Objective: To evaluate the association between Erectile dysfunction (ED) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in adult American males using a large database. Methods: The relationship between ED and PAD prevalence among participants in the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database was assessed using a series of statistical analyses. ED was evaluated based on a single-item measure of self-reported erection problems from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study. PAD was defined as ankle-brachial index (ABI) < 0.9 in at least one leg. Multifactorial logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between ED and PAD. Results: A total of 2394 participants were enrolled, of whom 905 individuals (37.8%) were diagnosed with ED. After adjusting for confounding variables, the association between ED and PAD remained positive, with an odds ratio of 2.05 (95% confidence interval 1.24-3.39). Subgroup analysis revealed that the relationship between ED and PAD was significant in patients aged >50 years old, without hypertension, without diabetes, without cardiovascular disease, without high cholesterol, former smokers, low physical activity levels, and a body mass index of 25-30 (P < 0.05). In addition, all subgroups analyzed were evaluated for any potential interaction, and no statistically significant association was discovered. Conclusions: In a sample of US adults aged ≥40, this cross-sectional study found that ED is related to a higher occurrence of PAD. Background/Objectives: Some vascular alterations such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or arterial stiffness can alter perfusion of the limbs, so we wondered if this is reflected in the temperature of the soles of the feet of diabetic patients who did not have a diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease. Foot sole temperature was correlated with the ankle–brachial index (ABI), carotid—femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and arterial age. Methods: A total of 175 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, without a previous diagnosis of PAD, were recruited. Comorbidities, anthropometry, biochemical analysis results, temperature, ABI, cfPWV, baPWV, and arterial age were recorded. Forty-two temperature records were obtained from the sole of the foot with an FLIR T865 thermal imaging camera. ABI, cfPWV, baPWV, and arterial age were obtained using plethysmographic and oscillometric methods. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS v.29.0 (correlations and multiple linear regression models). Results: All temperature points analyzed correlated negatively with ABI (p < 0.001) and rho values ranged from −0.168 to −0.210. Likewise, cfPWV, baPWV, and arterial age had similar results, since most temperature records showed low rho values and a negative correlation with these parameters. Four models were developed to explain the variables of interest. Temperature was involved in all of them. The temperature of the first toe was included in the prediction of cfPWV, baPWV, and arterial age. Conclusions: There is an inversely proportional relationship between temperature and ABI, cfPWV, baPWV, and arterial age in diabetic patients without a previous diagnosis of arterial disease. Objective: There is limited evidence available regarding intermittent tibial artery compressibility in the published literature. This investigation looks to determine the existence of intermittent tibial artery compressibility, in the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients underwent noninvasive arterial physiologic testing. An ankle-brachial index (ABI) ≥1.40 was defined as noncompressible and classified into 4 subgroups: (1) noncompressible single occurrence (NC-S), (2) noncompressible multiple occurrence (NC-M), (3) compressible to noncompressible (C-NC), and (4) intermittently compressible (I-C) ABI. Normal patients were compared to these noncompressible subgroups. Selective risk factors were compared in the C-NC and I-C ABI patient groups. Results: Of the 13 881 patients that were evaluated, 89% had compressible tibial arteries and 11% were noncompressible. Intermittent tibial artery compressibility was present in 11.3% of the patients, with noncompressible arteries. There were 718 patients from the NC-M, C-NC, and I-C subgroupings that had 3014 follow-up exams, over mean duration of 38 ± 27.7 months. The C-NC and I-C subgroup patients averaged 3.3 and 3.6 calcification risk factors, respectively. Conclusion: A subset of patients with intermittent tibial artery compressibility was confirmed in the noninvasive vascular laboratory. Background: The oscillometrically measured ankle-brachial index (omABI), which is determined by the ratio of ankle to brachial systolic blood pressure measured through oscillography, has been demonstrated as a robust predictor of cardiovascular events. However, the reliability of mean arterial pressure measured by oscillography may be higher than that of systolic blood pressure based on the principle of oscillographic oscillation. We aimed to compare the predictive value of oscillometrically measured ankle-tobrachial mean arterial pressure ratio (omMAPR) and omABI for cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Methods: The observation cohort consisted of a total of 37 803 employees from the Chinese Kailuan Group who underwent limb blood pressure measurements during their participation in physical examination between 2010 and 2017. Results: After an average follow-up period of 3 years, a total of 589 cardiovascular events and 570 cases of all-cause mortality were observed. The predictive performance of omMAPR was found to be slightly superior to omABI in terms of cardiovascular events (C-statistics: 0.55 vs. 0.51, P < .001) and all-cause mortality (C-statistics: 0.60 vs. 0.55, P < .001). After adjusting for confounders, within a specific range (omMAPR ≤ 1.06 or omABI ≤ 1.12), each 0.1-unit increase in omMAPR was associated with reductions of 14% (HR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.77-0.96) and 23% (HR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.70-0.84) in cardiovascular events and allcause mortality, respectively, while each 0.1-unit increase in omABI was associated with reductions of 12% (HR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79-0.97) and 22% (HR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.72-0.85) in cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality, respectively. However, once out of that range (omMAPR > 1.06 or omABI > 1.12), neither omMAPR nor omABI was significantly associated with cardiovascular events or all-cause mortality. Conclusion: Both omMAPR and omABI within specific ranges (omMAPR ≤ 1.06 or omABI ≤ 1.12) were independent predictors for cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Moreover, omMAPR exhibited a slightly superior predictive ability compared to omABI in relation to cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Background and Objectives: The interrelationship between thyroid function and the state of the cardiovascular system has been investigated both in preclinical and human studies. However, it remains unclear whether there is any association between thyroid hormones and features of subclinical cardiovascular dysfunction in euthyroid patients. Material and Methods: This study involved 45 people (females: 57.8%) with no thyroid disease who, during planned hospitalization, underwent thyroid ultrasound, determination of biochemical parameters of thyroid function, and measurement of ankle-brachial index (ABI) and toe-brachial index (TBI). People with signs of acute illness or a deterioration of their health were excluded. Results: Significant correlations were found between free triiodothyronine (FT3) and several parameters of both ABI (R = 0.347; p = 0.019 for the mean ABI taken from right side and left side values) and TBI (R = 0.396; p = 0.007 for the mean TBI taken from right side and left side values), as well as the maximal toe pressure (TP) taken from right side and left side values (R = 0.304; p = 0.045). Thyrotropin (TSH) was shown to be significantly correlated only with the maximal TBI value (taken from right side and left side values) (R = 0.318; p = 0.033), whereas free thyroxin (FT4) was shown to be significantly correlated only with the minimal TBI value (taken from right side and left side values) (R = 0.381; p = 0.01). Thyroid volume (TV) was shown to be correlated with TP (R = 0.4; p = 0.008 for the mean TP taken from right side and left side values) and some parameters of TBI value (R = 0.332; p = 0.028 for the mean TBI taken from right side and left side values), but no significant correlations were found between TVand ABI parameters. Patients with a mean ABI value ≤ 1.0 or a mean TBI value ≤ 0.75 have lower TSH, FT3, FT4, and TV than the rest of the study population, but the difference was statistically significant only for FT3. Conclusions: Even in a population of euthyroid patients with no diagnosed thyroid disease, there are some significant correlations between the volume and function of the thyroid gland and the selected features of subclinical cardiovascular dysfunction such as ABI and TBI. The purpose of this study was to compare different high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols with different lengths of work and rest times for a single session (all three had identical work-to-rest ratios and exercise intensities) for cardiac auto-regulation using a wearable device. With a randomized counter-balanced crossover, 13 physically active young male adults (age: 19.4 years, BMI: 21.9 kg/m2) were included. The HIIT included a warm-up of at least 5 min and three protocols of 10 s/50 s (20 sets), 20 s/100 s (10 sets), and 40 s/200 s (5 sets), with intensities ranging from 115 to 130% Wattmax. Cardiac auto-regulation was measured using a non-invasive method and a wearable device, including HRV and vascular function. Immediately after the HIIT session, the 40 s/200 s protocol produced the most intense stimulation in R-R interval (Δ-33.5%), ln low-frequency domain (Δ-42.6%), ln high-frequency domain (Δ-73.4%), and ln LF/HF ratio (Δ416.7%, all p < 0.05) compared to other protocols of 10 s/50 s and 20 s/100 s. The post-exercise hypotension in the bilateral ankle area was observed in the 40 s/200 s protocol only at 5 min after HIIT (right: Δ-12.2%, left: Δ-12.6%, all p < 0.05). This study confirmed that a longer work time might be more effective in stimulating cardiac auto-regulation using a wearable device, despite identical work-to-rest ratios and exercise intensity. This comprehensive review delves into the impact of low-intensity resistance training coupled with blood flow restriction (BFR) on arterial stiffness, evaluated through the ankle-brachial index (ABI). This assessment seeks to discern any discernible alterations in arterial stiffness attributed to this unique training approach. Employing systematic search via PubMed and Google Scholar databases, this review examined research articles focusing on the chronic effects of resistance training with BFR on the ABI. Inclusion criteria encompassed studies assessing this effect across various age groups while concentrating on healthy individuals and publications in the English language. Among the extensive array of studies, a selective inclusion of 5 research articles formed the foundational basis of this analysis. Synthesizing analyses from these studies illuminated the safety of BFR training, particularly at intensities around 20-30% or using elastic bands. Intriguingly, these modalities exhibited no significant impact on alterations in the ABI, notably observed within elderly subjects. However, a notable scarcity in studies focusing on young subjects warrants a more comprehensive investigation into this specific demographic. The findings of this review underscore the safety and efficacy of BFR resistance training methodologies, especially protocols utilizing 20-30% 1RM or incorporating elastic bands of 75-repetition-scheme, showcasing no significant impact on the ankle-brachial index, particularly in the elderly population over intervention periods not exceeding 12 weeks. Encouraging practitioners, these established methodologies offer safe practices for the elderly. However, the evident research gap in young subjects necessitates more expansive investigations. Introduction: Female sexual dysfunction is very common, but its determinants remain under‐investigated. Vasculogenic impairments are suggested to be related to female sexual dysfunction, but previous literature regarding the association is scarce. This study aims to study the association between arterial health and female sexual function in women in their 60s. Material and methods: The sample for this cross‐sectional study comprised 117 women (aged 60–64 years) who participated in the Finnish Retirement and Aging study. Arterial health was measured according to the participants' pulse wave velocity, ankle–brachial index, blood pressure, and pulse pressure. Sexual function was measured using the Female Sexual Function Index, which resulted in a total score and six sub‐scores. Associations were examined using multivariable regression analyses, which were adjusted for age, relationship happiness, systemic menopausal hormone therapy and/or local estrogen, smoking, alcohol risk use, body mass index, and depressive symptoms. Results: Higher diastolic blood pressure was associated with a higher total Female Sexual Function Index score (β = 0.24, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.07–0.41) and with higher desire (β = 0.02, 95% CI 0.01–0.04), arousal (β = 0.04, 95% CI 0.01–0.08), lubrication (β = 0.04, 95% CI 0.002–0.08), satisfaction (β = 0.03, 95% CI 0.003–0.05), and pain (β = 0.06, 95% CI 0.02–0.10) sub‐scores. Also, higher ankle–brachial index was associated with higher satisfaction sub‐score (β = 2.10, 95% CI 0.44–3.73) and lower pulse pressure was associated with higher orgasm sub‐score (β = 0.03, 95% CI 0.0002–0.06). Other associations between ankle–brachial index and Female Sexual Function Index scores were statistically insignificant, but considering the magnitude the findings may imply clinical significance. Systolic blood pressure and pulse wave velocity were not associated with sexual function. Conclusions: This study suggested a plausible association between higher diastolic blood pressure and female sexual function, but considering clinical significance our findings suggest an association between higher ankle–brachial index and good sexual function in women in their 60s. Lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) involving the aortoiliac, femoropopliteal, and infrapopliteal arterial segments. PAD remains a largely underdiagnosed and undertreated condition. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a simple and widely available test that is key detection tool in the diagnosis of PAD and is prognostic for mortality and morbidity. The cardiovascular (CV) team is a diverse array of health care clinicians (eg, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants/associates, pharmacists, podiatrists) who have the qualifications and skills to be able to recognize when patients are at risk for PAD and perform an ABI. Background and aims: Ankle brachial index (ABI) is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality, but it is unclear whether ABI is associated with cardiovascular mortality in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The current study aimed to evaluate the association between ABI with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in patients with NAFLD. Methods: We performed a cohort study using the data of the1999–2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data of adults. Mortality data were followed up to December 2015. NAFLD was defined by the hepatic steatosis index or the US fatty liver index. ABI was classified into three groups: ABI ≤ 0.9 (low value); 0.9 < ABI ≤ 1.1 (borderline value); ABI greater than 1.1 (normal value). Results: We found that low ABI was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality in patients with NAFLD (HR: 2.42, 95% CI 1.10–5.33 for low value ABI vs normal value ABI, P for trend = 0.04), and the relationship was linearly and negatively correlated in the range of ABI < 1.4. However, low ABI was not associated with all-cause mortality in patients with NAFLD. Stratified by cardiovascular disease, ABI remains inversely correlated with cardiovascular mortality in NAFLD patients without cardiovascular disease. Stratified by diabetes, ABI is inversely correlated with cardiovascular mortality in NAFLD patients regardless of diabetes status. Conclusions: Low ABI is independently associated with higher cardiovascular mortality in NAFLD cases. Objective: Abnormal ankle-brachial index (ABI) determinations may be associated with an increased risk of incident strokes. However, the impact of previous strokes in this relationship is unknown. We estimated the role of previous strokes on the association between abnormal ABI determinations and incident stroke risk in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Atahualpa residents aged ≥60 years received ABI determinations, cardiovascular risk factors assessment, and brain MRIs. ABIs were classified as abnormal if ≤0.9 or ≥1.4. Incident strokes were diagnosed by a certified neurologist with the aid of a post-event MRI. Poisson regression models were fitted to estimate stroke incidence rate ratio (IRR) according to categories of ABI. Results: Analysis included 389 participants (mean age: 68.2 ± 8.1 years). Eighty-six persons (22%) had abnormal ABI determinations. Incident strokes occurred in 38 (9.8%) individuals after a mean follow-up of 6.1 ± 1.9 years. Abnormal ABIs were associated with incident strokes in unadjusted analyses (p = 0.002) as well as in a Poisson regression model adjusted for demographics and clinical covariates (IRR: 2.57; 95% C.I.: 1.29–5.13), but not when the model was adjusted for neuroimaging covariates (IRR: 1.46; 95% C.I.: 0.67–3.20). Interaction models showed that having both abnormal ABI and non-lacunar strokes at baseline made the individual 9.7 times more likely to have an incident stroke (95% C.I.: 3.87–24.4). The risk was reduced to 2.2 (95% C.I.: 0.96–5.13) for those who only had an abnormal ABI. Background: The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is multifactorial and diverse. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are involved in these processes. It is suggested that inflammation may represent a novel and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this study aimed to gain insight into the relationship between plasma concentrations of TNF, VEGF, IL-6, and radiological parameters of atherosclerosis progression in patients with early-onset coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: Seventy clinically stable patients were included in the study group. The age range for men was no more than 50 years, while for women, it was no more than 55 years. Fasting blood samples were obtained for plasma TNF, VEGF, and IL-6 protein measurements. Plasma cytokine concentrations were measured via ELISA. Doppler ultrasound of the carotid and peripheral arteries was performed in all patients. Results: After Bonferroni correction, there were no significant correlations between any cytokine and radiological parameters of atherosclerosis progression in our patients. Conclusions: The determination of plasma TNF, IL-6, and VEGF levels may not be a reliable marker for the vascular condition, and the measurement of these cytokines in plasma cannot replace the classical radiological examination of the vessels. Increased plasma homocysteine (Hcy) has been identified as one of the important risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, the association between plasma Hcy and peripheral artery disease (PAD) is still controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between plasma Hcy and PAD and the potential modifier factors in Chinese hypertensive adults. A total of 25 300 hypertensive patients aged 18 years or older were included in the analysis in this cross‐sectional study. The outcome was PAD, which defined as an ankle‐brachial index ≤0.90 in either limb. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between plasma Hcy and PAD. The median plasma Hcy was 14.00 (interquartile range: 11.60–17.80) μmol/L. There was a significant positive association between plasma Hcy and PAD (per SD increment; OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.06–1.19). Patients in the upper plasma Hcy tertile (≥16.16 μmol/L) were associated with a 53% increased risk of PAD compared with patients in the lower tertile (<12.33 μmol/L) after adjustment for multiple potential confounders. Subgroup analyses showed the association between Hcy and PAD was robust among various strata. Among Chinese adults with hypertension, plasma Hcy is an independent risk factor for PAD. Background: Peripheral artery disease is a condition that causes narrowing of the arteries, impairing circulation to the extremities. Globally, it affects millions of people and is more prevalent in older adults and those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. There is an overlap specific to polyvascular patients, and almost 50% of patients with PAD have coronary artery disease. Compelling evidence reveals a noteworthy association between PAD and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in individuals experiencing acute coronary syndrome (ACS) but limited knowledge exists regarding the influence of PAD on left ventricular systolic function during ACS. Methods: In a retrospective case–control study, we examined 100 participants who presented with ACS (mean age = 61.03 years, 80 [80%] males). The patients were divided into two groups: the ACS-PAD group (32 subjects, 74% of them with STEMI, 10% with NSTEMI, and 16% with NSTEACS) and the ACS-nonPAD group (68 participants). Results: This study highlighted that PAD negatively impacts patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). These patients were likely to experience a decline of approximately 19.3% in their left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) compared to the ACS-nonPAD group (p = 0.003) and presented a worse clinical status (the PAD group correlated with Killip class IV, p = 0.049). Conclusion: Our analysis indicates that patients diagnosed with NSTEACS and PAD tend to have a higher LVEF of over 55% and a lower HEART score. Patients with PAD tend to have a functionally higher EF but clinically present with more unstable scenarios (pulmonary edema and cardiogenic shock). This is mainly driven by a higher prevalence of HFpEF in the PAD group. Looking closer at the PAD group, they have a higher incidence of comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, CAD, and stroke, as well as being more active smokers. People with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have a high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, which remains the leading cause of death in this population. Despite the improved control of several classic risk factors, particularly better glycaemic control, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality continue to be significantly higher than in the general population. In routine clinical practice, estimating cardiovascular risk (CVR) in people with T1D using scales or equations is often imprecise because much of the evidence comes from pooled samples of people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and T1D or from extrapolations of studies performed on people with T2D. Given that T1D onsets at a young age, prolonged exposure to the disease and its consequences (e.g., hyperglycaemia, changes in lipid metabolism or inflammation) have a detrimental impact on cardiovascular health. Therefore, it is critical to have tools that allow for the early identification of those individuals with a higher CVR and thus be able to make the most appropriate management decisions in each case. In this sense, atherosclerosis is the prelude to most cardiovascular events. People with diabetes present pathophysiological alterations that facilitate atherosclerosis development and that may imply a greater vulnerability of atheromatous plaques. Screening for subclinical atherosclerosis using various techniques, mainly imaging, has proven valuable in predicting cardiovascular events. Its use enables the reclassification of CVR and, therefore, an individualised adjustment of therapeutic management. However, the available evidence in people with T1D is scarce. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for peripheral arteriosclerosis (PAS) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and potential ultrasound indicators that could be used to improve detection. Method: Outpatients seeking care between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2020, in The First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University were prospectively recruited. Subjects were divided into COPD and non-COPD (control) groups, and the COPD group was further divided into PAD and non-PAD subgroup, at the same time, PAS and non-PAS subgroup. Indicators of PAD -ankle-brachial index (ABI), indicators of PAS- pulse wave velocity (PWV), and ultrasound indices -peak systolic blood flow velocity (PSV) and blood flow acceleration velocity (AccV) were compared. Result: Sixty-nine (61.6%) of 112 enrolled subjects had COPD. COPD patients had higher age, and blood pressure (BP)lower than controls. Seventeen (24.6%) COPD patients had PAD, the prevalence of PAD increases with the decrease of lung function, and seven (16.3%) non-COPD patients had PAD, however, there was no significant statistical difference between COPD and non-COPD groups. Fifty (72.5%) COPD patients had PAS, and thirty-four (79.1%) non-COPD patients had PAS, however, there was also no significant difference. The PAS subgroup had higher age, body mass index(BMI), body fat percentage(BFP), lower FEV1 and FEV1/FVC, as well as higher levels of right brachial artery and left dorsalis pedis artery AccV. Factors that correlated with ABI were 6MWD, post-bronchodilator FEV1, FEV1/ FVC, and maximal middle expiratory flow between 75% and 25% of FVC. Age, BP, and 6MWD, but not pulmonary function, were associated with brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV). There was a positive correlation between baPWV and radial artery AccV bilaterally. Conclusion: Radial artery AccV correlated well with baPWV, which suggests that ultrasound could be used to assess both morphological and functional changes in vessels, may serving as a better method to identify PAS in high-risk COPD patients. Background Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is associated with lower physical activity but less is known about its association with daily patterns of activity. We examined the cross-sectional association between ankle–brachial index (ABI) and objectively measured patterns of physical activity among Hispanic/Latino adults. Methods We analyzed data from 7 688 participants (aged 45–74 years) in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. ABI was categorized as low (≤0.90, indicating PAD), borderline low (0.91–0.99), normal (1.00–1.40), and high (>1.40, indicating incompressible ankle arteries). Daily physical activity metrics derived from accelerometer data included: log of total activity counts (LTAC), total log-transformed activity counts (TLAC), and active-to-sedentary transition probability (ASTP). Average differences between ABI categories in physical activity, overall and by 4-hour time-of-day intervals, were assessed using linear regression and mixed-effects models, respectively. Results In Hispanic/Latino adults, 5.3% and 2.6% had low and high ABIs, respectively. After adjustment, having a low compared to a normal ABI was associated with lower volume (LTAC = −0.13, p <.01; TLAC = −74.4, p =.04) and more fragmented physical activity (ASTP = 1.22%, p <.01). Having a low ABI was linked with more fragmented physical activity after 12 pm (p <.01). Having a high ABI was associated with lower volumes of activity (TLAC = −132.0, p =.03). Conclusions Having a low or high ABI is associated with lower and more fragmented physical activity in Hispanic/Latino adults. In adults with low ABI, physical activity is more fragmented in the afternoon to evening. Growth and differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is a stress-associated cytokine of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily. The inflammatory and angiogenic effects of GDF-15 in atherosclerosis are controversial, and its correlation with the long asymptomatic phase of the disease is not well understood. Coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) are sensitive markers of subclinical atherosclerosis. To date, only a few studies have examined the impact of GDF-15 on coronary artery calcification, and the association between GDF-15 and ABI has not been evaluated. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the possible relationship between serum GDF-15 concentrations and CACS and ABI in a Caucasian population sample of middle-aged (35–65 years) and elderly (> 65 years) people. In addition to recording demographic and anthropometric characteristics, atherosclerotic risk factors, and laboratory tests including serum HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP); GDF-15 level, cardiac computed tomography, and ABI measurements were also performed. A total of 269 asymptomatic individuals (men, n = 125; median age, 61.5 [IQR, 12.7] years) formed the basis of this study. Participants were divided into two groups according to their age (middle-aged, n = 175 and elderly, n = 94). Hypertension and diabetes mellitus were significantly more prevalent and CACS values and HbA1c, NT-proBNP, and GDF-15 levels were significantly higher (all p < 0.001) in the elderly group compared to the middle-aged group. Multivariate ridge regression analysis revealed a significant positive association between GDF-15 and CACS (middle-aged group: β = 0.072, p = 0.333; elderly group: β = 0.148, p = 0.003), and between GDF-15 and ABI (middle-aged group: β = 0.062, p = 0.393; elderly group: β = 0.088, p = 0.041) only in the elderly group. Our results show that GDF-15 is not only a useful biomarker of inflammation but can also predict early signs of asymptomatic atherosclerosis, especially in elderly people with chronic systemic inflammation associated with aging (inflammaging). This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the mortality risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) by screening for depressive symptoms and peripheral artery disease (PAD). We enrolled patients aged ≥60 years who had undergone assessments of both the ankle–brachial index (ABI) and the five-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-5). PAD and depression were defined as ABI ≤ 0.90 and GDS-5 ≥ 1, respectively. The primary endpoint was total mortality. In 1673 enrolled patients, the prevalence of PAD was higher in those with depression than in those without depression (8.9% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.021). After a median follow-up of 56.6 months (interquartile range: 47.0–62.3 months), a total of 168 (10.0%) deaths occurred. The patients in the depression and PAD subgroup had the highest hazard ratio of mortality, followed by the PAD without depression subgroup and the depression without PAD subgroup (2.209, 95%CI: 1.158–4.217; 1.958, 95%CI: 1.060–3.618; and 1.576, 95%CI: 1.131–2.196; respectively) in comparison to the patients without depression and PAD after adjustment for associated factors. In conclusion, a combination of depression and PAD predicted the highest mortality risk. Screening for depression and PAD is recommended in patients aged ≥60 years with type 2 DM. This cross‐sectional study assessed the risk factors for infection in 150 diabetic foot patients admitted to the Xiamen University Hospital between October 2020 and October 2022. Patients were categorised as infected (n = 80) or uninfected (n = 70) cohorts. The diabetic foot was evaluated using the American Diabetic Foot Grading system, whereas ulcers were categorised using Wagner's method. Analysed were patient‐specific information, clinical data and risk factors including neuropathy, arterial disease and foot deformities. Our findings revealed no statistically significant differences between infected and uninfected cohorts concerning age, body mass index, gender, duration of diabetes or ankle‐brachial index values (p > 0.05). However, infected group had a higher proportion of smokers and reduced socio‐economic status (p < 0.05). Wagner grades indicated a greater severity in the infected group, with grade 3, grade 4 and grade 5 differing significantly (p < 0.05). Comparative analysis of ulcer characteristics revealed no statistically significant differences in ulcer surface area and depth, but the infected group had a higher prevalence of osteomyelitis and a greater number of ulcers (p > 0.05). Blood vessel complications, retinopathy, the presence of three or more ulcers, osteomyelitis and diabetic nephropathy were substantially more prevalent in the infected group, as determined by univariate analysis (p < 0.05). Subsequent multivariate logistic analysis revealed that patients with blood vessel complications, retinopathy, osteomyelitis, diabetic nephropathy and three or more ulcers were at increased risk for infection (p < 0.05). In addition, lifestyle factors, such as smoking, sedentary behaviour, inadequate foot hygiene, obesity and poor glycaemic control, were also associated with higher infection rates. A multivariate analysis of foot wound factors revealed that deeper, longer and recurrent lesions increased the likelihood of infection. Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated bacterium from the infected group's bacterial culture, followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The study enhanced our comprehension of the multifactorial risk factors associated with infections in diabetic foot patients, highlighting the need for thorough clinical evaluation, lifestyle modification and vigilant infection control. Objectives: The study aims to explore clinical features linked to prominent ankle-brachial index (ABI) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), evaluating its diagnostic utility for peripheral arterial and cardiovascular diseases, and establishing cutoffs for risk prediction in the T2DM population. Methods: The study recruited 260 outpatients with T2DM, using random sampling at Fakir Mohan Medical College, Balasore, Odisha for over 2 years from 10th April 2021 to 10th April 2023. Ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurements were taken, and participants underwent carotid arterial ultrasonography and lower limb arterial ultrasonographic examinations to assess peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Logit regression and ROC analysis were employed to identify independent risk factors, evaluate ABI's diagnostic potential, and determine cutoffs for predicting CVD and PAD. Results: The study revealed a parabolic prevalence curve, demonstrating that individuals having either low ABI (= 0.9) or high ABI (> 1.3) had increased risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A major predisposing factor for both CVD and peripheral arterial disease in patients was the presence of ABI > 1.3, which was prevalent in 14% of the cohort. The study established ABI cutoffs of 1.43 for predicting CVD and 1.45 for PAD, exhibiting specificity rates exceeding 80%, while sensitivity varied at 37.3%. Conclusion: The study underscores the clinical significance of a U-shaped prevalence curve for ankle-brachial index, revealing that high as well as low indices are independently associated with enhanced risks of peripheral arterial disease and cardiovascular disease in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The effect of a low ankle-brachial index (ABI) in patients with advanced-stage diabetic kidney disease is not fully understood. This study investigates the prevalence of a low ABI in patients with advanced-stage diabetic kidney disease, which was defined as a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥300 mg/g and an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) between 15–60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Furthermore, the association between a low ABI and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) was determined. This single-center, retrospective, cohort study included 529 patients with advanced-stage diabetic kidney disease who were stratified into groups according to the ABI: high (>1.3), normal (0.9–1.3), and low (<0.9). The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional analysis were used to examine the association between the ABI and ESKD. A total of 42.5% of patients with a low ABI progressed to ESKD. A low ABI was associated with a greater risk of ESKD (hazard ratio (HR): 1.073). After adjusting for traditional chronic kidney disease risk factors, a low ABI remained associated with a greater risk of ESKD (HR: 1.758; 95% confidence interval: 1.243–2.487; p = 0.001). These results indicate that patients with a low ABI should be monitored carefully. Purpose: Peripheral artery disease causes severe morbidity, especially in diabetics and the elderly. There is a need for accurate noninvasive detection of peripheral arterial stenosis. The study has tested the hypothesis that arterial stenosis and the associated adaptation of the downstream circulation yield characteristic changes in the leg perfusion dynamics that enable early diagnosis, utilizing impedance plethysmography. Methods: The arterial perfusion dynamic was derived from impedance plethysmography (IPG). Two degrees of arterial stenosis were emulated by inflating a blood-pressure cuff around the thigh to 45 and 90 mmHg, in healthy volunteers (n = 30). IPG signals were acquired continuously throughout the experiment. Ankle and brachial blood pressures were measured at the beginning of each experiment and at the end of each emulated stenosis phase. Results: Thigh compressions did not affect the pulse-transit time, but prolonged the time to the peak perfusion wave. Segmentation of the perfusion upstroke into two phases, at the time point of maximum acceleration (MAT), revealed that arterial compression prolonged only the initial slow phase duration (SPd). The MAT and SPd were proportional to the emulated stenosis severity and detected the arterial stenosis with high sensitivity (> 93%) and specificity (100%). The SPd increased from 46.4 ± 21.2 ms at baseline to 75.4 ± 38.5 ms and 145 ± 39 ms under 45 mmHg and 90 mmHg compressions (p < 0.001), without affecting the pulse-transit time. Conclusions: The novel method and indices can identify and grade the emulated arterial stenosis with high accuracy and may assist in differentiating between focal arterial stenosis and widespread arterial hardening. Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of atherosclerosis and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a simple and non-invasive test used to diagnose PAD. However, the prevalence of PAD in patients with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the association between PAD and clinical factors in this population is not well understood. Material and methodology: A total of 250 patients with established CVD were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The patients underwent ABI measurement and were evaluated for medical history and physical examination. The prevalence of PAD was determined based on ABI measurements (=0.90). Results: The overall prevalence of PAD in this patient population was 20%. Older age, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia were all significantly associated with PAD. Patients with PAD had a higher risk of cardiovascular events compared to those without PAD. Conclusion: PAD is common in patients with established CVD, and ABI measurement is a useful tool for identifying PAD in this population. The presence of PAD is also an important prognostic factor for future cardiovascular events. Therefore, clinicians should consider ABI measurement in patients with established CVD to identify PAD and initiate appropriate treatment to reduce the risk of future cardiovascular events. Toe–brachial index (TBI) measurement helps to detect peripheral artery disease (PAD) in patients with incompressible ankle arteries due to medial arterial calcification, which is most frequently associated with diabetes. We aimed to evaluate how an automated four-limb blood pressure monitor equipped with TBI measurement could contribute to PAD screening. In 117 patients (mean age 63.2 ± 12.8 years), ankle–brachial index (ABI) measurement was performed using the Doppler-method and the MESI mTablet. TBI was obtained via photoplethysmography (MESI mTablet, SysToe) and a laser Doppler fluxmeter (PeriFlux 5000). Lower limb PAD lesions were evaluated based on vascular imaging. A significant correlation was found between Doppler and MESI ankle–brachial index values (r = 0.672), which was stronger in non-diabetic (r = 0.744) than in diabetic (r = 0.562) patients. At an ABI cut-off of 0.9, Doppler (AUC = 0.888) showed a sensitivity/specificity of 67.1%/97.4%, MESI (AUC 0.891) exhibited a sensitivity/specificity of 57.0%/100%; at a cut-off of 1.0, MESI demonstrated a sensitivity/specificity of 74.7%/94.8%. The TBI values measured using the three devices did not differ significantly (p = 0.33). At a TBI cut-off of 0.7, MESI (AUC = 0.909) revealed a sensitivity/specificity of 92.1%/67.5%. Combining MESI ABI and TBI measurements recognised 92.4% of PAD limbs. Using an ABI cut-off level of 1.0 and sequential TBI measurement increases the sensitivity of the device in detecting PAD. We aimed to evaluate the incremental prognostic value after incorporation of the ankle-brachial index (ABI) into the 10-year pool cohort equation (PCE) risk model in patients with multiple risk factors (MRFs). A total of 4332 MRFs patients were divided into 2 groups as ABI ≤.9 or >.9. The primary outcome was hard cardiovascular events (hCVE: including cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or ischemic stroke) over a median follow-up of 36 months. The Cox proportional hazards survival model, C-statistic, and net reclassification indices (NRI) were used. The occurrence of the primary outcome in the ABI ≤.9 group (3.7%) was significantly greater than in the ABI >.9 group (1.3%), P <.001. ABI is an independent predictor of hCVE in addition to the variables in the standard risk model (age, gender, and smoking status). ABI modestly improved the C-index when added to the PCE risk model (PCE.70 vs ABI+PCE.74). The addition of ABI to the PCE risk model did not significantly improve the classification of patients (NRI -.029; 95% CI: −.215 to.130). The purpose of the study was to characterize lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (LEPAD) in a series of kidney transplant patients and to assess the impact on adverse outcomes. A retrospective cohort study was conducted including kidney transplant recipient patients who underwent screening for LEPAD. The outcomes evaluated were classified as perioperative and post-transplant, including cardiovascular events, amputation, mortality, and loss of the graft. A total of 141 renal transplant patients screened for LEPAD were identified, with an average follow-up of 3 years. LEPAD occurred in 14.2% (20/141). No differences in cardiovascular risk factors were found between the groups, except for smoking (45% vs. 24%, p < 0.05). In the group with LEPAD, the most compromised anatomical segment was the infrapopliteus, with no iliac involvement found. The Cox proportional hazards model indicated that the variables age, gender, and weight were significant in patients with LEPAD. There were no differences between the groups in terms of graft loss and death. The infrapopliteal segment is the area of greatest stenosis in kidney transplant patients with LEPAD. The association between white blood cell (WBC) count and arterial stiffness in patients with hypertension is not well-documented. We aimed to examine the relationships of total WBC count with arterial stiffness and risk of macrovascular damage in hypertensive patients. A total of 631 hypertensive adults (mean age: 65.6 years) were included in the present study. Arterial stiffness was determined by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI). Macrovascular damage was defined as baPWV >1.8 m/s or ABI <.9. The dose-response associations were assessed by multivariate linear or logistic regression models. After multivariate adjustments, we observed a dose-response relationship between increasing total WBC count and arterial stiffness. Participants in the highest tertile of total WBC count showed a significantly elevated baPWV (β =.088; 95% CI:.021,.154; P trend =.010) and reduced ABI (β = −.027; 95% CI: −.046, −.008; P trend =.005), as compared with those in the first tertile. The association was similar in different subgroups. In addition, elevated total WBC count was related to a greater risk of macrovascular damage, as indicated by baPWV >1.8 m/s (OR = 1.86; 95% CI: 1.15, 2.99, comparing the extreme tertiles). The present study explored the relationship between the ankle-brachial index (ABI) (>.9) and all-cause or cardio-cerebrovascular mortality. Participant details were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2004. The association between baseline ABI and the risk of mortality was evaluated by a priori defined quartile categories and on a continuous scale (per.1-unit change) with Cox regression models adjusted for demographic and traditional risk factors. A total of 7087 individuals (age: 59.6 ± 12.8 years) were included; 3612 (51.0%) were male. After an average follow-up of 12.2 years, 1926 deaths occurred. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed that the lowest ABI quartile (<1.06) was associated with the highest risk of all-cause, cardio-cerebrovascular and cancer mortality (all P <.001). However, after adjusting for potential confounders, ABI ranging between 1.06 and 1.12 was associated with the lowest risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio.88, 95% confidence interval.78–1.00, P <.05) compared with the reference group (<1.06). Besides, splines showed the relationship was nonlinear (P <.05) and the inflection point was 1.11. In conclusion, the level of ABI associated with the lowest risk of all-cause mortality was 1.11, under which a lower ABI was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We aimed to examine this relation in a population that tends to be under-represented in research on the topic. In a prospective observational cohort study, residents of 45 nursing homes in Germany were screened for pathological ankle-brachial index (ABI) and observed for five years. Of 1333 participants (median age 84 years), 55.5% had a pathological ABI (≤0.9 or >1.4) on one or both legs. 84.7% of the probands with a low ABI (indicating PAD) had no previously known PAD diagnosis. The five-year mortality was 73.0%. Mortality was higher in individuals with a pathological ABI (76.5%) than in those with a normal ABI (68.7%, p = 0.003). An ABI > 1.4 was associated with a higher mortality (79.4%) than a reduced (74.7%) or normal ABI (68.7%, p = 0.011). Pathological ABI values were associated with an increase in mortality after correction for age, sex and all recorded comorbidities, including cardiac disease. Although PAD is highly prevalent in nursing home residents, it is underdiagnosed and undertreated. In the study cohort, both high and low ABI were important predictors of mortality. Background and Objectives: The role of adipokines in the development of atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) has not yet been fully elucidated. The effects of drugs on adipokine concentrations have only been evaluated in very few studies, although they may be of clinical importance. This study aimed to assess whether the concentrations of circulating adipokines could predict subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with T2DM, as well as their interactions with commonly used cardiovascular drugs. Materials and Methods: Our population-based cross-sectional multicentric study included 216 participants with T2DM but without previously diagnosed atherosclerosis. The carotid artery intima–media thickness (IMT), plaque and ankle–brachial index (ABI) metrics were measured. Resistin, visfatin, retinol-binding protein 4, high molecular weight adiponectin and leptin levels were evaluated using Luminex's xMAP technology. Results: Visfatin and resistin concentrations correlated positively with IMT (p = 0.002 and p = 0.009, respectively). The correlation of visfatin to IMT ≥ 1.0 mm was significant in males (p < 0.001). Visfatin had a positive correlation with IMT ≥ 1.0 mm or plaque (p = 0.008) but resistin only correlated with plaque (p = 0.049). Visfatin predicted IMT ≥ 1.0 mm or plaque in patients on β-blocker monotherapy (p = 0.031). Visfatin lost its ability to predict subclinical atherosclerosis in patients taking angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers or statins. After adjustments for risk factors for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular drugs, visfatin maintained an independent association with mean IMT (p = 0.003), IMT ≥ 1.0 mm or plaque (p = 0.005) and ABI ≤ 0.9 (p = 0.029). Conclusions: Visfatin could be used as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with T2DM, especially in males. There are a number of devastating complications associated with peripheral artery disease, including limb amputations and acute limb ischemia. Despite the overlap, atherosclerotic diseases have distinct causes that need to be differentiated and managed appropriately. In coronary atherosclerosis, thrombosis is often precipitated by rupture or erosion of fibrous caps around atheromatous plaques, which leads to acute coronary syndrome. Regardless of the extent of atherosclerosis, peripheral artery disease manifests itself as thrombosis. Two-thirds of patients with acute limb ischemia have thrombi associated with insignificant atherosclerosis. A local thrombogenic or remotely embolic basis of critical limb ischemia may be explained by obliterative thrombi in peripheral arteries of patients without coronary artery-like lesions. Studies showed that thrombosis of the above-knee arteries was more commonly due to calcified nodules, which are the least common cause of luminal thrombosis associated with acute coronary events in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Cardiovascular mortality was higher in peripheral artery disease without myocardial infarction/stroke than in myocardial infarction/stroke without peripheral artery disease. Adult patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) appear to be at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is particularly concerning as it is associated with myocardial infarction and stroke. Nevertheless, the incidence of PAD is still unknown. The authors prospectively recruited HIV-infected patients from the outpatient clinic of the Department of Internal Medicine in our center. We assessed ankle-brachial index (ABI) using the VaSera system™ (Fukuda Denshi Co., Ltd). Patients were grouped into 3 ABI levels: an ABI ≤0.90 was considered abnormal and evidence of PAD, an ABI 1.0 to 1.40 was considered normal, and 0.91 to 0.99 was considered borderline. Cardiovascular risk factors were compared across all 3 levels of ABI and were analyzed using multivariate ordinal logistic regression. Eight hundred ninety-two patients were recruited. The mean age was 42.9 ± 10.0 years and 458 (51.4%) were males. There were 704, 149, and 39 patients in the normal, borderline, and abnormal ABI groups, respectively. The latter group of 39 patients was considered to have PAD, yielding a prevalence of 4.37% (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.21-5.93). Sex ratio, age, education levels, smoking rate, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, prevalence of comorbidities with hypertension and coronary heart disease, median triglyceride level, reduced kidney function and HIV-1 RNA undetectable ratio, duration of HIV diagnosis, and duration on antiretroviral treatment were significantly different among 3 ABI subgroups. Independent risk factors associated with PAD were being female (odds ratio [OR]: 2.86; 95% CI: 1.94-4.22), being <30 years of age (OR: 4.66; 95% CI: 2.78-7.81), being overweight (BMI 25-25.9; OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.20-0.76), being obese (BMI: 30; OR: 3.53; 95% CI: 1.51-8.22), having a diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mmHg (OR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.35-0.71), and having detectable HIV-1 RNA ≥20 copies/mL (OR: 1.85; 95% CI: 1.13-3.03). In conclusion, the prevalence of PAD in HIV-infected Thais was 4.37% in infected patients on therapy attending outpatient clinics. We assessed the correlation between the biomarkers of lower limb atherosclerosis (eg, ankle-brachial index [ABI]) and of carotid atherosclerosis (eg, common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and presence of atherosclerotic plaque) in a population-based cohort from Girona (Northwest Spain) recruited in 2010. Ankle-brachial index and carotid ultrasound were performed in all participants. Generalized additive multivariable models were used to adjust a regression model of common carotid IMT on ABI. Logistic regression multivariable models were adjusted to assess the probability of carotid plaque in individuals with peripheral artery disease. We included 3307 individuals (54.2% women), mean age 60 years (standard deviation 11). Two patterns of association were observed between subclinical biomarkers of atherosclerosis at the lower limb and carotid artery. Ankle-brachial index and common carotid IMT showed a linear trend in men [beta coefficient (95% confidence interval) =-.068 (−.123; −.012); P =.016]. Women with peripheral artery disease presented with high risk of atherosclerotic plaque at the carotid artery [Odds ratio (95% confidence interval) = 2.61, (1.46; 4.69); P =.001]. Background: Ankle-brachial index (ABI), an indicator of atherosclerosis or arterial stiffness, has been associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and related cognitive impairment. Nevertheless, only limited information is available regarding its contribution to brain alterations leading to cognitive decline in late-life. Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship of ABI with in vivo AD pathologies and cerebrovascular injury in cognitively impaired older adults. Methods: Total 127 cognitively impaired (70 mild cognitive impairment and 57 AD dementia) individuals, who participated in an ongoing prospective cohort study, were included. All participants underwent comprehensive clinical and neuropsychological assessment, ABI measurement, apolipoprotein E (APOE) ɛ4 genotyping, and multi-modal brain imaging including [11C] Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB)-positron emission tomography (PET) and [18F] fludeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET, and MRI. Results: General linear model analysis showed significant relationship between ABI strata (low ABI: <1.00, normal ABI: 1.00–1.29, and high ABI: ≥1.30) and AD-signature region cerebral glucose metabolism (AD-CM), even after controlling age, sex, clinical dementia rating–sum of box, and APOE ɛ4 positivity (p = 0.029). Post hoc comparison revealed that low ABI had significantly lower AD-CM than middle and high ABI, while no difference of AD-CM was found between middle and high ABI. There was no significant difference of global Aβ deposition, AD-signature region cortical thickness, and white matter hyperintensity volume between the three ABI strata. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that lower ABI, likely related to atherosclerosis, may contribute to the aggravation of AD-related regional neurodegeneration in cognitively impaired older adults. (1) Background: The study investigated whether the ankle–brachial index (ABI) and pulse wave velocity (baPWV) could reflect the severity of small vessel disease (SVD) and large artery atherosclerosis (LAA). (2) Methods: A total of 956 consecutive patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke were prospectively enrolled from July 2016 to December 2017. SVD severity and LAA stenosis grades were evaluated via magnetic resonance imaging and carotid duplex ultrasonography. Correlation coefficients were calculated between the ABI/baPWV and measurement values. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictive potential. (3) Results: Among the 820 patients included in the final analysis, the stenosis grade of extracranial and intracranial vessels was inversely correlated with the ABI (p < 0.001, respectively) and positively correlated with the baPWV (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively). Abnormal ABI, not baPWV, independently predicted the presence of moderate (adjusted odds ratio, aOR: 2.18, 95% CI: 1.31–3.63) to severe (aOR: 5.59, 95% CI: 2.21–14.13) extracranial vessel stenosis and intracranial vessel stenosis (aOR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.15–3.11). Neither the ABI nor baPWV was independently associated with SVD severity. (4) Conclusions: ABI is better than baPWV in screening for and identifying the existence of cerebral large vessel disease, but neither test is a good predictor of cerebral SVD severity. Objectives: This thesis aims to explore the relationship between tea consumption and ankle-brachial index (ABI) and further studies the relationship between tea consumption and lower extremity atherosclerosis. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, epidemiological survey of 17,373 subjects selected from the staff of Kailuan Group who had come to Kailuan General Hospital for a health examination from January 2016 to December 2017. Tea consumption was obtained by questionnaires. ABI was measured using an automated analyzer. The other data, such as age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and so on, was collected on the same day of the health examination results. The relationship between tea drinking habits and ABI was studied using logistic regression and multivariate linear regression analysis. Results: Among the 17,373 analyzed subjects, the difference in age, gender, BMI, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), uric acid (UA), C-reactive protein (CRP), fasting blood-glucose (Fbg), and ABI was statistically significant in the tea-drinking group and the nontea-drinking group (p < 0.05). Multiple logistic regression models revealed that tea consumption was a positive predictor for ABI (odds ratio (OR) = 0.782, confidence interval (CI), 0.615-0.994) (p < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis of the ABI value showed that frequent teadrinking has a positive correlation with the ABI value (p < 0.05). Background: There is a high incidence of peripheral vascular occlusive disease (PVOD) in patients with diabetes and this can result in poor outcomes of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) and wound healing. Objectives: To compare wound healing in DFU patients with and without PVOD and evaluate differences in wound healing with age and other factors. Methods: This prospective study enrolled 40 patients with grade 3 (based on Wagner classification) diabetic foot ulcers. Patients with a history of amputation, grade 4 and above ulcers were excluded from the study. based on ankle-brachial index (ABI) values, they were divided into two groups, with and without PVOD. After mapping the initial wound surface area on a graph sheet, wounds were debrided, treated with debriding agents and wound dressing done. All patients were followed once a month for 3 months, each time mapping the progress of wound surface area. Results: Mean age of patients was 64.05 +/-8.56 (SD). The mean ABI of patients with PVOD was 0.67, while that without PVOD was 1.12 (p<0.001). There was no difference in the rate of wound healing between the two groups (p=0.3487) and with standard care both sets of patients healed well. In young patients referred for exercise-induced pain in the legs, false positive tests are a potential problem for the post-exercise ankle–brachial index (ABI) test when using the current American Heart Association guidelines for diagnosing peripheral artery disease (PAD). The present study aimed to investigate post-exercise ABI in healthy young people, and to explore whether the current diagnostic criteria for pathological ABI should be revised. Forty-eight volunteers (18–30 years) were included. Resting examinations included ABI and ultrasound of the external iliac artery. Post-exercise examinations after a treadmill load included ABI and ultrasound of the external iliac artery; after 0 min and after 3 min. A total of 60.5% of the participants had a post-exercise decrease in ABI > 20%. A total of 6.5% showed a decrease in ankle systolic blood pressure >30 mmHg. No significant association was observed between a change in blood flow in the external iliac artery and a reduction in ABI post-exercise. Analyses of the ultrasound recordings showed no turbulence in the external iliac artery. According to the results, a 20% decrease in ABI post-exercise seems to be a physiological condition present in young people. We support the need for a reassessment of the criteria for diagnosing PAD. Background: The associations between obesity and abnormalities of upper and lower extremity arteries remain to be elucidated. This study is aimed to investigate whether general obesity and abdominal obesity are associated with upper and lower extremity artery diseases in a Chinese community population. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 13,144 participants in a Chinese community population. The associations between obesity parameters and abnormalities of upper and lower extremity arteries were evaluated. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independence of associations between obesity indicators and abnormalities of peripheral arteries. Nonlinear relationship between body mass index (BMI) and risk of ankle-brachial index (ABI) ≤ 0.9 was evaluated using a restricted cubic spline model. Results: The prevalence of ABI ≤ 0.9 and interarm blood pressure difference (IABPD) ≥ 15 mmHg in the subjects was 1.9% and 1.4% respectively. Waist circumference (WC) was independently associated with ABI ≤ 0.9 (OR 1.014, 95% CI 1.002–1.026, P = 0.017). Nevertheless, BMI was not independently associated with ABI ≤ 0.9 using linear statistical models. Meanwhile, BMI and WC were independently associated with IABPD ≥ 15 mmHg respectively (OR 1.139, 95% CI 1.100–1.181, P < 0.001, and OR 1.058, 95% CI 1.044–1.072, P < 0.001). Furthermore, prevalence of ABI ≤ 0.9 was displayed with a U-shaped pattern according to different BMI (< 20, 20 to < 25, 25 to < 30, and ≥ 30). Compared with BMI 20 to < 25, risk of ABI ≤ 0.9 was significantly increased when BMI < 20 or ≥ 30 respectively (OR 2.595, 95% CI 1.745–3.858, P < 0.001, or OR 1.618, 95% CI 1.087–2.410, P = 0.018). Restricted cubic spline analysis indicated a significant U-shaped relationship between BMI and risk of ABI ≤ 0.9 (P for non-linearity < 0.001). However, prevalence of IABPD ≥ 15 mmHg was significantly increased with incremental BMI (P for trend < 0.001). Compared with BMI 20 to < 25, the risk of IABPD ≥ 15 mmHg was significantly increased when BMI ≥ 30 (OR 3.218, 95% CI 2.133–4.855, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for upper and lower extremity artery diseases. Meanwhile, general obesity is also independently associated with upper extremity artery disease. Background: Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce cardiovascular morbidity and delay the progression of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the mechanisms underpinning these benefits are not entirely clear. More specifically, it is uncertain whether these agents exert cardiorenal protective effects through a direct action on the vascular wall. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on markers of subclinical vascular damage. Methods: In total, 40 adult patients with T2DM and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and age- and gender-matched patients with T2DM and GFR > 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were consecutively enrolled. Indices of arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity, augmentation index (AIx), AIx adjusted to a heart rate of 75 beats/min (Alx@75) and central systolic, diastolic, pulse and mean pressure), carotid atherosclerosis (stenosis, intima-media thickness (cIMT) and maximal plaque thickness) and peripheral arterial disease (ankle brachial index (ABI)) were determined. The chi-squared and Mann–Whitney U-test were used to detect differences in categorical and continuous variables between groups, respectively. Results: In total, 15 patients were treated with SGLT2 inhibitors and 25 patients were not receiving these agents. Serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower in the former whereas other cardiovascular risk factors, the prevalence of established cardiovascular disease, anthropometric and demographic characteristics, and vital signs did not differ between the 2 groups. The AIx was lower in patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors (21.9 ± 11.3 vs. 29.7 ± 12% in patients not treated with SGLT2 inhibitors; p < 0.05). The AIx@75 was also lower in the former (21.3 ± 10.9 and 32.6 ± 11.3%, respectively, p < 0.005). Other markers of arterial stiffness were similar in the 2 groups. In addition, markers of carotid atherosclerosis and the ABI did not differ between patients treated and not treated with SGLT2 inhibitors. Conclusions: Treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors appears to reduce arterial stiffness. Accordingly, these agents might improve cardiovascular outcomes not only in patients with T2DM and established cardiorenal disease but also in lower-risk patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: As the number of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease continues to increase, it is increasingly important to understand the impact of cardiovascular risk on the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which can provide guidance for clinical medication and recommendations for patient care and rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cardiovascular risk and the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: Selected COPD patients admitted to hospital from June 2018 to July 2020 were included in the study for prospective analysis, and patients who showed more than two instances of moderate deterioration or severe deterioration within one year before the consultation were defined as COPD patients, and all participants underwent relevant tests and assessments. Results: Multivariate correction analysis showed that a worsening phenotype improved the risk of carotid artery intima-media thickness exceeding 75% by nearly three times, and it had no relation with the degree of COPD severity and global cardiovascular risk; in addition, the relationship between a worsening phenotype and high carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) was more pronounced in patients under 65 years of age. Conclusions: The existence of subclinical atherosclerosis is individually related to the worsening phenotype, and the difference is more obvious in young patients.
