Social-ecological systems dependent on fisheries must be resilient or adapt to remain viable in the face of change. Here, we identified possible interventions (termed "adaptation options") from published literature, aimed at supporting social or ecological resilience and/or aiding adaptation to changes induced by environmental or social stressors. Our searches centered on nations/regions across North America, Europe, and the South Pacific, encompassing fisheries literature with and without a climate change focus, to compare how, when, and by whom interventions are currently or potentially implemented. We expected that adaptation options within a climate change context would have a greater focus on enhancing social resilience due to a connection with climate change adaptation assessment methodology. Instead, we found a greater focus on ecological resilience, likely indicating a focus on management adaptation. This pattern, along with the more extensive use of social adaptation options responsively and outside the context of climate change, along with an importance in bottom-up influences in implementing them, suggests a general lack of centralized planning and organization with regards to adaptation of stakeholders. Determining how adaptation options are created, chosen, and implemented is a crucial step within or external to ecosystem-based management, especially if planned stakeholder adaption is the goal. Context. Direct observation of γ-ray emission from the decay of
18 F ejected in classical nova outbursts remains a major focus of the nuclear astrophysics community. However, modeling the abundance of ejected18 F, and thus the predicted detectability distance of a γ-ray signal near 511 keV emitted from these transient thermonuclear episodes, is hampered by significant uncertainties in our knowledge of the key18 F(p, α) reaction rate. Aims. We analyze uncertainties in the most recent nuclear physics experimental results employed to calculate the18 F(p, α) reaction rate. Our goal is to determine which uncertainties have the most profound influence on the predicted abundance of18 F ejected from novae in order to guide future experimental works. Methods. We calculated a wide range of18 F(p, α) reaction rates using the R-Matrix formalism, which allowed us to take all interference effects into account. Using a selection of 16 evenly spaced rates over the full range, we performed 16 new hydrodynamic nova simulations. Results. We have performed one of the most thorough theoretical studies of the impact of the18 F(p, α) reaction in classical novae to date. The18 F(p, α) rate remains highly uncertain at nova temperatures, resulting in a factor of ∼10 uncertainty in the predicted abundance of18 F ejected from nova explosions. We also found that the abundance of18 F may be strongly correlated with that of19 F. Conclusions. Despite numerous nuclear physics uncertainties affecting the determination of the18 F(p, α) reaction rate, dominated by unknown interference signs between 1/2+ and 3/2+ resonances, future experimental work should focus on firmly and precisely determining the directly measurable quantum properties of the subthreshold states in the compound nucleus19 Ne near 6.13 and 6.29 MeV. 4. Study of the 25Mg(d,p)26Mg reaction to constrain the 25Al(p,γ)26Si resonant reaction rates in nova burning conditions.

The rate of the 25 Al(p, γ ) 26 Si reaction is one of the few key remaining nuclear uncertainties required for predicting the production of the cosmic γ -ray emitter 26 Al in explosive burning in novae. This reaction rate is dominated by three key resonances ( J π = 0 + , 1 + and 3 + ) in 26 Si. Only the 3 + resonance strength has been directly constrained by experiment. A high resolution measurement of the 25 Mg(d, p) reaction was used to determine spectroscopic factors for analog states in the mirror nucleus, 26 Mg. A first spectroscopic factor value is reported for the 0 + state at 6.256 MeV, and a strict upper limit is set on the value for the 1 + state at 5.691 MeV, that is incompatible with an earlier ( 4 He, 3 He) study. These results are used to estimate proton partial widths, and resonance strengths of analog states in 26 Si contributing to the 25 Al(p, γ ) 26 Si reaction rate in nova burning conditions. We present a detailed comparison of shell model calculations with inverse kinematic transfer reaction data, obtained using a radioactive beam. Experimentally extracted spectroscopic factors from the 26 Al (d , p) 27 Al reaction for both even and odd parity states are found to be exceptionally well reproduced by the shell model and a high level of consistency is observed between bound isobaric analog states in 27 Al and 27 Si , populated via (d, p) and (d, n) transfer, respectively. Furthermore, an evaluation of key resonances in the astrophysical 26 Al (p , γ) 27 Si reaction indicates that shell model calculations provide relatively accurate predictions for the existence of strong resonances and mirror nucleus comparisons appear to hold exceptionally well for proton-unbound levels. Consequently, we expect that the utilization of both techniques will likely be a very effective tool in the investigation of stellar processes outside the current reach of experiment. It is planned to install the heavy-ion, low-energy ring TSR, currently at the Max-Planck-Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, at the HIEISOLDE facility in CERN, Geneva. Such a facility will provide a capability for experiments with stored, cooled secondary beams that is rich and varied, spanning from studies of nuclear ground-state properties and reaction studies of astrophysical relevance, to investigations with highly-charged ions and pure isomeric beams. In addition to experiments performed using beams recirculating within the ring, the cooled beams can be extracted and exploited by external spectrometers for high-precision measurements. Nuclei far from the line of stability are a focal point of contemporary nuclear physics. Nuclear structure studies along the proton dripline remain an important component of the scientific program at the ATLAS facility. The Gammasphere gamma-ray array and the Fragment Mass Analyzer offer the unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity required to study nuclei at and beyond the proton dripline. Recent results in proton decay studies, in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy around

We have produced an intense and pure beam of
31 Cl with the MARS Separator at the Texas A&M University and studied β-decay of31 Cl by implanting the beam into a novel detector setup, capable of measuring β-delayed protons and γ-rays simultaneously. From our data, we have established decay scheme of31 Cl, found resonance energies with 1 keV precision, have measured its half-life with under 1% accuracy, found its Isobar Analog State decay and by using the IMME obtained an improved mass excess for its ground state. In this contribution, a description of the used method along with selected preliminary experimental results are given and their relevance for novae nucleosynthesis discussed. Decay spectroscopy is one of the oldest indirect methods in nuclear astrophysics. We have developed at TAMU techniques to measure beta- and beta-delayed proton decay of sd-shell, proton-rich nuclei. The short-lived radioactive species are produced in-flight, separated, then slowed down (from about 40 MeV/u) and implanted in the middle of very thin Si detectors. These allowed us to measure protons with energies as low as 200 keV from nuclei with lifetimes of 100 ms or less. At the same time we measure gamma-rays up to 8 MeV with high resolution HPGe detectors. We have studied the decay of
23 Al,27 P,31 Cl, all important for understanding explosive H-burning in novae. The technique has shown a remarkable selectivity to beta-delayed charged-particle emission and works even at radioactive beam rates of a few pps. The states populated are resonances for the radiative proton capture reactions22 Na(p,γ)23 Mg (crucial for the depletion of22 Na in novae),26m Al(p,γ)27 Si and30 P(p,γ)31 S (bottleneck in novae and XRB burning), respectively. The MARS group at TAMU has developed a new experimental technique to measure very low energy protons from β-delayed proton-decay of proton-rich nuclei produced and separated with the MARS recoil spectrometer at TAMU. Recently we have investigated the β-delayed p-decays of
23 Al [1], and31 Cl [2], and obtained information on the resonances in the22 Na(p,γ)23 Mg and30 P(p,γ)31 S reactions, respectively. These reactions are important in explosive H-burning in Novae [3]. Recently an experiment looking at the β-delayed p-decay of20 Mg was also done in order to obtain information on resonances in the19 Ne(p,γ)20 Na reaction. A simple setup consisting of a telescope made of a thin double sided Si strip detector (p-detector) backed or sandwiched between two thick Si detectors (β-detectors) was designed. We studied different W1 and BB2 p-detectors made by MSL, and found that the thinner detectors with a small cell size are best to measure proton energies as low as 2-300 keV. Classical novae are a site of explosive nucleosynthesis where hydrogen rich material from a companion giant star accretes onto the surface of a white warf. Critical to our understanding of nova explosions are proton-capture reaction rates involved in the nucleosynthesis. While, ideally, all of the relevant (p,γ) reactions would be measured directly, in practice, such measurements are very challenging and are only possible in a few cases. This provides considerable scope for indirect measurements including transfer reactions, mass measurements, beta-decay and gamma-ray spectroscopy. The latter technique, until recently largely neglected as an input in nuclear astrophysics analyses, has clear advantages in locating resonances with high energy precision and assisting in determining the spin and parity of resonances. A search for γ-ray transitions in
101 Sn, which contains only one neutron outside the100 Sn core, was carried out at the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System.101 Sn nuclei were produced using the46 Ti(58 Ni,3n)101 Sn reaction. In-beam γ rays were detected in the Gammasphere Ge-detector array and were correlated with101 Sn β-delayed protons using the Recoil-Decay Tagging method. A γ-ray line at 172 keV was assigned to101 Sn and was interpreted as the transition between the single-neutron g7/2 and d5/2 states. The measured νg7/2 -ν d5/2 energy splitting is compared with predictions of various mean-field potentials. It is also used to calculate multi-neutron configurations in light Sn isotopes. We have investigated the low-energy states of 11N by the elastic scattering method in inverse kinematics using a 10C beam and a (CD2)n target. Recoil protons were detected at 16 laboratory angles θlab = 4.6° – 18.9° in a ΔE - E detector system. Using the R-matrix method to analyse the 10C + p elastic cross sections, we found 11N to be unbound with respect to proton emission by 1.54±0.02 MeV with a decay width of 0.83±0.03. α-decay is known in a few cases just above 100Sn. The lowest isospin nuclei in which it has been observed are the Tz=1 nuclei 114Ba, 110Xe, and 106Te. For the next lower isospin with T
z =1/2, N=Z+1, we used the reactions 58Ni + 58Ni and 58Ni + 54Fe to search for the 113Ba→109Xe→105Te→101Sn α-decay chain. We found no candidates in our study. Conventionally, reaction rates relevant to nova nucleosynthesis are determined by performing the relevant proton capture reactions directly for stable species, or as has become possible more recently in inverse kinematics using short-lived accelerated radioactive beams with recoil separators. A secondary approach is to compile information on the properties of levels in the Gamow window using transfer reactions. We present a complementary technique where the states of interest are populated in a heavy-ion fusion reaction and their gamma decay studied with a state-of-the-art array of high-purity germanium detectors. The advantages of this approach, including the ability to determine resonance energies with high precision and the possibility of determining spins and parities from gamma-ray angular distributions are discussed. Gamma rays from the transitional proton emitting nuclei 145,146,147Tm have been observed using the recoil-decay tagging technique. The ground state band of 147Tm was confirmed and extended and the unfavoured signature sequence was observed. A ground state rotational band with properties of a decoupled h11/2 band was observed in 145Tm. In addition coincidences between the proton fine structure line and the 2+→0+ γ-ray transition in 144Er were detected at the focal plane of the FMA. This is the first time that coincidences between proton radioactive decays and γ rays have been seen. The paper reports on experimental developments for studies of decays of proton radioactive nuclei on the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer. The results illustrate that there is a clear proton decay rate sensitivity to the unpaired neutron orbital in highly deformed odd-odd nuclei consistent with the Influential Spectator Model of Ferreira and Maglione. No such sensitivity is observed for the proton decay rates of spherical odd-odd nuclei studied here. PROTONS ,RADIOACTIVITY ,NUCLEAR structure - Abstract
Several searches for new proton emitters were performed recently at ATLAS using the Argonne Fragment Mass Analyzer equipped with a Double-Sided Si Strip Detector. Proton emitting states were observed in odd-odd spherical nuclei [sup 164]Ir and [sup 170]Au. [sup 164]Ir is the fourth Ir proton emitter. A proton line was associated with the highly deformed odd-odd nucleus [sup 130]Eu. The proton emitter [sup 135]Tb was also observed. It is the first proton emitting Tb isotope. The estimated cross section for producing [sup 135]Tb is about 2 nb. The properties of the proton emitters deduced from this work helped to understand the role of core vibrations and neutrons in proton decay. In view of the present results the full delineation of the proton drip-line between Z=50 and Z=83 is feasible. In order to cope with small cross sections and short half lives expected for even more exotic proton emitters several modifications of the FMA implantation station were implemented. Measurements were also performed at the target position using a catcher to search for proton emitters with half lives down to 10 ns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Production of the radioisotope [sup 18]F in novae is severely constrained by the rate of the [sup 18]SF(p, α)[sup 15]O reaction. A resonance at E[sub c.m.] = 330 keV may strongly enhance the [sup 18]F(p,α)[sup 15]O reaction rate, but its strength has been very uncertain. We have determined the strength of this important resonance by measuring the [sup 18]F(p,α)[sup 15]O cross section on- and off-resonance using a radioactive [sup 18]F beam at the ORNL Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. We find that its resonance strength is 1.48±0.46 eV, and that it dominates the [sup 18]F(p, α)[sup 15]O reaction rate over a wide range of temperatures characteristic of novae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proton radioactivity studies performed at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) within the last few years are reviewed. The discovery of five new proton radioactivities [sup140]Ho,[sup141m]Ho, [sup145]Tm, [sup150m]Lu and [sup151m]Lu is presented together with a recent observation of fine structure in proton emission from [sup146gs,m]Tm. These proton emitters were produced by means of fusion-evaporation reactions and studied with the HRIBF Recoil Mass Separator and detection system based on a Double-sided Silicon Strip Detector. In a recent experiment to study the proton radioactivity of the highly deformed [sup131]Eu nucleus, two proton lines were detected. The higher energy one was assigned to the ground-state to ground-state decay, while the lower energy, to the ground-state to the 2[sup+] state decay. This constitutes the first observation of fine structure in proton radioactivity. With these four measured quantities, proton energies, half-life and branching ratio, it is possible to determine the Nilsson configuration of the ground state of the proton emitting nucleus as well as the 2[sup+] energy and nuclear deformation of the daughter nucleus. The last five years have witnessed a rapid increase in the volume of data on proton decaying nuclei. The path was led by decay studies with recoil mass separators equipped with double-sided Si strip detectors. The properties of many proton decaying states were deduced, which triggered renewed theoretical interest in the process of proton decay. The decay experiments were closely followed by in-beam 7-ray studies which extended our knowledge of high-spin states of proton emitters. The unparalleled selectivity of the Recoil-Decay Tagging method combined with the high efficiency of large arrays of Ge detectors allowed, despite small cross sections and overwhelming background from strong reaction channels, the observation of excited states in several proton emitters. Recently, in-beam studies of the deformed proton emitters [sup141]Ho and [sup131]Eu have been performed with the GAMMASPHERE array of Ge detectors and the Fragment Mass Analyzer at ATLAS. Evidence was found for rotational bands in [sup141]Ho and [sup131]Eu. The deformations and the single-particle configurations proposed for the proton emitting states from the earlier proton-decay studies were confronted with the assignments deduced based on the in-beam data. Morphological, dietary and life-history variation in Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were characterized from three geographically proximate, but isolated lakes and one large lake into which they drain in south-western Alaska. Polymorphism was predicted to occur in the first three lakes because S. alpinus tend to become polymorphic in deep, isolated lakes with few co-occurring species. Only one morph was evident in the large lake and two of the three isolated lakes. In the third isolated lake, Lower Tazimina Lake, small and large morphs were found, the latter including two forms differing in growth rate. The small morph additionally differed from the two large forms by having more gill rakers and a deeper body than same-sized individuals of the large morph, consuming more limnetic and fewer benthic resources, having a greater gonado-somatic index and maturing at a smaller size. The two large forms consumed only slightly different foods (more terrestrial insects were consumed by the medium-growth form; more snails by the high-growth form). Trends in consumption of resources with body shape also differed between lakes. Variability in life history of S. alpinus in these Alaskan lakes was as broad as that found elsewhere. Support for the theory of ecological speciation requires evidence for ecological divergence between species which directly or indirectly causes reproductive isolation. This study investigates effects of ecological vs. genetic disparity of parental species on the presence of endogenous selection (deformation and mortality rates) and potential sources of exogenous selection (growth rates and hatch timing) on hybrids. Hybrid embryonic development is analysed in a common-garden full-sib cross of three species belonging to two different ecotypes within the Coregonus lavaretus species flock in the central Alpine region of Europe. Although hatch timing was similar across the three species, embryonic growth rates and egg sizes differed between ecotypes. This led to a mismatch between embryonic growth rate and egg size in hybrid crosses that reveals epistasis between the maternal and embryonic genomes and transgressive hatch times that were asynchronous with control crosses. A strong constraint of egg size to embryo size at late development was also evident. We argue that this demonstrates potential for coadaptation of a maternal trait (egg size) with offspring growth rate to be an important source of selection against hybridization between ecotypes with different egg sizes. Implications for the measurement and quantification of early life-history traits affected by this additive relationship, such as hatch day and larval size, are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A search for in-beam γ-ray transitions in
101 Sn, which contains only one neutron outside the100 Sn core, using a novel approach was carried out at the Argonne Tandem-Linac System.101 Sn nuclei were produced using the46 Ti(58 Ni, 3n)101 Sn fusion-evaporation reaction. Beta-delayed protons with energies and decay times consistent with previous101 Sn decay studies were observed at the focal plane of the Fragment Mass Analyzer. In-beam γ rays were detected in the Gammasphere Ge-detector array and were correlated with the101 Sn β-delayed protons using the Recoil-Decay Tagging method. As a result, a γ-ray transition between the single-neutron vg7/2 and vd5/2 states situated at the Fermi surface was identified. The measured vg7/2 -vd5/2 energy splitting was compared with predictions corresponding to various mean-field potentials and was used to calculate multi-neutron configurations in light Sn isotopes. Studies of intraspecific morphological variation in fishes have traditionally focused on freshwater rather than marine species. In addition, such studies typically focus on adults, although causes and intensities of selective pressures most likely vary through an individual's lifetime. In this study, body and head shape of a marine species, shiner perch Cymatogaster aggregata Gibbons were compared among localities along the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. Evidence was found for intraspecific variation in ontogenetic allometry, and for a closer correlation of body shape with environment rather than geographical proximity. This correlation with environment was more evident in younger fish, thereby demonstrating the importance of analysing multiple life stages. A common garden experiment suggests both environmental and genetic bases for the observed differences. Recognizing intraspecific ecomorphological complexity and its specificity to habitat and/or life stage can have important consequences for understanding the role of local adaptation and population dynamics in macroecology. Conventionally, reaction rates relevant to nova nucleosynthesis are determined by performing the relevant proton capture reactions directly for stable species, or as has become possible more recently in inverse kinematics using short-lived accelerated radioactive beams with recoil separators. A secondary approach is to compile information on the properties of levels in the Gamow window using transfer reactions. We present a complementary technique where the states of interest are populated in a heavy-ion fusion reaction and their gamma decay studied with a state-of-the-art array of high-purity germanium detectors. The advantages of this approach, including the ability to determine resonance energies with high precision and the possibility of determining spins and parities from gamma-ray angular distributions are discussed. The very neutron-deficient
117 Ba nuclei were produced in58 Ni-induced reactions on a63 Cu target and selected for spectroscopic studies by using BaF+ molecules formed in the ion source of the GSI on-line mass separator. The ß-decay of117 Ba was investigated by means of the total absorption ?-ray spectrometer and a telescope for ß-delayed particle detection. In the analysis combining the ß-delayed ?-ray and proton data the energy window available for ß-delayed proton emission, the branching ratios for proton transitions to the116 Xe levels and the ß-feeding of the ?-ray and proton-emitting117 Cs states were determined. The ß-strength function for117 Ba derived from the measured ß-feeding distribution revealed the existence of a broad resonance structure at117 Cs excitation energy of about 4-5 MeV. In the astrophysically important reaction
19 Ne(p,γ)20 Na, the rate is dominated by a single key resonance at 450 keV above the proton-emission threshold in20 Na. We have developed a new experimental technique to measure very low energy protons from β-delayed p-decay of proton-rich nuclei produced and separated with the MARS recoil spectrometer at TAMU. Recently we have investigated the β-delayed p-decays of
23 Al[1] and31 Cl[2] and obtained information on the resonances in the reactions22 Na(p,γ)23 Mg and30 P(p,γ)31 S, respectively. These reactions are important in explosive H-burning in Novae [3]. A simple setup consisting of a telescope made of a thin double sided Si strip detector (p-detector) backed or sandwiched between two thick Si detectors (β-detectors) was designed. Gamma-rays from the odd-odd transitional proton-emitting nucleus
146 Tm have been observed using the recoil-decay tagging technique. A rotational band similar to the h11/2 decoupled band in147 Tm has been observed. The particle decay of146 Tm has been measured with improved statistics. A new decay scheme for146 Tm is discussed with reference to prompt and delayed γ-rays detected in coincidence with particle decays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
