We recently developed a dynamically coupled hydrological‐ocean modeling system that provides seamless coverage across the land‐ocean continuum during hurricane‐induced compound flooding. This study introduced a local inertial equation and a diagonal flow algorithm to the overland routing of the coupled system's hydrology model (WRF‐Hydro). Using Hurricane Florence (2018) as a test case, the performance of the coupled model was significantly improved, evidenced by its enhanced capability of capturing backwater and increased water level simulation accuracy and stability. With four model experiments, we present a framework to detangle, define, and quantify compound and nonlinear effects. The results revealed that the flood peaks in the lower Cape Fear River Basin and the coastal waters were contributed by inland flooding and storm surge, respectively. These two processes had comparable contributions to the flooding in the Cape Fear River Estuary. The compound effect was identified when the flood levels resulting from the combination of land and ocean processes surpassed those caused by an individual process alone. The compound effect during Hurricane Florence exhibited limited impact on flood peaks, primarily due to the time lag between the peaks of the storm surge and the inland flooding. In the period between the two peaks, the compound effect was salient and significantly impacted the magnitude and variation of the flood level. The nonlinear effect, defined as the difference between the compound flood level and the superposition of storm surge and inland flooding water levels, reduced flood levels in the river channels while increasing flood levels on the floodplain. We've devised a hydrological‐ocean model that effectively covers such events. A three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic–biogeochemical model with multiple nutrient and plankton functional groups was developed and adapted to the Gulf of Mexico to investigate the role of nutrients and the complexity of plankton community in dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics. A 15-year hindcast was achieved covering the period of 2006–2020. Extensive model validation against in situ data demonstrates that the model was capable of reproducing vertical distributions of DO and spatial distributions of bottom DO concentration, as well as their interannual variations. The study demonstrates that bottom DO dynamics and hypoxia evolution are significantly influenced by both physical processes and local biochemistry, with sedimentary oxygen consumption and vertical diffusion identified as key contributors. Summer hydrodynamics play a critical role in nutrient distribution and limitation: a notable expansion of Si limitation was simulated when coastal currents shifted eastward or northward. This effect, especially pronounced on the western part of the Louisiana–Texas shelf, underscores the importance of nutrient limitation in shaping DO dynamics. The model identifies a bi-peak primary production pattern in spring and early summer, aligned with satellite chlorophyll a variations, attributed to the complexity of the plankton community and interactions among different plankton groups. Extreme precipitation during Hurricane Florence, which made landfall in North Carolina in September 2018, led to breaches of hog waste lagoons, coal ash pits, and wastewater facilities. In the weeks following the storm, freshwater discharge carried pollutants, sediment, organic matter, and debris to the coastal ocean, contributing to beach closures, algae blooms, hypoxia, and other ecosystem impacts. Here, the ocean pathways of land‐sourced contaminants following Hurricane Florence are investigated using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) with a river point source with fixed water properties from a hydrologic model (WRF‐Hydro) of the Cape Fear River Basin, North Carolina's largest watershed. Patterns of contaminant transport in the coastal ocean are quantified with a finite duration tracer release based on observed flooding of agricultural and industrial facilities. A suite of synthetic events also was simulated to investigate the sensitivity of the river plume transport pathways to river discharge and wind direction. The simulated Hurricane Florence discharge event led to westward (downcoast) transport of contaminants in a coastal current, along with intermittent storage and release of material in an offshore (bulge) or eastward (upcoast) region near the river mouth, modulated by alternating upwelling and downwelling winds. The river plume patterns led to a delayed onset and long duration of contaminants affecting beaches 100 km to the west, days to weeks after the storm. Maps of the onset and duration of hypothetical water quality hazards for a range of weather conditions may provide guidance to managers on the timing of swimming/shellfishing advisories and water quality sampling. We used a numerical ocean model to simulate the Cape Fear River plume carrying a dye representing contaminants following Hurricane Florence. The plume initially traveled west hugging the coast due to Earth's rotation, alternately spreading east or offshore due to changes in the direction of winds blowing on the ocean. The river plume patterns led to a delayed onset and long duration of contaminants affecting beaches far down the coast, days to weeks after the storm. We also simulated several scenarios with different river discharge and winds. This information could help guide managers on when to perform water quality sampling and issue swimming or shellfishing advisories. Hurricane‐induced compound flooding is a combined result of multiple processes, including overland runoff, precipitation, and storm surge. This study presents a dynamical coupling method applied at the boundary of a processes‐based hydrological model (the hydrological modeling extension package of the Weather Research and Forecasting model) and the two‐dimensional Regional Ocean Modeling System on the platform of the Coupled‐Ocean‐Atmosphere‐Wave‐Sediment Transport Modeling System. The coupled model was adapted to the Cape Fear River Basin and adjacent coastal ocean in North Carolina, United States, which suffered severe losses due to the compound flood induced by Hurricane Florence in 2018. The model's robustness was evaluated via comparison against observed water levels in the watershed, estuary, and along the coast. With a series of sensitivity experiments, the contributions from different processes to the water level variations in the estuary were untangled and quantified. Based on the temporal evolution of wind, water flux, water level, and water‐level gradient, compound flooding in the estuary was categorized into four stages: (I) swelling, (II) local‐wind‐dominated, (III) transition, and (IV) overland‐runoff‐dominated. A nonlinear effect was identified between overland runoff and water level in the estuary, which indicated the estuary could serve as a buffer for surges from the ocean side by reducing the maximum surge height. Water budget analysis indicated that water in the estuary was flushed 10 times by overland runoff within 23 days after Florence's landfall. We adapted the WRF‐Hydro modelling system to Hurricane Florence (2018) and performed a series of diagnostic experiments to assess the influence of initial soil moisture and precipitation magnitude on flood simulation over the Cape Fear River basin in the United States. Model results suggest that: (1) The modulation effect of initial soil moisture on the flood peak is non‐linear and weakens as precipitation magnitude increases. There is a threshold value of the soil saturation, below and above which the sensitivity of flood peak to the soil moisture differentiates substantially; (2) For model spin‐up, streamflow needs longer time to reach the 'practical' equilibrium (10%) than the soil moisture and latent heat flux. The model uncertainty from spin‐up can propagate through the hydrometeorological modelling chain and get amplified into the flood peak; (3) For ensemble flood modelling with a hydrometeorological system, modelling uncertainty is dominated by the precipitation forecast. Coupled physical–biogeochemical models can fill the spatial and temporal gap in ocean carbon observations. Challenges of applying a coupled physical–biogeochemical model in the regional ocean include the reasonable prescription of carbon model boundary conditions, lack of in situ observations, and the oversimplification of certain biogeochemical processes. In this study, we applied a coupled physical–biogeochemical model (Regional Ocean Modelling System, ROMS) to the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and achieved an unprecedented 20-year high-resolution (5 km, 1/22∘) hindcast covering the period of 2000 to 2019. The biogeochemical model incorporated the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pools and the formation and dissolution of carbonate minerals. The biogeochemical boundaries were interpolated from NCAR's CESM2-WACCM-FV2 solution after evaluating the performance of 17 GCMs in the GoM waters. Model outputs included carbon system variables of wide interest, such as p CO 2 , pH, aragonite saturation state (ΩArag), calcite saturation state (ΩCalc), CO 2 air–sea flux, and carbon burial rate. The model's robustness is evaluated via extensive model–data comparison against buoys, remote-sensing-based machine learning (ML) products, and ship-based measurements. A reassessment of air–sea CO 2 flux with previous modeling and observational studies gives us confidence that our model provides a robust and updated CO 2 flux estimation, and NGoM is a stronger carbon sink than previously reported. Model results reveal that the GoM water has been experiencing a ∼ 0.0016 yr -1 decrease in surface pH over the past 2 decades, accompanied by a ∼ 1.66 µ atm yr -1 increase in sea surface p CO 2. The air–sea CO 2 exchange estimation confirms in accordance with several previous models and ocean surface p CO 2 observations that the river-dominated northern GoM (NGoM) is a substantial carbon sink, and the open GoM is a carbon source during summer and a carbon sink for the rest of the year. Sensitivity experiments are conducted to evaluate the impacts of river inputs and the global ocean via model boundaries. The NGoM carbon system is directly modified by the enormous carbon inputs (∼ 15.5 Tg C yr -1 DIC and ∼ 2.3 Tg C yr -1 DOC) from the Mississippi–Atchafalaya River System (MARS). Additionally, nutrient-stimulated biological activities create a ∼ 105 times higher particulate organic matter burial rate in NGoM sediment than in the case without river-delivered nutrients. The carbon system condition of the open ocean is driven by inputs from the Caribbean Sea via the Yucatan Channel and is affected more by thermal effects than biological factors. This study presents a novel ensemble regression model for forecasts of the hypoxic area (HA) in the Louisiana–Texas (LaTex) shelf. The ensemble model combines a zero-inflated Poisson generalized linear model (GLM) and a quasi-Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) and considers predictors with hydrodynamic and biochemical features. Both models were trained and calibrated using the daily hindcast (2007–2020) by a three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic–biogeochemical model embedded in the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Compared to the ROMS hindcasts, the ensemble model yields a low root-mean-square error (RMSE) (3256 km 2), a high R2 (0.7721), and low mean absolute percentage biases for overall (29 %) and peak HA prediction (25 %). When compared to the shelf-wide cruise observations from 2012 to 2020, our ensemble model provides a more accurate summer HA forecast than any existing forecast models with a high R2 (0.9200); a low RMSE (2005 km 2); a low scatter index (15 %); and low mean absolute percentage biases for overall (18 %), fair-weather summer (15 %), and windy-summer (18 %) predictions. To test its robustness, the model is further applied to a global forecast model and produces HA prediction from 2012–2020 with the adjusted predictors from the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). In addition, model sensitivity tests suggest an aggressive riverine nutrient reduction strategy (92 %) is needed to achieve the HA reduction goal of 5000 km 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a novel ensemble regression model was developed for hypoxic area (HA) forecast in the Louisiana– Texas (LaTex) Shelf. A promising HA forecast is provided by the ensemble model with a low RMSE (3,204 km2), a high R2 (0.8005), and a precise performance in capturing hypoxic area peaks in the summers. To test its robustness, the model was further applied to a global forecast model and produces HA prediction from 2019 to 2020 with the adjusted predictors from the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Predicted HA shows a high agreement with the ROMS hindcast time series (RMSE=4,571 km2, R2=0.8178). Our model can also predict the magnitude and onsets of summer HA peaks in both 2019 and 2020 with high accuracy. To the best of our knowledge, this ensemble model is by far the first one providing fast and accurate daily HA predictions for the LaTex Shelf while considering both hydrodynamic and biochemical effects. Sea level rise and intense hurricane events make the East and Gulf Coasts of the United States increasingly vulnerable to flooding, which necessitates the development of computational models for accurate water level simulation in these areas to safeguard the coastal wellbeing. With this regard, a model framework for water level simulation over coastal transition zone during hurricane events is built in this study. The model takes advantage of the National Water Model's strength in simulating rainfall–runoff process, and D‐Flow Flexible Mesh's ability to support unstructured grid in hydrodynamic processes simulation with storm surges/tides information from the Advanced CIRCulation model. We apply the model on the Delaware Estuary to simulate extreme water level and to investigate the contribution of different physical components to it during Hurricane Isabel (2003). The model shows satisfactory performance with an average Willmott skill of 0.965. Model results suggest that storm surge is the most dominating component of extreme water level with an average contribution of 78.16%, second by the astronomical tide with 19.52%. While the contribution of rivers is mainly restricted to the upper part of the estuary upstream of Schuylkill River, local wind‐induced water level is more pronounced with values larger than 0.2 m over most part of the estuary. Coupled physical-biogeochemical models can significantly reduce uncertainties in estimating the spatial and temporal patterns of the ocean carbon system. Model results reveal that the GoM water has been experiencing an ~ 0.0016 yr-1 decrease in surface pH over the past two decades, accompanied by a ~ 1.66 µatm yr-1 increase in sea surface pCO2. The air-sea CO2 exchange estimation confirms that the riverdominated northern GoM is a substantial carbon sink. The open water of GoM, affected mainly by the thermal effect, is a carbon source during summer and a carbon sink for the rest of the year. Rivers and wetlands are a major source of terrestrial derived carbon for coastal ocean margins. This results in a net loss of terrestrial carbon into the shelf water and their subsequent transport to interior ocean basin. This study investigates the transport of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in the surface‐mixed layer of Louisiana Shelf in northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) adjacent to the Wax Lake Delta (WLD) and Barataria Bay (BB), which represent contrasting net land gain and net land loss areas in this region. DIC samples were collected, in conjunction with short‐lived radium isotopes 224Ra (t1/2 = 3.66 days) and 223Ra (t1/2 = 11.43 days) samples during June and September 2019, to quantify shelf transport of DIC in the surface‐mixed layer during period of high and low river flow, respectively. Radium distribution implied shelf mixing rates of 140–6,759 and 63–2,724 m2 s−1 for WLD and BB regions, respectively, with more than tenfold decrease in rates between the two seasons. Net shelf transport of DIC was found to be highest for the WLD region in June, highlighting the importance of freshwater discharge in exporting DIC. An upscaling of our study for the entire Louisiana Shelf indicates that 1.54–20.19 × 109 mol C d−1 transported in June 2019 and 0.34–8.12 × 109 mol C d−1 in the form of DIC was exported across the shallow region of the shelf during high and low river flow seasons, representing an important source of DIC to the NGOM. In the current study, we used naturally occurring short‐lived radium radioisotopes to understand the transport of dissolved inorganic carbon across the Louisiana Shelf in northern Gulf of Mexico. This region receives a large amount of dissolved carbon from the Mississippi‐Atchafalaya River System as well as coastal wetland loss, but the fate and transport of this carbon is not well documented. Our study indicates that the DIC transport across the Louisiana Shelf can vary from 0.02–0.24 to 0.03–0.09 Tg C d−1 during high and low river flow seasons, representing an important source of DIC to the Gulf of Mexico that is predominately controlled by river discharge. Current predictions suggest that Mississippi‐Atchafalaya River discharge to coastal waters may increase by up to 60% by 2090, which would have dramatic impact on the lateral export of both carbon and nutrients to the ocean interior in the future. We introduced a sediment-induced light attenuation algorithm into a biogeochemical model of the Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere–Wave–Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. A fully coupled ocean–atmospheric–sediment–biogeochemical simulation was carried out to assess the impact of sediment-induced light attenuation on primary production in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the passage of Hurricane Gustav in 2008. When compared with model results without sediment-induced light attenuation, our new model showed a better agreement with satellite data on both the magnitude of nearshore chlorophyll concentration and the spatial distribution of offshore bloom. When Hurricane Gustav approached, resuspended sediment shifted the inner shelf ecosystem from a nutrient-limited one to a light-limited one. Only 1 week after Hurricane Gustav's landfall, accumulated nutrients and a favorable optical environment induced a posthurricane algal bloom in the top 20 m of the water column, while the productivity in the lower water column was still light-limited due to slow-settling sediment. Corresponding with the elevated offshore NO3 flux (38.71 mmol N m -1 s -1) and decreased chlorophyll flux (43.10 mg m -1 s -1), the outer shelf posthurricane bloom should have resulted from the cross-shelf nutrient supply instead of the lateral dispersed chlorophyll. Sensitivity tests indicated that sediment light attenuation efficiency affected primary production when sediment concentration was moderately high. Wave‐supported fluid mud (WSFM) plays an important role in sediment downslope transport on the continental shelves. In this study, we incorporated WSFM processes in the wave boundary layer (WBL) into the Community Sediment Transport Modeling System (CSTMS) on the platform of the Coupled Ocean‐Atmosphere‐Wave‐and‐Sediment Transport modeling system (COAWST). The WSFM module was introduced between the bottommost water layer and top sediment layer, which accounted for the key sediment exchange processes (e.g., resuspension, vertical settling, diffusion, and horizontal advection) at the water‐WBL and WBL‐sediment bed boundaries. To test its robustness, we adapted the updated model (CSTMS + WBL) to the Atchafalaya shelf in the northern Gulf of Mexico and successfully reproduced the sediment dynamics in March 2008, when active WSFM processes were reported. Compared with original CSTMS results, including WSFM module weakened the overall intensity of sediment resuspension, and the CSTMS + WBL model simulated a lutocline between the WBL and overlying water due to the formation of WSFM. Downslope WSFM transport resulted in offshore deposition (>4 cm), which greatly changed the net erosion/deposition pattern on the inner shelf off the Chenier Plain. WSFM flux was comparable with suspended sediment flux (SSF) off the Atchafalaya Bay, and it peaked along the Chenier Plain coast where wave activities were strong and the bathymetric slope was steep. The influence of fluvial sediment supply on sediment dynamics was limited in the Atchafalaya Bay. Sensitivity tests of free settling, flocculation, and hindered settling effects suggested that sediments were transported further offshore due to reduced settling velocity in the WBL once fluid mud was formed. Although sediment concentration in the WBL was sensitive to surface sediment critical shear stress, cohesive bed behavior was less important in WSFM dynamics when compared with strong hydrodynamic during cold fronts. Plain Language Summary: Fluid mud is an intermediate stage between a consolidated seafloor and dilute fine sediment suspension. Its high density (>10 g/L) and downslope movement are important in sediment transport over the inner continental shelf (water depths < 15 m). In this study we adopted a numerical model to simulate fluid mud transport on the Atchafalaya continental shelf in coastal Louisiana. We found that fluid mud formed during the passages of cold fronts, and its transport contributed to offshore sediment deposition. This downslope sediment transport process was more affected by the settling velocity of sediment particles rather than fluvial supply from the Atchafalaya River or sediment consolidation on the seabed. We introduce a sediment-induced light attenuation algorithm into the biogeochemical model of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). A fully coupled ocean-atmospheric-sediment-biogeochemical simulation is carried out to assess the impact of sediment-induced light attenuation on primary production in the northern Gulf of Mexico during Hurricane Gustav in 2008. The new model shows a better agreement with satellite data on both the magnitude of nearshore chlorophyll concentration and the distribution of offshore bloom. When Gustav approaches, resuspended sediments shift the inner shelf ecosystem from a nutrient-limited one to light-limited. One week after Gustav's landfall, accumulated nutrient and favorable optical environment induces a post-hurricane algal bloom in the top 20 m of water column, while the productivity in the lower column is still light-limited due to unsettled sediment. Corresponding with the elevated offshore NO3 flux (38.71 mmol N/m/s) and decreased chlorophyll flux (43.10 mg/m/s), the post-hurricane bloom in the outer shelf is resulted from the cross-shelf nutrient supply instead of the lateral dispersed chlorophyll. A coupled approach based on grain size and geochemical elements is used to trace the provenance of surface sediments and to confirm the distribution patterns of grain size and elements on the continental shelf off western Guangdong Province and northeastern Hainan Island. The mean grain size ranges from 0.05 ϕ to 7.28 ϕ with a mean value of 5.60 ϕ. The average concentrations of major elements descend in the order of SiO2 >Al2O3 >CaO>Fe2O3 >K2O>MgO>Na2O>TiO2 >P2O5 >MnO, while those of trace elements exhibit a descending order of Sr>Rb >Zn>V>Cr>Pb>Ni>Cu>As>Cd. On the basis of the distribution patterns of elements and results of statistical analysis, the study area is classified into three zones. Zone I locates on the continental shelf off western Guangdong Province, and the sediments are mainly from Pearl River, Taiwanese rivers, and small rivers nearby. Zone II locates in the eastern exit of Qiongzhou Strait and the coastal area off Leizhou Peninsula, and the sediments are mainly from the erosion products of Qiongzhou Strait and Hainan Island. Zone III locates off the eastern Hainan Island and the continental shelf deeper than −50 m isobaths, and the sediments are mainly from Hainan Island and coral reef. The influence from open water should also be considered. Results indicate that the grain size is the main controlling factor for major and trace element contents and that anthropogenic impact and biological activity also play an important role in the distribution of these elements. A total of 388 surface sediment samples taken from the northern South China Sea (SCS) continental shelf were analyzed to characterize the signature of their rare earth elements (REEs). The average REEs concentration was 192.94 μg/g, with a maximum of 349.07 μg/g, and a minimum of 32.97 μg/g. The chondrite-normalized REEs pattern exhibits a remarkably light REEs accumulation, a relatively flat heavy REEs pattern, and a negative Eu anomaly. We subdivided the study area into three zones using the characteristics of REEs and statistical characteristics. Zone I: continental shelf off western Guangdong Province. Here, the sediment provenance is mainly river-derived from the Pearl River, Taiwanese rivers, and those in the adjacent area. Zone II: Qiongzhou Strait and Leizhou Peninsula. Here, the sediment provenance consists of the Qiongzhou Strait and the Hainan Island. Zone III: Hainan Island and SCS slope sediments are dominated. The REEs compositions are mainly controlled by source rock properties, hydrodynamic conditions, and an intensity of chemical weathering. Ship Shoal has been a high-priority target sand resource for dredging activities to restore the eroding barrier islands in LA, USA. The Caminada and Raccoon Island pits were dredged on and near Ship Shoal, which resulted in a mixed texture environment with the redistribution of cohesive mud and noncohesive sand. However, there is very limited knowledge about the source and transport process of suspended muddy sediments near Ship Shoal. The objective of this study is to apply the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) model to quantify the sediment sources and relative contribution of fluvial sediments with the estuary and shelf sediments delivered to Ship Shoal. The model results showed that suspended mud from the Atchafalaya River can transport and bypass Ship Shoal. Only a minimal amount of suspended mud from the Atchafalaya River can be delivered to Ship Shoal in a one-year time scale. Additionally, suspended mud from the inner shelf could be transported cross Ship Shoal and generate a thin mud layer, which is also considered as the primary sediment source infilling the dredge pits near Ship Shoal. Two hurricanes and one tropical storm during the year 2017–2018 changed the direction of the sediment transport flux near Ship Shoal and contributed to the pit infilling (less than 10% for this specific period). Our model also captured that the bottom sediment concentration in the Raccoon Island pit was relatively higher than the one in Caminada in the same period. Suspended mud sediment from the river, inner shelf, and bay can bypass or transport and deposit in the Caminada pit and Raccoon Island pit, which showed that the Caminada pit and Raccoon Island pits would not be considered as a renewable borrow area for future sand dredging activities for coastal restoration. A soil erosion and sediment transport model (WRF-Hydro-Sed) is introduced to WRF-Hydro. As a process-based, fully distributed soil erosion model, WRF-Hydro-Sed accounts for both overland and channel processes. Model performance is evaluated using observed rain gauge, streamflow, and sediment concentration data during rainfall events in the Goodwin Creek Experimental Watershed in Mississippi, USA. Both streamflow and sediment yield can be calibrated and validated successfully at a watershed scale during rainfall events. Further discussion reveals the model's uncertainty and the applicability of calibrated hydro- and sediment parameters to different events. While an intensive calibration over multiple events can improve the model's performance to a certain degree compared with single event-based calibration, it might not be an optimal strategy to carry out considering the tremendous computational resources needed. We adapted the coupled ocean-sediment transport model to the northern Gulf of Mexico to examine sediment dynamics on seasonal-to-decadal time scales as well as its response to decreased fluvial inputs from the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River. Sediment transport on the shelf exhibited contrasting conditions in a year, with strong westward transport in spring, fall, and winter, and relatively weak eastward transport in summer. Sedimentation rate varied from almost zero on the open shelf to more than 10 cm/year near river mouths. A phase shift in river discharge was detected in 1999 and was associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event, after which, water and sediment fluxes decreased by ~20% and ~40%, respectively. Two sensitivity tests were carried out to examine the response of sediment dynamics to high and low river discharge, respectively. With a decreased fluvial supply, sediment flux and sedimentation rate were largely reduced in areas proximal to the deltas, which might accelerate the land loss in down-coast bays and estuaries. The results of two sensitivity tests indicated the decreased river discharge would largely affect sediment balance in waters around the delta. The impact from decreased fluvial input was minimum on the sandy shoals ~100 km west of the Mississippi Delta, where deposition of fluvial sediments was highly affected by winds. We applied the newly developed WRF-Hydro model to investigate the hydroclimatic trend encompassing the three basins in Southwest Louisiana as well as their connection with large-scale atmospheric drivers. Using the North American Land Data Assimilation System Phase 2 (NLDAS-2), we performed a multi-decadal model hindcast covering the period of 1979–2014. After validating the model’s performance against available observations, trend and wavelet analysis were applied on the time series of hydroclimatic variables from NLDAS-2 (temperature and precipitation) and model results (evapotranspiration, soil moisture, water surplus, and streamflow). Trend analysis of model-simulated monthly and annual time series indicates that the regional climate is warming and drying over the past decades, specifically during spring and summer (growing season). Wavelet analysis reveals that, since the late 1990s, the anomaly of evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and streamflow exhibits high coherency with that of precipitation. Pettitt’s test detects a possible change-point around the year 2004, after which the monthly precipitation decreased from 140 to 120 mm, evapotranspiration slightly increased from 80 to 83 mm, and water surplus decreased from 60 to 38 mm. Changes in regional climate conditions are closely correlated with large-scale climate dynamics such as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
