In recent times, there has been a notable surge in the interest in promoting environmentally conscious products, particularly within the building industry where the focus has shifted towards sustainable materials. In this study, as a sustainable building material, ceiling tiles have been fabricated as a composite board containing waste materials, namely waste paper, sawdust, recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and epoxy resin, and characterized comprehensively through physical and mechanical tests, density, thickness swelling (TS), modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and flexural strength (FS) for product stability. A total of nine composites were fabricated with different ratios through molding techniques, and the characterization results were compared to determine the optimized stable ratio of composite composition. The composition of 25% waste paper, 15% sawdust, 10% recycled PET, and 50% epoxy resin presented the maximum FS compared to the other composite ratios. Water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling were evaluated after immersion durations of 1–24 h. The findings revealed that as the density increased, the sawdust content within the matrix decreased from 25–35%. Concurrently, an increase in recycled PET content resulted in decreased water absorption and thickness swelling. Significantly, the MOE, MOR, and FS demonstrated optimal values at 864.256 N/mm2, 12.786 N/mm2, and 4.64 MPa, respectively. These observations represent the excellent qualities of this hybrid composite board, particularly in terms of sustainability, stability, and water absorption capacity. Moreover, its lightweight nature and ability to support ceiling loads further enhance its appeal for construction applications. This study not only advances the discourse on sustainable construction materials but also fosters opportunities for broader acceptance and innovation within the industry.

We propose a unique form of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), paper DSSCs based on carbon-nanotube (CNT) composite papers, and the use of a gel electrolyte for the paper DSSC. In our previous study, we succeeded in developing the paper DSSC. However, its performance and lifetime were not sufficient. We considered that the problem was the use of liquid-type electrolyte. To improve the performance of the paper DSSC, a gel electrolyte was introduced to increase safety and durability. Here, a polymer gel electrolyte was synthesized using a copolymer of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a matrix, mixed with iodine and potassium iodide. The resulting paper DSSC had a fill factor (FF, a performance indicator) of 0.248 and a conversion efficiency of 2.43 × 10−5% with an extended working time (lifetime) of more than 110 min. Further modifications were made to the metallic CNT composite paper and the gel electrolyte, resulting in an increased conversion efficiency of 2.02 × 10−3%. This study suggests the potential of gel electrolytes in enhancing the performance of paper DSSCs, providing new insights for their future applications.

The purpose of the present study is to offer an optimal model to predict the tensile index of the paper being consumed to make veneer impregnated with different weight ratios of modified starch (from 3.18 to 36.8%) to urea formaldehyde resin (WR) containing different formaldehyde to urea molar ratios (MR, from 1.16:1 to 2.84:1) enriched by different contents of silicon nano-oxide (NC, from 0 to 4%) using multiple linear regression (MLR) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and compare the precision of these two models to estimate the response being examined (tensile index). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmittance electron microscopy (TEM) were also used to analyze the results. The results of studying the adhesive structure using FTIR analysis showed that as the WR increased to the maximum level and MR increased to the average level (3%), more ether and methylene linkage forms due to cross-linking. TEM analysis also indicated that if an average level of silicon nano-oxide is applied, there will be more cross-linking due to the more uniform distribution and suitable interactions between the adhesive and nanoparticles. The modeling results showed that the ANFIS model estimates have been closer to the actual values compared to the MLR model. It can be concluded that the model offered by ANFIS has a higher potential to predict the tensile index of the paper impregnated with the combined adhesive of UF resin and modified starch. However, the MLR model could not offer a good estimate to predict the response. According to the preferred approach to predict the most effective property of resin coated paper, modelling would be useful to the research community and the results are beneficial in industrial applications without spending more cost and time.

Composite laminate recycling and waste disposal routes remain a burden to existing systems, requiring special treatment and separation. The inclusion of a plastic layer is important for several key properties that are required for food safety, which in turn has made these products exceptionally hard to substitute in food packaging. Yet, the continued use of non-degradable commodity plastics is unsustainable. In this research, we compare the four most promising biodegradable and bio-based plastics that could replace non-degradable plastics in laminates. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polybutylene succinate adipate (PBSA) were applied as a direct melt coating on porous cast hemp papers, and the final composite was compressed under three different loads: 0.5 MT, 1.5 MT, and 3.0 MT. To promote sustainable agriculture waste management, we opted to use cast paper made from ground hemp stalks. The formation of the composite structure was examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while surface wetting on the paper side of the laminate was performed to understand structural changes induced by polymer impregnation into the paper layer. Mechanical performance properties were investigated with tensile and peel tests, and suitability for an extended range of temperatures was examined with dynamical mechanical analysis. An increase in compression pressure yielded up to a two-fold improvement in elastic modulus and tensile strength, while thermomechanical analysis revealed that the polymer’s transition into a viscoelastic state significantly affected the laminate’s storage modulus values. Biodegradation was performed in a controlled compost at 58 °C, resulting in full degradation within 40 to 80 days, with PLA and PHA laminates showing 40 and 50 days, respectively. Produced bioplastic laminates have a tremendous potential to replace polyolefin laminates in packaging applications.

This paper deals with the design, preparation, and characterization of conductive and flexible nanopapers based on graphite nanoplates (GNP) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Highly porous GNP nanopapers were first prepared by filtration from a GNP suspension in a solvent. Subsequently, PDMS impregnation was carried out to obtain a composite material. By varying the concentration of the polymer solution and the deposition time, PDMS/GNP nanopapers were produced with a wide range of PDMS contents, porosities, and densities. Thermal diffusivity of the composite films (both in-plane and cross-plane) were measured and correlated with the structure of the nanopapers. Selected formulations were investigated in detail for their physical, thermal, and mechanical properties, exhibiting high flexibility and resistance to more than 50 repeated bendings, stiffness of up to 1.3 MPa, and thermal conductivity of up to 25 W/m∙K. Based on the properties obtained, the materials presented in this paper may find applications in modern lightweight and flexible electronic devices.

A highly crystalline ordered Cu-TiO2 nanostructure was synthesized using a simple paper template method using cupric nitrate and titanium isopropoxide as precursors. The structural study by XRD confirmed the formation of highly crystalline anatase phase of Cu-TiO2. The broad diffraction peaks of Cu-TiO2 exhibit the nanocrystalline nature of the product. The optical study by UV-DRS indicated the red shift in absorption wavelength with an increase in Cu doping, i.e., towards the visible region. The FE-SEM and FE-TEM study validated the formation of spherical shaped nanoparticles of Cu-TiO2 having sizes in the range of 20–30 nm. Considering the absorption in the visible region, the photocatalytic study was performed for water splitting and rhodamine-B (RhB) dye degradation under natural sunlight. The 2% Cu-doped TiO2 showed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, i.e., 1400 µmol·g−1·h−1 from water, among the prepared compositions. The photocatalytic performance of Cu-TiO2 conferred complete degradation of RhB dye within 40 min. The higher activity in both cases was attributed to the formation of highly crystalline ordered nanostructure of Cu-doped TiO2. This synthesis approach has potential to prepare other highly crystalline ordered nanostructured semiconductors for different applications.

In recent decades, metal-containing nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention from researchers. In the present study, a detailed analysis of the preparation of Ag/C nanocomposites through the thermolysis of silver maleate was carried out. Thermolysis products are nanocomposites containing silver nanoparticles (NPs) uniformly distributed in a stabilizing carbon matrix. The composition, structure, and properties of the obtained nanocomposites were studied using IR-spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). This article reports on the possibility of using Ag/C nanocomposites to create new indicator papers that are sensitive to iodide ions in the concentration range of 0.03–1.6 mg/L (0.24–12.6 μM). The developed papers are used in a technique based on the oxidation of iodides with the formation of molecular iodine, which is extracted in an air stream and transferred to a sensitive paper layer containing silver NPs. The interaction of silver NPs with iodine leads to optical changes that can be tracked using a conventional scanner.

Natural fibres have been used as fibre reinforcements in composites as they offer eco-friendly and economic advantages, but their susceptibility to deterioration when exposed to heat and flames has limited their practical application in fibre-reinforced polymeric composites. Fire-reaction properties have been explored in reasonable detail for plant fibres, but a gap exists in the understanding of animal fibre-reinforced composites. Understanding the thermal and fire reactions of these keratin-rich animal fibres is crucial for material selection and advancing composite product development. The current paper critically discusses the existing research landscape and suggests future research directions. The use of keratinous fibres in composites can definitely improve their thermal stability and fire performance, but it also appears to adversely affect the composite’s mechanical performance. The main part of this paper focuses on the flame-retardant treatment of keratinous fibres and polymer composites, and their behaviour under fire conditions. The final part of this paper includes a brief look at the environmental impact of the treatment methods; the overall processing of keratinous fibre-reinforced composites is also presented to gain further insight.

The paper presents a critical review and new accomplishments on the equivalence of the first-order displacement-based zigzag theories for laminated composite and sandwich structures. Zigzag theories (ZZTs) have widely spread among researchers over the last few decades thanks to their accuracy in predicting the response of multilayered composite and sandwich structures while retaining the simplicity of their underlying equivalent single-layer (ESL) theory. The displacement field consists of two main contributions: the global one, able to describe the overall structural behaviour, and the local layer-wise one that considers the transverse shear continuity at the layer interfaces that describe the “zigzag” displacement pattern typical of multilayered structures. In the framework of displacement-based linear ZZTs, various assumptions have been made on the local contribution, and different theories have been deduced. This paper aims to provide a unified formulation for first-order ZZTs, highlighting some common aspects and underlying equivalencies with existing formulations. The mathematical demonstrations and the numerical examples prove the equivalence of the approaches to characterising local zigzag enrichment. Finally, it is demonstrated that the kinematic assumptions are the discriminants of the ZZTs’ accuracy.

This paper is the first part of a two-part paper that discusses the development of a novel lightweight and cost-effective hybrid 3D composite material and its and utilization for constructing utility poles. The main objective was to generate a material/pole with a comparable performance to the commercially available poles made of 2D fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) and examine its feasibility. The novel hybrid composite was configured using a recently developed and marketed 3D E-glass fabric–epoxy composite reinforced with wood dowels, referred to as 3D dowel-reinforced FRPs (3D-drFRPs) hereafter. Firstly, the compressive and flexural properties of the 3D-drFRPs are evaluated. Then, the development of the 3D pole is discussed followed by the fabrication details of two 3D-drFRPs using the standard test method, and their responses are compared. For the second part, robust finite element (FE) models were developed in an LS-DYNA environment and calibrated based on the experimental results. A sophisticated nonlinear FE model was used to simulate the performances of ASTM standard-size compression and three-point bending specimens and tapered 2D and prismatic 3D poles. Moreover, the responses of equivalent 2D and 3D poles were simulated numerically, as the task could not be accommodated experimentally due to our laboratory’s deficiencies. The integrity of the numerical simulation results was validated against experimental results, confirming the accuracy of the developed model. As an example, the stiffness values for the 3-pt bending specimens and the 3D poles obtained through the simulations were very close to the experimentally obtained results, with small margins of errors of 3.2% and 0.89%, respectively. Finally, a simplified analytical calculation method was developed so practicing engineers can determine the stiffnesses of 3D-DrFRP poles very accurately and quickly.

The development of all-bio-based composites is one of the relevant aspects of pursuing a carbon-neutral economy. This study aims to explore the possibility to reinforce polylactic acid by the combination of cellulose and chitin nanofibers instead of a single reinforcement phase. Polylactic acid colloidal suspension, cellulose and chitin nanofiber suspensions were mixed using only water as mixing medium and subsequently dewatered to form paper-like sheets. Sheets were hot pressed to melt the polylactic acid and form nanocomposites. The combination of cellulose and chitin nanofiber composites delivered higher tensile properties than its counterparts reinforced with cellulose or chitin nanofibers alone. Cellulose and chitin appear to complement each other from the aspect of the formation of a rigid cellulose nanofiber percolated network, and chitin acting as a compatibilizer between hydrophobic polylactic acid and hydrophilic cellulose.

The present paper investigates the unexpected unstable failure observed commonly on fiber tows tensile-tested under strain-controlled loading, although the force on the fibers should theoretically be relaxed under controlled strain. A model of the reaction of the load train when the fibers break under strain-controlled conditions is proposed. The criterion for instability is based on the comparison of the filament strength gradient and the overstress induced by the reaction of the load train when the fibers fail. The contribution of multiplet filament failures attributed to the fiber inter-friction and stress waves was taken into account. The compliance of the load train for the test results considered in the present paper was measured. It is shown that, depending on the number of filaments sharing the overload, the values of the structural parameters, and the fiber characteristics, the condition of unstable failure may have been fulfilled by the SiC fiber tows that were tested in house, as discussed in the present paper. The critical parameters that were identified and quantified include the load train compliance, gauge length, fiber stiffness, and bonding of the tow ends. This should allow the proper conditions for stable failure. Important implications for the validity and an analysis of the strengths derived from the unstable fracture of the tows are discussed.

Sandwich composites are often used as primary load-bearing structures in various industries like aviation, wind, and marine due to their high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, but they are vulnerable to damage from Low-velocity-impact (LVI) events like dropped tools, hail, and birdstrikes. This often manifests in the form of Facesheet-Core-Debonding (FCD) and is often termed Barely-Visible-Impact-Damage (BVID), which is difficult to detect and can considerably reduce mechanical properties. In general, a balsa core sandwich is especially vulnerable to FCD under LVI as it has poorer adhesion than synthetic core materials. A cork core sandwich does show promise in absorbing LVI with low permanent indentation depth. This paper also reviews surface treatment/modification as a means of improving the adhesion of composite core and fiber materials: key concepts involved, a comparison of surface free energies of various materials, and research literature on surface modification of cork, glass, and carbon fibers. Since both balsa and cork have a relatively low surface free energy compared to other materials, this paper concludes that it may be possible to use surface modification techniques to boost adhesion and thus FCD on balsa or cork sandwich composites under LVI, which has not been covered by existing research literature.

Additive manufacturing by 3D printing has emerged as a promising construction method offering numerous advantages, including reduced material usage and construction waste, faster build times, and optimized architectural forms. One area where 3D printing’s potential remains largely unexplored is in combination with lightweight materials, especially lightweight gypsum. This research paper explores the potential of combining 3D printing technology with lightweight gypsum-based composites to extend the relatively limited gypsum application possibilities in the construction industry. The study investigates the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads as an aggregate in gypsum composites, focusing on the printability of the mixture and hardened state mechanical properties in various print directions. Mechanical tests reveal that 3D printing can reduce the compressive strength of the EPS–gypsum composite by between 3% and 32%, and the flexural strength by up to 22%, depending on testing direction. However, the technology opens up new production possibilities for applications where such strength can be sufficient. The study describes that a slight increase in the water-to-gypsum (W/G) ratio in 3D-printed mortars enhances homogeneity and reduces porosity, resulting in improved structural uniformity and therefore higher flexural and compressive strength values. Furthermore, the paper discusses the mechanical anisotropy observed in 3D-printed samples. The combination of 3D printing technology and lightweight gypsum offers the potential for sustainable construction practices by reusing waste materials and creating lightweight, thermally and acoustically insulative, as well as architecturally diverse building components.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques are crucial in making informed decisions about reconstructing or repairing building structures. The SonReb method, a combination of the rebound hammer (RH) and the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests, is widely used for this purpose. To evaluate the compressive strength, CS, of the concrete under investigation, the ultrasonic pulse velocity Vp and the rebound index R must be mapped to the compressive strength CS using a suitable conversion model, the identification of which requires supplementing the NDT measurements with destructive-type measurements (DT) on a relatively large number of concrete cores. An approach notably indicated in all cases where the minimization of the number of cores is essential is to employ a pre-existing conversion model, i.e., a model derived from previous studies conducted in the literature, which must be appropriately calibrated. In this paper, we investigate the performance of Gaussian process regression (GPR) in calibrating the pre-existing SonReb conversion models, exploiting their ability to handle nonlinearity and uncertainties. The numerical results obtained using experimental data collected from the literature show that GPR calibration is very effective, outperforming, in most cases, the standard multiplicative and additive techniques used to calibrate the SonReb models.

Aligned discontinuous fibre-reinforced composites are becoming more popular because they have the potential to offer stiffness and strength comparable to their continuous counterparts along with better manufacturability. However, the modelling of highly aligned discontinuous fibre composites is still in its infancy. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the available literature to understand how modelling techniques have developed and consider whether all aspects which could affect the performance of aligned discontinuous fibre composites have been addressed. Here, for the first time, a broad view of the advantages, perspectives, and limitations of current approaches to modelling the performance and behaviour of aligned discontinuous fibre composites during alignment, forming, and mechanical loading is provided in one place as a route to design optimisation.

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are revolutionizing various industries with their customizable properties, a key advantage over traditional composites. The rise of voxel-based 3D printing has furthered the development of FGMs with complex microstructures. Despite these advances, current design methods for FGMs often use abstract mathematical functions with limited relevance to actual performance. Furthermore, conventional micromechanics models for the analysis of FGMs tend to oversimplify, leading to inaccuracies in effective property predictions. To address these fundamental deficiencies, this paper introduces new gradation functions for functionally graded beams (FGBs) based on bending strain energy density, coupled with a voxel-based design and analysis approach. For the first time, these new gradation functions directly relate to structural performance and have proven to be more effective than conventional ones in improving beam performance, particularly under complex bending moments influenced by various loading and boundary conditions. This study reveals the significant role of primary and secondary gradation indices in material composition and distribution, both along the beam axis and across sections. It identifies optimal combinations of these indices for enhanced FGB performance. This research not only fills gaps in FGB design and analysis but also opens possibilities for applying these concepts to other strain energy density types, like shearing and torsion, and to different structural components such as plates and shells.

High-Performance Concrete (HPC) and Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) have many applications in civil engineering industries. These two types of concrete have as many similarities as they have differences with each other, such as the mix design and additive powders like silica fume, metakaolin, and various fibers, however, the optimal percentages of the mixture design properties of each element of these concretes are completely different. This study investigated the differences and similarities between these two types of concrete to find better mechanical behavior through mixture design and parameters of each concrete. In addition, this paper studied the correlation matrix through the machine learning method to predict the mechanical properties and find the relationship between the concrete mix design elements and the mechanical properties. In this way, Linear, Ridge, Lasso, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Decision tree, and Partial least squares (PLS) regressions have been chosen to find the best regression types. To find the accuracy, the coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) were selected. Finally, PLS, Linear, and Lasso regressions had better results than other regressions, with R2 greater than 93%, 92%, and 92%, respectively. In general, the present study shows that HPC and UHPC have different mix designs and mechanical properties. In addition, PLS, Linear, and Lasso regressions are the best regressions for predicting mechanical properties.

This paper discusses methods of using biomass from the agriculture, forestry, food and aquaculture industries as potential raw materials for bio-polyols and as fillers in the production of rigid polyurethane (RPUR) foams. Various aspects of obtaining bio-polyols are discussed, as well as the impact of replacing petrochemical polyols with bio-polyols on the properties of foams. Special attention is paid to the conversion of vegetable oils and lignin. Another important aspect of the research is the use of biomass as foam fillers. Chemical and physical modifications are discussed, and important factors, such as the type and origin of biomass, particle size and amount, affecting the foaming process, microstructure and properties of RPUR foams are identified. The advantages and disadvantages of using biomass in foam production are described. It is found that bio-polyols can replace (at least partially) petrochemical polyols while maintaining the high insulation and strength of foams. In the case of the use of biomass as fillers, it is found that the shaping of their properties is largely dependent on the specific characteristics of the filler particles. This requires further research into process optimization but allows for the fine-tuning of RPUR foam properties to meet specific requirements.

A sophisticated characterisation of a porous material structure has been challenging in material science. Three-dimensional (3D) structure analysis allows the evaluation of a material’s homogeneity, pore size distribution and pore wall properties. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) offers a non-destructive test method for material evaluation. This paper characterises a novel ternary binder’s porous structure using micro-CT. Gypsum–cement–pozzolan (GCP) ternary binders are low-carbon footprint binders. Both natural and industrial gypsum were evaluated as a major components of GCP binders. Porous GCP binder was obtained by a foaming admixture, and the bulk density of the material characterised ranged from 387 to 700 kg/m3. Micro-CT results indicate that pores in the range from 0.017 to 3.0 mm can be effectively detected and described for porous GCP binders. The GCP binder structure proved to be dominant by 0.1 to 0.2 mm micropores. For GCP binders produced with natural gypsum, macropores from 2.2 to 2.9 mm are formed, while GCP binders with phosphogypsum possess pores from 0.2 to 0.6 mm. Micro-CT proved to be an effective instrument for characterising the homogeneity and hierarchical pore structure of porous ternary binders.

This study investigates the mechanical properties of tiled laminates, frequently used in FRP bridges, and a completely new class of composites for which currently no experimental literature is available. In this paper, first a microscopic examination of laminates extracted from bridge deck flanges is performed, revealing complex multi-ply structures and tiled laminates in the transverse direction of the bridge deck. The subsequent fabrication of tiled laminates in the transverse (i.e., weak) and longitudinal (i.e., strong) span direction explores stiffness and strength characteristics depending on the stacking angle. It is observed that the stiffness in both directions is only slightly reduced with increasing stacking angles, reaching a maximum decrease of 10%, while the failure strength is significantly reduced, particularly with longitudinal tiling, dropping by approximately 70% for a 2° stacking angle. Transverse tiling demonstrates a more moderate 45% strength reduction due to the presence of some 90° plies. Given the small reduction in the stiffness and the fact that in many applications the design is mainly governed by serviceability (i.e., stiffness) requirements than strength, this strength reduction may be acceptable, considering other advantages of the concept. Additionally, this research sheds light on failure mechanisms, emphasizing the role of ply assembly in stress distribution and highlighting the importance of gradual ply ends in reducing strain concentrations. These findings provide valuable insights for optimizing tiled laminates in structural applications, ensuring their effective and reliable use.

There is a wide variety of superconducting materials, but only a few of them are suitable for practical industrial use, and one of the most promising superconductors is MgB2. Its main advantages are a critical temperature close to 40 K, which allows for operation in a cryogenic environment, low cost of precursors, and the ease of manufacture. In this paper, we attempted to obtain superconducting materials based on magnesium diboride in a new way by using a high-temperature centrifuge and then investigated how centrifugal acceleration could affect the superconducting characteristics of the materials in a greater way during combustion synthesis. As a brief result of this research, it was found that the value of centrifugal acceleration affected the critical current density (Jc = 1.4 A/cm2) of the MgB2 composites, although it did not considerably impact the critical transition temperature of the MgB2 materials (remained at around 37.5–38 K).

Recent studies show that zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures have promising potential as an absorbing material. In order to improve the optoelectronic properties of the initial system, this paper considers the process of adsorbing multilayer graphene-like ZnO onto a Si (111) surface. The density of electron states for two- and three-layer graphene-like zinc oxide on the Si (111) surface was obtained using the Vienna ab-initio simulation package by the DFT method. A computer model of graphene-like Zinc oxide on a Si (111)-surface was created using the DFT+U approach. One-, two- and three-plane-thick graphene-zinc oxide were deposited on the substrate. An isolated cluster of Zn3O3 was also considered. The compatibility of g-ZnO with the S (100) substrate was tested, and the energetics of deposition were calculated. This study demonstrates that, regardless of the possible configuration of the adsorbing layers, the Si/ZnO structure remains stable at the interface. Calculations indicate that, in combination with lower formation energies, wurtzite-type structures turn out to be more stable and, compared to sphalerite-type structures, wurtzite-type structures form longer interlayers and shorter interplanar distances. It has been shown that during the deposition of the third layer, the growth of a wurtzite-type structure becomes exothermic. Thus, these findings suggest a predictable relationship between the application method and the number of layers, implying that the synthesis process can be modified. Consequently, we believe that such interfaces can be obtained through experimental synthesis.

The issue of crystallization of silicon oxide at low temperatures is a topical issue for the electronics of the future. Organosilicon oligomers and polymers are “ideal” sources for obtaining ultrapure silicon ceramics and silicon nanoparticles. This paper presents the results of the synthesis of highly dispersed silicon-carbon powder from an organohydrosiloxane oligomer and the method for increasing its crystallinity at low temperatures. The diffraction pattern of the resulting powder corresponds to the amorphous–crystalline state of the components in this material, as evidenced by two intense and broadened amorphous halos in the region of Bragg angles 2θ = 7–11° and 18–25°. The resulting silicon–carbon powder was subjected to electron irradiation (E = 10 MeV; D = 106–107 Gy). This paper presents the data on the changes in powder properties via IR-Fourier spectroscopy, X-ray phase analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Irradiation with fast electrons with an absorbed dose of 106 Gy leads to a slight crystallization of the amorphous SiO2 phase. An increase in the absorbed dose of fast electrons from D = 106 to D = 107 Gy leads to the opposite effect. An amorphization of silica is observed. This study showed the possibility of the crystallization of a silicon–carbon powder without a significant increase in temperature, acting only with electron irradiation. It is necessary to continue further research on expanding the boundaries of the optimal doses of absorbed radiation from fast electrons in order to achieve the maximum effect of the crystallization of silicon–carbon powder.

In the present paper, we report polymer composites based on phenolic resin filled with hexagonal boron nitride; hot compression molding coupled with solution-based mixing were used to manufacture the composites. The paper presents experimental results on the physical and physicochemical properties of the obtained composites: thermal stability in air and argon, dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent, active electrical resistance, thermal conductivity (mean and anisotropy), and mechanical strength. It is shown that the proposed technique of composite manufacturing, including the application of high-process pressures, makes it possible to obtain materials with high anisotropy of thermal conductivity, extremely high-filler content, and excellent dielectric properties, all of which are very important for prospective highly efficient lightweight heatsink elements for electronic devices. Experimental values of thermal conductivity and dielectric constant were analyzed using known mathematical models. Experimental values for thermal conductivities (up to 18.5 W·m−1·K−1) of composites at filler loadings of 65–85 vol.% are significantly higher than published data for bulk boron nitride/polymer composites.

Fiber-reinforced thermoplastics are an important construction material for lightweight applications. The increasing use of especially glass fiber-reinforced plastics leads to growing amounts of not recyclable composite materials, which is commonly disposed of by landfilling. Hence, there is a need for a recycling concept for glass-fiber-reinforced plastics that enables their complete reuse over many recycling cycles. In this paper, such a recycling concept is presented, which is based on the idea of melting the whole glass-fiber-reinforced component without prior size reduction. The fiber-reinforced melt will be pressed through a nozzle in order to achieve a strand with highly oriented fibers that can then be applied in new components via a tape-like laying process. The feasibility of the recycling concept is proved in this paper. Therefore, investigations on the reorientation of fibers in the melt by pressing through a rectangular nozzle have been carried out with different nozzle diameters, shear rates and melt temperatures. The investigations result in a stable process, which enables an increase in fiber orientation of about 37% up to a mean fiber orientation of 67% in the flow direction. These findings are independent of the initial fiber orientation.

In order to promote the research of green energy in the situation of increasingly serious environmental pollution, dielectric ceramic energy storage materials, which have the advantages of an extremely fast charge and discharge cycle, high durability, and have a broad use in new energy vehicles and pulse power, are being studied. However, the energy storage density of ordinary dielectric ceramic ferroelectric materials is low, so, in this paper, we have divided eight components based on BaTiO3 (BT). Through the traditional solid phase sintering method, AB positions were replaced with various elements of different proportions to improve their energy storage density and the energy storage efficiency of BT-based ferroelectric materials. In this paper, we studied the results of XRD, Raman, ferroelectric, dielectric, and impedance tests of doped samples, and the best components were determined. The (1−x)BT−xBi(Mg1/3Zn1/3Ta1/6Nb1/6)O3 series of ceramics are made by the incorporation of five elements, Bi3+, Mg2+, Zn2+, Ta5+, and Nb5+. With the rising electric hysteresis loop of the doping amount x thin, the saturation polarization strength and residual polarization strength decrease, and the energy storage density rises first and then decreases. The dielectric characteristic after x = 0.08 showed a flat dielectric peak, indicating that the ferroelectric relaxation had been formed. The energy storage density and efficiency of the best component x = 0.12 reached 1.75 J/cm3 and 75%, respectively, and the Curie temperature was about −20 °C, so it has the potential to be used at room temperature.

Recently, 3D printing technology has become more popular in the field of construction. For the extrusion-based 3D concrete printing (3DCP) process, the cementitious material needs to be strong and flowable enough to ensure buildability and pumpability. Nanostructured silica, a kind of additive, has been used to modify the 3DCP concrete to meet these requests. However, most previous studies focused on the effect of nanostructured silica on rheological properties and failed to link the obtained rheological properties of nanostructured-silica-modified cementitious materials to the performance in 3D printing. In this paper, the 3DCP mixture based on premix cement, river sand, silica fume, and water was modified by different dosages of nanostructured silica (from 0.25% to 1.00% by the total weight of the 3DCP mixture). The effects of nanostructured silica on the rheological, hydration, printing, and microstructural properties were determined by rheological tests, stress growth tests, setting time tests, printing tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests, respectively. This paper revealed that the nanostructured silica has a positive effect on 3DCP buildability but negatively affects the printing quality, which fits the effect of nanostructured silica on the rheological properties. Hence, the determined rheological properties can qualitatively evaluate the printing performance of nanostructured-silica-modified cementitious materials.

Precise meanings of thermophysical processes taking place in air gaps have decisive importance in composite cladding structure systems’ calculation and modeling. The climatic load conditions in Kazakhstan can significantly affect the microclimate of premises in general. In this work, a review study is carried out to obtain the relevant scientific literature on enclosing structures with air gaps under various climatic conditions. The review mainly covers research institutes from Sweden, Norway, France, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and China. On the issue of the air gap parameter’s influence on thermophysical processes, 16 papers were analyzed, and on the issue of air infiltration, 12 papers were analyzed. However, the review shows a lack of research in this area under various climatic conditions. At the same time, experience has shown that the principle of multilayer protection from climatic influences creates a favorable microclimate in buildings, but due to a possible temperature drop, wall structures made of composite building materials can be quite favorable under some conditions, and under others they may be less favorable. Therefore, working out a new energy-saving design with air gaps for climatic conditions with large temperature fluctuations during summer and winter is an urgent task.

Due to the unique properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the electrical and thermal conductivity of CNT-modified polymeric composites (CNTMPCs) can be manipulated and depend on several factors. There are many factors that affect the thermal and electrical conductivity of CNTs and CNTMPCs, such as chirality, length, type of CNTs, fabrication, surface treatment, matrix and interfacial interaction between the matrix and reinforcement (CNTs). This paper reviews the research on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the effects of some factors affecting the thermal and electrical conductivity of CNTs and CNTMPCs. First, the chirality dependence of the thermal and electrical conductivity of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was analyzed. The effect of chirality on the conductivity of short-length CNTs is greater than that of long-length CNTs, and the larger the chiral angle, the greater the conductivity of the CNTs. Furthermore, the thermal and electrical conductivity of the zigzag CNTs is smaller than that of the armchair one. Therefore, as the tube aspect ratio becomes longer and conductivity increases, while the effect of chirality on the conductivity decreases. In addition, hydrogen bonding affects the electrical and thermal conductivity of the CNTMPCs. The modeling of SWNTs shows that the thermal and electrical conductivity increases significantly with increasing overlap length. MD simulations can be effectively used to design highly conductive CNTMPCs with appropriated thermal and electrical properties. Since there are too many factors affecting the thermal and electrical conductivity of CNTMPCs, this paper only reviews the effects of limited factors on the thermal and electrical conductivity of CNTs and CNTMPCs based on MD simulations, and further detailed studies are required.

The conventional manufacturing chain for technical ceramics is too expensive for the production of small series or unique parts with complex designs. Hybrid machines that combine additive and subtractive processes can be an interesting solution to overcome this technology lock-in. However, despite the great interest in hybrid machines for metallic parts, there is a lack of data in the literature when it comes to ceramics. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to closing this gap. It is the first to evaluate the achievable geometrical tolerances according to ISO 2768-2 as well as the surface textures of composite zirconia parts shaped sequentially by pellet additive manufacturing (PAM, from ceramic injection molding feedstock) and finish milling. The green parts were then debinded and sintered to analyze the influence of these steps. Compared to the initial green parts, the sintered parts exhibited shiny and smooth surfaces with sharp edges. Flatness, parallelism and perpendicularity all achieved an H (fine) class, while the surface textures were significantly improved, resulting in arithmetic roughness (Ra) below 1.6 µm.

The goal of this review is to present a wide range of hybrid formulations and composites containing calcium orthophosphates (abbreviated as CaPO4) that are suitable for use in biomedical applications and currently on the market. The bioactive, biocompatible, and osteoconductive properties of various CaPO4-based formulations make them valuable in the rapidly developing field of biomedical research, both in vitro and in vivo. Due to the brittleness of CaPO4, it is essential to combine the desired osteologic properties of ceramic CaPO4 with those of other compounds to create novel, multifunctional bone graft biomaterials. Consequently, this analysis offers a thorough overview of the hybrid formulations and CaPO4-based composites that are currently known. To do this, a comprehensive search of the literature on the subject was carried out in all significant databases to extract pertinent papers. There have been many formulations found with different material compositions, production methods, structural and bioactive features, and in vitro and in vivo properties. When these formulations contain additional biofunctional ingredients, such as drugs, proteins, enzymes, or antibacterial agents, they offer improved biomedical applications. Moreover, a lot of these formulations allow cell loading and promote the development of smart formulations based on CaPO4. This evaluation also discusses basic problems and scientific difficulties that call for more investigation and advancements. It also indicates perspectives for the future.

Biocharcoal (BioC), a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable material can be derived from various organic sources including agricultural waste. However, to date, complex chemical treatments using harsh solvents or physical processes at elevated temperatures have been used to activate and enhance the functional groups of biochar. In this paper, we propose a novel easy and cost-effective activation method based on electrochemical cycling in buffer solutions to enhance the electrochemical performance of biocharcoal derived from almond shells (AS-BioC). The novel electrochemical activation method enhanced the functional groups and porosity on the surface of AS-BioC, as confirmed by microscopic, spectroscopic characterizations. Electrochemical characterization indicated an increase in the conductivity and surface area. A modified SPCE with activated AS-BioC (A.AS-BioC/SPCE), shows enhanced electrochemical performance towards oxidation and reduction of nitrite and paraxon ethyl pesticide, respectively. For both target analytes, the activated electrode demonstrates high electrocatalytic activity and achieves a very LOD of 0.38 µM for nitrite and 1.35 nM for ethyl paraxon with a broad linear range. The sensor was validated in real samples for both contaminants. Overall, the research demonstrates an innovative technique to improve the performance of AS-BioC to use as a modifier material for electrochemical sensors.

Vinyl esters are increasingly being used as the matrix polymer in fibre-reinforced composites for demanding large applications which experience long-term exposure to moist and wet conditions. This paper presents the results of a study of ageing due to moisture absorption in vinyl ester polymer and glass fibre–vinyl ester laminates. The moisture uptake kinetics of the two neat VE polymers, cured at different conditions, and their glass-reinforced composites has been characterised by gravimetric methods. These studies have been carried out using submersion in water at 23 °C and 50 °C and exposure to high relative humidity moisture conditions at room temperature. A dynamic mechanical analysis characterisation of the glass transition temperatures of both the aged matrix and the composite is also presented.

The current paper reports on the quantification of the effect of magnetic fields on the mechanical performance of ferromagnetic nanocomposites in situ during basic standard tensile testing. The research investigates altering the basic mechanical properties (modulus and strength) via the application of a contact-less magnetic field as a primary attempt for a future composites strengthening mechanism. The nanocomposite specimens were fabricated using filament-based 3D printing and were comprised of ferromagnetic nanoparticle-embedded thermoplastic polymers. The nanoparticles were iron particles dispersed at 21 wt.% (10.2 Vol.%) inside a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer, characterised utilising optical microscopy and 3D X-ray computed tomography. The magnetic field was stationary and produced using permanent neodymium round-shaped magnets available at two field strengths below 1 Tesla. The 3D printing was a MakerBot Replicator machine operating based upon a fused deposition method, which utilised 1.75 mm-diameter filaments made of iron particle-based PLA composites. The magnetic field-equipped tensile tests were accompanied by a real-time digital image correlation technique for localized strain measurements across the specimens at a 10-micron pixel resolution. It was observed that the lateral magnetic field induces a slight Poisson effect on the development of extrinsic strain across the length of the tensile specimens. However, the effect reasonably interferes with the evolution of strain fields via the introduction of localised compressive strains attributed to accumulated magnetic polarisation at the magnetic particles on an extrinsic scale. The theory overestimated the moduli by a factor of approximately 3.1. To enhance the accuracy of its solutions for 3D-printed specimens, it is necessary to incorporate pore considerations into the theoretical derivations. Additionally, a modest 10% increase in ultimate tensile strength was observed during tensile loading. This finding suggests that field-assisted strengthening can be effective for as-received 3D-printed magnetic composites in their solidified state, provided that the material and field are optimally designed and implemented. This approach could propose a viable method for remote field tailoring to strengthen the material by mitigating defects induced during the 3D printing process.

Biochar, an organic, porous, and carbon-rich material originating from biomass via pyrolysis, showcases compelling attributes and intrinsic performances. Its appeal as a reinforcement material for biocomposites, as well as its auspicious electrical properties, has gained more attention, and makes biochar a versatile candidate for applications ranging from energy storage to catalytic devices. This scientific review undertakes a comprehensive exploration of biochar, spanning production methodologies, physicochemical intricacies, and critical process parameters. The focus of this paper extends to optimization strategies for biochar properties tailored to specific applications, with a dedicated inquiry into diverse production methods and activation strategies. This review’s second phase delves into a meticulous analysis of key properties within biochar-based composites, emphasizing limitations and unique performance characteristics crucial for diverse applications. By synthesizing a substantial body of research, this review aims to catalyze future investigations by pinpointing areas that demand attention in upcoming experiments, ultimately emphasizing the profound potential of biochar-based materials across technical and scientific domains.

Recently, tissue engineering has been revolutionised by the development of 3D-printed scaffolds, which allow one to construct a precise architecture with tailored properties. In this study, three different composite materials were synthesised using a combination of polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and hydroxyapatite (HA) in varying weight percentages. Morphological properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy showing a uniform distribution of HA particles throughout the matrix, indicating good compatibility between the materials. Furthermore, the printed scaffolds were tested under pressure using a load cell to examine mechanical strength. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed favorable dispersion, biological compatibility together with enhanced bioactivity within the PHB/PHA/PLA/HA composite matrixes. Thus, this paper demonstrates the successful design and implementation of these composite structures for tissue-engineering applications and highlights the effective development of biocompatible scaffold designs with improved functionality.

Softwood is widely employed in construction and faces high demand. Australia is grappling with substantial timber scarcity, specifically related to radiata pine, which is the dominant structural timber in the construction sector. However, Australia has a significant hardwood population, which can be utilized to reduce the high demand for radiata pine. This paper aims to investigate the bond properties of both Australian softwood (radiata pine) and hardwood (shining gum). It also discusses the potential to combine softwood and hardwood in glue or cross-laminated timber by evaluating the bond properties of the radiata pine–shining gum interface. For hardwood, the effect of primer is also investigated to determine its efficacy in improving failure mode, bond strength, and stiffness. Lastly, both glulam and cross-laminated timber bonding scenarios are simulated for bond testing by examining the effect of relative fibre orientation on the bond properties of the aforementioned species individually and in combination. Instead of conventional block shear testing, which is predominantly used for same-species bond testing, push-out testing is adopted in this study. However, a comparison with block shear testing is also made in this article. The results indicated that the use of primer on hardwood reduced the inconsistencies in the bond properties and improved wood-side failure rates. It was also concluded that the effect of fibre orientation in a CLT scenario with combined hardwood and softwood failure modes can vary significantly, which leads to a higher standard deviation in the results. Nevertheless, this study outlines the challenges and opportunities for producing hardwood–softwood hybrid glue or cross-laminated timber.

Embedded sensor technologies have emerged as pivotal tools in redefining structural health monitoring (SHM) within composite materials, addressing a critical need in the composite structure industry. Composites, by their layered nature, are particularly vulnerable to internal delamination and micro-cracks from impacts, which can propagate and lead to catastrophic failures. Traditional inspection methods often fail to detect internal damage and these undetected damages can lead to reduced performance and potential system failures. Embedded sensors offer a solution capable of detecting a spectrum of damages, from barely visible impact damages (BVID) and subtle low-energy impacts to pronounced impact-related deformations, all in real-time. Key sensors, such as Piezoelectric transducers (PZTs), Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), and other potential sensors, have been discussed as potential detection techniques in this review. This review discusses a comprehensive picture of the progress and current scenario of different embedded sensors for SHM of composite structures. The growth of embedded sensor technologies, current limitations, and future requirements focusing on sensor materials have been discussed in this review. Finally, challenges and opportunities for the development of a sustainable SHM system have been discussed in this paper.

The use of Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) systems is an innovative method for strengthening structures, particularly masonry, while addressing environmental and economic concerns. Despite their widespread use, characterizing FRCM composites poses challenges due to their complex mechanical behavior and considerable variability in properties. The available standardized testing methods exhibit some inconsistencies, underscoring the need for reliable characterization procedures. This paper presents an experimental study on the bond behavior between FRCM materials and calcarenite stone using a non-standard setup for double shear bond tests. Different FRCM systems are considered, varying the matrix composition and fabric nature. The experimental results are evaluated in terms of maximum stress, slip and data dispersion, alongside comparisons with double shear tests on larger samples and single-lap shear. These findings provide insights into how the mortar nature influences the stress-slip curves, strength, ductility and failure modes. The experimental study demonstrates the repeatability and robustness, particularly in terms of peak strength, of the non-standard setup configuration utilized in the study. The study highlights the importance of reliable characterization procedures for FRCM materials, especially in bond behavior assessments, emphasizing the need for further research to enhance our understanding of their application in structural reinforcement.

Natural biological nanocomposites, like nacre, demonstrate extraordinary fracture toughness, surpassing their base materials, attributed to their intricate staggered hierarchical architectures integrating hard and soft phases. The enhancement of toughness in these composites is often linked to the crack-deflection mechanism. Leveraging the core design principles that enhance durability, resilience, and robustness in organic materials, this paper describes the use of computational modeling and simulation to perform a three-point bending test on a 3D staggered nanocomposite intentionally crafted to mimic the detailed microstructure of nacre. We adopted a previously proposed interfacial zone model that conceptualizes the “relatively soft” layer as an interface between the “hard” mineral tablets and the microstructure’s interlayer spaces to examine how the microstructure and interface characteristics affect the mechanical responses and failure mechanisms. By comparing the model’s predictions with experimental data on natural nacre, the simulations unveil the mechanisms of tablet separation through adjacent layer sliding and crack deflection across interfacial zones. This study offers a robust numerical method for investigating the fracture toughening mechanisms and damage evolution and contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplays within biomimetic materials.

This paper develops a thermoelectric (TE)–piezoelectric (PE) hybrid structure with the PE layer acting as both a support membrane and a sensor for the TE film for microelectronics applications. The TE and PE layers are assumed to be perfectly bonded mechanically and thermally but electrically shielded and insulated with each other. The thermo-electro-mechanical responses of the hybrid bilayer under the TE generator operation conditions are obtained, and the influence of the PE layer on the TE energy conversion efficiency is investigated. The numerical results for a Bi2Te3/PZT-5H bilayer structure show that large compressive stresses develop in both the PE and TE layers. With a decrease in the PE layer thickness, the magnitude of the maximum compressive stress in the PE layer increases whereas the maximum magnitude of the stress in the TE layer decreases. The numerical result of the TE energy conversion efficiency shows that increasing the PE layer thickness leads to lower energy conversion efficiencies. A nearly 40% reduction in the peak efficiency is observed with a PE layer of the same thickness as that of the TE layer. These results suggest that design of TE films with supporting/sensing membranes must consider both aspects of energy conversion efficiency and the thermomechanical reliability of both the TE and PE layers.

Graphene hybrid-filler polymer composites have emerged as prominent materials that revolutionize heavy industries. This review paper encapsulates an in-depth analysis of different influential factors, such as filler/graphene type, aspect ratios, dispersion methods, filler-matrix compatibility, fiber orientation, synergistic effects, different processing techniques, and post-curing conditions, which affect the processing and properties of graphene hybrid polymer composites, as well as their resultant applications. Additionally, it discusses the substantial role of graphene reinforcement with other fillers, such as carbon nanotubes, silica, nano-clays, and metal oxides, to produce functionalized hybrid polymer composites with synergistically enhanced tailored properties, offering solutions for heavy industries, including aerospace, automotive, electronics, and energy harvesting. This review concludes with some suggestions and an outlook on the future of these composite materials by emphasizing the need for continued research to fully optimize their potential.

This paper presents a novel ultrasonic-assisted electrodeposition process of Mn-doped NiCo2O4 onto a commercial nickel foam in a neutral electroplating bath (pH = 7.0) under an ultrasonic power of 1.2 V and 100 W. Different sample properties were studied based on their crystallinity through X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphology was studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photodegradation was studied through ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometry. Based on the XRD results, the dominant crystallite phase obtained was shown to be a pure single NiCo2O4 phase. The optical properties of the photocatalytic film showed a range of energy band gaps between 1.72 and 1.73 eV from the absorption spectrum. The surface hydroxyl groups on the catalytic surface of the Mn-doped NiCo2O4 thin films showed significant improvements in removing methyl red via photodegradation, achieving 88% degradation in 60 min, which was approximately 1.6 times higher than that of pure NiCo2O4 thin films. The maximum hydrogen rate of the composite films under 100 mW/cm2 illumination was 38 μmol/cm2 with a +3.5 V external potential. The electrochemical performance test also showed a high capacity retention rate (96% after 5000 charge–discharge cycles), high capacity (260 Fg−1), and low intrinsic resistance (0.8 Ω). This work concludes that the Mn-doped NiCo2O4 hybrid with oxygen-poor conditions (oxygen vacancies) is a promising composite electrode candidate for methyl red removal, hydrogen evolution, and high-performance hybrid supercapacitor applications.

This paper presents a numerical study on the dynamic response and impact mitigation capabilities of layered ceramic–polymer–metal (CPM) composites under plate impact loading, focusing on the layer sequence effect. The layered structure, comprising a ceramic for hardness and thermal resistance, a polymer for energy absorption, and a metal for strength and ductility, is analyzed to evaluate its effectiveness in mitigating the impact loading. The simulations employed the VUMAT subroutine of DSGZ material models within Abaqus/Explicit to accurately represent the mechanical behavior of the polymeric materials in the composites. The VUMAT implementation incorporates the explicit time integration scheme and the implicit radial return mapping algorithm. A safe-version Newton–Raphson method is applied for numerically solving the differential equations of the J2 plastic flow theory. Analysis of the simulation results reveals that specific layer configurations significantly influence wave propagation, leading to variations in energy absorption and stress distribution within the material. Notably, certain layer sequences, such as P-C-M and C-P-M, exhibit enhanced impact mitigation with a superior ability to dissipate and redirect the impact energy. This phenomenon is tied to the interactions between the material properties of the ceramic, polymer, and metal, emphasizing the necessity of precise material characterization and enhanced understanding of the layer sequencing effect for optimizing composite designs for impact mitigation. The integration of empirical data with simulation methods provides a comprehensive framework for optimizing composite designs in high-impact scenarios. In the general fields of materials science and impact engineering, the current research offers some guidance for practical applications, underscoring the need for detailed simulations to capture the high-strain-rate dynamic responses of multilayered composites.

The rapid growth of Natural Fiber Laminate (NFL) innovation is a direct response to environmental challenges, positioning these materials as superior alternatives to synthetic fiber composites. This paper delved into the outcomes of an extensive experimental study investigating the influence of sisal fiber (SLF), banana fiber (BF), and glass fiber (GF) on the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of concrete. The water absorption curves were established for sisal fiber concrete (SLFC), banana fiber concrete (BFC), and glass fiber concrete (GFC). Furthermore, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) observations were conducted to perform microanalysis and failure analysis of the tested specimens. The results revealed significant improvements in the concrete containing fibers compared to its counterpart in fiber-free concrete. For mixtures with a water-to-binder (W/B) ratio of 0.3, the most optimal mix (GF-30-135) showed improvements in compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strengths by 4.13%, 8.93%, and 10.10%, respectively. On the other hand, for W/B of 0.4, mix GF-30-135 showed improvements of 5.05%, 8.55%, and 11.60%, respectively. Furthermore, as the fiber content increased, microscopic analyses revealed a weakening of the bond between the fibers and the rest of the matrix, contributing to the deterioration of the mechanical properties.

This paper studies the behavior of S2-glass woven fabric reinforced polymer composite under low-velocity impact at 18–110 J energy. A macro-homogeneous finite element model for the prediction of their response is implemented, considering the non-linear material behavior and intralaminar and interlaminar failure modes for the prediction of impact damage. The model accurately predicted the permanent indentation caused by impact. By applying the Ramberg-Osgood formulation, different initial stiffness values are examined to assess the post-impact unloading response. This approach reveals the significant role of initial stiffness in inelastic strain accumulation and its consequent effect on permanent indentation depth. A higher initial stiffness correlates with increased inelastic strain, influencing the impactor rebound and resulting in greater permanent indentation. By accurately predicting permanent indentation, and damage accumulation for different impact energies, this study contributes to a better understanding of the impact behavior of composite materials, thereby promoting their wider application.

The choice of material, manufacturing process, and molding tool significantly affects the quality, environmental impact, and cost efficiency of composite components. Producing one-piece hollow profiles with smooth inner surfaces and undercuts presents major challenges for conventional mold concepts. There is yet no thorough review of shape-variable mandrels in composite manufacturing to be found in the literature. This paper provides an overview of research on shape memory polymers and other shape-variable materials used in tooling applications for composite manufacturing. This work covers shape memory, heat shrink, and other deformable tooling concepts that enable the production of one-piece Type V pressure vessels, air intake ducts, or curved struts and tubes. A systematic literature review in combination with a state-of-the-art open-source active learning tool ASReview is conducted. Fifteen relevant studies were identified. Research on shape-variable tooling is mainly conducted by three research groups in the USA and the PRC. The tooling is mostly made of unreinforced thermosets, especially styrene-based ones. Thermoplastic resins are less common, and reinforcements limit the usable elongation in the temporary shape. The shape variability is either a shape memory and/or a softening process, which, in all studies, is activated by heating. Release agents are widely used to ease demolding. No ecological or economical assessment of the manufacturing methods was conducted in the reviewed studies. Three fields for further research that could be identified are as follows: (1) thorough ecological end economical assessment of shape-variable mandrels in comparison with conventional tooling; (2) thermoplastic shape memory polymer mandrels; and (3) further investigation of simulation capabilities for shape memory mandrels.

The investigation of the in-plane shear behavior of prepreg is crucial for understanding the generation of wrinkles of preforms in advanced composite manufacturing processes, such as automated fiber placement and thermoforming. Despite this significance, there is currently no standardized test method for characterizing uncured unidirectional (UD) prepreg. This paper introduces a ±45° off-axis tensile test designed to assess the in-plane shear behavior of UD carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy prepreg (CF/epoxy). Digital image correlation (DIC) was employed to quantitatively track the strains in three dimensions and the shear angle evolution during the stretching process. The influences of the temperature and stretching rate on the in-plane shear behavior of the prepreg were further investigated. The results reveal that four shear characteristic zones and wrinkling behaviors are clearly distinguished. The actual in-plane shear angle is significantly lower than the theoretical value due to fiber constraints from both the in-plane and out-of-plane aspects. When the off-axis tensile displacement (d) is less than 15.6 mm, the ±45° specimens primarily exhibit macroscale in-plane shear behavior, induced by interlaminar interface shear between the +45° ply and −45° ply at the mesoscale. The shear angle increases linearly with the d. However, when d > 15.6 mm, fiber squeezing and wrinkling begin to occur. When d > 29 mm, the in-plane shear disappears in the completely sheared zone (A). The reduction in the resin viscosity of the CF/epoxy prepreg caused by increased temperature is identified as the primary factor in lowering the in-plane shear force resistance, followed by the effect of the increasing resin curing degree. Higher shear rates can lead to a substantial increase in shear forces, eventually causing cracking failure in the prepreg. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of the test method for predicting and extracting uncured prepreg in-plane shear behaviors and the strain-rate and temperature dependency of the material response.

Composite pressure vessels can be exposed to extreme loadings, for instance, impact loading, during manufacturing, maintenance, or their service lifetime. These kinds of loadings may provoke both visible and invisible levels of damage, e.g., fiber breakage matrix cracks and delamination and eventually may lead to catastrophic failures. Thus, the quantification and evaluation of such damages are of great importance. Considering the cost of relevant full-scale experiments, a numerical model can be a powerful tool for such a kind of study. This paper aims to provide a numerical study to investigate the capability of different modeling methods to predict delamination in composite vessels. In this study, various numerical modeling aspects, such as element types (solid and shell elements) and material parameters (such as interface properties), were considered to investigate delamination in a composite pressure vessel under low-velocity impact loading. Specifically, solid elements were used to model each layer of the composite pressure vessel, while, in another model, shell elements with composite layup were considered. Compared with the available experimental data from low-velocity impact tests described in the literature, the capability of these two models to predict both mechanical responses and failure phenomena is shown.
