The Qanat (also known as kariz) is one of the significant water resources in many arid and semiarid regions. The present research aims to use machine learning techniques for Qanat discharge (QD) prediction and find a practical model that predicts QD well. Gene expression programming (GEP), artificial neural network (ANN), group method of data handling (GMDH), least-square support vector machine (LSSVM) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), are employed to predict one-, two-, and five-months time-step ahead QD in an unconfined aquifer. QD for one, two, and three lag-times (QDt−1, QDt−2, QDt−3), QD for adjacent Qanat, the main meteorological components (Tt, ETt, Pt) and GWL for one, two, and three lag-times are utilized as input dataset to accomplish accurate QD prediction. The GMDH model, according to its best results, had promising accuracy in predicting multi-step ahead monthly QD, followed by the LSSVM, ANFIS, ANN and GEP, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tube dwelling of chironomids often dominates benthic communities in freshwater ecosystems with high population density and pumping rates. This strongly enhances exchange across the sediment-water interface and impacts biogeochemical processes. Such processes are investigated by tracking the flow initiated by chironomid's pumping through and around burrows using laboratory and computer models. We used modeling and experimental results of other authors considering U-shaped burrows embedded in the sediment to improve process-understanding and prove the plausibility of an integral modeling approach. In contrast to coupled models of pipe (burrow), surface water (overlying water column) and groundwater flow (surrounding sediment), we present a novel high-resolution integral formulation for the porous medium-surface water domain (called porousInter as part of OpenFOAM (Open Field Operation and Manipulation)). This approach solves the extended version of the Navier-Stokes equations allowing simultaneous flow simulation in the burrow, the overlying water column and the surrounding sediment to better account for feedback effects between the sediment and surface water. Using similar model setup as of a coupled approach, we performed scenarios of flow through burrow and sediment triggered by pumping in the center of the burrow. Plausible agreement of our integral model with results of a coupled model and experimental results was obtained when comparing flow patterns around the burrows, between two burrow branches and at burrow inlet and outlet. Pumping at a large rate can convert a confined flow to a confined–unconfined one in a confined aquifer. In this paper, a new semianalytical solution is proposed to investigate the mechanism of transient confined–unconfined flow under the non-Darcian condition in a fully penetrated confined aquifer. By using Izbash's equation, a new linearization method was developed to approximate the nonlinear terms of the mathematical model of pumping-induced flow. The solution was derived by using the Laplace transform. The acceptability of the proposed solutions was verified by comparisons with numerical solutions by COMSOL Multiphysics and an analytical solution. The effects of the non-Darcian index, hydraulic conductivity, and the storativity ratio on developments of drawdown and the transient unconfined region were especially investigated. It is indicated that the non-Darcian index and the hydraulic conductivity have a positive effect on the drawdown in the confined region and a negative effect on that in the confined region, respectively. Otherwise, the drawdown simulation is negatively related to the storativity ratio. The groundwater divide is a key feature of river basins and significantly influenced by subsurface hydrological processes. For an unconfined aquifer between two parallel rivers or ditches, it has long been defined as the top of the water table based on the Dupuit–Forchheimer approximation. However, the exact groundwater divide is subject to the interface between two local flow systems transporting groundwater to rivers from the infiltration recharge. This study contributes a new analytical model for two‐dimensional groundwater flow between rivers of different water levels. The flownet is delineated in the model to identify groundwater flow systems and the exact groundwater divide. Formulas with two dimensionless parameters are derived to determine the distributed hydraulic head, the top of the water table and the groundwater divide. The locations of the groundwater divide and the top of the water table are not the same. The distance between them in horizontal can reach up to 8.9% of the distance between rivers. Numerical verifications indicate that simplifications in the analytical model do not significantly cause misestimates in the location of the groundwater divide. In contrast, the Dupuit–Forchheimer approximation yields an incorrect water table shape. The new analytical model is applied to investigate groundwater divides in the Loess Plateau, China, with a Monte Carlo simulation process taking into account the uncertainties in the parameters. The Theis solution is perhaps the most influential and frequently used analytical model in groundwater hydrology. Its publication in 1935 led to immediate and continued use for simulating hydraulic head drawdown, in both confined and unconfined aquifers, as a tool in aquifer parameter estimation. For educational purposes, the Theis solution and the related Jacob's approximation often serve as the backbone for teaching pumping-well theory, including topics such as boundary conditions in aquifers, image well theory, linear superposition, and pumping-induced streamflow depletion. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the Theis solution is critical for groundwater engineers and hydrologists. However, the solution often is presented as a "black box", neglecting the actual origins of its derivation and accompanying physical context. This can lead to misconceptions about the model and its inherent limitations. In this paper, a physically based detailed derivation of the Theis solution is presented, along with a method of calculating drawdown from a pumping well without resorting to the final Theis equation. Examples of both constant-rate pumping and variable-rate pumping are presented and compared to results using the original Theis solution. In particular, variable pumping rates are accounted for by direct numerical integration of an earlier form in the original Theis derivation, removing the need for linear superposition of solutions in time. In this way, it is hoped the paper will provide a method of calculation that ties the model user to the physical meaning of the solution, including its assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Groundwater sampled at the outlets of uncased flowing wells in a thick unconfined aquifer, which has undergone mixing, has been found to have hydrochemistry similar to deep groundwater in discharge areas. To identify the hydrodynamic causes, transient models of groundwater flow and age in a three-dimensional homogeneous unit basin with flowing wells are constructed to obtain flow rates in wells and groundwater mean age around wells. Inflow of groundwater to the well in the deep part leads to mixing of groundwater from different sources, and the finally mixed groundwater is found to have the same age as groundwater in the aquifer at a specific depth, termed the equivalent position (EP). EP is always found in the lower half of the flowing well, indicating that a mixed sample at the outlet could represent deep groundwater. Outflow from the well to the unconfined aquifer in the shallow part results in aging of groundwater around the well. For fully penetrating flowing wells in confined aquifers, EP is found in the upper half of the aquifer. The different relative depths of EP to the screen interval in the two types of flowing wells are mainly due to the profiles of horizontal velocity in the inflow segment, which is basically uniform in a confined aquifer but increases from zero to a maximum value in unconfined aquifers. Thus, groundwater at the outlets of topography-controlled flowing wells is a window of the deep part of a basin, and existing long-screen wells could have the potential for groundwater sampling. Explicit expressions for the vector fields of specific discharge and scalar fields of stream functions and piezometric heads in a Darcian steady-state essentially two-dimensional (2-D) flow through a three-component composite representing a vertical or horizontal well with a gravel pack and annular skin are obtained and analysed. The refraction conditions along two concentric circles, which represent interfaces between three porous media of contrasting hydraulic conductivities, are exactly satisfied. Flow nets, isotachs, the locus of the stagnation point bounding the capture zone of the well, and functionals quantifying area-averaged hydraulic characteristics are found. The flow topology and drawdowns near the well illustrate that at small pumping rates a common concept of a purely radial 1-D flow can be superficially plausible but misleading. Well ageing is mostly caused by mechanical and biogeochemical clogging processes, which affect the gravel pack, screen slots and casing. Clogging deposits increase head losses due to a constriction of the hydraulically effective area. For this study, clogging is mimicked by systematically reducing the gravel pack porosity, the screen open area and the nominal inner casing diameter. Groundwater flow velocity strongly increases close to the well, inducing inertial and turbulent flow components. Therefore, gravel pack head losses were calculated using the Forchheimer-Engelund equation, in conjunction with the Kozeny-Carman equation, which relates gravel pack porosity and hydraulic conductivity. Screen losses were assessed using the Orifice equation and turbulent casing losses with the Darcy-Weisbach equation. For the settings chosen here, a dramatic increase of head losses occurs when the clogging has reduced the effective porosity in the gravel pack by ~65%, the open area of the screen by ≥98%, and the casing diameter by ~50%. Since the latter two conditions are rarely reached in actual wells, the clogging of the gravel pack is the decisive parameter that controls well ageing. Regular monitoring of the well yield is therefore needed, since processes in the gravel pack are difficult to track directly. In the Kerdous Inlier, groundwater is the only source of drinking and irrigation water and sustainable management requires an understanding of the hydrogeological setting. In the lower Ait Mansour study site, the main aquifer is represented by a karstified and fractured sequence of Infra and Lower Cambrian carbonates. In the Ameln study site, fractured Neoproterozoic quartzites of the Jebel Lkest build the main aquifer. Isotopic signatures of groundwater indicated direct groundwater recharge in both study sites. In the Ait Mansour study site, isotopic composition implied recharge at high altitudes and groundwater flow in the SE direction. Two major flow paths were identified in the Ameln study site: a shallow and rapid movement until spring discharge at the hill slopes and another deeper one into the Ameln Valley. Hydrochemical facies at both study sites were of Ca-Mg-HCO3 type and derived from dolomite and plagioclase weathering. Increased NO3-, SO42-, and Cl− concentrations in groundwater indicated an anthropogenic influence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aquifer homogeneity is usually assumed when interpreting the results of pumping and slug tests, although aquifers are essentially heterogeneous. The aim of this study is to present a method of determining the transmissivities of dual-permeability water-bearing formations based on slug tests such as the pressure-induced permeability test. A bi-exponential rate-of-rise curve is typically observed during many of these tests conducted in heterogeneous formations. The work involved analyzing curves deviating from the exponential rise recorded at the Belchatow Lignite Mine in central Poland, where a significant number of permeability tests have been conducted. In most cases, bi-exponential movement was observed in piezometers with a screen installed in layered sediments, each with a different hydraulic conductivity, or in fissured rock. The possibility to identify the flow properties of these geological formations was analyzed. For each piezometer installed in such formations, a set of two transmissivity values was calculated piecewise based on the interpretation algorithm of the pressure-induced permeability test—one value for the first (steeper) part of the obtained rate-of-rise curve, and a second value for the latter part of the curve. The results of transmissivity estimation for each piezometer are shown. The discussion presents the limitations of the interpretational method and suggests future modeling plans. The spatial coverage of hydraulic conductivity (K) values for large-scale groundwater investigations is often poor because of the high costs associated with hydraulic testing and the large areas under investigation. Domestic water wells are ubiquitous and their well logs represent an untapped resource of information that includes mandatory specific-capacity tests, from which K can be estimated. These specific-capacity tests are routinely conducted at such low pumping rates that well losses are normally insignificant. In this study, a simple and practical approach to augmenting high-quality K values with reconnaissance-level K values from water-well specific-capacity tests is assessed. The integration of lesser quality K values from specific-capacity tests with a high-quality K data set is assessed through comparisons at two different scales: study-area-wide (a 600-km2 area in Ontario, Canada) and in a single geological formation within a portion of the broader study area (200 km2). Results of the comparisons demonstrate that reconnaissance-level K estimates from specific-capacity tests approximate the ranges and distributions of the high-quality K values. Sufficient detail about the physical basis and assumptions that are invoked in the development of the approach are presented here so that it can be applied with confidence by practitioners seeking to enhance their spatial coverage of K values with specific-capacity tests. Purpose: In order to look into the water flow law in tension saturated zone (TSZ), which is also called the capillary fringe, one-dimensional seepage experiment in four kinds of porous medium (permeable stone, fine sand, clay, and ceramic plate) was carried out. The permeation flux and apparent permeability of the four kinds of porous media were discussed. The existence of the threshold pressure gradient was also discussed. Materials and methods: A special experimental device was designed and the TSZ was formed by artificially controlling the hydraulic conditions. Data were collected and analyzed to show the basic hydraulic characteristics of the four samples. Results and discussion: Seepage in the porous media of high permeability (permeable stone and fine sand) under tension saturated conditions kept to Darcy's law. But in clay and ceramic plate, which are of low permeability, the relation between permeation flux and hydraulic gradient was controlled by hydraulic gradient, and when hydraulic gradient increased to a specific value, water flow obeyed Darcy's law and apparent hydraulic conductivity was a constant value equal to that under saturation. The existence of the threshold pressure gradient was not proven when flow occurred in clay and ceramic plate which are of low permeability. Conclusions: Water flow law in the TSZ was discussed by conducting indoor experiments through which we took a brief look at the seepage characteristics in different porous media in the unique region of the vadose zone and verified the common percept of unsaturated flow. Aquifer parameters are useful for modeling sea water intrusion and other groundwater management issues in coastal areas. Oscillations in tide-induced groundwater levels contain important information of the properties of coastal aquifers and measurements of tidal effects can be employed to estimate the aquifer parameters. The solution to the transient groundwater flow model in a coastal confined aquifer with a sinusoidal fluctuation of the tide shows that the amplitude of groundwater levels is smaller than the tide, the tidal efficiency decreases exponentially with distance from the coast and the time lag increases linearly with distance from the coast. The aquifer property described by the ratio of storativity to transmissivity can be estimated if the amplitude (or tidal efficiency) and the time lag of groundwater levels are obtained based on filed measurements of tidal effects. Principle of these tidal methods is presented in this article, including those with one observation well and two observation wells. Hourly observations of the tide and groundwater levels at 14 observation wells in the coastal aquifer near Beihai, China are used to illustrate the application of these methods. The estimated ratio of storativity to transmissivity of the confined aquifer ranges from 1.66 × 10 to 4.84 × 10 d/m. A simple descriptive-statistical approach is proposed for evaluating the transmissivity of fractured-bedrock under field conditions. Based on standard well logging and identification of structural discontinuities from borehole televiewer, the approach consists of four steps: (1) determination of discontinuity properties, namely the frequency of discontinuities and the ratio of open fractures along the borehole; (2) ranking the three well logs and the discontinuity properties into tertiles (high-to-low); (3) performing statistical analysis ( F-test) for the three well logs to assess the significance of open fractures on the water-transmitting potential and then assigned a weighting factor; and (4) a semi-quantitative indicator, RGVFO, is obtained by multiplying all predictive indexes and weighting factors. It is a multi-criteria evaluation procedure that elucidates the quantitative and qualitative importance of all selected geophysical indexes. A high cross-correlation between transmissivity to RGVFO value is found, which indicates that by a combined consideration of well logging and structural discontinuities, an appropriate estimate of bedrock water-transmitting potential can be derived. While in catchment and hillslope hydrology a more nuanced approach is now taken to streamflow recession analysis, in the context of major aquifers it is commonly still assumed that the groundwater head recession rate will take exponential form, an idea originally proposed in the 19th Century. However it is shown here that, in early times, the groundwater head recession in a major aquifer should take an almost straight line form with a rate approximately equal to the long-term recharge rate divided by the aquifer storage coefficient. The length of this phase can be estimated from an analytical expression derived in the paper which depends on the aquifer diffusivity, length scale, and the position of the monitoring point. A transitional phase then leads to an exponential phase after some critical time which is independent of the position of the monitoring point. Major aquifers in a state of periodic quasi-steady state are expected to have rates of groundwater flux recession which deviate little from the average rate of groundwater recharge. Where quasi-exponential groundwater declines are observed in nature, their form may be diagnostic of particular types of aquifer properties and/or boundary effects, such as proximity to drainage boundaries, variations in transmissivity with hydraulic head, storage changes due to pumping, nonequilibrium flow at a range of spatial and temporal scales, and variations in specific yield with depth. We have developed a drawdown solution for a partially penetrating well under constant flux pumping in a confined aquifer with finite thickness. The predictions of our solution diverge from the predictions of Hantush's solution (), particularly for problems with low ratios of well screen length to aquifer thickness. Furthermore, the predicted drawdown from Hantush's solution () differs from that of Yang et al.'s solution Water Resour Res 42:W0552, () only near the well and at small time values as indicated in Yang et al. Water Resour Res 42:W0552, (). Our solution is based on Green's function with a columnar source (sink) that represents pumping from a finite-radius well. Hantush's solution () and Yang et al.'s solution Water Resour Res 42:W0552, (), however, were derived from Laplace transform techniques for pumping in a well with an infinitesimal and a finite radius, respectively.
