Purpose: Designing metadata ontology model for semantic representation of Theses by using the SPAR (Semantic Publishing and Referencing) Ontologies. Method: This study was an applied form and two methods were used, Content Analysis and mapping. The metadata of 69 theses and dissertations on the National Library and Archive of Iran in three Databases: 1) Digital Library of National Library and Archive of Iran. 2) Rasa Software and 3) Ganj in the Iranian Research Institute for Information Science and Technology were selected modified and completed by mapping. On the other hand, by analyzing the entities of each SPAR ontology and suggesting another entity to the researcher, the checklist was formed. This checklist included classes, properties, and individuals. At last, by entering them into Protégé software version 5.5, the model of metadata ontology, MdOntTDs, was drawn. Findings: Findings identified deficiencies in the existence of four important metadata elements (subject, supervisor, advisor, and abstract) in RASA and NLAI Digital Library. Among the 18 SPAR Ontologies, the most entities were selected from FaBiO, FRAPO, and CiTO respectively. All entities of BiDO, BiRO, C4O, Fivestar, FR, FRBR, PO, PRO, PSO, and PWO were suitable for theses. 195 individuals from 6 SPAR Ontologies, 292 individuals labeled with MdTDs from theses, and 100 individuals labeled with SUNMdTDs were selected by the researcher and entered into the software. 1558 entities categorized by class, Properties (object, data, and Annotation), and individuals along with the description and definition of each entity were placed in the software, in the form of hierarchical and determining axioms for classes. And specifying domain and range for relationships. Finally, the RDF graph was drawn using the OntoGraf plugin, and the final Model, MdOntTDs was developed. this research has proposed three new types of metadata: 1) Except for the existing keywords, topics have been categorized and modeled up to three levels including 4 main categories, 16 subcategories, and many units. Each of these final topics has been related to "hasSubject" and "isSubjectOf" properties. 2) The research methods of Theses that were connected with "hasMethod" and "used in" properties. 3) The papers taken from Theses were also searched, as far as possible, and were connected with "hasJournalArticle" and "journalArticleOf" properties. Conclusion: This model, if implemented, can overcome keyword search limitations, the problem of linking and Data sharing on the web, and the inconsistency of data. In the software, classes and their related individuals are visible in the form of a hierarchical network in RDF triples, and the connection between entities with increasing access points promises deeper semantic searches. Undergraduate Biomedical Science dissertations are the culmination of a student's academic journey and allow students to refine technical proficiencies, experimental design and data analysis. However, traditional dissertation projects may not fully meet the requirements of diverse student populations and employer's needs. This research project aims to assess the effectiveness of modifying the assessment format for final-year projects, incorporating elements such as lay summaries, project proposals, scientific research papers, and oral poster defences. The objective was to cultivate higher-order critical thinking skills and enhance written and verbal communication competencies, in addition to developing a suite of transferable skills which are highly sought by employers. Quantitative data were primarily generated via end-of-module feedback reports and the module satisfaction survey. Students rated their confidence in a suite of transferable skills pre and post-completion of the project module using a fourpoint Likert scale. Staff perceptions (n = 30) and module board reports were also evaluated. For all data, a paired t-test for related groups was conducted. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data using the Braun and Clark Framework. The end-of-module feedback was overwhelmingly positive with all students agreeing that they were satisfied with the module. Students reported a statistically significant increase in confidence within 11 transferable skills which are considered core within the industry, for example, critical thinking, problemsolving and time management. Furthermore, the mean module mark increased following the module redesign from 66.3% ± 0.2% in 2019 to 70.9% ± 0.6% in 2020 (p ≤ 0.05). Staff provided free text comments, reporting an overall improvement in the module, a reduction in workload and a better teaching experience. Students exhibited appreciation of the new module structure, assessment suit and creative liberty within the projects. The redesigned project module enhanced the teaching experience for staff, whilst students appreciated the diverse range of projects and assessments that featured shorter word limits and a creative flair. Objective: Bibliometric analysis is a valuable method for assessing the scientific landscape of a given field. In this study, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of dissertation research in Azerbaijan was given to highlight the chronological trends of academic scientific achievements in the country, aiming to provide a broad overview of the research output and trends in the country's academic community. Methods: Based on various academic databases (HAC) and the collections of the National Library of Azerbaijan, the main repository of the country, a significant collection of existing dissertations has been assembled. With the help of bibliometric methods, the growth dynamics of these dissertations by decades and distribution by scientific fields were studied. Results: The results obtained reflect the interest in academic research in the country and indicate a noticeable increase in the productivity of dissertation research in Azerbaijan over the years. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis is a chronological overview of dissertation research in Azerbaijan, offering valuable information to both the public and scholars and researchers. The Council on Higher Education (CHE)'s report on the doctoral programme review states that offering postgraduate programmes seems to be a challenge to some South African universities. Amongst others, the report expresses that postgraduate supervision at universities suffers from many challenges, some of which result in students being delayed or not completing their studies. Underpinned by Archer's (1998) theory of the interplay between structure, culture, and agency (support programmes), the study seeks to examine factors that hinder postgraduate students' completion of their dissertations and theses. The study adopted narrative research where the qualitative design was used. Postgraduate students (Master and Doctoral) who have registered for these programmes repeatedly in the university served as participants in the study. The purposive sample was used to sample eight postgraduate students who have frequently registered for more than the required residency period. Semi-structured questions were formulated to guide data collection. Data was collected through a focus group of eight Master and Doctoral students. Collected data were analysed using the content analysis method. Summary: There has been substantial discussion aimed at investigating the extent to which academic researchers can or should "use" large language models, such as ChatGPT and Bard, in their research papers. However, there seems to have been limited attention given to the extent to which students can use these tools for the development of theses, proposals and dissertations. This paper pushes the arguments from focusing on academic researchers, journal papers, and technical meetings to considering those theses and dissertations, raising several questions and concerns. Ultimately, university policies need to address these issues, but if publisher and editor responses and alternative business uses are a signal of that direction, consensus may be difficult to achieve. A bibliometric analysis was conducted over the bibliographies of chemistry and physics doctoral dissertations between 1970 and 2020 to ascertain what types of documents are cited, average ages of cited references and overall changes of dissertation references that have occurred with the advent of electronic resources. The study reviewed 50 dissertations for each discipline with 10 dissertations from each decade (n = 100). Results measured 12,065 total references and found that the median age of journals increased in both chemistry and physics, doubling from 2010 to 2020. Only a few dissertation studies have been done on a longitudinal base to evaluate changes in publication trends. Similarities between the two disciplines with increases in the percentages of journal articles and declines in the number of books, other dissertations, and material types are calculated. Documentary research in education can often be overlooked as an approach to exploring policy and practice issues, particularly for dissertation research projects. However, a range of documents can offer valuable data. In particular, school inspection documentation can be an illuminating and accessible source. Building on my recent research and teaching experiences, this paper provides a guide to utilising school inspection documentation from the Scottish context as primary sources for research dissertations in education and other disciplines. The intention is to support students and researchers undertaking research projects to navigate these sources confidently and to enable them to develop insightful analyses and discussions. Doctoral education is a key feature of university systems, as well as a basic foundation of scientific practice. That period culminates in a dissertation and examination of the candidate that has been studied from several points of view. This paper reports the results of an analysis on the evolution and characteristics of gender imbalance of a complete doctoral system for a wide period of time. Data from the database Teseo was used in order to identify the individuals involved in the process, the scientific fields in which the dissertations where classified, and the institutions in which the examination took place. Results: the Spanish system shows a clear evolution towards gender balance, but also some concerning trends that are worth tracking. Seemingly, STEM disciplines look to be evolving more slowly than other branches of science in several aspects. A leaky pipeline is characterized in this system around the roles of supervisors, candidates, members and chairs of the dissertation committees. We conducted a content analysis of generic qualitative counseling dissertations (GQR; N = 70), examining their methodological justifications, coherence, and trustworthiness. Dissertations authors often presented vague methodological justifications. Findings have implications for constructing methodological justifications, integrating relevant literature, and awareness of how GQR compares to other qualitative methodologies. This study is a citation analysis of serials in postgraduate Theses and dissertations of library and information science of public universities in Southeast Nigeria submitted from 2013 to 2021. The study was guide by five research questions in line with the objectives of the study. The study employed a descriptive survey design with a sampled population of 296 derived through census method from four public universities offering library and information science. The principle instruments used in collecting data for this study were self-designed checklists. With the checklists, 12455 serials citations were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mode, mean and range and data presented in tables, charts and graphs using frequencies and percentile. The study found that the most cited serials types were journals with 76.5% citations followed by conference proceedings/reports with 20% and the least cited being government publication with only .5 citations. This affirms other citation analysis, which found that journals are the most frequently used type. It was further discovered that serials used were either in print or electronic form. The study also revealed that multi authorship is the most frequently cited author pattern in library graduates theses and dissertations, while annual serials citations range from 1034 to 2205. The study indicated that the average age of serials used was 0 - 20. The study recommended among other things that there should be documentation librarian in each university library whose duty should be tracking down research reports, ensuring proper documentations and upward delivery to the university library circulation unit. Our study compares journal citations from dissertations granted at three universities (Penn State, Cornell, and Auburn) using a novel bibliometric approach: text mining. We first tested the validity of text mining as a method for collecting journal title mentions by comparing text mining results with human-tallied results on a set of dissertations. We then text mined a group of dissertations using a preexisting list of journal titles in order to count journal title mentions in combination with the number of dissertations citing each title. The combination of journal title mentions and number of citing dissertations created a ranking for comparison across institutions. Our study presents text mining as a reliable and less time-intensive option for certain types of bibliometric analyses and also shows the utility of a ranked score approach (CD rank) for making cross-institutional citation comparisons. The gender issue is a relatively new topic in migration studies. However, with increasing awareness, it has gained growing popularity among research topics dealing with human mobility. As a research interest, it also naturally stands out in Turkiye, a destination country for large-scale immigration movements. Considering all this, one can see the importance and necessity of examining studies that address gender and migration in tandem. Such an academic endeavor could bring about key results in terms of identifying more and less focused themes by gender and migration studies, thus helping formulate functional recommendations for further research. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the postgraduate dissertations directly focusing on gender in the context of migration in Turkiye. To this end, 57 postgraduate dissertations were examined by the years they were completed, the universities in which they were made, the gender of authors, the methods of the dissertations in general, and the sample or study groups. The findings evaluated were based on the relevant literature. The findings show that there is a growing interest in the migration issue as part of the academic studies in Turkiye. However, the studies in the context of gender and migration are still limited. There is very little research on this subject at the doctoral level. The author writes in support of Dr. Afanasyeva's open letter to Russian Minister of Education O.Y. Vasilieva. He agrees with Dr. Afanasyeva's assessment of the current problems facing the Russian academic community in terms of both the awarding of degrees and the process of publishing peer-reviewed articles. The reduction of publicly funded universities and the commercialization of academia have had a detrimental effect on academic standards. While relaxed academic standards have led to plagiarism and improper accreditation, the over-bureaucratization of the academic process has also led to unnecessary procedures that often stymie scientific research and the publication of legitimate research. In recent years, significant efforts have been made by Turkish researchers to contribute to knowledge production in the field of educational administration to match the scholarly endeavor of their international peers. The main purpose of these scientific studies, including dissertations, is to produce knowledge and offer original alternatives to solving problems through several philosophical approaches. Consistent with this effort, the present study aims to evaluate the dissertations produced in the field of educational administration epistemologically as well as ontologically, in respect of Habermas's knowledge taxonomy. The research was conducted using document and discourse analysis, which are qualitative research methods, and 215 dissertations prepared in 23 different universities accessed from Council of Higher Education Thesis Center database were analyzed. The results show that Eskisehir Osmangazi, Hacettepe and Ankara Universities take the lead in the production of dissertations. It was found the number of males was higher in both researcher and supervisor positions, that mainly quantitative research methods were used, and that empiricalanalytical knowledge was produced. The limitation of historicalhermeneutical/ interpretative and critically oriented knowledge types is another original finding. The dataset included only dissertations and excluded other sources from Turkey. The authors believe that this study will serve as basis for a better understanding of the current features of the field. In addition, this study, which was conducted in a non-Western country, is expected to affect the knowledge production trend in the field of educational administration and support the diversity of knowledge in dissertations, which are detailed studies shedding light on the future. The article presents the results of a bibliometric analysis of dissertations submitted for defense in the Russian specialty 07.00.15—History of International Relations and Foreign Policy in 2000–2019. It is noted that earlier the history of international relations did not become the object of bibliometric research. The main topics of dissertations, scientific institutions, and educational organizations in which dissertations on the history of international relations and foreign policy are carried out and defended are identified; the ratio of the number of dissertations for the Russian degree of candidate and doctor of sciences is presented. This article is a preliminary review of the Annotated Bibliography of Mindanao Studies, which is a four-volume compilation based on a one-year survey by members of the Mindanao Studies Consortium. It focuses on the PhD dissertations produced by Mindanao scholars or scholars of the island and argues that these 'local intelligentsia' play the role of 'discursive mediators' between the local communities and the outside academic, policy and civil society world. Our study explores journal citations from 62 doctoral dissertations in rural sociology from 2004 to 2021 at The Pennsylvania State University. A citation analysis of 7,234 journal citations identified three ranked lists: number of citations (Cit Rank), number of dissertations citing the journal (Diss Rank), and the average combined rank of citation counts and dissertation counts (CD Rank). Our study identifies 31 journal titles based on Cit Rank and Diss Rank 43 unique titles across the three ranking methods. Analysis of variance between (CD Rank and Cit Rank) is 5.51 and (CD Rank and Diss Rank) is 4.77. The average difference in range between Cit Rank and Diss Rank is 9.4. Correlation between (Cit Rank and Diss Rank) using Kendall tau b is.538 and Spearman rho.734. Correlation between (CD Rank and Cit Rank) demonstrates a stronger correlation using Kendall tau b.796 and Spearman rho.934. Correlation between (CD Rank and Diss Rank) demonstrates a stronger correlation using Kendall tau b.757 and Spearman rho.911. In sum, there is a strong correlation between CD Rank and both Cit Rank and Diss Rank. Finally our study assesses our findings organizing them into the following categories: rural studies, sociology, agriculture, development, natural resources and environment, health, demography and geography, general social sciences. The core journal title list that our research has generated will help librarians better develop and manage their collections in support of rural sociology research. The author sought to understand the pattern of use of information resources by the university undergraduates in the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences discipline. This study analyzed 6754 citations from 361 undergraduate dissertations from 2014-2018 submitted to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. According to the findings journals were appeared to be the most preferred source of citation among the Veterinary Medical students. Data sets conformed to the Leimkuhler model derived from Bradford’s law. In the ranked list of core journals in Veterinary science, Journal of dairy science took the first place with 108 citations. Further, results indicated that the students utilized current information mostly for their research. Further observation on authorship patterns of the journal citations indicated that the students of selected veterinary dissertations had mostly cited journal articles which have been authored in collaboration. Recommendations were drawn towards improving the library collection in a user-centric manner and strengthening library instruction. The purpose of this study was to descriptively analyze theses and dissertations written "on learning disabilities. In line with this purpose, keywords such as "specific learning disability", "specific learning disorder", "learning disability", "reading impairment", "reading disability", "dyslexia", "writing impairment", "writing disability", "dysgraphia", "mathematics impairment", "mathematics disability" and "dyscalculia" were used for the review. The search including the studies published in 2020 put forth 31 master's theses and 20 Ph.D. However, due to the official restrictions on the studies, the full texts of one master's thesis and one Ph.D. thesis could not be downloaded. According to the findings, the first master's thesis was published in 1996, whereas the first Ph.D. dissertation was published in 1998. Written by students from different graduate schools and different departments, these theses and dissertations were gathered around four skill areas. According to the number of theses and dissertations, these skills were reading, mathematics, writing, and science, respectively. Although the increase in the number of the studies written on the subject from different disciplines especially in recent years is considered positive, it is noteworthy that there is no content knowledge in the aforementioned studies conducted outside the special education departments taking into consideration the academic language used and how the study problems are addressed. We conducted a qualitative content analysis on counseling dissertations (N = 250) completed between 2017 and 2018. Identified categories included (a) paradigms, philosophies of science, and theories; (b) research methodologies; and (c) trustworthiness. In 2012, in a bid to improve the quantitative methods training of social science students in the UK, the £19.5 million Q-Step project was launched. This investment demonstrated a significant commitment to changing how we train social science students in quantitative research methods in the UK. The project has involved eighteen higher education institutions exploring and trialling potential ways of engaging social science students with quantitative approaches. This paper reflects on the activities of one Q-Step centre based in the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University. As well as describing some of the pedagogic changes that have been implemented, the paper draws on data to begin to evaluate the success of new approaches. Specifically, data showing the proportion of students undertaking a quantitative final-year dissertation project is used to measure the impact of these activities. The data presented in this paper suggest that resistance to learning quantitative research methods and engaging with such techniques has decreased. The data also indicates that students see this learning as beneficial for their own employability. Despite this, closer analysis reveals that several students change their mind about employing quantitative methods in their own research part way through their dissertation journey. We argue that while social science students are comfortable learning about quantitative approaches, they are less confident at applying these techniques. Previous studies have presented a radical change in library and information science research topics in North America. This article investigates library and information science doctoral dissertations in China in terms of their topics and interdisciplinarity in the past 20 years. The results do not find a significant change in library and information science dissertation topics in China but reveal that the increase of library and information science doctoral research in the area of information science is attributed to an increase in admissions to Information Science majors compared to other majors (Library Science and Archive Studies). This study also shows that the academic background of library and information science doctoral advisors does not affect the interdisciplinarity of their students' doctoral dissertations in China. Dissertations can be important sources of information about the future of a research field. These publications capture the ideas, theories, methods, and populations that emerging researchers deem important for study. Dissertation research often exhibits great rigor and innovation. This study of dissertations focuses on one specific field, which has importance in a large variety of academic disciplines: information behavior. An analysis of a sample of information behavior dissertations published in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses between 2009 and 2018 is performed. The top theories, methods, and study populations are identified using data functions to compile the results. While the majority of information behavior research originates in the discipline of library and information science (53%), the field is nonetheless highly interdisciplinary. The theories of Kuhlthau, Dervin, and Wilson are used extensively as frameworks in information behavior dissertations. Students are the most commonly studied population, while interview is the most commonly utilized research method. Information behavior is a diverse research field, stemming from a large number of disciplines and utilizing a broad group of theories, methods, and populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the possibilities of examining undergraduate dissertations as sources. By means of archival research on a collection of Geography undergraduate dissertations at the University of Glasgow, comprising over 2,600 dissertations from 1954 to 2014, this paper argues for the epistemological value of both these "small" knowledge productions and the experiences of becoming a geographer for studying the history of Geography. A sustained study of the collection reveals that the dissertations comprise three kinds of sources: intellectual sources, seeing the dissertations as original pieces of academic research; cultural sources, examining the role of this "rites of passage" in becoming a geographer; and lastly, as social sources, whereby the dissertations illuminate a diverse, personal network within and beyond the university. The vastness of the archival collection of undergraduate Geography dissertations and the opportunities offered for a longitudinal examining of shifts within them over the years, revealing notable overall trends and traditions, ultimately discloses their own importance as exciting and striking original knowledge productions.
