Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are in demand in the field of high-tech microindustries and nanoindustries such as biomedical applications and soft robotics due to their exquisite magneto-sensitive response. Among various MRE applications, programmable actuators are emerging as promising soft robots because of their combined advantages of excellent flexibility and precise controllability in a magnetic system. Here, we present the development of magnetically programmable soft magnetic microarray actuators through field-induced injection molding using MREs, which consist of styrene-ethylene/butylene styrene (SEBS) elastomer and carbonyl iron powder (CIP). The ratio of the CIP/SEBS matrix was designed to maximize the CIP fraction based on a critical solids loading. Further, as part of the design of the magnetization distribution in micropillar arrays, the magnetorheological response of the molten composites was analyzed using the static and dynamic viscosity results for both the on and off magnetic states, which reflected the particle dipole interaction and subsequent particle alignment during the field-induced injection molding process. To develop a high-aspect-ratio soft magnetic microarray, X-ray lithography was applied to prepare the sacrificial molds with a height-to-width ratio of 10. The alignment of the CIP was designed to achieve a parallel magnetic direction along the micropillar columns, and consequently, the micropillar arrays successfully achieved the uniform and large bending actuation of up to approximately 81° with an applied magnetic field. Heterogeneous integration of two-dimensional materials and the conventional semiconductor has opened opportunities for next-generation semiconductor devices and their processing. Heterogeneous integration has been studied for economical manufacturing by substrate recycling and novel functionalities by a combination of incommensurate materials. However, utilizing the integration requires controlling locations of the integrated architectures. Here, we show area-selective deposition (ASD) of germanium on the graphene/MoS2 stack. Ge nucleation precisely occurred on the surfaces of the patterned graphene/MoS2 stack via dipole engineering. In this study, the growth temperature of ASD of Ge was significantly lower than that based on precursor desorption on SiO2. The first-principles calculations revealed that Ge deposited by ASD on the graphene/MoS2 stack was not affected by charge transfer. This work provides a viable way to utilize atomically thin materials for next-generation semiconductor devices, which can be applicable for "Beyond Moore" and "More Moore" approaches. Background: Inflammation, a vital immune response to infection and injury, is mediated by macrophage activation. While spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) and myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MyD88) are reportedly involved in inflammatory responses in macrophages, their roles and underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Methods: Here, the role of the MyD88-Syk axis and the mechanism by which Syk and MyD88 cooperate during macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses are explored using knockout conditions of these proteins and mutation strategy as well as flowcytometric and immunoblotting analyses. Results: Syk rapidly activates the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, and the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway is abolished in Syk−/− RAW264.7 cells. MyD88 activates Syk and Syk-induced activation of NF-κB signaling pathway in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells but Syk-induced inflammatory responses are significantly inhibited in MyD88−/− RAW264.7 cells. MyD88 interacts with Syk through the tyrosine 58 residue (Y58) in the hemi-immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM) of MyD88, leading to Syk activation and Syk-induced activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. Src activates MyD88 by phosphorylation at Y58 via the Src kinase domain. In addition, Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1) activation and Rac1-induced formation of filamentous actin (F actin) activate Src in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Conclusions: These results suggest that the MyD88-Syk axis is a critical player in macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses, and its function is promoted by an upstream Src kinase activated by Rac1-generated filamentous actin (F-actin). We report on morphology-controlled remote epitaxy via hydrothermal growth of ZnO micro- and nanostructure crystals on graphene-coated GaN substrate. The morphology control is achieved to grow diverse morphologies of ZnO from nanowire to microdisk by changing additives of wet chemical solution at a fixed nutrient concentration. Although the growth of ZnO is carried out on poly-domain graphene-coated GaN substrate, the direction of hexagonal sidewall facet of ZnO is homogeneous over the whole ZnO-grown area on graphene/GaN because of strong remote epitaxial relation between ZnO and GaN across graphene. Atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy corroborates the remote epitaxial relation. The non-covalent interface is applied to mechanically lift off the overlayer of ZnO crystals via a thermal release tape. The mechanism of facet-selective morphology control of ZnO is discussed in terms of electrostatic interaction between nutrient solution and facet surface passivated with functional groups derived from the chemical additives. We report the site-selective remote epitaxial growth of mechanically transferable ZnO microrod (MR) and microdisk (MD) arrays via hydrothermal growth. To designate the growth sites, a hole-patterned poly(methyl methacrylate) mask layer is formed on the graphene-coated GaN substrate. ZnO microarrays are exclusively grown to be either MR or MD on graphene-exposed patterned areas via the remote epitaxy. The remote heteroepitaxial relation between ZnO and GaN across graphene is observed by atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The non-covalent remote epitaxial interface allows the mechanical lift-off of the ZnO microarrays and mass-transfer onto a surface of interest using a sticky tape as those arrays are well maintained. The donor substrate is refurbished for repetitive position-controlled remote epitaxy. This study provides a simple method of fabricating mass-transferable microarrays of semiconductors that can maintain the addressable spatial arrays of semiconductors to an arbitrary receiver substrate for ease of heterogeneous integration without an additional assembly process for position control. Graphene is a single atomic plane of graphite, and it exhibits unique electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. Exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) contains various hydrophilic functional groups, such as hydroxyl, epoxide, and carboxyl groups, that can modify the hydrophobic characteristics of a membrane surface. Though reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has fewer functional groups than GO, its associated sp2 structures and physical properties can be recovered. A considerable amount of research has focused on the use of GO to obtain a pristine graphene material via reduction processes. In this study, polysulfone (PSf) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes that were blended with GO and rGO, respectively, were fabricated by using the immersion phase inversion method and an n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solvent. Results showed that the graphene nanomaterials, GO and rGO, can change the pore morphology (size and structure) of both PSf and PVDF membranes. The optimum content of both was then investigated, and the highest flux enhancement was observed with the 0.10 wt% GO-blended PSf membrane. The presence of functional groups in GO within prepared PSf and PVDF membranes alters the membrane characteristics to hydrophilic. An antifouling test and rejection efficiency evaluation also showed that the 0.10 wt% membrane provided the best performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effect of the water and gas atomized Fe–Si powders on the densification behavior and consequential magnetic properties of the sintered soft magnetic alloys by metal injection molding. The water and gas atomized Fe–Si powders were used to fabricate the injection molded parts with the same solids loading of 58 vol% to analyze the inherent characteristics of each powder admixture. Dilatometry analysis was performed to understand the densification behavior of the water and gas atomized powders, and the master sintering curve model was developed to quantify the differences. The results showed that a significant amount of oxides in the water atomized powder reduced not only the densification but also the overall magnetic properties. The gas atomized sample exhibited the higher sintered density than the water atomized sample, and consequentially higher magnetic induction was obtained. The lower core loss, lower coercivity, and the higher permeability were also obtained from the gas atomized sample with the relatively low oxide level and large grain size. In addition, Fe-10.2 wt% P (Fe-17 at% P) powder was added to activate the liquid phase sintering, as a method to overcome the weakness of poor densification of the Fe–Si powders. Although both the water and gas atomized samples achieved near-full density with Fe-10.2 wt% P, the gas atomized sample yielded superior magnetic properties as compared with the water atomized sample. Changing the material parameters such as powder characteristics and additives affects the final properties of an iron–carbon alloy. This study investigated the influences of three typical material parameters, iron particle size, graphite addition, and powder lubricant addition, on the density and mechanical properties of an iron–carbon alloy formed via powder compaction and sintering. Each material parameter was designed with five levels, and all of the powder mixtures were compacted under 500 MPa and sintered at 1120 °C for 30 min. The microstructure of the samples was observed for the green part and sintered part. Through the tensile test, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation were measured. The tensile fracture surface was also examined to understand the changes in mechanical properties according to the parameters. The correlations between mechanical properties and material parameters were characterized by the mapping functions, and a sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate which parameter had the larger influence on the mechanical properties. The results showed that graphite addition has the greatest influence on the mechanical properties due to the microstructural changes from hypoeutectoid structure to hypereutectoid structure. The suitable materials, metal nitrides, are a promising class of electrocatalyst materials for a highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) because they exhibit superior intrinsic conductivity and have higher sustainability than oxide-based materials. To our knowledge, for the first time, we report a designable synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) and mesoporous Co3N@amorphous N-doped carbon (AN-C) nanocubes (NCs) with well-controlled open-framework structures via monodispersed Co3[Co(CN)6]2 Prussian blue analogue (PBA) NC precursors using in situ nitridation and calcination processes. Co3N@AN-C NCs (2 h) demonstrate better OER activity with a remarkably low Tafel plot (69.6 mV·dec−1), low overpotential of 280 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm−2. Additionally, excellent cycling stability in alkaline electrolytes was exhibited without morphological changes and voltage elevations, superior to most reported hierarchical structures of transition-metal nitride particles. The presented strategy for synergy effects of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived transition-metal nitrides-carbon hybrid nanostructures provides prospects for developing high-performance and advanced electrocatalyst materials. Semiconductor epitaxy on two-dimensional materials is beneficial for transferrable and flexible device applications. Graphene, due to the absence of permanent electric dipoles, cannot screen the electric field coming from the opposite side surface, allowing remote epitaxy for heteroepitaxy. This study demonstrates remote heteroepitaxy of ZnO microrods (MRs) on the GaN substrate across graphene layers via hydrothermal growth. Even the use of tri-layer graphene yields the remote heteroepitaxial MR arrays. Transmission electron microscopy reveals the remote heteroepitaxial relation between ZnO MRs and the GaN substrate despite the existence of graphene interlayers in between them. Density-functional theory calculations show that charge transfer along the z-direction at graphene/c-GaN possibly attract adatoms leading to remote heteroepitaxy, implying the field permeability of graphene. Momordica charantia known as bitter melon is a representative medicinal plant reported to exhibit numerous pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, antitumor, and hypoglycemic actions. Although this plant has high ethnopharmacological value for treating inflammatory diseases, the molecular mechanisms by which it inhibits the inflammatory response are not fully understood. In this study, we aim to identify the anti-inflammatory mechanism of this plant. To this end, we studied the effects of its methanol extract (Mc-ME) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. Specifically, we evaluated nitric oxide (NO) production, mRNA expression of inflammatory genes, luciferase reporter gene activity, and putative molecular targets. Mc-ME blocked NO production in a dose-dependent manner in RAW264.7 cells; importantly, no cytotoxicity was observed. Moreover, the mRNA expression levels of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 were decreased by Mc-ME treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Luciferase assays and nuclear lysate immunoblotting analyses strongly indicated that Mc-ME decreases the levels of p65 [a nuclear factor (NF)-B subunit] and c-Fos [an activator protein (AP)-1 subunit]. Whole lysate immunoblotting assays, luciferase assays, and overexpression experiments suggested that transforming growth factor -activated kinase 1 (TAK1) is targeted by Mc-ME, thereby suppressing NF-B and AP-1 activity via downregulation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) and AKT. These results strongly suggest that Mc-ME exerts its anti-inflammatory activity by reducing the action of TAK1, which also affects the activation of NF-B and AP-1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydroquinone (HQ, 1,4-benzenediol) is a hydroxylated benzene metabolite with various biological activities, including anti-oxidative, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and antiinflammatory functions. However, the anti-cancer activity of HQ is not well understood. In this study, the in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity of HQ was investigated in various cancer cells and tumor-bearing mouse models. HQ significantly induced the death of A431, SYF, B16F10, and MDA-MB-231 cells and also showed a synergistic effect on A431 cell death with other anti-cancer agents, such as adenosine-20,30-dialdehyde and buthionine sulfoximine. In addition, HQ suppressed angiogenesis in fertilized chicken embryos. Moreover, HQ prevented lung metastasis of melanoma cells in mice in a dose-dependent manner without toxicity and adverse effects. HQ (10 mg/kg) also suppressed the generation of colon and reduced the thickness of colon tissues in azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate-injected mice. This study strongly suggests that HQ possesses in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer activity and provides evidence that HQ could be developed as an effective and safe anti-cancer drug. We have, for the first time, reported a highly efficient MP–(Cs0.4Rb0.6)PbBr3 luminescent material for application in optoelectronic devices. MP–(Cs0.4Rb0.6)PbBr3 with red-emitting Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphor is applied to an InGaN blue chip and compared with green-emitting (Cs0.4Rb0.6)PbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). MP–(Cs0.4Rb0.6)PbBr3 achieves a conversion efficiency of 80.9 lm W−1 under a forward-bias current of 150 mA. The fruit body of artificially cultivated Cordyceps bassiana has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. Although it has been suggested that the fruit body has neutraceutic and pharmaceutic biomaterial potential, the exact anti-inflammatory molecular mechanism has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated the immunopharmacologic activity of Cordyceps bassiana under in vitro conditions and investigated its anti-inflammatory mechanism. Water extract (Cm-WE) of the fruit body of artificially cultivated Cordyceps bassiana without polysaccharide fractions reduced the expression of the proinflammatory genes cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, interleukin (IL)-12, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and promoted the expression of the anti-inflammatory gene IL-10 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW264.7 cells. In addition, this fraction suppressed proliferation and interferon (IFN)- production in splenic T lymphocytes. Cm-WE blocked the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-B and activator protein (AP)-1 and their upstream inflammatory signaling cascades, including Syk, MEK, and JNK. Using kinase assays, Syk was identified as the target enzyme most strongly inhibited by Cm-WE. These results strongly suggest that Cm-WE suppresses inflammatory responses by inhibiting Syk kinase activity, with potential implications for novel neutraceutic and pharmaceutic biomaterials. This study investigates the effect of graphene oxide (GO) interlayer on electrical and electroluminescent (EL) performances of quantum-dot light emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) with poly( N-vinylcarbazole, PVK)/V2O5- x hole transport layers. The control QD-LEDs basically consist of multilayer heterojunctions of hole transport/injection PVK/V2O5- x bilayers, QD light emission layer, and electron transport ZnO nanoparticle layer, all of which are sequentially spin coated on indium-tin-oxide/glass substrates. The QD-LEDs with GO interlayer inserted between PVK and V2O5- x present superior electrical rectification and EL efficiency than those without GO interlayer. The hole-only devices with GO interlayer evidence higher hole conduction capability than those without GO by an order of magnitude. From ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, the hole transport enhancement in PVK/GO/V2O5- x heterojunctions is found to be responsible for reduced height of the highest hole barrier at QD/PVK interface from 1.74 to 0.75 eV by means of downshift of energy levels of PVK. Such energy level variation of PVK is discussed in terms of heterointerfacial orbital hybridization at PVK/V2O5- x, which are validated by diverse spectroscopies. The ability of GO interlayer to shift the PVK energy levels can be exploited for developing high-performance optoelectronics and electronics with hole transport organic/transition metal oxide heterojunctions. To address how interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 (IRAK1) is controlled by other enzymes activated by toll-like receptor (TLR) 4, we investigated the possibility that spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), a protein tyrosine kinase that is activated at an earlier stage during TLR4 activation, plays a central role in regulating the functional activation of IRAK1. Indeed, we found that overexpression of myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88), an adaptor molecule that drives TLR signaling, induced IRAK1 expression and that piceatannol, a Syk inhibitor, successfully suppressed the MyD88-dependent upregulation of IRAK1 under LPS treatment conditions. Interestingly, in Syk-knockout RAW264.7 cells, IRAK1 activity was almost completely blocked after LPS treatment, while providing a Syk-recovery gene to the knockout cells successfully restored IRAK1 expression. According to our measurements of IRAK1 mRNA levels, the transcriptional upregulation of IRAK1 was induced by LPS treatment between 4 and 60 min, and this can be suppressed in Syk knockout cells, providing an effect similar that that seen under piceatannol treatment. The overexpression of Syk reverses this effect and leads to a significantly higher IRAK1 mRNA level. Non-oxidative graphene (nOG) synthesized from natural graphite powder was modified with magnetite (Fe3O4) for removal of Cr(VI) and dyes in aqueous solution. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) on Fe3O4/nOG (M-nOG) was systematically investigated, and the simultaneous adsorption of Cr(VI) and dyes such as methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) was evaluated. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm of Cr(VI) were fitted well with pseudo-second-order model and Sips model, respectively. For the binary system, Cr(VI) removal was not affected with increasing the dye concentration, whereas the adsorption capacity of both MB and RhB was enhanced with increasing the concentrations of Cr(VI). Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) mediate the methylation of a number of protein substrates of arginine residues and serve critical functions in many cellular responses, including cancer development, progression, and aggressiveness, T-lymphocyte activation, and hepatic gluconeogenesis. There are nine members of the PRMT family, which are divided into 4 types (types I–IV). Although most PRMTs do not require posttranslational modification (PTM) to be activated, fine-tuning modifications, such as interactions between cofactor proteins, subcellular compartmentalization, and regulation of RNA, via micro-RNAs, seem to be required. Inflammation is an essential defense reaction of the body to eliminate harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens. However, chronic inflammation can eventually cause several types of diseases, including some cancers, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontitis. Therefore, inflammation responses should be well modulated. In this review, we briefly discuss the role of PRMTs in the control of inflammation. More specifically, we review the roles of four PRMTs (CARM1, PRMT1, PRMT5, and PRMT6) in modulating inflammation responses, particularly in terms of modulating the transcriptional factors or cofactors related to inflammation. Anthraquinone compounds are one of the abundant polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, and herbs. However, the in vivo anti-inflammatory activity and molecular mechanisms of anthraquinones have not been fully elucidated. We investigated the activity of anthraquinones using acute inflammatory and nociceptive experimental conditions. Anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid (9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxo-2-anthracenecarboxylic acid, AQCA), one of the major anthraquinones identified from Brazilian taheebo, ameliorated various inflammatory and algesic symptoms in EtOH/HCl- and acetylsalicylic acid- (ASA-) induced gastritis, arachidonic acid-induced edema, and acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing without displaying toxic profiles in body and organ weight, gastric irritation, or serum parameters. In addition, AQCA suppressed the expression of inflammatory genes such as cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2 in stomach tissues and lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) treated RAW264.7 cells. According to reporter gene assay and immunoblotting analyses, AQCA inhibited activation of the nuclear factor- (NF-) κB and activator protein- (AP-) 1 pathways by suppression of upstream signaling involving interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 4 (IRAK1), p38, Src, and spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk). Our data strongly suggest that anthraquinones such as AQCA act as potent anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive components in vivo, thus contributing to the immune regulatory role of fruits and herbs. The Cordyceps species has been a good source of compounds with anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Recently, we reported a novel compound (4-isopropyl-2,6-bis(1-phenylethyl)phenol, KTH-13) with anticancer activity isolated from Cordyceps bassiana and created several derivatives to increase its pharmacological activity. In this study, we tested one of the KTH-013 derivatives, 4-isopropyl-2,6-bis(1-phenylethyl)aniline 1 (KTH-13-AD1), with regard to anti-inflammatory activity under macrophage-mediated inflammatory conditions. KTH-13-AD1 clearly suppressed the production of nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and sodium nitroprusside- (SNP-) treated macrophage-like cells (RAW264.7 cells). Similarly, this compound also reduced mRNA expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), as analyzed by RT-PCR and real-time PCR. Interestingly, KTH-13-AD1 strongly diminished NF-κB-mediated luciferase activities and nuclear translocation of NF-κB family proteins. In accordance, KTH-13-AD1 suppressed the upstream signaling pathway of NF-κB activation, including IκBα, IKKα/β, AKT, p85/PI3K, and Src in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The autophosphorylation of Src and NF-κB observed during the overexpression of Src was also suppressed by KTH-13-AD1. These results strongly suggest that KTH-13-AD1 has strong anti-inflammatory features mediated by suppression of the Src/NF-κB regulatory loop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peptide-based therapeutics have received increasing attention in medical research. However, the local delivery of such therapeutics poses unique challenges. Self-assembling peptides that use decorated nanofibers are one approach by which these therapeutics may be delivered. We previously found that the self-assembling K5 peptide affects the anti-inflammatory response. The aim of the present study was to investigate another self-assembling peptide, S5. Unlike the K5 peptide which has a positive charge, the S5 peptide has a free hydroxyl (-OH) group. We first examined whether the S5 peptide regulates the inflammatory response in primary cells and found that the S5 peptide reduced the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) treated bone marrow-derived macrophages. Moreover, the S5 peptide significantly downregulated cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2, TNF-α , and interleukin- (IL-) 1β expression by blocking the nuclear translocation of c-Jun. Consistent with this finding, the S5 peptide diminished the activation of inflammatory signaling enzymes related to p38. The S5 peptide also inhibited the formation of the p38/c-Jun signaling complex in RAW264.7 cells. Similarly, p38 and MKK3/6 were inhibited by the S5 peptide in LPS-activated peritoneal macrophages. Even though a lot of reports have suggested the anti-inflammatory activity of kaempferol (KF) in macrophages, little is known about its exact anti-inflammatory mode of action and its immunopharmacological target molecules. In this study, we explored anti-inflammatory activity of KF in LPS-treated macrophages. In particular, molecular targets for KF action were identified by using biochemical and molecular biological analyses. KF suppressed the release of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), downregulated the cellular adhesion of U937 cells to fibronectin (FN), neutralized the generation of radicals, and diminished mRNA expression levels of inflammatory genes encoding inducible NO synthase (iNOS), TNF-α, and cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 2 in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) and sodium nitroprusside- (SNP-) treated RAW264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages. KF reduced NF-κB (p65 and p50) and AP-1 (c-Jun and c-Fos) levels in the nucleus and their transcriptional activity. Interestingly, it was found that Src, Syk, IRAK1, and IRAK4 responsible for NF-κB and AP-1 activation were identified as the direct molecular targets of KF by kinase enzyme assays and by measuring their phosphorylation patterns. In traditional Chinese medicine, Persicaria chinensis L. has been prescribed to cure numerous inflammatory disorders. We previously analyzed the bioactivity of the methanol extract of this plant (Pc-ME) against LPS-induced NO and PGE2 in RAW264.7 macrophages and found that it prevented HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcers in mice. The purpose of the current study was to explore the molecular mechanism by which Pc-ME inhibits activator protein- (AP-) 1 activation pathway and mediates its hepatoprotective activity. To investigate the putative therapeutic properties of Pc-ME against AP-1-mediated inflammation and hepatotoxicity, lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated RAW264.7 and U937 cells, a monocyte-like human cell line, and an LPS/D-galactosamine- (D-GalN-) induced acute hepatitis mouse model were employed. The expression of LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines including interleukin- (IL-) 1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was significantly diminished by Pc-ME. Moreover, Pc-ME reduced AP-1 activation and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation in both LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and differentiated U937 cells. Additionally, we highlighted the hepatoprotective and curative effects of Pc-ME pretreated orally in a mouse model of LPS/D-GalN-intoxicated acute liver injury by demonstrating the significant reduction in elevated serum AST and ALT levels and histological damage. The fabrication and design principles for using silver-nanowire (AgNW) networks as transparent electrodes for flexible film heaters are described. For best practice, AgNWs are synthesized with a small diameter and network structures of the AgNW films are optimized, demonstrating a favorably low surface resistivity in transparent layouts with a high figure-of-merit value. To explore their potential in transparent electrodes, a transparent film heater is constructed based on uniformly interconnected AgNW networks, which yields an effective and rapid heating of the film at low input voltages. In addition, the AgNW-based film heater is capable of accommodating a large amount of compressive or tensile strains in a completely reversible fashion, thereby yielding an excellent mechanical flexibility. We present a surface-micromachined capacitive microphone with a membrane center hole and back-plate supports. The proposed membrane center hole reduces air damping at the center of the membrane and increases the sensitivity and frequency response. The back-plate supports allow for a deep back-chamber and prevent deformation of the back-plate. The proposed microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) microphone is fabricated using fully CMOS-compatible processes. The fabricated MEMS microphone has a membrane 500 μm in diameter and a center hole 30 μm in diameter. A deep back-chamber with a depth of 100 μm is formed by the back-plate supporting structures. During fabrication, the residual stress of the membrane is minimized using PECVD silicon nitride inserted in the metal membrane. The measured residual stress of the sensing membrane is 14.8 MPa. Acoustic measurements show that the sensitivity of the microphone is -49.1 dBV Pa-1 @1 kHz at a 12 V dc bias voltage, which is in good agreement with the calculated value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hybrid materials of Fe3O4-decorated reduced graphene oxide (Fe3O4-RGO) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) were prepared by poly(ionic liquid)-mediated hybridization. In this hybrid material, poly(ionic liquid) was found to perform multiple roles for: (1) stabilizing Fe3O4-RGO against aggregation in the reaction medium, (2) transferring Fe3O4-RGO nanomaterials from aqueous into organic phase, and (3) associating Fe3O4-RGO nanomaterials with PEDOT. The hybrid materials of Fe3O4-RGO with PEDOT showed the lowest surface resistivity of 80 Ω sq−1 at an RGO-Fe3O4 loading of 1 wt %, and exhibited superparamagnetic behavior with an electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 22 dB. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report a new route for preparing electro-conductive composites based on reduced graphene oxide (RG-O) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). The composites were prepared by in situ polymerization of EDOT in aqueous mixture containing RG-O platelets modified with poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). In the synthetic process, PSS molecules stabilize RG-O in the aqueous phase and function as a polymerization template to hybridize PEDOT chains along RG-O platelets. Compared with the RG-O platelets, the resulting composites show an enhanced electrical conductivity of 9.2 S cm−1 with good thermal stability. A simple route to intriguing patterns for optical waveguides was demonstrated by controlled evaporative self-assembly (CESA) of confined microfluid. Silica ridge waveguides were fabricated by applying wet and dry etching based on stripe patterns formed by CESA. The La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films have been prepared on amorphous SiO2 substrates by a rf magnetron sputtering technique under various oxygen flow rates and rf powers at a relatively low substrate temperature of 350 °C. The effects of oxygen flow rate and rf power on their physical properties were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction results show that the growth orientation and crystallinity of the films were affected by rf power and oxygen flow rate. The electrical resistivity of the films was reduced with increasing oxygen flow rate and rf power due to enhanced {100} growth plane orientation and enlarged grain size of the films. In addition, a relatively high temperature coefficient of resistance value of -2.4% was obtained in the present investigation even with low deposition temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flexible capacitive humidity sensors are promising for low-cost, wearable, and radio frequency identification sensors, but their nonlinear response is an important issue for practical applications. Herein, the linearity of humidity response was controlled by surface water wettability and operating frequency of sensor, and the mechanism was explained in detail by surface water condensation. For a sensor with a Ag interdigitated electrode (IDE) on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate, the capacitance showed a small linear increase with humidity up to 70% RH but a large nonlinear increase in the higher range. The response linearity was increased by a hydrophobic surface treatment of self-assembled monolayer coating while it was decreased by an ultraviolet/ozone irradiation for hydrophilicity. It was also increased by increasing the frequency in the range of 1–100 kHz, more prominently on a more hydrophilic surface. Based on experiment and simulation, the increase in sensor capacitance was greatly dependent on the geometric pattern (e.g., size, number, and contact angle) and electrical permittivity of surface water droplets. A larger and more nonlinear humidity response resulted from a larger increase in the number of droplets with a smaller contact angle on a sensor surface with higher water wettability and also from a higher permittivity of water at a lower frequency.
