A definition of the term "oxymoron" is presented. The term is a figure of speech that yokes together two seemingly contradictory elements and it is a form of condensed paradox. It was an important device in the poetry of Petrarchism and was the trope of the baroque era par excellence since the time of Horace, although it has been a recurrent device in poetry.
