2. Inquiry Activity Design from Singaporean and Indonesian Physics Textbooks.

The purpose of this study was to explore instructional designs for promoting inquiry practices in secondary school textbooks. Three criteria were employed to select the textbooks: (1) approved by the Ministry of Education in Singapore and the Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia, (2) used in secondary schools, and (3) included content and practices based on the current curriculum. Based on these criteria, six science textbooks from Singapore and three from Indonesia were selected for further coding in the dimensions of learning goals of inquiry skills, nature of scientific inquiry, and inquiry types. The results showed that more activities in both the Singaporean and Indonesian textbooks focus on observing and interpreting skills. However, few activities in the textbooks from either country provide an opportunity for students to engage nature of scientific inquiry. In addition, more activities in the Singaporean textbooks were designed as guided inquiry than those in the Indonesian textbooks. Finally, it is suggested that inquiry activities in textbooks should be revised to include nature of scientific inquiry, and more textbook analysis studies are needed to reveal characteristics of inquiry activities in textbooks for different subjects. The growing preference for incorporating microbial aspartic proteases in industries is due to their high catalytic function and high degree of substrate selectivity. These properties, however, are attributable to molecular alterations in their structure and a variety of other characteristics. Molecular tools, functional genomics, and genome editing technologies coupled with other biotechnological approaches have aided in improving the potential of industrially important microbial proteases by addressing some of their major limitations, such as: low catalytic efficiency, low conversion rates, low thermostability, and less enzyme yield. However, the native folding within their full domain is dependent on a surrounding structure which challenges their functionality in substrate conversion, mainly due to their mutual interactions in the context of complex systems. Hence, manipulating their structure and controlling their expression systems could potentially produce enzymes with high selectivity and catalytic functions. The proteins produced by microbial aspartic proteases are industrially capable and far-reaching in regulating certain harmful distinctive industrial processes and the benefits of being eco-friendly. This review provides: an update on current trends and gaps in microbial protease biotechnology, exploring the relevant recombinant strategies and molecular technologies widely used in expression platforms for engineering microbial aspartic proteases, as well as their potential industrial and biotechnological applications. A total synthesis strategy was developed for the synthesis of luotonin A, B and their analogues using synergistic FeCl3/KI‐catalyzed oxidative cyclization. This protocol utilizes cheap and widely available N‐propargyl 2‐methyl‐quinazolinones and arylamines under mild conditions, and it has a wide substrate scope and high atom economy. Different natural products (luotonin A, B and derivatives) can be synthesized via a unique switchable approach. Further transformations from luotonin B to luotonin E and structural modification of natural products demonstrate the potential applications of this method. 5. Alterations and predictive value of blood routine parameters in patients with lupus enteritis: A retrospective study.

Background: Lupus enteritis (LE) is prone to incorrect and missed diagnoses. LE primarily occurs during the active stage of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which often manifests with alterations in peripheral blood cell that may serve as indicators of disease activity and organ damage. This study aims to investigate the alterations and predictive value of routine blood parameters for LE diagnosis. Methods: This exploratory study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 36 patients with SLE who were admitted to Suining Central Hospital between January 2006 and April 2023. Additionally, a control group consisting of 72 SLE patients without LE, matched for sex and age, was enrolled. A comparison was made between the two groups regarding clinical characteristics and changes in routine blood parameters. Binary logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were conducted to identify independent risk factors and evaluate their diagnostic performance for LE. Results: The LE group exhibited significantly higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), along with a lower lymphocyte count (LYM), compared to the control group (p <.05). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that NLR independently predicted the onset of LE, with an odds ratio of 1.347 and a 95% confidence interval of 1.070–1.696 (p <.01). ROC curve analysis demonstrated that NLR had an area under the curve of 0.68 for diagnosing LE (p <.05). When the cutoff value was set at 2.44, the Youden Index was only 0.31. Conclusion: Significant differences were observed in several routine parameters between patients with LE and the control group, which can be attributed to the occurrence of LE during the active stage of SLE. However, only the NLR emerged as an independent risk factor for LE,and its predicting vulue for was insufficient; no blood routine parameter has been identified as an reliable predictor for LE. 8. Analysis of Physics Textbooks Through the Lens of Inquiry Practices.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the learning goals, nature of science, inquiry skills, understanding of inquiry, and inquiry types in the senior high school physics textbooks in Indonesia. We selected the textbooks based on three criteria: (1) approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Indonesia, (2) widely used in senior high schools, and (3) included content and practices based on the current curriculum. Content analysis was used to analyze 10th, 11th, and 12th grade textbooks. We found that more physics topics focused on the cognitive than on the epistemic, affective, and sociocultural aspects in these textbooks. The findings show that nature of science was emphasized in the textbooks, but they were more focused on science as a cognitive-epistemic system. Furthermore, we found that structured inquiry was more emphasized than confirmed and guided inquiry. Finally, structured inquiry focused more on inquiry skills than on the understanding of inquiry in all three textbooks, while observing and communicating skills were more emphasized in the physics activities. 9. Fabrication of Biofunctionalized Protease-Based Chitosan/Collagen Composite Membranes and Efficient Biodegradation Using Recombinant Aspergillus Fumigatus.

The present study aimed at developing chitosan/collagen protease-based composite membranes loaded with enzyme nanoparticles and accessing its efficient biodegradation using a recombinantly produced aspartic protease from Aspergillus fumigatus (AfAP) with functional biochemical properties. By using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the resulting membranes, it was found that the ENPs and the chitosan-collagen composite membranes were highly compatible. Thermal properties (TG, DTG and DSC) were employed to evaluate the changes in the structural and physical properties which reached 384.94 °C, and a residual mass of 4.21 ± 0.13%. The ENPs loaded membranes exhibited marginally improved antioxidant and microbial growth inhibitory activities reaching 57.29 ± 2.77% and 10.33 ± 0.65 mm respectively. Additionally, the respective protease employed for the degradation studies was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris (GS115) host cells, with functional pH and temperature optima between pH 4.0–5.0 and 60 °C respectively, and specific activity of 8408.9 ± 305.6 U/mg. It also exhibited enhanced specificity to its substrates upon collagen, chitosan, Bovine serum albumin (BSA), casein and casein sodium salt degradation with specific activities of 1477 ± 99.1, 1177 ± 103, and 1051.6 ± 60.7 U/mg respectively. Furthermore, the composite membranes showed excellent biodegradability by the 6th day in a natural environment treated with the aspartic protease from Aspergillus fumigatus (AfAP). Thus, the developed nanocomposite membranes from chitosan/collagen exhibited great potential and can well mimic the functions of a new generation of biodegradable and sustainable membranes. 10. Riemann–Hilbert problems and soliton solutions for the reverse space-time nonlocal Sasa–Satsuma equation.

The main work of this paper is to study the soliton solutions and asymptotic behavior of the integrable reverse space-time nonlocal Sasa–Satsuma equation, which is derived from the coupled two-component Sasa–Satsuma system with a specific constraint. The soliton solutions of the nonlocal Sasa–Satsuma equation are constructed through solving the inverse scattering problems by Riemann–Hilbert method. Compared with local systems, discrete eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the reverse space-time nonlocal Sasa–Satsuma equation have novel symmetries and constraints. On the basis of these symmetry relations of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, the one-soliton and two-soliton solutions are obtained and the dynamic properties of these solitons are shown graphically. Furthermore, the asymptotic behaviors of two-soliton solutions are analyzed. All these results about physical features and mathematical properties may be helpful to comprehend nonlocal nonlinear system better. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. A Low-Cost Fertilizer Medium Supplemented with Urea for the Lutein Production of Chlorella sp. and the Ability of the Lutein to Protect Cells against Blue Light Irradiation.

This study aimed to investigate the use of organic fertilizers instead of modified f/2 medium for Chlorella sp. cultivation, and the extracted lutein of the microalga to protect mammal cells against blue-light irradiation. The biomass productivity and lutein content of Chlorella sp. cultured in 20 g/L fertilizer medium for 6 days were 1.04 g/L/d and 4.41 mg/g, respectively. These values are approximately 1.3- and 1.4-fold higher than those achieved with the modified f/2 medium, respectively. The cost of medium per gram of microalgal biomass reduced by about 97%. The microalgal lutein content was further increased to 6.03 mg/g in 20 g/L fertilizer medium when supplemented with 20 mM urea, and the cost of medium per gram lutein reduced by about 96%. When doses of ≥1 μM microalgal lutein were used to protect mammal NIH/3T3 cells, there was a significant reduction in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by the cells in the following blue-light irradiation treatments. The results show that microalgal lutein produced by fertilizers with urea supplements has the potential to develop anti-blue-light oxidation products and reduce the economic challenges of microalgal biomass applied to carbon biofixation and biofuel production. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive system, ranking third for morbidity and mortality worldwide. At present, no effective control method is available for this cancer type. In tumor cells, especially iron metabolization, is necessary for its growth and proliferation. High levels of iron are an important feature to maintain tumor growth; however, the overall mechanism remains unclear. Methods: We used western blotting, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time quantitative PCR to analyze the expression of IGF2BP2 in cell lines and tissues. Further, RNA-sequencing, RNA immunoprecipitation and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation experiments explored the specific binding of target genes. Moreover, the RNA stability assay was performed to determine the half-life of genes downstream of IGF2BP2. In addition, the Cell Counting Kit-8, colony formation assay, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine assay and flow cytometry were used to evaluate the effects of IGF2BP2 on proliferation and iron metabolism. Lastly, the role of IGF2BP2 in promoting CRC growth was demonstrated in animal models. Results: We observed that IGF2BP2 is associated with iron homeostasis and that TFRC is a downstream target of IGF2BP2. Further, overexpression of TFRC can rescue the growth of IGF2BP2-knockdown CRC cells. Mechanistically, we determined that IGF2BP2 regulates TFRC methylation via METTL4, thereby regulating iron metabolism and promoting CRC growth. Furthermore, using animal models, we observed that IGF2BP2 promotes CRC growth. Conclusion: IGF2BP2 regulates TFRC mRNA methylation via METTL4, thereby regulating iron metabolism and promoting CRC growth. 13. The collaborative discourse characteristics of high school students during a web-based module for a socioscientific issue.

In order to cultivate students to be able to participate in public affairs and make decisions about socioscientific issues (SSI), a web-based module was designed for students to collaboratively engage in the decision-making (DM) process. This study attempted to identify students' discourse characteristics that might lead to formulating an evidence-based decision on SSI. Twenty-nine Grade 10 students were randomly divided into eight groups of three or four. The transcribed data of one case from each performance level were compared to investigate the interplay between groups' DM performances and discourse characteristics. The results showed that the group that gained a high score on the DM group worksheet engaged in the metacognitive discussion for planning procedures of the module tools and in the conceptual exchanges to accomplish the tasks. The members of this group could initiate and extend ideas, provide prompts, and confirm or reject each other's ideas, resulting in sustained interactive dialogs that allowed them to learn from one another. This indicated that students need to be encouraged to clarify the task goals, plan procedures, monitor their performance, and exchange their ideas actively. The implications of how collaborative discourse promote students' SSI DM performance, and the better design and enactment of SSI modules are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Integrability and multisoliton solutions of the reverse space and/or time nonlocal Fokas–Lenells equation.

This paper studies reverse space and/or time nonlocal Fokas–Lenells (FL) equation, which describes the propagation of nonlinear light pulses in monomode optical fibers when certain higher-order nonlinear effects are considered, by Hirota bilinear method. Firstly, we construct variable transformations from reverse space nonlocal FL equation to reverse time and reverse space-time nonlocal FL equations. Secondly, the multisoliton and quasi-periodic solutions of the reverse space nonlocal FL equation are derived through Hirota bilinear method, and the soliton solutions of reverse time and reverse space-time nonlocal FL equations are given through variable transformations. Also, dynamical behaviors of the multisoliton solutions are discussed in detail by analyzing their wave structures. Thirdly, asymptotic analysis of two- and three-soliton solutions of reverse space nonlocal FL equation is used to investigate the elastic interaction and inelastic interaction. Finally, the infinite conservation laws of three types of nonlocal FL equations are found by using their lax pairs. The results obtained in this paper possess new properties that different from the ones for FL equation, which are useful in exploring novel physical phenomena of nonlocal systems in nonlinear media. The purpose of this study was to explore the interplay of students' regulation learning in groups and their collective decision-making about a socioscientific issue. Thirty-eight 10th-grade students participated in the study. A variety of data were collected to examine the students' collective decision-making and regulation learning while they collaboratively conducted a socioscientific decision-making activity, including worksheets, computer activity recordings, and students' verbal interactions. The results indicated strong associations which showed that students who had sophisticated decision-making in a group tended to have more social shared regulation, and performed more regulation behaviours to refine their collective decision-making. The sequential analysis also indicated that students who manifested the serial nature of regulation processes and goal-driven learning might have exhibited a sophisticated decision-making performance when engaged in collective decision-making. The deficiencies in group interaction identified in this study underscore the need to provide scaffolds for regulation learning in order to refine students' collective decision-making in a SSI context. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is a new emerging strategy for the in situ treatment of tumors. In the microenvironment of tumor cells, CDT may be achieved through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), e.g., hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and singlet oxygen (
1 O2 ), which induce the death of tumor cells. Copper (Cu) or other transition-metal ions catalyze the production of ˙OH by hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) through Fenton or Fenton-like reactions. With the development of advanced nanotechnology, nanotherapeutic systems with Cu-based nanostructures have received extensive attention and have been demonstrated for their wide applications in the design and construction of nanotherapeutic systems for CDT, along with multimodal synergistic therapy. Herein, the cutting-edge developments of Cu-based nanostructures in CDT are reviewed and discussed, by focusing on the monotherapy of CDT as well as synergistic treatments by hyphenating CDT with various therapeutic protocols, e.g., photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), sonodynamic therapy (SDT), and so on. In addition, the potential challenges and future perspectives are described in the improvement of CDT therapeutic efficacy, the enhancement of targeting capability, and mechanistic investigations on CDT therapy. 19. Features and trends of teaching strategies for scientific practices from a review of 2008–2017 articles.

This study analyzed 2008–2017 articles in primary science education journals to explore the features and trends of teaching strategies for scientific practices. Five criteria were used to select the articles: (1) emphasizing inquiry teaching in either the theoretical framework or the findings section, (2) incorporating teaching strategies into inquiry teaching or professional development, (3) selecting science as subject matter, (4) being empirical research, and (5) not including special needs or ESL (English as Second Language) students as participants. Based on the above criteria, 310 articles were selected for further coding in the dimensions of teaching strategies and teaching goals. The teaching goals for the usage of the teaching strategies for scientific practices include affective, epistemic and sociocultural goals. Two categories of teaching strategies were coded for scientific practices including student-centered and teacher-centered strategies. The results showed that student-centered teaching strategies were adopted more than teacher-centered strategies; and experimenting, discussing, and a combination of experimenting and discussing were the most used teaching strategies, which were mostly used to achieve the cognitive and affective teaching goals. An earthquake of magnitude M5.7 occurred in Yamutu village, Songyuan City, Jilin Province, NE China (45°16′12″N/124°42′35″E) on May 28, 2018, with a focal depth of 13 km. The epicenter is located at the intersection of the Fuyu/Songyuan-Zhaodong Fault, Second Songhua River Fault and Fuyu North Fault which lies northwest of Tancheng-Lujiang Fault (Tan-Lu Fault). The earthquake-induced widespread liquefaction structures and ground surface fissures within 3 km from the epicenter, caused serious disasters to the local surroundings. The visible liquefied structures include sand volcanoes, liquefied sand mounds, sand dikes and sand sills. Sand volcanoes can be divided into sand volcano with a crater, sand volcano without a crater and water volcano (no sand). Other soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) induced by the earthquake include deformation lamination, load and flame structures, deformation folds, dish structures, convolute bedding and water-escape structures. The formation process of the sand volcanoes comprises three stages: (1) building up excess pore-fluid pressure in the liquefied layer, (2) cracking of the low-permeable overlying layer, and (3) mixture of sand-water venting out of the ground surface. During the upward movement, the liquefied sand is injected into the low-permeable layer to form sand veins, sand sills and various types of deformation structures. Vertical distribution of seismic liquefaction structure can be divided into four zones: the thoroughly liquefied zone, the lower liquefied zone with SSDS, the upper liquefied zone with SSDS, and the ground surface liquefied zone. The liquefaction occurred at a burial depth of 2–5 m, and the thickness of liquefied sand is 2 m. NE-SW (35°–215°) trending compressive stress is possibly the seismogenic trigger of the Songyuan M5.7 earthquake that caused the fault (Fuyu/Songyuan-Zhaodong Fault) to reactivate. The study of the Songyuan seismic liquefaction structures gives insight into the prediction of modern earthquakes and disaster-prone areas. Meanwhile it provides abundant basic material for studying earthquake-induced SSDS in both ancient and modern sediments. The research is obviously of great significance to reveal that the northern Tan-Lu Fault has entered a stage of active seismic activity since the twenty-first century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of puerarin on the hyperpermeability of vascular endothelial cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and its underlying mechanisms. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were pre-incubated with puerarin (25, 50, and 100 μM) for 1 h, and then exposed to LPS (1 μg/mL). The monolayer permeability of endothelial cells was assessed by measuring the paracellular flux of FITC-dextran 40,000 (FD40). The expression of vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) in HUVECs was examined by Western blotting analysis. A total of 18 mice were randomly assigned into three groups as follows: control group, LPS group, and puerarin group. The pulmonary W/D ratio (wet-to-dry weight ratios) was calculated, and the lung morphology was examined. The levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in cell supernatant and mouse serum were determined by ELISA. Compared with the control group, LPS obviously increased the flux of FD40 and the monolayer permeability, raised the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in cell supernatant, and reduced the VE-cadherin expression in HUVECs. However, puerarin (25, 50, and 100 μM) was able to relieve such LPS-induced increase in flux of FD40 and then reduce the hyperpermeability. Puerarin decreased the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in cell supernatant and increased the VE-cadherin expression in HUVECs (P < 0.05). Moreover, LPS obviously increased the levels of TNF-α and IL-1β in mouse serum and elevated the pulmonary W/D ratios, resulting in lung injury. However, all of above-mentioned LPS-induced changes were improved by puerarin pre-treatment. Puerarin could alleviate LPS-induced hyperpermeability in endothelial cells via preventing downregulation of endothelial cadherin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the effects of metacognitive and cognitive prompting on the scientific inquiry practices of students with various levels of initial metacognition. Two junior high school classes participated in this study. One class, the experimental group (n = 26), which received an inquiry-based curriculum with a combination of cognitive and metacognitive prompts, was compared to the other class, the comparison group (n = 25), which received only cognitive prompts in the same curriculum. Data sources included a test of inquiry practices, a questionnaire of metacognition, and worksheets. The results showed that the mixed cognitive and metacognitive prompts had significant impacts on the students’ inquiry practices, especially their planning and analyzing abilities. Furthermore, the mixed prompts appeared to have a differential effect on those students with lower level metacognition, who showed significant improvement in their inquiry abilities. A combination of cognitive and metacognitive prompts during an inquiry cycle was found to promote students’ inquiry practices. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
A simplified calculation model of specific absorption rate (SAR) for laptop-mounted equipment, based on the theories of transmission-line and the surface impedance, is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the realistic system composed of wireless data card, laptop and liquid phantom is accurately modeled. Then, we propose a calculation model of SAR based on transmission-line theory and the amplitude of the surface impedance to simplify the reference liquid phantom. The distributions of the SAR along axis x, y and z and peak-average SAR are almost identical between reference phantom and simplified phantom, while the efficiency can be improved by more than 30 %. The generalized f (R) gravity with coupling in five-dimensional (5D) spacetime is studied on the basis of both the 4D generalized f (R) gravity with coupling and the pure f (R) gravity without coupling in 5D spacetime. Specif-ically, by assuming a hypersurface-orthogonal space-like Killing vector field in 5D spacetime, the generalization of the 4D generalized f (R) gravity to 5D can be realized, which can give the reduced 4-metric coupled with two scalar fields. In particular, we discuss a special class of models, i.e., f1(R) = f2(R) = aR
m (m ≠ 1), and choose B(Lm ) = Lm = --p in the homogeneous and isotropic cosmology with the 4D Friedmann-Robertson-Walker met-ric. The numerical analysis shows that the parameter rn can be constrained by means of the current observations for the deceleration parameter, which implies that this generalized f (R) model with coupling in 5D spacetime can account for the present accelerated expansion of the universe. ABSTRACT Drawing upon the literature in computational modeling, multivariable reasoning, and causal attribution, this study aims at characterizing multivariable reasoning practices in computational modeling and revealing the nature of understanding about multivariable causality. We recruited two freshmen, two sophomores, two juniors, two seniors, four master's students, and four PhD students in atmospheric sciences as participants. Participants' reasoning practices and understanding of multivariable causality were examined using semistructured interviews and recordings of their computer activities. Analyses show that participants with high expertise tended to take a mechanism approach to predict and identify relationships, focused more on multivariable relationships, and purposefully selected and tested variables. The findings also indicate that understanding about multiple causality involved recognition and identification of the integration rules of multiple effects and the attributes of variables (e.g., interactive and reciprocal) and relationships (e.g., direction and feedback loop). Additionally, this study suggests an interaction between participants' reasoning practices and their understanding of multivariable causality; participants' understanding about the integration rules and the attributes could initiate reasoning practices, and by the enactment of practices, the rules and attributes were confirmed and examined. Poor drug efficacy is a prominent cause of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treatment failure. Although increased efforts in developing OSCC therapeutic strategies have been achieved in recent decades, the 5-year survival rate of patients with OSCC remains poor and effective drugs to treat OSCC are lacking. The aim of the present study was to investigate the apoptotic effect caused by lycorine hydrochloride (LH) and to identify its mechanism in the OSCC HSC-3 cell line. The findings demonstrated that LH effectively induced HSC-3 cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest at the G
0 /G1 phase, resulting in the inhibition of cell proliferation. Furthermore, it was found that LH increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, triggered mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) disorder, enhanced the protein expression levels of Bax, Bim, cleaved caspase-9, caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 and decreased Mcl-1 expression. The protein expression levels of important members of the JNK signaling pathway, including phosphorylated (p)-JNK, p-mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 4 and p-c-Jun, were significantly increased in LH-treated cells, accompanied by an increase in ROS. However, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a potent antioxidant, reversed the upregulated mRNA expression of c-Jun, as well as the enhanced ROS production, the disorder of MMP and the apoptosis of HSC-3 cells induced by LH. These results suggested that LH may induce HSC-3 cell apoptosis via the ROS-mediated mitochondrial apoptotic pathway and the JNK signaling pathway, which indicated that LH may be a potential drug candidate for anti-OSCC therapy. Simple Summary: The dietary inclusion of the combination of tributyrin with either oregano or methyl salicylate as a substitution to antibiotics improved intestinal morphological structure of weaned piglets and resulted in major changes in the profiles of intestine microbiota and metabolites, which exerted beneficial effects on intestinal health of piglets. Our study indicated that the combination of tributyrate with oregano or methyl salicylate could be used as an alternative feed additive to the antibiotics. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary inclusion of the combination of tributyrin with oregano or methyl salicylate as a substitute to antibiotics on gut health and microbiota of piglets. A total of 48 weaned crossbred piglets (Duroc × Large White × Landrace, 8.79 ± 0.97 kg, 21 ± 1 d) were randomly allocated to four experimental groups and fed for 4 weeks: the basal diet (Con); the control plus antibiotics (AB); the control plus oregano and tributyrin (OT); and the control plus methyl salicylate and tributyrin (MT). Although a numerical improvement on feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio was observed in the OT and MT as well as the AB group, the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). The OT and MT groups were larger in villus height in the duodenum compared to the Con (p < 0.05), and were larger in relative abundance of Firmicutes/Bacaeroides in the intestine compared to Con and AB groups (p < 0.01). The amount of major different metabolites was 6, 8 and 8 for the AB, OT and MT groups when compared to the Con, respectively. In conclusion, as a substitute for antibiotics the inclusion of the combination of tributyrin with either oregano or methyl salicylate to the diet of weaned piglets improved the intestinal morphological structure and altered intestinal microbiota and metabolites, which were beneficial to the animal health. - Abstract
Overtaking accidents caused by improper operations performed by a driver occur frequently. However, most studies on overtaking safety have neglected research into driver control input. A novel method is proposed to obtain the driver control input during the overtaking process. Meanwhile, to improve the safety of overtaking, two types of safe distances, and the time of the overtaking are considered. Path constraints are established when considering the two types of safe distances. An optimal control model is established to solve the minimum time maneuver under multiple constraints. Using the Gauss pseudospectral method, the optimal control problem is converted into a nonlinear programming problem, which is then solved through sequential quadratic programming (SQP). In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified based on the results of a Carsim simulation. The simulation results show that by adopting an inverse dynamics method to solve the manipulation problem of the vehicle's minimum overtaking time, the manipulation capability of a vehicle in completing an overtaking safely within the minimum time can be obtained.
