The role of the cerebral cortex in self-initiated versus sensory-driven movements is central to understanding volitional action. Whether the differences in these two movement classes are due to specific cortical areas versus more cortex-wide engagement is debated. Using wide-field Ca2+ imaging, we compared neural dynamics during spontaneous and motorized treadmill locomotion, determining the similarities and differences in cortex-wide activation and functional connectivity (FC). During motorized locomotion, the cortex exhibits greater activation globally prior to and during locomotion starting compared to spontaneous and less during steady-state walking, during stopping, and after termination. Both conditions are characterized by FC increases in anterior secondary motor cortex (M2) nodes and decreases in all other regions. There are also cortex-wide differences; most notably, M2 decreases in FC with all other nodes during motorized stopping and after termination. Therefore, both internally- and externally-generated movements widely engage the cortex, with differences represented in cortex-wide activation and FC patterns. How the cerebral cortex controls internally- versus sensory-driven movements remains unclear. Among young people who use drugs in the context of entrenched poverty and homelessness, pregnancy is often viewed as an event that can meaningfully change the trajectory of their lives. However, youth's desires and decision-making do not always align with the perspectives of various professionals and systems regarding how best to intervene during pregnancies and early parenting. Drawing on longitudinal interviews and fieldwork with young people in Vancouver, Canada, we explore how their romantic relationships powerfully shaped understandings of what was right and wrong and which actions to take during pregnancy and early parenting, and how these moral worlds frequently clashed with the imperatives of healthcare, criminal justice, and child protection systems. We demonstrate how a disjuncture between youth's desires, decision-making and moralities, and the systems that are intended to help them, can further entrench young people in cycles of loss, defeat, and harm. Objectives: To estimate the health care and societal costs of inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) in Australia. Design, setting, participants: Microsimulation modelling study based on primary data — collected in interviews of people with IRDs who had ophthalmic or genetic consultations at the Children's Hospital at Westmead or the Save Sight Institute (both Sydney) during 1 January 2019 – 31 December 2020, and of their carers and spouses — and linked Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Pharmaceutical Benefits Schedule (PBS) data. Main outcome measures: Annual and lifetime costs for people with IRDs and for their carers and spouses, grouped by payer (Australian government, state governments, individuals, private health insurance) and type (health care costs; societal costs: social support, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), income and taxation, costs associated with caring for family members with IRDs); estimated annual national cost of IRDs. Results: Ninety‐four people (74 adults, 20 people under 18 years; 55 girls and women [59%]) and 30 carers completed study surveys (participation rate: adults, 66%; children, 66%; carers, 63%). Total estimated lifetime cost was $5.2 million per person with an IRD, of which 87% were societal and 13% health care costs. The three highest cost items were lost income for people with IRDs ($1.4 million), lost income for their carers and spouses ($1.1 million), and social spending by the Australian government (excluding NDIS expenses: $1.0 million). Annual costs were twice as high for people who were legally blind as for those with less impaired vision ($83 910 v $41 357 per person). The estimated total annual cost of IRDs in Australia was $781 million to $1.56 billion. Conclusion: As the societal costs associated with IRDs are much larger than the health care costs, both contributors should be considered when assessing the cost‐effectiveness of interventions for people with IRDs. We use difference‐in‐differences approaches and parcel‐level data from Minneapolis to estimate the effects of light rail on land use change using alternate definitions of treatment area. Results using circular buffers corroborate previous findings that light rail has virtually no effect on land use change in our study area. In contrast, light rail increases the likelihood of land use change along arterial streets that cross the line at station areas. To accurately model the effects of public transit projects on urban land use, one must consider how potential riders access station areas, rather than assuming accessibility improves radially around a station. Transdisciplinary research (TDR) approaches have been cited as essential for overcoming the intractable sustainability challenges that the world is currently facing, including air pollution, water management and climate change. However, such approaches can be difficult to undertake in practice and can consequently fail to add value. Therefore, examples of what works in practice (and what does not) are helpful to guide future research. In this study, we used a conceptual TDR framework as the basis to examine and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of our approach in a project exploring air pollution in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Reflection diaries exploring experiences of participation in the project were undertaken by the project team (comprising academic and community partners) at multiple time points throughout the project. These reflection diaries played an important role in evaluation and for providing space for team learning. Diaries were thematically coded according to the TDR framework to explore aspects of the project that worked well, and areas which presented challenges. We draw upon our reflections, and the extant literature, to make practical recommendations for researchers undertaking TDR projects in future. Recommendations focus on three key project stages (pre-funding, funded period, post-funding) and include; building the team in a way that includes all key stakeholders in relevant and appropriate roles, giving everyone sufficient time to work on the project, and ensuring regular and open communication. Building these recommendations into the design and delivery of transdisciplinary sustainability science projects will support progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This methods paper describes a new UK-wide citizen science project, the Schools' Air Quality Monitoring for Health and Education (SAMHE) project, which is exploring indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools. Central to the project is a Web App, where school teachers and pupils can see air quality and environmental data from their classroom, learn about the significance of the data that their monitor collects, enter important contextual information to support data analysis by researchers, and are supported to do their own experiments related to air quality. School use of the SAMHE Web App is essential to the project's aims to 1) improve understanding of air quality in schools; 2) empower teachers and pupils to make informed decisions about management of their classroom environment, including ventilation; and 3) support the UK's next generation to think differently about air quality. Therefore, it is critical that the SAMHE Web App was co-designed with schools, to maximise its acceptability within schools, and to ensure that teachers and pupils engage with it. This paper describes the co-design process used within SAMHE, how co-design has helped shape the web app (including overall theme, visualisation of data, and supporting materials), and some lessons learned from the process that will be useful for future software development and citizen science projects with schools. Citizen science has a problem with engaging diverse participants, with a growing number of studies showing those most marginalised in society, who could benefit most from citizen science activities, are the least likely to participate. The full implications of this lack of diversity for what citizen science can achieve remains unexplored. To do this, we reviewed the literature to create a comprehensive list of 70 proposed benefits, outcomes, and impacts of citizen science. We used this list to construct 9 pathways to impact, showing how short-term project outcomes under the themes of data, participant engagement and collaboration lead to a suite of medium- and long-term outcomes. We then explored how a lack of diversity in citizen science participants can cascade through these pathways, affecting the overall ability of citizen science to achieve its myriad potential impacts and further entrenching disparities in society. We advocate for project leaders to use a pathways to impact approach to explore how who they recruit will affect what their projects can achieve. We also call for greater imagination in exploring, testing, and sharing ways in which barriers to participation can be understood and overcome to open citizen science up to all and to achieve its potential. This article explores an inflection point for a community of cryptography advocates as they grappled with a series of cascading failures. Drawing on 3 years of ethnographic observation and interviews at conferences devoted to building privacy systems, I consider how a determinist conception of encryption technologies inhibited the widespread adoption of privacy technologies. I develop the frame of "survival of the cryptic" to call attention to the way this conception fails to acknowledge how power shapes the conditions of surveillance: that race and racism, gender and misogyny affect not only who is most impacted by surveillance but also how the encryption technologies developed to inhibit surveillance were designed—and, as importantly, who they were designed for. I conclude by offering a new imaginary for encryption that draws on queer, black and feminist thought by centering the need to create safe and autonomous spaces for collective survival under conditions of mass surveillance. Background: First introduced as the safer alternative to smoking, vaping has become a popular activity among young adults. However, little is known about its potential health effects. This pilot project examined the acute cardiovascular effects of nicotine vapes/e cigarettes (EC) compared to tobacco cigarettes (TC) in young adults to determine if vaping is more detrimental to cardiovascular health than traditional cigarettes. Methods: 16 healthy participants (7 M, 9 F; 20.2 ± 1.9 years) were recruited to participate in the study. Anthropometric measures were determined upon entry into the study. In addition, circulatory measures (heart rate [HR], blood pressure [BP] and heart rate variability [HRV]) were measured prior to and 10-min following vaping or cigarette smoking and in response to an orthostatic challenge. Results: Resting circulatory and HRV measures were not different between chronic EC-users and TC-smokers. Both vaping and cigarette smoking-induced a significant increase in cardiovascular measures (HR and BP) but not HRV measures. Both groups responded similarly to the orthostatic challenge prior to and following vaping/smoking. Conclusion: These results indicate that, from a cardiovascular perspective, vaping induces similar acute effects as cigarette smoking and that young adults should be counselled about these adverse effects accordingly. In 1976, two researchers declared a revolution in cryptography: With the invention of public key encryption, cryptography could be used not only to share secret messages, but to secure and authenticate communications networks, and, eventually, to enable radically new kinds of social relationships facilitated by networked communication technology. This article explores a series of transformations in the meaning of cryptography in the 1960s and 1970s that led to the declaration of a revolution. Drawing on archival materials, the article considers how public key cryptography was the product of an emerging consensus among cryptographers of the importance of privacy in the wake of abuses of surveillance powers by government agencies. Shaped by a changing technological and political environment, it situates cryptography at the center of a focused effort to assert control over information in an era of sociopolitical upheaval, concluding that the invention of public key encryption both marked a change in the imaginary surrounding cryptography and offered a technical solution that foreclosed other approaches to addressing the problem of surveillance. Undergraduate research experiences are important for the development of scientific identity, appreciation of authentic research, and improvement of persistence toward science careers. We identified a gap in experiential research opportunities for undergraduate Biology students who were seeking a formal yet small-scale research experience that was unique to their own interests and career aspirations. These opportunities may be especially worthwhile for of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students aspiring to nonresearch scientific careers (i.e., medicine, dentistry, forensics, and communication) and underrepresented STEM students. Here, we reflect on the use of small-scale, individualized undergraduate research experiences that are based on established methods. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in females of reproductive age. Hypersecretion of luteinizing hormone (LH), partly due to increased pituitary sensitivity to gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), is a significant cause of infertility in women with PCOS. Moreover, obesity amplifies the severity of reproductive dysfunction in PCOS. In sheep, testosterone (T) excess during gestational days (GD) 30 to 90 results in GnRH-mediated LH hypersecretion and recapitulates the PCOS phenotype. This study investigated 1) if midgestation (GD 60 to 90) is the susceptibility window for programming pituitary hypersensitivity to GnRH, and 2) the contribution of postnatal obesity in modulating LH responsiveness to GnRH. Suffolk ewes received T propionate (T; 100 mg i.m.) or corn oil (C; vehicle) twice weekly from GD 60 to 90 (term = 147 d). At 5 mo of age, T lambs were assigned randomly to either a maintenance (100% of NRC requirements) or overfed diet (130% of NRC requirements), and Control lambs were fed the maintenance diet. During the anestrous period (late summer), ewes (n = 8/group; ~17 mo of age) received a GnRH bolus injection (2 ng/kg) intravenously every 1.5 h and blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for a 6-h period. Despite animals being in seasonal anestrous, few endogenous LH pulses were evident during the 6 h-sampling period. To avoid confounding, only clear responses to GnRH challenge that occurred within 15 to 45 min after each GnRH injection were considered for further analyses. Mean number of exogenous GnRH-induced LH responses that met these criteria did not differ between groups and averaged 1.81 ± 0.27 pulses/animal. The parameters of these GnRH-induced responses were analyzed as one-way ANOVA with Tukey's HSD post-hoc analysis. Mean LH pulse peak was greater (P < 0.05) in T overfed ewes (4.59 ± 0.49 ng/mL) compared with T maintenance (2.19 ± 0.61 ng/mL) and Control ewes (2.58 ± 0.53 ng/mL). Additionally, amplitude of LH pulses was greater (P < 0.05) in T overfed ewes (2.66 ± 0.39 ng/mL) compared with T maintenance (1.03 ± 0.48 ng/mL) and tended (P = 0.089) to be greater in T overfed compared with Control ewes (1.41 ± 0.42 ng/mL). LH pulse peak and amplitude in T maintenance did not differ from Control ewes. In conclusion, failure of GD 60 to 90 T treatment to increase GnRH responsiveness as opposed to our earlier finding of increased responsiveness in GD 30 to 90 T-treaded sheep indicates that the susceptibility window for programming pituitary hypersensitivity to GnRH lies between GD 30 to 60. Postnatal obesity may act as an independent activational signal in amplifying the pituitary sensitivity to GnRH in female sheep. Women with PCOS exhibit reduced sensitivity of the GnRH neuronal system to the inhibitory effects of both progesterone and estradiol. Additionally, obesity amplifies the severity of the PCOS phenotype. In sheep, testosterone (T) excess during gestational days (GD) 30-90 and 60-90 reduces neuroendocrine sensitivity to the progesterone negative feedback and recapitulates the PCOS phenotype. This study investigated the contribution of postnatal obesity in amplifying or mitigating the effects of midgestational T excess in disrupting the responsiveness to progesterone negative feedback in sheep. Suffolk ewes received T propionate (T; 100 mg i.m.) or corn oil (CO; vehicle) twice weekly from GD 60-90 (term = 147 d). At 5 mo of age, F1 T lambs were assigned randomly to either a maintenance (100% of NRC requirements) or overfed diet (130% of NRC requirements) and control lambs were fed the maintenance diet. At 22 mo of age, F1 ewes (n = 8/group) were synchronized with two injections of PGF2α 11 d apart. After the second PGF2α administration, blood samples were collected daily for 14 d and progesterone concentrations were determined via radioimmunoassay. Ewes that were confirmed to be cycling and in the mid-luteal phase based on progesterone concentrations (progesterone = 1 ng/ml on day 10 and = 0.5 ng/ml on days 8-9 and 11-12) were used for LH pulse characterization. On day 10 after PGF2α synchronization (mid-luteal phase), blood samples were collected every 15 min for 6 h to characterize LH pulsatile secretion via radioimmunoassay. Data were analyzed as one-way ANOVA with Tukey's HSD post-hoc analysis. Frequency of LH pulses was greater (P < 0.05) in T maintenance (3.75 ± 0.41 pulses/6h) and T overfed ewes (3.50 ± 0.34 pulses/6h) compared with controls (2.00 ± 0.37 pulses/6 h). Luteinizing hormone pulse amplitude was greater (P < 0.05) in T overfed (2.03 ± 0.15 ng/mL) compared with T maintenance (1.44 ± 0.17 ng/mL), but not to controls (1.74 ± 0.21 ng/mL). Also, average LH concentration was greater (P < 0.05) in T overfed (2.03 ± 0.24 ng/mL), but not T maintenance (1.31 ± 0.35 ng/mL), compared with controls (0.93 ± 0.30 ng/mLl). In conclusion, these findings demonstrate the activational role of postnatal obesity in amplifying prenatal T-induced alterations in tonic LH secretion during progesterone negative feedback. The activational effect of postnatal obesity in increasing LH secretion and consequently thecal androgen production is likely a contributor to the severity of hyperandrogenic status in women with PCOS. Objective: Cognitive flexibility, typically measured using neuropsychological tasks of set-shifting, has been associated with mental and physical health, social relationships, resilience, and overall quality of life (Diamond, 2013; Chen et al., 2014; Davis et al., 2010; de Abreu et al., 2014; Genet et al., 2011). Previous research has found conflicting results regarding the relationship between set-shifting and various measures of functional outcomes in individuals with traumatic brain injury (Allanson et al., 2017). The present study examined the relationship between cognitive flexibility and adaptive functioning in individuals with acquired brain injuries (ABI). Participants and Methods: Participants in this research are adults (n = 116) with severe, chronic ABI who completed a neuropsychological evaluation through Bancroft Neurorehab between 2012-2022. Participants ranged in age from 20.4 - 67.8 years (M = 45.8). Individuals included in data analysis completed Trails A and B, Wide Range Achievement Test, Fourth Edition (WRAT-4) Word Reading, and Texas Functional Living Scale (TFLS). Set-shifting ability was measured using Trails B and adaptive functioning was measured using the TFLS. Word reading ability, measured using the WRAT-4, was included as a covariate to account for the impact of word reading difficulties on Trails B performance. Results: A simple linear regression was conducted to examine if Trails B T-score (M = 24.7) and WRAT-4 Word Reading Standard Score (M = 87.8) predicted TFLS Total T-score (M = 35.8). The overall regression model was statistically significant (R2 =.351, F(2, 113) = 32.0, p <.001). It was found that lower performances on Trails B (ß =.272, p <.001) and WRAT-4 Word Reading (ß =.189, p <.001) both significantly predicted a lower TFLS Total T-score. Conclusions: Set-shifting and word reading ability significantly predicted the overall adaptive functioning score on the TFLS which adds to a body of literature that suggests that the ability to think and behave flexibly affects functional aspects of everyday living. These findings are consistent with previous literature regarding the association between cognitive flexibility and adaptive functioning in the general population, and these results add to the growing body of research on cognitive flexibility in individuals with brain injury. Clinicians may use an individual's set-shifting performance to estimate and further assess potential difficulties in completing activities of daily living. This information may assist in subsequent treatment planning and identifying treatment goals of cognitive rehabilitation consistent with rehabilitation psychology's goals of increasing levels of adaptive functioning and quality of life (Division 22 of the American Psychological Association, n.d.). Future research may examine if certain domains of adaptive functioning are more or less affected by impairments in cognitive flexibility. Background: Lightweight rowers commonly utilize weight loss techniques over 24-h before competition to achieve the qualifying weight for racing. The objective was to investigate, using a quasi-experimental design, whether changes in weight resulting from dehydration practices are related to changes in proxies of bodily systems involved in rowing and whether these relationships depend on the dehydration technique used. Methods: Twelve elite male rowers performed a power test, an incremental VO2max test, and a visuomotor battery following: weight loss via thermal exposure, weight loss via fluid abstinence and then thermal exposure, and no weight loss. The total percent body mass change (%BMC), %BMC attributable to thermal exposure, and %BMC attributable to fluid abstinence were used to predict performance variables. Results: Fluid abstinence but not thermal exposure was related to a lower total wattage produced on a incremental VO2max test (b = 4261.51 W/1%BMC, 95%CI = 1502.68–7020.34), lower wattages required to elicit 2 mmol/L (b = 27.84 W/1%BMC, 95%CI = 14.69–40.99) and 4 mmol/L blood lactate (b = 20.45 W/1%BMC, 95%CI = 8.91–31.99), and slower movement time on a visuomotor task (b = -38.06 ms/1%BMC, 95%CI = -62.09–-14.03). Conclusions: Dehydration related weight changes are associated with reductions in some proxies of bodily systems involved in rowing but depend on the dehydration technique used. Visual information about the location of an upcoming target can be used to prepare an appropriate motor response and reduce its reaction time. Here, we investigated the brain mechanisms associated with the reliability of directional information used for motor preparation. We recorded brain activity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) during a delayed reaching task in which a visual cue provided valid information about the location of the upcoming target with 50, 75, or 100% reliability. We found that reaction time increased as cue reliability decreased and that trials with invalid cues had longer reaction times than trials with valid cues. MEG channel analysis showed that during the late cue period the power of the beta-band from left mid-anterior channels, contralateral to the responding hand, correlated with the reliability of the cue. This effect was source localized over a large motor-related cortical and subcortical network. In addition, during invalid-cue trials there was a phasic increase of theta-band power following target onset from left posterior channels, localized to the left occipito-parietal cortex. Furthermore, the theta-beta cross-frequency coupling between left mid-occipital and motor cortex transiently increased before responses to invalid-cue trials. In conclusion, beta-band power in motor-related areas reflected the reliability of directional information used during motor preparation, whereas phasic theta-band activity may have signaled whether the target was at the expected location or not. Aim The aim of this study was to further understand the impact and experience of living with type 1 diabetes while preparing for pregnancy, during pregnancy and postnatally. Methods A qualitative study design was utilised. Women who were up to twelve months postpartum and were living with type 1 diabetes, were eligible for the study. One-on-one individual interviews, lasting between 18 and 48 minutes, were conducted with consenting participants from August 2019 to July 2020. Following data collection, interviews were transcribed verbatim with coding and thematic analysis utilised for data analysis. Results Seven women participated in the study. Findings from the data revealed five key themes: expectations, pressure and judgement; medicalisation and risk management at times overshadowing the joy of being pregnant; impact of hospital processes on women's individual choices; positive and negative influences and impact of using technology and, striving for a new normal postnatally through self-determination, courage, bravery, resilience and support. Conclusions The experience of preparing for pregnancy, being pregnant and caring for self and baby postnatally is complex for women living with type 1 diabetes. Results identified the need for an individualised approach to this trajectory and the need for health professionals to be aware of women's choices and experiences to ensure delivery of person-centred care. Objective: The purpose of this exploratory descriptive correlational study was to examine relationships between adolescent screen time and social anxiety. A secondary purpose was to explore sex-specific relationships between adolescent screen time and social anxiety. Method: Screen time habits, as well as the Kutcher Social Anxiety Disorder Scale scores, were collected from 84 high school health students (ages 14 to 17 years). Exploratory analysis included independent t tests and Pearson's r correlations between demographics and the K-GSADS-A. Additional subgroup analysis was conducted by sex to further explore the K-GSADS-A. Results: The majority of parents of students surveyed do not limit screen time for their teens. Both males and females had higher levels of social anxiety reported with higher screen time (p < 0.001). Males that spent less time on screens and thought their parents spent more time on screens had higher fear and anxiety scores (p = 0.02). Females in particular scored higher on the anxiety scale when reporting more than three hours daily on social media (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Using the information obtained in the surveys, teen mental health is impacted by screen use, especially social media, and by parental involvement, including limit setting and parental use of screens in the home. Hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (SCT) is increasingly used to treat children with cancer, and survival following SCT is improving. One predominant consequence of childhood cancer therapy is increased physical morbidity, which is worse in pediatric SCT recipients compared with children treated with chemotherapy or radiation alone. There are many factors that contribute to exercise intolerance and reduced physical function during the pretransplant, peritransplant, and posttransplant phases. These include side effects from chemotherapy or radiation, excessive immobility due to bed rest, infections, the negative effects of immunosuppressants, and graft vs host disease, all of which can impair cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, and muscle function. Few studies have investigated the effects of exercise in childhood SCT recipients. In a small number of published studies, exercise interventions have been demonstrated to improve cardiorespiratory fitness, preserve or increase muscle mass, and improve muscle strength in children following SCT. The use of exercise as medicine may be a noninvasive and nonpharmaceutical treatment to target physical complications post-SCT. Researchers and health-care professionals should work together to develop exercise prescription guidelines for this unique and important population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding motivations is important because appealing to and fulfilling motivations helps citizen science projects recruit and retain participants. We summarise the literature around motivations, drawing on key theories from volunteering more broadly and building on this with additional motivations identified in studies of citizen scientists. We also examine what is known about differences in motivations between demographic groups. We then report on a survey of 613 environmental citizen scientists in Great Britain; they were asked to select from a list of motivations derived from the literature. We used hierarchical cluster analysis to group respondents by types of motivations held. Two clusters were dominated by people holding Values motivations (concern for others or the environment), both of which had high proportions of older people and people identifying as from white ethnic groups. A third cluster included people with Egoism motivations (participating to learn something or further one's career) and Values motivations. This cluster had a higher proportion of some commonly underrepresented groups than the overall sample, including younger people, people identifying as from minority ethnic groups and people in lower socioeconomic groups. Two further clusters also had higher proportions of people from minority ethnic groups than the overall sample, one dominated by those who participated because they were asked to, and the other by people who held other motivations not in our list. We use insights on participant motivations from the literature and survey to make recommendations to those wishing to recruit and retain citizen scientists, particularly those from underrepresented groups. Reported benefits of environmental citizen science include the collection of large volumes of data, knowledge and skills gained by participants, local action, and policy influence. However, it is unclear how diverse citizen science participants are, raising concerns about representativeness of data and whether individual, societal, and environmental benefits are evenly distributed. We surveyed 8,220 people representing a cross section of the population in Great Britain to ask whether they had participated in environmental citizen science, allowing us to examine who is and who is not participating. Using logistic regression, we examined relationships between demographic variables, and crucially the interactions between these variables, and the likelihood of participation and whether participation was repeated. Men were more likely to participate than women. People identifying as from white ethnic groups were more likely to participate than those identifying as from minority ethnic groups; participation by women from minority ethnic groups was particularly low. Participation by those from white ethnic groups declined with socio-economic status, but this was not the case for those from minority ethnic groups. Participation was highest amongst those in education (studying at school, college, or university) and lowest amongst the unemployed. We recommend citizen science practitioners carefully consider the aims of projects and thus the diversity of participants they wish to attract. We discuss potential mechanisms for widening participation, for example, engaging participants through third parties already embedded in communities and providing a variety of tasks for people with different amounts of time and types of skills to offer. Objective: To investigate whether once-daily (OD) fluticasone furoate (FF)/vilanterol (VI) provides greater long-term protection from postexercise fall in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) than twice-daily (BD) fluticasone propionate (FP) in patients with asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, crossover study was conducted in patients (aged 12–50 years) on low-/mid-dose maintenance inhaled corticosteroid. Following a 4-week run-in period (FP 250 µg BD), patients with a ≥ 20% decrease in postexercise FEV1 received FF/VI 100/25 µg OD or FP 250 µg BD for 2 weeks. Exercise challenges were carried out 23 h after the first dose of study medication, and 12 and 23 h after evening clinic dose at the end of the 2-week treatment period. After a 2-week washout period (FP 250 µg), patients crossed over treatments, with procedures and tests repeated. The primary endpoint was mean maximal percentage decrease from pre-exercise FEV1 following exercise challenge 12-h postevening dose on Day 14. Results: The mean maximal percentage decrease from pre-exercise FEV1 after the 12-h exercise challenge (Day 14) was 15.02% with FF/VI, and 16.71% with FP (difference, −1.69; 95% confidence interval, −3.76 to 0.39; p = 0.109). After the 23-h exercise challenge (Day 14), respective mean maximal decreases were 11.90% and 14.05% (difference, −2.15; 95% confidence interval, −4.31 to 0.01). Background: Parents are increasingly searching online for information supported by research but can find it difficult to identify results relevant to their own experiences. More troublingly, a number of studies indicate that parenting information found online often can be misleading or wrong. The goal of the Parenting Science Gang (PSG) project was to use the power of the Internet to help parents ask questions they wanted to have answered by scientific research and to feel confident in assessing research evidence. Methods: By using Facebook to recruit groups and facilitate interactions, PSG was able to engage fully the target public of parents of young children in the radical co-production of scientific studies, while not creating an undue burden on time or restricting participants due to disability, financial status or location. By giving parents true partnership and control of creation of projects, PSG ensured that the chosen questions were ones that were of most relevance and interest to them. Results: This paper presents a summary of eight projects, with three in more detail, designed and implemented by PSG Facebook groups in collaboration with experts. Most projects had health related themes, often prompted by dissatisfaction with treatment of parents by health professionals or by feelings of being marginalised by pregnancy and motherhood, as well as by the lack of evidence for their questions and concerns. The PSG approach meant that these frustrations were channelled into actions. All eight of the PSG groups engaged in meaningful interactions with experts and co-produced studies with the groups defining the questions of interest. Conclusions: This radically user-led design meant that the PSG staff and the collaborating experts had to live with a high degree of uncertainty. Nevertheless, PSG achieved its goal of academically productive, truly co-produced projects, but as important were the positive effects it had on many of the participants, both parents and experts. At the point of writing this paper, PSG projects have led to outputs including at least eight papers published, in press or in preparation, seven conference presentations, testimony to the Infant Feeding All-Party Parliamentary Group, and with more to come. Approximately 5 million beef heifers enter the U.S. cow herd annually, and their lifetime productivity is largely dependent upon their ability to attain puberty and produce a calf by 24 mo of age. However, a considerable proportion of heifers within existing U.S. production systems fail to achieve these goals, particularly in southern regions where Bos indicusinfluenced cattle predominate. Consequently, managerial approaches are needed that employ nutritional programming of the reproductive neuroendocrine axis, while minimizing feeding costs and optimizing the consistent attainment of puberty by approximately 14 mo of age. Our previous research has clearly demonstrated that increased BW gain between 4 and 8 mo of age facilitates pubertal development by programming hypothalamic centers that regulate gonadotropin releasing-hormone (GnRH) secretion. Among the different metabolic hormones, leptin has a critical role in conveying nutritional information to the hypothalamus and controlling puberty. Two hypothalamic neuronal populations that express the orexigenic peptide neuropeptide Y (NPY) and the anorexigenic peptide alpha melanocyte-stimulating hormone (aMSH; a product of the POMC gene) are key components of afferent pathways that convey inhibitory (NPY) and excitatory (aMSH) inputs to GnRH and kisspeptin neurons. Our studies have demonstrated that short-term increases in dietary energy intake after early weaning at 4 mo of age result in epigenetic, structural, and functional modifications in these hypothalamic pathways to promote high-frequency, episodic release of GnRH and luteinizing hormone. However, integrating the foundational knowledge of metabolic imprinting of the brain for early puberty with issues related to lifetime performance is complex. One approach has been to employ a novel stair-step nutritional regimen involving alternating periods of dietary energy-restriction and re-feeding during juvenile development. This approach is designed to support early onset of puberty by imprinting functional alterations in the hypothalamus during key periods of brain development while optimizing other aspects of growth and performance. Finally, while several key processes of fetal brain development occur during late gestation, neither maternal undernutrition (BCS 3.0-3.5) nor maternal obesity (BCS 7.5-8.0) during the last two trimesters of gestation impacted the organization of hypothalamic neurocircuitries controlling GnRH/LH secretion or age at puberty in the heifer offspring. Collectively, these results indicate that the adult reproductive phenotype in Bos indicus-influenced females is resilient to significant degrees of nutritional stress imposed during prenatal development, particularly if early gestation (first trimester) is avoided. These findings are in contrast with reports in Bos taurus females in which late gestation nutritional extremes result in delayed puberty in heifer offspring, suggesting that potential genotype-specific differences may exist. FreshWater Watch is a global citizen science project that seeks to advance the understanding and stewardship of freshwater ecosystems across the globe through analysis of their physical and chemical properties by volunteers. To date, literature concerning citizen science has mainly focused on its potential to generate unprecedented volumes of data. In this paper, we focus instead on the data relating to the volunteer experience and ask key questions about volunteer engagement with the project. For example, we ask what factors influence: a) volunteer data submission following a training event and b) the number of water quality samples volunteers subsequently submit. We used a binomial model to identify the factors that influence the retention of volunteers after training. In addition, we used a generalized linear model (GLM) to examine the factors that affected the number of samples each citizen scientist submitted. In line with other citizen science projects, most people trained did not submit any data, and 1% of participants contributed 47% of the data. We found that the statistically significant factors associated with submission of data after training were: whether training was given on how to upload data, the number of volunteers that attended the training, whether the volunteer was assigned to a research team, the outside temperature, and the average engagement of others in the training group. The statistically significant factors associated with the quantity of data submitted were: the length of time volunteers were active in the project, whether training took place as part of a paid work day, the difficulty of the sampling procedure, how socially involved volunteers were in the project, average sampling group size, and engagement with online learning modules. Based on our results, we suggest that intrinsic motivation may be important for predicting volunteer retention after training and the number of samples collected subsequently. We suggest that, to maximize the contribution of citizen science to our understanding of the world around us, there is an urgent need to better understand the factors that drive volunteer retention and engagement. In estrogen‐deficient post‐menopausal women, osteoporosis shares a common link with cardiovascular disease risk, including endothelial dysfunction. The current study sought to examine associations between bone mineral density (BMD) and endothelial function in estrogen‐deficient premenopausal women with exercise‐associated menstrual disturbances. Recreationally trained women (24.3 ± 0.8 years; overall mean ± SEM) who were estrogen deficient (amenorrheic or eumenorrheic anovulatory cycles; E2Def; n = 13) or estrogen replete (eumenorrheic ovulatory cycles; E2Rep; n = 14) were studied. Total body and lumbar BMD (L1‐L4) were determined using dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry. Serum markers of oxidative stress (oxidized low‐density lipoprotein; OxLDL), energy deficiency (triiodothyronine), and bone turnover (osteocalcin, c‐telopeptide X, P1NP) were assessed. Estrogen exposure was determined by assessing daily urinary estrone‐3‐glucuronide (E1G) across a monitoring period. Calf blood flow (CBF), an index of endothelial function, was measured using strain‐gauge plethysmography. CBF, total body and L1‐L4 BMD, triiodothyronine and E1G were lower (P < 0.05), and c‐telopeptide crosslinks higher (P < 0.05) in E2Def. Osteocalcin and OxLDL did not differ (P > 0.05) between groups. L1‐L4 BMD, osteocalcin, and E1G were the strongest predictors of CBF (R2=0.615, P < 0.001). CBF was the strongest predictor of L1‐L4 BMD (R2=0.478, P < 0.001). L1‐L4 (r = 0.558, P = 0.008) and CBF (r = 0.534, P = 0.004) were independently correlated with E1G. In young recreationally trained premenopausal women with anovulatory menstrual disturbances, low CBF predicts decreased lumbar BMD, suggesting impaired peripheral endothelial function may predict early unfavorable changes in bone metabolism. This finding may be of relevance in the early detection of cardiovascular and bone health decrements in otherwise healthy estrogen‐deficient premenopausal women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article seeks to provide greater specificity to demands for transparency in the commercial content moderation practices of digital platforms. We identify gaps in knowledge through a thematic analysis of 380 survey responses from individuals who have been the subject of content moderation decisions. We argue that meaningful transparency should be understood as a component of a communicative process of accountability (rendering account) to independent stakeholders. We make specific recommendations for platforms to provide people with clear information about decisions that affect them, including what content is moderated, which rule was breached, and a description of the people and automated processes responsible for identifying content and making the decision. Beyond providing more information to individuals about particular decisions, however, we note the major challenge of improving understanding of content moderation at a systems level. General demands for greater transparency should be reframed to focus on enhanced access to large-scale disaggregated data that can enable new methods and collaborations among academia, civil society, and journalists to make these systems more understandable and accountable. This article provides a history of private sector tracking technologies, examining how the advent of commercial surveillance centered around a logic of data capitalism. Data capitalism is a system in which the commoditization of our data enables an asymmetric redistribution of power that is weighted toward the actors who have access and the capability to make sense of information. It is enacted through capitalism and justified by the association of networked technologies with the political and social benefits of online community, drawing upon narratives that foreground the social and political benefits of networked technologies. I examine its origins in the wake of the dotcom bubble, when technology makers sought to develop a new business model to support online commerce. By leveraging user data for advertising purposes, they contributed to an information environment in which every action leaves behind traces collected by companies for commercial purposes. Through analysis of primary source materials produced by technology makers, journalists, and business analysts, I examine the emergence of data capitalism between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s and its central role in the contemporary information economy. Objective: To develop a triage-based screening algorithm and treatment order-sets aimed at improving the quality of care of all patients with sepsis presenting to our emergency department (ED).Design: Retrospective cohort study conducted during a pre-intervention period from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2011 and a post-intervention period from 1 September 2014 to 30 April 2015.Setting: A large teaching hospital located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with a 35-bed ED.Participants: All patients meeting pre-specified sepsis criteria during the ED encounter.Main Outcome Measures: Process of care measures included time to assessment by emergency physician, lactate measurement, blood culture collection, fluid and antibiotic administration. Intensive care unit (ICU) outcomes including admissions, length of stay (LOS) and deaths were reviewed.Results: There were 346 patients pre-intervention, and 270 patients post-intervention. We significantly improved all process measures including mean time to antibiotics by 60 min (P = 0.003) and proportion of patients receiving fluid resuscitation (64.7% vs. 94.4%, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the number of patients admitted to ICU (P = 0.14). The median ICU LOS was shorter in the post-intervention group [2.0 days (interquartile range (IQR) 1.0-4.5 days) vs. 5.0 days (IQR 1.5-10.8 days), P = 0.04], and there was no difference in in-hospital mortality between groups (P = 0.27).Conclusions: We have demonstrated that a triage-based sepsis screening tool results in expedited and consistent delivery of care, with a significant improvement in initial resuscitation measures. Social media platforms play an increasingly important civic role as platforms for discourse, where we discuss, debate, and share information. This article explores how users make sense of the content moderation systems social media platforms use to curate this discourse. Through a survey of users (n = 519) who have experienced content moderation, I explore users’ folk theories of how content moderation systems work, how they shape the affective relationship between users and platforms, and the steps users take to assert their agency by seeking redress. I find significant impacts of content moderation that go far beyond the questions of freedom of expression that have thus far dominated the debate. Raising questions about what content moderation systems are designed to accomplish, I conclude by conceptualizing an educational, rather than punitive, model for content moderation systems. Objective: Cognitive and behavioral changes, common after severe acquired brain injury (ABI), are important predictors of functional recovery, independence, and quality of life. The Overt Behavior Scale (OBS) is a standardized measure of challenging behaviors following ABI, and has been associated with pre-injury risk factors and psychosocial stressors. Information about the neuropsychological underpinnings of OBS scores is unknown, however. The current study is a preliminary analysis of relationships among OBS scores and neuropsychological data associated with behavioral dysregulation in adults with chronic moderate to severe ABI in a residential neurorehabilitation setting. Method: Participants were 81 adults, ages 27–71 (SD = 10.46), 55 males, with average education of 12.6 years, and average time since injury of 26.34 (SD = 13.35). Participants were administered neuropsychological tests (including NAB Screening Module Memory, Executive Functioning, and Attention Index and subtests, NAB Judgment, and Trails B). The OBS was administered by the psychology provider with input from the treatment team. Results: Exploratory correlations examined the relationship between neuropsychological tests and OBS scores. Results found a significant relationship between the number of challenging behaviors on the OBS and NAB delayed story recall (p < 0.040, r = −0.266). Other correlations between OBS and the NAB and Trails B were not significant. Conclusions: The results raise the possibility that the OBS captures unique aspects of behavioral change that are not measured by traditional neuropsychological tests. Other possible explanations of the data include that the severity of cognitive impairment and physical limitations may be moderating factors, which will be examined in future studies. Objective: Traumatic brain injury has been associated with increased risk of many comorbid neurologic and non-neurologic disorders (Masel & DeWitt, 2010). There is scant literature, however, to describe serial assessment of cognitive changes associated with comorbid non-neurologic disorders and sequelae in patients with chronic, severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). Method: A 60-year-old, right-handed, White male sustained an sTBI at age 15 secondary to a motor vehicle collision and subsequently developed behavioral and substance use problems, before being placed in a long-term residential neurorehabilitation program. He later developed kidney disease, believed to be the result of long-term use of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) that were prescribed to control seizures that developed following his brain injury. He continued to experience seizures, despite taking AEDs. Staff at his residential program reported concerns of declines in cognition and daily functioning over the past three years. Results: Compared to results from two previous evaluations performed approximately four and six years prior, he demonstrated reductions in attention and working memory, processing speed, executive functioning, auditory and reading comprehension, and functional living skills. Expressive language, memory, and visuospatial skills were generally consistent with previous evaluations. Conclusions: Due to significant reductions across multiple cognitive domains, and multiple potential contributing factors, including ongoing seizures, late-stage kidney disease, and a possible superimposed neurodegenerative disorder, it was recommended that the patient continue to undergo serial neurocognitive testing to monitor for further decline and provide etiological clarification.
