Background and Objectives: Uterine lieomyomata are one of the causes of female infertility. Surgical excision of these tumour may improve the fertility outcome in these females. The present study was conducted to evaluate the role of myomectomy on fertility after abdominal surgery and to see the influence of the number, size, and location of uterine Leiomyomas pertaining to fertility outcome after the surgery. Methods: It was a descriptive cross sectional study, carried out in the department of obstetrics and gynecology Lady Willingdon Hospital from January 2008 - December 2011. A total of 30 patients of abdominal myomectomy were included. The women were 25 - 40 years of age with submucousal and intramural fibroids of varying size ranging from 4 cm to 20 cm. Myomectomy was performed in all patients by enucleating all fibroids. Results: Uterine cavity was opened in 11 patients (36.6%). Out of thirty patients, 19 patients (63%) conceived spontaneously within 12 - 24 months. There were no spontaneous abortions. Eleven patients failed to conceive yet, two of which found to have bilateral tubal occlusion. Remaining nine patients require further follow-up. Out of 19 pregnancies, 3 were pre-term deliveries (15.8%). One patient delivered vaginally (5.3%).18 patients were delivered by caesarean section (94.7%).Three patients had malpresentations (15.8%) and two had post-partum hemorrhage (10.5%). Operative blood loss ranged from 1600 ml - 2500 ml. hospital stay was between 5 - 7 days. Conclusion: The reproductive outcome was improved after abdominal myomectomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: Denture induced stomatitis (DIS) is quite common (up to 65%) among complete denture (CD) wearers and is generally associated with candida albicans (CA). The management of candida associated DIS in elderly is complex due to poor compliance on the part of patient. In this in vivo study, Nystatin was incorporated into tissue conditioner (TC) for the treatment of denture induced stomatitis and investigated the effectiveness of this combination against candida albicans. Methods: It was an interventional, quasi experimental study in which tissue conditioner with Nystatin (500,000 units) and without Nystatin was applied on the fitting surface of upper denture. Effect of this medication against candida albicans was observed. Thirty six (36) patients were selected by purposive non-probability sampling. Upper complete denture was divided into right (Rt) and left (Lt) sides for medication. Right side was the control side i.e., tissue conditioner alone was applied while left side was interventional side i.e., tissue conditioner incorporated with Nystatin (500,000 units) was applied. Samples were taken from the palatal mucosa of both sides before the application of the tissue conditioner and 3 days after medication; candida colonies were detected and counted. Results: The reduction in the number of colonies on both sides was significant (p <. 05) but it was highly marked on the interventional side than on the control side. Conclusion: Nystatin (500,000 units) when combined with tissue conditioner was effective against candida albicans and can be an effective treatment in non-compliant DIS patients. Background and Objectives: The study aims to determine the correlation between interalar width (IAW) and size of natural maxillary anterior teeth (NMAT) in a sample of Pakistani population for evaluating the reliability of use of nasal index as a guide in selection of artificial maxillary anterior teeth (AMAT). Methods: Interalar width (IAW) measurements of 280 dental students were recorded directly from faces while intercanine width (ICWTTC, ICWDDC, ICWTTS) was measured from the stone cast and correlation was determined using computer software SPSS25. Results: Results showed a significant correlation between nasal width and AMAT in the study sample. Using regression analysis the predicted values of size of natural maxillary anterior teeth of the entire sample showed no significant difference between recorded and predicted values of intercanine width (ICWDDC). Conclusion: It was concluded that use of interalar width directly to determine the size of six maxillary anterior teeth can lead to selection of appropriate sized maxillary anterior artificial teeth. The validity of use of IAW in selection of AMAT and making of esthetically pleasing dentures can thus be reliably predicted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose The McGill Consensus (2002) recommends two-implant over denture as the first choice for treatment for the edentulous mandible. There have been numerous methods described to aid the retention of complete lower dentures. Recently plastic low-profile attachments have become available for use with implant supported dentures. Other than their low profile they are advertised as being simpler to maintain and more economic than their ball and clip or O-ring counterparts. However, there appears to be a lack of data on the retentive forces these for these systems. Two over denture retaining systems - the Locator and the Southern Implant-incorporating plastic retaining components were tested and compared. This in vitro study set out to measure the retentive forces created by the Southern Implant ball and clip and the Zest Anchor Locator press-stud. Each system tested offered several different strengths of attachment. Methodology: A custom built jig was used to hold the various components for each attachment system and mount the monacyclic testing machine. Thisenabledmeasurementofthe retentive forces created by each attachment system 3,000 cycles of insertion and removal in a simulated oral environment. Results: The retentive forces created by the Southern Implants plastic clips and Locator nylon inserts fell exponentially with the number of the test cycle. After 100 cycles, the retentive forces created by the Southern Implant plastic clips ranged between 7.5 – 11.0N; for the Locatornyl on inserts the range was between 7.2 – 15.7N. Conclusion: The retentive forces of the Southern Implant clips and Locator inserts provide values with-in the range normally suggested as necessary to resisted is placement of a denture when chewing sticky food.
