduced pooled platelet concentrates from whole blood stored at 4℃, and provide theoretical basis for the components preparation. Methods The collected 400 mL ACD-B anticoagulant whole blood was randomly divided into two groups, stored at 4℃ and room temperature. The buffy coat was prepared within 6 hours and store at 22℃ until next day to prepare leucocyte-reduced pooled platelet concentrates. Platelet samples on day 1, 3, 5 and 7 were taken for the blood cell count and related parameter detection. The pH, glucose and lactic acid content were determined to reflect the metabolic status, and the thromboelastography, platelet aggregation rate and PAC-1 and CD62P expression were determined to reflect the function and activation of platelets. The difference in platelets between two groups were analyzed. Results With the extension of storage time, the count of leucocyte-reduced pooled platelet concentrates decreased gradually, but the platelets distribution width (PDW), mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet-larger cell ratio (P-LCR) increased gradually in two groups, with no statistical significance (P>0.05).The pH and glucose contents in two groups gradually decreased, but the lactic acid content gradually increased, with no significant difference (P>0.05). The thrombelastogram showed MA value that reflecting platelet function has no significant change during the storage, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). The aggregation rates decreased while the expression of PAC-1 and CD62P increased gradually with the prolongation of preservation time, with no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion There is no significant difference in platelet count, function and activation between whole blood stored at 4℃ and at room temperature within 6 hours. Whole blood stored at 4℃ within 6 hours can be considered as the raw material for leucocyte-reduced pooled platelet concentrates.

This commentary outlines the strategies implemented by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) through national health policies and initiatives. These strategies aim to enable sustainable actions for CVDs prevention and control by addressing key risk factors, such as tobacco use, unhealthy dietary habits, and physical inactivity. Assessment of cardiovascular risk is fundamental for early detection and timely treatment. The UAE has reported the availability of essential medicines and basic technologies for preventing heart attack and stroke. Future directions include improving data reporting systems to provide up-to-date statistics on CVDs prevalence and risk factors, including diet, physical activity, body weight, smoking, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol control. In addition, these efforts will cover data on the quality of care, procedures, and economic costs. Strengthening collaboration between academic research institutes and government policymakers is crucial for shaping the UAE’s research agenda. Key steps to further reduce the burden of CVDs in the UAE include enhancing primary health care and emergency medical services, building health-care worker capacity, and improving the accessibility and affordability of priority interventions.

Background: Limited research has addressed breastfeeding practices and challenges faced by mothers during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the United Arab Emirates. The recommendation on whether to continue or initiate breastfeeding among mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 was contradictory. This study aimed to explore breastfeeding practices and challenges faced by mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this online, cross-sectional study, 249 mothers who delivered during the COVID-19 pandemic were recruited. The questionnaire included sociodemographic and anthropometric questions related to delivery experience and infant health, attitudes toward breastfeeding practices, breastfeeding knowledge, behaviors during COVID-19, and concerns and challenges related to COVID-19. Results: Most participants (90.8%) breastfed their infants, of whom only 28.5% exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months. Among mothers who were infected with COVID-19, approximately 90.7% were not given precautionary instructions by the health-care professionals during breastfeeding, 67.6% had breastfed their infants, 27% were isolated from their infants, and 50% were not able to visit their infants during infection. Abstract Background Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) are integral leaders of health care organisation. Over the last two decades in United States (US) hospitals, it has been noted that CEO turnover rates are increasing, and it was reported that the CEO turnover rates have augmented from 14% in 2008 to 18% in 2017 in the private sector. In Australia, it was discovered that during two years, 41 executives had 18 distinct positions. It has been highlighted that the increasing CEO turnover is a major issue for Australian and international health care organisations. Some of the negative consequences of CEO turnover include organisational instability, high financial costs, loss of human capital and adverse effects on staff morale and patient care. Objective Our scoping review aimed to map and summarise the evidence associated with CEO turnovers in both health and non-health setting, and answer the following questions: 1. What are the reasons for CEO departure?, 2. What are the strategies to minimise CEO turnover? Results A protocol explaining the objectives, inclusion criteria and methods for this scoping review were specified in advance and published. This scoping review included 17 studies (13 health and 4 non-health setting) published over a 31-year period that investigated and described the increasing CEO turnover rates. All 17 studies identified causes of CEO turnover along with certain studies identifying facilitators of CEO retention. We classified CEO’s departure reasons into three major themes: organizational, performance, and personal. Organisational factors include CEO departures due to issues within the organisation, performance factors include issues with CEO’s work and personal factors captures personal reasons for CEO’s leaving their job. Conclusion CEOs are under immense pressure to deliver good results and drive growth while satisfying the interests of internal and external stakeholders. There are various reasons for CEO’s departure however the most common factor identified is organisational.

The search for bioactive components effective in the treatment of COPD has become a focal point of research. Beetroot juice, readily accessible and cost-effective, is noted for its ability to enhance athletic performance and for its preventive and therapeutic impact on hypertension. Beetroot juice is a rich source of dietary nitrates and modulates physiological processes via the nitrate-nitrite- nitric oxide pathway, exerting multiple beneficial effects such as antihypertensive, bronchodilatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and lipid-lowering actions. This paper provides a review of the existing research on the effects of beetroot juice on COPD, summarizing its potential in enhancing exercise capacity, lowering blood pressure, improving vascular function, and ameliorating sleep quality among patients with COPD. The review serves as a reference for the prospective use of beetroot juice in the symptomatic improvement of COPD, as well as in the prevention of exacerbations and associated comorbidities.Keywords: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, beetroot, nitrates, nitric oxide, exercise, vascular function

High elevation fossil deposits in Cuba have been poorly studied, and there is a limited understanding of how altitudinal changes could have affected the composition of faunal communities in the past. Here, we report fossils of 13 vertebrate species and an invertebrate from 11 late Quaternary cave deposits at elevations ranging from 532 to 1123 meters above sea level, located in the Guamuhaya Masiff in central Cuba. The composition of the vertebrate fauna assemblages recovered from these localities resembles that known from other lowland deposits and includes eight extinct, one extirpated, and four extant species. Furthermore, the specimens reported here record the highest elevation known for nine species recovered.

Acanthoic acid, a diterpene isolated from the root bark of Acanthopanax koreanum Nakai, possesses diverse pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, gastrointestinal protection, and cardiovascular protection. This study is the first to investigate the egg-hatching rates of Drosophila melanogaster affected by acanthoic acid. Notably, male flies supplemented with 10 μM acanthoic acid exhibited a strong increase in hatching rates compared with controls under adverse temperature conditions, suggesting a potential protective effect against environmental stressors. Molecular docking simulations revealed the binding affinities and specific interactions between acanthoic acid and proteins related to male infertility, including SHBG, ADAM17, and DNase I, with binding affinity values of −10.2, −6.8, and −5.8 kcal/mol, respectively. Following the docking studies, molecular dynamic simulations were conducted for a duration of 100 ns to examine the stability of these interactions. Additionally, a total binding energy analysis and decomposition analysis offered insights into the underlying energetic components and identified key contributing residues.

Abstract The components in our food are known as one of the important risk factors for the development of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. A balanced diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, and free of fat, sugar, and salt, might protect people from the consequences of H. pylori infection. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between ultra‐processed foods (UPFs) intake and the risk of H. pylori infection. The case–control study was conducted to assess the intake of UPFs in patients with H. pylori infection compared with healthy individuals. The dietary data of the contributors were collected by a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). To estimate the UPFs intake, the classification of the NOVA food group was utilized. The associations of intake UPFs with H. pylori infection were assessed using binary logistic regression. Finally, dietary data of 150 cases and 302 controls (mean age: 39.5 ± 10.95 years) were analyzed. UPFs intake was associated with higher risk of H. pylori infection (odds ratio (OR) = 1.71; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05, 2.79). The association remained constant after adjustment for age, body mass index (BMI), sex, energy intake, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol status (OR = 2.17; 95% CI: 1.22, 3.86). Our data declare that UPFs consumption could have a role in increasing the likelihood of the risk of H. pylori infection. To confirm the current findings, prospective studies are suggested.
