Eutrophication is a global issue associated with increasing anthropogenic activities. Previous studies have mainly focused on nutrients and phytoplankton biomass in some typical estuaries and bays along the Guangdong coast, while integrated evaluations of eutrophication status based on ecological symptoms is still rare in this area. To better understand the health of the Guangdong coastal waters, two comprehensive methods including the Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status (ASSETS) and the Northwest Pacific Action Plan Common Procedure (NOWPAP CP) were employed with slight modifications. The study area was divided into eight coastal zones (Z1~Z8) based on multiple criteria including salinity, catchment range, and administrative division. The results of the modified NOWPAP CP method demonstrated a generally increasing trend in the degree and effects of nutrient enrichment along the Guangdong coast in the past 30 years mainly due to the increasing nutrients and chlorophyll a (Chl-a). The results of the modified ASSETS method revealed that the water quality was between moderate and high for most coastal zones during 2015-2018, with the highest score (0.83) in the northern part of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). However, the ecological symptoms showed inconsistent spatial patterns with the water quality, being high or moderate high in Z2 (including Zhanjiang Harbor and Leizhou Bay), Z4~Z5 (representing the northern and southern parts of the PRE, respectively), and Z6 (containing Mirs Bay and Daya Bay) for severe ecological symptoms, such as high levels of Chl-a, frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs). Moreover, eutrophication in Z4~Z6 may further deteriorate due to the increasing nutrient loads driven by growing economy and population. Synthetically, Z2, Z4~Z6 were graded between poor and bad for the overall eutrophication conditions (OEC), while Z1 (including the western and southern parts of the Leizhou Peninsula) and Z7 (consisting of Honghai Bay and Jieshi Bay) had a good OEC. The application of the modified ASSETS method effectively identified areas of severe eutrophication problems and the prospect of nutrient load along the Guangdong coast. The assessment results revealed the spatiotemporal variations and potential trends in the eutrophication status, providing scientific basis for the coastal management related to nutrient problems. Polymeric carbohydrates are abundant and their recycling by microbes is a key process of the ocean carbon cycle. A deeper analysis of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) can offer a window into the mechanisms of microbial communities to degrade carbohydrates in the ocean. In this study, metagenomic genes encoding microbial CAZymes and sugar transporter systems were predicted to assess the microbial glycan niches and functional potentials of glycan utilization in the inner shelf of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). The CAZymes gene compositions were significantly different between in free-living (0.2-3 μm, FL) and particle-associated (>3 μm, PA) bacteria of the water column and between water and surface sediments, reflecting glycan niche separation on size fraction and selective degradation in depth. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota had the highest abundance and glycan niche width of CAZymes genes, respectively. At the genus level, Alteromonas (Gammaproteobacteria) exhibited the greatest abundance and glycan niche width of CAZymes genes and were marked by a high abundance of periplasmic transporter protein TonB and members of the major facilitator superfamily (MFS). The increasing contribution of genes encoding CAZymes and transporters for Alteromonas in bottom water contrasted to surface water and their metabolism are tightly related with particulate carbohydrates (pectin, alginate, starch, lignin-cellulose, chitin, and peptidoglycan) rather than on the utilization of ambient-water DOC. Candidatus Pelagibacter (Alphaproteobacteria) had a narrow glycan niche and was primarily preferred for nitrogen-containing carbohydrates, while their abundant sugar ABC (ATP binding cassette) transporter supported the scavenging mode for carbohydrate assimilation. Planctomycetota, Verrucomicrobiota, and Bacteroidota had similar potential glycan niches in the consumption of the main component of transparent exopolymer particles (sulfated fucose and rhamnose containing polysaccharide and sulfated-Nglycan), developing considerable niche overlap among these taxa. The most abundant CAZymes and transporter genes as well as the widest glycan niche in the abundant bacterial taxa implied their potential key roles on the organic carbon utilization, and the high degree of glycan niches separation and polysaccharide composition importantly influenced bacterial communities in the coastal waters of PRE. The article discusses a study which aimed to identify environmental factors affecting phytoplankton structure in Daya Bay, South China Sea. It found that temperature and nutrient ratios are the factors driving phytoplankton succession in the bay. The role played by hydrodynamic processes in phytoplankton growth is noted. Also mentioned are diatoms which are the dominant species in the bay, including Chaetoceros affinis, Chaetoceros lorenzianus, and Nitzschia pungens.

Physicochemical and benthos data were collected from 12 marine monitoring stations in Daya Bay, during 2001-2004. 12 stations in Daya Bay could be grouped into three clusters: cluster I consisted of stations in the southern part of Daya Bay (stations S1, S2 and S6); cluster II consisted of stations in the cage culture areas (stations S3, S4, S5 and S8); cluster III consisted of stations in the southwest, the middle and the northeast of the Bay (stations S7, S9, S10, S11 and S12). Calculation with bivariate correlations between benthos and major physicochemical factors showed that the density of benthos in all stations correlated positively with temperature, DO, pH, NH-N, SiO-Si, SiO-Si /PO-P and chlorophyll a and was negatively correlated with salinity, Secchi, COD, NO-N, NO-N, TIN, PO-P, TIN/PO-P and BOD. Factor analysis showed that there were high positive loading salinity, Secchi and NH-N of three clusters. Results revealed that temperature, DO, pH, SiO-Si and SiO-Si/PO-P and chlorophyll a could also play an important role in determining the biomass of benthos in Daya Bay, especially near the Nuclear Power Plants, in the southern part and in the cage culture areas. A large data set obtained by a 1-year monthly determination of water quality from Sanya Bay, South China Sea, was treated by three-way principal component analysis aimed at exploring the spatial and temporal patterns of water quality in Sanya Bay. Tucker3 model of optimum complexity (2, 2, 1) explaining 33.18% of the data variance, allowed interpretation of the data information in three modes. The model explained spatial and temporal variation trends in terms of water quality variables during the study period. Water quality in sampling station (S2) Sanya River was mainly influenced by Sanya River, and water quality in other stations (S1, S3–S10) were mainly influenced by the waters in South China Sea. The results delineated the mouth of Sanya River as critical from pollution point of view. The dry season from October to the next April and rainy season from May to September have different influences on water quality in Sanya Bay. The information extracted by the three-way models would be very useful to regional agencies in developing a strategy to carry out scientific plans for resource use based on marine system functions. In this study, the effect of multiple heavy metal stress on ascorbate (AsA), glutathione (GSH) and related enzymes was investigated in the leaves, stems and roots of Kandelia candel and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza. Mangrove seedlings were treated with five different concentrations of a heavy metal mixture (Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+). Antioxidants in both the species were analyzed after one month. AsA, GSH, ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) and glutathione reductase (GR, EC 1.6.4.2) exhibited a similar trend with initial increase and subsequent decrease in response to heavy metal stress. At the highest metal concentration, a significant decrease of AsA and GR was observed in K. candel and B. gymnorrhiza. Glutathione peroxidase (GPX, EC 1.11.1.9) in the leaves, stems and roots of K. candel reached their respective maximal values at the highest metal concentration, whereas GPX activity in roots and stems of B. gymnorrhiza was similar to the controls at higher metal concentrations. Our results demonstrate that AsA, GSH, APX, GR and GPX in K. candel may play more important roles in defending against reactive oxygen species (ROS) than those in B. gymnorrhiza.
