The place name Speranzella in Carlo Bernari's novel signifies the author's penchant for evocative and symbolic titles, a trend also observed in his other works within the 'Trilogia napoletana'. These titles encapsulate Bernari's portrayal of Naples as the 'paese delle anime' (the land of souls) rather than just 'dell'anima' (of the soul), thus emphasizing its significance to all inhabitants. Through an exploration of unpublished letters between Bernari and his publisher Vallecchi, discussions regarding the choice of the novel's cover are examined, shedding light on the significance of the repeated mention and personification of 'Speranzella' within the narrative. Along the Annexation Wall in Bethlehem, an entangled web of tags, slogans, graphic stencils, and gestures cover the surface of the concrete barrier wall and asphalt road. In Napoli, Italy, similar messages, and symbols appear on the dressed stone facade of government buildings, churches, and apartments. Messages exclaim: Not only Floyd, Iyad Hallaq Too, IAW, Palestino, and No Balls? #Build Walls. Varying in opacity, the words and symbols fight for legibility and presence, acting as a conversational message board between local and international activists. Such visual elements are, according to Ella Chmielewska, "connected with the specific history of protest, contestation, and subversion framed by the locality" (Chmielewska, 2007). Thus, graffiti may be read as an actual and symbolic act of resistance, framed by locality. Considering the saturation of solidarity-based graffiti in places like Bethlehem and Napoli, this paper examines how urban space both facilitates and complicates the durability of activist-based interventions. Through a pictorial study, I focus on the effects of graffiti-based activism and examine how these marks continue to draw attention to solidarity-based causes. Kevin D. Murphy and Sally O'Driscoll refer to these types of marks as "ephemeral interventions," a reference to the temporary nature of graffiti and the potential long-term impact of certain politically motivated works that produce iconic symbols/signs (Murphy and O'Driscoll, 2015). Whether along the Annexation Wall in Bethlehem or the streets of Napoli, graffitied messages are specific to local political and social causes, yet also connect to greater, global solidarity movements. Travel diaries of members of successive generations of the Demidov family from the mid eighteenth century onwards (Aleksandr, Pavel and Petr Georgevich between 1751 and 1761, and Nikita Akinfievich in 1771-1773), shed light on how Russian travelers visited Naples and the surrounding area, what distinguished those visits as well as their perceptions of Vesuvius. Some of the mechanisms through which house prices are determined to remain unclear. This work aims to shed some light on the subject by analyzing the impact of text structure and given keywords in the announcements of house sales over the internet. It seems that, especially in trade among private individuals, the marketing of the announcement can make the difference. By retrieving data regarding houses on sale in Italy, one of the countries in which the housing market is still overwhelmingly composed of deals between private individuals (and not a market shared by a few big companies), we derived via OLS and fractional response probit estimation the impact of the text structure and several keywords. Our results show that there is no mark-up due to verbs and punctuation, or transport- and tourism-related keywords, while an abundance of nouns and adjectives or keywords related to investment, panorama, and cultural heritage have a positive (or expected) impact on the price. This suggests that using many nouns and adjectives in writing a house sale announcement helps to sell the property at a higher price, and also that while the latter set of keywords play a role in determining house prices, announcements leveraging transport opportunities and touristic opportunities do not. This essay studies the meaning of the concept of revolt/revolution in the historiographic work of Rosario Villari, as well as the analysis he carried out with regard to this phenomenon and the forms it adopted, taking into account the special interest he showed in the evolution of its stances and explanations through the years. Despite having the great revolt of Naples of 1647-1648 as the main focus of his research, in his different works, this specialist always tended to compare this episode to other rebellions occurring in the Early Modern period, taking a particular interest in the mutual influences shared by different European revolts. The development and changes of his approaches to this subject have a starting and final point respectively in the two versions of his seminal book focused on the conflict known as Masianello's revolt, the first one being published in 1967 and the second in 2012. This paper analyses the role of Roman Imperial marble collection of Pappacoda Chapel, Diomede Carafa Palace, the Arch of Saint Eligius Major in Naples. It consists of many masterpieces, fortunately preserved in original state and in unusual architectural context. The author propose a study of archaeological profile of Roman spolia employed between the beginning and the end of the Fifteenth century. The elements were chosen with an erudite interlacement of encomiastic nature by the owners: Artusio Pappacoda, Diomede Carafa and Aragonese King. The research is divided in two layers: the first reflects the archaeological analysis of marble sculptures; the second relates the relationship between the reuse of the Ancient and the revival of architecture of Roman and Svevian type in Naples. Luigi Cosenza, the most important Neapolitan architect of modernity, has been among a tenacious defenders of the Campania tradition both in spontaneous forms and in those educated in official historiography. He loved with the same intensity the Vesuvian peasant houses and the impressive ruins of Magna Graecia, the rich churches of the Neapolitan Baroque and the simple architecture of the islands. Reproducing them in a contemporary key has also managed to redeem popular expressions that with a snobbish and superficial attitude have often been confined to an aesthetic category of “inferior” value. On the occasion of the traveling exhibition “Italy at Work” (1950) across the United States, designed to promote Italian craftsmanship and design, Cosenza had the opportunity to develop an organic project on these issues. Background: A perfect smile is dictated by the balance among 3 parameters: the white (teeth), the pink (gum), and the lips: excessive gingival display while smiling has been a cause of esthetic embarrassment for many patients, thus affecting their psychosocial behavior. With respect to different etiologies, treatment of gummy smile must be properly planned: treatment options include facial surgery, oral surgery, or laser.Objectives: Given the growing demand for less invasive techniques and observed complications secondary to botulinum toxin injection, we present a novel treatment option aimed at correcting gummy smile using hyaluronic acid injection and review the published techniques and the anatomy of the involved facial muscles.Methods: The treatment was performed by infiltration in the paranasal area, in the location of the most cranial portion of the nasojugal fold, about 3 mm lateral to the alar cartilage wing, according to a vector perpendicular to the cutaneous plane, to gently compress the lateral fibers of the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi without invading it. A Vycross® technology filler was used for all the treatments.Results: All patients had an immediate improvement, with a maximum duration ranging from 186 to 240 days (mean, 213 days), according to parameters of the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS 4.06).Conclusions: This new, less invasive and safer technique to correct dynamic excessive gingival display was shown to be feasible and safe with a long-lasting result. Abstract: The metropolitan area of Napoli (∼3 M inhabitants) in southern Italy is located in between two explosive active volcanoes: Somma‐Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei. Pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) from these volcanoes may reach the city center, as witnessed by the Late Quaternary stratigraphic record. Here we compute a novel multivolcano Probabilistic Volcanic Hazard Assessment of PDCs, in the next 50 years, by combining the probability of PDC invasion from each volcano (assuming that they erupt independently) over the city of Napoli and its surroundings. We model PDC invasion with the energy cone model accounting for flows of very different (but realistic) mobility and use the Bayesian Event Tree for Volcanic Hazard to incorporate other volcano‐specific information such as the probability of eruption or the spatial variability in vent opening probability. Worthy of note, the method provides a complete description of Probabilistic Volcanic Hazard Assessment, that is, it yields percentile maps displaying the epistemic uncertainty associated with our best (aleatory) hazard estimation. Since the probability density functions of the model parameters of the energy cone are unknown, we propose an ensemble of different hazard assessments based on different assumptions on such probability density functions. The ensemble merges two plausible distributions for the collapse height, reflecting a source of epistemic (specifically, parametric) uncertainty.
