The construction of photocatalytic systems that have strong redox capability, effective charge separation, and large reactive surfaces is of great scientific and practical interest. Herein, an edge‐connected 2D/2D Z‐scheme system that combines the facet junction and the interfacial heterojunction to achieve effective long‐range charge separation and large reactive surface exposure is designed and fabricated. The heterostructure is realized by the selective growth of 2D‐layered MoS2 nanoflakes on the edge‐sites of thin TiO2 nanosheets via an Au‐promoted photodeposition method. Attributed to the synergetic coupling of the facet junction and the interfacial heterojunction that assures the effective charge separation, and the tremendous but physically separated reactive sites offered by layered MoS2 and highly‐exposed (001) facets of TiO2, respectively, the artificial Z‐scheme exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance in photodegradation tests. Moreover, the junctional plasmonic Au nanoclusters not only act as electron traps to promote the edge‐selective synthesis but also generate "hot electrons" to further boost photocatalytic performance. The Z‐scheme charge‐flow direction in the heterostructure and the roles of electrons and holes are comprehensively studied using in situ irradiated X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photodegradation tests. Thrombin plays a central role in hemostasis and its imbalances in coagulation can lead to various pathologies. It is of clinical significance to develop a fast and accurate method for the quantitative detection of thrombin. Electrochemical aptasensors have the capability of combining the specific selectivity from aptamers with the extraordinary sensitivity from electrochemical techniques and thus have attracted considerable attention for the trace-level detection of thrombin. Nanomaterials and nanostructures can further enhance the performance of thrombin aptasensors to achieve high sensitivity, selectivity, and antifouling functions. In highlighting these material merits and their impacts on sensor performance, this paper reviews the most recent advances in label-free electrochemical aptasensors for thrombin detection, with an emphasis on nanomaterials and nanostructures utilized in sensor design and fabrication. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized between aligned carbon nanotube films (ACNTFs) using a cross-stacking method without any purification and functionalization processes. Direct electron transfer of GOx was achieved on the ACNTFs with reversible redox peaks observed at the formal potential of –0.448 V. When applied to the determination of glucose by cyclic voltammetry, the prepared enzymatic electrode exhibited a linear range from 1 to 5 mM under mediator-free physiological conditions, which makes it a promising candidate for the development of third-generation glucose biosensors. A new strategy was developed to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOx) between aligned carbon nanotube films, which achieved direct electron transfer of GOx for the electrocatalytic determination of glucose under mediator-free physiological conditions. ZIF-derived carbon structures are considered as desired electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their high surface area, high conductivity, and porous structure. However, the most reported ratio of 2-methylimidazole and Zn(II) is 4:1 to 20:1, which limits commercial applications due to the increasing cost. In this paper, a multirole Zn(II)-assisted method is presented from Zn(II) solution, ZnO, ZnO/ZIF-8 core-shell nanostructure, to 3D hierarchical micro-meso-macroporous carbon structures with a 1:1 ratio of 2-methylimidazole and Zn(II). The hierarchically porous carbon has a high surface area of 1800 m2 g−1 due to the synergistic effect of multirole Zn(II). The unique carbon-based half-cell delivers the specific capacitances of 377 and 221 F g−1 at the current densities of 1.0 and 50 A g−1, respectively. As a 2.5 V symmetrical supercapacitor, the device reveals a high double-layer capacitance of 24.4 F g−1, a power density of 62.5 kW kg−1, and more than 85.8% capacitance can be retained over 10000 cycles at 10 A g−1. A novel flexible nickel–cobalt layered double hydroxide/polyaniline/bacterial cellulose (NiCo-LDH/PANI/BC) electrode with both excellent electrochemical and mechanical performances is obtained through successively coating PANI and NiCo-LDH on BC. In addition to making the 3D open network (BC) conductive, the PANI layer also functions as a “nanoglue” to uniformly and robustly immobilize nanostructured NiCo-LDH onto the highly enlarged surface of PANI/BC nanofibers owing to its rough surface and hydrophilicity. Benefitting from the hierarchical structure with a 3D conductive network, unobstructed channels, numerous electroactive sites and induced synergistic effect, the NiCo-LDH/PANI/BC electrode shows excellent electrochemical performance in an aqueous electrolyte, exhibiting a high specific capacitance of 1690 F g−1 (761 C g−1) at 1 A g−1, enhanced rate capability (778 F g−1 or 350 C g−1 at 15 A g−1) and outstanding cycling stability (83.2% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Besides, the NiCo-LDH/PANI/BC also shows excellent foldability, high tensile strength (90.8 ± 4.9 MPa), high elongation at break (7.2 ± 0.7%) and outstanding electrochemical stability during bending and stretching. Moreover, a flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor is assembled with NiCo-LDH/PANI/BC as the positive electrode and N-doped carbonized BC/carbon cloth as the negative electrode, delivering a high energy density of 47.3 W h kg−1 at a power density of 828.9 W kg−1, and superior cycling stability (91.4% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles). Abstract: The increasing demand for wearable optoelectronics in biomedicine, prosthetics, and soft robotics calls for innovative and transformative technologies that permit facile fabrication of compact and flexible photodetectors with high performance. Herein, by developing a single‐step selective laser writing strategy that can finely tailor material properties through incident photon density control and lead to the formation of hierarchical hybrid nanocomposites, e.g., reduced graphene oxide (rGO)–zinc oxide (ZnO), a highly flexible and all rGO–ZnO hybrid‐based photodetector is successfully constructed. The device features 3D ultraporous hybrid films with high photoresponsivity as the active detection layer, and hybrid nanoflakes with superior electrical conductivity as interdigitated electrodes. Benefitting from enhanced photocarrier generation because of the ultraporous film morphology, efficient separation of electron–hole pairs at rGO–ZnO heterojunctions, and fast electron transport by highly conductive rGO nanosheets, the photodetector exhibits high, linear, and reproducible responsivities to a wide range of ultraviolet (UV) intensities. Furthermore, the excellent mechanical flexibility and robustness enable the photodetector to be conformally attached to skin, thus intimately monitoring the exposure dosage of human body to UV light for skin disease prevention. TiO2 is a promising photocatalytic material for hydrogen generation. However, the fast recombination of electron-holes restricts the photocatalytic performance of TiO2. Herein, this study demonstrates a 2D-layered carbon/TiO2 (C/TiO2) architecture via CO2 oxidation of 2D-Ti3C2, in which the 2D carbon layers provide electron transport channels and improve the hole-electron separation efficiency. Compared to Ti3C2 support, the thickness of derived carbon supports is significantly reduced, which enhances the light intensity arriving at the surface of TiO2. The oxidation parameters are investigated systematically. It is found that high temperature and high CO2 gas flux lead to the formation of crystal TiO2 and the oxidation of carbon layers. The bandgap of 2D-layered C/TiO2 samples is ranged from 2.83 to 2.89 eV. The 2D-layered C/TiO2 delivers enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with pure TiO2 catalysts. The optimal photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 2D-layered C/TiO2 is up to 24.04 µmol h−1, which is about 89 times higher than that of pure TiO2. Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers spun from vertically aligned CNT arrays hold great promise in promoting CNT's practical applications. Their production and properties strongly depend on the spinnability of the arrays. Herein, we study the influence of AlO buffer layer on catalyst morphology and the spinnability of CNT arrays. Long and vertically aligned CNT arrays have been obtained from a wide range of AlO buffer layer thickness, but the spinnable ones have only derived from a narrow range of the thickness. It is further found that the AlO buffer layer can regulate the size and size distribution of the catalyst particles through balancing surface diffusion and inter-layer diffusion. Small, dense, and uniform-distributed nanoparticles are fingerprinted as the optimal catalyst for growing long and spinnable CNT arrays and can be obtained at a proper thickness of buffer layer. By using a tailored tri-layered Fe/AlO/SiO catalyst, the obtained CNT arrays could reach a height of 500-800 µm and are highly spinnable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hierarchical all-carbon flexible electrodes based on natural fiber textiles have promising applications in flexible energy storage devices, due to their mechanical flexibility, large accessible surface area, and stable high-rate performance. Herein, a supercapacitor electrode based on carbonized natural flax fabric and in situ grown carbon nanotubes is developed. The carbonized flax fabric serves as 3D flexible scaffolds, carbon nanotubes uniformly grown on fabric surfaces provide a large accessible surface area with a tunable volume ratio between micropores and mesopores, and the in situ growth offers closely contacted interfaces. As a result, the optimal electrode exhibits a high surface area of 580 m2 g−1, an excellent specific capacitance of 191 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, a high cycling retention of 96% after 5000 cycles at 20 A g−1, and a high power density of 3.3 kW kg−1. The rapid development of wearable electronics needs flexible conductive materials that have stable electrical properties, good mechanical reliability, and broad environmental tolerance. Herein, ultralow-density all-carbon conductors that show excellent elasticity and high electrical stability when subjected to bending, stretching, and compression at high strains, which are superior to previously reported elastic conductors, are demonstrated. These all-carbon conductors are fabricated from carbon nanotube forms, with their nanotube joints being selectively welded by amorphous carbon. The joint-welded foams have a robust 3D nanotube network with fixed nodes and mobile nanotube segments, and thus have excellent electrical and mechanical stabilities. To bestow intelligent functions upon clothing textiles, wearable electronics must be able to accommodate complex deformations. Both stretchable and bendable building blocks have previously been demonstrated, but torsionable components are still lacking. Here we report a fiber-shaped flexible supercapacitor that is highly stable under torsional deformations, with a very small capacitance variation around its average value (＜±2%) even under severe twisting. The torsionable supercapacitor is fabricated from shearable carbon nanotube films. When such a film is integrated with an elastic fiber as an electrode, it is capable of withstanding torsion levels up to 20 000 rad m−1 with relatively stable conductivity. As a result, fiber-shaped supercapacitors fabricated from such torsionable electrodes can maintain an almost unchanged capacitance during twisting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advanced rechargeable lithium batteries are desired energy storage devices for electric vehicles. These batteries require their electrodes to have high electrical and thermal conductivity, an appropriate high specific surface area, an outstanding hierarchical architecture, high thermal and chemical stability and to be relatively low cost and environmentally benign. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene are two candidate materials that could meet these requirements, and thus have been widely studied. The present paper reviews the applications of CNTs and graphene in batteries, with an emphasis on the particular roles (such as conductive, active, flexible and supporting roles) they play in advanced lithium batteries. We will summarize the unique advantages of CNTs and graphene in battery applications, update the most recent progress, and compare the prospects and challenges of CNTs and graphene for future full utilization in energy storage applications. The effects and mechanisms of heteroatoms doping, the distribution of pore sizes, different architectures (anchored, sandwich-like and wrapped hybrid architecture) are discussed in detail. In the aim towards fulfilling the versatile applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in nanoelectronics, it is vital to control the alignment and orientation of ultralong and dense CNT arrays. Here, we have developed a subtle method to in situ improve the alignment of CNT arrays while maintaining their superior length and high density by introducing strong zipping and gas-guiding effects using trench structures on flat Si/SiO2 substrates. For CNTs suspended over the trenches, the zipping effect will induce strains into the nanotube body, and thus stretch the slack CNTs, resulting in the taut and straight morphology; for CNT segments sitting on substrate, the straightening is realized by promoting the gas-guiding effect through decelerating the “apparent” elongation rate of the growing CNTs. The improvement could always be observed no matter if the nanotube lies fully suspended across a trench, or is just partially suspended with its middle portion contacting the bottom of the trench. Based on the Raman characterization of individual CNTs and by taking the growth process into account, the improvement mechanism has been elaborately discussed. Charge separation in photosynthetic light reactions has gained much interest in an attempt to fabricate biological photovoltaic devices through integration of photosynthetic material and conducting electrodes. Direct interaction between thylakoids, as representatives of photosynthetic materials, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is expected to increase charge transfer. Thylakoids are isolated from spinach leaf chloroplasts and pristine MWCNTs are dispersed in Triton X-100 (TX-100) as a surfactant to retain their electronic properties through non-covalent interactions. The Raman and UV-Vis spectra suggest close interactions between the thylakoids and the MWCNTs. Stable thylakoids including the embedded protein subunits and light harvesting antennas can be detected from the non-shifted 680 nm absorbance peak. The 50% fluorescence quenching in the MWCNTs-thylakoids preparation as compared to thylakoids alone using single wavelength excitation suggests charge transfer between the thylakoids and the MWCNTs. For practical applications, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have to be assembled into macroscopic architectures, and CNT fiber presents itself as a promising candidate. We report on a carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber microelectrode coated with palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) and enabling electrochemical sensing of hydrogen peroxide (HO). The synergistic effects of the CNT fibers (good mechanical strength and large surface area) and of the PdNPs (high electrocatalytic activity) result in a microelectrode for HO that exhibits a 2-s response time, a detection limit as low as 2 μM, a sensitivity of 2.75 A cm M, and a linear response range from 2 μM to 1.3 mM (R = 0.9994). The sensor is also selective and not interfered by potentially competing species in biological fluids, thus representing an inexpensive but highly sensitive and selective microsensor for HO. A novel nonenzymatic glucose sensor was developed based on well-dispersed gold nanoparticles, which were in situ grown under direction of protein on a reduced graphene oxide modified electrode. This electrode exhibited high electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation without use of any enzyme or mediator. In application for the amperometric detection of glucose, a wide linear range of 0.02-16.6 mM, low detection limit of 5 µM and good selectivity were obtained. The attractive analytical performances of the proposed glucose sensor, coupled with the facile preparation method, provide a promising electrochemical platform for the development of effective nonenzymatic sensors. Polarization behaviors of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers with different twisting were reported. Scanning electron microscope and polarized Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the prepared samples. Results indicate that surface twisting angle affects greatly the polarization angle and I///I⊥ ratio of twisted CNT fibers. Raman depth profile measurements imply that the twisted fibers consist of non-uniform CNT alignments. A simplified two-CNT-alignment geometric model was proposed to illuminate the experimental observations. The results suggest that polarized Raman depth profile measurement would be a very useful approach for determining the distribution of CNT alignments in CNT fibers. Due to their lightweight, large surface area; excellent electrical conductivity; and mechanical strength, carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers show great potentials in serving as both electrode materials and current collectors in supercapacitors. In this paper, the capacitive properties of both as-spun CNT fibers and electrochemically activated CNT fibers have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It is found that the as-spun CNT fibers exhibit a very low specific capacitance of 2.6 F g, but electrochemically activated CNT fibers show considerably improved specific capacitance. The electrochemical activation has been realized by cyclic scanning in a wide potential window. Different electrolytes have also been examined to validate the applicability of our carbon materials and the activation mechanism. It is believed that such an activation process can significantly improve the surface wetting of the CNT fibers by electrolyte (aqueous NaSO solution). The cycling stability and rate-dependence of the capacitance have been studied, and the results suggest practical applications of CNT fibers in electrochemical supercapacitors. In situsynthesized MWNT–CuS hybrid nanostructures were fabricated into ultrasensitive photodetectors. Upon exposure to light illumination, the MWNT–CuS devices showed pronounced photocurrent with a response time less than 0.5 s even under zero bias. The response mechanism could be attributed to a fast charge dissociation process at the interfaces of MWNTs and CuS nanoparticles due to the formation of the Schottky junctions. A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based nanocomposite using fully exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) sheets and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared viaa simple procedure. It is confirmed from optical imaging that dispersion of CNTs in the PVA matrix can be significantly improved by adding GO sheets. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations suggest that the GO–CNT interaction is strong and the complex is thermodynamically favorable over agglomerates of CNTs. The GO–CNT scroll-like structure formed with the hydrophilic outer surface of GO can be well dispersed in water. More important, a synergistic effect arises from the combination of CNT and GO, the GO–CNT/PVA composite films show superior mechanical properties compared to PVA composite films enhanced by GO or CNT alone, not only the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites are significantly improved, but most of the ductility is also retained. The annealing behavior of the hexagonal phase content in cubic GaN (c-GaN) thin Films grown on GaAs (001) by MOCVD is reported. C-GaN thin films are grown on GaAs (001) substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). High temperature annealing is employed to treat the as-grown c-GaN thin films. The characterization of the c-GaN films is investigated by photoluminescence (PL) and Raman scattering spectroscopy. The change conditions of the hexagonal phase content in the metastable c-GaN are reported. There is a boundary layer existing in the c-GaN/GaAs film. When being annealed at high temperature, the intensity of the T0B and LOB phonon modes from the boundary layer weakens while that of the E2 phonon mode from the hexagonal phase increases. Cubic GaN was grown on GaAs (100) by low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were performed to characterize the quality of the GaN film. The PL spectra of cubic thin films being thicker than 1.5 μm were reported. Triple-crystal diffraction to analyze orientation distributions and strain of the thin films was also demonstrated. Freestanding electrode 3D architectures, based on Ni(OH)2 nanosheets grown on a joint‐welded carbon nanotube foam network, are introduced via a unique and facile chemical bath synthesis strategy. As a result of the unique 3D core configuration of nanotubes and the nanostructural shell design of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets, the prepared electrode displays an excellent electrochemical performance. The electrode shows an outstanding specific capacitance of 1272 F g−1 at a scan rate of 2 A g−1, and it even retained a value of 517 F g−1 at a scan rate of 20 A g−1. The excellent electrochemical performance is due to the highly conductive nanotube network and the unique nanostructure of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets, which promote the ion transport in fast speed, while facilitate the charge storage via redox reactions in nanosheets. The large specific capacitance and superior rate performance of core–shell Ni nanosheets, combined with the elasticity of the welded‐nanotube network, render these 3D architectures as promising candidates of freestanding electrodes for high‐performance flexible supercapacitor applications. Leveraging the unique properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) intramolecular junctions (IMJs) in innovative nanodevices and next-generation nanoelectronics requires controllable, repeatable, and large-scale preparation, together with rapid identification and comprehensive characterization of such structures. Here we demonstrate SWNT IMJs through directly growing ultralong SWNTs on trenched substrates. It is found that the trench configurations introduce axial strain in partially suspended nanotubes, and promote bending deformation in the vicinity of the trench edges. As a result, the lattice and electronic structure of the nanotubes can be locally modified, to form IMJs in the deformation regions. The trench patterns also enable pre-defining the formation locations of SWNT IMJs, facilitating the rapid identification. Elaborate Raman characterization has verified the formation of SWNT IMJs and identified their types. Nonlinear stress-strain behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers is studied based on the test data where fiber strength can be modeled by the Weibull distribution. CNT fibers spun from vertically aligned arrays are tensioned at slow sustained strain rate (0.00001 1/s) to study the tensile strength resulting from sliding-to-failure effects. A model is developed to estimate the Weibull modulus which characterizes the dispersion of fiber strengths in terms of the maximum sustained stress and failure strain of the fibers. The structural properties of dry-spun carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers were characterized by depth-profiled polarized Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that the twisting cannot be fully transferred through the whole fiber and the CNTs within fibers possess non-uniform alignments in radial direction. Effective twisting depth was determined from the residue strain distribution within fibers. Larger surface twisting angles can result in higher residue strain, better alignment degree, and deeper twisting depth. Fundamental studies on the effects of strain rate and size on the distribution of tensile strength of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers are reported in this paper. Experimental data show that the mechanical strength of CNT fibers increases from 0.2 to 0.8 GPa as the strain rate increases from 0.00001 to 0.1 (1/s). In addition, the influence of fiber diameter at low and high strain rate conditions was investigated further with statistical analysis. A modified Weibull distribution model for characterizing the tensile strength distribution of CNT fibers taking into account the effect of strain rate and fiber diameter is proposed.
