Hundreds of scientific documents have reported on the application of indocyanine green (ICG) in hepatobiliary surgery in the past 13 years, but few bibliometric studies have been conducted. This study aimed to identify the situations of authors, countries/regions, institutions, journals, and hot topics in this field. The overall status and prospects of the current research in this field can be elucidated by bibliometric analysis. Publications from 2008 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection. The search terms included “liver,” “hepatic,” “gallbladder,” “bile duct,” “surgery,” “hepatectomy,” “ICG,” “indocyanine green,” and related synonyms. The full records of the search results were exported in text, and the cooperation network and hot topics were evaluated and visualized using CiteSpace software. The number of publications increased between 2008 and 2021. A total of 1527 publications were included in the results, and the frequency of citations was 30,742. The largest proportion of the publications emanated from Japan, and the majority of the papers were published by Kokudo. Tian Jie contributed the largest number of papers in China. Research was relatively concentrated among one country/region. The latest hotspots, “preservation” and “resistance”, frequently occurred. Cooperation between authors, countries, and institutions needs to be strengthened for high-quality research. Recent studies have focused on hepatectomy, bile duct resection, liver transplantation, and tumors in this field. Future research may focus on other aspects, such as liver preservation and resistance.

Assessing bowel perfusion in emergency intestinal surgery can prove challenging even for experienced surgeons. The necessity of a technological tool assisting clinicians is undisputed. Near-infrared indocyanine green (NIR-ICG) angiography has been increasingly used in elective colorectal surgery to evaluate intestinal perfusion with promising results. This review aims to answer whether a similar outcome can be observed in acute cases of bowel ischemia. We conducted online research of the literature using keywords such as “indocyanine green”, “bowel”, “emergency” and “ischemia”, to identify articles concerning the use of ICG-angiography in evaluating bowel perfusion during emergency operations. PubMed was the primary database. 11 articles were included in this systematic review with a total of 358 patients. Most papers showed a positive effect after using NIR-ICG-angiography, whereas one study indicated the limitations of the method by exhibiting increased reoperation and mortality rates. Moreover, a significant variation in indocyanine green (ICG) dose and fluorescence identification systems was observed. NIR-ICG-angiography has the potential to become a fundamental tool in emergency intestinal operations. Nevertheless, additional research, especially high-quality, randomized studies, as well as quantification techniques are still needed to support these preliminary observations.

Background: Accidental parathyroidectomy during thyroid surgery can lead to temporary or permanent hypocalcemia and serious morbidity. Proper identification of parathyroid glands during surgery can be an effective way to prevent this complication. Methods: The keywords “parathyroid gland,” “preserve,” “protect,” “inadvertent or accidental parathyroidectomy,” “surgery,” and “dissection” were used to search Medline and Embase databases. A total of 133 articles were selected after preliminary review, of which 80 indexed papers were reviewed for subject relevance. Results: Imaging techniques, such as the use of carbon nanoparticles or indocyanine green angiography, and operative techniques, such as meticulous capsular dissection of the thyroid gland, were associated with significantly improved rates of avoidance of inadvertent parathyroidectomy. Conclusion: During thyroid surgery, the use of imaging and careful operative techniques can prevent parathyroid injury. This, in turn, can prevent complications resulting from hypoparathyroidism such as tetany, ECG changes, and neurological sequelae.

Abstract Background To review the available clinical data about the value of Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence imaging for intraoperative detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis. Methods We conducted a systematic review, according to the PRISMA guidelines, for clinical series investigating the possible role of ICG fluorescence imaging in detecting peritoneal carcinomatosis during surgical treatment of abdominal malignancies. With the aim to analyze actual application in the daily clinical practice, papers including trials with fluorophores other than ICG, in vitro and animals series were excluded. Data on patients and cancer features, timing, dose and modality of ICG administration, sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of fluorescence diagnosis of peritoneal nodules were extracted and analyzed. Results Out of 192 screened papers, we finally retrieved 7 series reporting ICG-guided detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis. Two papers reported the same cases, thus only 6 series were analyzed, for a total of 71 patients and 353 peritoneal nodules. The investigated tumors were colorectal carcinomas in 28 cases, hepatocellular carcinoma in 16 cases, ovarian cancer in 26 cases and endometrial cancer in 1 case. In all but 4 cases, the clinical setting was an elective intervention in patients known as having peritoneal carcinomatosis. No series reported a laparoscopic procedure. Technical data of ICG management were consistent across the studies. Overall, 353 lesions were harvested and singularly evaluated. Sensitivity varied from 72.4 to 100%, specificity from 54.2 to 100%. Two series reported that planned intervention changed in 25 and 29% of patients, respectively. Conclusion Indocyanine Green based fluorescence of peritoneal carcinomatosis is a promising intraoperative tool for detection and characterization of peritoneal nodules in patients with colorectal, hepatocellular, ovarian carcinomas. Further prospective studies are needed to fix its actual diagnostic value on these and other abdominal malignancies with frequent spread to peritoneum.

Introduction: The introduction of intraoperative fluorophores represented a significant advancement in neurosurgical practice. Nowadays they found different applications: in oncology to improve the visualization of tumoral tissue and optimize resection rates and in vascular neurosurgery to assess the exclusion of vascular malformations or the permeability of bypasses, with real-time intraoperative evaluations. Research question: A comprehensive knowledge of how fluorophores work is crucial to maximize their benefits and to incorporate them into daily neurosurgical practice. We would like to revise here their applications and clinical relevance. Material and methods: A focused literature review of relevant articles dealing with the versatile applications of fluorophores in neurosurgery was performed. Results: The fundamental mechanisms of action of intraoperative fluorophores are enlightened, examining their interactions with target tissues and the principles driving fluorescence-guided surgery. The clinical applications of the principal fluorophores, namely fluorescein sodium, 5-ALA and indocyanine green, are detailed, in regards to the management of vascular malformations, brain tumors and pathologies treated through endoscopic endonasal approaches. Discussion and conclusion: Future perspective dealing with the development of new technologies or of new molecules are discussed. By critically assessing the efficacy and applications of the different fluorophores, as well as charting their potential future uses, this paper seeks to guide clinicians in their practice and provide insights for driving innovation and progress in fluorescence-based surgery and research.

Indocyanine green guided surgery has gained significant popularity in the last decade in different areas including colorectal, gynecological or even hepatic surgery. Moreover, recently published papers came to demonstrate the utility of the method in pancreatic surgery, providing a better identification of pancreatic lesions and bringing significant information regarding the local anatomy. The current paper represents a literature review of the most relevant studies published so far on this issue.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is an FDA-approved and commercially available dye that exhibits fluorescence in the near infrared region. ICG has been utilized as a contrast agent for a wide range of applications in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics, particularly in-vivo imaging. The optical properties of ICG are known to be sensitive to its concentration, the temperature, and the presence of different serum proteins in its solutions. In this paper, we report a notable effect on modifying the optical properties of ICG using ultrasound (US) waves. Mid-frequency US waves at different powers were applied to ICG and bovine serum albumin (BSA) dissolved in a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution. Our experimental results indicate a significant increase of the absorption and fluorescence of ICG dissolved PBS in the presence of BSA when the applied US is above a threshold pressure (4.4 MPa). In contrast, ICG samples without BSA showed no enhancement effect on ICG's absorption or fluorescence emission after US treatments under the same condition. In addition, the stability of the ICG samples after the US treatments was also measured. Significantly improved stability of ICG samples in the presence of BSA under the US treatment with a pressure higher than 4.4 MPa was observed. The mechanism of the enhancement effects of US on the optical properties of ICG has been discussed in this paper.

In this paper we describe the current status of sentinel node mapping (SNM) in thyroid tumors and its potential perspectives. SNM in thyroid cancer has been tested since the end of the twentieth century, mainly in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and in medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). In PTC, it has been employed to find occult lymph node metastases in the central compartment of the neck as an alternative or indication for prophylactic dissection, by several methods. All of them have proven effective in spotting sentinel nodes, but the results have been somewhat diminished by uncertainty about the clinical significance of occult metastases in differentiated thyroid cancer. SNM in MTC has also been used to find occult lymph node metastases in the lateral compartments of the neck, also with excellent results hindered by a similar doubt about the real clinical significance of MTC micrometastases. Well designed, adequately sized randomized controlled trials are lacking, so SNM in thyroid tumors remains an interesting yet experimental methodology. New technology is emerging that could facilitate such studies, which could add solid information about the clinical significance of occult neck metastases in thyroid cancer.

Radical surgery for gastric cancer remains the only reliable therapeutic tool and cornerstone for definitive treatment. With improving resectability, patients are given a better opportunity for long-term survival. Indocyanine green (ICG) is able to define more precisely the boundaries of the tumor in early and advanced gastric cancer. In addition, it can noticeably improve lymph node dissection and reduce the risk of subsequent complications. In this paper we present our experience with laparoscopic gastrectomy together with a review of the available literature.

Breast cancer represents the most commonly encountered malignancy in women worldwide. In the last decades, due to the improvement of the imagistic techniques and to the wide implementation of screening tests, a significant number of cases are suitable for conservative surgery therefore improving the quality of life. Although the postoperative morbidity after breast conservative surgery is reduced, the procedure can still be associated with certain complications such as breast lymphedema, or wound difficult healing. The aim of the current paper is to discuss the possibility of prevention and treatment of breast lymphedema by using innovative techniques such as indocyanine green.

This comprehensive review aims to explore the applications of indocyanine green (ICG) in robot-assisted urological surgery through a detailed examination of fluorescence-guided techniques. An extensive literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and Scopus, using keywords such as “indocyanine green,” “ICG”, “NIRF”, “Near Infrared Fluorescence”, “robot-assisted”, and “urology”. Additional suitable articles were collected by manually cross-referencing the bibliography of previously selected papers. The integration of the Firefly® technology in the Da Vinci® robotic system has opened new avenues for the advancement and exploration of different urological procedures. ICG is a fluorophore widely used in near-infrared fluorescence-guided techniques. The synergistic combination of intraoperative support, safety profiles and widespread availability comprises an additional asset that empowers ICG-guided robotic surgery. This overview of the current state of the art illustrates the potential advantages and broad applications of combining ICG-fluorescence guidance with robotic-assisted urological surgery.

Dynamic reality has been integrated into developing surgical techniques, with the goals of providing increased intraoperative accuracy, easier detection of critical anatomical landmarks, and better general results for the patient. Enhancement of the reality in surgical theaters using single or multi sensorial augmenters (haptic, thermic and visual) has been reported with various degrees of success. This paper presents a novel device for navigational surgery and ancillary clinical applications based on the fluorescent properties of Indocyanine Green (ICG), a safe, FDA-approved dye that emits fluorescence at higher wavelengths than endogenous proteins. The latest technological developments and the aforementioned convenient quantum behavior of ICG allow for its effective identification in tissues by means of a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) infrared camera. Following fundamental research on the fluorophor in different biological suspensions and at various concentrations, our team has built a device that casts a beam of excitation light at 780nm and collects emission light at 810-830nm, filtering ambient light and endogenous autofluorescence. The emission light is fluorescent and infrared, unlike visible light. It can penetrate tissues up to 1.6cm in depth, providing after digitization into conventional imaging anatomical and functional data of immense intra-operative value.

Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) is used in many pediatric subspecialties but there are currently no standard guidelines or outcome data. We aimed to assess the current status of FGS in pediatrics using the Idea, Development, Exploration, Assessment, and Long-term study (IDEAL) framework. Clinical papers on FGS in children published from January 2000 to December 2022 were systematically reviewed. The stage of research development was measured considering seven fields of application: biliary tree imaging, vascular perfusion for gastrointestinal procedures, lymphatic flow imaging, tumor resection, urogenital surgery, plastic surgery, and miscellaneous procedures. Fifty-nine articles were selected. For each field of application, the overall IDEAL stage was determined to be 2a for biliary tree imaging (10 publications, 102 cases), 1 for vascular perfusion for gastrointestinal procedures (8 publications, 28 cases), 1 for lymphatic flow imaging (12 publications, 33 cases), 2a for tumor resection (20 publications, 238 cases), 2a for urogenital surgery (9 publications, 197 cases), and 1-2a for plastic surgery (4 publications, 26 cases). One report did not belong to any categories. FGS in children is still in an early phase of adoption and development. We recommend using the IDEAL framework as a guide and suggest developing multicenter studies to define the standard guidelines, effectiveness, and outcomes.

Anatomical liver resection guided by segmental portal inflow compression proved to be an efficient tool in order to maximize the curative surgical treatment in hepatocellular carcinoma. In this respect, in the last decades, once the concept of indocyanine guided surgery gained more field, the method has been also implemented in hepatic surgery. Therefore it seems that intravenous injection followed by portal pedicle clamping and liver inspection in infrared light inspection might delimitate the segments of the liver and might successfully guide the gesture of anatomical liver resection. The current paper is a literature review of the studies which analyzed the efficacy and safety of indocyanine green guided liver surgery.

With wide implementation of screening tests for the Human Papilloma Virus, the number of diagnosed cases of premalignant or early stages of cervical cancer has increased considerably. As a consequence, surgeons’ attention has focused on determining how best to limit the surgical procedure so the benefits of the procedure will not be surpassed by postoperative morbidity. In this respect, extended lymph node dissection, routinely associated so far with cervical cancer patients, has in the last decades been replaced with sentinel node detection and biopsy. Initially performed through radiocolloid injection, this method has undergone permanent changes in order to maximize its efficacy and safety. Although the laparoscopic approach had been widely used in the past, a new method has been proposed, i.e., the use of indocyanine green injection, which has yielded promising results for sentinel node detection in the early stages of cervical carcinoma. This paper reviews the literature of the most relevant studies conducted on this topic.

Indocyanine green (ICG) was the first fluorescent dye approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for clinical use in humans and had been widely used in biological imaging for decades. However, there were few public reports on the synthesis method of ICG, and there were few studies on its fluorescence emission mechanism, which limited its chemical derivation and function expansion. In this paper, we provided a one-step condensation method for the synthesis of ICG with 92% yield. We also employed quantum chemical calculations of the frontier molecular orbitals to show that the luminescence of ICG was mainly derived from the polymethine conjugation system, and the naphthalenyl rings at both ends had little effect on the UV–vis absorption and fluorescence wavelengths.

Internal limiting membrane(ILM)peeling is commonly used in the operation of idiopathic macular hole(IMH)surgery. The success of ILM peeling has been greatly improved with the assistance of vital dyes. Currently, several kinds of vital dyes such as indocyanine green(ICG), brilliant blue G(BBG)are applied in the ILM staining. However, all of the vital dyes have potential toxicity and side effects on the retina. In recent years, many kinds of dyes and staining improved emerge in endlessly. This paper reports the progress in the application of different colorants in the operation of IMH.

Nowadays, surgical innovations incorporate new technological conquests and must be validated by evidence-based medicine. The use of augmented reality-assisted indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence has generated a myriad of intraoperative applications such as demonstration of key anatomical landmarks, sentinel lymph nodes, and real-time assessment of local blood flow. This paper presents a systematic review of the clinical evidence regarding the applications of ICG near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence in colorectal surgery. After we removed duplicate publications and screened for eligibility, a total of 36 articles were evaluated: 23 on perfusion assessment, 10 on lymph node mapping, and 3 on intraoperative identification of ureters. Lack of homogenous studies, low statistical power, and confounding evidence were found to be common amongst publications supporting the use of ICG in colorectal surgery, raising concerns over this seductive technique′s cost efficiency and redundancy. The compiled data showed that ICG NIR fluorescence may be a game-changer in particular situations, as proven for low colorectal anastomosis or lateral pelvic lymph node dissection, but it remains controversial for routine use and sentinel lymph node assessment. Further randomized studies are needed to confirm these conclusions. Future research directions include tumor-targeted fluorescence imaging and digital software for quantitative evaluation of fluorescence.

This work is aimed at creating a modified invasive technique for assessing the liver’s functional reserves. A study of the degree of hepatodepression is carried out by measuring the plasma elimination of indocyanine green using the method of optical densitometry. This paper presents test results for an aqueous solution and an albumin solution, as well as the results of measurements of plasma elimination of indocyanine green for patients with liver disease. Perfecting the proposed method will make an important scientific contribution to modern diagnostic medicine. Diagnosing the stages in the progression of the disease and its developing complications can make it possible to rapidly correct the patient’s treatment algorithm, achieving positive outcomes in medical practice.

The growing incidence of cancer is a problem for modern medicine, since the therapeutic efficacy of applied modalities is still not satisfactory in terms of patients’ survival rates, especially in the case of patients with brain tumors. The destructive influence of chemotherapy and radiotherapy on healthy cells reduces the chances of full recovery. With the development of nanotechnology, new ideas on cancer therapy, including brain tumors, have emerged. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is one of these. It utilizes nanoparticles (NPs) that can convert the light, preferably in the near-infrared (NIR) region, into heat. In this paper, we report the use of nanodiamonds (NDs) conjugated with biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) and indocyanine green (ICG) for glioblastoma cancer PTT therapy. The obtained materials were thoroughly analyzed in terms of their PTT effectiveness, as well as their physicochemical properties. The performed research demonstrated that NDs@PDA@ICG can be successfully applied in the photothermal therapy of glioblastoma for PTT and exhibited high photothermal conversion efficiency η above 40%, which is almost 10 times higher than in case of bare NDs. In regard to our results, our material was found to lead to a better therapeutic outcome and higher eradication of glioblastoma cells, as demonstrated in vitro.
