Reducing the carbon footprint of higher education institutions has become a global trend in recent years, as they are the axis of society's scientific and technological transformation that must be carried out with a sustainable approach. Among the many approaches that can contribute to this problem are the digital transformation of academic and administrative processes and its impact on reducing paper use. This study details the statistical analysis of the digital transformation process based on the modules and computer services implemented by the ICT department in a higher education institution and its incidence in reducing the use of paper by its teaching and administrative staff. For this purpose, an initial instrument was proposed, consisting of 18 ordinal, three categorical and two numerical variables. After applying statistical data processing and validation techniques, it was reduced to 13 ordinal variables, three categorical and two influential numerical variables. In addition, this study has proposed an appropriate statistical protocol for the design and extraction of information applicable in the context of higher education institutions, consisting of the techniques: Mahalanobis distances, confirmatory factor analysis, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney's U and Wilcoxon tests. The results showed the power of confirmatory factor analysis as a technique for obtaining models to measure indirectly observed latent variables, such as perceptions of digital transformation and paper reduction. In addition, it was found that the modules, systems, and computer tools implemented in the institution significantly reduced the execution times for performing administrative and teaching tasks in the institution, and significant differences were identified in the perception of digital transformation and reduction of paper use among staff.

Abstract Developing a portable yet affordable method for the discrimination of chemical substances with good sensitivity and selectivity is essential for on-site visual detection of unknown substances. Herein, we propose an optofluidic paper-based analytical device (PAD) that consists of a macromolecule-driven flow (MDF) gate and photonic crystal (PhC) coding units, enabling portable and scalable detection and discrimination of various organic chemical, mimicking the olfactory system. The MDF gate is designed for precise flow control of liquid analytes, which depends on intermolecular interactions between the polymer at the MDF gate and the liquid analytes. Subsequently, the PhC coding unit allows for visualizing the result obtained from the MDF gate and generating differential optical patterns. We fabricate an optofluidic PAD by integrating two coding units into a three-dimensional (3D) microfluidic paper within a 3D-printed cartridge. The optofluidic PADs clearly distinguish 11 organic chemicals with digital readout of pattern recognition from colorimetric signals. We believe that our optofluidic coding strategy mimicking the olfactory system opens up a wide range of potential applications in colorimetric monitoring of chemicals observed in environment.

Using the fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Aspergillus niger as a biopretreatment agent to improve degradation of lignocellulosic paper with analogous increase in biogas production, anaerobic digestion (AD) was executed. Milled and hydrothermally-treated (HT) or steamed paper were separately inoculated for 360 hr at 28 °C with each fungal species, with an uninoculated treatment as control. AD experiment was conducted in bench-scale batch bioreactors for 48 days at 40°C. The initial characteristics of the feedstock and inoculum were examined in addition to biomethane yield, total and volatile solids degradation, and lignocellulosic content removal. The pretreatment of milled paper with P. chrysosporium resulted in the highest biogas yield of 1035 mL/gVS, followed by A. niger with a yield of 550 mL/gVS. These values represented a significant increase (p < 0.05) of 226 % and 73 % compared to the untreated feedstock, respectively. P. chrysosporium pretreatment achieved the highest total solids removal of 66.85 %, whereas A. niger pretreatment resulted in the maximum volatile solids removal of 64.63 % in HT-paper waste. P. chrysosporium also exhibited the highest lignin removal efficiency, with 84.31 % in milled feedstock and 79.17 % in the steamed state. Abstract Paper finishing, in particular, coating paper with desired barrier functions is well‐developed as of today. However, due to large amounts of material and process energy as well as the use of non‐renewable resources for such coatings, common technologies are not sustainable. Given the increasing importance of paper in manifold applications, more sustainable routes with low‐energy processes as well as biogenic material alternatives are highly needed. To address this challenge, a solvent‐free and material‐efficient approach is proposed to bio‐based paper coatings by depositing chia oil‐based plasma polymers using a jet‐induced sliding discharge concept at atmospheric pressure. Depending on the amount of coating and the paper porosity, this treatment retards water absorption. Coating visualization is enabled through confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Like chia oil, safflower oil, and olive oil show the ability to hydrophobize paper and the great potential within plasma polymerized vegetable oils to make the paper coating more sustainable.

Abstract We introduce a groundbreaking proof-of-concept for a novel glucose monitoring transducing mechanism, marking the first demonstration of a spore-forming microbial whole-cell sensing platform. The approach uses selective and sensitive germination of Bacillus subtilis spores in response to glucose in potassium-rich bodily fluids such as sweat. As the rate of germination and the number of metabolically active germinating cells are directly proportional to glucose concentration, the electrogenic activity of these cells—manifested as electricity—serves as a self-powered transducing signal for glucose detection. Within a microengineered, paper-based microbial fuel cell (MFC), these electrical power outputs are measurable and can be visually displayed through a compact interface, providing real-time alerts. The dormant spores extend shelf-life, and the self-replicating bacteria ensure robustness. The MFC demonstrated a remarkable sensitivity of 2.246 µW·(log mM)−1·cm−2 to glucose concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 10 mM, with a notably lower limit of detection at ~0.07 mM. The sensor exhibited exceptional selectivity, accurately detecting glucose even in the presence of various interferents. Comparative analyses revealed that, unlike conventional enzymatic biosensors whose performance degrades significantly through time even when inactive, the spore-based MFC is stable for extended periods and promptly regains functionality when needed. This preliminary investigation indicates that the spore-forming microbial whole-cell sensing strategy holds considerable promise for efficient diabetes management and can be extended toward noninvasive wearable monitoring, overcoming critical challenges of current technologies and paving the way for advanced biosensing applications.

Abstract Early and accurate diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is essential for timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and prevention of new infections. However, conventional nucleic-acid-based tests for HIV detection require sophisticated laboratory equipment and trained personnel, which are often unavailable at the point-of-care (POC) or unaffordable in resource-limited settings. We report our development of a low-cost, integrated platform for POC testing of HIV. The platform integrates viral nucleic acid extraction on a paper substrate and reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) in a portable, battery-powered heating device with real-time detection. The platform does not require laboratory infrastructure such as power outlets. The assay showed a detection limit of 30 copies/mL of HIV RNA in 140 μL human serum or 4 copies/reaction using 50 μL human serum, with no cross-reactivity with hepatitis C virus (HCV). We validated the platform using both plasma samples spiked with HIV and clinical samples from HIV-positive individuals, and compared it with standard laboratory assays based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR). These results demonstrate the feasibility of our platform for HIV testing at the POC.

Abstract Co‐contamination of mycotoxins produced by fungi in foodstuffs and feeds causes a tremendous health risk to humans and animals. The simultaneous detection of multiple mycotoxins using a cost‐effective and point‐of‐care technology is key to ensuring food safety. In this study, a disposable biosensor with two individual sensing channels is prepared on an affordable cellulose paper substrate and used to simultaneously detect fumatoxin B1 (FB1) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). The biosensor pattern is outlined by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and the hydrophobic interface of the sensing channels is created using octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). Semiconducting single‐wall carbon nanotubes (s‐SWCNTs) are deposited onto the central zones to serve as the sensing elements and SWCNTs are deposited into the bilateral areas as wire. After functionalization of the s‐SWCNTs, anti‐FB1 and anti‐AFB1 are separately immobilized on the different sensing regions to capture the targeted mycotoxins. Under the optimal conditions, this developed s‐SWCNTs‐based biosensor array achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 8.23 pg mL−1 for FB1 and 7.48 pg mL−1 for AFB1. As a demonstration, spiked corn samples are measured using this biosensor and recovery rates are not inferior to commercial enzyme‐linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Overall, the cost‐effective, highly sensitive, and multiplexed biosensor platform fabricated by this approach shows great potential for detecting multiple mycotoxins.

Highlights The large-scale, high-strength, super-tough, and multifunctional nacre-like heterocyclic aramid (HA)/MXene@polypyrrole (PPy) (HMP) nanocomposite papers were fabricated using the in-situ assembly of PPy onto the HA/MXene hydrogel template. The "brick-and-mortar" layered structure and abundant hydrogen-bonding interactions among MXene, PPy, and HA respond cooperatively to external stress and effectively increase the mechanical properties of HMP nanocomposite papers. The templating effect from HA/MXene was utilized to guide the assembly of conducting polymers, leading to high electrical conductivity and outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding performance.

Highlights A blade-coated composite paste, composed of a compressible 3D carbon skeleton, PEDOT:PSS, and CNTs, can naturally dry to form a porous electrode on paper with a micro- and nano-structured surface. The all-paper pressure sensor demonstrated an ultrahigh sensitivity of 1014 kPa−1, a wide responsive range up to 300 kPa, and an ultralow operating voltage of 0.01 V. The sensor showcased superior detection capability, ranging from subtle wrist pulses and robust finger taps to large-area spatial force.

This research was designed to assess the yield and quality of ash prepared from different types of waste papers. Waste newspapers, writing papers, and cartons were selected for combustion to obtain the ashes and coded as WNPA, WWPA, and WCPA, respectively. The waste papers were incinerated simultaneously in separate but identical incinerators at 850 ℃. An experiment on the yield of the ashes was performed on two days before the ashes obtained were mixed based on the type of waste papers from which they were derived. The results showed that irrespective of the day and time, the WCPA was the most yielded (14.1%), followed by the WWPA (12.3%), and then the WNPA (11.9%). Also, it was found that all the ashes possessed flow properties acceptable for engineering applications. However, the WCPA would ensure the best performance if applied, especially as a partial replacement material for cement. While the WWPA was found to be richer than the WNPA, the WCPA was the richest in terms of the proportions of key oxides for strength development. In general, the percentages of various chemical components of each ash complied with the standard specifications for cement except in the case of losses on ignition of the WNPA and WWPA, which were about 0.53% and 0.02%, respectively, beyond the maximum stipulated value.

The successful separation of a single sheet from a stack of paper is considered a paper-handling goal when using a robot hand. Under the condition of uncertain friction coefficients, a stochastic algorithm introducing randomness is formulated, which converges a paper stack to a state of single-sheet separation through the repetition of simple robot operations. This formulation is based on the proposed motion strategy for a robotic hand, which introduces a state of a partially separated paper bundle to temporarily allow the simultaneous separation of multiple sheets and a return operation to return the paper to the original paper bundle. The experimental results indicate that a single sheet can be completely separated from a vertically standing stack of business-card-sized papers by shifting the paper in a high-speed translational movement using two fingers of the robot hand that grasp the paper from both sides.

A unique triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) using carbon nanotube (CNT) composite papers is proposed in this work. CNT composite papers can be fabricated easily using a method based on the production of Japanese washi paper. To obtain and evaluate the proposed TENGs, several types of CNT composite papers and aluminum plates were prepared. As the CNT composite paper contained many paper fibers, it was expected to be negatively charged, and the aluminum plate was expected to be positively charged across the triboelectric series. Through various experiments, it was confirmed that CNT composite papers could be used as TENGs. In addition, it was found that when a CNT composite paper was used, it contributed to triboelectricity generation, and the contained CNTs efficiently transferred the generated charge to the electrodes. Furthermore, output voltages approaching a maximum RMS value of 300 mV could be obtained. The results of this study will aid in the practical application of paper-based TENGs in the near future.

Abstract 3D tissue‐engineered models are poised to facilitate understanding of skeletal muscle pathophysiology and identify novel therapeutic agents to improve muscle health. Adopting these culture models within the broader biology community is a challenge as many models involve complex methodologies and significant investments of time and resources to optimize manufacturing protocols. To alleviate this barrier, a protocol with commercially available reagents is developed to cryopreserve myoblasts in a 96‐well compatible format that allows tissues to be transferred to users without expertise in 2D or 3D skeletal muscle cell culture. This report validates that myoblasts encapsulated in a hydrogel and cryopreserved in paper‐based scaffolds maintain cell viability, differentiation, and function via acetylcholine‐induced transient calcium responses. Furthermore, successful shipping of myoblasts cryopreserved in paper‐based scaffolds to intra‐provincial and international collaborators is demonstrated who successfully thaw, culture, and use the 3D muscle tissues. Finally, the application of this method is confirmed for studying muscle endogenous repair by seeding freshly isolated skeletal muscle stem cells to cryopreserved then differentiated and injured tissues, demonstrating expected responses to a known stimulator of muscle stem cell self‐renewal, p38α/β MAPKi. Altogether, the 3D myoblast cryopreservation protocol offers broadened access of a complex skeletal muscle tissue model to the research community.

It is more important to improve and complete the wastewater process in order to reuse and return it to the production line. In this study, the hydrogen peroxide/ozone process (Peroxone) was investigated as a supplementary step in paper mill wastewater treatment to reduce the amount of chemical oxygen demand and remove E. coli. In this regard, using the Box-Behnken Design method based on the response surface method to optimize and investigate the effect of three variables governing the ozonation process, including the amount of hydrogen peroxide consumed (ml), the amount of ozone input (mg/min) and ozonation time (min) were used. The results showed that the amount of ozone and hydrogen peroxide had the greatest effect for reducing COD (up to about 75%). Also, all three variables have played a significant role in increasing the efficiency of the Peroxone process and even completely eliminating E. coli. In determining the optimal conditions, the amount of ozone (146 mg/min), the amount of hydrogen peroxide (2ml) and the duration of ozonation (23 min), the lowest amount of residual COD (73 mg/L) and the highest efficiency (75% removal of E. coli) are predicted. The results showed that due to the interaction of ozone and hydrogen peroxide, the peroxone process performance was less efficient than the ozonation process alone.

The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of two of the most prevalent agricultural residues in Ecuador, banana peels and pineapple peels, as a carbon source in the culture medium of Komagataeibacter hansenii for the production of bacterial cellulose (BC) and BC-based paper. This analysis includes an assessment of the productivity parameters of the obtained BC and the quality parameters of the BC-based paper, employing multivariate statistical methodologies. The experimental design consisted of fifteen treatments: T1 served as the control using the standard HS medium, while treatments T2–T8 used banana peel extracts (BPE), and treatments T9–T15 used pineapple peel extracts (PPE) at concentrations from 10% to 40% (v/v). Extracts were prepared with tailored pretreatments for each type of peel to optimize bioactive compound recovery. Standardized fermentation and purification conditions were applied, and once the cellulose was obtained, additives and coating agents were incorporated to produce paper samples from each treatment. The results indicated that higher BPE concentrations (T5, T6, T7, and T8) correlated significantly with increased Weight and Yield of BC, as well as improved grammage and water content in the BC-based paper. This highlights that efficient paper production is influenced by the quality of the bacterial cellulose used, with BPE-based media yielding optimal results due to their nutrient composition, which promotes bacterial growth and metabolic activity. This approach suggests a pathway for advancing sustainable and economical paper production.

With the advent of artificial intelligence digitization, intangible cultural heritage faces challenges in preservation and transmission. Utilizing modern technology to achieve digital protection and dissemination has become a crucial issue today. This study enhances the digital inheritance and development of Chinese intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting art through generative AI technologies, specifically Diffusion and LoRA models. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to categorize the cultural value of paper-cutting, selecting four core elements: “Spring Festival”, “Chinese Zodiac”, “Women”, and “Birds and Flowers”. Based on these, eight LoRA models were developed to generate paper-cutting-style patterns (using the FLUX.1-dev and Stable Diffusion 1.5 models). In the user satisfaction assessment, the Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) method was used to analyze four dimensions of the model experience. The results indicate that the LoRA model excels in generating detailed paper-cutting patterns and accurately reproducing cultural elements, particularly in the generation of complex Chinese character designs. User feedback suggests that the LoRA model effectively enhances the digital representation and dissemination of paper-cutting art, though there is room for improvement in terms of generation speed and ease of operation. This study provides a new technological pathway for the digital preservation of intangible cultural heritage and promotes the modernization of paper-cutting art transmission.

The subject of this study is the optimization of the paper production process in one of Poland’s leading paper mills. In addition to its primary objective of paper production, the company generates heat and electricity for internal consumption and external clients, including the local municipality. Surplus energy may be sold on the power exchange; however, this requires forecasting the quantity of energy to be sold 24 h in advance, which introduces an element of uncertainty. Production stoppages, often caused by random events such as paper breakage, force a power decrease in the CHP system, further complicating energy forecasting. To minimize the occurrence of such events, numerical taxonomy methods were employed to determine the optimal screen speed (Vs) and winding speed (Vn) for two paper machines, based on the type and weight of the paper produced. This analysis utilized detailed daily data collected by the company over the period 2015–2020. The findings contribute to minimizing the occurrence of paper roll tearing, thereby reducing the risk of inaccurate forecasts of the energy and heat produced by the CHP system. Furthermore, the methodology employed in this study may be effectively applied to other optimization problems in industrial processes.

Abstract Home‐based Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) for viral infections would be an important step to improve public health, but sample preparation remains an important obstacle, particularly for the protection of target RNA from RNases in samples. Here, a new method for RNase deactivation in saliva samples is presented. This method uses Proteinase K (PK) immobilized on nitrocellulose membrane to store and deliver the enzyme, capable of digesting nucleases present in the sample. The immobilized PK is also separated from the amplification reagents, so that it does not disrupt DNA amplification, thus omitting the need for heat‐deactivation or dilution steps. Treatment by PK nitrocellulose at 50 °C dramatically decreases the RNase activity of RNase A, in diluted saliva samples, and even shows promising results at 42 °C. The potential of this method to protect RNA from digestion is further demonstrated, by pretreating diluted saliva samples spiked with Influenza Virus A (IVA) genomic RNA, which allows its amplification and colorimetric detection by lateral flow strips. In the absence of PK pretreatment, the RNA is digested by RNase, which leads to false negative results. These findings show that immobilized PK enables the integration of sample preparation of viral samples toward home‐based NAATs.

To improve the accuracy and efficiency of the aging life prediction and assessment of transformer oil-paper insulation, and to make up for the deficiencies of traditional characterizers, such as 2-furfural, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, a method for the simultaneous determination of methanol, ethanol, $n-\mathbf{propanol}$, and $n$-butanol in oil with a single injection is established by headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The measured results show that the determination limits of the four alcohol characterizers can be controlled to $\mathbf{10}\ \mu \mathbf{g}/\mathbf{kg}$ level. Based on this method, the change patterns of the above four alcohols with thermal aging time and degree of polymerization are obtained through thermal aging experimental research. Ethanol, $n$-propanol, and $n$-butanol in oil indicate nearly linear correlations with thermal aging time and degree of polymerization, similar to that of methanol. By analyzing 52 sets of measured data of 500 kV EHV transformers in operation, $n$-butanol is found to have excellent performance, and a new method to evaluate the aging state of oil-paper insulation employing $n$-butanol and methanol is proposed along with the aging attention value model. The measured data of 500 kV EHV transformers in operation indicate that the combination of $n$-butanol and methanol as the preferred characterizers can effectively compensate for the shortcoming of traditional characterizers in the early stages of aging, and the feasibility of the method is verified. Two possible pathways for the generation of $n$-butanol by cellulose cleavage during the aging of oil-paper are proposed from the chemical structure of cellulose.

This study investigates the impact of zirconium-based KZC series crosslinkers with varying zirconium contents and the polyamine-based crosslinker (PBC) on the properties of coated paper, focusing on key performance metrics such as viscosity, wet rub and pick resistance, dry pick resistance, gloss, brightness, ink set-off, and print mottle. The findings reveal that crosslinkers’ type and concentration significantly influence the coating colors’ viscosity, with PBC demonstrating lower low shear viscosity at lower concentrations. The KZC series showed stable viscosity across a zirconium content range of 7% to 20%, and both crosslinker types enhanced wet rub resistance at higher concentrations. Notably, the KZC series, particularly KZC7, exhibited superior wet pick resistance at increased concentrations, highlighting its effectiveness in enhancing the durability of the coating layer. All crosslinkers maintained excellent dry pick resistance, ensuring robust coating performance. While gloss and brightness were generally unaffected, KZC20, which had the highest zirconium content, slightly reduced these optical properties. Ink set-off tests indicated that the KZC series performed better at lower concentrations, whereas higher concentrations led to increased ink set-off, potentially due to over-crosslinking. Print mottle remained consistent across all crosslinkers, indicating uniform coating quality. Overall, the zirconium-based KZC series significantly enhances wet resistance and maintains high performance across various properties, though it may slightly reduce gloss and brightness and increase ink set-off at higher concentrations. PBC offers a balanced performance profile, emphasizing the need for careful crosslinker type and concentration optimization to achieve the desired coating properties for specific applications. This comprehensive evaluation provides valuable insights for developing and optimizing high-performance coated papers.

To eliminate the problem of the aging of cellulose insulation in the manufacturing stage, a new drying method is being developed based on the use of methanol vapors. Previous studies have shown that the complete removal of methanol from the cellulose insulation after the drying process is very difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to check how the remaining methanol after drying affects the properties of both the cellulose materials and mineral oil. To conduct such studies, it is necessary to know the methanol content in oil that can be expected depending on its initial content in the cellulose materials and the temperature of the insulation system. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to develop methanol equilibrium curves for oil–paper insulation. To achieve the assumed goal, three-stage studies were conducted. A gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector was used in all stages of these studies. The gas partition coefficient between oil and air was determined for a temperature of 70 °C. The key experimental finding was the development of methanol equilibrium curves for oil–paper insulation. Thanks to this achievement, it is possible to estimate the methanol content in cellulose materials and mineral oil depending on the insulation temperature. Such data are necessary, among others, to plan appropriate studies aimed at assessing the impact of methanol content on the dielectric and physicochemical properties of these materials, important from the point of view of the operation of power transformers.

In order to reveal the migration and evolution of gas molecules in the actual oil–paper insulation composite system of transformer from the molecular level, the diffusion behavior of seven gas molecules (H2, CO, CO2, CH4, C2H2, C2H4, C2H6) generated during the operation and aging of oil-immersed transformers in the oil–paper composite insulation system is studied by molecular dynamics. Firstly, based on the molecular dynamics software, the model of the oil–paper composite insulation system and the gas molecule model is constructed. In order to compare and analyze the diffusion properties of gas molecules in a single medium, a single model of insulating oil and cellulose is also constructed. Then, the diffusion coefficients of gas molecules in the insulating oil, cellulose, and oil–paper insulating composite system are simulated and calculated. And the differences in the diffusion properties of gas molecules in the three insulating mediums are discussed. Finally, the microscopic mechanism of diffusion of different gas molecules in the three mediums is analyzed. The simulation results show that among the three mediums, the diffusion coefficient of H2 is the largest, while the diffusion coefficients of the other gas molecules are not very different. The diffusion coefficients of the seven gas molecules are the smallest in the oil-immersed paper composite insulation system, followed by cellulose, while the diffusion coefficients are the largest in mineral oil. It indicates that the diffusion of gas molecules is inhibited in oil–paper insulation systems where the insulating paper is completely immersed in oil. This is mainly due to the fact that the insulating oil completely penetrates into the paper, filling the pores and voids between the fibers, resulting in a reduction in the transition vacancies of the intermediate gas molecules, which hinders the diffusion of the gas molecules.

The pulp and paper industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint. This study examines the feasibility of integrating high-temperature heat pumps (HTHP) into tissue paper production to enhance energy efficiency and decarbonization. Focusing on the energy-intensive drying process, the study uses data from a typical tissue paper mill to simulate and optimize an HTHP system producing four tons per hour of nine-bar saturated steam. It also addresses necessary modifications for HTHP integration applicable across the sector. Various refrigerants were analyzed, achieving a maximum coefficient of performance (COP) of 2.01. Results showed that HTHP can reduce energy consumption and emissions by up to 17% and 40%, respectively, based on the European electricity mix. Although steam production costs increase by 55% compared to fossil fuel-based systems, HTHP is more cost-effective than direct electric resistance heating, which raises costs by 196%. With a CO2 price of EUR 100/t, HTHP offers a 12% cost reduction. However, without public funding, capital expenditures may be unsustainable in many regions, though viable in countries with favorable gas and electricity price differentials. The paper underscores the need for advancements in HTHP technology and cost reductions, emphasizing industry adaptation for seamless HTHP integration.

The research results and evaluation of the applicability of the original composition of hybrid paper based on silver nanowires (AgNWs), cellulose pulp (CP), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented and discussed. The material tested was used to manufacture sensors for mechanical deformation resulting from external influences or related to human activity interactions. The sensors were fabricated using an AgNWs + CP suspension and additives by the vacuum filtration method. The substrate obtained was machined and then laminated with a layer of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The recorded responses to selected types of imposed mechanical interactions in the form of changes in the relative resistance of the sensor throughout the tests showed a close cause-and-effect relationship. The response of the tested systems when applying an alternating magnetic field was also observed. The results indicate that the proposed solutions can find application in the monitoring of mechanical interactions resulting from the dynamic behavior of physical objects, as well as derived from selected human vital functions.

Abstract This study identifies important factors for designing an effective biomimetic paper‐based fog harvesting substrate by examining the harvesting properties of different surfaces, including glass, polyethylene, and superhydrophobic paper. In laboratory‐scale fogging tests, the wetting behavior of the substrates is characterized, and the importance of the tilt angle of the respective surface relative to the fog flow is elaborated. Because successful fog harvesting requires both efficient accumulation of water droplets on the surface (by condensation and collision) and sufficient but not excessive roll‐off of the liquid, the amount of water finally collected is clearly related to the pinning effect, which should prevent the smallest droplets from being carried away by the wind but must not lead to full and permanent wetting of the surface. Coalescence is identified as a major phenomenon to improve droplet roll‐off. In this context, superhydrophobic paper indicates to be a more effective water collector than glass or polyethylene, especially when oriented vertically, since it allows the droplets to roll off very efficiently. Finally, the addition of glass particles to the superhydrophobic coating is proposed as a means of enhancing pinning and improving the fog harvesting efficiency.

Abstract We report an innovative and facile approach to fabricating an ultrasensitive plasmonic paper substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The approach exploits the self-assembling capability of poly(styrene-b-2-vinyl pyridine) block copolymers to form a thin film at the air-liquid interface within the single microdroplet scale for the first time and the subsequent in situ growth of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The concentration of the block copolymer was found to play an essential role in stabilizing the droplets during the mass transfer phase and formation of silver nanoparticles, thus influencing the SERS signals. SEM analysis of the morphology of the plasmonic paper substrates revealed the formation of spherical AgNPs evenly distributed across the surface of the formed copolymer film with a size distribution of 47.5 nm. The resultant enhancement factor was calculated to be 1.2 × 107, and the detection limit of rhodamine 6G was as low as 48.9 pM. The nanohybridized plasmonic paper was successfully applied to detect two emerging pollutants—sildenafil and flibanserin—with LODs as low as 1.48 nM and 3.45 nM, respectively. Thus, this study offers new prospects for designing an affordable and readily available, yet highly sensitive, paper-based SERS substrate with the potential for development as a lab-on-a-chip device.

In this research, the ozonation process has been used as a supplementary stage of purification to reduce the amount of chemical oxygen demand and remove bacteria, especially E. Coli, from the effluent of the paper industry. Box-Behnken Design statistical method is used to optimize the treatment conditions. In this method, the effect of three variables governing the ozonation process, including the initial pH of the effluent, the amount of input ozone (mg/min) O3 and the duration of ozonation (min) t, was investigated. The results showed that the amount of input ozone and pH had the greatest impact on reducing COD (up to about 80%). Also, the maximum efficiency of the ozonation process for the complete removal of E. Coli was seen in acidic conditions with high amounts of ozone and increasing the duration of ozonation. According to the results, it was found that ozone in molecular form and by direct attack in acidic environments played a role in the destruction of pollutants. Design Expert software was used to determine the optimal conditions, minimize residual COD and maximize the efficiency of the ozonation process. The values of pH=5.2, ozone amount (131mg/min) and duration (23 min) are predicted to reach the lowest residual COD value (48 mg/L) and the highest efficiency (100% removal of E. Coli). According to the investigations carried out in this research, it can be concluded that the use of ozonation process to reduce COD and effectively remove E. Coli from the waste water of paper industry is a promising complementary method.

Since the last two decades, the use of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites has garnered significant application considerations over the synthetic fiber reinforced composites due to their numerous advantages and unique properties. Likewise, epoxy resin has attracted the interest of many researchers for composite synthesis, basically because of its chemical stability, thermal and mechanical characteristics. Hence, the primary aim of this study was to investigate the influence of dombeya fiber and paper particulate on the physical and mechanical properties of dombeya fiber and paper particulate-reinforced polymer composites for structural applications. Dombeya fiber and paper particles are renewable and biodegradable materials, thereby making them environmentally friendly materials to replace synthetic materials. Hand lay-up technique was utilized to fabricate the hybrid-reinforced biocomposites after which they were subjected to mechanical, wear, density, and moisture absorption properties. The surface morphology of the fractured surface was also analyzed to investigate its microstructural features. It was discovered from the results that hybrid biocomposites demonstrated improved properties over the unreinforced composite, with composites from 9-wt% dombeya fiber-paper particles reinforced biocomposite exhibiting the most suitable properties with commensurate density with the unreinforced epoxy matrix. These obtained characteristics support the material as a suitable material for biomedical apparatus application such as orthopedic implants, surgical instruments, and bone fixation devices.

This article provides answers to the question of how Generation Z perceives various quality characteristics in connection with paper straws. The aim of this study was to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of paper straws from three perspectives: intrinsic quality characteristics, sensory perception, and physical characteristics. A total of 215 young adults and 65 students aged up to 27 years took part in the field study and sensory analysis, respectively. The field survey revealed that Serbian Gen Z prefers and expects paper straws do not contribute to the flavor of the drink, have a rounded and dull edge, and not change their shape when dipped into the drink. The sensory panel was formed by selecting students based on the results of several sensory screening tests conducted in the initial phase. Sensory testing for the difference showed that the impact of paper straws of different diameters on flavor was limited, although it was confirmed that artificial saliva could easily coat the surfaces and penetrate the layers of the paper straws, resulting in a significant loss of firmness and a greater potential to adhere to the lips. No effects were found on the sweetness, sourness, pungency, and overall flavor of the soft drink. Viscosity was the only attribute that was affected. The soft drink was perceived as more viscous when using the narrower straw than when using the larger diameter straws. Artificial saliva and water were the liquids that had the greatest influence on the loss of firmness of the soaked straws. After 20 min of exposure to most of the liquids tested, the paper straws were found to lose over 75% of their firmness. Paper straws are more sustainable and have the potential to completely replace plastic straws. However, their physical properties, especially firmness, need to be further improved, considering that they can be soaked in liquids for more than 20 min when consuming various beverages.

The connection between surface tension and viscosity has been the subject of several pieces of research on nanofluids. Researchers have discovered differing relationships between these two suspension qualities in the literature. Surface tension and viscosity have been found to be correlated in certain research works but not in other. The behavior of these fluids may be influenced by several factors, including temperature, the presence of surfactants, and the functional groups on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This study investigates the relationship between surface tension and viscosity in CNT-Nanofluids by reviewing earlier research on the impact of CNT addition on water’s intermolecular interactions. The findings show that depending on different aspects of the nanofluids, the connection is complicated and uncertain. The study shows that although temperature and the addition of carbon nanotubes affect both surface tension and viscosity, other studies only consider how these factors affect one of these qualities. We conclude that under certain heat transfer circumstances, there is no clear-cut relationship between surface tension and viscosity in CNT–water fluids.

The sustainable use of natural resources is becoming an increasingly important issue today. Stone paper, produced as an alternative to cellulose-based paper from the forest, is rich in minerals and produced without cellulose and water. This study focuses on the behavior of screen-printing ink on two different papers, stone paper and coated sticker paper. Properties such as ink adhesion, rubbing resistance, optical printing ink density, ink consumption, and lightfastness were measured on these surfaces. Solvent- and UV-based inks were used, and printing was carried out on cellulose-based (coated sticker paper) and mineral-based (stone paper) paper layers using three different mesh counts (90, 120, and 140 tpc). The rubbing resistance and lightfastness of the papers were also measured. The present findings revealed that stone paper had the same printability properties as cellulose-based paper. The study concluded that using a 140 tpc mesh with both types of ink results in a high-lightfastness ink layer and lower ink consumption. UV-based inks exhibited high rub resistance across all mesh counts. Additionally, when printing with stone paper, there will be a reduction in ink consumption, thereby achieving cost savings. Based on the present findings, it was concluded that water- and oil-resistant stone paper can be considered an essential alternative in many fields, including the printing industry.

Sampah kertas merupakan sampah yang paling banyak dihasilkan dari aktivitas akademik di lingkungan kampus Universitas Andalas. Selama ini sampah kertas dibiarkan menumpuk dan kemudian dijual oleh petugas kebersihan kepada pengepul sampah atau dibakar. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah dapat meningkatkan sumber daya dan potensi perempuan melalui teknologi Qulling Paper dengan peluang usaha yang menjanjikan terutama bagi para petugas kebersihan. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan mulai dari bulan Juli sampai September 2022 dengan sasaran peserta adalah para petugas kebersihan yang berhubungan langsung dengan sampah kertas. Metode yang digunakan adalah penyuluhan tentang bahaya sampah kertas terhadap lingkungan dan kesehatan, yang di akhiri dengan diskusi dan wawancara untuk mengetahui tingkat pengetahuan petugas kebersihan tentang pengelolaan dan pengolahan sampah kertas. Kegiatan dilanjutkan dengan pelatihan pengolahan sampah kertas melalui teknologi paper quilling dengan mempraktekkan secara langsung sampai peserta dapat menghasilkan suatu produk kerajinan. Kegiatan pendampingan terhadap peserta juga dilakukan dengan membimbing peserta sampai terampil menghasilkan produk kerajinan yang layak jual. Pada kegiatan pelatihan ini semua peserta kegiatan dapat menghasilkan produk kerajinan yang bernilai jual tinggi, dan ekonomis. Pelatihan pengolahan sampah kertas kepada petugas kebersihan merupakan salah satu solusi paling tepat dalam mengurangi jumlah sampah kertas di kampus Universitas Andalas dan sekaligus dapat meningkatkan ketrampilan. Diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan serta mengurangi jumlah sampah kertas di lingkungan kampus Universitas Andalas.

This study investigates the physical, mechanical, and structural characteristics of handmade paper samples derived from cellulose extracted from grass clippings using two distinct methods as follows: (1) alkali treatment and (2) alkali treatment followed by bleaching, coupled with the incorporation of barium sulfate as a mineral filler. Our investigation revealed that the handmade paper samples’ densities, moisture contents, and thicknesses varied within the ranges of 0.436 to 0.549 g/cm3, 5.60 to 2.51%, and 0.41 to 0.50 mm, respectively. The tensile strength and folding endurance of the papers produced through alkali treatment with barium sulfate were notably superior to those produced from bleached pulp and barium sulfate. Our analysis indicates that several critical factors, including paper density, thickness, the crystallinity index, and the microfibrillar structure of cellulose, intricately influence the mechanical and strength properties of the samples. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, we identified characteristic cellulose bonds and examined cellulose’s crystalline and amorphous phases. Additionally, the crystallinity index of the samples was determined using both the Segal and peak deconvolution methods. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs revealed interconnected networks of cellulose fibers with varying thicknesses and lengths, along with incorporated mineral filler within the cellulose fiber structure. Variations in mineral particle retention were attributed to the presence or absence of cellulose microfibrils. These findings contribute to our understanding of the observed strength characteristics of the paper samples and underscore the potential applications of cellulose derived from grass clippings, especially when combined with barium sulfate as a mineral filler in paper production.

This paper addresses the challenges of data sparsity and personalization limitations inherent in current recommendation systems when processing extensive academic paper datasets. To overcome these issues, the present work introduces an innovative recommendation model that integrates the wealth of structured information from knowledge graphs and refines the amalgamation of temporal and relational data. By applying attention mechanisms and neural network technologies, the model thoroughly explores the text characteristics of papers and the evolving patterns of user behaviors. Additionally, the model elevates the accuracy and personalization of recommendations by meticulously examining citation patterns among papers and the networks of author collaboration. The experimental findings show that the present model surpasses baseline models on all evaluation metrics, thereby enhancing the precision and personalization of academic paper recommendations.

Environmental pollution is a significant problem and is increasing gradually as more and more harmful pollutants are being released into water bodies and the environment. Water pollutants are dangerous and pose a threat to all living organisms and the ecosystem. Paper waste is one of the most widespread and largest wastes in the world. This research aims to address two important problems simultaneously: the reduction in solid waste in the environment using activated carbon from paper waste as potential adsorbents and the removal of harmful contaminants from water. Carbon from paper waste was activated with H2O2, HNO3, and KMnO4 for the adsorption of Cr(VI) and MB. SEM, EDX, FTIR, Raman, and BET were used to determine the properties of the materials. The surface morphology of the materials consisted of amorphous particles. EDX shows that all activated samples have a higher content of (O) than carbon paper waste. Adsorption studies showed that there was a stronger interaction between the pollutants and the adsorbent at a higher initial concentration (200 mg/L) than at the lower initial concentrations. The contact time data show that uptake increases when the interaction time between the contaminant and the adsorbent is increased. The tests for the pH of the solution show that the adsorption of Cr(VI) decreases when the pH is gradually increased, whereas the adsorption of MB increases when the pH of the solution is increased. The results fit better with the Freundlich isotherm and PSO models. The temperature studies show that the enthalpy was positive, indicating that the uptake process is endothermic. The Gibbs free energy values were all negative, indicating that adsorption between the adsorbents and the pollutants was favored. After four consecutive cycles, all the samples retained more than 60% of their uptake capability.

In this paper, the aging characterization of a kind of insulating paper modified by magnetron sputtering MgO particles based on a microstrip resonant sensor was presented. Firstly, the modified insulating paper with 0, 15 and 30 min MgO particle sputtering times was prepared by a magnetron sputtering device. After that, the properties of the modified insulating paper with different sputtering times were analyzed through microscopic characterization, infrared spectrum, polymerization degree, dielectric constant, AC breakdown strength and thermal aging experiments. The results show that the dielectric constant of the modified insulating paper decreased obviously, the AC breakdown strength increased and the thermal aging resistance was better after 15 min of sputtering. The overall performance of the modified insulating paper after 30 min of sputtering is reduced due to excessive sputtering. In addition, microstrip resonant sensors are introduced to characterize the thermal aging degree of the modified insulating paper, and two microstrip resonant sensors are prepared: a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) and an interdigital-capacitor-shaped defected ground structure resonator (IDCS-DGS). The resonance frequency deviation of the modified insulating paper samples after aging was measured by microstrip resonance sensors to show the influence of aging temperature on aging degree. The experimental results show that the test results of the microstrip resonance sensors are in good agreement with the traditional characterization methods and can characterize the various aging stages of the modified insulating paper to a certain extent, which proves the feasibility of the characterization method.

Highlights m-BN/PNF nanocomposite paper with nacre-mimetic layered structures prepared via sol–gel film transformation approach presents excellent thermal conductivity, incredible electrical insulation, outstanding mechanical property and thermal stability. When the mass fraction of m-BN is 50 wt%, m-BN/PNF nanocomposite paper exhibits excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation. The λ ∥ and λ ⊥ are 9.68 and 0.84 W m−1 K−1, and the volume resistivity and breakdown strength are as high as 2.3 × 1015 Ω cm and 324.2 kV mm−1, respectively. The m-BN/PNF nanocomposite paper with 50 wt% m-BN also presents outstanding mechanical properties (tensile strength of 193.6 MPa) and thermal stability (thermal decomposition temperature of 640 °C).

Abstract Paper, an inexpensive material with natural biocompatibility, non‐toxicity, and biodegradability, allows for affordable and cost‐effective substrates for unconventional advanced electronics, often called papertronics. On the other hand, polymeric elastomers have shown to be an excellent success for substrates of soft bioelectronics, providing stretchability in skin wearable technology for continuous sensing applications. Although both materials hold their unique advantageous characteristics, merging both material properties into a single electronic substrate reimagines paper‐based bioelectronics for wearable and patchable applications in biosensing, energy generation and storage, soft actuators, and more. Here, a breathable, light‐weighted, biocompatible engineered stretchable paper is reported via coaxial nonwoven microfibers for unconventional bioelectronic substrates. The stretchable papers allow intimate bioconformability without adhesive through coaxial electrospinning of a cellulose acetate polymer (sheath) and a silicone elastomer (core). The fabricated cellulose‐silicone fibers exhibit a greater percent strain than commercially available paper while retaining hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, combustibility, disposable, and other natural characteristics of paper. Moreover, the nonwoven stretchable cellulose‐silicone fibrous mat can adapt conventional printing and fabrication process for paper‐based electronics, an essential aspect of advanced bioelectronic manufacturing.

Power transformers are critical equipment responsible for the transmission and transformation of electrical energy, and they are an important component of power system. Under the combined effects of electric field, thermal field, and mechanical stress, insulation degradation is prone to occur in oil-paper insulation structures. Among them, the “liquid-solid” interface formed by oil and oil-immersed pressboard is the weak point in transformer insulation, and extensive operational experience has shown that creeping flashover of insulating pressboard is a common fault in power transformers. Creeping flashover of insulating pressboard can rapidly destroy the insulation structure, leading to irreversible damage to the transformer and posing a serious risk of transformer accidents. In recent years, many scholars have conducted in-depth research on the characteristics and mechanisms of creeping flashover in oil-paper insulation structures using various experimental methods. They have obtained significant findings that have important theoretical and practical implications for optimizing the structure of power transformers and improving their reliability. This paper first introduces the characteristics of the electromagnetic environment inside the power transformer and the common forms of creeping flashover accidents in engineering. Then, classified according to the uneven degree of electric field and creepage distance of test electrodes used in relevant research, and the test methods and flashover characteristics of small size (

This study reviews the mass transfer with a focus on the challenges, benefits, processing and prospects in the pulp and paper industry with a scope limited to Kraft pulping which is the dominant pulping process worldwide. The mass transfer usually occurs in various processes that deal with reactions, separation, and heat transfer. All these aforementioned processes occur in the production of pulp and paper from their raw materials. The application of mass transfer to these processes is of great importance in setting target yields, and specifications and improving efficiency. The major processes where mass transfer principles are applied are drying, chemical washing, pulp digestion and pulp bleaching respectively. Understanding the requirements and targets of each of these processes in combination with the mass transfer principles helps in the development of models and design of equipment that operate based on the developed models in meeting the required targets. Studies have indicated that mass and energy balances cannot be done independently in meeting the required targets and equipment design. The drying and stripping of lignocellulosic components of the feed-in paper manufacture constitute a large part of the challenges faced by the industry. Drying techniques have been considered to be inefficient, and lignocellulosic by-products are known to contain toxic components. Green chemistry production processes and newer drying techniques were indicated as possible solutions. It is expected that researchers and investors would find this article useful.

The effect of calcium carbonate nanoparticles (CaCO3) on the mechanical and thermal properties of various polymers was investigated in this review. The results were compared to scholarly research published between 2002-2022. Different polymers were evaluated, including Polypropylene (PP), High-density polyethylene (HDPE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), Polyethylene (PE), and natural rubber (NR). Through this work, the effect of CaCO3 nanoparticles that act as fillers in polymeric materials has been reviewed. It can be concluded that mechanical and thermal properties can be decreased, increased, or unchanged by increasing and decreasing the fillers to obtain optimal results. It is reasonable to conclude that most papers with nano-CaCO3 showed improvements in appreciable mechanical and thermal properties. In general, the term "surface modification of inorganic fillers" refers to the coating of the fillers with organic materials, which can be done by physical and chemical interactions between the modifiers and the fillers. The reviewed articles revealed that modification of CaCO3 nanoparticles with surface pre-treatment fillers caused enhancement of the mechanical properties of the polymeric matrix twice and prevented the agglomeration of particles in the matrix. Various mixing methods have been used, the most significant being a twin screw extruder, mechanical stirrer, and two-roll mill.

Honeycomb plates, due to their multi-cavity structure, exhibit excellent mechanical properties and sound insulation. Previous studies have demonstrated that altering the cell size and arrangement of honeycomb structures impacts their acoustic performance. Based on these findings, this study developed a wallboard structure with enhanced sound insulation by filling the cavities with paper fiber/cement facesheets and designing a stacked core structure. Through the reverberation chamber–anechoic chamber sound insulation experiment under 100–6300 Hz excitation and conducting orthogonal experiments from three dimensions, it was found that: (1) Compared to no filling, the filling with straw and glazed hollow bead can increase the sound transmission loss (STL) by more than 50% in the frequency bandwidth above 2000 Hz. This indicates that both types of fillings can significantly enhance the sound insulation performance of the honeycomb structure without a significant increase in economic costs. (2) The increase in paper fiber/cement facesheets improves the STL across the entire experimental bandwidth, with a maximum improvement exceeding 70%. This structural design not only offers superior sound insulation performance but also better suits practical engineering applications. (3) Increasing the number of core stacking units (from one to three), taking straw-filled paper honeycomb-core wallboards as an example, effectively increased the STL bandwidth. (4) This test enriches the application of honeycomb plates in sound insulation. Introducing fiber paper fiber/cement facesheets and eco-friendly, low-cost straw improves sound insulation and enhances the strength of honeycomb, making them more suitable for construction, particularly as non-load-bearing structures.

We assessed 19,000 scientific introductions to measure the level of undisclosed use of ChatGPT in scientific papers published in 2023 and early 2024. We applied a “stylistics” approach that has previously been shown to be effective at differentiating AI-generated text from human-written text in a variety of venues. Ten different MDPI journals were selected for this study, and the rate of use of undisclosed AI writing in these journals was fairly consistent across the journals. We estimate that ChatGPT was used for writing or significant editing in about 1 to 3% of the introductions tested. This analysis is the first systematic study of detecting undisclosed ChatGPT in published manuscripts in cases where obvious indicators, such as phrases like “regenerate response”, are not present. The work demonstrates that generative AI is not polluting mainstream journals to any appreciable extent and that the overwhelming majority of scientists remain hesitant to embrace this tool for late-stage writing and editing.

The advance in the development of augmented reality technologies has attracted interest in their applicability in rescue scenarios. The characteristics of the different missions covered by First Responders, as well as the different objectives they can cover in a rescue operation, condition the importance of the additional information they can receive in these rescue processes through technology. This white paper aims to analyze the difficulties encountered when converging on the design of an interface that is adaptable to the professional and contextual circumstances in a rescue task.

The use of non-wood fibres for paper production could be one of the most environmentally friendly and economical alternatives. Reducing the consumption of wood pulp in paper and cardboard production by replacing wood pulp with alternative plant biomass could be a viable solution, as the amount of non-wood fibres in biomass is far from being exhausted. In this study, straw from the most commonly grown agricultural crops in Croatia was used as a source of non-wood fibres. Agricultural residues from wheat, barley and triticale were selected as a substitute for wood fibres for the production of laboratory papers with straw fibres. Under laboratory conditions, straw pulp was mixed with recycled wood pulp in a ratio of 30:70 to produce paper sheets that can be printed with different printing techniques. Regardless of the printing technique used, it is desirable that the prints contain a high-quality reproduction of the image and text on the surface of the paper and that the ink does not penetrate completely through the substrate. In this context, this study observed the use of laboratory-made papers with non-wood fibres as the printing substrate by analysing the maximum depth of ink penetration into the printing substrate obtained with two printing techniques - a modern one (digital UV inkjet) and a very high quality conventional one (gravure). It was found that the gravure printing favoured a greater penetration of the UV ink into the substrate with the addition of straw pulp compared to the digital printing technique. However, this is a consequence of the printing technique, as similar ink penetration was also observed on the laboratory substrate made only from recycled fibres. Compared to commercial papers, the ink penetration is slightly higher into the laboratory made printing substrates. It is interesting to note that the printing substrate with the addition of 30% triticale pulp has the lowest ink penetration, especially in multicolour prints produced with the digital UV inkjet printing technique.

Multifunctional and flexible wearable devices play a crucial role in a wide range of applications, such as heath monitoring, intelligent skins, and human-machine interactions. Developing flexible and conductive materials for multifunctional wearable devices with low-cost and high efficiency methods are highly desirable. Here, a conductive graphene/microsphere/bamboo fiber (GMB) nanocomposite paper with hierarchical surface microstructures is successfully fabricated through a simple vacuum-assisted filtration followed by thermo-foaming process. The as-prepared microstructured GMB nanocomposite paper exhibits not only a high volume electrical conductivity of ∼45 ​S/m but also an excellent electrical stability (i.e., relative changes in resistance are less than 3% under stretching, folding, and compressing loadings) due to its unique structure features. With this microstructured nanocomposite paper as active sensing layer, microstructured pressure sensors with a high sensitivity (−4 ​kPa−1), a wide sensing range (0–5 ​kPa), and a rapid response time (about 140 ​ms) are realized. In addition, benefitting from the outstanding electrical stability and mechanical flexibility, the microstructured nanocomposite paper is further demonstrated as a low-voltage Joule heating device. The surface temperature of the microstructured nanocomposite paper rapidly reaches over 80 ​°C when applying a relatively low voltage of 7 ​V, indicating its potential in human thermotherapy and thermal management.

The selective detection of halides in aqueous samples is crucial for addressing environmental and physiological concerns. Consequently, the development of an affordable, portable, and user-friendly sensing platform for rapid halide detection holds substantial promise. In this study, we present a novel paper-based nanosensor as an appealing alternative for selectively detecting halides in water. This nanosensor leverages the optical properties of silver nanoparticles (ranging from 50 to 250 nm) embedded in epoxy resin and printed on filter paper. We elucidate the colorimetric behavior of this nanosensor in response to specific halides (chloride, bromide, and iodide) upon contact. Importantly, this sensor discerns, through a single measurement, the presence of these halides in aqueous media with remarkable selectivity. The nanosensor manifests distinct color changes in reaction to different halides, particularly at elevated concentrations (ranging from 2 to 400 mM), surpassing the saturation levels observed in other proposed sensors. These discernible color changes are due to the oxidation of silver nanoparticles, changing their morphology and aggregation density, and can be readily detected and analyzed directly from a captured image. Consequently, it demonstrates considerable potential for integration into automated qualitative monitoring devices based on chromaticity analysis.
