Climate change mitigation by increased paper recycling can alleviate the two-sided pressure on the Swedish forest sector: supplying growing demands for wood-based products and increasing the forest carbon sink. This study assesses two scenarios for making use of a reduced demand for primary pulp resulting from an increased paper recycling rate in Sweden, from the present 72% to 78%. A Conservation scenario uses the saved primary pulp to reduce pulplog harvests so as to increase the forest carbon sink concomitant with constant overall wood product supply. In contrast, a Substitution scenario uses the saved primary pulp to produce man-made cellulosic fibers (MMCF) from dissolving pulp replacing cotton fiber, implying increased overall wood product supply. Our results suggest that utilizing efficiency gains in paper recycling to reduce pulplog harvests is better from a climate change mitigation perspective than producing additional MMCF to substitute cotton fiber. This conclusion holds even when assuming the use of by-products from dissolving pulp making and an indirect increase in MMCF availability. Hence, unless joint improvements across the value chain materialize, the best climate change mitigation option from increased paper recycling in Sweden would seemingly be to reduce fellings rather than producing additional MMCF.

Paper and pencil have shown wide applicability in the area of flexible electronics. Devices based on paper and pencil offer distinctive advantages, including rapid, straightforward, and cost-effective fabrication, as well as recyclability and eco-friendly characteristics. There are several concepts that have been demonstrated using paper and pencil including thermoelectric, strain gauges, capacitive sensors, and biomedical devices. This review article summarizes state of art of pencil-based thermoelectric devices on paper and their future potential.

Background : The incorporation of industrial wastes, such as wood ash and paper sludge, as soil amendments is vital for both environmental sustainability and agroecosystem productivity. Herein, we evaluated the effects of wood ash and paper sludge alone and in combination with biochar on the physicochemical properties and heavy metal leaching risks in podzolic soils. Methods : The treatments included limestone (control), wood ash, paper sludge, wood ash+paper sludge, limestone+biochar, wood ash+biochar, paper sludge+biochar and wood ash+paper sludge+biochar, arranged in a 4 × 2 factorial design with three replicates. The Hydrus-1D model was employed to simulate the water movement under these soil amendments using leaching colums. Results : Overall, wood ash, paper sludge and biochar application significantly increased the pH of amended soil compared to control. Paper sludge amended treatments alone or in combination with biochar significantly decreased bulk density (8%–17%) and increased the total porosity (14%–25%). While biochar addition to wood ash and paper sludge significantly reduced the concentrations of Cd (by 6.42%), Co (by 10.95%), Cu (by 11.76%), Pb (by 30%) and Ni (by 3.75%) in the collected leachates. The treatment paper sludge + biochar was found to be the most effective treatment to retain the heavy metals, with maximum plant available water (0.28 cm ^3 cm ^−3 ) and field capacity (0.36 cm ^3 cm ^−3 ) compared to control treatment. The predictions from Hydrus-1D showed that paper mill wastes with biochar has a significant potential to increase the volumetric moisture contents of amended podzolic soil, with the simulated leaching times and saturation levels closely aligning with the measured values. Conclusion : paper sludge + biochar treatment showed improved soil physicochemical properties and displayed lower heavy metals than allowed limits to be used in soil. Further, experiments are needed to assess the effects of papermill waste products on podzolic soil properties under variable field conditions.

We study a three-species cyclic model whose organisms are vulnerable to contamination with an infectious disease which propagates person-to-person. We consider that individuals of one species perform a self-preservation strategy by reducing the mobility rate to minimise infection risk whenever an epidemic outbreak reaches the neighbourhood. Running stochastic simulations, we quantify the changes in spatial patterns induced by unevenness in the cyclic game introduced by the mobility restriction strategy of organisms of one out of the species. Our findings show that variations in disease virulence impact the benefits of dispersal limitation reaction, with the relative reduction of the organisms’ infection risk accentuating in surges of less contagious or deadlier diseases. The effectiveness of the mobility restriction tactic depends on the deceleration level and the fraction of infected neighbours which is considered too dangerous, thus triggering the defensive strategy. If each organism promptly reacts to the arrival of the first viral vectors in its surroundings with strict mobility reduction, contamination risk decreases significantly. Our conclusions may help biologists understand the impact of defensive strategies in ecosystems during an epidemic.

Handling and storing the immense amounts of data native to the information age is a major challenge in terms of technological sustainability and energy demand. To date, tape storage remains the most widespread method for data archiving, while DNA data storage appears to offer the best data density and long-term stability in the future. However, DNA data storage is still in its infancy primarily due to economic and accessibility challenges. This emphasizes the need for more practical and readily available alternatives. We present a method for data storage utilizing inkjet printable quantum dots on paper with photoluminescence (PL) readout. Our proof of principle study showcases the ability to print and stack multiple bits of data on a single spot by exploiting the unique PL properties of quantum dots. This approach utilizes easily accessible resources, including a consumer-grade printer and paper as the substrate. Additionally, we perform initial stability tests, investigate scalability by controlling emission intensity, and evaluate the potential data density achievable by our approach.

The determination of the dielectric breakdown strengths of microstructurally heterogeneous materials has been a primarily experimental endeavor. We report the development of a microstructure-level model for computationally predicting the breakdown strength and analyzing the interactions between electromagnetic pulses (EMP) and the constituents in a composite of cellulose-based paper and mineral oil found in electrical transformers. The model allows explicit simulation of the material breakdown process by tracking the transition of dielectric constituents from non-conductive to conductive states. The focus is on the electric fields induced in the materials and the overall conditions for dielectric breakdown (defined as the onset of avalanche) caused by the electric field induced in the composite. Responses to three distinct pulse shapes, i.e., Steep Front (SF), Lightning (L), and AC with spectra spanning 60–9 × 10 ^5 Hz are considered. It is found that the breakdown strength of the material is significantly affected by microstructure heterogeneities, the spatial variations of the constituent properties, and the pulse shapes. A probabilistic characterization of the breakdown strength is computationally obtained and compared with experimental measurements. Although one particular material is analyzed, the model and approach are applicable to other heterogeneous materials as well.

Version 11 of the chianti database and software package is presented. Advanced ionization equilibrium models have been added for low charge states of seven elements (C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and S), and represent a significant improvement especially when modeling the solar transition region. The models include the effects of higher electron density and charge transfer on ionization and recombination rates. As an illustration of the difference these models make, a synthetic spectrum is calculated for an electron pressure of 7 × 10 ^15 cm ^−3 K and compared with an active region observation from HRTS. Increases are seen in factors of 2–5 in the predicted radiances of the strongest lines in the UV from Si iv , C iv , and N v , compared to the previous modeling using the coronal approximation. Much better agreement (within 20%) with the observations is found for the majority of the lines. The new atomic models better equip both those who are studying the transition region and those who are interpreting the emission from higher-density astrophysical and laboratory plasma. In addition to the advanced models, several ion data sets have been added or updated, and data for the radiative recombination energy loss rate have been updated.

We use James Webb Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (NIRCam WFSS) and the Near-Infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release survey to measure rest-frame optical emission-line ratios of 155 galaxies at z > 2. The blind NIRCam grism observations include a sample of galaxies with bright emission lines that were not observed on the NIRSpec masks. We study the changes of the H α , [O III ]/H β , and [Ne III ]/[O II ] emission lines in terms of redshift by comparing to lower-redshift SDSS, CLEAR, and MOSDEF samples. We find a significant (>3 σ ) correlation between [O III ]/H β with redshift, while [Ne III ]/[O II ] has a marginal (2 σ ) correlation with redshift. We compare [O III ]/H β and [Ne III ]/[O II ] to stellar mass and H β SFR. We find that both emission-line ratios have a correlation with H β SFR and an anticorrelation with stellar mass across the redshifts 0 < z < 9. Comparison with MAPPINGS V models indicates that these trends are consistent with lower metallicity and higher ionization in low-mass and high-SFR galaxies. We additionally compare to IllustrisTNG predictions and find that they effectively describe the highest [O III ]/H β ratios observed in our sample, without the need to invoke MAPPINGS models with significant shock ionization components.

The Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science program observed the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2022. In this paper, we discuss the four MIRI pointings that observed with longer-wavelength filters, including F770W, F1000W, F1280W, F1500W, F1800W, and F2100W. We compare the MIRI galaxies with the Spitzer/MIPS 24 μ m population in the EGS field. We find that MIRI can observe an order of magnitude deeper than MIPS in significantly shorter integration times, attributable to JWST's much larger aperture and MIRI’s improved sensitivity. MIRI is exceptionally good at finding faint ( L _IR < 10 ^10 L _⊙ ) galaxies at z ∼ 1–2. We find that a significant portion of MIRI galaxies are “mid-IR weak”—they have strong near-IR emission and relatively weaker mid-IR emission, and most of the star formation is unobscured. We present new IR templates that capture how the mid-to-near-IR emission changes with increasing infrared luminosity. We present two color–color diagrams to separate mid-IR weak galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) from dusty star-forming galaxies and find that these color diagrams are most effective when used in conjunction with each other. We present the first number counts of 10 μ m sources and find that there are ≲10 IR AGN per MIRI pointing, possibly due to the difficulty of distinguishing AGN from intrinsically mid-IR weak galaxies (due to low metallicities or dust content). We conclude that MIRI is most effective at observing moderate-luminosity ( L _IR = 10 ^9 –10 ^10 L _⊙ ) galaxies at z = 1–2, and that photometry alone is not effective at identifying AGN within this faint population.

Climate changes may affect ecosystems destabilising relationships among species. We investigate the spatial rock-paper-scissors models with a regional unevenness that reduces the selection capacity of organisms of one species. Our results show that the regionally weak species predominates in the local ecosystem, while spiral patterns appear far from the region, where individuals of every species play the rock-paper-scissors game with the same strength. Because the weak species controls all local territory, it is attractive for the other species to enter the local ecosystem to conquer the territory. However, our stochastic simulations show that the transitory waves formed when organisms of the strong species reach the region are quickly destroyed because of local strength unbalance in the selection game rules. Computing the effect of the topology on population dynamics, we find that the prevalence of the weak species becomes more significant if the transition of the selection capacity to the area of uneven rock-paper-scissors rules is smooth. Finally, our findings show that the biodiversity loss due to the arising of regional unevenness is minimised if the transition to the region where the cyclic game is unbalanced is abrupt. Our results may be helpful to biologists in comprehending the consequences of changes in the environmental conditions on species coexistence and spatial patterns in complex systems.

Mid-infrared (mid-IR) observations are powerful in identifying heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have weak emission in other wavelengths. Data from the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board the James Webb Space Telescope provides an excellent opportunity to perform such studies. We take advantage of the MIRI imaging data from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey to investigate the AGN population in the distant universe. We estimate the source properties of MIRI-selected objects by utilizing spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling, and classify them into star-forming galaxies (SFs), SF-AGN mixed objects, and AGN. The source numbers of these types are 433, 102, and 25, respectively, from four MIRI pointings covering ∼9 arcmin ^2 . The sample spans a redshift range of ≈0–5. We derive the median SEDs for all three source types, respectively, and publicly release them. The median MIRI SED of AGN is similar to the typical SEDs of hot dust-obscured galaxies and Seyfert 2s, for which the mid-IR SEDs are dominated by emission from AGN-heated hot dust. Based on our SED-fit results, we estimate the black hole accretion density (BHAD; i.e., total BH growth rate per comoving volume) as a function of redshift. At z < 3, the resulting BHAD agrees with the X-ray measurements in general. At z > 3, we identify a total of 27 AGN and SF-AGN mixed objects, leading to that our high- z BHAD is substantially higher than the X-ray results (∼0.5 dex at z ≈ 3–5). This difference indicates MIRI can identify a large population of heavily obscured AGN missed by X-ray surveys at high redshifts.

We present results from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Survey on the stellar population parameters for 28 galaxies with redshifts 4 < z < 9 using imaging data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) combined with data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope. The JWST/MIRI 5.6 and 7.7 μ m data extend the coverage of the rest-frame spectral energy distribution to nearly 1 μ m for galaxies in this redshift range. By modeling the galaxies’ SEDs the MIRI data show that the galaxies have, on average, rest-frame UV (1600 Å)— I -band colors 0.4 mag bluer than derived when using photometry that lacks MIRI. Therefore, the galaxies have lower ratios of stellar mass to light. The MIRI data reduce the stellar masses by $\langle {\rm{\Delta }}\mathrm{log}{M}_{* }\rangle =0.25$ dex at 4 < z < 6 and 0.37 dex at 6 < z < 9. This also reduces the star formation rates (SFRs) by 〈ΔlogSFR〉 = 0.14 dex at 4 < z < 6 and 0.27 dex at 6 < z < 9. The MIRI data also improve constraints on the allowable stellar mass formed in early star formation. We model this using a star formation history that includes both a “burst” at z _f = 100 and a slowly varying (“delayed- τ ”) model. The MIRI data reduce the allowable stellar mass by 0.6 dex at 4 < z < 6 and by ≈1 dex at 6 < z < 9. Applying these results globally, this reduces the cosmic stellar-mass density by an order of magnitude in the early Universe ( z ≈ 9). Therefore, observations of rest-frame ≳1 μ m are paramount for constraining the stellar-mass buildup in galaxies at very high redshifts.

We present an investigation into the first 500 Myr of galaxy evolution from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey. CEERS, one of 13 JWST ERS programs, targets galaxy formation from z ∼ 0.5 to >10 using several imaging and spectroscopic modes. We make use of the first epoch of CEERS NIRCam imaging, spanning 35.5 arcmin ^2 , to search for candidate galaxies at z > 9. Following a detailed data reduction process implementing several custom steps to produce high-quality reduced images, we perform multiband photometry across seven NIRCam broad- and medium-band (and six Hubble broadband) filters focusing on robust colors and accurate total fluxes. We measure photometric redshifts and devise a robust set of selection criteria to identify a sample of 26 galaxy candidates at z ∼ 9–16. These objects are compact with a median half-light radius of ∼0.5 kpc. We present an early estimate of the z ∼ 11 rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function, finding that the number density of galaxies at M _UV ∼ −20 appears to evolve very little from z ∼ 9 to 11. We also find that the abundance (surface density [arcmin ^−2 ]) of our candidates exceeds nearly all theoretical predictions. We explore potential implications, including that at z > 10, star formation may be dominated by top-heavy initial mass functions, which would result in an increased ratio of UV light per unit halo mass, though a complete lack of dust attenuation and/or changing star formation physics may also play a role. While spectroscopic confirmation of these sources is urgently required, our results suggest that the deeper views to come with JWST should yield prolific samples of ultrahigh-redshift galaxies with which to further explore these conclusions.

We present a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the morphological and structural properties of a large sample of galaxies at z = 3–9 using early James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) CEERS NIRCam observations. Our sample consists of 850 galaxies at z > 3 detected in both Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/WFC3 and CEERS JWST/NIRCam images, enabling a comparison of HST and JWST morphologies. We conduct a set of visual classifications, with each galaxy in the sample classified three times. We also measure quantitative morphologies across all NIRCam filters. We find that galaxies at z > 3 have a wide diversity of morphologies. Galaxies with disks make up 60% of galaxies at z = 3, and this fraction drops to ∼30% at z = 6–9, while galaxies with spheroids make up ∼30%–40% across the redshift range, and pure spheroids with no evidence for disks or irregular features make up ∼20%. The fraction of galaxies with irregular features is roughly constant at all redshifts (∼40%–50%), while those that are purely irregular increases from ∼12% to ∼20% at z > 4.5. We note that these are apparent fractions, as many observational effects impact the visibility of morphological features at high redshift. On average, Spheroid-only galaxies have a higher Sérsic index, smaller size, and higher axis ratio than disk or irregular galaxies. Across all redshifts, smaller spheroid and disk galaxies tend to be rounder. Overall, these trends suggest that galaxies with established disks and spheroids exist across the full redshift range of this study, and further work with large samples at higher redshift is needed to quantify when these features first formed.

We report on the host properties of five X-ray-luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified at 3 < z < 5 in the first epoch of imaging from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey. Each galaxy has been imaged with the JWST Near-Infrared Camera, which provides rest-frame optical morphologies at these redshifts. We also derive stellar masses and star formation rates for each host by fitting its spectral energy distribution using a combination of galaxy and AGN templates. We find that three of the AGN hosts have spheroidal morphologies, one is a bulge-dominated disk, and one is dominated by pointlike emission. None are found to show strong morphological disturbances that might indicate a recent interaction or merger event. When compared to a sample of mass-matched inactive galaxies, we find that the AGN hosts have morphologies that are less disturbed and more bulge-dominated. Notably, all four of the resolved hosts have rest-frame optical colors consistent with a quenched or poststarburst stellar population. The presence of AGN in passively evolving galaxies at z > 3 is significant because a rapid feedback mechanism is required in most semianalytic models and cosmological simulations to explain the growing population of massive quiescent galaxies observed at these redshifts. Our findings show that AGN can continue to inject energy into these systems after their star formation is curtailed, potentially heating their halos and preventing renewed star formation. Additional observations will be needed to determine what role this feedback may play in helping to quench these systems and/or maintain their quiescent state.

The new capabilities that JWST offers in the near- and mid-infrared (IR) are used to investigate in unprecedented detail the nature of optical/near-IR-faint, mid-IR-bright sources, with HST-dark galaxies among them. We gather JWST data from the CEERS survey in the Extended Groth Strip, jointly with HST data, and analyze spatially resolved optical-to-mid-IR spectral energy distributions to estimate photometric redshifts in two dimensions and stellar population properties on a pixel-by-pixel basis for red galaxies detected by NIRCam. We select 138 galaxies with F150W − F356W > 1.5 mag and F356W < 27.5 mag. The nature of these sources is threefold: (1) 71% are dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 2 < z < 6 with $9\lt \mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\lt 11$ and a variety of specific SFRs (100 Gyr ^−1 ); (2) 18% are quiescent/dormant (i.e., subject to reignition/rejuvenation) galaxies (QGs) at 3 < z < 5, with $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\sim 10$ and poststarburst mass-weighted ages (0.5–1.0 Gyr); and (3) 11% are strong young starbursts with indications of high equivalent width emission lines (typically, [O iii ]+H β ) at 6 < z < 7 (XELG- z 6) and $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\sim 9.5$ . The sample is dominated by disk-like galaxies with remarkable compactness for XELG- z 6 (effective radii smaller than 0.4 kpc). Large attenuations in SFGs, 2 < A ( V ) < 5 mag, are found within 1.5 times the effective radius, approximately 2 kpc, while QGs present A ( V ) ∼ 0.2 mag. Our SED-fitting technique reproduces the expected dust emission luminosities of IR-bright and submillimeter galaxies. This study implies high levels of star formation activity between z ∼ 20 and z ∼ 10, where virtually 100% of our galaxies had already formed 10 ^8 M _⊙ , 60% had assembled 10 ^9 M _⊙ , and 10% up to 10 ^10 M _⊙ (in situ or ex situ).

Carbon paper is one of the most common carbon electrode materials employed in electrochemical research due to its low cost, disposability, and controllable dimensions and scaling. Carbon paper is usually hand cut and a variety of strategies are used to define electrode area. This procedure is tedious, imprecise, and inaccurate, yielding coefficients of variation in peak current output as high as 20%. Imprecision in hand-preparation translates directly to poor reproducibility in electrochemical data leading to challenges in directly comparing data across research groups and research fields. This work introduces an inexpensive and precise method to automatically cut and rapidly wax carbon paper electrodes, circumventing laborious traditional preparation and substantially improving precision in electrochemical data.

With the development of printed electronics technology, the demand for printed conductive inks had also put forward higher standards. The shortcomings of traditional printed circuit boards, such as complex technology, consumables, and pollution, had also been resolved with the development of 3D printing technology. In this paper, low-content silver nanoparticles were blended with graphene alcohol slurry and dissolved in a non-polluting solvent such as absolute ethanol. The synergistic effect of the composite of the hexagonal structure of the graphene sheet and the silver nanoparticles improved the ink’s performance of electrical conductivity, adding water-based polyurethane/acrylic resin system to improve the adhesion between ink and paper. The conductive ink can be used to 3D print circuit circuits on paper. After drying, the resistance was measured. After the battery, diode, and switch were connected, a circuit diagram was made. After pressing the diode emits was lighted. This work is expected to be applied to flexible circuit boards to provide basic research.

In this paper, a simple method for preparing high stability superhydrophobic paper with pH-induced wettability transition was proposed. Firstly, the pH-responsive monomer 2- (dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), the silicon-containing crosslinking monomer 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (TSPM) and the fluorine-containing monomer hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) were polymerized to prepare the pH-responsive polymer PHFMA-PTSPM-PDMAEMA. Afterwards, the amino-modified SiO _2 was grafted onto the polymer to provide roughness and then coated on the paper to prepare the superhydrophobic paper with pH-responsive properties. Further research found that the modified paper prepared by this method not only has strong stability and transparency, but also can realize the reversible regulation of superhydrophobic & lipophilic and super-oleophobic & hydrophilic properties under different pH-induction, and it has important application value in the field of oil-water separation in industrial applications.

Low concentration of biomarkers (proteins, nucleic acids, metabolites) is a major concern in early disease diagnosis due to the very low concentration of these biomarkers at the early stage of any disease. This challenge can be addressed by preconcentrating the biomarkers to improve the sensitivity of the diagnostic device. This paper describes a novel method to preconcentrate the charged molecules on paper using greenly synthesized iron nanoparticles. The iron nanoparticles were synthesized by utilizing plant extract as stabilizing agent, which both minimizes the cost and protects the environment. Three different samples of the nanoparticles were prepared by changing the charge or attaching a functional group (amine) to the surface. The iron nanoparticles act as a charged nanoporous membrane when deposited on the paper pads inducing electrostatic forces around the membrane leading to the concentration of the charged analytes near the boundary of the membrane. Crystal violet was used as a surrogate for the charged biomolecule. We report ∼24-fold increase in the concentration of crystal violet dye within 120 seconds using the positively charged membrane and the 0.2 mM dye solution. The developed experimental set-up eliminates the need for external pumping device and complex fabrication processes making the proposed method cost-effective, environment-friendly, and simple to use.

With the utilization of used newspaper into the paper making industry, bleaching has been an area of concern to obtain a balance between desired brightness and the amount of treatment it requires. Motivation of this study was to optimize bleaching of recycled newsprint fibers in terms of five variables namely hydrogen peroxide charge, amount of sodium hydroxide employed, pulp consistency, bleaching temperature, and bleaching time. Experimental work was conducted in the laboratory to simulate bleaching plant and it was found that higher peroxide charge is better for improvement in brightness, but it is uneconomical to increase peroxide charge indefinitely. The amount of hydrogen peroxide is added so that the residual peroxide at the end of the reaction is not less than 10% of the initially added peroxide. Sodium hydroxide provides alkalinity which is very important for making the fibers flexible and softening of ink particles but it also contributes to pulp yellowing if residual hydrogen peroxide contents are lesser than the minimum required value. So, for 16 kg t ^−1 of hydrogen peroxide, 6 kg t ^−1 of sodium hydroxide prevented the brightness reversion in this study. Higher pulp consistency is better but unavailability of very high consistency pulp mixer in the industry is a limiting factor for higher than 30% pulp consistency. Temperature and time are quite interrelated and, with the given bleaching conditions, a temperature of 95 °C with 10 min residence time was found to be optimum for this study. It was also observed that multiple pre-washings increase brightness and save bleaching chemicals.

This paper describes the design, fabrication, and validation of a paper-based diagnostic device for the rapid diagnosis of hypocalcemia in dairy cattle at the point-of-care (POC). The device incorporates a 3D printed calcium ion-selective membrane (ISM) as the sensing element for free—unbound—calcium in real bovine whole blood samples. With a linear response range of 100 mM to 97.7 μ M, the sensor covers the clinically relevant concentrations of Ca ^2+ associated with both healthy cattle as well as those suffering from hypocalcemia. The components of the Ca ^2+ ion-selective electrodes were successfully translated to a paper-based device to provide a sensing platform that is simple to use, disposable, and low-cost, and is therefore well-situated for applications at the POC. The paper-based calcium sensor showed a Nernstian response between 10 mM and 100 μ M and required only 12 μ l of sample to perform a measurement, which can be accomplished in less than two minutes without the need for time-consuming separation steps. The performance of the paper-based Ca ^2+ sensor was validated using the commercially available epoc ^® Blood Analysis System, which provided results within 5% of the data obtained with 3D printed Ca ^2+ -ISM integrated paper-based device.

In this study, hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate (TSPM) were used for polymerization. First, the one-step method is used to prepare a hydrophobic polymer with low surface energy (PHFMA-PTSPM), and then the amino groups on the modified silica surface are used to graft nanoparticles on the polymer to improve the roughness, thereby a new type of high stable super hydrophobic paper was prepared. The further study found that the paper after superhydrophobic treatment has strong hydrophobicity, and its water contact angle reached 156°± 1.6°. In addition, the coating on the surface of the paper after superhydrophobic modification has high transparency, and the effect of the superhydrophobic coating on the color of the paper is within the acceptable range of human eye recognition. Moreover, the modified paper not only has good weather resistance and folding resistance, but also has strong corrosion resistance to strong acids, strong alkalis and organic solvents.

A novel solid state reaction method has been followed to prepare LiCoO _2 (LCO) using micro porous filter paper as scaffolds. FT-IR spectroscopy confirms the vibration spectrum for the identification of CoO _6 as well as LCO. XRD diffraction analyses confirmed the formation rhombohedral crystal system of the prepared LCO materials with R-3m space group. The sharp XRD diffractogram of filter paper scaffold LCO demonstrate its crystallinity and purity. The presence of high intensity (003) plane, formation of Co–O–Co linkage with (104) plane and splitting of (006)/(012); (108)/(110) planes confirm layered structure of the prepared LCO. FESEM demonstrate that the presence of micropores in the cellulose backbone of filter played significant role for the solid state reaction and can be used as a scaffold to change the morphology of LCO in the microstructural aspect. UV-visible spectroscopy study reveals that the band gap energy of filter papers assisted LCO are less than the LCO prepared directly from raw materials.

The authors of the title paper (Mater. Res. Express 6 (2019) 116213) claim to have grown a nickel boro phthalate (NBP) crystal by the slow evaporation method. A critical analysis of the paper reveals that the so-called NBP is an improperly characterized material. A reinvestigation of the crystal growth reaction has been performed to unambiguously characterize the product. In this letter to the Editor, it is proved that nickel boro phthalate neither contains nickel nor phthalate but is, in fact, boric acid.

The recent survey of the core-collapse supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) with the MIRI instrument on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) revealed a large structure in the interior region, referred to as the “Green Monster.” Although its location suggests that it is an ejecta structure, the infrared properties of the “Green Monster” hint at a circumstellar medium (CSM) origin. In this companion paper to the JWST Cas A paper, we investigate the filamentary X-ray structures associated with the “Green Monster” using Chandra X-ray Observatory data. We extracted spectra along the “Green Monster” as well as from shocked CSM regions. Both the extracted spectra and a principal component analysis show that the “Green Monster” emission properties are similar to those of the shocked CSM. The spectra are well fit by a model consisting of a combination of a nonequilibrium ionization model and a power-law component, modified by Galactic absorption. All the “Green Monster” spectra show a blueshift corresponding to a radial velocity of around −2300 km s ^−1 , suggesting that the structure is on the near side of Cas A. The ionization age is around n _e t ≈ 1.5 × 10 ^11 cm ^−3 s. This translates into a preshock density of ∼12 cm ^−3 , higher than previous estimates of the unshocked CSM. The relatively high n _e t and relatively low radial velocity suggest that this structure has a relatively high density compared to other shocked CSM plasma. This analysis provides yet another piece of evidence that the CSM around Cas A’s progenitor was not that of a smooth steady wind profile.

This paper presents VARnet, a capable signal-processing model for rapid astronomical time series analysis. VARnet leverages wavelet decomposition, a novel method of Fourier feature extraction via the finite-embedding Fourier transform, and deep learning to detect faint signals in light curves, utilizing the strengths of modern GPUs to achieve submillisecond single-source run time. We apply VARnet to the Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) single-exposure database, which holds nearly 200 billion apparitions over 10.5 yr of infrared sources on the entire sky. This paper devises a pipeline in order to extract variable candidates from the NEOWISE data, serving as a proof of concept for both the efficacy of VARnet and methods for an upcoming variability survey over the entirety of the NEOWISE data set. We implement models and simulations to synthesize unique light curves to train VARnet. In this case, the model achieves an F1 score of 0.91 over a four-class classification scheme on a validation set of real variable sources present in the infrared. In this work, model-predictive control (MPC) was combined for the first time with singular perturbation theory, and an original plasma kinetic control method based on extremely simple data-driven models and a two-time-scale MPC algorithm has been developed. A comprehensive review is presented in this paper. Slow and fast semi-empirical models are identified from data, by considering the fast kinetic plasma dynamics as a singular perturbation of a quasi-static equilibrium, which itself is governed, on the slow time scale, by the flux diffusion equation. This control technique takes advantage of the large ratio between the time scales involved in magnetic and kinetic plasma transport. It is applied here to the simultaneous control of the safety factor profile, q (𝑥), and of several kinetic variables, such as the poloidal beta parameter, β _p , and the internal inductance parameter, l _i , on the EAST tokamak. In the experiments, the available control actuators were lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) and co-current neutral beam injection (NBI) from different sources. Ion cyclotron resonant heating (ICRH) and electron cyclotron resonant heating (ECRH) are used as additional actuators in control simulations. In the controller design, an observer provides, in real time, an estimate of the system states and of the mismatch between measured and predicted outputs, which ensures robustness to model errors and offset-free control. Based on the observer information, the controller predicts the behavior of the system over a given time horizon and computes the optimal actuation by solving a quadratic programming optimization problem that takes the actuator constraints into account. A number of control applications are described in the paper, either in nonlinear simulations with EAST-like parameters or in real experiments on EAST. The simulations were performed with a fast plasma simulator (METIS) using either two control actuators (LHCD and ICRH) in a low density scenario, or up to four actuators at higher density: LHCD, ECRH, and two NBI systems driven in a on/off pulse-width-modulation (PWM) mode, with different injection angles. The control models are identified with the prediction-error method, using datasets obtained from open loop simulations in which the actuators are modulated with pseudo-random binary sequences. The simulations with two actuators show that various q (𝑥) profiles and β _p waveforms can be tracked without offset, within times that are consistent with the resistive and thermal diffusion time scales, respectively. In simulations with four actuators, simultaneous tracking of time-dependent targets is shown for q (𝑥) at two normalized radii, 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = 0.4, and for β _p . Due to the inherent mismatch between the optimal NBI power request and the delivered PWM power, the kinetic controller performs with reduced accuracy compared with simulations that do not use the NBI/PWM actuators. The first experimental tests using this new control algorithm were performed on EAST when the only available actuator was the LHCD system at 4.6 GHz. The algorithm was thus used in its simplest single-input-single-output version to track time-dependent targets for the central safety factor, q _0 , or for β _p . In the closed loop control experiments, the q _0 targets were tracked in about one second, consistently with the plasma resistive time constant. Excellent tracking of a piecewise linear β _p target waveform was also achieved. When the NBI system became controllable in real time by the EAST plasma control system, new experiments were dedicated to multiple-input-multiple-output MPC control with three actuators: LHCD and two NBI actuators using the PWM algorithm. Given that the minimum time allowed between NBI on/off switching was 0.1 s, i.e. larger than the characteristic time of the fast plasma dynamics, a reduced version of the MPC controller based only on the slow model was used. Various controller configurations were tested during a single experimental session, with up to three controlled variables chosen among q _0 = q ( 𝑥 = 0), q _1 = q ( 𝑥 = 0.5), β _p and l _i . The main difficulty encountered during this session was the unavailability of the full baseline ICRH and ECRH powers that were used in the reference scenario, and from which the plasma model was identified. This often led to the saturation of one or several actuators, which prevented some targets selected in advance from being accessible. Nevertheless, in cases that were free from actuator saturation, q _0 and q _1 targets were successfully reached, in a time that is consistent with the resistive diffusion time of the model and with small oscillations that are characteristic of the PWM operation of the neutral beams. During the simultaneous control of q _0 and β _p , the ICRH power was too low and, in addition, the plasma density was much larger than the reference one. The q _0 targets were not accessible in this high-density/low-power case, but β _p control was successful. Finally, the simultaneous control of q _0 and l _i was satisfactory and, during the simultaneous control of, q _0 , β _p and l _i , the tracking of β _p and l _i was satisfactory but q _0 was too large due to the lack of ICRH power and to NBI saturation. In conclusion, the extensive nonlinear simulations described in this paper have demonstrated the relevance of combining MPC, data-driven models and singular perturbation methods for plasma kinetic control. This technique was also assessed experimentally on EAST, although some tests were perturbed by undesired parameter changes with respect to the reference scenario.

Typical solar wind electrons are modeled as being composed of a dense but less energetic thermal “core” population plus a tenuous but energetic “halo” population with varying degrees of temperature anisotropies for both species. In this paper, we seek a fundamental explanation of how these solar wind core and halo electron temperature anisotropies are regulated by combined effects of collisions and instability excitations. The observed solar wind core/halo electron data in ( β _∥ , T _⊥ / T _∥ ) phase space show that their respective occurrence distributions are confined within an area enclosed by outer boundaries. Here, T _⊥ / T _∥ is the ratio of perpendicular and parallel temperatures and β _∥ is the ratio of parallel thermal energy to background magnetic field energy. While it is known that the boundary on the high- β _∥ side is constrained by the temperature anisotropy-driven plasma instability threshold conditions, the low- β _∥ boundary remains largely unexplained. The present paper provides a baseline explanation for the low- β _∥ boundary based upon the collisional relaxation process. By combining the instability and collisional dynamics it is shown that the observed distribution of the solar wind electrons in the ( β _∥ , T _⊥ / T _∥ ) phase space is adequately explained, both for the “core” and “halo” components.

The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) for JWST is supplied with a suite of imaging band-pass filters optimized for full spectral coverage in eight intermediate-width bands from 5 to 26 μ m and a narrower one at 11.3 μ m. This contrasts with previous infrared space telescopes, which generally have provided only two broad bands, one near 10 μ m and the other near 20 μ m. The expanded MIRI spectral capability provides new possibilities for detailed interpretation of survey results. This is an important feature of the instrument, on top of its great increase in sensitivity and angular resolution over any previous mission. The Systematic Mid-infrared Instrument Legacy Extragalactic Survey (SMILES) was designed to take full advantage of this capability. This paper briefly describes the history of infrared surveys that paved the way for MIRI on JWST and for our approach to designing SMILES. It illustrates the use of the observations for a broad range of science programs and concludes with a brief summary of the need for additional full multiband surveys with JWST/MIRI. This paper is an overall introduction to the survey and is accompanied by a full data release, described in detail by S. Alberts et al.

Focusing on the impact of hot plasma effects on electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD), this paper presents the numerical results of top launch ECCD (TL-ECCD) and outside midplane or equatorial-plane launch ECCD (EL-ECCD) in the HL-3-like tokamak plasmas. For EL-ECCD, there is little difference in the calculated results under the cold and hot plasma propagation models, and the results are not affected by the dominant current drive mechanism of EC waves. In the cases of TL-ECCD, the large initial parallel refraction makes the influence of hot plasma effects on ECCD become significant. In the range of toroidal magnetic fields B _T discussed in this paper, the difference between the calculated results under the two propagation models rapidly decreases as the value of B _T decreases, and the difference between the two is already very small in the range of 1.8 T ⩽ B _T ⩽ 2.0 T. Therefore, the influence of hot plasma effects can also be neglected for TL-ECCD, and the cold plasma propagation model can be directly adopted. For the HL-3-like tokamak equipped with a dual-frequency EC wave system at 140 GHz and 105 GHz, if the addition of a TL-ECCD is considered in the existing outside midplane and upper launch manners, through appropriate combination of 140 GHz TL-ECCD and dual-frequency outside EL-ECCD, the ECCD can be used in a larger B _T window (1.8 T ⩽ B _T ⩽ 2.25 T) and a wider radial range (0.1 ⩽ ρ ⩽ 0.8–0.9) to generate current efficiently. The normalized current drive efficiency of the TL-ECCD is nonlinear with the injected EC power, it reaches the maximum at the injected power of 6–8 MW. This is of significance for the stable operation of HL-3-like tokamak with high plasma current above 1 MA.

Indigenous water knowledge recognizes water as living, and that the relationship between people and water is one of reciprocity. Yet, Indigenous Peoples continue to struggle for water justice due to centuries long and ongoing colonial legacies that have intergenerational effects on self-determination, culture, and wellbeing. Using a narrative review, this paper explores how published research has used art and arts-based approaches to explore dimensions of water injustice, wellbeing and mental health with Indigenous communities living in the Arctic and Amazon regions. Within the three central themes of the review (wellbeing, water justice, and arts-based research approaches), the most discussed emergent themes were: relationship to place, kinship, the lived experience of water, ongoing changes to water, and storytelling and art as instruments of resistance and to make visible what is not visible. The paper discusses those themes from the literature, and possible areas of future research. The findings underscore the importance of including diverse voices, worldviews and knowledges in water governance, and the potential for arts-based approaches to facilitate intercultural and intergenerational efforts to address water injustice and advance Indigenous Peoples’ rights to self-determination.

Exposure of concrete to various acids can hardly be overstated due to the widespread use of concrete in the construction industry. The effect of selected factors on the degradation of ordinary Portland cement (OPC 53 grade) paste and mortar exposed to acetic acid is investigated in this paper. Various test parameters such as mass loss, loss in cross-sectional area, relative dynamic elastic modulus (RDEM), loss in flexural and compressive strength are used to assess the selected factors and the results obtained are analysed to determine the most favourable test conditions for degradation, that can be adopted for developing an accelerated test method. The factors used for the investigation are replenishment of acid solution, concentration of acid solution, ratio of surface area of specimen to volume of liquid acid solution (S/L), shape of the specimen and nature of the specimen. This paper also investigates the interrelationships among test parameters and adopts interpretation of acid consumption to assess the aggressiveness of the acid solution. It was found that renewing conditions and high concentrations of acid solution (0.5 M) indicate rapid degradation. The aggressiveness of 0.125 M acetic acid solutions in renewing conditions is about 5 times that of non-renewing conditions respectively. The rate of degradation is inversely related to S/L ratio. Cylindrical specimens have a marginal increase in degradation than prismatic specimens. It is preferable to evaluate acid attack on mortar specimens rather than paste specimens due to higher loss in cross-sectional area and relative dynamic elastic modulus (RDEM).

To explore the optimal carbon emissions reduction path for the logistics industry in Hebei Province, China, this paper considers internal factors such as logistics agglomeration, transportation structure, and technology innovation as regulatory measures. The system dynamics method is employed to simulate the effects of carbon emissions reduction for each factor. Then, based on examining the interactive relationships among these internal factors, the paper proposes the optimal carbon emissions reduction path for Hebei Province’s logistics industry under different sequences of implementing the three measures. The results indicate that logistics agglomeration, transportation structure, and technological innovation can contribute to varying degrees of carbon emissions reduction in logistics. By 2030, it is projected that logistics agglomeration will result in a reduction of 21,799 million tons of carbon emissions while transportation structure and technology innovation will lead to reductions of 23,459 million tons and 20,778 million tons respectively compared to the BAU scenario. Furthermore, intricate interactions exist among these three internal measures. The optimal path for reducing carbon emissions is TSI-AGD-LTI. Specifically, to optimize the transportation structure first, relieve the pressure of logistics carbon emissions aggravated by logistics agglomeration, promote the cross-regional transfer of logistics carbon emissions, and then improve the level of technology innovation to strengthen further the logistics carbon emissions reduction effect of transportation structure adjustment.

As decarbonisation agendas mature, macro-energy systems modelling studies have increasingly focused on enhanced decision support methods that move beyond least-cost modelling to improve consideration of additional objectives and tradeoffs. One candidate is modelling to generate alternatives (MGA), which systematically explores new objectives without explicit stakeholder elicitation. This paper provides comparative testing of four existing MGA methodologies and proposes a new Combination vector selection approach. We examine each existing method’s runtime, parallelizability, new solution discovery efficiency, and spatial exploration in lower dimensional ( N ⩽ 100) spaces, as well as spatial exploration for all methods in a three-zone, 8760 h capacity expansion model case. To measure convex hull volume expansion, this paper formalizes a computationally tractable high-dimensional volume estimation algorithm. We find random vector provides the broadest exploration of the near-optimal feasible region and variable Min/Max provides the most extreme results, while the two tie on computational speed. The new Combination method provides an advantageous mix of the two. Additional analysis is provided on MGA variable selection, in which we demonstrate MGA problems formulated over generation variables fail to retain cost-optimal dispatch and are thus not reflective of real operations of equivalent hypothetical capacity choices. As such, we recommend future studies utilize a parallelized combined vector approach over the set of capacity variables for best results in computational speed and spatial exploration while retaining optimal dispatch.

This review describes the progress of research on gallium oxide as a material for power devices, covering the development of bulk crystal growth through to epitaxial growth, defect evaluations, device processes, and development, all based on the author’s research experiences. During the last decade or so, the epi-wafer size has been expanded to 4–6 inches, and Schottky barrier diodes and field-effect transistors capable of ampere-class operations and with breakdown voltages of several kV have been demonstrated. On the other hand, challenges to the practical application of gallium oxide power devices, such as the cost of epi-wafers, killer defects, purity of epitaxial layer, etc., have also become apparent. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the history of these developments, including not only papers but also patents and conference presentations, and gives my personal views on the prospects for this material’s continued development.

Deriving high-quality light curves for asteroids and other periodic sources from survey data is challenging owing to many factors, including the sparsely sampled observational record and diurnal aliasing, which is a signature imparted into the periodic signal of a source that is a function of the observing schedule of ground-based telescopes. In this paper we examine the utility of combining asteroid observational records from the Zwicky Transient Facility and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, which are the ground- and space-based facilities, respectively, to determine to what degree the data from the space-based facility can suppress diurnal aliases. Furthermore, we examine several optimizations that are used to derive the rotation periods of asteroids, which we then compare to the reported rotation periods in the literature. Through this analysis we find that we can reliably derive the rotation periods for ∼85% of our sample of 222 objects that are also reported in the literature and that the remaining ∼15% are difficult to reliably derive, as many are asteroids that are insufficiently elongated, which produces a light curve with an insufficient amplitude and, consequently, an incorrect rotation period. We also investigate a binary classification method that biases against reporting incorrect rotation periods. We conclude the paper by assessing the utility of using other ground- or space-based facilities as companion telescopes to the forthcoming Rubin Observatory.

The paper deals with the qualification of the main safety system of the nuclear fusion reactor ITER: the Vacuum Vessel Pressure Suppression System. This safety system manages the Loss of Coolant Accident, that could occur in the Vacuum Vessel, avoiding a significant increase of the internal pressure that could breach the primary confinement barrier. Steam condensation occurs at sub-atmospheric pressure. This condition is original respect the usual applications of steam direct condensation in nuclear fission reactors. An extensive experimental research program, funded by ITER Organization, on reduced scale experimental rigs (scale 1/22 and 1/10) have been carried out at the University of Pisa. Unstable condensation regimes occurred during some tests at about 500 g s ^−1 of steam mass flow rate (10% of the maximum steam mass flow rate foreseen for the relevant accidental scenarios). In these conditions, high intensity vibrations of the whole experimental rig occurred. These events can be classified as ‘Chugging’ or Condensation Induced Water Hammer. The performed tests have been analysed elaborating the images of the video-cameras located in the pool and comparing the steam jet shape with the acceleration values recorded by an accelerometer mounted on the sparger structure. These elaborations permitted to evaluate the dynamic of bubble collapse, the volume of the developed external bubbles, the collapse frequency as function of thermal-hydraulic parameters. Moreover, the paper emphasizes the beneficial effects of non-condensable gases (NCGs) on the unstable condensation regimes. In fact, the NCG inhibits the occurrences of Water Hammer inside the sparger and eliminates the thermal stratification inside the water pool increasing the turbulence.

Extreme weather events and weather anomalies are on the rise, creating unprecedented struggles for the electrical power grid. With the aging of the United States power grid, the status quo for maintaining the transmission and distribution system, demand, generation, and operations will no longer suffice under the current and future conditions. Such conditions will require a shift in thinking and operating the power grid toward a weather-driven power system. This paper conducts a comprehensive review of each component of the power grid regarding the current leading weather events related to major power outages in the United States. For each event, contemporary issues and possible adaptations are presented, following a parallel comparison of the power grid development and knowledge of global climate modeling. Further, a background in global climate modeling is provided through the lens of an energy professional to aid in emission scenarios used in future studies. Overall, this paper works toward bridging the gap between weather and climate-related studies and operating the power grid in an uncertain climatic landscape while offering possible adaptations and solutions at a short-term and long-term scale.

The ocean is the largest reservoir of renewable energy on earth, in which wave energy occupies an important position due to its high energy density and extensive distribution. As a cutting-edge technology, wave-driven triboelectric nanogenerators (W-TENGs) demonstrate substantial potential for ocean energy conversion and utilization. This paper provides a comprehensive review of W-TENGs, from materials manufacturing and structural fabrications to marine applications. It highlights the versatility in materials selection for W-TENGs and the potential for unique treatments to enhance output performance. With the development of materials science, researchers can manufacture materials with various properties as needed. The structural design and fabrication of W-TENGs is the pillar of converting wave energy to electrical energy. The flexible combination of TENG’s multiple working modes and advanced manufacturing methods make W-TENGs’ structures rich and diverse. Advanced technologies, such as three-dimensional printing, make manufacturing and upgrading W-TENGs more convenient and efficient. This paper summarizes their structures and elucidates their features and manufacturing processes. It should be noted that all efforts made in materials and structures are aimed at W-TENGs, having a bright application prospect. The latest studies on W-TENGs for effective application in the marine field are reviewed, and their feasibility and practical value are evaluated. Finally, based on a systematic review, the existing challenges at this stage are pointed out. More importantly, strategies to address these challenges and directions for future research efforts are also discussed. This review aims to clarify the recent advances in standardization and scale-up of W-TENGs to promote richer innovation and practice in the future.

Additive manufacturing in the realm of 3D printing has transformed the manufacturing sector, providing unmatched freedom in design and rapid prototyping abilities. However, a significant obstacle hindering its broader acceptance is the susceptibility to errors. These errors can take diverse forms, including layer shifting, under extrusion, and surface imperfections, ultimately resulting in unsuccessful prints or parts with weakened mechanical characteristics. Advanced error detection and correction methods are crucial for ensuring reliability and enhancing productivity. This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art in error detection techniques using various sensors in 3D printing, summarizing vision-based and fluctuation-based approaches for data collection and the use of a model-based approach for data interpretation. It further describes these techniques enable correction in 3D printing through sensor calibration, predictive modeling, specialized tools, and equipment specific techniques. The paper concludes by proposing a novel approach of combining advanced error detection and correction techniques into a comprehensive end-to-end error detection and correction methodology as a foundational building block for significantly improving the efficiency and yield in additive manufacturing processes.

The analysis of hydrogen isotope content is crucial for understanding the operation of fusion devices. Hydrogen isotopic analysis in the core and plasma edge is conducted through neutron and spectroscopic diagnostics. In the case of exhaust gas, mass spectrometry is employed using residual gas analyzers (RGAs), along with optical gas analysis (OGA) utilizing an optical Penning gauge. The use of traditional quadrupole mass spectrometers for RGA encounters challenges during discharges with tritium gas due to signal overlap of different hydrogen molecules at the same mass number. This paper introduces a novel technique to address this issue through a cross-related analysis of RGA data with OGA results. Another consideration in mass spectrometry analysis is the instrument’s varying sensitivity concerning the gas mass number. The paper includes gas calibration data results for all the quadrupoles used in the JET gas analysis. Hydrogen isotopic ratios are calculated from RGA detected currents using simple formulas. The results of this procedure are presented for selected DT JET discharges in relation to the JET pulse time, and they are compared with corresponding optical data. Time-averaged hydrogen isotopic ratio values are computed for numerous discharges during the DT and T campaigns.

We present a pipeline to identify photometric variability within strong gravitationally lensing candidates, in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Surveys. In our first paper, we laid out our pipeline and presented seven new gravitationally lensed supernovae candidates in a retrospective search. In this companion paper, we apply a modified version of that pipeline to search for gravitationally lensed quasars. From a sample of 5807 strong lenses, we have identified 13 new gravitationally lensed quasar candidates (three of them quadruply lensed). We note that our methodology differs from most lensed quasar search algorithms that solely rely on the morphology, location, and color of the candidate systems. By also accounting for the temporal photometric variability of the posited lensed images in our search via difference imaging, we have discovered new lensed quasar candidates. While variability searches using difference imaging algorithms have been done in the past, they are typically performed over vast swathes of the sky, whereas we specifically target strong gravitationally lensed candidates. We also have applied our pipeline to 655 known gravitationally lensed quasar candidates from past lensed quasar searches, of which we identified 13 that display significant variability (one of them quadruply lensed). This pipeline demonstrates a promising search strategy to discover gravitationally lensed quasars in other existing and upcoming surveys.

In 2014–15, Pakistan’s provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) launched a decentralised power generation initiative, installing over 356 small hydro power units to provide electricity to over 2.5 million people in its mountainous regions. This initiative built on the foundation of prior community-based mini/micro hydro-power projects (MHPPs) deployed in the region since the 1980s that have experienced mixed success; by 2020, over 150 units were non-operational. This paper investigates the socio-technical factors influencing the success and failure of these projects, focusing on outcomes and processes integral to community MHPPs. The study analyses the critical implications of MHPPs for socio-economic welfare, gender equity and democratic governance through extensive primary research including field observations at 40 sites, questionnaire surveys with community residents in three in-depth case-studies, and expert interviews with local policymakers and project developers. Analysis shows that electricity provision from MHPPs has had positive outcomes for the communities in terms of improved education, poverty alleviation and economic growth, alongside enhanced access to information and gains in women’s entrepreneurship and health. Nonetheless, the study also identifies significant shortcomings in the processes involved in community MHPPs related to inadequate technical assessments, monitoring, and evaluation, as well as challenges arising from undemocratic governance mechanisms and inequitable participation. By teasing out the multiple socio-technical dimensions that shape infrastructure resilience of MHPPs in KPK, this paper contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable community energy projects and informs policy for decentralised energy transitions that ensure democratic alignment and inclusive design.

The neutronics performance of a tokamak has been identified as an important factor in designing a fusion power plant. The design of the tokamak should not only meet operational parameters such as sufficient tritium breeding, but also safety parameters such as low structural material activation. This paper investigates the impacts of the neutronics metrics for the ARC-class tokamak, a compact tokamak with an immersion blanket, by perturbing the first five layers of structural material—first wall, inner vacuum vessel, coolant salt channel, neutron multiplier, and outer vacuum vessel. The goal of this work is to provide insight into shaping and scaling the flux on each layer to obtain optimized operational and safety metrics through quantification of the responses from each perturbation. Results show that increased first wall thickness can increase the tritium breeding ratio (TBR) in specific configurations with high ^6 Li enrichments and that vacuum vessels decrease TBR for low- ^6 Li enrichment configurations. It was also found that the neutron multiplier can either increase or decrease TBR depending on the configuration. The response of metrics to the change in layer thickness and enrichment also varies depending on the vacuum vessel material. The integral impacts of ^6 Li enrichment, layer thicknesses, and vacuum vessel material choice are investigated and presented in this paper.

ITER is of key importance in the European fusion roadmap as it aims to prove the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion as a future energy source. The EUROfusion consortium of labs within Europe is contributing to the preparation of ITER scientific exploitation and operation and aspires to exploit ITER outcomes in view of DEMO. The paper provides an overview of the major progress obtained recently, carried out in the frame of the new (initiated in 2021) EUROfusion work-package called ‘ Pr eparation of I TER O peration’ (PrIO). The overview paper is directly supported by the eleven EUROfusion PrIO contributions given at the 29th Fusion Energy Conference (16–21 October 2023) London, UK [ https://www.iaea.org/events/fec2023 ]. The paper covers the following topics: (i) development and validation of tools in support to ITER operation (plasma breakdown/burn-through with evolving plasma volume, new infra-red synthetic diagnostic for off-line analysis and wall monitoring using Artificial Intelligence techniques, synthetic diagnostics development, development and exploitation of multi-machine databases); (ii) R&D for the radio-frequency ITER neutral beam sources leading to long duration of negative deuterium/hydrogen ions current extraction at ELISE and participation in the neutral beam test facility with progress on the ITER source SPIDER, and, the commissioning of the 1 MV high voltage accelerator (MITICA) with lessons learned for ITER; (iii) validation of neutronic tools for ITER nuclear operation following the second JET deuterium–tritium experimental campaigns carried out in 2021 and in 2023 (neutron streaming and shutdown dose rate calculation, water activation and activated corrosion products with advanced fluid dynamic simulation; irradiation of several materials under 14.1 MeV neutron flux etc).

The first experimental campaigns of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) have shown that turbulence plays a decisive role in the performance of neoclassically optimized stellarators. This stresses the importance of understanding microturbulence from the theoretical and experimental points of view. To this end, this paper addresses a comprehensive characterization of the turbulent fluctuations by means of nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations performed with the code stella in two W7-X scenarios. In the first part of the paper, the amplitude of the density fluctuations is calculated and compared with measurements obtained by Doppler reflectometry (DR) in the OP1 experimental campaigns. It is found that the trend of the fluctuations along the radius is explained by the access of the DR system to different regions of the turbulence wavenumber spectrum. In the second part of the article, frequency spectra of the density fluctuations and the zonal component of the turbulent flow are numerically characterized for comparisons against future experimental analyses. Both quantities feature broad frequency spectra with dominant frequencies of O(1)–O(10) kHz.

Integrated modeling of plasma-surface interactions provides a comprehensive and self-consistent description of the system, moving the field closer to developing predictive and design capabilities for plasma facing components. One such workflow, including descriptions for the scrape-off-layer plasma, ion-surface interactions and the sub-surface evolution, was previously used to address steady-state scenarios and has recently been extended to incorporate time-dependence and two-way information flow. The new model can address dynamic recycling in transient scenarios, such as the application presented in this paper: the evolution of W samples pre-damaged by helium and exposed to ELMy H-mode plasmas in the DIII-D DiMES. A first set of simulations explored the effect of ELM frequency. This study was discussed in detail in this conference’s proceedings and is summarized here. The 2nd set of simulations, which is the focus of this paper, explores the effect of code-coupling frequency. These simulations include initial SOLPS solutions converged to the inter-ELM state, ion impact energy ( E _in ) and angles ( A _in ) calculated by hPIC2, and an improved heat transfer description in Xolotl. The model predicts increases in particle fluxes and decreases in heat fluxes by 10%–20% with the coupling time-step. Compared with the first set of simulations, the less shallow impact angle leads to smaller reflection rates and significant D implantation. The higher fraction of implanted flux (and deeper), in particular during ELMs, increases the accumulated D content in the W near-surface region. Future expansion of the workflow includes coupling to hPIC2 and GITR to ensure accurate descriptions of E _in and A _in , and W impurity transport.
