The Garden in Motion is a concept that was developed by Gilles Clément in the early 1980s as the result of the experimentation conducted in his garden-house, La Vallée. Clément’s interest in promoting this garden archetype based on managing neglected land led him to write a number of works in order to explain the conceptual underpinnings of his model, with the ultimate aim of having them published. From the writing of the first manuscripts, dating from 1984, to the first edition of “Le jardin en movement” in 1991, he produced a series of different documents that would form the basis of the text that was finally published. It was a long process in which Clément not only had to fully develop his ideas but also to overcome the difficulties involved in finding a company to publish what he called his ‘petit livre’. The aim of this article is to show the creative process behind Clément’s book and its relationship with the creative process of building his garden, while endeavouring to reply to the question of whether it is possible to establish an equivalence between both processes. This is made possible through the analysis of documents kept by Clément in his personal archive, some of which have never been published.

The paper presents aspects regarding the structure, themes and content of graduation papers in the specialization of Industrial Design within Petru Maior University of Târgu Mures.

Construction Engineering and Management (CEM) is a broad domain with publications covering interrelated subdisciplines and considered a key source of knowledge sharing. Previous studies used scientometric methods to assess the current impact of CEM publications; however, there is a need to predict future citations of CEM publications to identify the expected high-impact trends in the future and guide new research efforts. To tackle this gap in the literature, the authors conducted a study using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and Social Network Analysis (SNA) to predict CEM-related citation metrics. Using a dataset of 93,868 publications, the authors trained and tested two machine learning classification algorithms: Random Forest and XGBoost. Validation of the RF and XGBoost resulted in a balanced accuracy of 79.1% and 79.5%, respectively. Accordingly, XGBoost was selected. Testing of the XGBoost model revealed a balanced accuracy of 80.71%. Using SNA, it was found that while the top CEM subdisciplines in terms of the number of predicted impactful papers are “Project planning and design”, “Organizational issues”, and “Information technologies, robotics, and automation”; the lowest was “Legal and contractual issues”. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by studying the citation level, strength, and interconnectivity between CEM subdisciplines as well as identifying areas more likely to result in highly cited publications.

This paper investigates the robustness of a single 3D volumetric corner-supported module made of square hollow-section (SHS) columns. Typically, the moment–rotation (M-θ) behaviour of connections within the module (intra-module) is assumed to be fully rigid rather than semi-rigid, resulting in inaccurate assessment (i.e., overestimated vertical stiffness) during extreme loading events, such as progressive collapse. The intra-module connections are not capable of rigidly transferring the moment from the beams to the SHS columns. In this paper, a computationally intensive shell element model (SEM) of the module frame is created. The M-θ relationship of the intra-module connections in the SEM is firstly validated against test results by others and then replicated in a new simplified phenomenological beam element model (BEM), using nonlinear spring elements to capture the M-θ relationship. Comparing the structural behaviour of the SEM and BEM, under notional support removal, shows that the proposed BEM with semi-rigid connections (SR-BEM) agrees well with the validated SEM and requires substantially lower modelling time (98.7% lower) and computational effort (97.4% less RAM). When compared to a BEM with the typically modelled fully rigid intra-module connections (FR-BEM), the vertical displacement in the SR-BEM is at least 16% higher. The results demonstrate the importance of an accurate assessment of framing rotational stiffness and the benefits of a computationally efficient model.

Fuel consumption optimization is a critical field of research within the automotive industry to meet consumer expectations and regulatory requirements. A reduction in fuel consumption can be achieved by reducing the energy consumed by the vehicle. Several subsystems contribute to the overall energy consumption of the vehicle, including the air conditioning (A/C) system. The loads within the A/C system are mainly contributed by the compressor, condenser fan, and underhood aerodynamic drag, which are the components targeted for overall vehicle energy use reduction in this paper. This paper explores a new avenue for A/C system control by considering the power consumption due to vehicle drag (regulated by the condenser fan and active grille shutters (AGS)) to reduce the energy consumption of the A/C system and improve the overall vehicle fuel economy. The control approach used in this paper is model predictive control (MPC). The controller is designed in Simulink, where the compressor clutch signal, condenser fan speed, and AGS open-fraction are inputs. The controller is connected to a high-fidelity vehicle model in Gamma Technologies (GT)-Suite (which is treated as the real physical vehicle) to form a software-in-the-loop simulation environment, where the controller sends actuator inputs to GT-Suite and the vehicle response is sent back to the controller in Simulink. Quadratic programming is used to solve the MPC optimization problem and determine the optimal input trajectory at each time step. The results indicate that using MPC to control the compressor clutch, condenser fan, and AGS can provide a 37.6% reduction in the overall A/C system energy consumption and a 32.7% reduction in the error for the air temperature reference tracking compared to the conventional baseline proportional integral derivative control present in the GT-Suite model.

The paper presents aspects connected with the application of the principles of the experiential learning theory in engineering education, in teaching graphical subjects. The experiential learning theory presents the process of learning as being cyclical, with four stages - experience, reflection, abstract conceptualization and experimentation, each stage being related to a certain learning style. The paper intends to outline aspects on ways that would help students to develop appropriate learning styles and also, would help to improve student learning, by gaining experience continuously and transforming it into knowledge. The applications presented are focused on applying the experiential learning theory in engineering education, in teaching technical drawing.

This paper introduces the methods of teaching subjects of drawing geometry and 3D modeling used in the High Aviation Academy in Belgrade. These courses are attended in the first year of basic vocational studies of the Department of Aeronautical Mechanical Engineering. The paper will present the objectives of studying subjects, learning outcomes, auditory exercises, as well as learning through the work of students.

The pressure on a horse's back can affect their performance during the equestrian competition. A better pressure distribution on the surface of the horse's back can be obtained using a custom saddle, considering the rider's weight and back anatomy. The first part of the paper presents a recent study regarding the mathematical and CAD methods used to generate the hyperbolic paraboloid of the saddle surface. The second part of the paper shows the saddle design modelled using CAD software. The horse's back and rider's anatomy stay at the base of the saddle's surface. The saddle surface is divided into several areas for a better and more accurate evaluation. The third part of the paper presents the saddle evaluation using the finite elements method, using two load simulation cases in different rider situations. The improved shape of the saddle and conclusions are shown in the last part of the paper.

This paper explores the impact of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the photographic design process. In the context of rapidly evolving technology, AI applications have become increasingly prominent in various fields, including the photographic industry. This study examines how advanced machine learning and image processing algorithms can improve and simplify creative processes in photography. The main issues addressed include the use of AI in automatic image selection and editing, automatic identification of relevant subjects and generation of artistic effects. These technologies bring not only efficiency but also an increase in the quality of the final results. The paper also highlights the ethical issues associated with the use of AI in photographic design and the importance of human control in these automated processes. The study draws on current research in AI and photography, examining practical applications of existing technologies and exploring future prospects. The results indicate that the intelligent integration of AI into the photographic design process can bring significant benefits, but it is essential to consider ethical issues and maintain a balance between human creativity and automation.

The idea of this paper was developed in our minds by seeing a lot of things which could be transformed, to create friendly objects for the people. To create and build a sensory design means to have a lot of inventiveness, to learn about the psychological and physiological challenges. It is about the senses of human being to communicate with others and, of course, with the environmental world. We have agreed that the most important things are touch and sight. In this paper we have developed a few objects which are in accordance with the term of sensory design. We have learned interesting information about sensory design from other authors and we have presented a few of their creations.

In the context of the new directions concerning resource reuse and energy efficiency, the use of meteoric waters represents a sustainable solution in urban development. This paper presents modular tanks designed for the retention and infiltration of meteoric waters. These modular elements not only fulfil the requirements of circular water economy, but also enhance efficiency during implementation. The paper highlights the applicability of modular tanks in both residential and commercial complexes, demonstrating their sustainability in diverse settings. Additionally, the authors stress how important it is to be skilled in manipulating 2D and 3D spatial structures for realizing the geometric design of these modular tanks.

This paper has tried to explain the importance of the general and special principles in logo design. The study was realized on a lot of logos to understand when a designer could use the principles to create wonderful graphic representations. It is about symmetry, asymmetry, proportion, rhythm and harmony, substitution, juxtaposition, using different geometric shapes, lines, curves, silhouettes and stylizations, mirror and illustrative representation and so on. We have explained how to use graphic representations in some fields of activity and to choose the best symbol for a company/university etc. And, of course, it was a significant part about the redesign working. This paper presents a few interpretations and conclusions concerning the design principles applied for logos.

Overall, it offers valuable insights into the transformative potential of these technologies in building design.

This paper has tried to answer to a question: Is it important to use signs, symbols and pictograms to create a graphic and visual language, to communicate between people all over the world? And the answer is YES and will be explained in this paper. These graphic representations can be found in universities and schools, hospitals, airports, museums, libraries, network communication, business centres etc. But why are they so important? Because they inform, guide, allow, prohibit or warn depending on the situation. In our actual world visual communication without written language has become necessary. The main direction of the study was to present/design signage maps, as training models using signs, symbols, colours and pictograms.

Due to the increasing population density in metropolitan areas, architects have focused on high rise building designs that combine architectural considerations with functional requirements. The optimal design of the building shape in the case of wind interaction can be determined using the CFD evaluation method. This study uses the CFD analysis method to analyse the airflow around a new high-rise building. The first part of the paper presents a comprehensive overview of the state of the art regarding the building shapes used and the main simulation method. In the second part of the paper, the buildings model is created using dedicated CAD software. Two simulation cases are being prepared with two wind flow situations at 15 m/s velocity. In the third part of the paper, the results of CFD analysis of the buildings group model are presented. The conclusions of this evaluation are shown in the last part of the paper.

Car mechanics are exposed to high-temperature discomfort in a repair workshop during their daily work. This work studies thermal comfort in auto workshops by determining the PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) and PDD (Predicted Percentage dissatisfied Index) according to the actual standards. The first part of this work presents the current stage of the method for determining thermal comfort by applying a computational fluid dynamics method. The second part of this paper presents the modelling of the internal volume of the repair workshop and the existing work components. In the third part of the paper, the boundary conditions for thermal comfort are created for two cases: in the first case, the heating radiators are opened, and the cooling system works in the heating regime, and in the second case, the heating radiators are closed, and the ventilation system works in the cooling regime. In the final part of the work, the results and conclusions of this study are presented.

This paper approaches the role of Origami Art role in teaching Descriptive Geometry to students, future builders. Using the Art of Paper Folding in the application classes of Descriptive Geometry, we demonstrate that the acquiring of knowledge and skills in educational practice is complemented by the development of creativity, imagination, Aesthetics and team spirit. Origami turned into a source of inspiration for first-year students majoring in Civil, Industrial and Agricultural Construction to build a demountable assembly made of modular origami elements. The element is a modular triangle, made from a rectangle with a side ratio of 1:v2 known as the "Harmony Gate". The construction is original and executed on several levels, from white and colored A4 paper, whose density equals 80 g/m2. The number of origami elements used is calculated by a mathematical formula.

This paper presents a study dedicated to the development of Digital and Smart Tools, based on solved applications of design engineering and reverse engineering. This approach is justified by the fact as well as the need for preparations prior to Composite Additive Manufacturing. Future integration of Digital Smart Tools with Composite Additive Manufacturing will significantly contribute to the efficient and effective support of the green economy, the active, responsible, safe and resilient protection of environment, life and climate. The research involved in this paper contributes to develop Digital and Smart Tools Applications, intended for integrated digital design, development, manufacturing and further predictive maintenance and services, based on robotic systems, extended automatic control, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, including Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulations for Performance Prediction at Design Regime and Off-Design Regimes for jet engines, with the best capabilities to generate and integrate improvements, optimizations and potential innovative solutions. This paper presents significant applications of design, concept engineering development and reverse engineering design, as: 1/ the design of a transonic axial compressor rotor blade, 2/ the design of a swept axial compressor rotor, 3/ concept design engineering developments in case of a swept fan rotor blade, 4/ concept design developments and reverse engineering in case of a HP axial compressor rotor blade, part of Spey 512-14 DW turbofan engine, 5/ reverse engineering design of a Cessna 182 Skylane N223IF light aircraft wheel cover. In line with Europe´s vision for sustainable aviation, this research study and INCAS´ TGA Project "Technological Development Platform for "Green" Technologies in Aviation and Ecological Manufacturing with Superior Added Value; TGA - Technologies for Green Aviation" will significantly contribute to the Green Deal, as a production center using "Green" Technologies in aviation and ecological manufacturing, as well as collaborative developer of Digital and Smart Tools for Composite Additive Manufacturing.

The objective of this work is to analyze and compare AC microgrid (ACMG) solutions to introduce the topic to new researchers. The methodology used to achieve this goal is a systematic literature review using five questions: (1) How have ACMGs evolved in five years? (2) What are the standards for ACMGs? (3) What are the different schemes for connecting MGs to the utility grid? (4) What are the different control schemes in ACMGs? (5) What is an appropriate way to compare results when working with ACMGs? The articles were published in Q1/Q2 journals as based on either the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) and/or the Journal Citation Report (JCR) between 2018 and 2022 and were from three databases: (1) Web of Science (WoS), (2) Scopus, and (3) IEEE Xplore. Publications not describing pure ACMGs, review papers, publications not related to the questions, and papers describing work that did not meet a quality assessment were excluded, resulting in 34 articles being included in this review. Results show: (1) the energy sources and AC bus nature of microgrids over five years, (2) the identification and quantification of cited standards for microgrids, (3) the pros and cons of different schemes for connecting an AC microgrid to the main grid, (4) the control schemes, classified in a hierarchical control structure, and (5) the simulation tools and experimental benches used in microgrids. Most studies considered a generic energy source and a low-voltage three-phase AC bus, 16 standards were found, and the most cited standard was IEEE Standard 1547. The most common connection scheme to the utility grid was a direct connection, most of the works proposed a modification to a hierarchical control system scheme, and the most common simulation tool was MATLAB. The preferred experimental setup consisted of parallel inverters for testing a control scheme, a prototype when proposing a power electronic system, and a laboratory microgrid for testing fault detection methods.

In order to perform the inspection planning process on the coordinate measuring machine (CMM), it is necessary to model the measuring system with workpiece, CMM and fixture. The metrological analysis of the workpiece is then conducted, followed by the creation of a measurement program for simulation on a virtual measuring machine in a CAD environment. This paper presents the modelling and simulation of a virtual measuring system based on a real CMM using PTC Creo Parametric 5.0 software. The simulation involved programming the measuring path and generating a DMIS (*.ncl) file, which represents the standard modelled types of tolerance. The analysis of the metrology of the measuring part for the given forms of tolerance (location, perpendicularity, flatness, etc.) was performed. The components of the CMM and the assembly with defined kinematic connections are also modelled. Following the simulation and generation of the output DMIS file in PTC Creo using the virtual CMM, the real CMM was programmed and used for actual measurements. Subsequently, a measurement report was generated. The main result of this paper is the modelling of an offline Digital Measuring Twin (DMT) based on the DMIS file.

It is of great significance to predict the multistage deformation of the foundation pit. A new neural network method is proposed in this paper. The disadvantages of the BP neural network multistage forecast method are discussed. A multistage recursive neural network model for foundation deformation prediction is established. They are taking a deep foundation pit project in the soft soil area as an example. The multistage deformation prediction method is verified in this paper. This new detection technique is feasible. This method can also be used for multistage forecasting.

The trapped-vortex combustor (TVC) is an alternative combustor design to conventional aeroengine combustors. The separate fuel and air injection of this combustor and its compact design make it a perfect candidate for conventional fuel usage. Moreover, the performance of a trapped-vortex combustor with alternative fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen in the actual operating conditions of an aeroengine is not well understood. The present paper focused on the performance evaluation of TVCs with the futuristic fuels ammonia and hydrogen including under the realistic operating conditions of a combustor. The investigated fuels were injected into a cavity with 0-,15-, 30- and 45-degree transverse-angled air injectors to evaluate the mixing enhancement of the air and fuel under idle and low-power conditions. The mixing behavior of hydrogen showed a significant difference from the conventional fuel, i.e., propane. It was also noticed that the transverse injection of the air helped to improve the mixing efficiency as compared to the normal injection configuration. Mixing efficiency was higher for the 30- and 45-degree transverse-angled air injectors compared to the 0- and 15-degree transverse-angled air injectors.

The aim of this paper is to assess the significant impact of using quantile analysis in multiple fields of scientific research . Here, we focus on estimating conditional quantile functions when the errors follow a GARMA (Generalized Auto-Regressive Moving Average) model. Our key theoretical contribution involves identifying the Quantile-Regression (QR) coefficients within the context of GARMA errors. We propose a modified maximum-likelihood estimation method using an EM algorithm to estimate the target coefficients and derive their statistical properties. The proposed procedure yields estimators that are strongly consistent and asymptotically normal under mild conditions. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed estimators, a simulation study is conducted employing the minimum bias and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) criterion. Furthermore, an empirical application is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in practice.

Abstract The Fennec Fox algorithm (FFA) is a new meta-heuristic algorithm that is primarily inspired by the Fennec fox's ability to dig and escape from wild predators. Compared with other classical algorithms, FFA shows strong competitiveness. The “No free lunch” theorem shows that an algorithm has different effects in the face of different problems, such as: when solving high-dimensional or more complex applications, there are challenges such as easily falling into local optimal and slow convergence speed. To solve this problem with FFA, in this paper, an improved Fenna fox algorithm DEMFFA is proposed by adding sin chaotic mapping, formula factor adjustment, Cauchy operator mutation, and differential evolution mutation strategies. Firstly, a sin chaotic mapping strategy is added in the initialization stage to make the population distribution more uniform, thus speeding up the algorithm convergence speed. Secondly, in order to expedite the convergence speed of the algorithm, adjustments are made to the factors of the formula whose position is updated in the first stage, resulting in faster convergence. Finally, in order to prevent the algorithm from getting into the local optimal too early and expand the search space of the population, the Cauchy operator mutation strategy and differential evolution mutation strategy are added after the first and second stages of the original algorithm update. In order to verify the performance of the proposed DEMFFA, qualitative analysis is carried out on different test sets, and the proposed algorithm is tested with the original FFA, other classical algorithms, improved algorithms, and newly proposed algorithms on three different test sets. And we also carried out a qualitative analysis of the CEC2020. In addition, DEMFFA is applied to 10 practical engineering design problems and a complex 24-bar truss topology optimization problem, and the results show that the DEMFFA algorithm has the potential to solve complex problems.

This study develops a rapid algorithm coupled with the finite element method to predict the fatigue crack propagation process and select the enhancement factor for the equivalent random load spectrum of accelerated fatigue tests. The proposed algorithm is validated by several fatigue tests of an aluminum alloy under the accelerated random load spectra. In the validation process, two kinds of panels with different geometries and sizes are used to calculate the stress intensity factor, critical crack length, and crack propagation life. The simulated and experimental findings indicate that when the aluminum alloy is in a low plasticity state, the crack propagation life exhibits a linear relationship with the acceleration factor. When the aluminum alloy is in a high plasticity state, this study proposes an empirical formula to calculate the equivalent stress intensity factor and crack propagation life. The normalized empirical formula is independent of the geometry and size of different samples, although the fracture processes are different in the two kinds of panels used in our study. Overall, the numerical method proposed in this paper can be applied to predict the fatigue crack propagation life for the random spectrum of large samples based on the results of the simulated accelerated crack propagation process and the accelerated fatigue tests of small samples to reduce the cost and time of the testing.

In this paper, the air flow around a root airfoil model of horizontal axis wind turbine, namely SG6040 is numerically simulated using finite volume method by three turbulence modelling k-ω, k-ω SST, and Spalart-Allmaras in two Reynolds Number of 137,122 and 149,969 and at 0 to 10 degrees angles of attack. The main objective of this paper is to provide a proper numerical model for simulating the root airfoils of wind turbines with small rotor sizes. Also, the effect of angles of attack and Reynolds number on aerodynamic coefficients were investigated and the results were compared with each other. The results show that the k-ω SST turbulence model presents better results than other models and is more consistent with experimental results. Also, by increasing Reynolds number, turbulence models seem to have the same trend and the greatest differences occur in the low Reynolds numbers. The results obtained in this case study can play a significant role in designing wind turbine blades.

This paper presents an inset feed Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna with Multiple slits for sub 6 GHz - 5G Applications. This antenna is proposed with the development, design, running simulations and finally a conclusion of the analysis. The antenna in this paper is implemented using a technique called “inset-feed” and multiple slits. The dielectric used as a substrate is FR-4. The proposed antenna is useful for a sub 6 GHz 5G band, which comes under the 5G band of frequency. The proposed and designed antenna gives the input match of -10.74 dB, and 5.99 dB gain at the design frequency of 5.045 GHz. These outputs are usable for the 5G applications. The antenna is simulated and developed in a radio technology design software Sonnet.

Copulas are well-known tools for describing the relationship between two or more quantitative variables. They have recently received a lot of attention, owing to the variable dependence complexity that appears in heterogeneous modern problems. In this paper, we offer five new copulas based on a common original ratio form. All of them are defined with a single tuning parameter, and all reduce to the independence copula when this parameter is equal to zero. Wide admissible domains for this parameter are established, and the mathematical developments primarily rely on non-trivial limits, two-dimensional differentiations, suitable factorizations, and mathematical inequalities. The corresponding functions and characteristics of the proposed copulas are looked at in some important details. In particular, as common features, it is shown that they are diagonally symmetric, but not Archimedean, not radially symmetric, and without tail dependence. The theory is illustrated with numerical tables and graphics. A final part discusses the multi-dimensional variation of our original ratio form. The contributions are primarily theoretical, but they provide the framework for cutting-edge dependence models that have potential applications across a wide range of fields. Some established two-dimensional inequalities may be of interest beyond the purposes of this paper.

This paper expands upon the state of the art in nonlinear modeling of automotive air conditioning systems. Prior models considered only the effects of the refrigerant compressor and the condenser fan. There are two new aspects included here. First, we create a mathematical model for front-end underhood airflow, considering vehicle speed, condenser fan rotational speed, and active grille shutter position. In addition, we present a new model for the power consumption of the vehicle associated with aerodynamic drag caused by underhood flow, as well as a fan power model which accounts not only for changes in rotational speed but also changes in flow rate. The models developed in this paper are coded in MATLAB/Simulink and assessed for various vehicle driving conditions against a higher-fidelity vehicle energy management model, showing good agreement. By including the active grille shutters as a controllable actuator and the impact of underhood flow on vehicle drag and fan power consumption, control schemes can be developed to holistically target reduced energy consumption for the air conditioning system and, thus, improve the overall vehicle energy efficiency.

Cyber-physical systems, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and big data play significant roles in shaping digital and automated landscape manufacturing. However, to fully realize the potential of these technologies and achieve tangible benefits, such as reduced manufacturing lead times, improved product quality, and enhanced organizational performance, new decision support models need development. Game theory offers a promising approach to address multi-objective problems and streamline decision-making processes, thereby reducing computational time. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date systematic review of the literature on the application of game theory models in various areas of digital manufacturing, including production and capacity planning, scheduling, sustainable production systems, and cloud manufacturing. This review identifies key research themes that have been explored and examines the main research gaps that exist within these domains. Furthermore, this paper outlines potential future research directions to inspire both researchers and practitioners to further explore and develop game theory models that can effectively support the digital transformation of manufacturing systems.
