Reports related to incidences of drug facilitated crimes (DFCs) have notably increased in recently. In such cases, victims report being assaulted or robbed while under the influence of drugs. Lorazepam (LZ) is frequently used in DFCs as it can easily make victims docile owing to its potent numbing effect. Therefore, a straightforward and green analytical method to analyze LZ in spiked food matrices in connection with criminal acts becomes important. The current study reports a simple, green, and high sample throughput analytical method for determining LZ in food and drink matrices commonly encountered in DFCs, based on recently introduced cellulose paper sorptive extraction (CPSE). For the extraction of LZ from food matrices, pristine cellulose paper (CP, commonly used laboratory filter paper) was used as a sorptive medium. Five pieces of CP (1.5″ × 1.5″ each) were dipped into diluted food matrices (cream biscuits and tea) and stirred on a rotary shaker for 30 min at 200 rpm. The CPs were then dried, and the adsorbed LZ was back-extracted into 2 mL of methanol. The extract was then subjected to GC–MS analysis in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. Several parameters, including CP size and number, back-extraction solvent type and volume, sample volume, extraction time and stirring speed, pH, ionic strength, elution time and speed, were thoroughly screened and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the method was found to be linear in the range of 0.2–10 µg·mL−1 (or µg·g−1) with a coefficient of determination (R2) ranging from 0.996–0.998. The limit of detection and limit of quantification for cream biscuits were 0.054 and 0.18 µg·g−1 whereas they were 0.05 and 0.16 µg·mL−1 for tea samples. For all measurements, the relative standard deviations (%RSD) were always below 10%. Two mL of methanol per sample was used during the entire sample preparation process. The greenness of the proposed procedure was evaluated using Analytical Eco-Scale and GAPI greenness assessment tools. Finally, the CPSE–GC–MS method has been applied for the determination of LZ in forensic food samples which were used in DFCs.

Rapid degradation of pulping and papermaking wastewater in a pulp and paper mill is crucial for recycling purposes yet challenging to achieve. The purpose of this research is to provide a technical guide for the ozone degradation treatment process of pulp and paper mill wastewater and to explore the reaction mechanism of dissolved and colloidal substances (DCSs). This study is vital for effectively treating pulp and paper mill wastewater through ozonation. In the catalytic ozonation process to treat pulp and paper mill wastewater, a polyurethane sponge loaded with titanium dioxide was used as a catalyst. The optimal process conditions were determined to be 8 min of treatment time, a 16 mg/L ozone concentration, pH 9, and a 7.5% catalyst filling ratio. The COD reduction under these conditions is approximately 52%. The catalytic ozonation system, according to the FI-IR and GC-MS analyses, could degrade the large-molecule volatile organic compounds in the raw wastewater into small-molecule substances. Furthermore, the relative content of common DCSs in paper wastewater, such as palmitic acid and stilbene, could be reduced. The catalytic ozonation system is more effective for treating refractory organic compounds and has a higher COD reduction than the ozonation system.

Oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids exert several beneficial effects on human health, some of which are also certified by recent European and U.S. regulations. The goal of the presented work was to develop an innovative methodology to evaluate their content in edible vegetable oils, in order to increase the value of oils from a nutraceutical perspective. The protocol is based on the use of paper spray ionization coupled with tandem mass spectrometry experiments, which allowed the recording of data very quickly and with high specificity. All investigated compounds gained a good linear relation (r2 higher than 0.98). Accuracy values are near 100% for all concentration levels examined, and the repeatability and reproducibility data result lower than 15%, highlighting the consistence of the methodology. The developed approach was successfully applied for the analysis of different real samples, and its robustness was confirmed by comparing the results obtained with those coming from the classical and official methodology.

Herein, we loaded cobalt-based zeolite imidazolate frameworks, ZIF-67 (Co), onto commercial filter paper to prepare catalytic filter paper (ZFP) for the in situ degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in water by activating peroxymonosulfate. The results showed that ZIF-67 (Co) was densely and uniformly distributed on the surface of the filter paper. The prepared ZFP could effectively degrade BPA in situ through a gravity-driven filtration process. Specifically, when the flow rate of the BPA solution passing through ZFP was lower than 10 mL/min, 0.02 mM of BPA could be completely degraded by ZFP. Furthermore, ZFP showed promising water matrix adaptability, which could provide promising BPA degradation efficiency in a wide pH range or in the existence of multiple anions. The scavenging tests demonstrated that both sulfate radical and hydroxyl radical were generated for BPA degradation, in which hydroxyl radical was the dominant active species. The ZFP also exhibited promising long-time use stability with a high mineralization rate. This study provides a novel method to prepare high-efficient catalyst paper for the in situ organic pollutant removal in water media via a prompt filtration process.

This paper describes smart sampling paper to be used for bottom-up protein analysis. Four different manners to immobilize trypsin on cellulose were evaluated. Untreated paper, potassium-periodate-functionalized paper (with and without post-immobilization reduction) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)/2-vinyl-4,4-dimethylazlactone (VDM)-functionalized paper were all used to immobilize trypsin. For the evaluation, Coomassie Brilliant Blue staining of proteins on paper and the BAEE trypsin activity assay needed to be modified. These methods allowed, together with data from mass spectrometric analysis of cytochrome C digestions, us to acquire fundamental insight into protein binding, and trypsin action and activity on paper. All functionalized discs bind more protein than the untreated discs. Protein binding to functionalized discs is based on both adsorption and covalent binding. Trypsin immobilized on potassium-periodate-functionalized discs exhibits the highest trypsin activity when using cytochrome C as substrate. It is proven that it is trypsin attached to paper (and not desorbed trypsin) which is responsible for the enzyme activity. The use of discs on complex biological samples shows that all functionalized discs are able to digest diluted serum; for the best-performing disc, HEMA-VDM functionalized, up to 200 high-confidence proteins are qualified, showing its potential.

Agro-waste management processes are evolving through the development of novel experimental approaches to understand the mechanisms in reducing their pollution levels efficiently and economically from industrial effluents. Agro-industrial effluent (AIE) from biorefineries that contain high concentrations of COD and color are discharged into the ecosystem. Thus, the AIE from these biorefineries requires treatment prior to discharge. Therefore, the effectiveness of a continuous flow bioreactor system (CFBS) in the treatment of AIE using hybrid waste sludge biochar (HWSB) was investigated. The use of a bioreactor with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1–3 days and AIE concentrations of 10–50% was used in experiments based on a statistical design. AIE concentration and HRT were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) as the process variables. The performance of CFBS was analyzed in terms of COD and color removal. Findings indicated 76.52% and 66.97% reduction in COD and color, respectively. During biokinetic studies, the modified Stover models were found to be perfectly suited for the observed measurements with R2 values 0.9741 attained for COD. Maximum contaminants elimination was attained at 30% AIE and 2-day HRT. Thus, this study proves that the HWSB made from biomass waste can potentially help preserve nonrenewable resources and promote zero-waste attainment and principles of circular economy.

The paper presents the possibility of using carbon dioxide as a carrier gas in capillary gas chromatography (with a stationary liquid phase) to analyze semi-volatile compounds (boiling points of up to 400 °C). Based on the experiments carried out for compounds from the group of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the maximum volumetric flow rate (2.4 mL/min for CO2) was determined, enabling the correct separation of the tested standard mixtures (except for two compounds from the OCP group: 4,4′-DDD and Endrin aldehyde and two other pairs of compounds with Rs slightly less than 1.5). Compared to using helium as a carrier gas (and makeup), carbon dioxide produces wider (about 1.6 times) and lower (about 1.8 times) peaks of analytes; these values can vary depending on the separation efficiency of the column. Carbon dioxide can also be effectively used as a makeup gas for the FID detector. The signal increase is comparable to that obtained with helium used as makeup (on average 40–50% depending on the carrier gas). When high sensitivity and high resolution are not required, CO2 can be an alternative carrier and makeup gas to helium under the same flow conditions. The paper also describes practical aspects related to the implementation of CO2 as a carrier and makeup gas in GC.

Green analytical chemistry principles aim to minimize the negative impact of analytical procedures in the environment, which can be considered both at close (to ensure the safety of the analysts) and global (to conserve our natural resources) levels. These principles suggest, among other guidelines, the reduction/minimization of the sample treatment and the use of renewable sources when possible. The first aspect is largely fulfilled by microextraction, which is considered to be among the greenest sample treatment techniques. The second consideration is attainable if natural products are used as raw materials for the preparation of new extraction phases. This strategy is in line with the change in our production system, which is being gradually moved from a linear model (take−make−dispose) to a circular one (including reusing and recycling as key terms). This article reviews the potential of natural products as sorbents in extraction and microextraction techniques from the synergic perspectives of two research groups working on the topic. The article covers the use of unmodified natural materials and the modified ones (although the latter has a less green character) to draw a general picture of the usefulness of the materials.

This paper presents the development of an environmentally friendly, small molecular depressant citrus pectin for improving the recovery of cassiterite resources. Citrus pectin extracted from citrus peel was utilized as the depressant, and it demonstrated significant potential in separating calcite from cassiterite in micro-flotation tests. The molecular weight of the citrus pectin extracted in this paper decreased from 11,485,412 Da to 32,959 Da compared to commercial pectin, resulting in the depressant efficiency of the reagent. The results of a zeta potential and adsorption test indicated that citrus pectin had less and weaker adsorption on the cassiterite surface and could be replaced with NaOL. The chemical adsorption process of citrus pectin on the surface of calcite was determined through FTIR spectroscopy analysis. XPS analysis results indicated that the interaction between the carboxyl groups of citrus pectin and calcium atoms enables adsorption to occur. The AFM revealed that citrus pectin displayed a uniform and dense pattern of point-like adsorption on the surface of calcite. Micro-flotation experiments showed that cassiterite recovery of 80% can be obtained at a citrus pectin dosage of 10 mg/L. Citrus pectin has the advantages of being low-cost, highly selective, and environmentally suitable, making it a promising alternative to conventional reagents.

This research paper investigates the phytochemical profile, antioxidant activity, antidiabetic potential, and antibacterial activity of Myrtus communis berries. Two extraction methods were employed to obtain the extracts: solid–liquid ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The extracts were characterized using spectrophotometric methods and Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC). The UAE extract exhibited higher total flavonoid and anthocyanin content, while the SFE extract prevailed in total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in the DPPH radical screening assay. RP-HPLC characterization identified and quantified several polyphenolic compounds. In the UAE extract, epigallocatechin was found in a concentration of 2656.24 ± 28.15 µg/g dry weight (DW). In the SFE extract, cafestol was the identified compound with the highest content at a level of 29.65 ± 0.03 µg/g DW. Both extracts contained several anthocyanin compounds, including cyanidin 3-O-glucoside chloride, cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside chloride, malvidin-3-O-glucoside chloride, pelargonidin 3-O-glucoside chloride, peonidin 3-O-glucoside chloride, and peonidin-3-O-rutinoside chloride. The antidiabetic potential was evaluated in vitro by measuring the inhibition of α-amylase from porcine pancreas (type I-A). The results highlighted the ability of myrtle berry extracts to inhibit α-amylase enzymatic activity, suggesting its potential as an alternative for controlling postprandial hyperglycemia. The UAE extract showed the lowest IC50 value among the two extracts, with an average of 8.37 ± 0.52 µg/mL DW. The antibacterial activity of the extracts was assessed in vitro against Bacillus spp., Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus using the disk diffusion method. Both myrtle berry extracts exhibited similar antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains. The results support further investigation of myrtle berries extracts as a potential ingredient in functional food formulation, particularly due to its antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antibacterial properties.

The hot spot extraction agent N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-3-oxoglutaramide (TODGA) has the advantages of novelty, high efficiency and environmental protection in the separation of rare earths by tandem extraction. In this paper, the characteristic parameters for the separation of dysprosium, erbium, thulium and ytterbium ions in the TOGDA–kerosene/hydrochloric acid system for tandem extraction were calculated. Using a 10% TODGA–kerosene/5 mol·L−1 hydrochloric acid extraction system, the mixture containing Dy3+ 0.258 mol·L−1, Er3+ 0.252 mol·L−1, Tm3+ 0.248 mol·L−1 and Yb3+ 0.242 mol·L−1 can be separated by three separation steps, and four products of Dy3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+ can be obtained. The purity of the four products was 99.80%, 99.20%, 99.70% and 99.70%, and the yields were 99.03%, 98.97%, 97.88% and 96.98%, in order. In this paper, the reasons were analyzed for the differences in the ability of the TODGA system to extract heavy rare earth ions (REEs) in terms of density functionality, complex structure and bond valence model. These will provide more basic data and guidance for the industrial application of TODGA.

With the rapid economic development and the continuous growth in the demand for new energy vehicles and energy storage systems, a significant number of waste lithium-ion batteries are expected to enter the market in the future. Effectively managing the processing and recycling of these batteries to minimize environmental pollution is a major challenge currently facing the lithium-ion battery industry. This paper analyzes and compares the recycling strategies for different components of lithium-ion batteries, providing a summary of the main types of batteries, existing technologies at various pre-treatment stages, and recycling techniques for valuable resources such as heavy metals and graphite. Currently, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy processes have matured; however, their high energy consumption and pollution levels conflict with the principles of the current green economy. As a result, innovative technologies have emerged, aiming to reduce energy consumption while achieving high recovery rates and minimizing the environmental impact. Nevertheless, most of these technologies are currently limited to the laboratory scale and are not yet suitable for large-scale application.

Livestock and poultry farming, as a crucial component of agricultural production, poses a substantial threat to the ecological environment due to the discharge of wastewater. In recent years, researchers have proposed various resource treatment technologies for livestock and poultry breeding wastewater. However, a comprehensive discussion regarding the limitations and avenues for optimizing resource utilization technologies for livestock and poultry farming wastewater treatment is notably absent in existing literature. This paper takes swine wastewater as an illustrative case and undertakes a review of the advantages, disadvantages, and optimization directions of resource treatment technologies, including physical and chemical technology, microbial metabolism, microbial electrochemistry, constructed wetlands, and microalgae-based techniques. Based on mass balance, the recovery rates of various treatment technologies are estimated, and it was found that microbial electrochemistry and constructed wetland techniques may become the mainstream for resource utilization in the future. Furthermore, this paper emphasizes that in addition to resource efficiency, the optimization of resource utilization technologies for swine wastewater should also focus on the following aspects: (1) striking a balance between environmental impact and economic benefits; (2) reducing the cost of resource and energy utilization; and (3) safeguarding environmental and ecological security.

The long-term sustainability of the global water supply, with a paramount emphasis on cleanliness and safety, stands as a formidable challenge in our modern era. In response to this pressing issue, adsorption techniques have emerged as pivotal and widely recognized solutions for the removal of hazardous pollutants, with a particular emphasis on lead adsorption from wastewater. This comprehensive review explores the relentless advancements made in the adsorption domain, highlighting innovations using separation and purification techniques that surpass traditional metal oxide-based adsorbents. Of particular note is the growing exploration of alternative materials, such as starch, chitosan, nanoscale structures like zeolites and metal-organic frameworks, magnetic materials, and carbon-based substances for the development of inorganic adsorbents. These materials, with their remarkable capacity for nanoscale structural adjustment, possess extraordinary capabilities for effective contaminant removal, facilitating swift water purification. The literature survey for this review was conducted using the Google Scholar engine, with “adsorbents for lead remediation” as the starting keywords, resulting in approximately 6000 papers. The search was refined to focus on the last three years and specifically targeted review papers which are most relevant to lead remediation. More than 100 papers were analysed to investigate various techniques, surface modifications, and adsorbent materials for managing inorganic pollutants in water. This review also illuminates research limitations, with a specific focus on starch-based adsorbents in lead remediation. As we progress towards practical commercial applications, this review identifies challenges associated with the development of inorganic adsorbents and provides invaluable insights into future prospects. Surface modification emerges as a promising path, with the potential to substantially enhance adsorption capacity, potentially doubling or even quadrupling it. Moreover, the adsorbents demonstrate impressive regenerative capabilities, maintaining up to 90% regeneration efficiency after multiple cycles. In conclusion, starch-based adsorbents show considerable potential as effective agents for lead purification from aquatic environments. Nevertheless, the need for further research persists, emphasizing the optimization of the adsorption process and exploring the long-term stability of starch-based adsorbents in real-world scenarios.

Heavy metal pollution in rivers and lakes arising due to rapid economic development has been extensively studied by various countries due to its direct impact on ecological health and human well-being. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and systematic reviews addressing the current research status of this subject. In this study, we conducted a visual metrological analysis of the literature from 2001 to 2021 using the Web of Science (WoS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) citation databases. The results show that studies conducted in other countries initially outnumbered those in China; after 2010, China emerged as the foremost contributor. Furthermore, both the WoS and CNKI databases indicate active engagement of Chinese researchers through a significant proportion of published papers on metal research, with prominent contributions coming from institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and University CAS. Nevertheless, Chinese research institutions still have relatively low total paper citation numbers and have yet to establish themselves as key players in international scientific research efforts. Additionally, core authors from different countries share substantial similarities in their research directions and focuses. Consistent research hotspots regarding heavy metals in rivers and lakes were identified across both databases, including heavy metal pollution, adsorption, human activities, water quality, and sediment.

This study explored the antimicrobial potential of Piper betle L. (PBL) and Piper nigrum L. (PNL) extracts against MRSA. Plant parts including stem, leaf, and fruit were extracted using aquadest, methanol, and hexane, resulting in 18 distinct extracts. FT-IR combined with cluster analysis (CA) categorized the extracts, and anti-MRSA activity was assessed through the paper disk diffusion method. The most potent extracts were further analyzed using GC-MS to identify bioactive compounds. Additionally, molecular docking studies were conducted for MRSA protein targets (4DKI, 6H5O, and 4CJN). The hexane extract of PNL and the aqueous extract of PBL fruit showed the strongest inhibitory effects. GC-MS identified piperine (14.22%) and diisooctyl phthalate (14.67%) as major compounds, with piperolein B, piperanine, β-caryophyllene oxide, and α-caryophylladienol as minor compounds in the hexane extract of PNL, while hydroxychavicol (81.89%) and chavibetol (12.01%) were predominant in the aquadest extract of PBL. Molecular docking revealed that piperolein B and piperine had strong binding affinities to MRSA proteins 4DKI, 6H5O, and 4CJN, comparable to ciprofloxacin. In conclusion, this study confirms the potential of PBL and PNL as sources of novel anti-MRSA agents, supporting further research to develop new therapies.

The gas–liquid multiphase process plays a crucial role in the chemical industry, and the utilization of packed beds enhances separation efficiency by increasing the contact area and promoting effective gas–liquid interaction during the separation process. This paper primarily reviews the progress from fundamental research to practical application of gas–liquid multiphase processes in packed bed reactors, focusing on advancements in fluid mechanics (flow patterns, liquid holdup, and pressure drop) and the mechanisms governing gas–liquid interactions within these reactors. Firstly, we present an overview of recent developments in understanding gas–liquid flow patterns; subsequently we summarize liquid holdup and pressure drop characteristics within packed beds. Furthermore, we analyze the underlying mechanisms involved in bubble breakup and coalescence phenomena occurring during continuous flow of gas–liquid dispersions, providing insights for reactor design and operation strategies. Finally, we summarize applications of packed bed reactors in carbon dioxide absorption, chemical reactions, and wastewater treatment while offering future perspectives. These findings serve as valuable references for optimizing gas–liquid separation processes.

The essential oil components of traditional Chinese medicine in-hospital preparation were complex, and one-dimensional chromatographic separation was difficult to completely separate them due to the limited peak capacity. This study was carried out to establish a comprehensive two-dimensional chromatographic separation and analysis method based on countercurrent chromatography (CCC) and gas chromatography (GC). In this paper, we focused on the separation of the essential oil of the traditional Chinese medicine in-hospital preparation Wenjing Tongluo San by CCC × GC, and explored the orthogonality between the two chromatographic techniques to provide the new technical support for the screening of the active ingredients. A solvent system composed of n-hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (9.5:0.5:8.5:1.5, v/v) was chosen for the first-dimensional CCC separation. All the fractions collected from CCC were transferred to GC for plotting two-dimensional contours map. The calculated capacity of the two-dimensional separation system exceeded 3000, which was 8 times more than that of the one-dimensional separation system. High orthogonality (r = 0.42) and spatial coverage factor (70.42%) were obtained. Meanwhile, all the fractions were identified by GC-MS. Our research provided a new methodology for separating essential oils in traditional Chinese medicine as well as an approach for evaluating the quality of traditional Chinese medicinal in-hospital preparation based on two-dimensional chromatographic fingerprints.

The large amount of wastewater containing various pollutants generated during the tungsten beneficiation process has become a bottleneck for the sustainable development of tungsten mining enterprises. Typical pollutants mainly include suspended solids (SSs), silicate ions, metal ions, and residual organic reagents. The direct discharge of untreated tungsten beneficiation wastewater can cause serious harm to the ecological environment, while recycling can significantly affect flotation indicators. In this paper, the sources and characteristics of typical pollutants were analyzed, and various purification techniques were outlined, including coagulation, adsorption, chemical precipitation, oxidation, and biological treatment methods. Among these techniques, coagulation is particularly effective for the removal of SSs, while adsorption and chemical precipitation are recommended for the removal of soluble ions. For residual organic reagents, oxidation methods have demonstrated high treatment efficiencies. The mainstream methods for wastewater recycling were summarized, including centralized recycling, as well as internal recycling at certain stages. For tungsten beneficiation such a complex process, where the quality of wastewater varies greatly between different stages, it is suitable to recycle the wastewater after appropriate treatment at a specific stage. Furthermore, this study provided a perspective on the future directions of tungsten beneficiation wastewater treatment, serving as a reference for related research and industrial practices.

The flowers of the ylang ylang tree contain an essential oil which is utilized in high-quality perfumes. The traditional mode of extraction is by steam distillation but it has been shown that the more modern supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using carbon dioxide has potential for replacing steam distillation. This technology, however, generally operates under high pressures, up to 500 bar. The work described in this paper examines the possibility of using carbon dioxide at much lower pressures, close to the critical point, i.e., 75 bar and 30 °C. Two series of experiments were therefore carried out under such conditions, the first using carbon dioxide alone and the second utilizing ethanol as a co-solvent, the conditions being chosen by applying the Design of Experiments (DOE) technique over ranges of pressure from 80 to 120 bar and temperatures from 35 to 50 °C. Extraction curves are presented which show the rates of extraction to be significantly increased by the use of the co-solvent, with the measured values being 0.74% to 0.97% with no co-solvent addition, increasing to 0.92% to 1.16% with co-solvent addition. These rates are, however, lower than the rates previously reported at higher pressures, i.e., 0.9 to 1.8%. Better quality oils are, however, produced compared to those at higher pressures, with the major components being benzene benzoate, benzene salicylate, cubebene, and benzyl acetate. It is recommended that an economic study be carried out to evaluate whether it is feasible to utilize this process commercially.

The utilization of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) has revolutionized the field of electrochemical applications, particularly in water electrolysis and fuel cells. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of recent studies conducted on various commercial AEMs, including FAA3-50, Sustainion, Aemion™, XION Composite, and PiperION™ membranes, with a focus on their performance and durability in AEM water electrolysis (AEMWE) and AEM fuel cells (AEMFCs). The discussed studies highlight the exceptional potential of these membranes in achieving high current densities, stable operation, and extended durability. Furthermore, the integration of innovative catalysts, such as nitrogen-doped graphene and Raney nickel, has demonstrated significant improvements in performance. Additionally, the exploration of PGM-free catalysts, such as Ag/C, for AEMFC cathodes has unveiled promising prospects for cost-effective and sustainable fuel cell systems. Future research directions are identified, encompassing the optimization of membrane properties, investigation of alternative catalyst materials, and assessment of performance under diverse operating conditions. The findings underscore the versatility and suitability of these commercial AEMs in water electrolysis and fuel cell applications, paving the way for the advancement of efficient and environmentally benign energy technologies. This review paper serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals seeking to enhance the performance and durability of AEMs in various electrochemical applications.

Furfural is an intermediary and aldehyde compound degraded from paper insulation, which is used with liquid fluid in power transformers. It can be utilized as an important indicator to evaluate the degradation degree of the paper insulation and the condition of transformers to predict their lifetime. However, the conventional methods are inevitably inconvenient as they require additional derivatization with hazardous agents and time-consuming chromatographic separation and processes. In this work, a facile and green analysis method for the determination of furfural concentration in the insulating fluid of operating power transformers was developed. As furfural was selectively extracted from the insulting fluid by deionized water, the aqueous solution could be directly subjected to a UV spectral analysis without any derivatization using hazardous agents or hindrance of the fluid in the UV spectrum. The results showed that the spectral method could obtain a favorable linear relationship between the concentration of furfural and its characteristic absorbance at 280 nm (λ max). The limit of detection (LOD) was below 0.1 ppm, which is a sufficient detection level to evaluate the condition of the insulating fluid. Furthermore, the method was compared with the conventional HPLC and colorimetric analyses, revealing satisfactory accuracy and verification of the results. It is possible to measure the furfural concentration in situ using a portable UV-spectrometer at a single wavelength, 280 nm, after simple extraction in the field. This approach offers a novel and green analytical method to quantitatively determine the aromatic furan compounds in a power transformer’s insulating fluid in place without the use of an organic extraction solvent or hazardous reagents for derivatization and analysis.

Poly-diallyldimethylammonium (PDADMAC) chloride is a flocculant agent extensively used in water clarification treatments. Commercial polyelectrolyte formulations often contain residual monomer (DADMAC), reaction by-products and other reactants as contaminants that could potentially affect human health. In the present study, we optimized an analytical method based on reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry for quantifying ultra-trace levels of DADMAC, without preliminary treatments, in drinking water distributed by the Palermo aqueduct. The method was validated in terms of accuracy (recovery between 80 to 120%), precision (RSD < 10%), linearity range (from 0.5 to 15 µg/L), limit of quantification and limit of detection (LOQ 0.42 µg/L and LOD 0.12 µg/L). DADMAC was detected in all analysed water samples and the concentration ranged from 1.2 to 3.8 µg/L whit a mean value of 1.7 µg/L. To the best of our knowledge, this paper represents the first study concerning DADMAC concentration in water samples collected in Italy and, in this context, this paper can be considered very interesting when comparing future data on DADMAC monitoring in water. Moreover, this is one of a few cases where DADMAC was found in drinking water.

Azo dyes are synthetic organic dyes used in the textile, leather, and paper industries. They pose environmental problems due to their toxic and persistent nature. The toxicity is due to the presence of azo groups in the dye molecule that can break down into aromatic amines, which are highly toxic to aquatic organisms and humans. Various treatment methods have been developed to remove azo dyes from wastewater. Conventional wastewater treatments have some drawbacks, such as high operating costs, long processing times, generation of sludge, and the formation of toxic by-products. For these reasons, a valid alternative is constituted by advanced oxidation processes. Good results have been obtained using heterogeneous photocatalysis and supercritical water oxidation. In the former method, a photocatalyst is in contact with wastewater, a suitable light activates the catalyst, and generated reactive oxygen species that react with pollutants through oxidative reactions to their complete mineralization; the latter involves pressurizing and heating wastewater to supercritical conditions in a reactor vessel, adding an oxidizing agent to the supercritical water, and allowing the mixture to react. In this review paper, works in the literature that deal with processing wastewater containing azo dyes through photocatalysts immobilized on macroscopic supports (structured photocatalysts) and the supercritical water oxidation technique have been critically analyzed. In particular, advancement in the formulation of structured photocatalysts for the degradation of azo dyes has been shown, underlying different important features, such as the type of support for the photoactive phase, reactor configuration, and photocatalytic efficiency in terms of dye degradation and photocatalyst stability. In the case of supercritical water oxidation, the main results regarding COD and TOC removal from wastewater containing azo dyes have been reported, taking into account the reactor type, operating pressure, and temperature, as well as the reaction time.

Limited or absent activity of the enzyme α-galactosidase A (α-Gal A), due to mutation in the related gene on the X chromosome, leads to the development of a rare hereditary and genetic disease known as Fabry disease (FD). This pathology involves a progressive accumulation in various organs of the substrates of the enzyme e.g., globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) and its deacylated form, globotriaosylsphingosine (Lyso-Gb3), suggesting these molecules as biomarkers of Fabry disease. The present paper describes the development of an analytical strategy for the identification and quantification of Gb3 and Lyso-Gb3, in serum and blood samples by using liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to mass spectrometry in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM/MS) ion mode. The best experimental conditions were obtained by extracting the glycolipids with chloroform/methanol/H2O (2/1/0.3) and by separating them on a C4 column with a linear gradient (A: H2O with 2 mM ammonium formate. B: methanol with 1 mM ammonium formate, both acidified with 0.2% formic acid). The best transitions (a combination of precursor and fragment ions—m/z) were 786.8 m/z > 268.3 m/z for Lyso-GB3, 1137.3 m/z > 264.3 m/z for Gb3, 1039.3 m/z > 264.4 m/z for N-heptadecanoyl-ceramide trihexoside, and 843.5 m/z > 264.3 m/z for N-glycinated lyso-ceramide trihexoside, the latter being used as an internal standard. The developed method provided a reliable, fast, and effective procedure for direct measurements of GB3 and Lyso-GB3 in serum and blood for diagnosis of Fabry disease, suggesting this method as a complementary assay to the current enzymatic test. Therefore, this approach could open new insights into the clinical diagnostics of lysosomal storage disorders.

The surging popularity of plant-based diets and the growing emphasis on clean-label products have intensified interest in Spirulina within the food industry. As more people adopt vegetarian, vegan, or flexitarian lifestyles, demand for plant-based protein sources has escalated. Spirulina’s high protein content and complete amino acid profile make it an ideal candidate to meet this demand. However, incorporating Spirulina into food products is not without its challenges. Its strong, earthy, or fishy taste can be off-putting to consumers and difficult to mask in food formulations. Furthermore, isolating Spirulina’s bioactive compounds while preserving their integrity is complex, especially considering the heat sensitivity of many of these components. Traditional extraction methods often employ high temperatures, which can degrade these valuable compounds. Consequently, there is a growing preference for non-thermal extraction techniques. This paper provides an overview of recent advancements in Spirulina cultivation, bioactive extraction, and their application in food products.

The exploitation and transportation of deep-sea and remote oil and gas fields have risen to become important components of national energy strategies. The gas–liquid separation and gas blocking caused by the large density difference between the gas and liquid phases are the primary influencing factors for the safe and reliable operation of gas–liquid mixed transportation pump systems. This paper takes the independently designed single-stage helical axial-flow mixed transportation pump compression unit as the research object. Through numerical simulation, the internal flow of the mixed transportation pump is numerically calculated to study the aggregation and conglomeration of small gas clusters in the flow passage hub caused by gas–liquid phase separation, influenced by the shear flow of phase separation, forming axial vortices at the outlet where gas clusters gather in the flow passage. The work performed by the impeller on the gas clusters is insufficient to overcome the adverse pressure gradient formed at the outlet of the flow passage due to the gathering of the liquid phase in adjacent flow passages, resulting in the phenomenon of gas blocking, with vortex gas clusters lingering near the hub wall of the flow passage.

At present, cobalt belongs to what are called critical raw materials due to its scarcity and its economic importance. Cobalt is a crucial element in the development of new technologies and applications for decarbonization, with around 40% of cobalt consumption being used for rechargeable battery materials. Additionally, cobalt-based catalysts are used in the production of hydrogen fuel cells, and this element is also employed in the production of superalloys for aerospace and power generation industries. For this reason, it is imperative to increase cobalt recycling by recovering from secondary sources, such as decommissioned lithium-ion batteries. Among the technologies for cobalt recovery, adsorption is a reliable alternative as it allows its recovery even at low concentrations in aqueous solutions and is relatively low in cost. Among the potential adsorbents for cobalt recovery, this paper reviews two of the most promising adsorbents for cobalt recovery from aqueous solutions: zeolitic and carbonaceous materials. Regarding zeolitic materials, the maximum adsorption capacities are reached by FAU-type zeolites. In the case of carbonaceous materials, the actual trend is to obtain activated carbons from a wide range of carbon sources, including waste, the adsorption capacities, on average, being larger than the ones reached with zeolitic materials. Additionally, activated carbons allow, in many cases, the selective separation of cobalt from other ions which are present at the same time in the aqueous solutions such as lithium.

Ultrasonic flotation is widely used as an efficient mineral separation method. Its efficiency is related to the adhesion behavior between fine particles and flotation bubbles, which can be influenced by the bubbles’ movement behavior. This paper used two immersed ultrasonic vibration plates to generate ultrasonic action and investigated the effect of ultrasonic action on the rising process of flotation bubbles. The distribution, aggregation and fusion, velocity, and other characteristics of bubbles generated by different needle apertures were studied by experimental and simulation methods. The results showed that a 0.4 mm needle produced bubbles that were more evenly spaced and more uniform in size and shape. The ultrasonic action can make the bubbles aggregate together and reduce the bubble rise velocity, as well as prolong their time in the flotation process at the same time. It is beneficial to the sufficient collision and adhesion behavior between flotation bubbles and particles, eventually improving the efficiency of mineral flotation.

This paper demonstrates the possibilities of the computer identification of individuals based on their digitized scent signatures using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. This identification is performed by comparing an unknown digital scent sample with digital scent signatures in a database. The olfactronic identification of persons performed by computers follows the olfactoric identification currently performed by trained dogs. Olfactoric identification is considered a subjective method, and therefore it needs to be supported by an objective olfactronic method. The results obtained in this study demonstrate the advantages of olfactronic identification. In addition, the olfactronic identification method makes it possible to compare and store in the database hundreds or even thousands of digital scent signatures based on chemical compounds from samples. A higher recognition percentage of identification is achieved when applying two differently constructed signatures. This article shows that with this approach, the comparison algorithm can reach up to 95-percent correct identification for unknown samples. This is quite a novel point and the rationale of this work. In this study, 400 scent samples from 40 volunteers (20 women and 20 men) were analyzed, where ten scent samples were taken from each person.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis and affects more than 240 million people worldwide; the most frequently affected areas are the hips, knees, feet, and hands. OA pathophysiology is multifactorial, involving genetic, developmental, metabolic, traumatic, and inflammation factors. Therefore, treatments able to address several path mechanisms can help control OA. Network pharmacology is developing as a next-generation research strategy to shift the paradigm of drug discovery from “one drug, one target” to “multi-component, multi-target”. In this paper, network pharmacology is employed to investigate the potential role of Paeoniae Radix Alba (PRA) in the treatment of OA. PRA is a natural product known for its protective effects against OA, which has recently drawn attention because of its ability to provide physiological benefits with fewer toxic effects. This review highlights the anti-inflammatory properties of PRA in treating OA. PRA can be used alone or in combination with conventional therapies to enhance their effectiveness and reduce side effects. The study also demonstrates the use of network pharmacology as a cost-effective and time-saving method for predicting therapeutic targets of PRA in OA treatment.

In the continuous scaling-up process of the separating system, a mechanism exists that transforms the behavior of the flow field, resulting in deviations from the original model and conclusions. The paper examined the effects of the scale up of a fluidized bed by CFD. It was observed that increasing the diameter reduces the amplitude of axial density fluctuations. Similarly, increasing the static height increases the amplitude. Moreover, increasing the static bed height enhances the visibility of the cyclic flow structure of gas and solid phases. The flow structure in large bed diameters is disrupted. The impact of changing the bed diameter on bed density is more significant than the static height. As the bed diameter increases, the bubble disturbance decreases and the aggregation phase gradually disappears while the proportion of the emulsified phase keeps increasing. This study will guide and assist in the future application of separated fluidized beds in industry.

Kudzu root (Puerariae lobatae Radix) is the tuberous root of Pueraria lobata, family Leguminosae. Kudzu root contains a variety of beneficial active ingredients such as puerarin, daidzin, daidzein, genistenin, 3′-hydroxy puerarin, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, arachidic acid, and so on. Modern medical research shows that active ingredients in kudzu root are widely used clinically as raw materials for the treatment of hyperglycemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, myocardial infarction, alcohol addiction, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and retinal blockage due to their various pharmacological effects such as improving cardiovascular circulation, lowering blood lipids, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, being antipyretic, being estrogen-like, and relieving alcohol. China has rich resources of kudzu root, and active ingredients are usually extracted before it is made into a preparation, so whether the extraction and separation process is reasonable will directly affect the ease of preparation and the efficacy of the treatment. This paper reviews the process methods for the extraction and separation of active ingredients in kudzu root and its common pharmacological activities. The aim is to provide some references for readers to compare the advantages and disadvantages of various extraction and separation methods as well as understand the active ingredients and pharmacological activities of kudzu root.

Lithium (Li) is vital to the world economy as an irreplaceable element in new-generation sustainable energy applications. Quantifying Li levels in clay minerals, a key new resource, supports extensive mineralization surveys. The major limitation in these analyses is complete decomposition, which often requires the use of strong acids and is labor-intensive, particularly in batch processing. This paper presents a partial extraction strategy for quantifying Li and multiple elements, employing ammonium hydrogen fluoride to extract from clay minerals while avoiding the use of various strong acids. Following extraction, the efficiency for Li reaches 98.61%, with values ranging from 62.68% to 91.43% for multiple elements including three major elements (Ca, Fe, Mg) and eleven trace elements (Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Mn, Ni, P, Rb, Sr, V), demonstrating favorable precision (RSD below 7.34%). This approach offers a promising tool for a simple and efficient batch analysis in the survey of mineralization in Li-bearing clay deposits.

In the pretreatment for the solid–liquid separation of sewage, the traditional hydrocyclone cannot reasonably achieve a high underflow concentration and high separation efficiency at the same time. An intermittent discharge concentrated hydrocyclone was proposed in this paper to solve this problem. In order to determine the specific separation performance of the intermittent discharge concentrated hydrocyclone, this paper studied the influence of the structure parameters and process parameters on its separation performance through experimental testing. The results indicate that increasing the overflow backpressure improves the separation efficiency but reduces the underflow concentration; that increasing the diameter of the overflow pipe and reducing the diameter of the underflow orifice improve the underflow concentration but reduce the separation efficiency; and that a proper increase in the inlet pressure simultaneously increases the separation efficiency and underflow concentration. The parameter combinations of the hydrocyclone were separately optimized for the underflow concentration and total separation efficiency.

The paper is dedicated to the research output presented at the jubilee 50th edition of the international scientific conference Synthesis and Analysis of Drugs 2022 (SAL), which was organized and hosted by the Faculty of Pharmacy of Masaryk University in Brno. Since its launch in 1971, when Jozef Čižmárik from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Comenius University in Bratislava started organizing SAL, significant progress in medicinal chemistry has been documented every year through the experimental works of researchers from different scientific institutions, both universities and academies of sciences as well as companies. We must point out long-term guest of SAL, Miroslav Protiva, co-founder of the antihistamine dosulepin and antiemetic moxastine-teoclas. As already mentioned, SAL 2022 was held at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Brno, which has been part of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences for 25 years but became part of Masaryk University in 2021. Hence, the year 2022 was unique not only because of the 50th anniversary of this meeting but also for this year’s conference was the first within this institution. What topics were discussed among SAL conference participants? The meeting addressed all issues related to drug research—their design, preparation, analysis, and detection methods, as well as their biological activity studies, ADME studies, etc. The multidisciplinary character of the research, including topics on pharmaceutical technology and innovative dosage form investigation, was an additional value of the conference and its outcomes. We would like to thank the organization team and all participants for both high-quality research presentations resulting in the output of this paper and for the informal and friendly atmosphere.

The ozone/peroxymonosulfate (O3/PMS) system has attracted widespread attention from researchers owing to its ability to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4•−) simultaneously. The existing research has shown that the O3/PMS system significantly degrades refinery trace organic compounds (TrOCs) in highly concentrated organic wastewater. However, there is still a lack of systematic understanding of the O3/PMS system, which has created a significant loophole in its application in the treatment of highly concentrated organic wastewater. Hence, this paper reviewed the specific degradation effect, toxicity change, reaction mechanism, various influencing factors and the cause of oxidation byproducts (OBPs) of various TrOCs when the O3/PMS system is applied to the degradation of highly concentrated organic wastewater. In addition, the effects of different reaction conditions on the O3/PMS system were comprehensively evaluated. Furthermore, given the limited understanding of the O3/PMS system in the degradation of TrOCs and the formation of OBPs, an outlook on potential future research was presented. Finally, this paper comprehensively evaluated the degradation of TrOCs in highly concentrated organic wastewater by the O3/PMS system, filling the gaps in scale research, operation cost, sustainability and overall feasibility.

Honey is a natural product that is used by a large number of people because of its distinctive compositional constituents, which have a considerable impact on its market value. The distinctive combination of amino acids and sugars found in honey’s composition, along with its peptide content, could potentially provide several benefits to human health. During the past few years, cutting-edge techniques have been developed and used for the purpose of investigating, identifying, and characterizing peptides that are produced from honey bees. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to examine current trends and technological advancements in the study of honey bee-derived peptides, focusing on innovative and cutting-edge methods. Furthermore, this review explores various attributes of honey and its components, including the honey bee-derived peptide defensin-1. In addition, this review investigates various methods for separating and purifying peptides, as well as the factors that affect these methods. Additionally, defensin-1, a peptide produced by honey bees, is discussed along with its antioxidant and antimicrobial capabilities. In addition, this review focuses on cutting-edge and innovative omic methods used to study honey bee peptides, as well as the significance of artificial intelligence tools in their investigation. Consequently, the review paper delves into various significant obstacles faced by researchers and scientists studying honey bee peptides, while also offering an extensive range of fascinating opportunities and possibilities for future research for those interested in groundbreaking discoveries in this area.

The frequent occurrence of oil spills and the massive discharge of oily wastewater pose a significant threat to sustainable and healthy human development. Therefore, it is of importance to effectively separate oil–water mixtures. Inspired by nature, many superwetting surfaces/materials for oil–water separation have been developed in recent years. However, these surfaces/materials are subject to certain limitations and are unable to fully meet practical needs. With the advancement of laser technology, a novel solution has been provided for fabricating superwetting oil–water separation materials. Based on the design theory and separation mechanism, this paper summarizes the research progress of the laser-fabricated superwetting surfaces/materials for oil–water separation in recent years. First, the basic wetting theory, design strategy, and oil–water separation mechanism of the laser-fabricated materials are introduced in detail. Subsequently, the laser-fabricated oil–water separation materials, including superoleophilic/superhydrophobic materials, superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials, and materials with reversible or superamphiphilic wettability, are systematically summarized and analyzed. Finally, the challenges and future research directions of laser-fabricated superwetting oil–water separation materials are discussed.

Magnetic separation technology is a physical separation method that uses the differences in magnetism between matter to separate them from each other by different motion behaviors in a non-uniform magnetic field. It is highly efficient, green, and environmentally friendly, with little change in the physical and chemical properties of raw materials. Magnetic separation technology is commonly used in the field of mineral processing engineering for magnetite, hematite, titanite, and other magnetic ferrous metal oxide minerals. This paper summarizes the application of magnetic separation technology for resource utilization and environmental treatment in different fields, such as non-metal decomposition, valuable metal recovery, use of magnetic carrier chemical separation, biomedical targeted magnetic separation, and use of magnetic species separation in water and wastewater treatment. We seek to review the application and potential of magnetic separation technology in various fields, emphasize their key role, and explore possible directions for their future development.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a group of chemicals used to improve the flexibility and durability of plastics. The chemical properties and the resistance to high temperatures promote their degradation and release into the environment. Food and beverages can be contaminated by PAEs through the migration from packaging material because they are not covalently bound to plastic and also via different kinds of environmental sources or during processing. For instance, alcoholic drinks in plastic containers are a particular risk, since the ethanol contained provides a good solubility for PAEs. According to its role as an endocrine disruptor compound and its adverse effects on the liver, kidney, and reproductive and respiratory systems, the International Agency on Research Cancer (IARC) classified di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) as a possible human carcinogen. For this reason, to control human exposure to PAEs, many countries prohibited their use in food as non-food substances. For example, in Europe, the Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/2005 restricts the use of DEHP, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) to a concentration equal to or below 0.1 by weight in plasticizers in articles used by consumers or in indoor areas. There are reports from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that some beverages (and food as well), particularly fruit juices, contain high levels of phthalates. In some cases, the deliberate adulteration of soft drinks with phthalate esters has been reported. This paper would like to show the difficulties of performing PAE analysis in beverage matrices, in particular alcoholic beverages, as well as the main solutions provided for quality control in the industrial branches.

Low P-containing wastewaters (LPWs) exhibit huge P recovery potential, considering their larger volume. P recovery via CaP crystallization using apatite as seed is documented as being potentially well suited for LPWs. However, its responsible mechanisms remain a subject for debate. Taking hydroxyapatite (HAP) as the seed of LPWs, this paper conducted HAP adsorption/dissolution experiments, titration experiments, and P recovery experiments to distinguish the primary responsible mechanism. Results showed that it was HAP dissolution, not P adsorption, that occurred when the initial P concentration was no higher than 5 mg/L, ruling out adsorption mechanism of P recovery from LPWs using HAP as the seed. Significant OH− consumption and rapid P recovery occurred simultaneously within the first 60 s in titration experiments, suggesting CaP crystallization should be responsible for P recovery. Moreover, the continuous increase in P recovery efficiency with seed dosages observed in P recovery experiments seemed to follow well the mechanism of pre-nucleation ion clusters (PNCs) aggregation. During PNCs aggregation, P aggregates with Ca2+ quickly, generating CaP PNCs; then, CaP PNCs aggregate with seed particles, followed by CaP PNCs fusion, and ultimately transform into fines attached to the seed surface. PNCs’ aggregation mechanism was further supported by a comparison of seed SEM images before and after P recovery, since denser and smaller rod-shaped fines were observed on the seed surface after P recovery. This study suggests that PNCs’ aggregation is the dominant mechanism responsible for the recovery of P from LPWs via CaP crystallization using HAP as the seed.

Gallium (Ga), indium (In), and germanium (Ge) play an important role in the modern high-tech material field. Due to their low content and scattered distribution in the crust, and the increasing demand for these metals in recent years, their supply risks have sharply increased. Therefore, the recycling of these metals is of great significance. In this work, a systematic review was performed using the Web of Science, Scopus, MDPI, Elsevier, and Springer Link databases. The combined terms used for the search were Ga/In/Ge, extraction, separation, and recycling. After a careful evaluation of the titles, abstracts, and full texts, a total of 106 articles were included. This paper briefly describes the resource features of Ga, In, and Ge. After that, the chemical principles, technical parameters, and metal recovery in various extraction and separation methods from monometallic and polymetallic resources are systematically reviewed. Leaching followed by solvent extraction or ion exchange is the main process for Ga, In, and Ge recovery. Although many attempts have been made to separate multiple metals from leaching solutions, highly selective solvents and resins are still the research priority. This review can provide theoretical and technical guidance for the separation of Ga, In, and Ge from various resources.

To better control the quality of saponins, ensure their biological activity and clinical therapeutic effect, and expand the development and application of saponins, this paper systematically and comprehensively reviews the separation and analytical methods of saponins in the past decade. Since 2010, the electronic databases of PubMed, Google Scholar, ISI Web of Science, Science Direct, Wiley, Springer, CNKI (National Knowledge Infrastructure, CNKI), Wanfang Med online, and other databases have been searched systematically. As a result, it is found that ionic liquids and high-performance countercurrent chromatography are the most popular extraction and separation techniques for saponins, and the combined chromatography technique is the most widely used method for the analysis of saponins. Liquid chromatography can be used in combination with different detectors to achieve qualitative or quantitative analysis and quality control of saponin compounds in medicinal materials and their preparations. This paper provides the latest valuable insights and references for the analytical methods and continued development and application of saponins.

Gas turbines must now comply with much stricter emission control regulations. In fact, to combat the greenhouse effect, regulatory authorities have drastically reduced allowable emission levels. For example, in less than 12 years, the United States’ Clean Air Act issued the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), which tightened the NOx emission margin of natural gas combustion (from 75 ppm to 10 ppm). On the other hand, despite those efforts, the high demand for energy produced by fossil-fueled gas turbines in power plants has resulted in dramatic increases in anthropogenic CO2 and NOx emitted by gas combustors. Most systems responsible for these undesirable emissions are directly linked to power generation, with gas turbines playing a pivotal role. Yet, gas turbines are still widely used in power plants and will continue to meet the growing demand. Therefore, sequestration and separation techniques such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Air Separation Units (ASU) are essential to reduce CO2 and NOx emissions while allowing large amounts of power to be generated from these systems. This paper provides an in-depth examination of the current state of the art in alternative working fluids utilized in the power generation industry (i.e., gas turbines, combustion). In addition, this paper highlights the recent contribution of integrating separation techniques, such as air separation, steam methane reforming, and water-gas shifting, to the power generation industry to facilitate a continuous and adequate supply of alternative working fluids.

In new food formulations, carotenoids and phenolic compounds are likely to be the most sought after food ingredients according to their bioactivity, nutraceutical, nutritional value, and compatibility properties once incorporated into food formulations. Such solutes are naturally present in many plant-based sources, and some portions are directly consumed when enriching food products and formulations; however, some portions, which are contained in the parts of the plant sources not considered edible, including the leaves, peel, and seeds, among other by-products, are commonly wasted. Related to this, scientists have found a new window for obtaining these bioactive molecules, but their recovery remains a challenge. To some extent, the final purification and polishing requires highly selective performance to guarantee the desired properties and concentration. In this regard, membrane technologies, such as nanofiltration (NF), represent an alternative, owing to their highly selective properties when separating low-molecular-weight compounds. NF becomes immediately suitable when the pretreated extracts are subjected to further efficient concentration, fractionation, and polishing of phenolic fractions and carotenoids. The separation efficiency (usually higher than 97%) of NF technology is high according to the low pore size of NF membranes, but the low temperature in process separation also contributes to the separation of thermolabile compounds. Therefore, this paper reviews the ongoing cases of studies reporting the successful separation and polishing of phenolic fractions and carotenoids from distinct sources. In particular, we have focused our attention on the main interactions during the separation process and the drawbacks and advantages of using membranes for such a case study.

Global food waste has a huge impact on the environment, as it is a source of greenhouse gas emissions and wasted natural resources. Across the world, over 30% of food is lost or wasted each year. Aside from this, the food industry, as well, is one of the biggest sources of agro-industrial waste and by-products, which can be valorized and used for different purposes. Such waste is a good source of bioactive organic compounds that can be extracted without altering their properties, where deep eutectic solvents can serve as green solvents and as an excellent replacement for volatile organic solvents. Isolated compounds can be used in innovative food production, chemical production, cosmetics and other industries. Deep eutectic solvents have attracted extraordinary attention due to their advantages such as environmental friendliness, availability and easy preparation, easy handling and utilization of non-toxic components for their formation. Due to these properties, they are a greener alternative to classic organic solvents for many processes, including extractions. In this paper, we review the utilization of deep eutectic solvents as potential green media for the extraction of organic compounds such as polyphenols, carbohydrates, proteins and alkaloids from by-products of the food industry and from agro-industrial waste.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a kind of green environmental protection technology, which are widely used in sewage treatment. Traditional CWs are faced with the problem of a low treatment effect of high-concentration sewage. In recent years, biochar, as a new type of adsorption material, has been used in CWs because of its advantages of large specific surface area, strong adsorption capacity, and wide material sources. This paper systematically summarized the characteristics of biochar and the preparation of biochar by studying the changes in microorganisms added to CWs and compared the effects of different treatment methods coupled with biochar on the treatment performance of CWs. The effects of biochar coupled with CWs on enzyme activity, functional genes, metabolites, and microbial communities were investigated. This review summarizes how different preparation methods affect the properties of biochar and how these biochar properties cause changes in the microorganisms added to CWs. It provides a new theoretical basis for the treatment of pollutants in CWs.

Since CO2 is an important component of gas emissions, its removal from gas streams is of the utmost importance to fulfill various environmental requirements. The technologies used to accomplish this removal are based mainly on absorption, as well as adsorption and membrane processing. Among the materials used in the above separation processes, materials in nano forms offer a potential alternative to other commonly used macromaterials. The present work reviews the most recent publications (2023) about CO2 capture using different nanomaterials, and whilst most of these publications were dedicated to investigating the above, several presented data on the separation of CO2 from other gases, namely nitrogen and methane. Furthermore, a number of publications investigated the recyclability of nanomaterials under continuous use, and just three of the references were about computational modeling; all others were experimental papers, and only one reference used a real industrial gas.
