Indacaterol, a β2 agonist prescribed for long-term management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. In this study the first MISPE cartridges was developed using indacaterol as a template for its selective extraction from rat lung tissues, enabling precise pharmacokinetic evaluation at the drug's site of action. A molecular imprinting polymer was synthesized using indacaterol as a template, methacrylic acid as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker with a molar ratio (1: 4: 20). The polymer was characterized by a high binding capacity of 9840 ± 0.86 and high selectivity with an imprinting factor of 4.53 ± 0.12. The synthesized polymer was utilized as a sorbent in solid-phase extraction to purify and extract indacaterol from lung tissue matrix. The optimum molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) conditions were 20.0 mg of molecular imprinting polymer and non-imprinting polymer, acetonitrile as the loading solvent, acetonitrile: water (20: 80; by volume) as the washing solvent, and methanol: acetic acid (90: 10; by volume) as the eluting solvent. A pharmacokinetic study was performed for indacaterol in rat lungs using the synthesized and optimized MISPE cartridge as a tool for sample purification. These parameters were determined in the lung tissues of rats emphasizing the local exposure of indacaterol to its target organ. The Cmax and Tmax were 51.020 ± 2.810 µg mL− 1 and 0.083 ± 0.001 h, respectively. The AUC 0−24 and AUC0 − inf were 175.920 ± 1.053 and 542.000 ± 5.245 µg h mL− 1, respectively. The elimination rate constant was 0.014 ± 0.00012 h− 1 and the half-life time was 48.510 ± 0.012 h. This study successfully developed and optimized MISPE cartridges using indacaterol as a template, enabling precise pharmacokinetic evaluation in rat lung tissues. Digital light processing (DLP) 3DP, commercial acrylate-based photocurable resins, and thermally expandable microspheres-incorporated flexible photocurable resins were employed to fabricate an SPE column with a thermally expanded monolithic foam for extracting Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb ions prior to the determination using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. After optimization of the thermally activated foaming, the design and fabrication of the SPE column, and the automatic analytical system, the DLP 3D-printed SPE column with the thermally expanded monolithic foam extracted the metal ions with up to 14.8-fold enhancement (relative to that without incorporating the microspheres), with absolute extraction efficiencies all higher than 95.6%, and method detection limits in the range from 0.5 to 5.2 ng L–1. We validated the reliability and applicability of this method by determination of the metal ions in several reference materials (CASS-4, SLRS-5, 1643f, and Seronorm Trace Elements Urine L-2) and spiked seawater, river water, ground water, and human urine samples. The results illustrated that to incorporate the thermally expandable microspheres into the photocurable resins with a post-printing heating treatment enabled the DLP 3D-printed thermally expanded monolithic foam to substantially improve the extraction of the metal ions, thereby extending the applicability of SPE devices fabricated by vat photopolymerization 3DP techniques. Background: Wastewater can contain a complex mixture of organic micropollutants, with both chemical analysis and effect-based methods needed to identify relevant micropollutants and detect mixture effects. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is commonly used to enrich micropollutants prior to analysis. While the recovery and stability of individual micropollutants by SPE has been well studied, few studies have optimized SPE for effect-based methods. The aim of the current study was to develop and evaluate two standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the enrichment of micropollutants in preparation for chemical analysis and bioanalysis, one covering a broad range of chemicals and the other selective for estrogenic chemicals. Results: Pristine surface water spiked with > 600 micropollutants was used to develop a generic extraction method for micropollutants with a wide range of physiochemical properties, while water spiked with estrogenic chemicals was used to identify a selective extraction method. Three different SPE sorbents were tested, with recoveries of individual chemicals and effect in assays indicative of mutagenicity, estrogenic activity, and fish embryo toxicity assessed. The sorbent HRX at pH 7 was selected for the generic extraction method as it showed the best recovery of both individual chemicals and effect in the bioassays. The sorbent HLB at pH 3 showed optimal recovery of estrogenic chemicals and estrogenic activity. The two optimal SPE methods were applied to spiked and unspiked wastewater effluents, with the concentrations of detected chemicals and observed effects similar to those of previous studies. The long-term storage of both extracts and SPE cartridges for estrogens and estrogenic activity after extraction with the HRX and HLB methods were evaluated, with estrogenic effectiveness close to 100% after 112 days when HLB was used. Conclusions: HRX is recommended for generic extraction, while HLB is optimal for the selective extraction of estrogenic micropollutants. However, if a laboratory only wants to use a single SPE sorbent, HLB can be used for both generic and selective extraction as it yielded similar chemical and effect recovery as HRX for a wide range of micropollutants. In this study, amino-modified micro-mesoporous silica (NH2-MMS) with hierarchical pores was prepared by modifying micro-mesoporous silica ZSM-5 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and used as an adsorbent in solid-phase extraction to analyze free fatty acids (FFAs) in krill oil during storage for an initial time. The Brunner Emmet Teller adsorption experiment and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that NH2-MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized. The adsorption experiments, especially static adsorption, indicate that the absorption ability of the prepared NH2-MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, toward FFAs was better than that of traditional amino-modified mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with a mesoporous structure at all temperature and concentrations. Fairly low limits of detection (0.06–0.15 μg g−1), acceptable recoveries (85.16–94.31%), and precision (0.08–5.26%) were attained under ideal circumstances. Moreover, NH2-MMS has the advantages of easy preparation and being environmentally friendly. A novel doxorubicin hydrochloride liposome injection was prepared to reduce toxicity and side effects, as well as extend plasma half-life in the treatment of breast cancer. In this study, a rapid and sensitive bioanalytical method was developed and validated to characterize the pharmacokinetic profile of total and free doxorubicin in plasma of 3 Chinese patients after intravenous infusion of this injection. Plasma samples were prepared by protein precipitation for the determination of total doxorubicin, while solid phase extraction was used to determine free doxorubicin. After plasma sample pre-treatment, total and free concentrations were quantified individually using a validated LC-MS/MS method. The calibration curves were found to be linear in the range of 0.20–500.0 ng mL−1 for total doxorubicin and in the range of 1.00–1,000 ng mL−1 for free doxorubicin. The free concentrations in plasma were only one sixth to one quarter of the total levels. Liposomal doxorubicin had a longer apparent half-life (>50 h) than the non-targeted drug (<10 h) reported in the reference. and a lower volume of distribution. This novel injectable formulation steadily released free doxorubicin from liposomes over a long period of time to reduce cardiac toxicity and side effects, while ensuring a clinical curative effect. A simple, fast, and low-cost pre-concentration methodology based on the application of solid-phase extraction coupled to layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and capillary electrophoresis was developed for the determination of naproxen (NPX), diclofenac (DFC), and ibuprofen (IBP) in environmental sample waters. A systematic study of the LDH composition was designed, including the effects of interlayer anions (NO3−, Cl−, CO32−, BenO−, and SDS−) and the effect of molar ratio (Mg:Al). The optimal composition of MgAl/Cl−-LDH (Mg:Al; 1.5:1.0) was coupled to an SPE system: pH (neutral pH), LDH amount (15 mg), and extraction capacity ranged from 79.71 to 83.11% for the three anti-inflammatory non-steroidal agents analyzed. A recovery rate of up to 80.87% was obtained when 0.01 M chloride acid in methanol was used as the eluent and 50 mL of sample was used. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the calibration curve ranges from 18.02 to 200 μg L−1, with limits of detection ranging from 6.03 to 18.02 μg L−1 for the three NSAIDs. The precision of the methodology was evaluated in terms of inter- and intra-day repeatability, with %RSD < 10% in all cases. The proposed method was applied to analyze environmental water samples (bottle, tap, cistern, well, and river water samples). The global rise of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) poses challenges for their analysis in biological matrices due to their complex chemistries and short market lifespan. A comparative study for the simultaneous extraction, separation, and detection of 19 NPSs was conducted. Six solid-phase extraction (SPE) methods and one supported liquid extraction method (SLE) were compared for the extraction of analytes from blood, serum, plasma, and urine. Comparisons of four derivatization agents were conducted, at four temperatures and two incubation times. Extraction methods were assessed by precision, sensitivity, and extraction efficiency. Derivatizing agents were assessed on their selectivity and sensitivity, and a three-way ANOVA was conducted to determine statistical significance. CSDAU SPE cartridges were shown to be the most efficient when extracting analytes from blood, serum, and plasma, whereas Xcel I cartridges performed the strongest when extracting analytes from urine. SPE extraction efficiencies, when utilizing the best-performing cartridges, ranged from 49 to 119%. SLE successfully extracted all analytes from all matrices (ranging from 22 to 120%). Pentafluoropropionic anhydride: ethyl acetate was the most successful derivatizing agent, allowing all analytes to be detected, with the highest peak area responses and more unique spectra. The aim of this study was to develop a high‐performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of 6‐cyanodopamine, 6‐nitrodopamine, 6‐nitrodopa, 6‐nitroadrenaline and 6‐bromodopamine in human plasma samples. Strata‐X 33 μm solid‐phase extraction cartridges were used for the extraction of the catecholamines from human plasma samples. The catecholamines were separated in a 150 × 3 mm Shim‐pack GIST C18‐AQ column with 3 μm particle size, placed in an oven at 40°C and perfused with 82% mobile phase A (acetonitrile–H2O; 90:10, v/v) + 0.4% acetic acid and 18% mobile phase B (deionized H2O) + 0.2% formic acid at a flow rate of 340 μl/min in isocratic mode. The injected volume was 4 μl and the run lasted 4 min. The method was linear from 0.1 to 20 ng/ml and the lower limit of quantification was 0.1 ng/ml for all analytes. The method was applied to evaluate the plasma levels of catecholamines in plasma of patients with chronic kidney disease and allowed the detection for the first time of circulating levels of the novel catecholamines 6‐bromodopamine and 6‐cyanodopamine. For the first time, a highly permeable nanoporous carbon derived from melamine-based polybenzoxazine (NPC-PBZ-m) was used as the solid-phase extraction sorbent for trace analysis of atrazine (ATZ) herbicide in environmental water samples as a pre-treatment to enhance detection for high-performance liquid chromatography. Extraction performance was investigated using an agricultural field matrix-water sample. The parameters affecting the solid-phase extraction efficiency were carefully investigated. The optimisation conditions were determined as 200.0 mg of sorbent with an adsorption flow rate of 10.0 mL min−1, an elution flow rate of 1.0 mL min−1, and an elution volume of 3.0 mL. Moreover, it was not necessary to adjust the pH of the sample. Under these optimised extraction conditions, good linearity between 5.00 and 30.0 µg L−1 was achieved along with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.25 µg L−1 and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 3.79 µg L−1. Furthermore, the reusability of the NPC-PBZ-m column was found up to 8 cycles making it a new cost-effective material for herbicide enrichment. Finally, this developed method was successfully applied to analyse ATZ in water samples from rice fields, fish farms, and natural canal water, with 98–117% relative recoveries. UV spectrophotometric determination of salicylic acid in several multicomponent drugs using an ethylcellulose-based sorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE) for sample preparation was shown to be selective. Selective binding of the analyte to sorbent active sites and stepwise elution successively with purified water and NaOH solution (0.1 M) during SPE eliminated interference of other active pharmaceutical ingredients of multicomponent drugs during identification and quantitation of salicylic acid by UV spectrophotometry. Use of the ethylcellulose sorbent made it possible to improve the metrological parameters and decrease systematic error of the quantitative procedure by an average of 47%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work focuses on the development of a hybrid material based on SBA-15 silica with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), using spiramycin (SPI) as a template, for use as sorbent in solid-phase extraction (SPE). Characterization techniques such as nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption isotherms, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the structure and properties of the SBA-15@MIP-SPI material. SPE conditions using SBA-15@MIP-SPI as sorbent were optimized, which allowed us to demonstrate the high selectivity and adsorption capacity of SPI on the synthesized material. The best conditions were 50 mg of sorbent, loading with 1 mL of standard solution or sample of cow milk previously extracted in acetonitrile and eluting with 3 mL of methanol with 1% acetic acid. After the optimization process, the material demonstrated recovery percentages of 81 ± 3% in SPI standard solutions and showed its potential in cow milk samples (71 ± 6%). The novelty of the research consists of the combination of MIPs with SBA-15, which could offer important advantages in terms of specific surface area and porous structure, thus improving performance and reducing the amount of sorbent compared to other traditional methods. To determine the paclitaxel-related substances in a paclitaxel injection (albumin-bound), it is necessary to remove human blood albumin from the sample via solid-phase extraction and subsequently perform high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The pre-processing operation is complicated, the duration of analysis is long, and much human power and material resources are needed in the sample testing process. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a quick two-dimensional liquid chromatography method that requires less consumables and possesses high sensitivity. Samples were directly injected into one-dimensional solid-phase extraction columns to remove human blood albumin. Paclitaxel and its related substances in the solid-phase extraction columns were then eluted into two-dimensional analytical columns through valve switching technology. The sample pretreatment step can be omitted in this method, which allows for the analysis of paclitaxel and its related substances to be completed more quickly, within only 15 min, under the developed two-dimensional elution conditions. The established method had good linearity (R2 = 0.9994), limit of detection (0.25 μg·mL−1), limit of quantification (0.5 μg·mL−1), precision (RSD = 0.5%), and accuracy (102.53–107.97%). In this work, we test metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents in the solid-phase extraction (SPE) technique to determine chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and their related compounds in water samples. During this study, we used 13 target compounds to test the selectivity of MOFs thoroughly. Three MOFs were used: MIL-100(Fe), ZIF-8(Zn), and UiO-66(Zr). The obtained materials were characterized using FT-IR/ATR, SEM, and XRD. CWA's and related compounds were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The effect of the type of elution solvent and the amount of sorbent (MOFs) in the column on the efficiency of the conducted extraction were verified. The LOD ranged from 0.04 to 7.54 ng mL−1, and the linearity range for the analytes tested extended from 0.11/22.62 (depending on the compound) to 1000 ng mL−1. It was found that MOFs showed the most excellent selectivity to compounds having aromatic rings in their structure or a "spread" spatial structure. The best recoveries were obtained for DPAA, CAP, and malathion. Neonicotinoids (NEOs), highly selective toward insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, are extensively used due to their effectiveness against pests and relative non‐toxicity to vertebrates. However, their prolonged persistence in soil and water has led to frequent detection in food and environmental samples, posing significant environmental and health concerns. Recent research indicates these pesticides infiltrate aquatic ecosystems, threatening aquatic life and human health. Here, we improved the ultra‐performance liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry method for detecting NEOs in water samples, increasing its sensitivity to fulfill forthcoming detection needs. This approach enables the simultaneous quantification of eight NEOs and five NEO metabolites in diverse water sources, including tap, surface, groundwater, sewage, and seawater. Our method achieves remarkably low detection limits for direct injection (0.78–1.7 ng/L) and solid‐phase extraction methods (0.13–0.25 ng/L). Critically, our findings reveal that boiling domestic drinking water doesn't degrade NEOs; instead, it increases their concentration due to water evaporation. A 6‐min boiling period can amplify pesticide concentration by 4–5 times, presenting a significant hazard in culinary practices of specific regions where prolonged cooking could lead to alarmingly high levels of these insecticides. This study presents a method based on acid transesterification and the purification by solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry for quantifying 3- and 2-monochloropropanediol esters (3-MCPDE, 2-MCPDE) and glycidyl esters (GE) in nutritional foods. The fat was extracted by liquid–liquid extraction with petroleum ether and diethyl ether after the sample was hydrolysed with ammonia. Then the extract was purified by a SPE cartridge filled with the aminopropyl sorbents. It was demonstrated that the optimal elution volume for 3-MCPDE, 2-MCPDE and GE greatly depended on the sample matrix and varied from 6 to 12 mL for four different kinds of food matrices. All three analytes in the sample solution could be fully collected in the first 10–12 mL of eluate. By this way, monoacylglycerols commonly present in the samples were fully removed. Therefore, the overestimation of GE quantification was effectively eliminated. The modified analytical procedure was fully validated in a single laboratory and has been recommended as a Chinese Food Safety National Standard. In addition, two derivatisation agents, heptafluorobutyrylimidazole and phenylboronic acid, were proved to be equivalent in method accuracy and precision for the quantification of three analytes. Background: The analysis of vitamins in baby food is a challenging task given the complexity of the food matrix, vitamin stability, and strict regulations of the European Union regarding permissible deviations from declared values. Vitamins in food exist in different concentrations and forms and have different stabilities; thus, the preparation of samples for a reliable analysis using the same procedure is not straightforward. Therefore, significant attention has been devoted to optimizing sample preparation in the analysis of vitamins. Methods: This study aims to determine which of the sample preparation and extraction methods is the most efficient for the simultaneous determination of vitamins A, D, E, and K in milk and baby food using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Different samples of baby food were prepared in seven different ways based on four methods (saponification, enzymatic hydrolysis, solvent extraction, and solid-phase extraction). Results and Conclusions: According to the validation parameters, the optimal preparation method proved to be solid-phase extraction with a C18 stationary phase, with recoveries of 97.4%, 96.1%, 98.3%, and 96.2% for vitamins A, D, E, and K, respectively, and HPLC with a UV–Vis detector was identified as a sufficiently sensitive technique for the identification and quantification of fat-soluble vitamins in milk and baby food. N-Acyl-homoserine lactones (AHL) play a major role in the communication of Gram-negative bacteria. They influence processes such as biofilm formation, swarming motility, and bioluminescence in the aquatic environment. A comprehensive analytical method was developed to elucidate the "chemical communication" in pure bacterial cultures as well as in the aquatic environment and engineered environments with biofilms. Due to the high diversity of AHLs and their low concentrations in water, a sensitive and selective LC-ESI-MS/MS method combined with solid-phase extraction was developed for 34 AHLs, optimized and validated to quantify AHLs in bacterial conditioned medium, river water, and treated wastewater. Furthermore, the developed method was optimized in terms of enrichment volume, internal standards, limits of detection, and limits of quantification in several matrices. An unanticipated variety of AHLs was detected in the culture media of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (in total 8 AHLs), Phaeobacter gallaeciensis (in total 6 AHLs), and Methylobacterium mesophilicum (in total 15 AHLs), which to our knowledge have not been described for these bacterial cultures so far. Furthermore, AHLs were detected in river water (in total 5 AHLs) and treated wastewater (in total 3 AHLs). Stanozolol, a synthetic derivative of testosterone, is one of the common doping drugs among athletes and bodybuilders. It is metabolized to a large extent and metabolites are detected in urine for a longer duration than the parent compound. In this study, a novel dummy molecularly imprinted polymer (DMIP) is developed as a sorbent for solid-phase extraction of stanozolol metabolites from spiked human urine samples. The optimized DMIP is composed of stanozolol as the dummy template, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker in a ratio of 1:10:80. The extracted analytes were quantitively determined using a newly developed and validated ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method, where the limits of detection and quantitation were 0.91 and 1.81 ng mL−1, respectively, fulfilling the minimum required performance limit decided on by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The mean percentage extraction recoveries for 3'-hydroxystanozolol, 4β-hydroxystanozolol, and 16β-hydroxystanozolol are 97.80% ± 13.80, 83.16% ± 7.50, and 69.98% ± 2.02, respectively. As such, the developed DMISPE can serve as an efficient cost-effective tool for doping and regulatory agencies for simultaneous clean-up of the stanozolol metabolites prior to their quantification. Total oil and grease (TOG) in water is measured in industrial process waters to determine the concentration of petroleum products present. A common application for TOG measurement is to detect a hydrocarbon leak in circulated cooling water systems. A hydrocarbon leak from a heat exchanger has a negative effect on the stable operation of upgrading and refinery units. Detecting and quantifying a hydrocarbon leak is straightforward; however, identifying the source of the leak can be very time consuming and require a lot of trial and error. In this study, a solvent‐free TOG method using ClearShot extractors and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was developed and optimized for the quantification of bitumen derived hydrocarbon analytes in water. This was further expanded upon to develop a rapid method for hydrocarbon identification in the cooling water by combining chemical fingerprinting with a discriminant analysis classification model. Following the optimized solvent‐free TOG method, chemical fingerprints for six different hydrocarbon classes in water were analyzed by FTIR. The classification model for these hydrocarbon classes was constructed using a discriminant analysis algorithm with a 100% classification rate at a TOG mass loading greater than 150 μg. The optimized solvent‐free TOG method decreases exposure risk and ergonomic strain for technologists, improving overall safety and environmental performance. The hydrocarbon fingerprinting enables rapid prediction of a leak source which reduces the time and analysis required to isolate a leak as well as reducing the cost and environmental impact associated with blowdown and purge (disposal and treatment) of contaminated water. An amide‐based covalent organic framework (COF) was successfully synthesized using the reaction between 1,3,5‐trimesoyl chloride and ethylenediamine. The structure and morphology of the COF were characterized using Fourier‐transform infrared spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller surface area analysis. The COF was employed as a solid‐phase extraction adsorbent for the sampling and preconcentration of chlorophenols from industrial wastewater samples prior to high‐performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The experimental parameters influencing the extraction efficiency including type and volume of eluent solvent, sample solution volume, salt concentration, sample flow rate, and sample solution pH were investigated and optimized using a response surface methodology employing Box‐Behnken‐design. Under optimized conditions, calibration curves exhibited good linearities over the range of 0.003–10 µg/mL with determination coefficients (R2) ranging from 0.9982 to 0.9999. The method's limits of detection ranged from 0.001 to 0.01 µg/mL. Good repeatability was achieved with relative standard deviations below 4.7%. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the global oceans is an important long‐term carbon sink. Connections between molecular size, reactivity, and isotopic characteristics show that DOC exists on a continuum from biologically reactive to recalcitrant. The driving mechanisms behind the creation and persistence of recalcitrant DOC remain unknown. We show mean recalcitrant DOC (isolated via solid‐phase extraction; SPE‐DOC) δ13C values are 1.3 ± 0.6‰ lower than mean total DOC δ13C between depth ranges 0–200 m and 2–4 km on three GO‐SHIP Repeat Hydrography cruises. Lowest observed δ13C values correlate with low ∆14C and proximity to deep ocean hydrothermal systems. These data support the hypothesis that reworking of DOC through the microbial carbon pump is a key driver of the ocean's long‐term carbon sink. Mass‐balance modeling shows deep‐ocean DOC not captured by SPE is enriched in 13C, highlighting the need for continued research on non‐retained DOC to predict mechanisms that drive ocean carbon storage. Mixed-mode high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is increasingly used for the analysis of ionic and highly hydrophilic drugs, which are difficult to separate by conventional single-mode HPLC. In the former case, chromatographic separation is achieved using one of the several commercially available mixed-mode stationary phases, typically combinations of reversed and ion-exchange phases. Moreover, mixed-mode stationary phases can be used as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbents. This review focuses on the recent applications of mixed-mode stationary phases in the chromatographic analysis of bioactive compounds, such as drugs, herbicides, and pesticides. Specifically, we briefly summarize HPLC methods utilizing mixed-mode stationary phases and SPE pretreatment procedures utilizing mixed-mode sorbents developed in the last decade, thus providing a reference work for overcoming the difficulties in analyzing ionized or hydrophilic drugs by conventional reversed-phase chromatography. In the past few decades, considerable scientific strides have been made in the subject of drug analysis in human biological samples. However, the risk caused by incorrect drug plasma levels in patients still remains an important concern. This review paper attempts to investigate the advances made over the last ten years in common sample preparation techniques (SPT) for biological samples based on solid sorbents, including solid-phase extraction (SPE) and solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME), and in particular in the field of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), including non-stimuli-responsive and stimuli-responsive adsorbents. This class of materials is known as 'smart adsorbents', exhibiting tailored responses to various stimuli such as magnetic fields, pH, temperature, and light. Details are provided on how these advanced SPT are changing the landscape of modern drug analysis in their coupling with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analytical techniques, a general term that includes high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), as well as any variation of MS, such as tandem (MS/MS), multiple-stage (MSn), and high-resolution (HRMS) mass spectrometry. Some notes are also provided on coupling with less-performing techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) and diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) detection. In this study, several electrospun nanofibers were prepared and characterized, and the electrospun polystyrene/poly-(ether sulfone) nanofiber coated with copper nanoparticles (PS/PES-CuNP nanofibers) was selected and utilized as solid-phase extraction adsorbent. And then, the packed-fiber solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection method was established for the efficient determination of ochratoxins in foods. With the proposed method, several factors including the type and dosage of nanofibers, sample pH, extraction time, type, and volume of elution solvent were optimized. The results suggested that low limit of detection (0.102–0.126 ng/mL), limit of quantification (0.382–0.436 ng/mL), and recoveries (85.5–111.1%) for ochratoxin A, B, and C with relative standard deviations <7% were achieved. As-synthesized PS/PES-CuNP nanofibers displayed satisfactory potential practical application in the simultaneous pretreatment and determination of mycotoxins in complex matrice samples. The presence of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals (PhACs) in the environment poses potential risks. To comprehensively assess these risks, robust multiresidual analytical methods are essential for determining a broad spectrum of PhAC classes in various environmental compartments (soil, plants, and soil organisms). This study optimized extraction methods for analyzing over 40 PhACs from various matrices, including soil, lettuce, and earthworms. A four-step ultrasonic extraction method with varying extraction conditions and subsequent solid phase extraction was developed for soil samples. QuEChERS methods were optimized for extracting PhACs from lettuce and earthworm samples, addressing a literature gap in these less-studied matrices. The quantification of PhACs in soil, lettuce, and earthworm extracts was performed using a single LC–MS/MS method. Following thorough method validation, earthworms and lettuce were exposed to a mixture of 27 pharmaceuticals in a soil environment. The method validation results demonstrated the robustness of these methods for a broad spectrum of PhACs. Specifically, 29 out of 42 PhACs were extracted with an average efficiency > 50% and RSD < 30% from the soil; 40 out of 42 PhACs exhibited average efficiency > 50% and %RSD < 30% from the earthworms, while 39 out of 42 PhACs showed average efficiency > 50% and RSD < 30% from the lettuce. Exposure experiments confirmed the viability of these methods for quantifying a diverse range of PhACs in different environmental compartments. This study presents three thoroughly validated methods for determining more than 40 PhACs in diverse matrices, enabling a comprehensive assessment of PhAC dissemination in the environment. In this paper, a solid phase extraction procedure was developed for the simultaneous extraction of 22 multiclass high-risk pesticides, containing a variety of chemical groups (organophosphate, neonicotinoid, sulfonylurea, strobilurin, triazole, triazine, and acetanilide), from surface water samples. The target analytes extracted on the HLB SPE cartridge, and then eluted with acetonitrile with 5% (v/v) formic acid. The final sample solution was analysed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS) system. Under optimum conditions, good linearity was obtained for the target pesticides with correlation coefficient greater than 0.99. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) for the 22 pesticides was 0.1 ng/mL. The absolute recoveries of the pesticides from spiked water samples ranged from 70.0% to 121.5%. Relative standard deviations (RSD) for five replicate determinations were below 14.7%. The aim of this study was to develop a kinetic-spectrophotometric method for 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (MCPA) determination and apply it for pesticide determination in baby tea and baby food samples, using solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by the kinetic-spectrophotometric method and the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. This method is based on the inhibited effect of MCPA on the oxidation of sulfanilic acid (SA) by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of Co2+ ion as catalyst in alkaline medium. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically by measuring the increase in absorbance with time of the reaction product at 368 nm. Under the experimental conditions used, MCPA showed a linear dynamic range of 0.14 to 2.0 μg mL−1, and from 2.0 to 20.00 μg mL−1 with relative standard deviations (RSD) from 1.07 to 4.35%. The limit of detection and the limit of quantification were 0.052 and 0.107 μg mL−1. The method was successfully applied to determination of MCPA residues in baby tea and baby food samples. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used for extraction of MCPA from samples using Chromabond® C18 cartridges. The HPLC method was used as a comparative method to verify the results of kinetic method. The results obtained by two different methods showed good agreement. The proposed method is highly sensitive, simple, easy, requires cheap reagents, and leads to good recovery levels. Aim: Currently, no information regarding the sennosides A and B content is provided on bofutsushosan extract products for ethical use. In this study, sennosides A and B in bofutsushosan extract products from eight different pharmaceutical companies and those in bofutsushosan decoction were quantitatively analyzed. Additionally, since it has been reported that sennoside A is unstable to heat, the relationship between the different decoction times of Rhubarb and the total extracted amounts of sennosides A and B was investigated. Finally, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics analysis was performed on Rhubarb extracts to evaluate the variability in the quality of Rhubarb. Methods: Solutions of bofutsushosan extract products, bofutsushosan decoction, and Rhubarb decoction were subjected to solid‐phase extraction, and then were analyzed using HPLC. The five Rhubarb extracts prepared from five different lots were subjected to NMR‐based metabolomics analysis. Results: The quantities of sennosides A and B varied among the bofutsushosan extract products, with a maximum interproduct variation of approximately five‐fold. Sennosides A and B were not significantly unstable to heat up to 60 min. The five Rhubarb samples were classified into three independent clusters. Conclusion: It is recommended that the quantities of sennosides A and B in Kampo extract products, including Rhubarb, be described in the package insert. When preparing Rhubarb‐containing Kampo medicines, sennosides A and B decomposition can be ignored for decoction times of up to 60 min. The sample preparation step is pivotal in glycoproteomic analysis. An effective approach in glycoprotein sample preparation involves enriching glycopeptides by solid-phase extraction (SPE) using polar stationary phases in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) mode. The aim of this work is to show how different experimental conditions influence the enrichment efficiency of glycopeptides from human immunoglobulin G (IgG) on an aminopropyl-modified SPE column. Different compositions of the elution solvent (acetonitrile, methanol, and isopropanol), along with varying concentrations of elution solvent acidifiers (formic and acetic acid), and different concentrations of acetonitrile for the conditioning and washing solvents (65%, 75%, and 85% acetonitrile) were tested to observe their effects on the glycopeptide enrichment process. Isopropanol proved less effective in enriching glycopeptides, while acetonitrile was the most efficient, with methanol in between. Higher formic acid concentrations in the elution solvent weakened the ionic interactions, particularly with sialylated glycopeptides. Substituting formic acid with acetic acid led to earlier elution of more glycopeptides. The acetonitrile concentration in conditioning and washing solutions played a key role; at 65% acetonitrile, glycopeptides were not retained on the SPE column and were detected in the flow-through fraction. Ultimately, it was proven that the enrichment method was applicable to human plasma samples, resulting in a significant decrease in the abundances of non-glycosylated peptides. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first systematic investigation into the impact of the mobile phase on glycopeptide enrichment using an aminopropyl-modified SPE column in HILIC mode. This study demonstrates the substantial impact of even minor variations in experimental conditions, which have not yet been considered in the literature, on SPE-HILIC glycopeptide enrichment. Consequently, meticulous optimization of these conditions is imperative to enhance the specificity and selectivity of glycoproteomic analysis, ensuring accurate and reliable quantification. Background: Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of naturally occurring steroidal phytohormones mediating a wide range of pivotal developmental and physiological functions throughout the plant’s life cycle. Therefore, it is of great significance to determine the content and the distribution of BRs in plants.Regretfully, although a large number of quantitative methods for BRs by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) have been reported, the in planta distribution of BRs is still unclear because of their lower contents in plant tissues and the lack of effective ionizable groups in their chemical structures. Methods: We stablished a novel analytical method of BRs based on C18 cartridge solid-phase extraction (SPE) purification, 4-(dimethylamino)-phenylboronic acid (DMAPBA) derivatization, and online valve-switching system coupled with ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-electro spray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS). This method has been used to quantify three structural types of BRs (epibrassinolide, epicastasterone, and 6-deoxo-24-epicastaster one) in different organs of Brassica napus L. (rapeseed). Results: We obtained the contents of three structural types of BRs in various organ tissues of rapeseed. The contents of three BRs in rapeseed flowers were the highest, followed by tender pods. The levels of three BRs all decreased during the maturation of the organs. We outlined the spatial distribution maps of three BRs in rapeseed based on these results, so as to understand the spatial distribution of BRs at the visual level. Conclusions: Our results provided useful information for the precise in situ localization of BRs in plants and the metabolomic research of BRs in future work. The amount of macrolide (MAL) residues in aquatic products, including oleandomycin (OLD), erythromycin (ERM), clarithromycin (CLA), azithromycin (AZI), kitasamycin (KIT), josamycin (JOS), spiramycin (SPI), tilmicosin (TIL), tylosin (TYL), and roxithromycin (ROX), was determined using solid-phase extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The residues were extracted with 1% ammonia acetonitrile solution and purified by neutral alumina adsorption. Chromatographic separation was completed on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column with acetonitrile–0.1% formic acid aqueous solution as the mobile phase, and mass spectrometry detection was performed by multiple reaction monitoring scanning with the positive mode in an electrospray ion source (ESI+). Five isotopically labeled compounds were used as internal standards for quality control purposes. The findings indicated that across the mass concentration span of 1.0–100 μg/L, there was a strong linear correlation (R2 > 0.99) between the concentration and instrumental response for the 10 MALs. The limit of detection of UPLC-MS/MS was 0.25–0.50 μg/kg, and the limit of quantitation was 0.5–1.0 μg/kg. The added recovery of blank matrix samples at standard gradient levels (1.0, 5.0, and 50.0 μg/kg) was 83.1–116.6%, and the intra-day precision and inter-day precisions were 3.7 and 13.8%, respectively. The method is simple and fast, with high accuracy and good repeatability, in line with the requirements for accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the residues for 10 MALs in aquatic products. There is a strong interest in monitoring copper in environmental waters, but its direct analysis suffers from strong matrix interferences. This is why, a sample pretreatment based on solid‐phase extraction (SPE) is often used but conventional sorbents usually lack specificity. It is overcome with ion‐imprinted polymers (IIPs). This work evaluates for the first time the use of the dummy approach for the synthesis of Cu(II)‐targeting IIPs. Two analog ions Ni(II) and Zn(II) were tested as templates and the resulting IIPs were packed in SPE cartridges. The SPE procedure was designed by optimizing a washing step following the sample percolation, to eliminate the interfering ions retained on the IIP by non‐specific interactions. To optimize the washing step, solutions at different pH or containing tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane as a complexing agent at different concentrations were tested and combined. Zn‐IIP appeared more promising than Ni‐IIP, showing excellent specificity and a high selectivity. Its retention capacity was determined to be 100 µg/g, and different isotherm models were evaluated to fit with the adsorption data. Finally, applications to mineral and sea waters were successfully completed and led to high and repeatable extraction recoveries for Cu(II) (88 ± 1% and 83 ± 3%, respectively). The study is focused on environmental contamination with platinum metals and compares soil samples from four European cities: Jihlava (Czechia), Brno (Czechia), Vienna (Austria) and Moscow (Russian Federation). The research was aimed at determining the amount of platinum and palladium in soils that were sampled in different urban areas of the mentioned cities. The selection of sampling points was focused on crossroads and roads with a high intensity of car traffic, especially places which are frequent traffic jams in populated agglomeration. The results of this study show that the highest concentrations of platinum and palladium in the soil are close to these roads. The greatest release occurs when cars start on in places with low air circulation, such as tunnels, crossroads or highway entrances. Based on this fact, these localizations are the most interesting for research. Concentrations above the limit are also at places with poor dispersion conditions. This work includes monitoring the amount of platinum and palladium released into the environment due to automobile traffic. The measurement showed a connection between the increased traffic situation in individual cities and the concentration of platinum and palladium in the soil matrix. Platinum and palladium values ranged in the following ranges. For Jihlava, the concentration of platinum was determined from 16.93 to 38.72 ng g−1 and palladium from 2.705 to 8.452 ng g−1. For Brno, the concentration of platinum was determined from 34.53 to49.71 ng g−1 and palladium 8.450–12.78 ng g−1. For Vienna, the concentration of platinum was determined from 39.22 to 159.2 ng g−1 and palladium 18.45–98.21 ng g−1. For the Moscow center, the concentration of platinum was determined from 5.897 (background value) to 352.9 ng g−1 and palladium 2.598 (background value) to 86.11 ng g−1. In this study, a carbon quantum dots composite was made from algal-cyanobacterial precursors using the oilothermal method. The performance of this composite as an adsorbent was evaluated in a model based on cadmium. The results showed that its optimal pH-dependent adsorption efficiency range is so broad that it covers pHs 5–10. The best correlations for adsorption isotherms and kinetics were observed with Langmuir and Elovich nonlinear models, respectively. The maximum cadmium adsorption capacity of 5.59882 ± 0.3276 mg/g and affinity constant of 2.66765 ± 0.56894 L/g were obtained in just 2 min of exposure time. The tolerance against ionic strength and co-existing cations was 5 ppm, and the recovery efficiency of cadmium from the natural sample was more than 95%. According to the findings of this research, it can be said that the algal-cyanobacterial origin carbon quantum dots composite, due to its unique properties, can be an efficient adsorbent for use in cadmium solid-phase extraction. In this study, adsorbents based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in two solid-phase extraction application forms, pipette tip and magnetic extraction, were used for the selective extraction of coumarins. The pipette-tip solid-phase extraction reduced solvent volumes; the magnetic MIP extraction was simple and effective for phase separation. Parameters affecting extraction, such as the amount of adsorbent, type of washing solvent, volume of the elution solvent, and extraction times for magnetic extraction, were optimized. The MIP-based adsorbents displayed high selectivity and extraction efficiency, resulting in recoveries ranging from 70.3 to 102.0% (RSD % less than 5.5%) for five coumarins under study, 6,7-dihydroxycoumarin-6-β-D-glucoside, coumarin, 7-methoxycoumarin, 6-methylcoumarin, and dicoumarol. The extracts were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array (DAD) and fluorescence (FLD) detectors, reaching limits of quantification of 0.5 and 0.9 µg·mL−1 for coumarin and dicoumarol detected by DAD and 0.001–0.012 µg·mL−1 for the other prohibited simple coumarins when used as a fragrance (detected by FLD). A citric acid cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymer was synthesized and loaded on micro-ceramic balls to fabricate the solid-phase adsorbents (P-MCB) for adsorption and extraction of triazole pesticides from water. The stability of β-CD polymer and P-MCB was investigated in solutions with different pH values at different temperatures. The adsorption properties and the influence of kinetics, sorbent amount, pesticide concentration, and temperature on the adsorption capacity were evaluated. The results showed P-MCB had favorable adsorption of 15.98 mg/g flutriafol in 3.5 h. The equilibrium data followed the Freundlich equation, and the adsorption of flutriafol and diniconazole followed the second-order kinetics. The recovery rate of P-MCB for triazole pesticides in water was satisfactory, and the recovery rate was still 80.1%, even at the 10th cycle. The P-MCB had good stability, with a degradation rate of 0.2% ± 0.08 within 10 days, which could ensure extraction and recycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many agrochemicals are chiral molecules, and most of them are marketed as racemates or diastereomeric mixtures. Stereoisomers that are not the active enantiomer have little or no pesticidal activity and can exert serious toxic effects towards non-target organisms. Thus, investigating the possible exposure to different isomers of chiral pesticides is an urgent need. The present work was aimed at developing a new enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous determination of nine chiral pesticides in urine. Two solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures, based on different carbon-based sorbents (graphitized carbon black (GCB) and buckypaper (BP)), were developed and compared. By using GCB, all analytes were recovered with yields ranging from 60 to 97%, while BP allowed recoveries greater than 54% for all pesticides except those with acid characteristics. Baseline separation was achieved for the enantiomers of all target agrochemicals on a Lux Cellulose-2 column within 24 min under reversed-phase mode. The developed method was then validated according to the FDA guidelines for bioanalytical methods. Besides recovery, the other evaluated parameters were precision (7–15%), limits of detection (0.26–2.21 µg/L), lower limits of quantitation (0.43–3.68 µg/L), linear dynamic range, and sensitivity. Organophosphorous (OP) pesticides can cause many human diseases. In this study, the separation and determination of two organophosphorous pesticides (diazinon and methyl-parathion) in biological samples using solid-phase extraction method prior to their measurements by high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were investigated. Herein, a new functionalized cerium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) bearing oxime moiety, denoted here UiO-66(Ce)-MO, was synthesized through two-synthetic steps from the pristine UiO-66(Ce) and then applied as an efficient porous adsorbent for the extraction of pesticides from biological samples. Various techniques including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis were used for the description of adsorbent. The optimization of variables was performed by Box–Behnken design combined with response surface methodology. The factors' effects including pH, eluent volume (EV), sample flow rate (SF) and eluent flow rate (EF) were also examined. The optimum conditions for both compounds were pH 5.5, eluent volume 0.6 mL, SF 2 mL min−1, and EF 0.2 mL min−1, leading to 97.1% and 96.0% removal of diazinon and methyl-parathion, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained 454.5 mg g−1 for methyl-parathion and 476.2 mg g−1 for diazinon. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.04 μgL−1 for diazinon and 0.06 μgL−1 for methyl-parathion. Sensitivity analysis showed that pH plays a significant role on the efficiency of both organic pollutants. Remarkably, the results showed that this adsorbent outperforms the other UiO-66(Ce) samples and is suitable for separation and determination of these organic materials from water and biological real samples (blood plasma and urine). Some South American countries have ancient traditions that may pose legal problems, such as the consumption of coca leaves, as this can provide positive results for cocaine use after the analysis of biological samples. For this reason, it is necessary to find specific markers that help differentiate legal from illegal consumption, such as tropacocaine, cinnamoylcocaine, and especially hygrine and cuscohygrine. In this work, two techniques for collecting biological samples are compared: the Quantisal® Oral Fluid collection device and passive drooling. Once the samples were collected, they were subjected to solid-phase extraction for subsequent injection into GC-MS. Different validation parameters included in international guides have been studied to evaluate whether the proposed method is valid for the defined purpose, placing special emphasis on the study of the matrix effect and little value on GC-MS analyses. With respect to this parameter, an increase in the signal was found for CUS and t-CIN, but it was not significant for the rest of the substances studied. The recoveries have varied significantly depending on the way of working, being higher when working with standardized areas. After carrying out work with the oral fluid samples collected from laboratory volunteers, the method was applied to two real samples. In this study, eight pharmaceuticals belonging to two classes, antihistaminic and antimigraine, were considered. Ultra‐performance liquid chromatography‐diode array detection was set up and gradient elution was used. The mobile phase was composed of acetonitrile and trifluoroacetic acid solution. Chromatographic separation was carried out with a run time of 9 min. The preconcentration of eight studied solutes was realized by micro solid‐phase extraction. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide‐titanium dioxide nanotubes, and C‐18 bonded silica solid‐phase extraction (SPE) sorbents were evaluated and compared concerning recoveries. The results of the optimization of factors affecting the extraction efficiency including sample volume, the elution solvent type, and its volume are reported. For validation of the analytical procedure, specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy, limit of detection, and limit of quantification were evaluated. The developed method was successfully applied to the analysis of wastewater treatment samples. The extraction recoveries of pharmaceutical substances were above 81.23% for the three SPE sorbents. The extraction method was selective and the detection and quantification limits were between 0.004–0.02 and 0.01–0.06 μg/L, respectively. [Objectives] The paper was to establish an ultra high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/linear ion trap complex mass spectrometry for the determination of 10 kinds of a2-receptor agonists in animal derived food. [Methods] The samples were extracted with sodium carbonate buffer solution and ethyl acetate, and analyzed by mass spectrometry after solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography separation. [Results] Ten kinds of a2-receptor agonists showed a good linear relationship in the range of 1 -100 p,g/mL, with the average recovery of over 69% and the relative standard deviation less than 8.32%. The detection limit of 10 kinds of a2-receptor agonists was up to 1 jxg/kg. [Conclusions] The method has good selectivity and strong anti-interference ability, and can meet the requirements of 10 kinds of a2-receptor agonists residues in animal derived food. Fatty acid analysis is an essential step in evaluating the potential of macroalgae for biodiesel production. An extraction method was developed to simultaneously analyze up to five types of biodiesel-fuel-related fatty acids (myristic acid, palmitic acid, cis-palmitvaccenic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid) in macroalgae using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Lypophilization and solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques were applied to improve the extraction efficiency and effectively purify samples. The optimal conditions for SPE were set by comparing the recoveries according to the various solvent conditions for each step (loading, washing, and elution). In addition, the introduction of trimethylaminoethyl (TMAE) derivatives to the hydroxyl group of the target analyte increased the ionization efficiency and sensitivity. The derivatized samples were analyzed using the LC–MS/MS method with electrospray ionization in the positive and multiple-reaction monitoring modes. The target analytes were separated and detected within 13.5 min using a CAPCELL PAK C18 MGII S3 column. Gradient elution was performed using distilled water and acetonitrile containing 5 mM ammonium acetate. This method offers a reliable and sensitive tool for the analysis of macroalgae samples for their potential use in biodiesel production. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been recognized as a potentially serious threat to the natural environment. NSAIDs are popular painkillers, and the main pathway for them to reach natural water is via discharge from wastewater and sewage treatment plants. In order to monitor contamination caused by these drugs, as well as their impact on the environment, a new material based on Silica Gel 60, functionalized with a dendrimeric copolymer of methylamine and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (named MA-BDDE), was prepared. Initial physicochemical characterization of the MA-BDDE material was carried out using ATR FT-IR spectroscopy as well as solid-state carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy. Its effectiveness at NSAID extraction was evaluated by the application of five select drugs in dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE): aspirin, ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen. This was followed by their simultaneous determination using the HPLC-UV/Vis system demonstrating good sensitivity, with limits of detection values within the 63–265 ng mL−1 range. A comparison of the sorption capacity of each pharmaceutical with unmodified base silica showed an at least tenfold increase in capacity after modification. Initial MA-BDDE application in a quick, low-waste extraction procedure of those select NSAIDs from spiked surface water samples yielded promising results for its use as a sorbent, as recovery values of analytes adsorbed from various samples were found to exceed 72%. Antibiotic contamination in polluted rivers is well recognized as an environmental and public health challenge. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment of three commonly used antibiotics (amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin) were assessed in the Litani River, the most important and highly polluted river in Lebanon. Physicochemical and microbiological water quality parameters including the antibiotic-resistant ones were in parallel determined in the same sites. Water samples from five sites stretching across the river upper basin were analyzed for the antibiotics under study using high-performance liquid chromatography, with both fluorometric and UV detectors post-extraction using a solid-phase method with a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance cartridges. The disc diffusion method and standardized water quality methods were used for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and water quality assessment, respectively. Amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin were found at concentrations of 250 ng/L and 107.2 ng/L, while azithromycin was not detected in any of the sites under study. Varying levels of antibiotic resistance were detected with the isolated Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) while the total coliforms showed resistance to multiple antibiotics. COD, TP, PO43-, TN, NO3-, NH4 + , E. coli, total coliform, P. aeruginosa, and Cd levels surpassed permissible levels. Correlation analysis with water quality parameters (COD, total phosphate, phosphate, total nitrogen, and cadmium) showed a significant positive correlation with ciprofloxacin (r > 0.5, p value < 0.05). Also, the resistant P. aeruginosa showed a significant positive correlation with cadmium (r > 0.5, p value < 0.05) while the resistant E. coli was positively correlated with total nitrogen, nitrate, and lead levels (r > 0.5, p value < 0.05). The ecological risk assessment revealed that all the tested antibiotics pose low risks (ecological risk quotient RQ < 0.1) except ciprofloxacin, which could pose a medium risk (0.1 < RQ < 1). Future research concerning the long-term assessment of antibiotics' residues and the identification of resistance genes in the river is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites of molds which can contaminate food and beverages. Because of their acute and chronic toxicity, they can have harmful effects when ingested or inhaled, posing severe risks to human health. Contemporary analytical methods have the sensitivity required for contamination detection and quantification, but the direct application of these methods on real samples is not straightforward because of matrix complexity, and clean-up and preconcentration steps are needed, more and more requiring the application of highly selective solid-phase extraction materials. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial receptors mimicking the natural antibodies that are increasingly being used as a solid phase in extraction methods where selectivity towards target analytes is mandatory. In this review, the state-of-the-art about molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction materials in mycotoxin contamination analysis will be discussed, with particular attention paid to the use of mimic molecules in the synthesis of mycotoxin-imprinted materials, to the application of these materials to food real samples, and to the development of advanced extraction methods involving molecular imprinting technology. Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure.
