This paper analyses different modes and cycles of seat vibration in city buses by analysing acceleration peak magnitudes and their trends and fluctuations in the time domain. The purpose is to find peak vibration modes that exist in the driving patterns of city buses. Analysing peaks in a time series is essential for many applications specifically in vibration analysis because they represent significant events. Using a 6-axis inertial measurement unit device which has accelerometer and gyroscope sensors data were collected from a number of city buses operating. By applying algorithmic filters the g-force peaks present in different acceleration modes were analysed. The particularity of city bus seat vibration and g-force acceleration levels due to effective acceleration in 3-axes are presented and discussed, namely: longitudinal (forward motion), lateral (side-to-side) and vertical (bounce mode) accelerations. It was found that the bus seat root mean square acceleration magnitude of approximately 0.33 g occurred from the major acceleration cycles during bus running. In longitudinal, lateral and vertical directions, 20% of peak acceleration cycles were above 0.20 g, 0.18 g and 0.27 g respectively. Jerk may be a better indicator of passenger discomfort. The results from this study can provide future reference to research directions into understanding city bus seat vibration levels in longitudinal, lateral and vertical directions and also initiatives to mitigate excess bus seat vibration for the riders. Oiling‐out is a common phenomenon in industrial crystallization processes that not only prolongs the total operating time but also leads to undesirable crystal morphology, making it challenging to control crystallization paths. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the oiling‐out phenomenon in organic small molecule crystallization. First, the formation mechanisms of oiling‐out are summarized from both thermodynamic and dynamic perspectives, providing the theoretical foundation for understanding the phenomenon. Then, the universal characterization methods for studying the oiling‐out phenomenon of organic small molecules are introduced in detail, covering both offline and online analytical tools. Moreover, the regulation strategy for oiling‐out, including solvents, impurities, seeding, temperature, and mixing methods are discussed. This paper also focuses on the application of oiling‐out in co‐assembly and crystal shape modulation. Finally, future opportunities and challenges are presented to address the current shortcomings and application bottlenecks in the study of organic small molecule oiling‐out phenomena. This review aims to provide valuable insights and guidance for researchers working on the crystallization of organic small molecules, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, to better understand, control, and utilize the oiling‐out phenomenon. An optimal shift control strategy for electric vehicles with the two-speed dual-clutch transmission is proposed to reduce the vehicle jerk and friction work during gear shift. The dynamic model of the powertrain considering the stick–slip friction of clutch is built. The developed control scheme is divided into two stages. For the upper level control, a finite-time linear quadratic regulator (LQR) is designed to optimize the target trajectories of torque and speed of motor and clutch by integrating both jerk and friction work in the cost function. Considering that the clutch torque is necessary for calculating the target trajectories but cannot be measured directly, the Kalman filter is employed to estimate the clutch torque. For the lower level control, a combination of torque feedforward and speed feedback controller is constructed to control the motor torque and clutch pressure. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, comparisons with the strategies based on the polynomial method and unsmooth LQR are carried out. This paper investigates the application of contusion stability yaw control of a lightweight solar-electric vehicle. The vehicle's customized design envelope makes it more sensitive to variations in load due to its low weight and relatively large size. To address this issue, control strategies were developed using differential motor torques to generate direct yaw moments using the vehicle's rear in-wheel motors. This paper introduces the working conditions of solar vehicles and demonstrates the necessity of stability control. Vehicle parameters such as mass and center of gravity position are obtained to apply control to the real vehicle. The paper then describes two stability control strategies, using (i) sliding-mode control (SMC) and (ii) model predictive control (MPC). To account for the road bank angle of the test area and the impact of additional weight from a driver and passenger, a Kinematic-Based Observer is designed to estimate the vehicle's side-slip based on measured values. To collect real-time data, a dSPACE MicroAutobox was installed on the solar vehicle. The results show the effect of the observer and controllers under different vehicle speeds and load conditions. Purpose: This study was to explore the environmental driving factors and the assembly mechanisms of aerobic denitrifying bacteria community with different seasons and rarity in the sediments of Baiyangdian Lake. Materials and methods: Sediment samples were collected from 16 locations in Baiyangdian Lake. Microbial community composition and diversity were measured by napA gene sequencing. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Mantel analysis were used to study the environmental factors that drive subcommunities with different rarity in summer and winter. Based on network analysis, the symbiotic relationship of subcommunities with different rarity in summer and winter was discussed. The assembly mechanism of subcommunities with different rarity in summer and winter was investigated by null model analysis. The influence factor of different rarity subcommunity diversity in summer and winter was studied based on structural equation modeling (SEM). Results and discussion: We found that the α-diversity of winter was higher than that of summer, and the α-diversity of rare taxa (RT) was higher than that of abundant taxa (AT). Nitrate (NO3−-N) was the most critical factor affecting AT in two seasons; temperature (T) and CODMn were the most critical environmental factors affecting RT in summer and winter, respectively. All taxa were significantly affected by dissolved oxygen (DO) in winter. The network analysis showed that symbiotic relationships were dominant among species, and the interrelationship between groups was closer in winter. RT was more crucial for preserving the stability of the bacterial community's overall composition and structure, but AT had stronger environmental adaptability. The null model revealed that dispersal limitation predominated in the community assembly of AT and RT. With the increase of rarity, the contribution of undominated and homogeneous dispersal to microbial subcommunity aggregation increases. The SEM revealed a significant detrimental impact of NO3−-N and NO2−-N on β-diversity of AT and RT in summer (P = 0.009, n = 16 and P = 0.002, n = 16) but promoted β-diversity of AT and RT in winter. CODMn, Mn, pH, and DO had the greatest influence on β-diversity of AT and RT in winter. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study enhances the understanding of aerobic denitrifying bacterial community diversity, assemblage patterns, and environmental driving mechanisms, and provides important implications for microbial ecology. Moreover, these results provide strategies for the subsequent screening of aerobic denitrifying bacteria in natural water, which is of great significance for the realization of in situ nitrogen removal in natural water. Microbially mediated carbon cycling is essential for the production of refractory dissolved organic carbon and subsequent formation of stable carbon sinks at the sediment–water interface (SWI) in aquatic ecosystems, such as lakes. It remains unclear how this process is influenced by hydrostatic pressure changes due to water level fluctuation in deep-water reservoirs. Here, a microcosm simulation experiment was carried out to decipher the response of microbially mediated carbon cycling to various hydrostatic pressures (i.e., 0.1 MPa [atmospheric pressure], 0.2 MPa, 0.5 MPa, 0.7 MPa) at the SWI in Jinpen Reservoir, Shaanxi Province, China. The response mechanisms of microbial community structure, functional gene abundance, and metabolic pathway activity associated with carbon cycling were explored by metagenomics and metabolomics. Results showed that the number of microbial species in sediment samples increased with elevating pressure. The relative abundance of archaea also increased from 0.2% to 0.4% as a consequence of pressure elevation, accompanied by 0.17% and 0.03% decrease in bacteria and fungi, respectively. In contrast with low pressures, high pressures allowed the microbial communities to form a more closely connected network, which maintained more complex interspecies interactions and greater system stability. High pressures additionally improved the abundances of specific functional genes (e.g., ALDO, ACO, sdhA, and sdhC) in carbon metabolic pathways, promoted carbon fixation by the reductive pentose phosphate (Calvin) and citrate cycles, and hindered methanogenesis. Piezophilic taxa (e.g., Gammaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes) and genes (e.g., ompH, asd) were identified among carbon cycling-associated microbial communities. The piezophilic genes, which were mainly present in the Proteobacteria phylum, increased first and then decreased in abundance with elevating pressure. The findings indicate that elevated hydrostatic pressure contributes to carbon sequestration at the SWI in deep-water reservoirs by changing carbon cycling-associated microbial species, as well as relevant functional genes and metabolic pathways. The development of efficient and earth-abundant catalysts for hydrazine oxidation (HzOR) is of great significance for direct hydrazine fuel cell. In the present study, we report Co0.85Se/rGO electrocatalyst with nanoporous structure on rGO surface via electrodeposition. In comparison with Co0.85Se and nickel foam, Co0.85Se/rGO exhibits good hydrazine oxidation performance. A large current density of 981 mA cm−2 at 0.6 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, a low Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec−1, almost 100% selectivity toward the complete hydrazine oxidation, and a high retention rate of 92.5% at a large current density of 50 mA cm−2 during 24 h measurement can be observed, which is among the best values for Co-based HzOR catalysts that recently reported. Furthermore, the enhanced electrochemical mechanism of Co0.85Se/rGO toward HzOR was investigated, mainly contributed to its well-maintained nanoporous structure, larger electrochemically active surface area, high electrical conductivity, and superaerophobic nature of nanoporous surface. This paper investigates the impact of tyre dynamics on autonomous vehicle dynamic control. The commonly used 2 degrees of freedom bicycle model and a detailed vehicle model considering tyre dynamics are built, respectively, to describe the vehicle dynamics. The two models are firstly compared with the response to front wheel steering input and differential motor torque input. The transient vehicle body vibrations are clearly demonstrated by the detailed model but overlooked by the bicycle model. The influence of tyre nonlinearity on path offset is also revealed. Then, the path following control strategy is designed based on the linear quadratic regulator control to compare the two models from the path following performance perspective. The double lane change simulation is conducted. The results show that at low vehicle speed, the path following errors of two models are very close, which proves the rationality of using the bicycle model to represent the vehicle dynamics in mild and moderate driving conditions. However, when the path following is conducted with high vehicle speed, the required lateral tyre force is large, so the tyres work with large slip angles and the tyre nonlinearity generates significant deviation on the path following errors between the two models. In this study, the flower-shaped Bi2S3/g-C3N4-2.6 heterojunction obtained by solvothermal method and its photocatalytic degradation efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solution within 40 min is as high as 98.8% and 94.6%. For RhB degradation, the photocatalytic reaction rate constant (k) of Bi2S3/g-C3N4-2.6 is approximately 1.8 and 45.5 times that of Bi2S3 and g-C3N4. For TC, k is 3.1 and 2.4 times that of Bi2S3 and g-C3N4, respectively. The key to determining the high catalytic activity of Bi2S3/g-C3N4 lies in the formation of a good heterojunction between Bi2S3 and g-C3N4, which accelerates the electron transfer rate between the heterojunction interface and effectively avoids electron–hole recombination. The effects of catalyst dosage, different pH values, inorganic anions, and capture agents on the photodegradation performance of RhB were investigated. The results show that the catalyst dosage is 1.33 g/L, and the solution pH is in the range of 5–9, which has the best removal effect on pollutants, and the isolation of holes (h+) with strong oxidizing ability promotes the collapse of pollutant molecules. The term knuckleball in sporting jargon is used to describe a ball that has been launched with minimal spin, resulting in a trajectory that is erratic and unpredictable. This phenomenon was first observed in baseball (where the term originated) and has since been observed in other sports. While knuckleball has long fascinated the scientific community, the bulk of research has primarily focused on knuckleball as it occurs in baseball. Following the changes in the design of the soccer ball after the 2006 World Cup, knuckleball and ball aerodynamics were exploited by soccer players. This research examined the properties of a knuckleball in the sport of soccer. We designed and evaluated a system that could reproduce the knuckleball effect on soccer balls based on previous theories and characteristics outlined in our literature review. Our system is comprised of the Adidas miCoach Smart Ball, a companion smart phone app for data collection, a ball-launching machine with programmable functions, and a video-based tracking system and Tracker motion analysis software. The results from the testing showed that our system was successfully able to produce knuckleball behaviour on the football in a highly consistent manner. This verified the dynamic models of knuckleball that we outline. While a small portion of the data showed some lateral deviations (zig-zag trajectory), this erratic and unpredictable trajectory was much smaller in magnitude when compared to examples seen in professional games. The sensor data from the miCoach app and trajectory data from the Tracker motion analysis software, showed that the knuckleballs were consistently reproduced in-line with theoretical dynamics. Double bounce is an unusual and potentially very hazardous phenomenon that most trampoline users may have experienced, yet few would have really understood how and why it occurs. This paper provides an in-depth investigation into the double bounce. Firstly, the static and dynamic characteristics of a recreational trampoline are analysed theoretically and verified through experiments. Then, based on the developed trampoline dynamic model, double bounce simulation is conducted with two medicine balls released with different time delays. Through simulation, the process of double bounce is presented in detail, which comprehensively reveals how energy is transferred between users during double bounce. Furthermore, the effect of release time delay on double bounce is also presented. Finally, we conducted an experiment which produced similar results to the simulation and validated the reliability of the trampoline dynamic model and double bounce theoretical analysis. Large variations load-to-curb weight ratios are linked to significant changes in parameters critical to control design for vehicle stability control system. Unique and highly customised vehicles, such as the lightweight solar car in this paper, are more susceptible to the impact of such variations when developing control methods. The purpose of this study is to study the influence of variation in loading conditions, the effect of ignoring changes in inertial parameters, and develop and compare a number of alternative vehicle stability control methods that can be applied to rear-wheel driven vehicles via in-wheel motors. In this paper a Sliding Mode Control (SMC) both nominal and when including uncertainty, Dynamic Curvature Control (DCC) and a Proportional–Integral Control (PI) strategies are compared to the baseline open-loop control case. Each controller is implemented through co-simulation via MATLAB® Simulink® and Siemens Amesim™ using a 15-DOF non-linear vehicle model. The results show that SMC achieves the best performance, whilst DCC tends to overshoot target conditions prior to settling, indicating that SMC is the preferred control strategy. In rec ent years, Sb-based composites, as a kind of electrode alloy mechanism, have attracted more and more researchers' attention owing to high theoretical specific capacity and reliable safety performance. However, the volume expansion of Sb-based electrode materials during charge/discharge in the process of (de)lithium leading to unstable cycling performance severely limits the progress of Sb-based electrode materials as electrode materials for commercialization. Therefore, we prepared N-doped 3D porous carbon to wrap Sb-Mo nanoparticles in a comprehensible way. By this method, the volume expansion problem of Sb-Mo nanoparticles during the (de)lithiation process can be effectively prevented, and the rate of capacity decay can be effectively mitigated. The obtained Sb-Mo@3DNC samples displayed superior electrochemical performance, especially that the Sb-Mo@3DNC700 exhibits more outstanding rate stability and long cycle performance than Sb-Mo@3DNC-600 and Sb-Mo@3DNC-800. It is worth that the Sb-Mo@3DNC-700 still possesses the reversible capacity of 352.5 mA h g−1 at the current density of 5 A g−1 and maintains the reversible capacity of 661.7 mA h g−1 after 1200 cycles at the current density of 1 A g−1. Parallel hydraulic hybrid vehicles (PHHVs) integrate conventional engines with a hydraulic pump/motor (HPM) to drive the vehicle independently or in combination. To improve the comfortability and drivability during mode switching from hydraulic driving mode to engine driving mode, this paper proposes a coordinated control strategy for the engine, clutch and HPM. To capture the transient behaviour of the powertrain, a medium-duty PHHV dynamic model is established. Based on a typical PHHV powertrain layout, the mode switching process is analysed and divided into five phases. Control strategies are designed for each phase, respectively.LQR-based closed-loop control strategy is adopted to analyse the effect of clutch engaging speed on vehicle jerk, clutch frictional work and energy consumption. HPM output torque is adjusted to compensate the engine clutch drag torque, with the aim maintaining good drivability. To do this, constant vehicle acceleration is selected as the indicator of stable output torque. The simulation results demonstrate that by using the HPM to compensate the engine clutch drag torque, vehicle drivability is guaranteed during mode switching. We have developed a Poisson random field model for estimating the distribution of selective effects of newly arisen nonsynonymous mutations that could be observed as polymorphism or divergence in samples of two related species under the assumption that the two species populations are not at mutation-selection-drift equilibrium. The model is applied to 91Drosophila genes by comparing levels of polymorphism in an African population of D. melanogaster with divergence to a reference strain of D. simulans. Based on the difference of gene expression level between testes and ovaries, the 91 genes were classified as 33 male-biased, 28 female-biased, and 30 sex-unbiased genes. Under a Bayesian framework, Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations are implemented to the model in which the distribution of selective effects is assumed to be Gaussian with a mean that may differ from one gene to the other to sample key parameters. Based on our estimates, the majority of newly-arisen nonsynonymous mutations that could contribute to polymorphism or divergence in Drosophila species are mildly deleterious with a mean scaled selection coefficient of -2.81, while almost 86% of the fixed differences between species are driven by positive selection. There are only 16.6% of the nonsynonymous mutations observed in sex-unbiased genes that are under positive selection in comparison to 30% of male-biased and 46% of female-biased genes that are beneficial. Maluan Bay, characterized by various degrees of anthropogenic contamination, is considered as one of the most industrialized and urbanized coastal lagoon in China, where large amounts of metal contaminants in surface water and biota were detected in previous studies. However, no clear discriminating power among sampling sites could be made only through comparisons between contaminant levels and Environmental Quality Standards and especially biological-based monitoring integrating biomarkers and bioaccumulation of exposure are scarce. For this purpose, antioxidants enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) and glutathione- S-transferase were assessed using the hepatopancreas of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei after 7 days laboratory exposure under controlled conditions to characterize the effects of polluted waters to shrimps. The metal concentrations of sampled water and bioaccumulation in hepatopancreatic tissues were also analyzed, and data were linked to biomarkers' responses by multivariate (principal component analysis-factor) analysis. A representation of estimated factor scores was performed to confirm the factor descriptions classifying the pollution status and characterizing the studied sites, which pointed out the impact of multiple sources of contaminants to the water quality and provided further evidences to the existence of clear pollution and toxicological gradients in critical areas. The results of the present investigation underlined that the integrated approach could be a powerful tool for the identification of causal toxic contaminants in complex mixtures and the assessment of human-induced environmental quality of the system in coastal zones. This study investigates and compares the acoustic signatures of a traditional wire-cable-pulled lure system and two alternative battery-operated lure systems jointly developed by Covey Associates Pty. Ltd. and Steriline Pty. Ltd. to eliminate the hazardous steel-wire cable and make the sport of greyhound racing safer for greyhounds, participants and spectators. The acoustical measurements of these three lure systems were conducted at the Murray Bridge greyhound racing track. The lure sounds were measured by the high-frequency Brüel & Kjær (B&K) Type 4191 microphones for the 395 m and 455 m starts at two positions: within the starting box and on the track adjacent to the starting boxes. The measurements capture the sounds that the greyhounds hear before and after the opening of the starting box gate. The frequency-domain analysis and sound quality analysis were conducted to compare the lure sounds. It was found when the battery-lure was installed with all nylon rollers, it presented less sound energy and lower frequency than the traditional wire-cable-pulled lure. When two of the nylon rollers were replaced with steel rollers, the battery-operated lure emitted a louder and higher frequency sound than the traditional wire-cable-pulled lure. The different acoustic characteristics of these lure systems suggest future research is warranted on the reaction of greyhounds to different lure sounds, particularly their excitement level within the starting box as the lure approaches. This initial research also suggests some greyhounds may not clearly hear the battery-operated lure with all nylon rollers approaching the starting boxes and the timing of these greyhounds to jump may be delayed, particularly during high wind conditions. This study illustrates the application of a tri-axial accelerometer and gyroscope sensor device on a trampolinist performing the walking-the-wall manoeuvre on a high-performance trampoline to determine the performer dynamic conditions. This research found that rigid vertical walls would allow the trampolinist to obtain greater control and retain spatial awareness at greater levels than what is achievable on non-rigid vertical walls. With a non-rigid padded wall, the reaction force from the wall can be considered a variable force that is not constrained, and would not always provide the feedback that the trampolinist needs to maintain the balance with each climb up the wall and fall from height. This research postulates that unattenuated vertical walls are safer than attenuated vertical walls for walking-the-wall manoeuvres within trampoline park facilities. This is because non-rigid walls would provide higher g-force reaction feedback from the wall, which would reduce the trampolinist's control and stability. This was verified by measuring g-force on a horizontal rigid surface versus a non-rigid surface, where the g-force feedback was 27% higher for the non-rigid surface. Control and stability are both critical while performing the complex walking-the-wall manoeuvre. The trampolinist experienced a very high peak g-force, with a maximum g-force of approximately 11.5 g at the bottom of the jump cycle. It was concluded that applying impact attenuation padding to vertical walls used for walking-the-wall and similar activities would increase the likelihood of injury; therefore, padding of these vertical surfaces is not recommended. This paper compares the energy economy and vertical vibration characteristics of in-wheel drive electric vehicles (IEVs), in-wheel drive electric hydraulic hybrid vehicles (IHVs) and centralized drive electric vehicles (CEVs). The dynamic programming (DP) algorithm is used to explore the optimal energy consumption of each vehicle. The energy economy analysis shows that the IEV consumes more energy than the CEV due to its relatively lower electric motor efficiency, even with fewer driveline components. The IHV consumes much more energy than the IEV and CEV because of the energy loss in the hydraulic driveline. The vertical vibration analysis demonstrates that both IEV and IHV degrade the vehicle driving comfort due to increased unsprung mass. Taking the advantage of high power density of the hydraulic motor, IHV have less unsprung mass when compared with the IEV, which helps to mitigate the vibration problems caused by increased unsprung mass. The relationship between CDOM (Chromophoric dissolved organic matter) and the bacterial community was investigated in ice-covered Baiyangdian Lake. The results showed that environmental parameters significantly differed in Baiyangdian Lake, whereas a-diversity was not significantly different. Moreover, the microbial and functional communities exhibited significant differences, and T (Temperature), pH, ORP (Oxidation-reduction potential), DO (Dissolved oxygen), NO3−-N, NH4+-N, and Mn (Manganese) were the main environmental factors of these differences, based on redundancy analysis and the Mantel test. Biomarkers of the microbial and functional communities were investigated through linear discriminant analysis effect size and STAMP analysis. The number of biomarkers in the natural area was highest among the typical zones, and most top functions were related to carbohydrate metabolism. Two protein-like components (C1 and C2) and one humic-like component (C3) were identified by parallel factor analysis, and C1 was positively related to C2 (R = 0.99, p < 0.001), indicating the same sources. Moreover, CDOM significantly differed among the typical zones (p < 0.001). The high biological index, fluorescence index, β:α, and low humification index indicated a strong autochthonous component and aquatic bacterial origin, which was consistent with the results of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Network analysis revealed non-random co-occurrence patterns. The bacterial and functional communities interacted closely with CDOM. The dominant genera were CL500-29_marine_group, Flavobacterium, Limnohabitans, and Candidatus_Aquirestis. Random forest analysis showed that C1, C2, and C3 are important predictors of α- and β-diversity in the water bacterial community and its functional composition. Here, the ion-exchangeable form of nitrogen (IEF-N), weak-acid extractable form of nitrogen (WAEF-N), strong-alkali extractable form of nitrogen (SAEF-N), strong-oxidant extractable form of nitrogen (SOEF-N), residue nitrogen (Res-N), and total nitrogen (TN) showed spatial differences, and most of the sediment nitrogen fractions exhibited positive correlations in Baiyangdian Lake. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the aerobic denitrification microbial community was composed of proteobacteria (42.04%–99.08%) and unclassified_bacteria (0.92%–57.92%). Moreover, the microbial community exhibited significant differences (R2 = 0.4422, P < 0.05) on the basis of the adonis analysis. T(temperature), Moisture content (MC), sediment total phosphorus (STP), ion-exchangeable form of ammonia (IEF-NH4+-N), weak-acid extractable form of ammonia (WAEF-NH4+-N), weak-acid extractable form of nitrate (WAEF-NO3−-N), and strong-alkali extractable form of ammonia (SAEF-NH4+-N) were the dominant environmental factors and explained 11.1%, 8.2%, 10.7%, 6.9%, 9.3%, 8.1%, 10.5%, 7.5%, and 7% variation, respectively, of the total variation in the microbial community. Furthermore, the network analysis showed that symbiotic relationships accounted for a major percentage of the microbial networks. The keystone aerobic denitrifying bacteria belonged to Comamonas, Rhodobacter, Achromobacter, Aeromonas, Azoarcus, Leptothrix_Burkholderiales, Pseudomonas, Thauera, unclassified_Burkholderiales, and unclassified_bacteria. The composition of the keystone aerobic denitrifying microbial community also exhibited significant differences (R2 = 0.4534, P < 0.05) on the basis of the adonis analysis. T, STP, IEF-NH4+-N, ion-exchangeable form of nitrate (IEF-NO3−-N), WAEF-NO3−-N, SAEF-NH4+-N, and TN were the dominant environmental factors that explained 8.4%, 6.2%, 4.6%, 5.9%, 5.9%, 4.5%, and 9.4% variation, respectively, of the total variation in the keystone aerobic denitrifying microbial community. Aeration and mixing have been proven as effective in situ water quality improvement methods, particularly for deep drinking water reservoirs. While there is some research on the mechanism of water quality improvement during artificial mixing, the changes to water quality and the microbial community during the subsequent continuous mixing process is little understood. In this study, we investigate the mechanism of water quality improvement during the continuous mixing process in a drinking water reservoir. During this period, we found a reduction in total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and total organic carbon (TOC) of 12.5%–30.8%. We also measured reductions of 8.6% and 6.2% in TN and organic carbon (OC), respectively, in surface sediment. Microbial metabolic activity, abundance, and carbon source utilization were also improved. Redundancy analysis indicated that temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) were key factors affecting changes in the microbial community. With intervention, the water temperature during continuous mixing was 15 °C, and the mixing temperature in the reservoir increased by 5 °C compared with natural mixing. Our research shows that integrating and optimizing the artificial and continuous mixing processes influences energy savings. A field scale experiment was performed to explore the nitrogen removal performance of the water and surface sediment in a deep canyon-shaped drinking water reservoir by operating WLAs (water-lifting aerators). Nitrogen removal performance was achieved by increasing the densities and N-removal genes (nirK and nirS) of indigenous aerobic denitrifiers. After the operation of WLAs, the total nitrogen removal rate reached 29.1 ± 0.8% in the enhanced area. Ammonia and nitrate concentrations were reduced by 72.5 ± 2.5% and 40.5 ± 2.1%, respectively. No nitrite accumulation was observed. Biolog results showed improvement of carbon metabolism and carbon source utilization of microbes in the enhanced area. Miseq high-throughput sequencing indicated that the denitrifying bacteria percentage was also higher in the enhanced area than that in the control area. Microbial communities had changed between the enhanced and control areas. Thus, nitrogen removal through enhanced indigenous aerobic denitrifiers by the operation of WLAs was feasible and successful at the field scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
