The real-time monitoring of ocean wave data is a crucial element in marine environmental monitoring and the development of marine resources. It is unfortunate that the majority of wave measurement devices remain challenging, relatively high-priced, and require sophisticated technology. This study investigates the validation of a new type of ocean wave measurement, designed based on the mini wave gauge (MWG), using low-cost materials. The study utilizes an accelerometer sensor, specifically the ADXL335, which is converted to measure wave height, and the GY-271 designed to measure wave direction. This research addresses the validation of MWG by comparing measurements from the acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) and HOBO. The validation of wave height demonstrates high accuracy, with a MAPE percentage of 0.46% between MWG and ADCP, and 23.30% between MWG and HOBO. In contrast, the validation of MWG for wave direction by ADCP still requires improvement, with a MAPE of 36.75%. This is due to the sensor's sensitivity to the earth's magnetic field, which requires further improvement of the buoy design to accommodate the direction of incoming waves. Additionally, the MWG's sampling rate in milliseconds allows for analyzing wave characteristics based on wave periods using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aims to understand the extent of microplastic contamination in Pekalongan waters, Central Java, and its potential impact on fishing grounds, aligning with Indonesia's National Action Plan for Handling Marine Debris 2018–2025. The study employs a 2D hydrodynamics modelling approach with Mike 21 Software to map the spatial distribution of microplastic movement concerning fishing areas during the west and east monsoon seasons. The results showed that microplastic particles follow tidal currents in Pekalongan waters, with their movement influenced by factors such as current, wind, and tidal conditions. The trajectory of microplastics entering fishing ground areas poses potential contamination risk for fish caught by fishermen, threatening the health of marine ecosystems and the stability of their structure and function. Plastic‐containing waste generated from industrial and household activities is usually discharged into rivers. Pekalongan Regency has several rivers that flow into the Java Sea, one of which is the Sengkarang River. Microplastic is a serious pollutant that has prompted enhanced research and experimentation. This study aims to determine the concentration and distribution of microplastics in water and sediment at the mouth of the Sengkarang River, Pekalongan. A total of 10 water samples and five sediment samples were collected from the river body to the deep water area around the Sengkarang River. Modeling of microplastic distribution is made using hydrodynamic modeling and particle tracking models using two‐dimensional mathematical model. The results showed that the abundance of microplastics ranged from 131 to 360 particle/m3 in water samples and 552.5–972.5 particle/kg in sediment samples. The most common types of microplastics found were fibers and fragments. The greatest abundance and distribution of microplastics are found in coastal areas in water samples and mangrove areas in sediment samples. Microplastics (MPs) are discovered in various places even encroaching on marine protected areas (MPA). The aim of this research is to investigate the occurrences of MPs pollutant in MPA and non-MPA in Karimunjawa National Park (KNP). The results showed that MPs from sea surface water were higher in MPA than non-MPA with range as 47.89-106.20 items/L, dominated by fragment, 1-50 µm size, black color and HDPE, LDPE, PP, Nylon, PVC, ABS, and PET in polymer types. It induced since it supplied from it surrounding, specifically the south of MPA, whereas there have been cottage constructions generating many marine debris. These findings indicate that occurrence of MPs still dominantly influenced from anthropogenic activity. Timbulsloko is a village on the coast of Sayung District, Demak Regency that is severely affected by coastal erosion. The coastal erosion in the Timbulsloko Village is mainly caused by the removal of mangrove areas, which has eliminated the function of the natural breakwater for the coast of the Timbulsloko Village. This study aimed to mitigate the coastal erosion in the form of structural and non-structural protection. Structurally (physically), mitigation is conducted by protecting the coastal area with the application of environmentally friendly coastal protection technology in the form of a Permeable breakwater with a Hybrid Engineering structure. Furthermore, the effectiveness of two different structure segments in damping waves from September 2020 – March 2021 will be measured. In contrast, non-structurally, mitigation is conducted in a non-physical way by analyzing the Coastal Vulnerability Index of Timbulsloko Village based on the parameters of Coastal Typology, Average Tidal Range, Significant Wave Height, Coastal Slope, Coastal Geomorphology, Sea Level Rises, and Shoreline Displacement using the CVI method. The effectiveness of the permeable structure’s wave damping is determined by the initial wave height and transmission wave height measured by the ultrasonic sensor. On the basis of segment differences, the Permeable Breakwater Segment 2 with a distance between bamboo of 0.25 m has better effectiveness than a Permeable Breakwater Segment 1 with a distance between bamboo of 0.5 m. The results of the Coastal Vulnerability Analysis show that the Timbulsloko Village is vulnerable to coastal disasters, especially coastal erosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The investigation of spatial changes in phytoplankton biomass and turbidity provide essential information for the survival of the coral reef ecosystem. The phytoplankton biomass variations are driven by many factors, such as nutrient inputs from anthropogenic and natural. In turn, turbidity is determined by sediment resuspension or transport from terrestrial systems. The estimation of phytoplankton biomass is represented by the chlorophyll-a concentration. This study aimed to analyze the chlorophyll-a dynamics to water quality parameters, such as turbidity, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature. The in-situ data gathered at 26 stations in the waters of the Barrang Caddi Island in August 2020. The results show that chlorophyll-a and turbidity have a negative correlation in the western and eastern regions, since turbidity inhibits the rate of photosynthesis and causes the decreasing of phytoplankton biomass. Nevertheless, the highest concentration of chlorophyll-a was found in the southern location, in small spots around islands and reefs, including near Barrang Caddi Island. Total Suspended Solid has more significant effect on chlorophyll-a than other water parameters, such as turbidity, temperature, salinity in the study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
