In this work, TiO2-combined spherical carbon photocatalysts were prepared by using activated carbon and soot as starting material, phenolic resine (PR) as a binder, and TiO2, TIP as a titanium source. A series of spherical samples (ATP, STP, AOP, SOP) were prepared by controlling the weight percentage of TiO2 and the binder materials. These spherical samples were characterized via BET, XRD, TEM, AFM, and pressure drop. The photocatalytic activities of the spherical samples (ATP, STP, AOP, SOP) were investigated through the degradation of industrial dyes, including Texbrite BAC-L (TBAC), Reactive black b (RBB), Texbrite MST-L (TMST), and Texbrite BBU-L (TBBU), under irradiation with visible light. Meanwhile, the COD removal effect and the bactericidal effect test were also assessed. The kinetic studies and degradation rate were also conducted in order to determine the order of RBB > TBAC > TMST > TBBU for the industrial dyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of novel colourful BiOI photocatalysts have been synthesised by a simple oil bath method at 160°C. Several characterisation tools including X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were used to study the phase structure, morphologies, bandgap and catalytic performance of the prepared samples. The results show that BiOI exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency under visible light (λ > 420 nm) in the degradation of methyl orange. This result could be because of the narrow bandgap, for which Eg is about 1.4-2.25 eV, and a number of active positions for catalysts. h+ acts as the main active species during methyl orange degradation. CdSe, CdSe-TiO2, and CdSe-C60/TiO2 composites were prepared using sol-gel method, and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by measuring the degradation of rhodamine B solutions under visible light. The surface area, surface structure, crystal phase, and elemental identification of these composites were characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and UV-visible (vis) absorption spectrophotometry. XRD showed that the CdSe-C60/TiO2 composite contained a typical single and clear anatase phase. SEM of the CdSe-C60/TiO2 composites revealed a homogenous composition in the particles. EDX revealed the presence of C and Ti with strong Cd and Se peaks in the CdSe-C60/TiO2 composite. The degradation of dye was determined by UV-vis spectrophotometry. An increase in photocatalytic activity was observed and attributed to an increase in the photoabsorption effect by fullerene and the cooperative effect of the CdSe. The repeatability of photocatalytic activity was also tested in order to investigate the stability of C60 and CdS-C60/TiO2 composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CrO-CNT/TiO composites derived from chromium acetylacetonate, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and titanium n-butoxide (TNB) were prepared, and the photocatalytic activity of the CrO-CNT and CNT/TiO composites was examined. The CrO-CNT/TiO composites were characterized by BET surface area measurement, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. The photocatalytic activity was determined from the decomposition of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. 3-Chloroperbenzoic acid has been used to oxidise a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) to obtain more functional groups. Chromium trioxide, manganese oxide and ferric nitrate were used to pretreat the oxidised MWCNT and together with titanium n-butoxide as titanium precursor to prepare M-CNT/TiO2 composites. FTIR spectroscopy was used to determine the functional groups on the MWCNT and the characterisation of M-CNT/TiO2 composites was by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis.
