Background: Several studies have revealed the positive healthy impacts of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs). However, most of these studies evaluated the serum BCFAs in humans, or treatment with exogenous BCFAs in animal or in-vitro models and the health impacts of dietary BCFAs have not yet been studied. Due to positive effects of BCFAs in sport, in the current study, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary BCFAs and metabolic and inflammatory parameters among elite and subelite soccer players. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 335 elite and subelite soccer players (196 male), aged between 20 and 45 years old. Soccer players were enrolled from 32 teams under the directive of The Chinese Football Association. Demographic, anthropometric, and dietary assessments were performed and laboratory measurement including serum lipids, glycemic markers, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein was measured. Results: Those with the highest dietary BCFAs consumption had higher appetite (p =.009). Also, high consumption of dietary BCFAs was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure (odds ratio: 0.958; confidence interval: 0.918–0.999; p =.046) and low high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentrations in the third tertile of dietary BCFAs (odds ratio: 0.431; confidence interval: 0.300–0.618; p <.001). No other association between biochemical variables and dietary BCFAs was found. Conclusion: As shown in the current study, higher dietary BCFAs consumption was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure and inflammation. Purpose: To describe serum irisin and fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) concentrations in healthy female adolescents with different training activity patterns and their associations with bone mineral properties and metabolic markers. Methods: A total of 62 adolescent girls aged 14–18 years were recruited: 22 rhythmic gymnasts, 20 swimmers, and 20 untrained controls. Bone mineral characteristics by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, daily energy intake by dietary recall, serum irisin, FGF-21, undercarboxylated osteocalcin, and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen were measured in all girls. Results: Whole body and lumbar spine areal bone mineral density and lumbar spine bone mineral content were higher in the rhythmic gymnasts group compared with swimmers and untrained controls groups (P <.05). Serum irisin, FGF-21, undercarboxylated osteocalcin, and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen levels were not significantly different between the groups. In the rhythmic gymnasts group, serum FGF-21 concentration was positively correlated with lumbar spine areal bone mineral density independently of confounding factors (r =.51; P =.027). Conclusions: Serum irisin and FGF-21 levels were not different between adolescent eumenorrheic girls with different training activity patterns. The premise of research in human physiology is to explore a multifaceted system whilst identifying one or a few outcomes of interest. Therefore, the control of potentially confounding variables requires careful thought regarding the extent of control and complexity of standardisation. One common factor to control prior to testing is diet, as food and fluid provision may deviate from participants' habitual diets, yet a self-report and replication method can be flawed by under-reporting. Researchers may also need to consider standardisation of physical activity, whether it be through familiarisation trials, wash-out periods, or guidance on levels of physical activity to be achieved before trials. In terms of pharmacological agents, the ethical implications of standardisation require researchers to carefully consider how medications, caffeine consumption and oral contraceptive prescriptions may affect the study. For research in females, it should be considered whether standardisation between- or within-participants in regards to menstrual cycle phase is most relevant. The timing of measurements relative to various other daily events is relevant to all physiological research and so it can be important to standardise when measurements are made. This review summarises the areas of standardisation which we hope will be considered useful to anyone involved in human physiology research, including when and how one can apply standardisation to various contexts. Athletes, both amateur and professional, often resort to the consumption of nutritional supplements without professional supervision and without being aware of the risks they may entail. We conducted an exhaustive literature search to determine the most common substances found as contaminants in dietary supplements. For each substance, we analyzed its mechanism of action, clinical indication, health risk, and putative use as doping agent. In addition, we evaluated the current regulation of these supplements. Contamination of nutritional supplements (accidental or intentional), especially with steroids and stimulants, is a hazardous situation. The prolonged consumption of these products without being aware of their composition can cause serious health risks and, in the case of professional athletes, a possible sanction for doping. Objectives: Tooth wear, also referred to as tooth surface loss, occurs due to causes other than caries. This involves the loss of hard tissues, namely enamel, dentin, and/or cementum. Types of tooth wear/tooth surface loss are abrasion, abfraction, attrition, and erosion. These multifactorial conditions can be caused by factors such as lifestyle, diet, or even habits, and may not be symptomatic. The focus of this article is to provide clinicians with detailed examples and explanations of the causes of tooth loss to aid in early diagnosis. Through early identification, the preventive measures outlined can be implemented to avoid excessive tooth wear. The provision of a treatment flowchart and general treatment recommendations aims to help clinicians determine when to restore these lesions and the most appropriate treatment measures for the four types of wear. Method and materials: The PubMed (MEDLINE) search engine was used to gather information on teeth restricted to a 5-year period (26 August 2018 to 25 July 2022). Only English-language studies and reviews with the best balance of sensitivity and specificity were considered. A Boolean search of the PubMed dataset was implemented to combine a range of keywords: ("tooth wear" OR tooth attrition OR tooth erosion OR tooth abrasion OR tooth abfraction). Additional articles were selected through Google Scholar. Results: By this process, many articles and studies were obtained, and the 48 most relevant published studies were chosen and used in the current review. Conclusion: Tooth wear affects an increasing number of individuals and can have detrimental effects physically, mentally, and emotionally. Purpose: To collect and evaluate the available evidence on existing tools used in research and clinical practice to assess and analyse the diet of children and adolescents for its cariogenicity. Materials and Methods: Multiple databases were searched up to October 2022, with no date, publication, or language restrictions, followed by a manual search. Study screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were performed in duplicate. Dietary assessment tools and dental clinical parameters tested were retrieved for qualitative assessment and synthesis. Results: Of the 2896 papers identified, 9 cohort and 23 cross-sectional studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. To assess dietary data, 13 studies used a 24-h recall, 11 used a food diary, and 7 used a food frequency questionnaire. For analysis, five studies reported using the Healthy Eating Index, ten used a score based on consumption of sugars, and the remaining analysed cariogenic diet based on the weight and frequency of sugars consumed, or the daily caloric intake from free sugars. Risk of bias assessment suggested that 65.7% of the studies were of moderate and 31.5% of high quality. Conclusion: Inconsistency exists regarding methods used for the assessment and analysis of dietary cariogenicity. Although every dietary assessment tool has different strengths and limitations, the 24-h recall was the most commonly used method for the assessment of dietary cariogenicity and the most consistent in detecting a positive relationship between sugary diet and carious lesions. Deciding what, where, when and how much to feed a child occupies much of a mother's time, energy, and financial resources. This study aids our understanding of the effects of legislation promoting healthier eating on mothers from low socioeconomic groups and on their families. We interview mothers and nutrition experts in Santiago, Chile – the site of the most recent and comprehensive effort to change a population's food habits via legislation. We introduce the notions of 'desired diets' – ideal diets promoted by health experts and public policy discourses that moralise food consumption and promote consumer responsibilisation for health-related issues; and 'possible diets' – diets that mothers can adapt to and habituate in the household, considering their life realities. We argue that the notions of possible and desired diets often find themselves at odds, leading to mothers facing moral scrutiny, anxiety, and stress, which affects their sense of self, shaping notions of 'good mothering'. What motivates consumers to avoid unhealthy behaviors (e.g. consuming sugar, energy drinks, and fast food)? Traditional interventions and lay intuition suggest that to motivate themselves, consumers can consider the negative long-term health consequences of their decisions. Yet, consumers still struggle to avoid unhealthy behaviors. Seven experiments (N  =   4,021) offer a different approach. We find that considering short-term costs of unhealthy behaviors (e.g. irritability or indigestion after eating sugar) better curbs these behaviors than considering long-term costs or no costs. We theorize that short-term costs are more effective at reducing unhealthy behavior because they are more strongly associated with the act of consumption, both in terms of immediate timing and perceived likelihood of costs occurring. As such, short-term costs are better at undermining the reason for consuming unhealthily: anticipated enjoyment of the consumption experience. We test this process by (a) demonstrating mediation via increased association strength and subsequent decreased anticipated enjoyment, (b) manipulating the association strength between consumption and costs (i.e. same cost realized sooner vs. later), and (c) demonstrating moderation via consumers' goal for eating unhealthily. These results identify a powerful but underutilized self-regulation strategy—emphasizing short-term costs of unhealthy consumption—with implications for consumers and marketers. Food supply chains hold significant embodied carbon emissions that need to be mitigated and neutralized. This study aimed to explore the historical Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions associated with household food consumption at a local scale i.e. across the eight English regions and the four nations that comprise the United Kingdom (UK). UK EatWell guidelines were used to explore the potential change in emissions and food costs in a scenario of transitions to healthier diets across the study areas. These emissions were calculated based on food consumption data before the advent of the Covid-pandemic i.e. between the years 2001 and 2018. Spatial data analysis was used to explore if the study areas had any significant correlations with respect to the emissions during the study period. The results displayed a potential reduction in GHG emissions for all study areas in the explored scenario. Further impacts include a reduction in household food costs across a majority of the areas during the study period. However, a consistent trend of significant correlations among the study areas was absent. This study concludes that local or regional policymaking should take precedence over national regulations to achieve healthier diets that are both carbon-neutral and affordable for the households. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected older adults' social lives, physical activity, and cognitive functions. Additionally, the lockdowns have disrupted regular healthcare for patients with chronic illnesses or needing acute care. Furthermore, the pandemic has negatively affected different psychosocial influences in each country due to the various cultural characteristics, technology, health system, and financial opportunities. This study aimed to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on mood, social participation, and healthcare use in older adults living in Turkey. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (March-December 2021) in three medical centers in Turkey. Patients aged 60 + years without significant cognitive impairment were recruited by mail or at hospital admissions. Information on demographics, pandemic-related distancing measures, healthcare use, lifestyle, symptoms of anxiety, depression, and social participation were assessed. Results: A total of 343 participants were included in the study. Women had a higher rate of hypertension, symptoms of anxiety, depression, and fatigue compared to men (p < 0.05). Since the start of the pandemic, only 22.4% of non-acute healthcare appointments were conducted face-to-face. Time spent with family and friends, hope for the future, and physical activity decreased. At the same time, the experience of loneliness, the number of meals and unhealthy snacks, and the use of digital services increased. Women were also more concerned about getting coronavirus infection, transmitting the virus to others, and being discriminated against because of the infection (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These pandemic days have had a significant psychosocial impact on Turkish older adults, especially women. As a strategy of the health care policy, easy access and follow-up to the health system should be provided, and the necessary support should be procured to minimize the detrimental effects of the pandemic on older people. The article analyzes the organizational and legal prerequisites and the process of reorganization of the administrative and territorial system and the formation of local self-government on the territory of Subcarpathian Rus (Transcarpathia) during the first half of the 20s of the 20th century. It was established that the system of administrative and territorial organization of the region was formed gradually, undergoing minor changes at the initial stage. At this stage, the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in the former Hungarian lands (Piedkarpattia) not only adopted the existing Hungarian administrative system to a certain extent, but also partially adapted it to its needs. It has been analyzed that instead of Czechoslovak committees under Law No. 126/1920, the old Hungarian committee administration, modified by Law No. 210/1920 and Government Decree No. 476/1920, remained in force in Subcarpathian Rus. It was established that after the recognition of the invalidity of the Committee Law No. 126/1920 and the unsuccessful attempt to introduce Government Decree No. 352/1920 in Subcarpathian Rus, the government of the Czech Republic began to be interested in the centralization of power in the region. It is noted that the resolution of the Presidium of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Czechoslovakia No. 22093 dated August 26, 1921 approved a new administrative-territorial system with a division into three counties and 19 districts. The cities of Uzhhorod and Mukachevo were declared settlements with a regulated magistrate. It is proven that the limitation of local self-government was based on government decree No. 171/1923, the principle norm of which was the appointment of new district notaries, who became civil servants supervising self-government. Corresponding conclusions were made regarding the support by the state authorities of the Czechoslovak Republic of the principle of vertical subordination of self-government bodies, especially city ones, which even illusory did not correspond to the principles of the autonomous organization of the region stipulated by the Saint-Germain Peace Treaty [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pre-diabetes, characterized by elevated glycemic indices, poses a high risk of diabetes development, and is increasingly linked to non-specific low back pain. While mechanisms remain incompletely understood, metabolic, inflammatory, and neurological factors are implicated. Dietary interventions, including low-glycemic and anti-inflammatory diets, alongside weight management, may improve outcomes in this population. Objectives: In this non-randomized controlled trial, we aim to evaluate the influence of decreasing HbA1c levels on reducing chronic non-specific low back pain in pre-diabetic, non-obese individuals, as well as emphasizing the importance of such a study in supporting the literature. Methods: A non-randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial was conducted among 82 participants with chronic non-specific low back pain and pre-diabetes at an outpatient clinic in Baghdad from the 30th of January to the 22nd of September. The intervention methods aimed at reducing HbA1c levels to assess the reduction impact on alleviating chronic non-specific low back pain included dietary adjustments, sleep optimization, and correction of vitamins and minerals deficiencies. The follow-up process was conducted individually for each participant, with a monthly assessment over a period of six months. Results: At 12 weeks a significant decrease in chronic non-specific low back pain severity was observed in patients with lower HbA1C levels yielding a P -value of.021. Similarly, at 24 weeks there was a decline in the number of patients who reported chronic non-specific low back pain, and the association to lower HbA1C levels was significant with a p -value of.005. Conclusion: This study suggests the presence of a statistically significant association between reduction of HbA1C levels and ensuing improvement in chronic non-specific low back pain symptoms in non-obese prediabetic patients. Plain language summary: The Effects of HbA1c Reduction on Alleviating Nonspecific Back Pain Pre-diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. People with pre-diabetes are at risk of developing diabetes and other health problems, including low back pain, a type of low back pain without a clear cause. Researchers believe this link might be due to problems with metabolism, inflammation, or nerve function. Changes in diet, especially focusing on lowering blood sugar levels and reducing inflammation, along with managing weight, may help people with pre-diabetes who have low back pain without a clear cause feel better. In this study, 82 people with both pre-diabetes and low back pain without a clear cause that lasted for more than 3 months took part in a clinical trial at a clinic in Baghdad. The trial lasted from January to September and was designed to see if lowering blood sugar (measured by HbA1c levels) would reduce low back pain. The participants received personalized care, which included making changes to their diet, improving their sleep, and correcting any vitamin or mineral deficiencies they had. They were followed closely for six months, with monthly check-ups. The results showed that after 12 weeks, many people who managed to lower their blood sugar levels experienced less severe low back pain. The improvement was even more noticeable after 24 weeks, as fewer people reported ongoing low back pain, and this improvement was strongly linked to lower blood sugar levels. In conclusion, the study found that reducing blood sugar levels in people with pre-diabetes who are not obese can significantly improve symptoms of low back pain. Background: Bisphenol S (BPS) is the main substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known plasticiser and endocrine disruptor. BPS disrupts ovarian function in several species. Moreover, a few studies have reported that the effects of BPS might be modulated by the metabolic status, and none have characterised the granulosa cell (GC) proteome after chronic BPS exposure. Objectives: This study aimed to decipher the mechanisms of action of chronic BPS exposure on the proteome of ewe GCs while considering the interaction between a deliberate contrasted metabolism and reproductive function. Methods: Forty ewes were split into two groups with contrasted diets: restricted (R, n = 20) and well-fed (WF, n = 20). The R and WF ewes were subdivided according to the dose of BPS administered through the diet (0–50 µg/kg/day), forming four groups: R0, R50, WF0 and WF50. After 3-month BPS daily exposure, GCs were recovered during the pre-ovulatory stage and proteins were analysed by nano-liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Results: Chronic exposure to BPS affected the GC proteome differently according to the ewe metabolic status. Fifty-nine out of 958 quantified proteins were differentially abundant between groups and are mainly involved in carbohydrate and lipid pathways. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering of differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) identified four clusters of 34, 6, 5 and 14 proteins according to the BPS exposure and diet interaction. Pairwise comparisons between groups also revealed a strong effect of BPS exposure and diet interaction. Functional analysis of DAPs highlighted that BPS upregulated β-glucuronidase (GUSB; p = 0.002), a protein especially able to deconjugate bisphenol glucuronides (BP-g). Moreover, among unexposed ewes, GUSB was detected only in well-fed ewes. Discussion: Conjugation of glucuronides inhibits the oestrogenic activity of bisphenols. Upregulation of GUSB in ewes dosed with BPS would prolong the oestrogenic effects of BPS by deconjugating BPS-g into free BPS. In addition, literature has reported an up-regulation of GUSB in people suffering from obesity. Therefore, people suffering from obesity could be subjected to prolonged and aggravated exposure to BPS. Background: The number of women entering pregnancy with overweight or obesity is increasing. This can increase the risk for excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) which is associated with health complications for mother and baby. There are limited evidence-based interventions within antenatal care settings to encourage healthy eating and physical activity behaviours and support women with managing GWG. Methods: A previous habit-based intervention 'Ten Top Tips for a Healthy Weight' (10TT) was adapted and made suitable for pregnancy in line with the Medical Research Council's (MRC) complex intervention development guidelines. It involved three key activities: (1) identifying the evidence base; (2) identifying appropriate theory; and, (3) modelling processes. A core element was integrating lived experience via personal and public involvement (PPI). Results: The original 10TTs were adapted with PPI in line with current advice on nutrition and physical activity in pregnancy. New intervention materials were devised, including a leaflet and a logbook and app for self-monitoring to be delivered alongside a brief 1:1 conversation. Behaviour change techniques (BCTs) included in the new materials were coded using a number of behavioural taxonomies. An E-learning resource was created to help standardise the approach to delivery of the intervention and avoid stigmatising conversations. Conclusion: Following MRC guidance for the development of complex interventions alongside significant PPI allowed for the adaption of 10TT habit-based weight management intervention into the 'Healthy Habits in Pregnancy and Beyond' (HHIPBe) intervention. The feasibility and acceptability of implementing this intervention in the antenatal setting will be explored in a feasibility randomised controlled trial. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age, can be significantly impacted by diet. This study explores the relationship between a diet rich in phytochemicals, measured by the Dietary Phytochemical Index (DPI), and PCOS, along with associated health markers. Methods: A case–control study design was implemented with 480 individuals diagnosed with PCOS based on the Rotterdam criteria, paired with 480 controls matched in terms of age and BMI. The evaluation encompassed dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, and hormonal/metabolic markers. Additionally, the DPI score was determined based on the consumption of phytochemical-rich foods. The study also examined PCOS-related complications like acne and irregular menstrual cycles, as well as mental health using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) scores. Results: Women with PCOS had significantly lower DPI scores (32.42 vs 43.87, p < 0.001) compared to the control group, indicating a less phytochemical-rich diet. The DPI scores coincided with higher levels of hormones typically associated with PCOS, including Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S), and testosterone. Additionally, these scores were associated with markers of metabolic dysfunction such as C-reactive Protein (CRP), Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), while positively correlating with Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) (all p < 0.050).). Higher DPI scores were associated with a significantly reduced risk of PCOS (OR: 0.13, 95% CI: 0.08, 0.23, P for trend: 0.001) and its complications, including acne and irregular menstrual cycles. Interestingly, a positive association emerged, suggesting better mental health (lower BDI-II scores) with higher DPI scores. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study indicates that lower DPI scores are associated with a higher incidence and severity of PCOS, suggesting that a phytochemical-rich diet could potentially benefit the management of PCOS by enhancing hormonal profiles, metabolic health, and mental well-being in women. Objective: Unusual clinical course Background: Obesity-hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), also known as Pickwickian syndrome, is a respiratory consequence of morbid obesity, usually treated with non-invasive positive airway pressure (PAP) therapies and weight loss. This study reports a 53-year-old woman with a body mass index of 49 kg/m2 who experienced acute hypercapnic respiratory failure due to OHS. Her treatment involved mechanical ventilation, home oxygen therapy, and long-term weight loss of >30 kg. Case Report: A 53-year-old woman (109 kg) presented with acute hypercapnic respiratory failure due to OHS, which improved with mechanical ventilation and diuretics. After discharge from the hospital, she was treated with nocturnal non-invasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV) and home oxygen therapy. Over a 5-year period, following loss of >30 kg, she was re-evaluated for the discontinuation of NPPV and oxygen therapy. She was evaluated with various NPPV settings and oxygen doses, monitored by transcutaneous pressure of carbon dioxide (PtcCO2). On NPPV, PtcCO2 levels ±55 mmHg were maintained within 10 min, indicating that the durations of PtcCO2 ³50 mmHg were too prolonged for her to be switched to continuous PAP therapy. Nonetheless, oxygen therapy was discontinued because the duration of peripheral blood oxygen saturation <90% was brief. Conclusions: For patients with OHS treated with NPPV and oxygen therapy, weight loss alone may not improve hypoventilation and wean the patient from NPPV. Besides obesity, various factors influence respiratory compromise in OHS; hence, a comprehensive assessment of hypoventilation, including PtcCO2 monitoring, is essential to determine whether NPPV withdrawal is possible after body weight loss. Background: Economic growth in Rwanda is associated with significant changes in food systems, access to health and other services, lifestyle, and nutritional transitions. Nevertheless, our knowledge of dietary patterns in Rwanda remains limited. The present study aimed to identify the dietary habits of young adult population in Rwanda and to assess associated factors. Methods: A developed and validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire covering a one-year period was used to collect data on food intake of 1,218 participants (18–35 years old) from end of January to April 2023 in a cross-sectional study. Dietary habits were assessed using two indicators: the Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) and dietary patterns. The latest was developed using exploratory factor analysis. Results: Rwandan adults had a mean GDQS of 24.1; 64.4% had high GDQS, especially urban, and educated respondents. The Southern province led at 77.4%. Three dietary patterns were identified: "Modern" (high in processed foods and drinks), "Traditional" (rich in cereals, roots, and plant-based proteins), and "low variety" (low in diverse foods but high in sugar and salt). Dietary patterns significantly varied by residency, province, sex, age, social category, asset, and education level. Conclusion: This study identified distinct dietary patterns among adult population of Rwanda, suggesting a nutritional transition associated with urbanization. Aims: To investigate (1) the association between maternal dietary choices during the first and second trimesters and the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), (2) the association between a GDM diagnosis and dietary choices during pregnancy, and (3) the differences in pregnancy outcomes between individuals with and without GDM. Methods: A prospective cohort study. Pregnant individuals with singleton pregnancy aged 19 ∼ 44 years, without severe pregnancy complications were enrolled in the study. Dietary data were collected at three time points during routine antenatal appointments: 8 ∼ 12 weeks gestation(n = 993), 20 ∼ 24 weeks gestation(n = 732), and 32 ∼ 36 weeks gestation(n = 536). GDM diagnosis and pregnancy outcomes were collected during follow-up from the electronic medical record (EMR). Results: A total of 93 participants (12.9%) were diagnosed with GDM. Livestock and poultry meat intake during the second trimester were associated with an increased risk of developing GDM (aOR 1.371, 95%CI 1.070–1.756, P = 0.013), and a GDM diagnosis may lead to decreased intake of cereals and its products (P = 0.001), potatoes and its products (P < 0.001), and fruit (P = 0.002) and increased intake of fish, shrimp and shellfish (P = 0.001), eggs (P = 0.015), and milk and milk products (P = 0.011) in the third trimester. Individuals with GDM related to lower risk of excessive gestational weight gain (aOR 0.384, 95%CI 0.188–0.646, P = 0.001) but may increase the risk of fetal macrosomia (aOR 3.873, 95%CI 1.364–10.996, P = 0.011). Conclusions: Understanding maternal dietary choices around GDM diagnosis is crucial for accurate nutritional assessment and effective education programs. While our findings suggest dietary changes may occur post-diagnosis, further research is needed to confirm these patterns and the potential benefits of early dietary counseling for individuals with GDM. Biliary tract cancer (BTC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy with increasing incidence. Most BTC cases are diagnosed with metastatic disease which carries a 5‐year survival rate of <5%. Physical activity, diet, and obesity might be associated with BTC risk, but studies have been limited particularly in African descendants. We addressed this knowledge gap by evaluating associations of BTC risk with obesity, physical activity, and dietary intakes in 723,326 adult participants in four cohort studies conducted in China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in each cohort; results were combined using meta‐analysis. All cohorts had ≥11 median follow‐up years with 839 incident BTC cases combined. BTC risk was positively associated with body mass index (BMI) and waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR) whereas physical activity, fruit intake, and fish intake were inversely associated. HR and (95% CI) comparing BMI >35.0 to 18.5–24.9: 1.71 (1.26, 2.31), p‐trend <.0001; comparing BMI‐adjusted WHR top to bottom quartile: 1.20 (0.94, 1.53), p‐trend =.05; comparing ≥15–0 metabolic equivalent task‐hours/week 0.76 (0.61, 0.94), p‐trend =.009; comparing highest to lowest intake tertile for fruit and fish 0.79 (0.66, 0.95), p‐trend =.01; 0.82 (0.68, 0.98), p‐trend =.04, respectively. Associations were, in general, similar across ancestry groups. Our study provides strong evidence for important roles of obesity, diet, and physical activity in BTC etiology and stresses the need for lifestyle modification to combat the rising incidence of this fatal malignancy. Gut microbiota is considered a key player modulating the response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in cancer. The effects of dietary pattern on this interaction is not well-studied. A prospective multicenter cohort of 95 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing ICI therapy were enrolled. Stool shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed. Three-day dietary patterns before ICI were assessed. Patients were categorized as hyperprogressive disease (HPD) if they exhibited a time to treatment failure of less than 2 months. All others were categorized as non-hyperprogressive disease (non-HPD). The correlation between dietary patterns, gut microbiome, and response to ICI therapy was analyzed. In the multivariate analysis, a high abundance of Firmicutes unclassified and the Ruminococcaceae family correlated with a significantly diminished progression-free survival (PFS) with an HR of 2.40 [P = 0.006] and 4.30 [P = 0.005], respectively. More specifically, within the subset of NSCLC patients treated solely with ICI therapy, a high abundance of Intestinimonas and the Enterobacteriaceae family were associated with substantially reduced PFS with an HR of 2.61 [P = 0.02] and HR 3.34 [P = 0.005], respectively. In our comprehensive dietary pattern analysis, the HPD group showed increased consumption of cholesterol, sodium, and fats beyond recommended levels compared to the non-HPD group. This group also displayed a tendency towards higher food pattern scores characterized by a high intake of fat and dairy products. Our study revealed a distinct association between the gut microbiome composition and treatment outcomes. The overall composition of diet might be related to ICI therapeutic outcomes. Adequate nutrition in a hospital setting is essential for achieving optimal health outcomes in oncology patients. This study specifically investigated the interrelationships between nutritional status, daily habits, and hospital length of stay (LOS) in ovarian cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. A prospective longitudinal study was conducted from August 2019 to January 2022 in a tertiary hospital. Throughout the study, nutritional status, biochemical indicators, diet, and physical activity were meticulously recorded at different stages of chemotherapy: before chemotherapy (T0), the first course (T1), third course (T2), and fifth course (T3). To determine the factors influencing LOS, a generalized estimation equation (GEE) was employed. A total of 460 patients completed the follow-up period. The findings revealed a decline in nutritional risk among patients by 9.90% at T1, 17.62% at T2 and 18.26% at T3 (χ2 = 79.220, P < 0.001). The proportion of people receiving enteral nutrition showed an upward trend (χ2 = 15.202, P < 0.001). Notably, the proportion of patients adhering to a healthier diet increased by 40.44% by the study's conclusion, while the number of patients abstaining from physical activity or engaging in solely low-intensity activities decreased by 21.08%. Moreover, as the chemotherapy cycle progressed, daily activity steps exhibited an upward trajectory (F = 5.986, P < 0.001), while the LOS experienced a significant reduction (F = 21.298, P < 0.001). This study identified hypoproteinemia (protein level < 34 g/L), a high nutritional risk (NRS 2002 score ≥ 3), a short duration of sleep (≤ 7 h/day), and a lower daily activity level as risk factors for LOS. Receiving enteral nutrition support is a protective factor for LOS. Significant improvements in nutritional status, diet, and physical activity have been observed among ovarian cancer patients during their chemotherapy cycles. The animal gut microbiome acts as a crucial link between the host and its environment, playing a vital role in digestion, metabolism, physiology, and fitness. Using 16S rRNA metabarcoding, we investigated the effect of altitude on the microbiome composition of Anatolian Blind Mole Rats (Nannospalax xanthodon) across six locations and three altitudinal groups. We also factored in the host diet, as well as host microsatellite genotypes and thyroid hormone levels. The altitude had a major effect on microbiome composition, with notable differences in the relative abundance of several bacterial taxa across elevations. Contrary to prior research, we found no significant difference in strictly anaerobic bacteria abundance among altitudinal groups, though facultatively anaerobic bacteria were more prevalent at higher altitudes. Microbiome alpha diversity peaked at mid-altitude, comprising elements from both low and high elevations. The beta diversity showed significant association with the altitude. Altitude had a significant effect on the diet composition but not on its alpha diversity. No distinct altitude-related genetic structure was evident among the host populations, and no correlation was revealed between the host genetic relatedness and microbiome composition nor between the host microbiome and the diet. Free thyroxine (FT4) levels increased almost linearly with the altitude but none of the bacterial ASVs were found to be specifically associated with hormone levels. Total thyroxine (TT4) levels correlated positively with microbiome diversity. Although we detected correlation between certain components of the thyroid hormone levels and the microbiome beta diversity, the pattern of their relationship remains inconclusive. Background: Studies on the in-depth documentation of wild greens use in the Mediterranean Diet (MD) are vital to understanding patterns of cross-geographical change in wild food ingredients in the Mediterranean context, their appreciated taste, and possible evolution. Our present study aims to document the leafy, wild-sourced plant portion of the MD in the unique and isolated matrifocal community of Olympos, North Karpathos Isle, Greece. Methods: An ethnobotanical field study focussing on traditionally wild-sourced edible greens (chórta) was conducted during the spring of 2023 via 42 semi-structured interviews with local people. Results: Our study documented 69 wild green taxa, along with their culinary uses and linguistic labels. Half of the gathered wild greens have a bitter taste (i.e. members of Asteraceae and Brassicaceae), while 70% of the top-quoted greens are bitter. These greens were mostly consumed cooked. Nearly half of the quoted taxa had been previously recorded as used in the food system of central Crete. In contrast, one-fourth of the folk phytonyms recorded in Olympos do not match the ones found in Crete and the rest of Greece, which may be linked to the Doric culture that the community remained attached to because of its isolation. However, the plant-human interaction kernel is similar to that of surrounding areas. Moreover, the community of Olympos seems to rely less on aromatic wild greens (compared with Crete). Conclusion: Cross-cultural foraging comparison is crucial for better understanding the circulation, exchange, and evolution of local plant knowledge under the MD umbrella. Our study assesses, in particular, how noteworthy phytolinguistic differences indicating different ancient trajectories of cultural encounters/exchanges may not necessarily be reflected in differences in terms of plant reports. As often postulated in linguistic ethnobiology, ancient linguistic labels sometimes remain as "empty shells". Given the fragile environment and the increasing over-tourism during the summer months the study site is experiencing, the presented data could contribute to a more substantial shift towards sustainable eco-tourism initiatives involving the foraging and cooking of wild greens. The sustainable dietary transitions must account for the varied culinary traditions and regional food cultures to ensure a balanced and culturally sensitive approach. This study aims to explore the impact of regional preferences on culinary culture and examine ways to achieve environmentally friendly dietary transitions in China by considering the differences in the environmental burdens of various cuisines. We investigate the eight Chinese culinary traditions and depict their respective popularity in China at the city level via POI characterization based on ArcGIS. Water, carbon, and ecological footprints are selected to investigate the environmental performance of each type of cuisine. Results show that the eight cuisines vary significantly in spreads of influence and environmental performances. Chuan cuisine is the most widely disseminated cuisine with a relatively low environmental burden. The remaining seven cuisines have limited spreads of influence and are mainly distributed in small cultural regions and the surrounding areas. Hui Cuisine, Zhe Cuisine, and Min Cuisine have the worst environmental performances. This study reveals the significant impact of regional cuisines on the environmental footprint of diets and highlights the necessity of considering this impact when promoting dietary transition, especially in culturally diverse countries. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent disorder of gut‐brain interaction without a reliable cure. Evidence suggests that an alteration of the gut microbiome may contribute to IBS pathogenesis, motivating the development of microbiome‐targeted therapies to alleviate IBS symptoms. However, IBS‐specific microbiome signatures are variable across cohorts. A total of 9204 datasets were meta‐analyzed, derived from fourteen IBS microbiome discovery cohorts, three validation cohorts for diet‐microbiome interactions, and five rifaximin therapy cohorts. The consistent bacterial species and functional signatures associated with IBS were identified. Network analysis revealed two distinct IBS‐enriched microbiota clusters; obligate anaerobes that are found commonly in the gut, and facultative anaerobes typically present in the mouth, implying a possible association between oral bacterial translocation to gut and IBS pathogenesis. By analyzing diet‐microbiome interactions, microbiota‐targeted diets that can potentially modulate the altered gut microbiota of IBS subjects toward a healthy status were identified. Furthermore, rifaximin treatment of IBS subjects was linked with a reduction in the abundance of facultatively anaerobic pathobionts. Gut microbiome signatures were identified across IBS cohorts that may inform the development of therapies for microbiome modulation in IBS. Objectives: Poor Food security (FS) is associated with risk of diet-related diseases and rising healthcare costs. Produce Prescription Interventions (PRx) are emerging clinical tools to improve FS and diet quality, but their impact in families with children is not well established. This study evaluates the impact of a pediatric PRx on FS and nutrition-related behaviors. Methods: Adult caregivers of children (0-18) were enrolled within a 6-month produce delivery and nutrition education intervention. A validated food security survey was administered pre/post intervention to determine FS scores and "Food Secure" status. Statistical analyses tested pre-post differences in FS scores and proportion of scores within the "Food Secure" range. Semi-structured interviews were performed post-intervention to explore families' experiences with low FS and healthy behaviors and were thematically analyzed. Results: Between October 2021 and December 2022, 82 families were enrolled, 65 completed FS survey at baseline and 54 completed it at post-intervention. FS scores improved post-intervention (P <.05) and a greater proportion of household- and child-level scores fell within the "Food Secure" range post-intervention (P <.05). Twenty-eight interviews were analyzed. Three salient themes were identified: (1) value of healthcare-based screening and intervention, (2) food and education motivate behavior change, and (3) perceptions of post-intervention lifestyle sustainability. Conclusions: Participation in the PRx was associated with improvements in FS and nutrition-related attitudes and behaviors. PRx can be implemented by health systems to improve FS and health behaviors associated with risk for diet-related diseases. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects 30 million Americans. Previous epidemiologic work has shown that diet can impact pulmonary function in those with and without COPD. Diet is also a major driver of gut microbiome composition and function. Importantly, the gut microbiome has also been associated with lung health (i.e., the gut-lung axis) in both preclinical and clinical studies. Despite this growing body of evidence, many questions remain regarding the gut-lung axis. Specifically, how the microbiome impacts the relationship between diet factors and spirometry or stage of disease in people with COPD is little understood. We hypothesize that there are taxonomic differences in the gut microbiome among the different stages of COPD and that diet microbiome interactions influence pulmonary function. This study aimed to identify how the GI microbiota correlated with the severity of respiratory disease in COPD patients and how the microbiome may mediate the relationship between diet, including fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, and lung function outcomes. Background: Gut microbes are important to the health and fitness of many animals. Many factors have been shown to affect gut microbial communities including diet, lifestyle, and age. Most animals have very complex physiologies, lifestyles, and microbiomes, making it virtually impossible to disentangle what factors have the largest impact on microbiota composition. Honeybees are an excellent model to study host-microbe interactions due to their relatively simple gut microbiota, experimental tractability, and eusociality. Worker honey bees have distinct gut microbiota from their queen mothers despite being close genetic relatives and living in the same environment. Queens and workers differ in numerous ways including development, physiology, pheromone production, diet, and behavior. In the prolonged absence of a queen or Queen Mandibular Pheromones (QMP), some but not all workers will develop ovaries and become "queen-like". Using this inducible developmental change, we aimed to determine if diet and/or reproductive development impacts the gut microbiota of honey bee workers. Results: Microbiota-depleted newly emerged workers were inoculated with a mixture of queen and worker gut homogenates and reared under four conditions varying in diet and pheromone exposure. Three weeks post-emergence, workers were evaluated for ovary development and their gut microbiota communities were characterized. The proportion of workers with developed ovaries was increased in the absence of QMP but also when fed a queen diet (royal jelly). Overall, we found that diet, rather than reproductive development or pheromone exposure, led to more "queen-like" microbiota in workers. However, we revealed that diet alone cannot explain the microbiota composition of workers. Conclusion: The hypothesis that reproductive development explains microbiota differences between queens and workers was rejected. We found evidence that diet is one of the main drivers of differences between the gut microbial community compositions of queens and workers but cannot fully explain the distinct microbiota of queens. Thus, we predict that behavioral and other physiological differences dictate microbiota composition in workers and queens. Our findings not only contribute to our understanding of the factors affecting the honey bee microbiota, which is important for bee health, but also illustrate the versatility and benefits of utilizing honeybees as a model system to study host-microbe interactions. Background and aim: The burden of orofacial clefts (OFCs) has declined globally except in sub-Saharan Africa, with a great disease burden in North Africa. Children with OFCs have a high risk of malnutrition, and African countries have some of the highest malnutrition rates. This scoping review assessed the status of research on OFCs and nutrition and feeding among children living in African countries. Methods: We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for conducting scoping reviews. We searched eleven databases for articles on malnutrition and feeding among children with OFCs living in African countries. No restriction was done by type of study or publication date. Books, book chapters, and reviews were excluded. Only publications in English language were included. We extracted information about the publication year, study design, setting, location, participants' age, data collection methods, international collaboration, and funding. We classified articles into studies assessing (1) the impact of nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy on OFCs, (2) the impact of OFCs on malnutrition, (3) feeding problems in children with OFCs, and (4) the impact of nutritional status on OFCs repair outcomes. We calculated frequencies and used bar charts and a map. Results: Out of 208 search results, 36 were duplicates, and 25 eventually fit the inclusion criteria, with 52% retrieved from Google Scholar. About 80% of the studies were from four countries: Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Uganda; 72% were hospital-based and 52% were cross-sectional. The most frequent data collection method was clinical examination and questionnaires. Most studies focused on feeding problems in children with OFCs (44%) and the impact of OFCs on malnutrition (32%). International collaboration was observed in six studies, with one study showing South-South collaboration. Only two studies were funded. Conclusions: There is a predominance of under-funded descriptive research not indexed by international databases. Minimal research has been directed to population-level OFC preventive programs in primary healthcare settings and assessing interventions supporting children with OFCs. A research agenda is needed to prioritize research needs and secure funds to support South-South collaboration to address the nutrition and feeding-related problems associated with OFCs. Early juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) rely on gelatinous zooplankton, whereas individuals larger than 40 cm curved carapace length are adapted to crush hard-shelled invertebrates. Nevertheless, fish were reported to be the staple food of loggerhead turtles in the western Mediterranean 30 years ago. Here, the temporal consistency of such a fish-based diet of loggerhead turtles is assessed through gut content analysis and stable isotope analysis of samples from the Mediterranean coast of Spain spanning three decades. The gut contents of 134 juvenile loggerhead turtles (curved carapace length range: 27–71 cm) from three different periods (1991, 1999–2008 and 2010–2017) were analyzed, as well as a subsample of the same turtles (n = 10 in each period) for both bulk and compound-specific stable isotope ratios (CSIA-AA). Gut content analysis revealed a decline in the frequency of occurrence and numerical abundance of fish and an increasing contribution of gastropods and bivalves throughout time, although pelagic tunicates were always the most frequently observed prey. The δ15Nbulk of turtle bone also dropped throughout the study period, but the values of the stable isotope ratio of N in phenylalanine (δ15NPhe) indicated that 52.5% of that variability was due to a baseline shift over time. Accordingly, the trophic position estimated from CSIA-AA did not follow the decreasing pattern of δ15Nbulk, but fluctuated throughout time. The overall evidence indicates that fish consumption by loggerhead turtles in the study region declined through time, but the trophic position of loggerhead turtles did not change simultaneously. This is probably because low trophic prey such pelagic tunicates and filter-feeding bivalves and suspension-feeding gastropods were the bulk of the diet during the whole study period and fish played a minor role, even when their frequency of occurrence peaked. Past levels of high fish consumption might be due to high levels of fishery discards, currently declining because of the recent reduction of the fishing fleet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blood parameters are useful to assess the physiological status of wild bird populations. These parameters can be influenced by environmental changes such as changes in the quality and availability of food resources. In this work, concentrations of biochemical (glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, total proteins) and hematological (leukocyte profile, the heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, hematocrit) parameters, which are indicators of physiological and nutritional status, were determined for Antarctic Shag (Leucocarbo bransfieldensis) at two breeding sites that differ in their history of commercial fish exploitation: Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands (62°18'S, 59°12'W) (HP), an area affected by commercial fish fishing, and at the Danco Coast (64°42′S, 62°0′W) (DC), western Antarctic Peninsula during the breeding season. The data showed significant differences between localities for most blood and biochemical parameters. H/L proportion, hematocrit, and monocytes were significantly higher at the historically impacted site, as well as glucose and total proteins. These results suggest that shags from both areas are in different physical conditions during reproduction, with breeding shags from HP experiencing higher levels of physiological stress and poorer health compared to those in the DC, probably related in part to local factors such as climate and, most importantly, food availability. At a length of 27 mm and greater, each subsequent varices of Pteropurpura macroptera (Deshayes, 1838) represents one year of growth. Among snails still growing, a single varix is added most frequently during August or September. Reproduction occurs from April to early July. The growth rate in situ and in culture were similar. Despite well-documented health and environmental benefits of consuming minimally processed plant-based foods, research on how to educate and promote a plant-based diet (PBD) for diverse community college students is lacking. Understanding awareness and perception of a PBD is important prior to the creation of dietary interventions. A survey including a food frequency questionnaire and novel scales to gauge awareness and perception of PBDs was developed and implemented. Results demonstrated students were generally aware of PBD and its key components, recognized associated health benefits, had a positive perception of a PBD, yet few were actively adherent and demonstrated confusion with PBD terms. Food insecurity is a major social determinant of health (SDH). However, further research is needed on the associations between SDH and diet among individuals living in urban food deserts. We designed a pilot study to examine the associations between diet and seven measures of SDH. Forty-five participants were enrolled in the study and were scheduled for an in-person or telephone interview. Food insecurity was significantly associated with greater intakes of fast food and refined grains. Employment was significantly associated with higher intake of alcohol. Aims: To describe an Aboriginal cultural immersion delivered to dietetics students at a large university in Australia and assess its effectiveness as a method to teach Aboriginal history, culture, diet, and health in dietetics. Methods: Taking a strength‐based approach, Aboriginal processes of learning were privileged, with the cultural immersion being co‐designed with immersion educators, a First Nations researcher, and dietetics academic. The cultural immersion consisted of an opening ceremony and four stations of yarning, weaving, bush tucker, and artefacts/medicines. A mixed‐methods approach was used, with triangulation of data from pre‐ and postsurveys, station mapping, and focus group interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data were simultaneously analysed from participating first‐year Master of Nutrition and Dietetics students and then drawn together for an integrated understanding of the impact of the cultural immersion on student learnings. Results: Fifty‐three students completed pre‐ and postsurveys and 36 participated in focus groups. Through sharing lived experiences, learning through culture, and keeping sessions practical and Aboriginal leadership, each cultural immersion station utilised Aboriginal processes of learning that meaningfully engaged students with Aboriginal education content, appreciate holistic health and increased their general knowledge on Aboriginal history, culture, diet, and health (all p < 0.001). Conclusion: Cultural immersion is one teaching method to enhance student knowledges and can be a part of a programmatic and integrated approach that embeds Aboriginal content throughout the whole curriculum. Background: Increased serum concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers in patients indicate a strong association between COVID-19 and inflammation. However, the association between diet-related inflammation and COVID-19 has been less investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the inflammatory scores of the diet are associated with the severity of COVID-19 disease and the probability of hospitalization of patients. Methods: The authors conducted a cross-sectional study involving 141 patients with COVID-19. The empirical dietary inflammatory pattern (EDIP) and dietary inflammation scores (DIS) were calculated based on a 147-item semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The association between serum levels of inflammatory biomarkers and diet-related inflammation was also investigated. Results: 74 inpatients and 87 outpatients participated in this study. Higher DIS scores were significantly associated with an increased risk of COVID-related hospitalization (Tertile3 vs. tertile1: OR = 3·62; 95 % CI 1·43 to 9·14, P=0·008 after fully adjustment). This association with EDIP was also observed, but it was not significant. Conclusion: The data from this provide evidence that a pro-inflammatory diet was associated with higher risk of hospitalization due to high severity of COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the greatest challenges for researchers today is understanding climate-change impacts on fish populations, particularly in vulnerable and understudied ecosystems such as the Canadian Arctic. Among other impacts, northern fishes will undergo thermal stress as atmospheric and sea surface temperatures are projected to rise globally. Models that consider how both environmental factors such as temperature and potential species interactions will impact population extirpation and species' range contraction can help project the future distribution of a species in the face of a warming climate. Here, we investigate the climate-change impacts of rising temperatures and the potential northward distributional shift of brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) on Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), Canada's northernmost freshwater fish species. Specifically, we used a logistic regression model to establish baseline relationships between the current distribution of Arctic charr and the variables, degree-days (a key climate variable), geographical location, and brook charr occurrence. We developed the model applying the expected changes in degree-days to 2050 (25–50% increase from the average of 1976–2005) and 2080 (50–100% increase) while incorporating the historical distribution of Arctic charr to estimate the change in Arctic charr distribution over that time. We found that growing degree-days, longitude, latitude, and brook charr occurrences correctly classified 93% of Arctic charr historical occurrences in Canada. We estimate that in a high-carbon scenario, where degree-days are expected to increase by 50 to 100%, Arctic charr range is projected to decrease by 18% in Canada by 2051–2080 and decrease even further by 3% with the presence of brook charr. The Canadian high Arctic may provide refuge for Arctic charr, likely maintaining temperatures optimal for species persistence. Regardless, management that considers the climate stresses on Arctic charr populations will be important to preserve this highly valued resource that is pivotal for food security and traditional ways of life for northerners. White-spotted charr (Salvelinus leucomaenis subspp.) and masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou subspp.) are common stream salmonids in the Japanese Archipelago. In Shikoku Island, although white-spotted charr is not originally distributed, its introduced populations have been established in several streams and caused population decline of red-spotted masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae) in some streams. In this study, we examined effects of non-native white-spotted charr on prey use by native red-spotted masu salmon and described food resource partitioning between the two species at the population and individual levels using their allopatric and sympatric streams. Comparisons of the diet between allopatric (without charr) and sympatric red-spotted masu salmon (with charr) indicated no significant difference at both population and individual levels, suggesting that white-spotted charr had no effect on prey use by red-spotted masu salmon. Comparisons of the diet between red-spotted masu salmon and white-spotted charr in the sympatric stream indicated significant differences at both population and individual levels. The population level analyses showed a clear pattern of partitioning that the diets of red-spotted masu salmon and white-spotted charr were dominated by terrestrial and aquatic prey, respectively. Furthermore, individual-level analyses showed that among-individual variation in prey use was larger in white-spotted charr than in red-spotted masu salmon. The high individual variation in prey use by white-spotted charr may facilitate the coexistence of the two species at the local habitat scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dietary change can be a strong evolutionary force and lead to rapid adaptation in organisms. High-fat and high-sugar diets can challenge key metabolic pathways, negatively affecting other life history traits and inducing pathologies such as obesity and diabetes. In this study, we use experimental evolution to investigate the plastic and evolutionary responses to nutritionally unbalanced diets. We reared replicated lines of larvae of the housefly Musca domestica on a fat-enriched (FAT), a sugar-enriched (SUG), and a control (CTRL) diet for thirteen generations. We measured development time in each generation and larval growth and fat accumulation in generations 1, 7, and 13. Subsequently, all lines were reared for one generation on the control diet to detect any plastic and evolutionary changes. In the first generation, time to pupation decreased on a fat-rich diet and increased on a sugar-rich diet. The fat-rich diet increased fat accumulation and, to a lesser extent, the dry weight of the larvae. Multigenerational exposure to unbalanced diets caused compensatory changes in development time, dry weight, and absolute and relative fat content, although pattern and timing depended on diet and trait. When put back on a control diet, many of the changes induced by the unbalanced diets disappeared, indicating that the diet has large plastic effects. Nevertheless, fat-evolved lines still grew significantly larger than the sugar-evolved lines, and sugar-evolved lines had consistently lower fat content. This can be an effect of parental diet or an evolutionary change in nutrient metabolism as a consequence of multigenerational exposure to unbalanced diets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between religion and health tends to be framed positively. Religion has been found to act as a coping mechanism and source of support in times of ill health. In this paper, we focus on the disruptive effect of chronic illness on religious practice and cultural engagement. Drawing on interviews with ethnic minority adults with end‐stage kidney disease, who also identify as religious, we introduce the concept 'cultural disruption'. While religious practice and belief was found to provide strength and comfort we also found that chronic illness had a disruptive impact on religious and cultural practice that participants attempted to manage. To highlight the potential disruptive effect of chronic illness on religious faith and cultural engagement we identify three elements of cultural disruption—disruption to religious practice, disruption to sense of self and identity and disruption to wellbeing. We conclude by suggesting that understanding and accounting for the potential of cultural disruption when diagnosing, treating and supporting people with chronic illness offers an alternative entry point to the life‐worlds of patients who identify as religious and the things that are important to them. Background/Objectives: This study evaluated the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (C-PAP) therapy combined with a rigorous diet regimen on obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Methods: Sixty obese patients (BMI ≥ 30) diagnosed with severe OSAS were recruited in order to establish the evaluation of CPAP therapy with different extents of adherence to a rigorous diet regimen. After one year, significant improvements were observed. Results: BMI reduced by 12.32%, apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) by 22.04%, oxygen desaturation index (ODI) by 15.87%, total sleep time with oxygen saturation below 90% (TST90%) by 25.2%, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) scores by 21.74%. Patients were, then, divided into three groups, based on adherence to the restricted diet, as well as to the correct use of the nocturnal C-PAP, showing different reductions in BMI, AHI, ODI, TST90%, and ESS, according to their adherence, based on the sum of % reduction in BMI + AHI into three groups. Conclusions: These findings underscore the effectiveness of combining C-PAP therapy with a strict diet in improving OSAS symptoms and overall health in obese patients. Future studies with larger cohorts and longer follow-up periods are needed to confirm these results and explore the long-term benefits of this integrated approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Despite global efforts to promote universal salt iodization, iodine deficiency remains a public health issue in developing countries. Objectives: This study assessed the proportion and sociodemographic characteristics of households consuming adequately iodized salt in 49 low- and middle-income countries. Methods: Data from DHS surveys of 49 low- and middle-income countries (2005–2021) were used to analyze household iodized salt prevalence. R version 4.0 was employed for statistical analyses. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted to estimate overall and regional prevalence. Results: We found that 83.4% of households consume adequately iodized salt, although with high heterogeneity (I2 = 100.0%). The East Asia and Pacific and the Europe and Central Asia regions showed high consumption rates of 87.6% and 87.7%, respectively, while Latin America and the Caribbean presented a significantly lower proportion of 30.8%. Conclusions: The study highlights the need for enhanced public health strategies to increase iodized salt consumption, especially in low-income and rural households. Addressing disparities in access, education, and affordability is crucial for improving iodine intake and preventing deficiency disorders, particularly among vulnerable populations like children and pregnant women. Background: This study's purpose was to evaluate the relationship between dance training volume, body composition, and habitual diet in female collegiate dancers. Methods: Thirty-three female collegiate dancers from three dance programs (20.4 ± 1.05 yrs.; 165.4 ± 11.3 cm, BMI 21.3 ± 3.4 kg/m2) participated in "The Intercollegiate Artistic Athlete Research Assessment (TIAARA)" study. We assessed dance training volume, body composition, and habitual diet. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (means ± SD). Two-sample t-tests were conducted to compare reported intake values versus sports nutrition recommendations. Two-tailed Pearson correlations (r) were computed for body composition and dietary intake (p < 0.05). Results: Collegiate dancers were enrolled in 16 ± 2.09 semester credits, with 7.7 ± 3.8 credits as dance movement courses and an additional 3.0 ± 1.5 h/week of rehearsal time. Body composition assessments included fat mass (24.4 ± 6.8%), lean mass (LM) (42.4 ± 10.1 kg), and total body water (32.6 ± 4.6 L). Habitual diets reflected a low-calorie diet (1399 ± 648 kcal/d), with ~20% of dancers consuming a very low-calorie diet (≤1000 kcal/d). Dancers reported under-consuming dietary protein (54.3 ± 26.2 g) and carbohydrate (171.8 ± 77.8 g). LM was positively correlated with daily total energy (r = 0.333), fat (r = 0.37), protein (r = 0.349), and leucine intake (r = 0.352). Background/Objectives: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally, and it negatively impacts diet and quality of life, increasing the risk of recurrence. Adhering to World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) lifestyle guidelines, such as healthy eating habits and nutritional status, can help in primary and secondary cancer prevention. However, no questionnaire was found for self-assessment of these guidelines for the Brazilian population. The aim of this study is to carry out content validity, pilot, and usability testing of the self-administered digital instrument "PrevCancer" assessing adherence to the WCRF/AICR recommendations in Brazilian female breast cancer survivors. Methods: We conducted a psychometric study that involved the development of an instrument based on WCRF/AICR recommendations. Assessment of content validity involved the Content Validity Index (CVI) based on expert assessments (n = 7). The pilot study involved the System Usability Scale (SUS) after applying the developed instrument (n = 65) and anthropometric assessment for convergent validity by female participants (n = 55). The final usability test consisted of evaluating the satisfaction with the instrument of women with breast cancer (n = 14). Results: The "PrevCancer" instrument demonstrated good content (CVI = 1.0) as well as good usability and acceptability in the pilot study (mean SUS score = 88.1). The convergent validity stage demonstrated positive associations between the PrevCancer parameters and anthropometric parameters (p < 0.001). In the final usability study (mean SUS score = 90.3), participants' receptivity to the instrument was excellent. Objective: Approximately 30% of adults globally suffer from sleep disorders. However, there are few longitudinal studies on the association between dietary vitamin C and sleep disorders. This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary vitamin C intake and various types of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea and insomnia. Methods: We enrolled 68,221 participants from the UK Biobank. Dietary vitamin C intake was assessed using a 24 h dietary recall questionnaire. We employed a Cox regression model to assess the association between dietary vitamin C and sleep disorders and used restricted cubic spline models to investigate potential nonlinear relationships. Stratified and sensitivity analyses were also conducted to validate the findings. Results: The results indicated that vitamin C intake at the Q4 level (132.88–191.51 mg/d) was significantly associated with a reduced risk of sleep disorders, with an HR (95% CI) of 0.78 (0.65–0.94), and against sleep apnea, with an HR (95% CI) of 0.75 (0.62–0.92). The protective effect persisted significant in stratified analyses of men and those aged ≤ 60 years; the results were consistent in the sensitivity analyses. Background: Obesity in childhood and adolescence has reached epidemic proportions in recent decades. Methods: In the present study, we determined the concentrations of apelin-12, vaspin and resistin in 106 children and adolescents with overweight or obesity before and after the implementation of a multidisciplinary, personalized lifestyle intervention program of diet, sleep and exercise for 1 year. All subjects attended our Center for the Prevention and Management of Overweight and Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence. Results: Following the lifestyle intervention, there were significant decreases in BMI (p < 0.01), apelin-12 (p < 0.05) and resistin (p < 0.01) concentrations, and an increase in vaspin (p < 0.01) concentration. Glucose was the best positive predictor of apelin-12 (b = 0.236, p < 0.05), and osteopontin was the best negative predictor of changes in apelin-12 (b = −0.299, p < 0.05). Vaspin correlated positively with adiponectin (b = 0.29, p < 0.05), while vitamin D (b = 0.621, p < 0.05) was the best positive predictor of vaspin. BMI z score (b = −0.794, p < 0.05), HDL (b = −0.284, p < 0.05) and HbA1C (b = −0.262, p < 0.05) were the best negative predictors of changes in vaspin. BMI z score was the best positive predictor of resistin (b = 0.437, p < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggest that apelin-12, vaspin and resistin correlate with indices of obesity, glucose, lipids and bone metabolism, while interaction with other proteins, such as osteopontin and adiponectin, was also noted.
