The aim of the present study was to analyze the response to exposure to pollutants (trace elements and organic pollutants) using biomarkers (micronucleated cells and glutathione S-transferase and catalase activity) in uçá crab Ucides cordatus. The study was carried out at four sites: Cacha Prego (CP) and Ponta Grossa (PG), areas with low anthropic activity; and Ilha de Maré (IM) and Pitinga (PT), areas affected by industrial activity. At each site, soil and crab samples were collected to analyze the contents of potentially toxic elements (total concentration and chemical partitioning of trace elements), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Both total concentrations and geochemical fractions of Cu, Zn, and Ni in soils were significantly higher in IM. Likewise, higher reactive Pb contents were observed in mangroves both in IM and in PG. Values above quality limits were observed for organic pollutants (PAHs) in soils from CP and PT, while PCB contents were below the maximum permissible levels. Metals in crabs also showed spatial variations, with higher Cu concentrations in all tissues in IM and PT and higher Ni concentrations in hepatopancreas in PT during the dry season. PAH values in crabs did not show spatial variations; however, crustaceans with contents above maximum limits in their muscle tissue were found in CP. Crabs from the Baia de Todos Santos showed different responses in biomarker expression, with higher enzymatic activity and greater numbers of micronucleated cells in crabs from IM, suggesting oxidative stress and genotoxicity in this mangrove forest. This study analyzed field and acclimatized (7 days) mangrove Ucides cordatus crabs from polluted and unpolluted environments to compare their HSP70 levels. The animals were cryo-anesthetized and dissected. Gills (anterior and posterior) and hepatopancreas were collected to evaluate total proteins and HSP70 levels using ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) method. The acclimatized animals from polluted environments showed higher HSP70 levels in the hepatopancreas than field animals. Results showed higher HSP70 levels in laboratory animals from the polluted environment than in field animals in the posterior gills. The regulation to decrease the damage caused by the environment and the acclimatization process may not be sufficient to stabilize physiological responses, especially in animals from polluted environments. Intensive harvesting of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus provides subsistence for food and main or additional income to many inhabitants of mangrove areas in Northern Brazil. In order to better understand the spatial patterns of use of this natural resource as basis for sustainable resource-management, we used a combination of GPS-tracking, field observations, semi-structured interviews and participatory mapping with crab-collectors. We quantified daily working hours, traveling distance and time to, as well as collecting time inside, the patches where crabs are collected. Based on preliminary findings for three different types of transportation to the fishing grounds, we conclude that crab-collectors in our study area act in accordance with the central place optimal foraging concept in that they invest more time in traveling to areas with higher catch. We hold these findings will prove relevant for sustainably managing the use of mangrove crabs as natural resource. The parallel occurrence of different collecting-behaviours possibly releases pressure from crab stocks in the potentially depleting fishing grounds adjacent to villages, and thus, may render crab-collecting in these areas more sustainable. Detailed studies are needed to quantify the catch from different mangrove areas and to make these data useful for the sustainable management of natural resource-exploitation in mangroves. An abundant population of Ucides cordatus swamp crabs is present at Lameirão Ecological Station (Brazil), a tropical ecosystem man-made with discharges of domestic, industrial and agricultural pollutants. Concentrations of heavy metals in water, sediment and muscle tissues, gills, hepatopancreas and exoskeleton present in crustaceans were analyzed. The results showed variations in the concentrations of all metals according to precipitation, tide and physicochemical factors. This fact possibly influenced the results of bioconcentration (BFC > 1), indicating a tendency of bioaccumulation according to environmental conditions. We also found a high accumulation of metals in female specimens. However, regardless of gender, we found a reduction in metal concentrations in all tissues analyzed during the period of ecdysis. In this study, we highlight the ecological role of U. cordatus in mangrove ecosystems and its importance in transferring pollutants to the upper trophic levels of the mangrove community, and even to man. Although crustaceans are traditionally preserved in liquids (formaldehyde and/or ethyl alcohol), those substances tend to alter their morphological aspects. Glycerin, used in human anatomy, is considered a good substitute for formaldehyde, as it preserves animals in states similar to in vivo conditions. There are no records in the literature, however, concerning the use of glycerin for conserving invertebrates. The objective of this work was to elaborate and evaluate alternative techniques for conserving the crustacean Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763). Six fixatives (1, 3, 4 and 5% formaldehyde, 70% alcohol, and dietrich solution) and two controls (positive and negative) were tested, as well as the effects of freezing before fixation on the integrity of U. cordatus specimens. Our results were evaluated with respect to nine variables. The treatments that demonstrated the best aesthetic results were 4% formaldehyde and 70% ethyl alcohol. The freezing of the animals resulted in brittle organs in all treatments tested. The technique discussed here is extremely promising for the conservation of animals for educational purposes, as it produces preserved specimens that are aesthetically similar to their in vivo conditions. Seasonality and crab activity affects the nutrients and physicochemical parameters in mangrove soils, thus, affecting the emissions of greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxide (N2O). Climate change may intensify rainfall and/or enhance droughts, affecting mangroves and associated biota. Crabs are natural soil bioturbators responsible for soil aeration and turnover. We evaluated the effect of Ucides cordatus crab on N2O emissions from mangrove soils under a semiarid climate in Northeastern Brazil. Soil and gas samples were collected over the rainy and dry seasons in crab-naturally-bioturbated and crab-exclusion mangrove plots. We measured the soil's pH, redox potential, and the total contents of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. We found higher N2O emissions in the crab-exclusion sites compared to the bioturbated sites, as well as higher N2O emissions in the rainy season compared to the dry season. The fluxes of N2O (µg m−2 h−1) were 47.3 ± 9.7 and 8.9 ± 0.5 for the crab-exclusion sites, and 36.5 ± 7.8 and 4.5 ± 2.1 for the bioturbated sites (wet and dry seasons, respectively). The soil turning over by macrofauna led to lower N2O fluxes in natural crab-bioturbated areas, and seasonality was the environmental factor that contributed the most to the changes in N2O emissions. The field of nanotechnology had enormous developments, resulting in new methods for the controlled synthesis of a wide variety of nanoscale materials with unique properties. Efficient methods such as thermal decomposition for efficient size control have been developed in recent years for the synthesis of oleic acid (OA)-coated magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (MNP-OA). These nanostructures can be a source of pollution when emitted in the aquatic environment and could be accumulated by vulnerable marine species such as crustaceans. In this work, we synthesized and characterized MNP-OA of three different diameters (5, 8, and 12 nm) by thermal decomposition. These nanoparticles were remarkably stable after treatment with high affinity iron chelators (calcein, fluorescent desferrioxamine, and fluorescent apotransferrin); however, they displayed pro-oxidant activity after being challenged with ascorbate under two physiological buffers. Free or nanoparticle iron displayed low toxicity to four types of hepatopancreatic cells (E, R, F, and B) of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus; however, they were promptly bioavailable, posing the risk of ecosystem disruption due to the release of excess nutrients. The mangrove crab Ucides cordatus is a bioindicator of aquatic contamination. In this work, the iron availability and redox activity of saccharide-coated mineral iron supplements (for both human and veterinary use) and ferrocene derivatives in Saline Ucides Buffer (SUB) medium were assessed. The transport of these metallodrugs by four different hepatopancreatic cell types (embryonic (E), resorptive (R), fibrillar (F), and blister (B)) of U. cordatus were measured. Organic coated iron minerals (iron supplements) were stable against strong chelators (calcein and transferrin). Ascorbic acid efficiently mediated the release of iron only from ferrocene compounds, leading to redox-active species. Ferrous iron and iron supplements were efficient in loading iron to all hepatopancreatic cell types. In contrast, ferrocene derivatives were loaded only in F and B cell types. Acute exposition to the iron compounds resulted in cell viability of 70-95%, and to intracellular iron levels as high as 0.40 μmol L−1 depending upon the compound and the cell line. The easiness that iron from iron metallodrugs was loaded/transported into U. cordatus hepatopancreatic cells reinforces a cautionary approach to the widespread disposal and use of highly bioavailable iron species as far as the long-term environmental welfare is concerned. Ucides cordatus is a semi-terrestrial crab and key species endemic to mangrove areas of eastern Americas. In North-eastern Brazil this crab holds a major socio-economic function for artisanal fisheries, as in the São Francisco River Estuary (10°30′27″S 36°23′45″W). Nevertheless, decreases in this species’ stock have been reported since 2000, requiring assessments of the crab population for conservation and management purposes. This study aims at assessing the population status and the fishery potential of this species in the mangroves of this estuary and suggests strategies for its fishery and conservation, according to the guidelines of the National Management Plan for U. cordatus Sustainable Use. Six different sites established in 30 km2 of mangroves were sampled, with the density of U. cordatus burrows estimated to evaluate the population structure using the measure of burrow diameters. Results show that the crab mean burrow size was 56.82 (±12.2) mm and that the medium-size crabs (40–70 mm) are the most abundant. The total mean crab density was 1.2 crabs m−2, from which the density of crabs in commercial size (0.85 ± 0.55 crabs m−2) was significantly higher than those in non-commercial size (0.35 ± 0.21 burrow m−2). These mangroves showed a high potential for the crab fishery, with an immediate extractive potential (IEP) of 71.2% and future extractive potential (FEP) of 28.8%. Nevertheless, a lower crab density, probably due to high crab mortality, mangrove deforestation for shrimp farming and high fishery pressure, is a limiting factor for local fishery. We conclude that mangrove areas more appropriate for U. cordatus fishery (extractive areas) show higher mean crab size, IEP and density of commercial crabs, wherein a fixed exploitation rate or/and a fixed escapement rule should be considered. Exclusion areas, intended for the conservation, show lower values of these population parameters and higher FEP, wherein the fishery should be prohibited. These management strategies should also be considered in other Brazilian mangrove areas showing similar crab population structure, thus contributing to the National Management Plan for U. cordatus Sustainable Use. Many ecological processes are influenced by salinity. Burrowing crabs, abundant fauna of mangrove forests around the world, can facilitate sediment water fluxes, which may decrease the salinity in mangrove sediments. We investigated whether and how crab burrow density and secondary fine root biomass interact to drive sediment salinity during the dry season in a northern Brazilian mangrove forest. Areas with high density of Rhizophora mangle prop roots and areas free of such roots were compared. We found no correlation between burrow density and sediment salinity in areas with dense prop and fine roots, while crab density correlated negatively with sediment salinity in areas without prop roots, where fine root density was low. Hence, the strength of sediment desalination effects of crabs seems to be context dependent, and high root density of a salt-excluding mangrove species ( R. mangle) seems to counteract the crabs' effect. Our results complement those of a former study conducted in the same area during the rainy season, highlighting that the findings are independent from seasonality and should be considered when evaluating the overall ecological effects of crabs in mangrove ecosystems. Background: Brazilian mangrove forests are widely distributed along the coast and exploited by groups of people with customs and habits as diverse as the biology of the mangrove ecosystems. This study identifies different methods of extracting crabs that inhabit the mangrove belts; some of these activities, such as catching individual crabs by hand, are aimed at maintaining natural stocks of this species in Mucuri (south Bahia), Brazil. Methods: In the studied community, illegal hunting activities that violate Brazilian legislation limiting the use of tangle-netting in mangrove ecosystem were observed. Results: According to our observations, fishermen, to catch individual crabs, use the tangle-netting technique seeking to increase income and are from families that have no tradition of extraction. Conclusions: This analysis leads us to conclude that catchers from economically marginalised social groups enter mangroves for purposes of survival rather than for purposes of subsistence, because the catching by tangle-netting is a predatory technique. Tangle-netting technique increase caught but also increases their mortality rate. We emphasise that traditional catching methods are unique to Brazil and that manual capturing of crab should be preserved through public policies aimed at maintaining the crab population. The variation in five microsatellite loci was used to estimate the genetic structure and demographic parameters of the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763), based on 365 individuals from nine locations throughout the Brazilian coast. There was considerable variability in the studied fragments, with high values of expected heterozygosity and evidence for weak genetic structure between some of the samples and regions, despite vast geographical distances between then. FST values involving the Amapá sample were near zero, indicating that the estuary of the Rio Amazonas mouth does not represent a barrier to dispersal of this species. Environmental factors strongly affect mangrove crabs, and some factors modulate population structure and habitat partitioning during the crabs' life cycle. However, the effect of these environmental factors on habitat selection by mangrove crabs is still unknown. We evaluated habitat selection by the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus in mangrove forests with different degrees of predominance of Rhizophora mangle, Laguncularia racemosa or Avicennia schaueriana, two tidal flooding levels (less- and more-flooded), and two biological periods (breeding and non-breeding seasons). Sampling was conducted in four mangrove forests with different influences of these biotic and abiotic parameters. We used the data for sex ratio to explain environmental partitioning by this species. Females predominated in R. mangle mangroves, independently of the biological period (breeding or non-breeding seasons), and males predominated only in the less-flooded L. racemosa mangroves. The flooding level affected the sex ratio of U. cordatus, with a predominance of males in less-flooded mangroves, independently of the biological period; and a gender balance in the more-flooded mangroves only during the breeding season. Outside the breeding season, the largest specimens were recorded in the R. mangle mangroves, but in the breeding season, the largest crabs were recorded in the L. racemosa mangroves with a higher level of flooding. These results suggest that tree-species composition and tidal flooding level can have a significant effect on the habitat partitioning of sexes and sizes of the mangrove crab U. cordatus both during and outside the breeding season. Heterogeneity in the distribution of organisms occurs at a range of spatial scales, which may vary from few centimeters to hundreds of kilometers. The exclusion of small-scale variability from routine sampling designs may confound comparisons at larger scales and lead to inconsistent interpretation of data. Despite its ecological and social-economic importance, little is known about the spatial structure of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus in the southwest Atlantic. Previous studies have commonly compared densities at relatively broad scales, relying on alleged distribution patterns (e.g., mangroves of distinct composition and structure). We have assessed variability patterns of U. cordatus in mangroves of Paranaguá Bay at four levels of spatial hierarchy (10 s km, km, 10 s m and m) using a nested ANOVA and variance components measures. The potential role of sediment parameters, pneumatophore density, and organic matter content in regulating observed patterns was assessed by multiple regression models. Densities of total and non-commercial size crabs varied mostly at 10 s m to km scales. Densities of commercial size crabs differed at the scales of 10 s m and 10 s km. Variance components indicated that small-scale variation was the most important, contributing up to 70% of the crab density variability. Multiple regression models could not explain the observed variations. Processes driving differences in crab abundance were not related to the measured variables. Small-scale patchy distribution has direct implications to current management practices of U. cordatus. Future studies should consider processes operating at smaller scales, which are responsible for a complex mosaic of patches within previously described patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The gills contain essential cells for respiration and osmoregulation, whereas the hepatopancreas is the site of digestion, absorption, and nutrients storage. The aim of this work was to separate and characterize gill and hepatopancreatic cells of the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus. For gills, the methodology consisted of an enzymatic cellular dissociation using Trypsin at 0.5%, observation of cellular viability with Tripan Blue, and separation of cells using discontinuous sucrose gradient at concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. The hepatopancreatic cells were dissociated by magnetic stirring, with posterior separation by sucrose gradient at the same concentrations above. For gills, a high cellular viability was observed (92.5±2.1%), with hemocyte cells in 10% sucrose layer (57.99 ± 0.17%, * P < 0.05), principal cells in the 20% sucrose layer (57.33 ± 0.18, * P < 0.05), and thick cells and pillar cells in the 30% and 40% sucrose layers, respectively (39.54 ± 0.05%, * P < 0.05; and 41.81 ± 0.04%, * P < 0.05). The hepatopancreatic cells also showed good viability (79.22 ± 0.02%), with the observation of embryonic (E) cells in the 10% sucrose layer (67.87 ± 0.06%, ** P < 0.001), resorptive (R) and fibrillar (F) cells in the 20% and 30% sucrose layers (44.71 ± 0.06%, ** P < 0.001, and 43.25 ± 0.01%, * P < 0.05; respectively), and blister (B) cells in the 40% sucrose layer (63.09 ± 0.03%, ** P < 0.001). The results are a starting point for in vitro studies of heavy metal transport in isolated cells of the mangrove crab U. cordatus, subjected to contamination by metals in the mangrove habitat where they are found. In the northeast region of the Brazilian coast, a disease has been causing massive mortalities of populations of the mangrove land crab, Ucides cordatus (L.) since 1997. The clinical signs of this disease, which include lethargy and ataxia, led to the disease being termed Lethargic Crab Disease (LCD). Evidence from a variety of sources indicates that there is an association between LCD and a new species of black yeast, Exophiala cancerae de Hoog, Vicente, Najafzadeh, Badali, Seyedmousavi & Boeger. This study tests this putative correlation through in vivo experiments. Disease-free specimens of U. cordatus were experimentally infected with Exophiala cancerae (strain CBS 120420) isolate. During the 30-day experimental period, only a single death was observed within the control crabs. However, at the end of this period, crabs that were inoculated once or three-times with mycelial elements and hyphae of E. cancerae had a 60% and 50% mortality rates, respectively ( n = 6 and n = 5). These results support that the fungal agent is pathogenic and is the causative agent of LCD. Species-specific molecular markers confirm the presence of E. cancerae (strain CBS 120420) in recovered colonies and tissue samples from the infected animals. The experimentally infected crabs manifested signs (lethargy, ataxia and tetany) that were consistent to LCD-affected animals in the environment. These results fulfil Koch's postulates and the hypothesis that the tested strain of Exophiala cancerae is a causative agent of LCD is accepted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the present study was to characterize the external morphology and the orientation of burrows constructed by the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus. Data were obtained from two mangrove forests of similar vegetation dominance (Laguncularia racemosa) but differing in flooding heights. These mangroves were located near Barra de Icapara, Iguape City (SP), Brazil, (24°50′36″S–47°59′53′W). A total of 221 burrows were examined (120 on the high mangrove and 101 on the low mangrove). External morphology of the burrows was recorded by photographs for categorization and description. The directions of the burrow openings were recorded using a geological compass and the declivities of the ducts were measured with a clinometer. Females constructed 70.8% at Site A and 69.4% at Site B of the occupied burrows with the opening facing the margin of the river (P < 0.001), whilst males showed no significant difference in the burrow orientation (P > 0.05) at either site. In females, the tendency for burrow orientation possibly has a reproductive connotation as larval dispersal may be favoured and enhanced by the tides. Four groups of distinct tracks related to the morphotypes and developmental stages of U. cordatus were observed. No sediment constructions associated with the burrows were recorded for this species. Declivity of the burrows from juveniles was lower than from adults (P < 0.05), probably caused by the differential growth of the chelipeds in this species. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The leaf-removing decapod crab, Ucides cordatus plays a key role as ecological engineer in Brazilian mangrove ecosystems. We analyzed the spatial distribution of a specific population at two different scales to observe how individual behavior could alter spatial population structure. First, we conducted a spatial point pattern analysis of the burrow entrances and the Rhizophora mangle prop roots on the mangrove floor at a scale of few meters. Secondly, we analyzed at a large scale (10–100 m) the potential effects of surface elevation, light intensity, prop root coverage, species of neighboring tree ( R. mangle, Laguncularia racemosa, Avicennia germinans) and pneumatophore density on the size and number of burrow entrances. At the same large scale, we conducted an analysis of clustering of the crabs around the R. mangle trees. At small scale, the burrow entrances, although aggregated around the prop roots, showed a regularly spaced distribution (∼25 cm) signaling an intraspecific competition among the crabs. At large scale, crabs preferred to install their burrows at an intermediate level of surface elevation and prop root coverage, and in R. mangle-dominated areas. At the same kind of habitats, the largest burrows, and thus potentially the largest crabs, were found in higher number than on other habitats. The R. mangle-dominated areas preference was confirmed by an aggregating around R. mangle trees in R. mangle-dominated forest, but only of large individuals in L. racemosa-dominated forest. These observations lead us to the definition of a preferred habitat for U. cordatus. Competition leading to the small-scale regular patterns was proposed as an explanation for exclusion of smaller crabs from preferred habitats seen at large scale. Predation of zoeas by megalopae of Ucides cordatus is frequently observed in the laboratory during larval rearing, a phenomenon that could considerably reduce the output of larviculture. Experiments were carried out in the present study to assess how the survivorship of larvae at the end of the larviculture is influenced by cannibalism by megalopae on the larvae of earlier stages, as well as on other megalopae. In addition, tests were performed to assess whether the adoption of different feeding protocols can decrease cannibalism rates. Experiments were carried out in plastic vials containing ocean water (salinity 25 g L−1) under controlled environmental conditions (26 °C and 16:8 h LD photoperiod). An ensemble analysis of all the developmental stages indicated that zoeal mortality rates were significantly higher in the presence of megalopae, a result that is consistent with cannibalism by megalopae. However, separate analysis for each developmental stage indicated that only zoea IV, V and VI show reduced survivorship. No cannibalism was detected among megalopae. Food supplementation using Artemia sp. at a density of 6 nauplii mL−1 proved to be successful in reducing cannibalism rates, whereas supplementation at a lower density (0.3 nauplii mL−1) failed to show such an effect. Principle factors which influence mangrove leaf litter turnover, in particular the role of leaf-removing crabs, were evaluated in a riverine mangrove site near Bragança (Pará, North Brazil). Our special interest was focussed on the role of the leaf-removing crab Ucides cordatus. Leaf litter fluxes between the mangrove forest and the adjacent estuary were investigated by estimating the biomass and fate of leaf litter material and propagules. Vegetation is dominated by Rhizophora mangle, with Avicennia germinans trees, both up to 25 m high, found intermittently. During 1997, Rhizophora trees produced around 1.40 g DW m-2 d-1 of leave fall and 0.75 g DW m-2 d-1 of propagules. Leaf decomposition rates on the ground were about 0.06 g DW m-2 d-1, irrespective of species, habitat or site exposure. This amount accounts for <3% of total leaf fall. Average leaf litter biomass present on the ground was 0.01 g DW m-2 d-1. When the mangrove forest was flooded (on average 10 days per month) the quantity of leaf litter and propagules washed out with the spring tide was 10 and 17 times greater than during neap tide. Nevertheless, tidal export and decomposition together made up less than 39 percent of annual leaf litter fall. The bulk of the remaining amount is apparently removed by Ucides. Each crab consumed about 1.30 g DW of leaf litter material and propagules per day. Eleven polymorphic microsatellite loci were described for the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus, an important fishery resource on the Brazilian coast. The number of alleles observed at each locus varied between eight and 23. Observed and expected mean heterozygosities were 0.791 and 0.893 respectively. Amplification of all loci was highly successful, under the same polymerase chain reaction conditions. With the exception of P2D3, all loci adhered to the assumptions of the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and did not present deviations reflecting linkage disequilibrium. This study tested for the first time 147Sm/144Nd and 143Nd/144Nd ratios as tracers of rare earth element (REE) sources in semi-terrestrial organisms from a subtropical estuary affected by fertilizer industry activities. The isotopic composition of claw muscles and shells of male crabs (Ucides cordatus) were obtained by thermal ionization mass spectrometry, and provided contrasting signatures incorporated from the physical components by the biota. Our findings showed that crab shells had isotopic compositions similar to seawater, while the claw muscles incorporated the isotopic signature of sediments contaminated by fertilizer. The isotopic ratios (147Sm/144Nd and 143Nd/144Nd) proved that the anthropogenic source is transferring contaminants to the crabs, emerging as a reliable tool to diagnose REE pathway and source to the biota in impacted environments. The mangrove crab Ucides cordatus is widespread in the Brazilian coast, which has an important role in nutrient cycling. This species reproduces in summer and females carry eggs about a month, when they maintain contact with water and sediments. It remains unclear if trace metals can be absorbed or adsorbed by the eggs during development. The present study aims to investigate, for the first time, trace metal concentrations in ovigerous female tissues and eggs of U. cordatus in two areas with different metal pollution levels in the Southeastern Brazil. Samples were collected in two different mangroves, Guanabara Bay (GB) highly polluted environment and Paraíba do Sul River (PSR). In both populations, we observed significant increase of V, Cr, and Mn concentrations along eggs maturation. The higher metals averages were found in PSR population. This trend was reported since the 1990s and lower concentrations in GB marine organisms were attributed to reducing conditions, high organic load, and the presence of sulfide ions. These conditions restrict the bioavailability of metals in the bay, with exception of Mn. No significant differences were observed in gills and muscles. In both populations of the present study, V, Zn, As, and Pb were higher in eggs of initial stage, whereas Mn, Ni, Cu, and Cd were higher in hepatopancreas. Beside this, V, Cr, Mn, As, and Pb showed an increase concerning egg development. Thus, V, As, and Pb in eggs come from two sources previous discussed: females and environment. Zinc came mainly from females due to essential function. Those new information should be considered as one of the mechanisms of trace metal transfer to the trophic chain, between benthonic and pelagic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
