Abstract

The article discusses the results of a study which examines the mechanism that caused the decrease in the production of an autoinducer-2- (AI-2) inactivating enzyme by the periodontopathogenic bacterium, Eikenella corrodens. The study described the extraction and purification of AI-2 from the supernatant of mid-log-phase culture to analyze the dramatic decrease in AI-2 activity during the stationary phase. It revealed the involvement of heat-stable proteins in AI-2 inactivation.
