Mullite fiber felt is a promising material that may fulfill the demands of advanced flexible external thermal insulation blankets. However, research on the fabrication and performance of mullite fiber felt with high-temperature resistance and thermal stability is still lacking. In this work, mullite fibers were selected as raw materials for the fabrication of mullite fibrous porous materials with a three-dimensional net structure. Said materials' high-temperature resistance and thermal stability were investigated by assessing the effects of various heat treatment temperatures (1100 °C, 1300 °C, and 1500 °C) on the phase composition, microstructure, and performance of their products. When the heat treatment temperature was below 1300 °C, both the phase compositions and microstructures of products exhibited stability. The compressive rebound rate of the product before and after 1100 °C reached 92.9% and 84.5%, respectively. The backside temperature of the as-prepared products was 361.6 °C when tested at 1500 °C for 4000 s. The as-prepared mullite fibrous porous materials demonstrated excellent high-temperature resistance, thermal stability, thermal insulation performance, and compressive rebound capacity, thereby indicating the great potential of the as-prepared mullite fibrous porous materials in the form of mullite fiber felt within advanced flexible external thermal insulation blankets. Fibers crystallize and become brittle at high temperatures for a long time, so the surface coating must maintain long-lasting emission performance, which requires superior antioxidant properties of the high-emissivity fillers. To improve the radiation performance of the coating and the tensile strength of the fiber fabric, a double-layer coating with high emissivity was prepared on the surface of flexible aluminum silicate fiber fabric (ASFF) using MoSi2 and SiC as emissive agents. The incorporation of borosilicate glass into the outer coating during high-temperature oxidation of ZrB2 results in superior encapsulation of emitter particles, effectively filling the pores of the coating and significantly reducing the oxidation rate of MoSi2 and SiC. Furthermore, the addition of an intermediate ZrO2 layer enhances the fiber bundle's toughness. The obtained double-coated ASFF exhibits an exceptionally high tensile strength of 57.6 MPa and a high bond strength of 156.2 kPa. After being subjected to a 3 h heating process, the emissivity exhibits a minimal decrease of only 0.032, while still maintaining a high value above 0.9. The thermal insulation composites, consisting of a flexible ASFF matrix and a ZrB2-modified double-layer coating, exhibit significant potential for broad applications in the field of thermal protection. Ceramic fiber thread is one of the key components in flexible external thermal insulation blankets, and it has been applied in various fields as a flexible ceramic fibrous material with excellent deformability and high-temperature resistance. However, ceramic fiber threads are often subjected to reciprocating friction motion at specific bending angles, making them highly susceptible to abrade and fracture. Enhancing the abrasion resistance performance of ceramic fiber threads under bending conditions is the future trend and remains a significant challenge. Hence, we design and construct a novel polyurethane-modified coating on the ceramic fiber threads to improve their abrasion resistance performance. The effects of the types and concentrations of modifiers on the microstructure, abrasion resistance property, and tensile property of ceramic fiber threads are systematically investigated. The ceramic fiber threads, after modification with hexamethylene diisocyanate waterborne polyurethane (HDI-WPU) with a concentration of 3%, exhibit excellent abrasion resistance properties. The number of friction cycles at fracture of the modified ceramic fiber thread is more than three times, and the tensile strength is more than one and a half times, that of the original ceramic fiber thread, demonstrating the great potential of the HDI-WPU modifier for enhancing the abrasion resistance performance of ceramic fiber threads. Experiment and numerical simulation are integrated to investigate the effects of pore structure on physical properties in reef-shoal carbonate samples from the Tarim Basin. The results show three correlation trends between pore structure parameters and physical properties, which closely depend on the pore structure type. The acoustic velocity of the fractured-vuggy type (Structure I) is mainly affected by porosity and pore shape, whereas the fractured and tight types (Structures II and III) are controlled by the pore connection and fractures, respectively. For permeability, the main controlling factor of Structures I and III is porosity, whereas that of Structure II is the volume fraction of fractures. From the pore structure classification, combining pore structure parameters and porosity significantly improves the predictions of acoustic velocity and permeability, confirming that pore structure classification should be prioritized and determining the main controlling factors is critical for the improvement of acoustic velocity and permeability predictions. Fibrous porous materials are one of the most commonly used high-temperature insulation materials because of their high porosity and low thermal conductivity. Due to their wide applications in the aerospace and energy industries, the investigation of high-elastic thermally insulating porous materials has attracted increasing attention. In order to improve the elasticity of fibrous porous materials, quartz fibers with high aspect ratio were used as matrix, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) was selected as dispersant. We innovatively reported that a unique three-dimensional skeleton structure was constructed by adjusting the dispersion of fibers in the slurry, and the lightweight, thermal insulating and elastic SiO2 fibrous porous material was then prepared by the compression molding method. The characterization results of zeta potential and absorbance showed that the addition of SHMP was an effective method to enhance the dispersibility of quartz fibers in the slurry. SiO2 fibrous porous materials with 0.4 wt% SHMP content exhibited an ideal three-dimensional skeleton structure, which endowed the porous material with high porosity (89.39%), low density (0.04751 g/cm3), and low thermal conductivity (0.0356 W·m−1·K−1). The three-dimensional skeleton structure formed by overlapping fibers with high aspect ratios endowed the porous material with excellent elasticity. SiO2 fibrous porous materials with 0.4 wt% SHMP content could undergo large strains of 30% and achieved a resilience ratio of 81.69% under the 30th compression cycle. Recently, many of the world's major river deltas have been sinking, making them increasingly vulnerable to floods and storm surges, salinization and permanent inundation. For the Yellow River delta, annual subsidence rates of several to dozens of centimeters have been reported in the past few years. The extraction of a considerable amount of groundwater due to continuous pumping is suggested as the main driver of the groundwater depression cone. Despite its scale and severity, methods to quantify subsidence are scarce. We introduce a soil mechanics approach to quantify subsidence due to the compaction of soft soil. The largest reduction in soft soil thickness, which is more than 2.6 m, occurred in the salt field area to the north of the Yellow River. Furthermore, by estimating the primary consolidation of soft soil, the subsidence caused by groundwater exploitation is quantified. In the coastal area of the delta, due to excessive exploitation of shallow underground brine resources, the maximum accumulated subsidence is as high as 2 m. Since the natural consolidation of these deltaic sediments has ended, if the current groundwater exploitation intensity is maintained, major subsidence disasters, such as subsidence depressions and ground fissures, will occur. Sea ice export through the Baffin Bay plays a vital role in modulating the sea ice cover variability in the Labrador Sea. In this study, satellite-derived sea ice products are used to obtain the sea ice area flux (SIAF) through the three passages in the Baffin Bay (referred to as A, B, and C for the north, middle, and south passages, respectively). The spatial variability of the monthly sea ice drift in the Baffin Bay is presented. The interannual variability and trends in SIAF via the three passages are outlined. The connection to several large-scale atmospheric circulation modes is assessed. Over the period of 1988–2015, the average annual (October to the following September) SIAF amounts to 555×103 km2, 642×103 km2, and 551×103 km2 through Passages A, B, and C, respectively. These quantities are less than that observed through the Fram Strait (FS, 707×103 km2) of the corresponding period. The positive trends in annual SIAF, on the order of 53.1×103 km2/(10 a) and 43.2×103 km2/(10 a) (significant at the 95% confidence level), are identified at Passages A and B, respectively. The trend of the south passage (C), however, is slightly negative (−13.3×103 km2/(10 a), not statistically significant). The positive trends in annual SIAF through the Passages A and B are primarily attributable to the significant increases after 2000. The connection between the Baffin Bay sea ice export and the North Atlantic Oscillation is not significant over the studied period. By contrast, the association with the cross-gate sea level pressure difference is robust in the Baffin Bay (R equals 0.69 to 0.71, depending on the passages considered), but relatively weaker than that over FS (R=0.74). Metal-doped polymer derived ceramics (PDCs) exhibits multifunctional properties due to the introduction of special metal element; however as one of the cheapest metal element carriers, metal inorganic salts have rarely been reported for the fabrication of metal-doped PDCs. In this article, a novel hydrophilic photosensitive γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy modified polyhydroxymethylsiloxane preceramic polymer was firstly synthesised and three different metal-doped SiOC ceramic lattices with a strut thickness of 200 μm were successfully fabricated using inorganic metal salts as the metal source by digital light processing. The photosensitive coefficient, initial photocuring coefficient and the corresponding working curves were employed to evaluate the photocurable ability of preceramic polymers with different recipes. Results showed that both the metal-containing polymer lattices and the metal-doped SiOC ceramic lattices exhibited high-resolution microstructure and homogeneous metal element distribution, indicating that the inorganic metal salt is an effective metal source for the fabrication of metal-doped PDCs. Abstract: Boron nitride (BN) fibers were fabricated on a large scale through the melt‐drawn technique from low‐cost boric acid, NH3, and N2. Evolution of structure and properties of BN fibers during the fabrication process was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanical properties of BN fibers were tested and analyzed. The results shown that both the mechanical properties and the crystallinity of BN fibers slightly increased with the temperature from 450 to 850°C, due to the combination of the fused‐B3N3. For BN fibers heat‐treated at 850 or 1000°C, the tensile strength (σR) and elastic modulus (E) were strongly increased because of the increase in crystallization of the BN phase. The meso‐hexagonal BN fibers with a diameter of 5.0 μm were fabricated at 1750°C, of which the tensile strength (σR) and elastic modulus (E) are 1200 MPa and 85 GPa, respectively. Two different morphologies of ZnO (lotus-shaped, rod-shaped) and ZnO/PVDF composite materials were prepared. The morphologies of ZnO and composite materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravimetry (TG), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were also used to characterize the chemical structures and phase composites of ZnO and ZnO/PVDF composite materials. Breakdown voltage, dielectric constant and dielectric loss of ZnO/PVDF composite materials were also tested. Microstructure analysis showed that ZnO nanoparticles dispersed uniformly in the matrix. And the dielectric constant expresses a significantly improvement while the dielectric loss and breakdown voltage expresses no significant change. By combing satellite-derived ice motion and concentration with ice thickness fields from a popular model PIOMAS we obtain the estimates of ice volume flux passing the Fram Strait over the 1979-2012 period. Since current satellite and field observations for sea ice thickness are limited in time and space, the use of PIOMAS is expected to fill the gap by providing temporally continued ice thickness fields. Calculated monthly volume flux exhibits a prominent annual cycle with the peak record in March (roughly 145 km/month) and the trough in August (10 km/month). Annual ice volume flux (1 132 km) is primarily attributable to winter (October through May) outflow (approximately 92%). Uncertainty in annual ice volume export is estimated to be 55 km (or 5.7%). Our results also verified the extremely large volume flux appearing between late 1980s and mid- 1990s. Nevertheless, no clear trend was found in our volume flux results. Ice motion is the primary factor in the determination of behavior of volume flux. Ice thickness presented a general decline trend may partly enhance or weaken the volume flux trend. Ice concentration exerted the least influences on modulating trends and variability in volume flux. Moreover, the linkage between winter ice volume flux and three established Arctic atmospheric schemes were examined. Single-crystalline Si3N4 nanobelts (NBs) were successfully synthesized in a size-controlled manner using graphite, nanosilicon and nanosilica powders in N2 gas. The average width of Si3N4 NBs increased with an increase in the flow rate of N2 gas, with 264 nm at 50 ml min−1, 295 nm at 100 ml min−1 and 341 nm at 200 ml min−1. The room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed that the synthesized α-Si3N4 nanobelts with three different sizes all had two strong emission peaks located in the yellow and red spectral range, which could be mainly attributed to the incorporation of a small amount of Al in the NBs, and the larger size could also lead to a slight red shift. The Young's modulus of Si3N4 NBs was measured with a hybrid scanning electron microscope/scanning probe microscope (SEM/SPM) system by means of the modulated nanoindentation method. The Young's modulus of Si3N4 NBs strongly depended on their size, decreasing from about 548.6 to 455.1 GPa, which can be explained by surface effects and defect-related effects arising due to their nanometer size. The culture of suspended kelp, such as Laminaria japonica Aresch, has arisen in nearshore areas for approximately 30 years since the 1980s. This long-term activity has significant impact on the regional hydrodynamic and sedimentary environments. In this study the impact was investigated, based on synchronized multi-station data from continuous observations made within and around the culture area. In total, three current velocity profiles were identified inside and on the landward side of the culture area. Based on the current velocity profiles we calculated the boundary layer parameters, the fluxes of erosion/deposition, and the rate of sediment transport in different times at each observation site. Comparison between culture and non-culture periods showed that the presence of suspended kelp caused the reduction in the average flow velocity by approximately 49.5%, the bottom friction velocity by 24.8%, the seabed roughness length by 62.7%, and the shear stress and the flux of resuspended sediment by approximately 50%. From analyses in combination with the corresponding vertical variation of the suspended sediment distribution, it is revealed that the lifted sediments by resuspension is mixed with the upper suspended material, which will modify the regional distribution of suspended sediment. These changes in flow structure and sediment movement will accelerate seabed siltation, which corresponds to the changes in seabed erosion/deposition. However, under the influences of the seasonal changes in kelp growth the magnitude of change with the seabed siltation was not obvious inside the culture area, but a fundamental change was apparent around the culture area. Suspended sediment particle size distribution characteristics not only represent the state of being of the suspended particle, but can also be used to imply the procedure and strength of the hydro-dynamics and re-suspension. Mie theory is used to build the suspended sediment average grain size retrieval model. Results show that suspended sediment backscattering coefficient and the cube of average grain size has ideal linear relationship, with the determination coefficients of the fitting equations all above 0. 93 at four bands (412 nm, 443 nm, 555 nm, 667 nm). The maximal and minimal fitting errors are 16. 632 2% (412 nm) and 20. 314 3% (667 nm), respectively. The suspended sediment backscattering coefficient in the study area was estimated using the quasi-analytical algorithm (QAA) from a MODIS remote sensing reflectance image. Surface water average grain size was estimated by combining the retrieval values of the suspended sediment concentration and the suspended sediment backscattering coefficient. The result shows that values estimated from the inversion model are in good agreement with experimental data from near-shore areas with high suspended sediment content. This study can provide significant supporting data for deep research on land-ocean interaction, marine ecological system evolution, and marine participates in the global carbon cycle. A novel core-shell structure Ag@AlO nano-particles were synthesized and doped into polyimide as conductive fillers to prepare the composite films with high dielectric properties and low dielectric loss. The morphology and structures of the Ag@AlO nano-particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-visible spectroscopy. All the results proved that the Ag@AlO nano-particles had a typical core-shell structure, for the Ag particles were coated by AlO shell and the average sizes of Ag@AlO particles were between 30 to 150 nm. The as-prepared Ag@AlO nanoparticles were doped into the polyimide with different mass fractions to fabricate the Ag@AlO/PI composite films via in-situ polymerization process. SEM analysis of composite films showed that the Ag@AlO nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in polyimide matrix with nanoscale. As dielectric materials for electronic packaging systems, the Ag@AlO/PI composites exhibited appropriate mechanical properties and enhanced dielectric properties, including greatly enhanced dielectric constant and just a slight increase in dielectric loss. Settling particulate matter (SPM) is widely used to describe the sedimentary environment. We have investigated here the SPM collected with a time-series sediment trap in the Heini Bay, Weihai, Shandong Peninsula, China, during the super typhoon Muifa (August 2011, maximum wind speed 55 m/s). Meteorological and hydrological parameters were measured for 18 days. By analyzing the particle flux, grain size, and loss-on-ignition (organic matter content) of SPM we found dramatic changes in these parameters, induced by typhoon Muifa for about 6 days. With the arrival of typhoon, the daily SPM fluxes increased sharply to the maximum at 76.4 g/(m·d) on the first day and this increase is about 9 times of the normal value, and after 6 days the SPM decreased to the normal value gradually. Other parameters, such as grain size of SPM and organic matter also experienced similar changes. Using these SPM parameters, we divided the settling progress by cluster analysis into three phases: strong (for 3 days), weak (for 3 days), and zero typhoon impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A modified algorithm taking into account the first year (FY) and multiyear (MY) ice densities is used to derive a sea ice thickness from freeboard measurements acquired by satellite altimetry ICESat (2003-2008). Estimates agree with various independent in situ measurements within 0.21 m. Both the fall and winter campaigns see a dramatic extent retreat of thicker MY ice that survives at least one summer melting season. There were strong seasonal and interannual variabilities with regard to the mean thickness. Seasonal increases of 0.53 m for FY the ice and 0.29 m for the MY ice between the autumn and the winter ICESat campaigns, roughly 4-5 month separation, were found. Interannually, the significant MY ice thickness declines over the consecutive four ICESat winter campaigns (2005-2008) leads to a pronounced thickness drop of 0.8 m in MY sea ice zones. No clear trend was identified from the averaged thickness of thinner, FY ice that emerges in autumn and winter and melts in summer. Uncertainty estimates for our calculated thickness, caused by the standard deviations of multiple input parameters including freeboard, ice density, snow density, snow depth, show large errors more than 0.5 m in thicker MY ice zones and relatively small standard deviations under 0.5 m elsewhere. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis is implemented to determine the separate impact on the thickness estimate in the dependence of an individual input variable as mentioned above. The results show systematic bias of the estimated ice thickness appears to be mainly caused by the variations of freeboard as well as the ice density whereas the snow density and depth brings about relatively insignificant errors. The power law particle size distribution (PSD) slope parameter is commonly used to characterize sediment fluxes, resuspension, aggregates, and settling rates in coastal and estuarine waters. However, particle size distribution metrics are also very useful for understanding sediment source and dynamic processes. In this study, a method was proposed to employ the particle size parameters commonly used in sedimentary geology (average particle size (ø), sorting, skewness, and kurtosis) as indicators of changes in sediment dynamic processes, and MODIS images were used to estimate these parameters. The particle size parameters were estimated using a Mie scattering model, Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (QAA) analysis algorithm, and least squares QR decomposition (LSQR) solution method based on the relationship between the power law distribution of the suspended particles and their optical scattering properties. The estimates were verified by field measurements in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea regions of China. This method provided good estimates of the average particle size (ø), sorting, and kurtosis. A greater number of wavebands (39) was associated with more accurate particle size distribution curves. Furthermore, the method was used to monitor changes in suspended particulate matter in the vicinity of the Heini Bay of China before and after the passage of a strong storm in August 2011. The particle size parameters represented the influence of a strong typhoon on the distribution of the near-shore sediment and, together with the PSD slope, comprehensively reflected the changes in the near-shore suspended particulate matter. This method not only established the relationship between remote sensing monitoring and the historical sediment record, it also extends the power law model to the application of sediment source and dynamic processes in coastal waters.
