This article substantiates the possibilities of replacing commercial wood with raw materials made from industrial hemp hurd (hemp-woody core) for the production of unbleached and bleached paper pulps. A comparative analysis of the mechanical characteristics of sheets of paper prepared in the Rapid-Köthen apparatus and obtained from pulp obtained from commercial wood and hemp-woody core (HWC) was undertaken. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of mechanical refining of a pulp on the production of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) from HWC. It was shown that an increase in the pulp refining degree from 15 °SR to 83 °SR led to a decrease in the degree of polymerisation of MCC from 272 to 75, the hydrochloric acid concentration from 73 to 45.63 g/L, and the hydrolysis time from 120 min to 60 min. With the addition of 5% MCC obtained from hemp-woody core, the mechanical properties of laboratory paper sheets from HWC were improved until they met ISO 12625-4-2017 (2017) requirements for NS-2. The results obtained support using hemp-woody core for the production of MCC.

Carbon microsphere was successfully synthesized from waste office paper via hydrothermal method and high temperature treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. The process of carbon microsphere synthesis from waste office paper fiber using concentrated sulfuric acid was studied, and the influence of H2SO4 concentration and reaction time on the hydrolysis reaction was considered. To investigate the mechanism of conversion of waste office paper to carbon microsphere, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry was used to analyze the chemical composition of the supernatant liquid product and the non-carbonized carbon microsphere. The weight loss of the non-carbonized carbon microsphere was assessed through thermogravimetry. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphology. The hydrolysis reaction of waste office paper fiber and synthesis mechanism of carbon microsphere under different conditions were evaluated. The results showed that when the reaction time reached 24 h, the product had uniform particle size and was well dispersed, and the more sulfuric acid present led to the waste office paper fiber being more thoroughly hydrolyzed.

Waste papers, which are a major constituent of municipal wastes, can be repurposed into the production of bioethanol, a renewable and ecofriendly fuel. Many studies have produced ethanol from print-grade papers, but literature on conversion of waste cartons is sparce. In this study, waste corrugated cartons and print-grade papers were reduced into slurries and were subjected to physical and chemical tests to determine their suitability for biosynthesis. Cellulose fibers in the slurries were directly hydrolyzed into glucose without prior pretreatment by dilute hydrochloric acid, and fermented into ethanol using Saccaromyces cerevisae. Density, flammability, color, odor, non-volatile residue and other qualitative tests were conducted on the ethanol produced. Glucose yield and the extraction efficiency in cellulose hydrolysis were significantly higher for waste cartons than print paper slurries. Qualitative tests reveal that the ethanol produced from both slurries has physical and chemical characteristics that are comparable to laboratory grade ethanol, contains no toxic impurities, and is suitable for use as a biofuel.

Pollution generated by solid waste has become a massive source of concern worldwide as the amount of waste being generated has become overwhelming. Waste paper contributes significantly to the overall solid municipal waste being generated daily and with control methods that are equally bad for the environment or just plain ineffective; better, effective, and environmentally friendly control solutions are required. This study reviews the use of various microorganisms as they aid in the control of waste papers in an environmentally conscious way. In addition to being an environmentally friendly solution to the issue of solid waste paper pollution, it is also a prominent source of renewable energy in the conversion of paper into fermentable sugars for the production of bio-ethanol. This review examines the vital revolution in the enzymatic hydrolysis of paper to sugar. Salient challenges that involve bioconversion were highlighted and a few solutions were suggested.

This article adds more information to the problem of natural ester use as an electroinsulating fluid in cellulose paper-oil systems, e.g., for use in power transformers. An accelerated thermal aging (120, 140 and 160 °C) of samples consisting of cellulose paper (transformerboard), a treated natural ester (filtered, basic Al2O3, 0.53% DBPC), a copper plate and moisture was studied. Research was especially focused on the impact of moisture on the aging of the above system. Samples with three different oil moisture levels (80, 143 and 305 ppm water content) were subjected to thermal aging to display the change in a selection of properties (tanδ, acid number, water content). For a study of the polarization effects, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was performed to observe the complex permittivity and conductivity dependencies on the temperature and frequency (±30 °C, 0.01-107 Hz). Havriliak-Negami (H-N) diagrams were used to further understand the results. The degradation products during thermal aging were recognized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Hydrolysis and hydrogenation occurred in the insulating system with a natural ester aged by elevated temperatures, which is in contrast to CO2 formation in the case of electric aging. The results showed an increase in the acid number, dissipation factor, and number of hydrolysis and hydrogenation products. Furthermore, changes in polarization were observed as a consequence of the thermal aging of paper-natural ester insulation system with the presence of copper and moisture.

Paper mill effluent (PME) was used as an organic feedstock for production of biohydrogen via dark fermentation using heat-shock pretreated anaerobic sludge under mesophilic conditions. The influence of substrate concentration (5, 10 and 15 g-COD/L) and the initial pH (5 and 7) on the efficiency of dark hydrogen fermentation from PME were investigated. The highest hydrogen yield of 55.4 mL/g-COD was obtained at substrate concentration and pH of 5 g-COD/L and 5, respectively. By increasing the concentration of substrate from 5 to 10 and 15 g-COD/L, at fixed initial pH, the hydrogen production efficiency was reduced from 55.4 mL/g-COD to 38.5 and 32.7 mL/g-COD. Furthermore, by increasing pH from 5 to 7, biohydrogen efficiency was reduced up to 40.8%. Different hydrolysis of PME including acidic, acidic-thermal and alkaline hydrolysis prior to fermentation were studied which the alkaline hydrolysis led to the highest hydrogen yield of 62.2 mL/g-COD. Moreover, methane production efficiency of 569 mL/g-COD was obtained at substrate concentration and pH of 5 g-COD/L and 7, respectively. Paper mill sludge (PMS) solids are predominantly comprised of cellulosic fibers and fillers rejected during the pulping or paper making process. Most sludges are dewatered and discharged into landfills or land spread at a cost to the mill; creating large economic and environmental burdens. This lignocellulosic residual stream can be used as a source of sugars for microbial fermentation to renewable chemicals. The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of converting mill sludge to sugars and then fermentation to either isoprene or ethanol. Chemical analysis indicated that the cellulosic fiber composition between 28 to 68% and hemicellulose content ranged from 8.4 to 10.7%. Calcium carbonate concentration in the sludge ranged from 0.4 to 34%. Sludge samples were enzyme hydrolyzed to convert cellulose fibers to glucose, percent conversion ranged from 10.5 to 98%. Calcium carbonate present with the sludge resulted in low hydrolysis rates; washing of sludge with hydrochloric acid to neutralize the calcium carbonate, increased hydrolysis rates by 50 to 88%. The production of isoprene “very low” (190 to 470 nmol) because the isoprene yields were little. Using an industrial yeast strain for fermentation of the sludge sugars obtained from all sludge samples, the maximum conversion efficiency was achieved with productivity ranging from 0.18 to 1.64 g L−1 h−1. Our data demonstrates that PMS can be converted into sugars that can be fermented to renewable chemicals for industry.

Abstract For over two decades the exposure of paper heritage collections to outdoor and indoor generated gaseous pollutants has been perceived as an important threat to their preservation. Following explicit or implicit advise from conservation science, many archives, libraries and museums have implemented special chemical filtration units to prevent possible pollution induced damage. The most abundant, potentially harmful, indoor generated pollutant found in paper loaded storage rooms is acetic acid. Acids are known to promote the chemical degradation of cellulose, the major constituent of paper. These combined facts make clear why acetic acid has received much attention by conservation science as a prime suspect pollutant causing paper degradation. However, new experimental evidence contradicts the claim that acetic acid in typical storage situations causes significant damage to paper heritage. In this study a mathematical model is presented that expresses our understanding of the causal chain of processes connecting acetic acid exposure to paper damage. The model simply combines existing partial models describing (1) the transfer of acetic acid through air, (2) the pH response of paper and (3) the kinetics of acid-catalyzed hydrolytic depolymerization. The model makes apparent that the impact of acetic acid on archival and library collections is rather limited and poses an insignificant risk and as such requires a re-evaluation of existing data.

Enzymatic hydrolysis to produce nanocellulose in an integrated forest biorefinery strategy. A review. Introduction. In a world that seeks to break free from petrochemicals, the concept of forest biomass biorefinery is increasingly being studied as a way to maximize the value of the components of this biomass. Due to the high added value expected when transforming cellulose fibers into nanocellulose, this technology is highly attractive to the pulp and paper industrial world. Literature. The concept of integrated forest biorefinery is to adapt existing pulp mills so as to maximize the value of the co-products. Through the use of various methods, two types of nanocellulose may be obtained from the cellulose in the pulp. Due to its production of valuable byproducts, enzymatic hydrolysis is an interesting method to use for this purpose, but it must be combined with mechanical post-treatments. The production of nanocellulose from chemical pulp takes place in the final step of pulp production, and could be implemented without modifying the existing mills. The economic viability of this mode of production and the potential market size are the subject of recent studies that appear encouraging. Conclusions. Nanocellulose is a promising biomaterial whose field of application continues to grow. Cellulose in wood pulp can be used as a raw material for the production of nanocellulose using enzymatic pre-treatments that generate valuable co-products. This process can be integrated into a conventional chemical pulp mill and constitutes a broadening of the products available to the pulp and paper industry.

Hydrothermal hydrolysis in hot pressurized liquid water (HPLW) is attractive for biomass conversion into valuable products because it achieves high reaction rates without catalysts and additives. The hydrothermal hydrolysis of high crystalline cellulose requires higher reaction temperature than polysaccharides having low crystallinity. It can be expected to increase the reaction rate or decrease temperature by decreasing the crystallinity. In the present study ashless filter paper as a fibrous pure cellulose sample was pretreated with ionic liquids (ILs) such as imidazolium chloride ILs containing alkyl side chains ranging from two to six carbons, and with an aqueous solution of bis(ethylenediamine ammonium) copper (BEDC). Herein, the pretreatment with ILs was to regenerate filter paper: dissolving in ILs at 373 K for 120 min or in an aqueous BEDC solution at room temperature, precipitating by adding water, washing the solid, and then drying. Subsequently, the pretreated filter paper samples were hydrolyzed at 533 K and 5.0 MPa in HPLW in a small semi-batch reactor, and the effects of the pretreatment with ILs or BEDC on reaction rates and product yields were examined. While the crystallinity indexes with all ILs and BEDC after the pretreatments decreased to 44 to 47 from the original sample of 87, the reaction rates and product yields were significantly affected by the IL species. At 533 K and 5.0 MPa, the dissolution rate with [AMIM][Cl] was nine times as fast as that for untreated sample.

The electrochemical reduction method is an effective approach for the harmless treatment of toxic components in aluminum alloy dross (AAD) and the high-value utilization of valuable elements. By combining theoretical calculations and experiments, this paper reveals the migration behavior and transformation laws of toxic and valuable elements in AAD during hydrolysis, calcination, and electrolysis. The removal rates of N and Cl in hydrolysis were 88.01 % and 93.84 %, respectively. During calcination, Al(OH)3 was transformed into γ-Al2O3, and part of the aluminum alloy phase and Si monomers were oxidized into oxides. During electrolysis, all positive elements (such as Fe, Si, Cu, and Zn, which are more electronegative than aluminum) were incorporated into the aluminum alloy. A very small portion of Mg and Ca entered the aluminum alloy, but most of the Mg and Ca were respectively transformed into MgF2 and CaF2, gradually accumulating in the electrolyte. The toxic components N and Cl were converted into useful by-products throughout the entire process. Moreover, other valuable components entered the aluminum alloy, no other pollutants were generated, and the overall recovery rate was more than 95 %. The results of this study provide theoretical support for developing similar electrochemical disposal techniques for solid waste.

Sewage sludge (SS) is a potential source of bioenergy, yet its management is a global concern. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is applied to effectively valorize SS by reclaiming energy in the form of methane. However, the complex floc structure of SS hinders hydrolysis during AD process, thus resulting in lower process efficiency. To overcome the rate-limiting hydrolysis, various pre-treatment methods have been developed to enhance AD efficiency. This review aims to provide insights into recent advancements in pre-treatment technologies, including mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological methods. Each technology was critically evaluated and compared, and its relative worth was summarized based on full-scale applicability, along with economic benefits, AD performance improvements, and impact on digested sludge. The paper illuminates the readers about existing research gaps, and the future research needed for successful implementation of these approaches at full scale. Municipal biowastes are conventionally treated by assessed anaerobic and aerobic fermentation to produce biogas, anaerobic digestate, and compost. Low-temperature hydrolysis and the oxidation of the digestate and compost, which are still at the experimental stage, are known to yield water-soluble value-added chemical specialities for use in different sectors of the chemical industry and in agriculture. The present paper reports the application of the two chemical reactions to the biowastes before fermentation. The products obtained in this manner are compared with those obtained from the chemical reactions applied to the fermented biowastes. Based on the experimental results, the paper discusses the expected environmental and economic benefits of the above chemical processes and products in comparison with the products obtained by other known biotechnologies for the valorisation of biomass as a feedstock for the biobased chemical industry. The results point out that a sustainable biowaste-based refinery that produces biofuel and biobased chemicals may be developed by integrating chemical and fermentation technologies.

Antibiotic resistance of bacteria is very big problem in clinical and veterinary medicine in recent year. This problem is increasing by the exposure of bacteria against antibiotics. The most spread of resistance is resistance against penicillins antibiotics. Ampicillin is common use antibiotic in the both medicine. Therefore, detection of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance are very important for prevention of spread of antibiotics in the environment and resistant bacteria too. Therefore the aim of this study was detection of ampicillin, its sodium salts and alkaline hydrolysis products by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry. For detection of pure ampicillin, its sodium salts and alkaline hydrolysed products MALDI-TOF MS (Matrix Assisted Light Desorption Ionization – Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry) Microflex LT in positive ion mode was used. Determined mass spectra were observed by FlexAnalysis software. The mass spectra and molecular weight of ampicillin, its sodium salts and hydrolysed products were compared with theoretical molecular weight of these compounds. The results showed that it is possible to detect ampicillin, its sodium salts and hydrolyzed products by MALDI-TOF MS in positive ion mode with some correction in analytical software. This knowledge is resulting that MALDI-TOF MS detection method can be useful for detection of ampicillin from different kind of environment samples and it is possible to detect ampicillin resistance mechanism (enzymatic destruction) indirectly, because resistance against penicillins is enzymatic hydrolysis of beta-lactam core. Also the most important issue is that method is very quickly and cheap.

This paper investigates bioethanol production from switchgrass, focusing on enhancement of efficiency through various pretreatment methods and comparing two bioethanol production processes: simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF). Physical, chemical, and biological pretreatment processes are applied to enhance the breakdown of switchgrass’s lignocellulosic structure. Effects of pretreatments, enzymatic hydrolysis, and fermentation on ethanol yield are discussed in detail. The comparative analysis reveals that SSF yields higher ethanol outputs within shorter times by integrating hydrolysis and fermentation into a single process. In contrast, SHF offers more control by separating these stages. The comparative analysis highlights that SSF achieves higher ethanol yields more efficiently, although it might restrict SHF’s operational flexibility. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current pretreatments, hydrolysis methods, and fermentation processes in bioethanol production from switchgrass, offering insights into their scalability, economic viability, and potential environmental benefits. The findings are expected to contribute to the ongoing discussions and developments in renewable bioenergy solutions, supporting advancing more sustainable and efficient bioethanol production techniques.

Textile products comprise approximately 10% of the total global carbon footprint. Standard practice is to discard apparel textile waste after use, which pollutes the environment. There are professional collectors, charity organizations, and municipalities that collect used apparel and either resell or donate them. Non-reusable apparel is partially recycled, mainly through incineration or processed as solid waste during landfilling. More than 60 million tons of textiles are burnt or disposed of in landfills annually. The main aim of this paper is to model the heterogeneous kinetics of hydrolysis of multicomponent textile waste containing polyester (polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers), by using water without special catalytic agents or hazardous and costly chemicals. This study aims to contribute to the use of closed-loop technology in this field, which will reduce the associated negative environmental impact. The polyester part of waste is depolymerized into primary materials, namely monomers and intermediates. Reaction kinetic models are developed for two mechanisms: (i) the surface reaction rate controlling the hydrolysis and (ii) the penetrant in terms of the solid phase rate controlling the hydrolysis. A suitable kinetic model for mono- and multicomponent fibrous blends hydrolyzed in neutral and acidic conditions is chosen by using a regression approach. This approach can also be useful for the separation of cotton/polyester or wool/polyester blends in textile waste using the acid hydrolysis reaction, as well as the application of high pressure and the neutral hydrolysis of polyester to recover primary monomeric constituents.

The destruction of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is a crucial area of research due to the ongoing evolution of toxic chemicals. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous crystalline solids, have emerged as promising materials for this purpose. Their remarkable porosity and large surface areas enable superior adsorption, reactivity, and catalytic abilities, making them ideal for capturing and decomposing target species. Moreover, the tunable networks of MOFs allow customization of their chemical functionalities, making them practicable in personal protective equipment and adjustable to dynamic environments. This review paper focuses on experimental and computational studies investigating the removal of CWAs by MOFs, specifically emphasizing the removal of nerve agents (GB, GD, and VX) via hydrolysis and sulfur mustard (HD) via selective photooxidation. Among the different MOFs, zirconium-based MOFs exhibit extraordinary structural stability and reusability, rendering them the most promising materials for the hydrolytic and photooxidative degradation of CWAs. Accordingly, this work primarily concentrates on exploring the intrinsic catalytic reaction mechanisms in Zr-MOFs through first-principles approximations, as well as the design of efficient degradation strategies in the aqueous and solid phases through the establishment of Zr-MOF structure–property relationships. Recent progress in the tuning and functionalization of MOFs is also examined, aiming to enhance practical CWA removal under realistic battlefield conditions. By providing a comprehensive overview of experimental findings and computational insights, this review paper contributes to the advancement of MOF-based strategies for the destruction of CWAs and highlights the potential of these materials to address the challenges associated with chemical warfare.

The relevance of studying the biopotential of shrimp waste and their hydrolysates is due to the need for complex processing of secondary raw materials of aquatic organisms to obtain useful products. At the fish processing plant Vichyunai-Rus LLC when manufacturing food products from white-legged shrimp, up to 60 % of the mass of waste (cephalothorax, shell) remains. This raw material contains valuable organic components, but is not processed. The paper proposes its complex processing with the production of hydrolysates in two ways – high-temperature and enzymatic. During thermohydrolysis in the aquatic environment, three fractions are formed from shrimp waste (fatty, water-soluble and water-insoluble). After separation, the water-soluble fraction was sublimated, and the water-insoluble fraction was dried by convection. The fat fraction was further purified by washing in warm water. The general chemical composition of shrimp waste and hydrolysis products has been studied. It has been shown that water-soluble hydrolysates are a good source of protein components (66.6–71.6 %). In comparative studies of the amino acid composition of water-soluble hydrolysates, the presence of all essential amino acids is established with minor differences between the samples. Both hydrolysates are dominated by alanine, arginine, glycine, isoleucine, lysine, aspartic acid, tyrosine, valine (3.3–6.4 g/100 g of protein). In terms of formol-titratable nitrogen in fermentolisates, alkalase ferments shrimp waste more actively than collagenase. The fatty acid composition of lipids isolated by thermohydrolysis from shrimp waste has been analyzed. Shrimp oil is characterized by a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (44.7 %) with a relatively low content of omega-3 family acids (10.7 %) and a high content of omega-6 (33.9 %) at a ratio of 1 : 3.2 (close to the physiologically recommended). The organoleptic characteristics of water-soluble and water-insoluble shrimp hydrolysates have been studied. Due to the content of valuable biologically active components in hydrolyzates, their use as food and feed additives – sources of active peptides, high-molecular proteins, minerals and chitinous components – is recommended.

This paper presents the results of obtaining a composite film based on polyimide track membranes filled with a silica filler, although the issue of the deposition of this filler in the pores of the given membranes remained unexplored. The filler was obtained by hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane using an alkaline and acid catalyst. This paper presents the results of the effect of the tetraethoxysilane hydrolysis reaction catalyst on the precipitation of hydrolysis products in the pores of the polyimide track membrane. The factors influencing the formation of silicon oxide nanofibers within the matrix template (polyimide track membrane) are determined. It was found that the use of an acid catalyst provides the highest rates of filling, while when using an alkaline catalyst, the filling is practically not observed, and only single pores are filled. The properties of the composite film obtained were investigated. SEM images of the surface and chip of the composite while using alkaline and acid catalyst are presented. The spatial structure of composite films based on track membranes was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. The hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in an acid medium significantly decreases the optical density index of the membranes and simultaneously increases their light transmission index. The greatest changes are observed in the range of 500–1000 nm, and there are no detectable changes in the range of 340–500 nm. When using an alkaline catalyst, there is not the same significant decrease in the relative optical density index D.

This paper presents the effect of microwave and ultrasound irradiation on the enzymatic hydrolysis of water hyacinth biomass in the presence of surfactants. Prior to hydrolyzing, the water hyacinth was treated utilizing alkali with and without microwave assistance. It was revealed that the microwave improved the removal of lignin and hemicellulose. The treated water hyacinth biomass was also characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) Spectroscopy. The effect of surfactant and the assistance of microwave and ultrasound were comprehensively studied. Some parameters varied, including stirring speed, surfactant type, concentration, and reaction time. The results indicated that microwave and ultrasound could enhance the reaction rate. Tween 80 here could improve conventional, microwave-assisted, and ultrasound-assisted hydrolysis of water hyacinth biomass. It was found that the ultrasound-assisted hydrolysis was better than that of others. The results of this research can be used as the groundwork for further developing the lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis process, especially in an advanced enzymatic hydrolysis process.

In order to eliminate the fishy and bitter taste of mussel hydrolysate, the fermentation process of mussel (Mytilus edulis) hydrolysate were studied in this paper. Angel fruit wine yeast was used to ferment and the optimal fermentation technology was determined by optimizing the yeast addition, fermentation temperature and time according to sensory score and protein loss rate. The difference of flavor profile before and after fermentation was studied by sensory science combined with automatic amino acid analysis and mass spectrometry. The results showed when the fruit wine yeast was added at 0.2% and fermented at 35 ℃ for 2.0 h after treatment, the fishy, earthy and halal flavor of the hydrolysate decreased significantly, while the fermented and fruity flavor increased significantly (P

Schiff bases are compounds that are widely distributed in nature and have practical value for industry and biomedicine. Another important use of Schiff bases is identifying metal ions and different molecules, including proteins. Their proneness to hydrolysis limits the utilization of Schiff bases to mainly non-aqueous solutions. However, by introducing –OH and –SH substituents to aromatic amine-bearing rings, it is possible to increase the resilience of the Schiff base to destruction in water. The present paper discusses how the hydroxyl or thiol group influences the spectral properties and kinetics of the hydrolysis and formation of Schiff bases derived from pyridoxal 5′-phosphate and aniline, 2-hydroxyaniline, and 2-mercaptoaniline using quantum chemical data. The spectral variation between different imines can be explained by taking into account the geometry and frontier molecular orbital alteration induced by the substituents. The changes in the hydrolysis rate are analyzed using the computed values of local reactivity indices.

Hydrogen (H2) production is a key challenge for green carbon-free sustainable energy. Among the H2 evolution methods from H-rich materials, ammonia borane (AB) solvolysis stands as a privileged source under ambient and sub-ambient conditions given its stability, non-toxicity, and solubility in protic solvents, provided suitable and optimized nanocatalysts are used. In this paper dedicated to Prof. Avelino Corma, we comparatively review AB hydrolysis and alcoholysis (mostly methanolysis) in terms of nanocatalyst performances and discuss the advantages and inconveniences of these two AB solvolysis methods including AB regeneration.

Polylactide (PLA) is one of the most promising biodegradable and biocompatible polymer materials. Estimation of hydrolytic destruction of PLA is of high importance for their applications both at planning and at real-time exploitation. This paper reports on synthesis and applicability of fluorescein-O-dihexanoate as a pro-fluorescent marker of hydrolytic destruction of two types of PLA-based materials. Fluorescence enhancement correlated with adequately more fast destruction of poly-D,L-lactide as well as less stability to alkaline hydrolysis. Thus, applicability of fluorescein-O-dihexanoate for fluorescence-based estimation of hydrolytic destruction of PLA-based materials is shown in quite real time mode.

The continued reliance on non-renewable fossil resources has led to serious environmental issues. In light of these concerns, the transition from non-renewable sources to more sustainable ones have been explored, as exemplified by the production of bio-based lactic acid via lignocellulosic biomass bio-refinery process. Malaysia, the second-largest producer of palm oil in the world, generates abundant, cheap, and underutilized oil palm biomass in the form of palm kernel cakes. Comprised of 50% fermentable hexose sugars, palm kernel cakes have emerged as an interesting feedstock substitute in the production of bio-based fine chemicals, e.g., lactic acid. This paper focuses on current work based on selected literature published in the 21st century on the exploitation of palm kernel cakes as a novel feedstock in bio-refinery processes after addressing the current global demand and potential commodity applications of bio-based lactic acid. It then discusses current research on potential lactic acid-producing microorganisms, with particular attention to bacteria, and different pretreatment methods for carbohydrate recovery from palm kernel cakes. It also highlights the potential of oil palm biomass, especially palm kernel cakes, as a promising commodity that contributes to sugar platforms in value-added products, e.g., biofuel, bioenergy, ethanol, acids, and fine chemicals.

Introduction. The article provides a review of technologies for membrane fractionation of various hydrolyzed food substrates in membrane bioreactors (MBR). In food industry, MBRs are popular in functional food production, especially in the processing of whey, which is a very promising raw material due to its physicochemical composition. Study objects and methods. The research was based on a direct validated analysis of scientific publications and featured domestic and foreign experience in MBR hydrolysis of protein raw material. Results and discussion. The MBR hydrolysis of proteins combines various biocatalytic and membrane processes. This technology makes it possible to intensify the biocatalysis, optimize the use of the enzyme preparation, and regulate the molecular composition of hydrolysis products. The paper reviews MBRs based on batch or continuous stirring, gradient dilution, ceramic capillary, immobilized enzyme, etc. Immobilized enzymes reduce losses that occur during the production of fractionated peptides. Continuous MBRs are the most economically profitable type, as they are based on the difference in molecular weight between the enzyme and the hydrolysis products. Conclusion. Continuous stirred tank membrane reactors have obvious advantages over other whey processing reactors. They provide prompt separation of hydrolysates with the required biological activity and make it possible to reuse enzymes.

This paper presents an overview of the chemical recycling methods of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) described in the scientific literature in recent years. The review focused on methods of chemical recycling of PET including hydrolysis and broadly understood alcoholysis of polymer ester bonds including methanolysis, ethanolysis, glycolysis and reactions with higher alcohols. The depolymerization methods used in the literature are described, with particular emphasis on the use of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and ionic liquids, as well as auxiliary substances such as solvents and cosolvents. Important process parameters such as temperature, reaction time, and pressure are compared. Detailed experimental results are presented focusing on reaction yields to allow for easy comparison of applied catalysts and for determination of the most favorable reaction conditions and methods.

The conversion of rice hulls into fermentable saccharides was explored through steam pretreatment employing 2.5% SO2. The interaction between temperature and time was assessed by means of the response surface method to achieve optimum contents of C6-sugars in water-insoluble solids (WIS) and C5-sugars in the liquor. Pretreatment carried out at 218 °C for 2.3 min released liquor containing 55.4 g/L of sugars (29.1 g/L of xylose). In parallel, the WIS was subjected to enzymatic saccharification using different solid and enzyme loads via an experimental design: assays using 22.0% WIS and 20.0 filter paper units (FPU)/g led to 90.6 g/L of glucose, corresponding to a yield of 86.4% and an overall yield of 72.4%. The data reported are the highest ever found for such raw material, making it attractive to compete with conventional lignocellulosic biomass.

In aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactors, granules of different sizes coexist in a single reactor. Their differences in settling behaviour cause stratification in the settled granule bed. In combination with substrate concentration gradients over the reactor height during the anaerobic plug-flow feeding regime, this can result in functional differences between granule sizes. In this study, we compared the hydrolytic activity in granules of 4 size ranges (between 0.5 and 4.8 mm diameter) collected from a full-scale AGS installation. Protease and amylase activities were quantified through fluorescent activity assays. To visualise where the hydrolytic active zones were located within the granules, the hydrolysis sites were visualized microscopically after incubating intact and sliced granules with fluorescent casein and starch. The microbial community was studied using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and sequencing. The results of these assays indicated that hydrolytic capacity was present throughout the granules, but the hydrolysis of bulk substrates was restricted to the outer 100 µm, approximately. Many of the microorganisms studied by FISH, such as polyphosphate and glycogen accumulating organisms (PAO and GAO), were abundant in the vicinity of the hydrolytically active sites. The biomass-specific hydrolysis rate depended mainly on the available granule surface area, suggesting that different sized granules are not differentiated in terms of hydrolytic capacity. Thus, the substrate concentration gradients that are present during the anaerobic feeding in AGS reactors do not seem to affect hydrolytic activity at the granule surfaces. In this paper, we discuss the possible reasons for this and reflect about the implications for AGS technology.

Water pollution has caused the ecosystem to be in a state of imbalance for a long time. It has become a major global ecological and environmental problem today. Solving the potential hidden dangers of pollutants and avoiding unauthorized access to resources has become the necessary condition and important task to ensure the sustainable development of human society. To solve such problems, this review summarizes the research progress of nanomaterials in the field of water aimed at the treatment of water pollution and the development and utilization of new energy. The paper also tries to seek scientific solutions to environmental degradation and to create better living environmental conditions from previously published cutting edge research. The main content in this review article includes four parts: advanced oxidation, catalytic adsorption, hydrogen, and oxygen production. Among a host of other things, this paper also summarizes the various ways by which composite nanomaterials have been combined for enhancing catalytic efficiency, reducing energy consumption, recycling, and ability to expand their scope of application. Hence, this paper provides a clear roadmap on the status, success, problems, and the way forward for future studies.

Introduction. Improving technologies and providing young farm animals with high-quality feed are the primary tasks for successful reproduction and maintenance of dairy cattle. The research objective was to assess the quality characteristics of colostrum and milk replacers, as well as their technological prospects. Study objects and methods. The research featured colostrum, calf milk replacers (CMR), processing methods, and quality characteristics. The paper introduces an analysis of various sustainable processes of obtaining new CMRs. Results and discussion. The article describes colostrum: recommended intake for young calves, qualitative characteristics, and control methods. It focuses mostly on the microbiological characteristics of colostrum, as well as on its role in developing the immune system of calves and the prospects of enzymatic regulation of its functional properties. Enzymatic regulation is based on deep proteins hydrolysates and a highly active serine protease (alcalase). The authors studied variants of using various enzyme preparations and bacterial starter cultures for obtaining hydrolyzed and fermented colostrum, analyzed the main process indicators of milk replacers with intermediate moisture content, and tested various methods for assessing the fatty acid and protein composition of concentrated milk replacers. Production methods proved to have a significant impact on the indicators in question. Conclusion. Reproduction of the dairy herd genetic potential depends on the diet of the young farm animals, and so does the economy of agricultural production. Enzymatic processing of raw materials proved to be the most promising approach for obtaining products with improved functional properties. Deep colostrum hydrolysates can also be an important part of functional foods for children, athletes, in dietary foods, etc.

Polymers are known to degrade in their use conditions, with the risk that their properties reach unacceptable level. This paper reviews the modeling of modifications occurring at molecular and architectural changes occurring during their chemical ageing, with the aim of predicting the physical (mechanical) properties, all values being linked by structure properties relationships.

Agricultural crop residues like stems, straws and leaves are valuable resources for biofuel production, especially methane, due to anaerobic digestion. Biogas from agricultural lignocellulosic wastes is capable of attaining sustainable energy yields without environmental pollution. Farmers in many developing countries burn these wastes throughout their fields, imposing environmental hazard due to emission of greenhouse gases. The main problem in this field is the recalcitrance of the agricultural lignocellulose waste that limits its enzymatic degradation and hydrolysis efficiency and consequently decreases biogas production. Therefore, efficient pre-treatments prior to anaerobic digestion are essential. Various pre-treatment methods are used for increasing the anaerobic digestibility of lignocellulose biomass, such as physical (mechanical, thermal, etc.), chemical, biological and combined pre-treatments. This paper reviews different pre-treatments used in anaerobic digestion for the agricultural lignocellulosic wastes and explains the advantages and disadvantages of each. The most frequently used pre-treatments for main agricultural wastes in process of biogas production are also introduced.

The relevance of the research is the rationale for utilization of urea nitrate formed in the previously developed process of urea denitration of uranium nitrate refined raffinates for nuclear fuel fabrication enterprises. In this paper, we consider the results of the quantitative hydrolysis of urea nitrate into ammonium nitrate used in the hydrometallurgy of uranium. Objects: model solutions of carbamide nitrate with a concentration of 100–500 g/l with the addition of various reagents: nitric acid, ammonium nitrate. Methods: IR spectroscopy, pH meter, spectrophotometry, gas chromatography. Results. IR spectroscopy, pH metry, spectrophotography. The authors have studied urea nitrate hydrolysis at atmospheric pressure, at temperatures of 70–105 °С, concentrations of the initial solution of 100–500 g/l and with the addition of various reagents – nitric acid and ammonium nitrate. It was found that increasing temperature contributes to hydrolysis intensification; the addition of nitric acid at a concentration of 100 g/l slows down the process, and the addition of ammonium nitrate practically does not affect the hydrolysis of urea nitrate. IR spectroscopic studies suggest that heating solutions with initial concentrations of 100 and 200 g/l at 90 °С for 20 hours with the discharge of evolved gases leads to the complete hydrolysis of urea nitrate. The degree of hydrolysis of urea nitrate and the degree of its conversion to ammonium nitrate coincide at acidic and neutral pH values. A spectroscopic study together with chemical analysis data confirmed the presence of urea nitrate bicarbonate and ammonium nitrate in the hydrolysis products. No intermediate hydrolysis products were detected.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are nanoscale particles made from cellulose. They have many unique properties such as being lightweight, stiff, and renewable, making them promising for a variety of applications in a wide range of industries, including materials science, energy storage, and biomedicine. In this paper, a two-stage (swelling-SA-catalyzed) method including IL pretreatment and solid acid hydrolysis process was developed to extract CNCs with high purity and good thermal stability from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). In the first stage, the swelling of MCC in ionic liquid was studied with the assistance of ultrasonication, and it was found that the amorphous regions became more disordered while the crystalline areas were selectively retained under the conditions of 30 min of reaction time, 45 °C of temperature, 2% of ionic liquid water content and 1:4 mass ratio of cellulose to ionic liquid. CNCs were extracted using solid acid hydrolysis, with a 45 wt% solid acid to cellulose ratio and a 5.0 h hydrolysis process at 45 °C. The morphology, crystallinity, surface characteristics and thermo stability of the sample were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Results demonstrated the highly thermostable CNCs were successful extracted with rodlike shape of 300 ± 100 nm in length and 20 ± 10 nm in width. Solid acid recovery and reuse were also studied, revealing a promising candidate that can reduce the environmental impact associated with chemical products.

Citric acid (CA) treatment is a convenient, mild and environmentally friendly strategy to modify the composition, structure and function of starch through hydrolysis and esterification, which expands the application of starch in industry. In this paper, the effects of CA modification on amylose content, amylopectin chain length distribution, microscopic morphology, solubility and swelling ability, thermodynamic properties, gelatinization properties, digestibility properties, texture properties and the film-forming properties of starch were summarized. The application status and development trend of CA modified starch were reviewed, which has important implications for the targeted utilization of CA modified starch in the future.

Cephalosporin enzymatic hydrolysis technology is a green technology for recovering 7-amino-3-deacetoxycephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA) from cephalosporin mother liquor. Solubility is critical for the production and purification of 7-ADCA. In this paper, the solubility of 7-ADCA and phenylglycine was measured. Solubility-temperature correlation model and solubility-pH correlation model were investigated, and Akaike information criterion (AIC) analysis was performed. The kinetic parameters of the enzymatic hydrolysis reaction of cephalexin, cefradine, and cefadroxil were determined, and the reaction rates under different substrate concentrations were measured, and the Lineweaver–Burk double-reciprocal equation was used to draw a graph. The Michaelis constants Km/(mg/mL) were 73.98, 583.84, 38.66, Vmax/(mg/mL·min) 4.20, 16.00, 1.96, respectively. The experimental results show that amphoteric compounds and buffers can prompt the reaction, low concentration of methanol promotes the reaction, while high concentration of methanol inhibits the reaction, and ethanol, isopropanol, tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG), 1,4-dioxane all have different degrees of inhibition on the reaction speed. Finally, based on thermodynamic and kinetic studies, a process technology for the preparation of 7-ADCA by hydrolysis catalyzed of cephalexin was developed. It was confirmed that the proposed process route of preferential removal of phenylglycine by elution and/or cooling crystallization was reasonable and effective. The 7-ADCA crystal products obtained by crystallization were characterized by PXRD, thermal analysis, infrared, electron microscope, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Organisms release their nucleic acid in the environment, including the DNA and RNA, which can be used to detect their presence. eDNA/eRNA techniques are being used in different sectors to identify organisms from soil, water, air, and ice. The advancement in technology led to easier detection of different organisms without impacting the environment or the organism itself. These methods are being employed in different areas, including surveillance, history, and conservation. eDNA and eRNA methods are being extensively used in aquaculture and fisheries settings to understand the presence of different fish species and pathogens in water. However, there are some challenges associated with the reliability of results because of the degradation of nucleic acid by several factors. In aquaculture, there are several diseases and parasites detected with these methods. In this review, we discuss different aquaculture diseases and parasites detected with eDNA/eRNA approach and the fate of these nucleic acids when subjected to different water quality and environmental parameters. This review intends to help the researcher with the potential of eDNA/eRNA-based detection of pathogens in aquaculture; this will be useful to predict a potential outbreak before it occurs. Along with that, this paper intends to help people understand several factors that degrade and can hamper the detection of these nucleic acids.

Complete utilization of lignocellulosic biomass through the creation of value-added coproducts is one of the key strategies of the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) for the cost-effective production of biofuels and biochemicals. A green approach to producing lightweight and high specific surface area (SSA) activated carbons (ACs) from sustainable biomass sources is of great interest to producers and users of energy devices such as batteries and supercapacitors. While direct conversion from biomass has been studied extensively, AC with relatively high surface areas can be produced more cost-effectively when leveraged as a co-product from a biorefinery. In this paper, we discuss the production of high specific surface area activated carbons from residual fiber (fiber remaining after extraction of C5-sugars) generated as part of a C5 biorefinery. The surface, morphological characteristics using SEM and TEM, and energy storage behavior of ACs produced using the C5 extracted residual fiber were evaluated in the present study. The ACs produced from the residual fiber delivered an order of magnitude higher surface area than the one directly from corn pericarp fiber and soy hulls. The surface area of the ACs produced from pre-hydrolysis DDG was only 10 m2/g compared to 689 m2/g for soy hulls whereas after hydrolysis these values increased significantly (DDG: 1700 m2/g and soy hulls: 1300 m2/g). TEM images indicated high exfoliation, explaining the change in surface area values. Under the same current density (500 mA/g) the cycling performance of the ACs increased as the surface area increased significantly.

Within the paper the results of conducted researches in order to obtain a protein hydrolysate from wool waste as raw material are presented. The experiments were conducted in two variants: a) alkaline hydrolyse using potassium hydroxide, a mix of potassium hydroxide with urea and a mix of potassium hydroxide with sodium hydroxide as well as b) acidic hydrolyse with sulfuric acid or a mix of sufuric acid with phosphoric acid in different proportions. The parameters intervals used were: pH 0,5-2,5 for acidic hydrolyse and pH 9,5-13,5 for the alkalinic one; temperatures between 120-150 °C and pressures between 1,4-4,6 bar. Acid hydrolysis is favored by the high proportion of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, a low pH and from high temperature and pressure. The alkaline hydrolysis is favored by a pH higher then 12 as well as the urea content. A high temperature and pressure has a beneficial effect over alkaline hydrolysis.

Abstract Polyurethane (PUR) shoe soles from collections held by the Alfred Gillett Trust, stored for up to 50 years, were analysed for the presence of 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (4,4′-MDA)—a substance of very high concern in Europe and classified as a carcinogen in USA. A review of the literature revealed no papers on long term room-temperature hydrolysis of urethane or urea linkages leading to the spontaneous formation of 4,4′-MDA in polyester or polyether polyurethanes made from 4,4′-diisocyanatodiphenylmethane (MDI). However, evidence emerged of its potential formation and a possible handling hazard was consequently identified in the heritage collection. By chemical analysis, shortcomings in the current literature could be addressed. Calibration of liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry equipment showed analysis of 4,4′-MDA was possible down to 1 ppm with an error of 2.5 ppm. No 4,4′-MDA was found in the PUR analyte solutions at a concentration > 1 ppm. Under these experimental parameters the samples were shown to comply with the industrially accepted CertiPUR 2017 standard for commercial slab-stock foams. Furthermore, no 4,4′-MDA was found in solution after an ‘accelerated anaerobic hydrolysis test’ on the sole materials. This test was designed and developed to assess the likelihood of future formation of the aromatic amine via a hydrolysis-only mechanism/s. Finally, 4,4′-MDA itself was heated in air at 70 °C under ‘humid’ conditions to examine its stability. In this experiment the 4,4′-MDA altered in appearance and was reduced to ca 30% of its original weight. Subject to more work, it is conceivable 4,4′-MDA could be formed by hydrolysis, but degraded over time, and not detected in these tests.

Abstract Background We recently confirmed that the deactivation of T. reesei cellulases at the air–liquid interface reduces microcrystalline cellulose conversion at low enzyme loadings in shaken flasks. It is one of the main causes for lowering of cellulose conversions at low enzyme loadings. However, supplementing cellulases with small quantities of surface-active additives in shaken flasks can increase cellulose conversions at low enzyme loadings. It was also shown that cellulose conversions at low enzyme loadings can be increased in unshaken flasks if the reactions are carried for a longer time. This study further explores these recent findings to better understand the impact of air–liquid interfacial phenomena on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose contained in Avicel, Sigmacell, α-cellulose, cotton linters, and filter paper. The impacts of solids and enzyme loadings, supplementation with nonionic surfactant Tween 20 and xylanases, and application of different types of mixing and reactor designs on cellulose hydrolysis were also evaluated. Results Avicel cellulose conversions at high solid loading were more than doubled by minimizing loss of cellulases to the air–liquid interface. Maximum cellulose conversions were high for surface-active supplemented shaken flasks or unshaken flasks because of low cellulase deactivation at the air–liquid interface. The nonionic surfactant Tween 20 was unable to completely prevent cellulase deactivation in shaken flasks and only reduced cellulose conversions at unreasonably high concentrations. Conclusions High dynamic interfacial areas created through baffles in reactor vessels, low volumes in high-capacity vessels, or high shaking speeds severely limited cellulose conversions at low enzyme loadings. Precipitation of cellulases due to aggregation at the air–liquid interface caused their continuous deactivation in shaken flasks and severely limited solubilization of cellulose.

Introduction− There is a great interest in reducing the use of fossil fuels due to the variation of prices and strong regulatory controls, which is why methods are being sought to reduce fuel consumption in internal combustion engines, such as the supply of products from the Hydrolysis of the water in the engine manifold.Objective−The objective of this paper is to present the results of an experimental methodology applied to esti-mate the mechanical and environmental performance of a vehicle fueled with gasoline and natural gas, when the engine is supplied with products resulting from the hydrolysis of water.Methodology−For the supply of said products to the vehicle, an external hydrolysis device was installed, and the vehicle has been instrumented with a fifth wheel, temperature and engine revolutions speed sensors, to perform acceleration tests on a flat road and a road with longitudinal slope angle. Additionally, torque and power tests with a chassis dynamometer, and pollutant emis-sions and fuel consumption tests were carried out. The tests were conducted in the outskirts of the city of Bo-gotá DC - Colombia, located at 2650 m above sea level.Results− The results show that the products of hydro-lysis do not improve the mechanical performance of the vehicle, since they increase the time to arrive at the speeds defined in the acceleration tests up to 18% in the engine with gasoline and 7% in the engine with natural gas, and the torque and power are increase by around 1%. On the other hand, the results of the pollu-ting emissions tests indicate that fuel consumption is reduced by about 7%.Conclusions−The results indicate that the performance of the vehicle does not improve, although fuel consump-tion decreases, the environmental performance does not decrease

Abstract Background The depletion of fossil fuel and its huge environmental problem are currently a concern for a scientific community in the area of energy engineering. This opened research opportunities for searching alternate renewable energy sources especially biofuel production from lignocellulose biomass resources. The main objective of this paper is to review the delignification and hydrolysis capabilities of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi). Results Currently, different types of lignocellulose biomass pretreatment technologies are available. All of the technologies are either in lab scale or in pilot scale. Among the pretreatment technologies, biological pretreatments attract many attentions because of their eco-friendly advantages, performed at a mild temperature and do not produce inhibitory compounds during the pretreatment process. Industrial-scale biofuel production using biological delignification and hydrolysis process is still at lab scale, and intensive research works are required. The cost of biofuel production from lignocellulose biomass is currently expensive. Conclusion Searching for the best microbial strains having efficient lignin-degrading and polysaccharide-hydrolyzing capabilities is vital to realize industrial-scale biofuel production from lignocellulose biomass. Process optimization along with genetic engineering of microorganisms is seen as a potential for biofuel production from lignocellulose biomass.

In search of native cellulase-producing microorganisms, collected from lignocellulosic waste in Ecuatorian Andes, Amazon region, and in Antarctica, 17 sporulating strains were found. These strains and the cocktails obtained from them were used in assays to measure glucose concentration produced from carboxymethylcellulose, crystalline cellulose and filter paper units (FPU). The obtained values were that only the cocktail from Bacillus sp. collected at a “panela” artisan factory produced glucose concentrations that might be of interest, after the cellulases degraded all substrates: carboxymethylcellulose, crystalline cellulose and filter paper. The amount of glucose liquor obtained in the best assay was measured in HPLC, producing 3.45 mg/ml of glucose after the action of endo-beta-glucanase and 1.8 mg/ml of glucose in presence of exo-glucanase. The amount of filter paper units produced in vitrowere 0.0073 FPU. However, the study found that, since the Payback Period for the investment was 6 years, it would not be recommendable to invest in a production plant with these cocktails. Due to this, is recommended to continue the research with this strain of Bacillus sp. to improve the dynamic indicators.

Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant and renewable resource that potentially contains large amounts of energy. It is an interesting alternative for fossil fuels, allowing the production of biofuels and other organic compounds. In this paper, a review devoted to the processing of lignocellulosic materials as substrates for fermentation processes is presented. The review focuses on physical, chemical, physicochemical, enzymatic, and microbiologic methods of biomass pretreatment. In addition to the evaluation of the mentioned methods, the aim of the paper is to understand the possibilities of the biomass pretreatment and their influence on the efficiency of biofuels and organic compounds production. The effects of different pretreatment methods on the lignocellulosic biomass structure are described along with a discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of each method, including the potential generation of inhibitory compounds for enzymatic hydrolysis, the effect on cellulose digestibility, the generation of compounds that are toxic for the environment, and energy and economic demand. The results of the investigations imply that only the stepwise pretreatment procedure may ensure effective fermentation of the lignocellulosic biomass. Pretreatment step is still a challenge for obtaining cost-effective and competitive technology for large-scale conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars with low inhibitory concentration.
