Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) is one of the stable oxidation states of chromium that has been reported to elicit various toxic effects in aquatic organisms. However, the mechanisms of Cr6+ toxicity are still poorly understood. Thus, the present study investigated the tissue accumulation, cytotoxic, oxidative stress, and immunotoxic effects of Cr6+ in juvenile Clarias gariepinus. The fish were exposed to waterborne Cr6+ concentrations (0, 0.42, 0.84, and 1.68 mg/L) for 28 days, after which they were sacrificed and various organs were harvested for the determination of Cr6+ levels. Other parameters that were indicators of oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, and immunotoxicity were measured. Cr6+ accumulated more in the kidney and liver of the exposed fish, especially at the highest concentration. The levels of lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation increased significantly in the exposed fish. The activities of superoxide dismutase and lactate dehydrogenase increased significantly in exposed fish compared to the control. The total white blood cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils counts were significantly higher in the exposed fish compared to the control fish. The respiratory burst activity decreased significantly in the exposed fish while the myeloperoxidase content did not differ significantly. There were upregulations of TNF-α and HSP 70 while CYP II and MHC 2 were downregulated in the exposed fish. Also, exposure to Cr6+ resulted in various histopathological alterations in the architecture of the head kidney. The results indicate concentration-dependent toxic effects of Cr6+ in C. gariepinus. Biotic samples from Algeciras Bay (South-west Europe) were studied to assess its ecological status, complementing the previous abiotic monitoring of trace metals in water and sediments. This bay is a densely populated area with intense port traffic and is highly industrialised with metal inputs. To study the impact of this, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu contents were determined in tissues of benthic (Solea senegalensis) and benthopelagic species (Scorpaena porcus, Trigloporus lastoviza, and Diplodus sargus sargus). Notable levels of Zn and Cu were found in the liver and gills of all fish species. Compared to international muscle guidelines, Pb sometimes exceeded the most restrictive values, outstanding S. porcus with 27% of samples above the permissible value. Metal pollution indexes revealed that the liver and gills of benthic species were more affected by metal pollution than benthopelagic species, especially in most industrialised sites. Particularly, S. senegalensis presented a higher accumulation factor from sediment of Cd and Cu in the liver (30.1 and 345.1), probably due to the close interaction as benthic species. Among the species studied, S. senegalensis and D. sargus sargus proved to be the best representative and useful bioindicators of metal-polluted environments as this bay. The ecological status of Algeciras Bay (South-west Europe), highly influenced by anthropogenic activities, was assessed by monitoring Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in water and sediment samples. Total contents and metal fractions with different availabilities and their spatial-seasonal distribution were determined. The trend in water and sediment contents were Zn > Pb ≈ Cu > Cd, without significant seasonal variations. Sites 3 and 4, closest to industrial activities, had the highest metal concentrations, mainly in sediments. Cd showed low partition coefficient in water, indicating higher bioavailability. Total metal content in sediments exceeded the threshold effect level for Cu and were close to Pb. The BCR procedure revealed the highest availabilities for Cd and Pb, due to its higher content in exchangeable and reducible fractions. Higher Pb levels (21.4 ± 5.1 mg/kg) were found in sediments of this bay compared with other ecosystems. Pollution indexes for sediment quality revealed that site 3 was the most polluted (CF = 7.12 and Igeo = 2.25). For an integrative study of the ecological status of this significant bay, these results have been complemented with the metal evaluation in benthic and benthopelagic fish tissues in Ecological status of Algeciras Bay, in a highly anthropised area in south-west Europe, through metal assessment—Part II: Biotic samples. This study attempts to assess the spatio-temporal distribution of total organic carbon (TOC) and heavy metals in one of the Ramsar wetlands of Indo-Burmese province. Water samples were collected from 10 sampling points during the premonsoon, monsoon and postmonsoon season of 2016 and 2017. The general water parameters such as low DO, high BOD, and high fluoride imply the wetland water's deteriorated quality. The mean TOC of water was estimated to be 2.4 ± 0.33 ppm, the first report from Deepor Beel. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a significant positive relation (> 0.7) between TOC, phosphate, and nitrate, which indicates the seasonal inflow of these parameters from a similar source. The computed heavy metal indices revealed that most of the water samples were highly contaminated by metals. The metal concentration recorded in the selected macrophytes and fishes species was far above the concentration of the respective metal in the water samples. Metal distribution in plant samples disclosed that Euryale ferox showed better accumulation ability than Hydrilla verticillata and Eichhornia crassipes. Among the fish species, the highest metal accumulation was recorded in Xenentodon cancila (zinc, iron, manganese, and nickel) and Channa punctatus (lead and cadmium). In the fish samples, metal accumulation was found to be higher in the organs (particularly in the kidney) than in the muscles. Elevated heavy metal concentrations in soils are a cause for concern as they are hazardous to soil organisms including earthworms which are considered as ecosystem engineers. Current ecotoxicity tests predominantly use temperate earthworm species, and thus there is the need to include a broader genera of native species to improve ecological risk assessment. Alma nilotica, is a tropical anecic earthworm species that survives well under laboratory conditions and has potential for use in ecotoxicology testing but lacks published toxicity data for important pollutants. Growth and reproduction bioassays were carried out with A. nilotica to determine the relationship between the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr in spiked soils and their bioaccumulation and toxic effects. Positive linear relationships were found between soil-metal and internal earthworm-metal concentrations. Cu did not inhibit growth up to 35 days of exposure but became toxic with longer exposure duration. Zn was not regulated by A. nilotica although it is an essential metal that is well regulated by Eisenia sp. commonly used in standard ecotoxicity tests, showing differences in metal regulation by earthworms of different ecological categories. Based on bioaccumulation factors (BAFs), growth inhibition and reproduction effects the metals were ranked in decreasing toxicity as Pb > Cr > Zn > Cu. The mean 20% Internal Effects Concentrations (IEC20s) for reproduction were 1.04, 2.9, 8.3 and 224.2 mg metal kg−1 earthworm for Pb, Cr, Zn and Cu respectively. Mine wastewater often contains dissolved metals at concentrations too low to be economically extracted by existing technologies, yet too high for environmental discharge. The most common treatment is chemical precipitation of the dissolved metals using limestone and subsequent disposal of the sludge in tailing impoundments. While it is a cost‐effective solution to meet regulatory standards, it represents a lost opportunity. In this study, we engineered Escherichia coli to overexpress its native NikABCDE transporter and a heterologous metallothionein to capture nickel at concentrations in local effluent streams. We found the engineered strain had a 7‐fold improvement in the bioaccumulation performance for nickel compared to controls, but also observed a drastic decrease in cell viability due to metabolic burden or inducer (IPTG) toxicity. Growth kinetic analysis revealed the IPTG concentrations used based on past studies lead to growth inhibition, thus delineating future avenues for optimization of the engineered strain and its growth conditions to perform in more complex environments. Simple Summary: Steel production emits manganese and other heavy metals into the environment, where these byproducts can lead to health problems in humans and other animals. Birds have historically been used to detect harmful chemicals in the air, and in this paper, we show that this role continues into the present day. Feathers of a small terrestrial songbird, the Tufted Titmouse, were collected from live birds captured both near (0.3 km) and far (4.0 km) from steel production facilities in western Pennsylvania, USA. Tail feathers from birds living near the facilities had significantly higher amounts of manganese embedded in their structure compared to the feathers of birds living farther away. This shows that manganese is present in the environment, is localized at industrial sites, is encountered by birds, and is sequestered in their tissues. Animals could suffer ill health if exposures are high enough. Feather data cannot be used to assess the magnitude of this health risk since metals laid down within feathers are no longer circulating in the birds' bodies. However, our data do suggest that the environmental monitoring of manganese should continue, as inadvertent exposure is still occurring. Human industry and land use has led to the anthropogenic release of manganese (Mn) into the air and soil near manufacturing centers. Overexposure to Mn can cause considerable health problems in birds. We studied whether the concentration of Mn in bird feathers correlates with the distance to point sources of Mn air emissions. Feathers were collected from Tufted Titmice (Baeolophus bicolor) at two sites in western Pennsylvania, USA. One site was in proximity (0.3 km) to a steel plant with documented Mn releases, and the other site was in a different town about 4.0 km away from other steel plants with documented Mn releases. Using the microwave plasma–atomic emission spectrometer (MP–AES), we found that tail feathers collected from nearest to a steel plant had a significantly higher concentration of Mn compared to the samples from the site further from the emission source. A body mass index was calculated for each set of birds; however, the indices did not vary significantly. This is the first published study of Mn sequestration in Tufted Titmouse feathers. Concentrations of essential metals (Cu, Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, Mn, and Zn) and non-essential and toxic metals (Ag, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were quantified in hepatopancreas and abdominal muscle for 73 specimens (37 males and 36 females) of Procambarus clarkii from Lake Trasimeno (Italy) in a year's campaign (July 2018 to June 2019). Elemental concentrations determined in crayfish differed in tissues, seasons, and gender. Both sexes showed lower concentrations in abdominal muscle than in hepatopancreas. Essential metals accumulated in higher concentrations in both tissues than non-essential elements, while associations between essential metals were stronger, especially for females; however, a strong correlation was also observed between Cu and Ag in both sexes. No significant differences in concentrations were recorded between sexes for all seasons; contrarily, significant differences among the total seasonal concentrations (males plus females) were observed only for essential metals and for Ag. Seasonal Toxic Contamination Index (TCI) for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Hg were calculated to assess the toxicity level of metals in the sediments. TCI higher than 1 was detected for Ni only in summer, confirming the close connection between the fluctuating hydrological levels of the shallow Lake Trasimeno, strongly dependent on precipitation, and the metal contamination levels of sediments. This study aims to verify the relevance of Brachidontes pharaonis to assess the ecotoxicological status of polluted sites. For this, the levels of some heavy metals (i.e. Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) and a battery of biomarkers including metallothionein (MT), malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) were assessed in mussels collected from the harbor of Rades (North), and the harbor of Zarzis (South). Moreover, abiotic parameters including temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen were assessed. Results from the ICP-OES showed that the southern population exhibited a higher metal pollution index with significantly higher Zn, Cu, and Pb concentrations. Moreover, the specimens from Zarzis displayed significantly higher levels of MDA, MT, GSH, GPx, SOD, and CAT reflecting higher levels of oxidative and chemical stress. Histopathologies are widely recognized as biomarkers of environmental pollution. In this sense, we evaluated the putative relationship of gill histopathologies and distinct ecological impacts in two regions of Todos os Santos Bay (BTS), Brazil, the largest bay in Northeastern Brazil, South Atlantic. We compared the presence and concentration of metals (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) in water, sediments, and gills and gill histopathologies of a demersal fish (Diapterus rhombeus) and a benthic fish (Ogcocephalus vespertilio). As expected, fish and sediment samples from historically contaminated areas (Aratu) showed more remarkable traces of metals than apparently low-impact areas (Jaguaripe). Likewise, the DTC (degree of tissue change) index and the volume densities were higher in fish caught in Aratu. In addition, the Diapterus rhombeus species showed more potential than Ogcocephalus vespertilio for risk assessment as it showed more responses to the environment reflected on more histopathologies. These data support the effectiveness of incorporating functional gill morphology to monitor impacts on estuarine biota that can be used as a reference to improve the management of ecosystems and prevent harm to human health. The biggest world tailing dam rupture occurred in Brazil in 2015, releasing approximately 32 million m3 of iron tailings in the Doce River watershed, along its 660 km trajectory, reaching the Atlantic Ocean. This disaster significantly altered water and soil properties, increasing the soil metal contents, mainly iron concentration. Little is known about the concentration of toxic elements in plants grown in these areas. Brachiaria decumbens stands out as the most cultivated grass in the affected areas and is widely used for cattle grazing. This study verified the metal contents in soils and in samples of B. decumbens grown in the initial pathway of the debris flow. It was noted that the tailing deposition altered the substrate chemically, increasing Fe by 181% and reducing Zn soil contents by 188%. However, the metal contents in the forage grass were below the toxic limit for cattle feed. In addition, the results suggest that the natural geological characteristics of the region also influenced the metal contents in plants since those plants grown in nonaffected areas also showed high metal concentrations. The impacted area soils had a slightly basic pH, which can reduce the metal availability. Considering that, in the future, these soils would return to their natural acid state, the metal contents in plants grown in the affected regions could probably increase. Thus, long‐term studies are needed to ensure the food safety of the forage production in these areas. This study aimed at determining in animal model the health effects of in situ exposure to landfill chemicals. We evaluated metal concentrations in tissues and cytogenetic and clinico-biochemical effects in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed in situ at Olusosun landfill in Lagos, Nigeria. Male rats (n = 30/point) were exposed at three different points to ambient air and underground water (via drinking) at the landfill for 4-, 8-, 12-, 16-, 20- and 24-week periods. Rats concurrently sited at a residential area, 17.3 km from the landfill site served as control. There was significantly (p < 0.05) time-dependent: accumulation of lead, cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc in the liver and kidney and increase in body weight gain, in exposed rats compared to control. There was significant induction of micronuclei and cytotoxicity (reduced PCE/NCE ratios) in exposed rats. Haematological parameters (RBC, PCV, Hb and WBC) and serum biomarkers of hepato-renal damage [aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities; creatinine and urea levels] revealed significant increases. There was significant increase in hepatic levels of reduced glutathione, malondialdehyde, catalase activities, and decrease in superoxide dismutase, at all periods. Chromium and copper concentrations in the liver and kidney revealed significant positive correlations with either one or more of AST, ALT, LDH and urea. Significant metal concentrations in the underground water and tissues suggest that heavy metals are responsible for the observed alterations, and this may have been via oxidative stress. The presence of metal contaminants in agricultural soils and subsequent uptake by food crops can pose serious human health risk. In this study, we assessed the levels of toxic metals – arsenic, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc – in soils and some edible root tuber crops from two gold mining and two non-mining communities in Ghana to evaluate the potential human health risks associated with exposure to these metals. Concentrations of the metals in 154 soil and edible root tuber samples were analyzed using field portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer prior to confirmation by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Bioaccessibility of the metals was determined using an in vitro physiologically based extraction technique. Concentrations of the metals were generally higher in the gold mining communities than in the non-mining communities. The contamination indices indicated low to moderate contamination of the soil and food crops. Bioaccessibility for the metals varied from 1.7% (Fe) to 62.3 (Mn). Heavy metal pollution in aquatic habitats can be detrimental to both prey and predators in a food web. To investigate the potential for bio-transfer and bioaccumulation of heavy metals between specific trophic levels, 3rd instar larvae of Aedes aegypti were exposed to mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) for three consecutive generations and fed to dragonfly (Tramea cophysa) nymphs. Exposure to Hg caused the highest mortality in A. aegypti larvae and T. cophysa nymphs. Bioaccumulation and life-history parameters of A. aegypti, including egg hatching time, larval and pupal duration, male and female life span, and fecundity, were also evaluated after metals exposure. All life-history parameters except larval duration were significantly affected by heavy metal treatments. Bioaccumulation of metals in A. aegypti larvae and adults gradually and significantly increased from 1st to 3rd generation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study describing the acute toxicity of heavy metals to mosquitoes. Our study shows that heavy metals cause dietary toxicity to an aquatic predator, dragonfly, via trophic transfer, which could have considerable consequences on aquatic ecosystems. Metal accumulation by Spirulina platensis from synthetic effluents with the following chemical composition: Cr/Fe, Cr/Fe/Ni, Cr/Fe/Ni/Zn, and Cr/Fe/Ni/Zn/Cu during repeated cultivation cycle was investigated. Metal ions in different concentrations were added to the culture medium at the exponential and stationary phases of biomass growth and their uptake by biomass was traced using neutron activation analysis. The effect of metal ions on biomass and main biochemical components (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, phycobilins, and β-carotene) was monitored. S. platensis keeps high metal accumulation capacity during 2–3 cultivation cycles, while the metal ions were added in the stationary phase of its growth. By adding metals in the exponential phase of growth in the following concentrations: 10 mg/L of chromium (VI), 5 mg/L of iron, 2 mg/L of zinc, nickel, and copper, Spirulina platensis acted as renewable accumulator only in Cr/Fe system. It maintained the accumulation capacity during three cultivation cycles when exposed to lower concentrations of metal ions. Due to the increasing consumption of platinum (Pt), especially in automobile exhaust catalysts, environmental concentrations of Pt are of emerging concern worldwide. Limited information exists on environmental concentrations, particularly in Pt mining regions, while South Africa is the world's main supplier of Pt. Moreover, other metals are also released as by-products of Pt mining, which might also cause environmental concern. Certain fish parasite taxa have the ability to accumulate metals orders of magnitude higher than their hosts and can be used to reliably detect metals with naturally low abundance. Studies on Pt accumulation in parasite-host systems are limited. Therefore, the aims of the present study were (1) to determine the accumulation of a variety of metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), platinum (Pt), and zinc (Zn)) in helminth fish parasites compared with their hosts from a reference site and an impoundment impacted by Pt mining activities; (2) to assess whether there is a difference between bioaccumulation of metals in infected and uninfected hosts, as well as between hosts with different infection intensities; and (3) to compare the biomarker responses (acetylcholine esterase activity (AChE), metallothionein content (MT), catalase activity (CAT), reduced glutathione content (GSH), malondialdehyde content (MDA), protein carbonyls induction (PC), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), and cellular energy allocation (CEA)) between infected and uninfected hosts. The cestode Atractolytocestus huronensis accumulated significantly higher concentrations of Cr, Ni, and Pt than their host Cyprinus carpio, while the nematode Contracaecum sp. accumulated significantly higher concentrations of Pt and Zn than their host Clarias gariepinus. Infected fish showed lower metal concentrations compared to uninfected fish, while the parasites had no significant effects on their hosts' biomarker responses. The parasites demonstrated the bioavailability of metals derived from Pt mining activities and their ability to resist its toxic effects. The application of sewage sludge (SS) in agriculture is a wastewater recycling method for soil fertilization. The aim of this study was to assess the influences of SS amendment rates (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 g kg-1) on the green-salad leafy plant Eruca sativa. The SS amendment increased soil salinity and organic matter and decreased soil pH. The heavy metal (HM) contents were below the permissible limits as recommended by the Council of the European Communities. An increase in E. sativa morphometric parameters was detected. The leaf, root and total biomasses of E. sativa increased at amendment rates 10, 20 and 30 g kg-1. The applications of 40 and 50 g kg-1 negatively affected the biomass. The highest concentration of the measured HMs in the plant was detected at the 50 g kg-1 amendment rate. The bioaccumulation factors of Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were < 1.0, whereas those of Cu and Mo were > 1. The translocation factors for all HMs were < 1.0 except for Cd and Pb. Even though, SS increased the biomass of E. sativa, SS is not recommended as a fertilizer for E. sativa, since translocation factors of Cd and Pb were >1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to evaluate the biochemical status of Venerupis decussata collected seasonally from two Tunisian coastline lagoons (Ghar El Melh and Boughrara) submitted to different anthropogenic levels. Trace elements were significantly higher in clams from Boughrara, especially during the warm season. Fatty acids, proximate compositions, and nutritional value of both clam populations were higher, appearing to be the best for human consumption principally during the spring season. The principal component analysis was determined, including phospholipids and reserve lipids, revealing a great variation with the exogenous and endogenous factors. Generally, clams from Boughrara had a significant alteration in biochemical composition principally due to the anthropogenic levels and physicochemical fluctuation of this lagoon. Our results reflected the healthy benefit of clam consumption and the use of energy reserves and essential fatty acids as a great biomarker to assess ecological risk in lagoons and other coastal ecosystems. Accumulation of 17 elements in muscle and liver of common nase and vimba bream, caught between February and May 2016 in the Danube River (1173 river kilometer), were assessed by ICP-OES. The principal component analysis grouped muscle and liver samples based on element concentrations (muscle grouped by higher Ba and Sr values, and liver grouped by higher Al, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn values), but no grouping between the two species was observed. Concentrations of Ba, Cu, Fe, and Zn were significantly higher in muscle, and concentrations of Ba, Cd, Cu, and Mn in liver of common nase, while vimba bream had significantly higher concentrations of Cr and Fe in liver. Heavy metals present in mine tailings pollute agroecosystems, put the integrity of the environment at risk and become a major route of exposure to humans. The present study was carried out in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, where millions of tons of mine tailings have been deposited. Soils from this region are used for agricultural activities. Maize (Zea mays) was selected as a test plant, because it is one of the most common and important cereal crops in Mexico and worldwide. Thirteen metals were selected and their bioaccumulation in roots, leaves and fruits were measured in plants cultivated in soils contaminated with mine tailings and those cultivated in non-contaminated soils. The effect of metal bioaccumulation on: macro and micromorphology, size, biomass, coloration leaf patterns and on DNA damage levels in different structures were determined. The bioaccumulation pattern was: root > leaf > fruit, being only Mn and Cr bioaccumulated in all three structures and V in the roots and leaves. A significant effect of metal bioaccumulation on 50% of the size and leaf shape and 55% of the biomass characters in Z. mays exposed plants was detected. Regarding micromorphological characters, a significant effect of metal bioaccumulation on 67% of the leaf characters and on 100% of the color basal leaf characters was noted. The effect of metal bioaccumulation on the induction of DNA damage (leaf > fruit > root) was detected employing single cell gel electrophoresis analysis. An approach, in which multi endpoints are used is necessary to estimate the extent of the detrimental effects of metal pollution on agroecosystem integrity contaminated with mine tailings. Abstract: Metal bioaccumulation and oxidative stress biomarkers were determined in Prochilodus lineatus to understand the effects of short‐term exposure to a triple‐mixture of Zn, Mn, and Fe. Three independent tests were carried out, in which fish were exposed to 3 concentrations of Zn (0.18, 1.0, and 5.0 mg L−1), Mn (0.1, 0.5, and 5.0 mg L−1), and in the mix test to Fe (5.0 mg L−1) and a mixture of Zn (1.0 mg L−1) + Mn (0.5 mg L−1), with and without Fe. After exposure for 96 h, tissues were removed for metal bioaccumulation analysis and oxidative stress biomarkers were determined in liver, along with DNA damage in blood cells. Our results revealed that Zn and Mn were bioaccumulated in fish tissues after exposure to 5.0 mg L−1, whereas Fe only bioaccumulated in muscle and gills after mixture exposure. Results indicated that 1 metal interfered with the other's bioaccumulation. In P. lineatus, 5 mg L−1 of both Mn and Fe were toxic, because damage was observed (lipid peroxidation [LPO] in liver and DNA damage in blood cells), whereas Zn induced liver responses (metallothionein [MT] and reduced glutathione [GSH] increases) to prevent damage. The study compares the amounts of Zea mays, grains, cobs and stalks, harvested on fertilized / unfertilized variant with different fertilizers: M-control, V1-fertilized with sewage sludge 50 t/ha + indigenous volcanic tuff, 5 t/ha, V2- fertilized with sewage sludge 50 t/ha, V3-fertilized with cattle manure, 50 t/ha. The amount of grains and cobs harvested from variant fertilized with cattle manure or sewage sludge mixed with indigenous volcanic tuff were similar. The amount of cobs and grains harvests from variant fertilized with sewage sludge mixed with indigenous volcanic tuff were higher between 15.1-17.5%, respectively 15.4-19.1% than those harvested from variant fertilized with sewage sludge. The indigenous volcanic tuff used as addition at sewage sludge was an important factor for the reduction of bioavailability of metals in the aerial tissues of the plant. The liverwort Lunularia cruciata, known for being a species tolerant to pollution able to colonize urban areas, was collected in the town of Acerra (South Italy) to investigate the biological effects of air pollution in one of the three vertices of the so-called Italian Triangle of Death. The ultrastructural damages observed by transmission electron microscopy in specimens collected in Acerra were compared with samples collected in the city center of Naples and in a small rural site far from sources of air pollution (Riccia, Molise, Southern Italy). The biological response chain to air pollution was investigated considering vitality, photosynthetic efficiency, heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) induction and gene expression levels, and chlorophyll degradation and related ultrastructural alterations. Particularly, a significant increment in Hsp70 expression and occurrence, and modifications in the chloroplasts' ultrastructure can be strictly related to the environmental pollution conditions in the three sites. The Marico River is relatively unaffected by anthropogenic activities. However, metal concentrations-mainly from natural sources-occasionally exceed environmental quality guidelines. Macroinvertebrates are capable to react to these metals through processes such as the induction of metallothioneins (MTs). The aims of this study were to determine whether the induction of MTs can be used as indicator of natural metal exposure in not anthropogenically impacted systems and whether there are relationships between metal concentrations in water, sediment and macroinvertebrates and concomitant MT levels. Positive correlations were found between metals in sediment and macroinvertebrates, while there were no correlations between metal concentrations in water and macroinvertebrates. Even in a not anthropogenically impacted system, a positive correlation existed between trace metal bioaccumulation (e.g. Ni, Pb, Zn) in macroinvertebrates and the induction of MTs. The present study has been elaborated with the aim of justifying the high efficiency of in-situ slaughterhouse sludge recycling and its usage in Lolium perenne cultures. Stabilized slaughterhouse sludge was used to complete the high deficiency in nutrients of the poor terrains. Slaughterhouse sludge represents an excessive, final by product from a meat-processing unit in Western Romania. It contains 59.78-90.77% easily bio-degradable organic substances. Moreover, it has compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorus, total N=1.922-3.318%, total P=1107-1126mg•kg-1D.M. The experimental variants have been prepared, having the following characteristics: control variants of nonfertilized soils and variants of soils fertilized with slaughterhouse sludge, 50t•ha-1. The experimental variants used were arranged in a completely randomized block design, with three replicates each. The efficiency of fertilization with slaughterhouse sludge was a 30-35% rise in the quantity of grass harvested vs. the quantities harvested from the control variants. The quantity of Cd and Pb has been determined from the aerial parts of the harvested plants and they were below the maximum limit admitted by the sanitary regulations in Romania. Cr didn't bio-accumulate in plants at a detection limit. The quantity of other metals determined from the aerial parts of the plants was low: i.e. <10mg•kg-1D.M. for Cu or Ni <50mg•kg-1D.M. for Zn, <150mg•kg-1D.M.for Mn. The capacity to accumulate metal in the lichen communities has been used to identify the level of air pollution due road traffic. Several analyses have been conducted in the study, on tissue from lichens collected from six areas: the park of a town, various sites on the town's freeway and on a county road segment with moderate traffic. The analyzed lichens were from the Parmelia spp. species which grow naturally on trees found in borderline lanes of motorways. Based on the degree of heavy metal accumulation such as Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe Mn, Pb, Ni and Zn in the Parmelia spp. lichens, a correlation has been made, with the road traffic. According to the metal bioaccumulation degree in lichens tissue, it has been established that the sources such as traffic from the outskirts of cities, from the perimeter of gas stations and of county roads continuously spread products which contain these elements, into the atmosphere. The fast information regarding the quality of the air in the environment allows the use of lichens as organism which can indicate environmental conditions and their modification by accumulating substances. Streams and rivers strongly affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) have legal vacuum in terms of assessing the water toxicity, since the use of conventional environmental quality biomarkers is not possible due to the absence of macroinvertebrate organisms. The Asian clam Corbicula fluminea has been widely used as a biomonitor of metal contamination by AMD in freshwater systems. However, these clams are considered an invasive species in Spain and the transplantation in the field study is not allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency. To evaluate the use of the freshwater bivalve C. fluminea as a potential biomonitor for sediments contaminated by AMD, the metal bioavailability and toxicity were investigated in laboratory by exposure of clams to polluted sediments for 14 days. The studied sediments were classified as slightly contaminated with As, Cr, and Ni; moderately contaminated with Co; considerably contaminated with Pb; and heavily contaminated with Cd, Zn, and specially Cu, being reported as very toxic to Microtox. On the fourth day of the exposure, the clams exhibited an increase in concentration of Ga, Ba, Sb, and Bi (more than 100 %), followed by Co, Ni, and Pb (more than 60 %). After the fourth day, a decrease in concentration was observed for almost all metals studied except Ni. An allometric function was used to determine the relationship between the increases in metal concentration in soft tissue and the increasing bioavailable metal concentrations in sediments. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cr, As, Cd, Pb and Hg were determined in 153 samples covering 18 fish species collected from Heilongjiang River, China, and the potential health risks to local residents through fish consumption were estimated. Results revealed that all metals were detected with Cd and Pb having considerably lower detection rate. There were 28.6 % of Lethenteron camtschaticum samples exceeding the limit of inorganic As content established by Chinese legislation. Metal bioaccumulation in fish were poorly correlated with fish sizes, and generally tended to increase with trophic levels. The hazard quotient values of all fish species were far below 1 for general population and fishermen. The carcinogenic risk of As in L. camtschaticum for the local fishermen exceeded the acceptable level of 10 rise in cancer rates, but was considered safe given the migratory habits of the fish. Element concentrations in selected fish species from different trophic levels were analyzed. The following fish species were analyzed: common nase (Chondrostoma nasus), roach (Rutilus rutilus), freshwater bream (Abramis brama), barbel (Barbus barbus), Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), chub (Squalius cephalus), European perch (Perca fluviatilis), wels catfish (Silurus glanis) and northern pike (Esox lucius). Fish were collected from the Međuvršje Reservoir (West Morava River Basin, western Serbia) during 2012, and samples of liver, muscle and gills were analyzed for As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The liver and gills had the highest measured element concentrations, with Cu, Zn, Fe and Sr being the most prominent. The bioaccumulation of metals was species-specific, with the accumulation exhibiting the following trends: Prussian carp > northern pike > freshwater bream > European perch > chub > common nase > barbel > roach > wels catfish; Li>Pb>Z n>Cu>Fe>Ba>Mn>Sr>Cr>As>Mo>Ni>B, in all examined species; for Co, Cd and Hg, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was 0. The current study investigated metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Pb, Mn and Fe) in the habitat and body tissues (blood, liver and kidney) of common skittering frog Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis along the Korang River, Islamabad, Pakistan. Samples were collected from three selected contaminated sites and a reference site at four different occasions from October 2010 to March 2012. All studied metals showed elevated levels in river water, as well as in blood, liver and kidneys of frogs from all contaminated sites. Specifically, Mn showed significantly higher levels in all analysed matrices from contaminated sites compared to the reference site. Histological sections of frog livers exposed to elevated metals showed abnormal hepatocytes, while their kidney sections showed discontinuous glomeruli with dead or ruptured cells exhibiting improper shapes with cytoplasmic depositions. ABSTRACT Many coal-fired electric generating facilities in the United States are discharging higher loads of Hg, Se, and other chemicals to receiving streams due to the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) air pollution control units. There are regulatory concerns about the potential increased uptake of these bioaccumulative trace elements into food webs. We evaluated the concentrations of As, total Hg (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and Se in Ohio River fish collected proximal to coal-fired power plants, of which 75% operate FGD systems. Fillet samples ( n = 50) from 6 fish species representing 3 trophic levels were analyzed. Geometric mean fillet concentrations of THg (wet wt), MeHg (wet wt), and Se (dry wt) in 3 species were 0.136, 0.1181, and 3.19 mg/kg (sauger); 0.123, 0.1013, and 1.56 mg/kg (channel catfish); and 0.127, 0.0914, and 3.30 mg/kg (hybrid striped bass). For all species analyzed, only 3 fillet samples (6% of total) had MeHg concentrations that exceeded the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) human health criterion (0.3 mg/kg wet wt); all of these were freshwater drum aged ≥19 y. None of the samples analyzed exceeded the USEPA proposed muscle and whole body Se thresholds for protection against reproductive effects in freshwater fish. All but 8 fillet samples had a total As concentration less than 1.0 mg/kg dry wt. Mean Se health benefit values (HBVSe) for all species were ≥ 4, indicating that potential Hg-related health risks associated with consumption of Ohio River fish are likely to be offset by adequate Se concentrations. Overall, we observed no measurable evidence of enhanced trace element bioaccumulation associated with proximity to power plant FGD facilities, however, some enhanced bioaccumulation could have occurred in the wastewater mixing zones. Furthermore, available evidence indicates that, due to hydraulic and physical factors, the main stem Ohio River appears to have low net Hg methylation potential. Efficacy of phytoremediation using two macrophytes Azolla pinnata and Lemna minor in decontaminating the toxic effluent released during recovery of metals from polymetallic sea nodules was analysed by applying fish bioassay. The economically important fish, L. rohita, was exposed to both, the Azolla-phytoremediated effluent (APE) and Lemna-phytoremediated effluent (LPE) for assessment of metal bioaccumulation (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Cd) and alterations in biochemical (proteins, lipids, glycogen, cholesterol, AST (aspartate amino transferase), ALT (alanine amino transferase) and ALP (alkaline phosphatase) composition of various tissues. Accumulation of metals (e.g. Mn, Zn, Cu and Fe) decreased in most of the tissues exposed to both the phytoremediated effluents perhaps due to decontamination of metals by the two macrophytes. The significantly recovered concentrations of different biomolecules included glycogen, lipids, cholesterol and proteins. The activities of three marker enzymes (AST, ALT and ALP) in phytoremediated effluent-exposed fish also decreased due to lowering of the toxicity of the decontaminated effluents achieved by phytoremediation. The improvement in different biomolecules and reduction in metal concentration in the fish tissues were better in APE exposed fish. However, their concentrations in both the phytoremediated effluent-exposed fish failed to reach the levels of control fish. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Fe and metallothioneins (MTs) were measured in the gonads of Paracentrotus lividus from Amvrakikos gulf (Ionian Sea, Greece) . Three natural populations were selected; two of them, growing inside the gulf (Agios Thomas and Koronisia), presented higher density and smaller body size than the population living in a coastal area just outside the gulf (Mytikas). Metal and MT levels were not elevated, with the exception of Zn, showing high values related to the reproduction stage of the sea urchins. Significant geographical variations were recorded in the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr and MTs. The highest mean and maximum values of Cu, Zn and MTs were recorded in Agios Thomas while Cd and Cr were higher in Mytikas population. Copper, Zn, Fe and MT concentrations were negatively correlated to the sea urchin body size, while a positive concentration-size relationship was observed for Cd. Although all studied populations grow in a low metal level marine environment, urchins with smaller body size living in a food limited marine environment showed higher gonadosomatic index, metal concentrations and MT levels in their gonads (Agios Thomas and Koronisia) than larger specimens growing in a food unlimited area (Mytikas). Contamination pathways in complex food chains in soil ecosystems can be difficult to elucidate. Molecular analysis of predator gut content can, however, rapidly reveal previously unidentified trophic interactions between invertebrates and thereby uncover pathways of pollutant spread. Here, we measured concentrations of the toxic metals lead, cadmium and mercury in carabid beetle predators and their prey. Invertebrates were sampled at one control and four heavy metal-polluted sites to reveal the impact of diet composition and seasonal variation in prey availability on metal burden in carabids and metal transfer pathways through forest ecosystems. This is the first report, to our knowledge, of carabid diet composition based on PCR analysis of gut contents at the forest community level, rather than in cultivated fields. Extensive screening using group- and species-specific primers revealed that carabids ate primarily earthworms and slugs, as well as smaller numbers of woodlice and springtails. Metal concentrations in carabids correlated with seasonal changes in diet. Mercury accumulated in beetle predators more than in their slug prey. As earthworms, slugs and carabid beetles are the major prey of many birds and mammals, prey-predator transfer and associated toxicity are major risks at mercury-contaminated sites. Zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) concentrations were determined in the tissues (muscle, stomach, liver, gills, skin, and gonads) of five commercial fish species (mullet Liza haematocheilus, flathead Platycephalus indicus, mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius, silver pomfret Pampus argenteus, and sea bass Lateolabrax japonicus) from Laizhou Bay in the Bohai Sea. Metal bioaccumulation was highest in the metabolically active tissues of the gonads and liver. Bioconcentration factors for Zn were higher in all tissues (gonads 44.35, stomach 7.73, gills 7.72, liver 5.61, skin 4.88, and muscle 1.63) than the corresponding values for Cu (gonads 3.50, stomach 3.00, gills 1.60, liver 5.43, skin 1.50, and muscle 0.93). Mackerel tissues accumulated metal to higher concentrations than did other fish species, but bioaccumulation levels were not significantly correlated with the trophic levels of the fish. Zn and Cu concentrations in the tissues were generally negatively correlated with fish length, except for a few tissues of sea bass. Risk assessment based on national and international permissible limits and provisional tolerances for weekly intake of Zn and Cu revealed that the concentrations of these two metals in muscle were relatively low and would not pose hazards to human health. Mercury (Hg) concentrations in the tissues (muscle, stomach, liver, gills, skin, and gonads) of five fish species (mullet Liza ha em atocheil us, flathead fish Platycephalus indicus, sea bass Lateolabrax japonic u s, mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius and silver pomfret Pampus argenteus) collected from Laizhou Bay in the Bohai Sea of China were investigated. The results indicate that Hg bioaccumulation in the five fish was tissue-specific, with the highest levels in the muscle and liver, followed by the stomach and gonads. The lowest levels were found in the gills and skin. Fish at higher trophic levels (flathead fish and sea bass) exhibited higher Hg concentrations than consumers at lower trophic levels. Mercury bioaccumulation tended to be positively correlated with fish length in mullet, silver pomfret, mackerel, and flathead fish, but was negatively correlated with fish length in sea bass. The Hg concentrations in the muscles of all fish species in Laizhou Bay were within the permissible limits of food safety set by national and international criteria. Populations of the marine molluscan bivalve Dosinia exoleta in Galicia (northwest Spain) present lead (Pb) concentrations above the limit for human consumption. Accordingly, its collection for human consumption was forbidden since 2008. The high bioaccumulation of Pb in this species is surprising given that Pb concentrations are not very high in its environment and that other bivalve infaunal species inhabiting the same areas do not show such high Pb contents. This study reports the discovery and description of extracellular granules present in the kidney tubule lumina of this species. Large granules (20−200 μm) mainly composed of calcium phosphate represent between 50% and 75% of the dry weight of the kidneys. Metal analysis revealed that from 78 to 98% of the Pb body burden was present in the kidney, and from 87% to 92% of this Pb within the kidney was contained in metal rich granules. Most of the zinc in these bivalves was also found to be associated with these kidney granules, while other metals, such as copper and cadmium, were associated with other kidney fractions. This study confirms that the high Pb concentrations observed in D. exoleta, and the relationship of Pb concentration with individual size, are due to the inclusion of Pb in kidney granules that accumulate in the kidney lumen over the course of the bivalve’s life. Spatial and temporal variability of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Fe and Mn and metallothionein (MT) concentrations were determined in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis from Elefsis bay (Saronikos gulf, Greece). Higher concentrations of both metal concentrations and MTs were recorded in mussels inhabiting industrial locations (steelworks and shipyard), indicating a markedly higher metal bioavailability. However at these sites, located at the eastern part of the bay, mussel metal concentrations were not always correlated with both seawater metal concentrations and MTs possibly due to different time scales of integration of the metal sources into mussels and/or the participation of other metal regulatory mechanisms except MT induction. The pattern of the temporal variation of mussel metal concentrations and the MT levels was similar among stations with higher values during the winter-spring season and lower during the summer-autumn period. Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are reported to impact plant growth in hydroponic systems. This study describes the impact of commercial CuO (<50 nm) and ZnO (<100 nm) NPs on wheat ( Triticum aestivum) grown in a solid matrix, sand. The NPs contained both metallic and non-metallic impurities to different extents. Dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy (AFM) assessments confirmed aggregation of the NPs to submicron sizes. AFM showed transformation of ZnO NPs from initial rhomboid shapes in water to elongated rods in the aqueous phase of the sand matrix. Solubilization of metals occurred in the sand at similar rates from CuO or ZnO NPs as their bulk equivalents. Amendment of the sand with 500 mg Cu and Zn/kg sand from the NPs significantly ( p = 0.05) reduced root growth, but only CuO NPs impaired shoot growth; growth reductions were less with the bulk amendments. Dissolved Cu from CuO NPs contributed to their phytotoxicity but Zn release did not account for the changes in plant growth. Bioaccumulation of Cu, mainly as CuO and Cu(I)-sulfur complexes, and Zn as Zn-phosphate was detected in the shoots of NP-challenged plants. Total Cu and Zn levels in shoot were similar whether NP or bulk materials were used. Oxidative stress in the NP-treated plants was evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation and oxidized glutathione in roots and decreased chlorophyll content in shoots; higher peroxidase and catalase activities were present in roots. These findings correlate with the NPs causing increased production of reactive oxygen species. The accumulation of Cu and Zn from NPs into edible plants has relevance to the food chain. We studied the influence of sediment geochemistry on bioavailability of As, Cd, and Cr in deposit-feeding polychaetes. Metal phase speciation in sediments was determined with a sequential extraction scheme, and assimilation efficiencies (AEs) of ingested metals were determined by pulse-chase feeding experiments using γ-emitting isotopes. Worms were fed sediments collected from geochemically diverse estuaries that were labeled by sorbing dissolved radiotracers or mixing with radiolabeled algae. Uptake of sediment-bound metals was compared with that from labeled algae or goethite. Metal AEs showed a positive relationship with the exchangeable and carbonate sedimentary fractions, whereas metals in iron and manganese oxides and acid-volatile sulfides, or in pyrite and other refractory material, were inversely correlated with AEs. Arsenic was most bioavailable from algae (72%), less from sediments mixed with algae (24-70%) and least from sediments labeled directly (1-12%). Arsenic AEs in sediments labeled directly showed a positive correlation with sedimentary Mn and Al and negative correlation with Fe. Cadmium AEs were positively correlated with salinity and negatively correlated with sedimentary organic C. The AEs of Cr from sediments or algae were less than 5%, but they were 34% from pure goethite. The bioavailability of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb from two metal-contaminated sediments (Bidassoa and Dunkerque) was studied using Crassostrea gigas larvae exposed to sediment elutriates. The metal contents within the sediments, the larvae and larval growth, the condition index, and the induction of metallothionein in the larvae were measured. The larval growth and condition index were only affected after exposure to the highest elutriates concentration (5 to 25%) from the most contaminated sediment (Dunkerque). Bioaccumulation of all metals was observed in larvae exposed to Dunkerque elutriatre; only Cu bioaccumulation was observed in the Bidassoa elutriate. The results from larvae exposed to both sediment elutriates show a strong correlation between bioaccumulated metal considered individually or in combination and the metallothionein level in larvae presenting no detrimental effect. On the other hand, in the case of larvae exposed to the highest Dunkerque elutriate concentration and showing the highest metal body burden, we observed a drop in the metallothionein level. These results indicate that metallothionein is a more sensitive indicator of heavy metal pollution than physiological endpoints taken into account in bioassays and could be proposed as an early biomarker of metal exposure in larvae. We investigated the bioaccumulation of metals (Cd, Se, and Zn) in different juvenile sizes of black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegeli by applying a biokinetic model. A series of experiments were conducted to determine the physiological kinetic parameters, including uptake rate constant of waterborne metals, ingestion rate, assimilation efficiency of dietary metals, efflux rate constant, and specific growth rate as a function of fish size. Body concentration of metals as a function of body size was then simulated by the kinetic model and compared with the actual measurements. The uptake rate constants decreased with increasing fish size, with an allometric exponent (b) of 0.615 to 0.662. Ingestion rate was also negatively correlated with the fish size (b = -0.604). Assimilation efficiencies of Cd were independent of body size, whereas those of Se and Zn increased with fish size. In contrast, efflux rate constants and growth rate constants for metals were comparable in different sizes of fish. Predicted concentrations of Cd and Zn were comparable to actual measurements and were negatively correlated with fish size. Ingestion rate was the most important parameter accounting for the size-dependent bioaccumulation of metals, followed by dietary assimilation. We further showed that the trophic transfer potentials of Se and Zn were >1 in smaller fish but then reduced to <1 in larger ones, suggesting that trophic transfer potentials are highly size dependent in marine fish. Concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and nickel were measured in soils, house mice (Mus musculus), and the main food items of this omnivorous mouse to examine the occurrence of these metals in selected components of a seasonal wetland. Soil concentrations of copper, lead, and (in some areas) nickel were elevated, but extractable soil concentrations indicated low bioavailability of metals. Levels of most metals in mice and composited arthropods were consistent with reference site concentrations from other studies. However, copper was found to be particularly mobile within the local ecosystem and accumulated in house mouse carcasses and composited arthropods at substantial levels. Metal residues in Scirpus robustus (alkali bulrush) roots exceeded those in seeds, consistent with patterns of bioaccumulation commonly observed in plants. Uptake and bioaccumulation factors for S. robustus seeds and roots, arthropods, and mouse carcasses and livers are reported. Concentrations of lead and nickel in S. robustus roots exhibited significant linear relationships with levels in soils. Copper levels in S. robustus seeds varied significantly with those in house mouse livers, suggesting that trophic transfer of copper from this food source to mice occurred. However, other spatial patterns of bioaccumulation in S. robustus and house mice relative to soil/seed concentrations were absent. The natural regeneration of forests in mining areas is typically hampered by edaphic stress. Semiarid conditions add a climatic stress that challenges the restoration of these harsh ecosystems. This is the case of Tetraclinisarticulata (Vahl) Masters mixed forests in the Western Mediterranean region colonizing mining structures abandoned three decades ago. We studied the factors controlling the natural establishment of nine shrub and tree species key in these forests in eight metal mine tailings in SE Spain. In addition, we assessed the success of reintroducing 1480 individuals of the nine species 15 months after planting in one of the tailings. Specifically, we analyzed the effect of (i) species identity in terms of sapling survival, growth, nutritional status and metal bioaccumulation, and (ii) adding organic amendments into the planting holes on the same parameters. Our results indicated that natural colonization is a recent process, with seedling cohorts that vary up to two orders of magnitude among species and a practical absence of adult plants in most species excepting T. articulata. We identified seed limitation as a key factor controlling seedling density, which was significantly explained by the distance from the border of the tailing to the closest adult out of the tailing. Soil metal concentration did not have any explanatory power on the density of naturally-established seedlings, whereas soil fertility was relevant only for Rhamnus lycioides L. Overall survival of planted individuals was over 80%, survival and growth remarkably differing among species. Organic amendments had neutral or negative effects on plant survival, but significantly increased the growth of survivors despite their modest effects on leaf nutrient contents. Most species showed high metal bioaccumulation, which was exacerbated by organic amendments. We discuss how biodiversity conservation programs can benefit from the affordable and successful plantation of stress-tolerant local species, but come at the expense of potential metal transfer through trophic webs. Agroforestry practices coupled with wastewater irrigation systems are sustainable strategies for water management. The performance of these practices could be improved by rhizobioaugmentation. This approach would be particularly useful in developing countries where it can be used as a low-cost tool to control widespread environmental contaminations. The main objectives of the present study are to (1) determine the effects of wastewater on metal/nutrient contents in soils, (2) assess the pattern of metals in Casuarina glauca, and (3) analyze the effects of rhizobioaugmentation of C. glauca growing in industrial wastewater–irrigated agricultural soil using N-fixing Frankia symbionts. Overall, the wastewater treatment significantly increases the levels of total Pb, B, Cr, Mn, Na, Sr, Zn, As, Co, Sb, Sn, and Fe. Only a small portion of total metals/nutrients were phytoavailable. The bioaccumulation in roots of all the metals/nutrients measured was high while the translocation from roots to aerial parts showed insignificant level of movement of the elements tested. Based on bioavailable metals/nutrients, the bioaccumulation factors were 34, 41, 94, 196, 584, 587, 1859, and 9917 for Mg, As, Ni, Mn, Cu, Co, Cr, and Pb, respectively. Hence, C. glauca is classified as a metal excluder. Rhizobioaugmentation with Frankia resulted in an increase or a decrease of metals/nutrients in soil depending on the bacterial strain used and the metal/nutrient element. It also increased significantly the bioaccumulation in roots of some metals and the uptake of key nutrients such as Ca, Na, and K by Casuarina plants. Overall, the results of the present study showed that C. glauca is suitable for phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soils. The Kola nuclear power plant, which discharges warm water into one of the bays of subarctic Lake Imandra, significantly changes fish habitats. The temperature gradient of the lake is between 2 and 8 °C, which makes it significantly different from the natural temperature of the lake water. The stenothermal cold-water native species (lake whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.)), living for more than 40 years under conditions of thermal pollution, has adapted to this stressor. Moreover, this population differs favorably from the population in the natural-temperature environment in terms of its physiological state. Firstly, the hemoglobin concentrations in the fish blood are in the range of the ecological optimum, and secondly, it has a higher somatic growth, as estimated by Fulton's condition factor. One of its main adaptive mechanisms of ion regulation is an intense metabolism of Na due to the high respiratory activity of the whitefish in warmer water. An increased accumulation of Rb and excretion of Se, Mo, and Si are associated more or less with that feature. Under conditions of an increased water temperature, the main metabolic need is due to a deficiency of Se in fish. The intensive metabolism of selenoproteins may involve risks of toxic effects and the bioaccumulation of Hg, As, and Cu in cases of increased existing stressors or the appearance of new ones.
