Transmembrane delivery of biologically active nucleic acids is an important process in cells and has inspired one to develop advanced drug delivery techniques. In this contribution, molecular‐level single‐stranded nucleic acid transmembrane carriers are reported based on 3.2 nm long Huc's foldamers (AOrnQ3Q3)8 and (mQ3Q2)8 with linearly and helically aligned positive charges, respectively. These two foldamers not only show very strong DNA affinity via electrostatic interactions but also discriminatively bind single‐stranded DNA (ss‐DNA) and double‐stranded DNA (ds‐DNA), corroborating the importance of precise charge arrangement in the electrostatic interactions. More importantly, these two foldamers are capable of efficiently transporting ss‐DNA across the lipid membranes, and the ss‐DNA transport activity of (AOrnQ3Q3)8 with linearly aligned charges is higher than that of (mQ3Q2)8 with helically aligned charges. Thus a type of novel single‐stranded nucleic acid transmembrane molecular carriers based on positively charged helical foldamers are introduced. Further, effective and enhanced expression in EGFP‐mRNA transfection experiments strongly demonstrates the potential of positively charged foldamers for RNA transmembrane transport and therapy. Cirrus clouds often contain numerous hollow ice crystals, which are distinct in scattering properties from solid ice crystals, and will be challenging to microphysical retrieval and radiative forcing assessment. Currently, hollow ice crystals have not been observed by remote sensing methods, and the estimation of their hollowness is a complex task. To address this issue, the Mixed Modal Hollow Columns (MMHC) model for hollow ice crystals is introduced, and its backscattering properties are computed using the physical optics approximation method. Through comparison with spaceborne lidar observations, we identify a specific type of cirrus associated with the MMHC model for the first time. The visible optical depth of this cirrus is less than or equal to 0.1, and the temperature is between −60 and −40°C. The MMHC characteristic cirrus clouds are prevalent in middle and high latitudes but less comm+on in low latitudes. They exhibit distinct patterns in terms of sea and land distribution as well as seasonal variation. Plain Language Summary: Cirrus clouds typically form at altitudes exceeding 6 km and consist of non‐spherical ice crystals, each with unique optical properties affecting the earth's radiation balance through scattering and absorption. Notably, these crystals include hollow formations, which are distinct in scattering properties from their solid counterparts. The coexistence of hollow and solid ice crystals presents challenges in accurately inverting ice crystal morphology in remote sensing and evaluating radiation properties in climate models. To address these complexities, we propose a MMHC model. Through analysis of spaceborne lidar observational data, we identify characteristic cirrus clouds associated with such type of ice crystals and study the global distribution and seasonal distribution of this kind of cirrus clouds. Atmospheric water vapor is a crucial factor in the Earth's water cycle. As an important greenhouse gas, changes in the spatio‐temporal distribution of atmospheric water vapor can contribute to the occurrence of various extreme weather phenomena. Lidar, with its high spatial and temporal resolutions, has great potential for applications in water vapor profile detection. Raman lidar and differential absorption lidar (DIAL) have been successfully used to detect atmospheric water vapor. System calibration is crucial to ensure that the measured profile accurately represents the concentration profile of atmospheric water vapor. Choosing an effective system calibration method can ensure the accuracy of long‐term lidar measurements. This paper reviews the latest progress and applications of atmospheric water vapor lidar calibration in recent years. The basic principles of Raman lidar and DIAL calibration are introduced. Various methods and benefits of system calibration are discussed. Raman lidar has three commonly used calibration methods: external calibration, internal calibration, and hybrid calibration methods. The most commonly used method is external calibration based on radiosondes. DIAL is usually implemented with an advantageous self‐calibration method. During 14–16 March 2021, a large-scale dust storm event occurred in the northern region of China, and it was considered the most intense event in the past decade. This study employs observation data for PM2.5 and PM10 from the air quality monitoring station, the HYSPLIT model, ground-based polarized Lidar networks, AGRI payload data from Fengyun satellites and CALIPSO satellite Lidar data to jointly explore and scrutinize the three-dimensional spatial and temporal characteristics of aerosol transport. Firstly, by integrating meteorological data for PM2.5 and PM10, the air quality is assessed across six stations within the Lidar network during the dust storm. Secondly, employing a backward trajectory tracking model, the study elucidates sources of dust at the Lidar network sites. Thirdly, deploying a newly devised portable infrared 1064 nm Lidar and a pulsed 532 nm Lidar, a ground-based Lidar observation network is established for vertical probing of transboundary dust transport within the observed region. Finally, by incorporating cloud imagery from Fengyun satellites and CALIPSO satellite Lidar data, this study revealed the classification of dust and the height distribution of dust layers at pertinent sites within the Lidar observation network. The findings affirm that the eastward movement and southward compression of the intensifying Mongolian cyclone led to severe dust storm weather in western and southern Mongolia, as well as Inner Mongolia, further transporting dust into northern, northwestern, and northeastern parts of China. This dust event wielded a substantial impact on a broad expanse in northern China, manifesting in localized dust storms in Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Gansu, and surrounding areas. In essence, the dust emanated from the deserts in Mongolia and northwest China, encompassing both deserts and the Gobi region. The amalgamation of ground-based and spaceborne Lidar observations conclusively establishes that the distribution height of dust in the source region ranged from 3 to 5 km. Influenced by high-pressure systems, the protracted transport of dust over extensive distances prompted a gradual reduction in its distribution height owing to sedimentation. The comprehensive analysis of pertinent research data and information collectively affirms the precision and efficacy of the three-dimensional aerosol monitoring conducted by the ground-based Lidar network within the region. Ozone near the surface of the atmosphere directly stimulates the human respiratory tract and affects human health. In recent years, ozone pollution in China has become a serious problem, so controlling ozone pollution is an urgent task. Differential absorption lidar is a useful tool for detecting ozone concentration, but it cannot receive complete signals in the lower hundreds of meters because of the overlap factor. CCD imaging lidar technology can effectively solve this problem. A fitting method of inverting the ozone concentration profile using ultraviolet differential CCD imaging lidar is proposed in this paper. The effect of three different types of aerosol extinction coefficient, three different types of ozone concentration, and five different types of aerosol wavelength index on retrieving ozone concentrations was analyzed using simulation. For clean aerosol, the relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration is less than 5%. As to polluted aerosol, the relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration is less than 10%. As to heavily polluted aerosol, the relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration is less than 25%. The results show that the larger the value of the aerosol extinction coefficient, the larger the relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration; meanwhile, the lower the ozone concentration, the larger the relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration; at the same time, the further the aerosol wavelength index deviates from 1, the larger the relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration. The relative error of the retrieved ozone concentration in this case was about 4%. It is shown that this fitting method of retrieving ozone concentrations is reasonable and feasible. In recent years, the applications of lidars for remote sensing of the environment have been expanding and deepening. Among them, continuous-wave (CW) range-resolved (RR) S-lidars (S comes from Scheimpflug) have proven to be a new and promising class of non-contact and non-perturbing laser sensors. They use low-power CW diode lasers, an unconventional depth-of-field extension technique and the latest advances in nanophotonic technologies to realize compact and cost-effective remote sensors. The purpose of this paper is to propose a generalized methodology to justify the selection of a set of non-energetic S-lidar parameters for a wide range of applications and distance scales, from a bench-top test bed to a 10-km path. To set the desired far and near borders of operating range by adjusting the optical transceiver, it was shown how to properly select the lens plane and image plane tilt angles, as well as the focal length, the lidar base, etc. For a generalized analysis of characteristic relations between S-lidar parameters, we introduced several dimensionless factors and criteria applicable to different range scales, including an S-lidar-specific magnification factor, angular function, dynamic range, "one and a half" condition, range-domain quality factor, etc. It made possible to show how to reasonably select named and dependent non-energetic parameters, adapting them to specific applications. Finally, we turned to the synthesis task by demonstrating ways to achieve a compromise between a wide dynamic range and high range resolution requirements. The results of the conducted analysis and synthesis allow increasing the validity of design solutions for further promotion of S-lidars for environmental remote sensing and their better adaptation to a broad spectrum of specific applications and range scales. The article proposes a methodology for analyzing the performance of S-lidars (S comes from Scheimpflug) as a new class of environmental remote sensors operating under conditions of wide variability of optical weather and sky background brightness. The novelty of the problem statement, the methods used and the results obtained are determined by their application to laser sensing systems with unconventional design principles and the consequent need to revise the traditional ways of assessing their potential capabilities. The research method is based on a dimensionless-parametric approach, which allows comparing phenomena and systems of different scales and combining complementary characteristics and parameters. Effects of the dimensionless optical weather factor on lidar potential are shown being investigated under various environmental conditions, from the clear atmosphere through haze and mist to fog when probing in Vis/SWIR spectral bands and using Si/InGaAs detector arrays. It is shown exactly how and to what extent the significant differences in their spectral sensitivity and internal noise parameters are susceptible to the wide spectral and energy variability of the sky background brightness observed at very different angles to the Sun. A detailed analysis of the two most important influencing factors within the system, "S-Lidar instrument + Optical weather + External background source", taking into account their wide variability, allowed us to describe their joint nonlinear influence and, thus, to anticipate the imposed limitations. The proposed dimensionless-parametric concept for predicting the potential capabilities of S-lidars with Si/InGaAs arrays is aimed at expanding applications of this rapidly developing class of remote sensors in a wide variety of environments. In order to conduct more thorough research on the structural characteristics of the atmosphere and the distribution and transmission of atmospheric pollution, the use of remote sensing technology for multi-dimensional detection of the atmosphere is needed. A light-weight, low-volume, low-cost, easy-to-use and low-maintenance mini Infrared Lidar (mIRLidar) sensor is developed for the first time. The model of lidar is established, and the key optical parameters of the mIRLidar are optimized through simulation, in which wavelength of laser, energy of pulse laser, diameter of telescope, field of view (FOV), and bandwidth of filter are included. The volume and weight of the lidar system are effectively reduced through optimizing the structural design and designing a temperature control system to ensure the stable operation of the core components. The mIRLidar system involved a 1064 nm laser (the pulse laser energy 15 μJ, the repetition frequency 5 kHz), a 100 mm aperture telescope (the FOV 1.5 mrad), a 0.5 nm bandwidth of filter and an APD, where the lidar has a volume of 200 mm × 200 mm × 420 mm and weighs about 13.5 kg. It is shown that the lidar can effectively detect three-dimensional distribution and transmission of aerosol and atmospheric pollution within a 5 km detection range, from Horizontal, scanning and navigational atmospheric measurements. Sodium‐ion batteries are regarded as the energy storage of choice for large‐scale applications due to their ample resource and low cost. However, their practical application has been largely retarded by the lack of efficient and stable anodes capable of storing a large amount of Na+ ions reversibly. In this work, we introduce the concept of homojunction into the design of sodium anodes by growing TiO2 nanowires composed of both anatase and bronze intimately interwoven. The interplay between the two phases brings abundant boundaries and interfaces, which drastically increase the storage sites and facilitate the transport of Na+ ions. As a result, it reveals robust Na+ storage, affording a capability of 140 mAh g−1 at a high rate of 20 C and retaining 85 % of the initial capacity after 3000 cycles at 5 C. Furthermore, the practice of TiO2 homojunction has been explored by pairing it with Na3V2(PO4)2O2F cathode, thereby demonstrating the potential of designing homojunction as a promising materials strategy in rechargeable batteries. The depolarization ratio and backscattering cross sections have been calculated for shapes and size of ice crystals that are typical in cirrus clouds. The calculations are performed in the physical-optics approximation. It is shown that the depolarization ratio approaches some constant when the size of the crystals becomes much larger than the incident wavelength. For the transparent ice crystals, when absorption is absent, the magnitude of this constant strongly depends on crystal shapes. This fact allows inferring the crystal shape from magnitudes of the depolarization ratio in lidar signals. For the lidar wavelengths, where absorption of light is considerable, the depolarization ratio of lidar signals can be used for inferring crystal sizes. Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is an active remote sensing system. Lidar echo signal is non-linear and non-stationary, which is often accompanied by various noises. In order to filter out the noise and extract valid signal information, a suitable method should be chosen for noise reduction. Some denoising methods are commonly used, such as the wavelet transform (WT), the empirical mode decomposition (EMD), the variational mode decomposition (VMD), and their improved algorithms. In this paper, a new denoising method named the WT-VMD joint algorithm based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA), for lidar signal is selected by comparative experiment analysis. It is shown that this method is the most suitable one with the maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the minimum root-mean-square error (RMSE), and a relatively small indicator of smoothness when it is used in three kinds (50, 100, and 1000 pulses) of simulate lidar signals. The SNR is increased by 138.5%, 77.8% and 42.8% and the RMSE is decreased by 81.8%, 72.0% and 68.8% when being used to the three kinds of cumulative signal without pollution. Then, the SNR is increased by 83.3%, 60.4% and 24.0% and the RMSE is decreased by 70.8%, 66.0% and 50.5% when being used to the three kinds of cumulative signal with aerosol and clouds. The WT-VMD joint algorithm based on SSA is used in the denoising process for the actual lidar signal, showing extraordinary denoising effect and will improve the inversion accuracy of the lidar signal. On 15 March 2021, the strongest sandstorm of the last 10 years occurred in China. The MODIS, MPL lidar, EDM 180, ADI 2080 and Meteorological observation instruments were used to observe the dust in Jinan, China, while the HYSPLIT model was also employed to find the source. It was found that the dust originated from Mongolia and the Gobi desert and was transported to Jinan at night on 14th March, lasting until the 18th. Multi-layer dust was observed, of which the dust below the height of 1 km was strongest with the VDR about 0.2 and the maximum extinction coefficient up to 3 km−1. The values of AOD and AE were greater than 2 and less than 0.25, respectively. The mass concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 increased rapidly, and were up to 573 µg/m3 and 3406 µg/m3, respectively. Additionally, the mass concentration ratio decreased rapidly, with a minimum of 17%. The particle size of the dust was mainly distributed between 0.58–6.50 micros due to larger particles increasing dramatically; simultaneously, both the proportion and the value for calcium ions in PM2.5 went up. The dust had an obvious impact on the vertical structure of the air temperature, resulting in occurrence of a strong inversion layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All elements of the scattering matrix have been numerically studied for particles of irregular shapes whose size is much larger than incident wavelength. The calculations are performed in the physical optics approximation for a particle size of 20 μm at a wavelength of 0.532 μm. Here the scattered intensity reveals the backscattering coherent peak. It is shown that the polarization elements of the matrix reveal the surges within the backscattering peak. The angular width of the surges does not practically depend on particle shape, but depends on the particle size. It is shown that these surges are created by interference between the conjugate scattered waves propagating in the inverse directions. AZ91‐0.9Ce alloy with a thickness of 8 mm is prepared by die casting. The formation process of main compounds in the alloy, the role of main compounds in fracture process, the main crack source, and crack propagation path of the alloy are studied. Results show that AZ91‐0.9Ce alloy is mainly composed of α‐Mg matrix, Mg17Al12 compound, Al4Ce compound, and a small amount of Al–Mn–Ce ternary compound. Among them, Al4Ce is formed prior to the Mg17Al12 compound. Mg17Al12 is formed by eutectic reaction, and Al–Mn–Ce ternary compound is formed at a later stage of solidification. Mg17Al12 and Al4Ce are the main crack sources of the alloy during the fracture process. Crack locations in the alloy mainly include grain boundaries, phase boundaries, and Mg17Al12 and Al4Ce compounds. The fracture mechanism of the alloy is that with the increase of load cracks occur at Mg17Al12 and Al4Ce compounds and connect with each other through intergranular and a small amount of transgranular to form the main crack. With the load continues to increase, the main crack gradually expands until alloy fracture failure. The continuous network distribution along grain boundaries of the Mg17Al12 compound is an important reason for intergranular fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metals such as Sb and Bi are important anode materials for sodium‐ion batteries because they feature a large capacity and low reaction potential. However, the accumulation of stress and strain upon sodium storage leads to the formation of cracks and fractures, resulting in electrode failure upon extended cycling. In this work, the design and construction of BixSb1−x bimetallic alloy films with a compositional gradient to mitigate the intrinsic structural instability is reported. In the gradient film, the top is rich in Sb, contributing to the capacity, while the bottom is rich in Bi, helping to reduce the stress in the interphase between the film and the substrate. Significantly, this gradient film affords a high reversible capacity of ≈500 mAh g−1 and sustains 82% of the initial capacity after 1000 cycles at 2 C, drastically outperforming the solid‐solution counterpart and many recently reported alloy anodes. Such a gradient design can open up the possibilities to engineering high‐capacity anode materials that are structurally unstable due to the huge volume variation upon energy storage. Purpose: This study aimed to isolate effective erythromycin-degrading fungi and determine the characteristics and pathway of degradation. Methods: Erythromycin-degrading fungi were isolated from erythromycin-contaminated samples using a standard enrichment and isolation method. The degradation characteristics were investigated in mineral salt medium (MSM) with erythromycin as a sole carbon source. Key degradation intermediates were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS) and used to deduce the erythromycin degradation pathway of strain RJJ-2. Results: A novel erythromycin-degrading fungus RJJ-2, was isolated from a contaminated sample. Based on its morphology and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence, the strain was 100% similar to P. oxalicum (MN759650) and named P. oxalicum RJJ-2. The strain RJJ-2 degraded 84.88% erythromycin after 96-h incubation at 35 °C and pH 6.0 in MSM with erythromycin (100 mg L−1) as the sole carbon source. Optimal degradation conditions for P. oxalicum RJJ-2 were 35 °C, and pH 6.0 with 0.1% ammonium sulfate supplementation. HPLC–MS analysis indicated that the main degradation intermediates were 3-depyranosyloxy erythromycin A, cladinose, desosamine, and 7,12-dyhydroxy-6-deoxyerythronolide B. It was inferred that the erythromycin was degraded to 3-depyranosyloxy erythromycin A by a glycoside hydrolase in the initial reaction. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that P. oxalicum RJJ-2 is a novel erythromycin-degrading strain, which can provide a new eco-friendly and cost-effective approach for the disposal of erythromycin fermentation wastes and other hazardous chemicals. The residual erythromycin in fermentation waste can pollute the environment and threaten human health. However, there are no effective approaches to remedy this issue. In this study, an erythromycin‐degrading bacterium named RJJ‐61 was isolated and identified as a strain of Delftia lacustris based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. The degradation ability of this strain was also evaluated; it could degrade 45.18% of erythromycin at 35°C in 120 h. Furthermore, the key degradation gene ereA was cloned from strain RJJ‐61 and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21; the molecular weight of the expressed protein was ~45 kDa. The enzyme activity of EreA was 108.0 mU ml−1 at 35°C and pH 7.0. Finally, the EreA protein was used to degrade erythromycin from mycelial dregs and 50% diluted solution, and the removal rates in them were 41.42% and 69.78%, respectively. Erythromycin pollution is an important risk to the ecosystem and human health worldwide. Thus, it is urgent to develop effective approaches to decontaminate erythromycin. In this study, we successfully isolated a novel erythromycin-degrading fungus from an erythromycin-contaminated site. The erythromycin biodegradation characteristics were investigated in mineral salt medium with erythromycin as the sole carbon and energy source. The metabolites of erythromycin degraded by fungus were identified and used to derive the degradation pathway. Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses, the isolated strain was named Curvularia sp. RJJ-5 (MN759651). Optimal degradation conditions for strain RJJ-5 were 30°C, and pH 6.0 with 100 mg L−1 erythromycin substrate. The strain could degrade 75.69% erythromycin under this condition. The following metabolites were detected: 3-depyranosyloxy erythromycin A, 7,12-dyhydroxy-6-deoxyerythronolide B, 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexamethyl-3,5,6,11,12,13-hexahydroxy-9-ketopentadecanoic acid and cladinose. It was deduced that the erythromycin A was degraded to 3-depyranosyloxy erythromycin A by glycoside hydrolase in the initial reaction. These results imply that Curvularia sp. RJJ-5 is a novel erythromycin-degrading fungus that can hydrolyze erythromycin using a glycoside hydrolase and has great potential for removing erythromycin from mycelial dreg and the contaminated environment. Rechargeable batteries with flexibility can find tremendous applications in wearable and bendable electronics. One central mission for the advancement of such high‐performance batteries is the exploration of flexible anodes with electrochemical and mechanical robustness. Herein reported is a robust and flexible sodium‐ion anode based on self‐supported hematite nanoarray grown on carbon cloth. The ammonia treatment that results in dual doping of both nitrogen and low‐valent iron renders surface reactivity and electric conductivity to the material. The dual‐doped hematite arrays afford a robust activity for sodium storage, exhibiting reversible capacities of 895 and 382 mAh g−1 at current rates of 0.1 and 5 A g−1, respectively, or 615 and 356 mAh g−1 by removing the contribution of the substrate. They also sustain 85% of the initial capacity upon 200 cycles at 0.2 A g−1. To demonstrate the flexibility, full cells composed of a hematite array anode and Na3V2(PO4)3/C cathode are assembled. The cell is capable of affording an energy density of 201 Wh kg−1 and sustaining repeated bending without performance decay, demonstrating a significant potential in practical application. The need for high-energy batteries has driven the development of binder-free electrode architectures. However, the weak bonding between the electrode particles and the current collector cannot withstand the severe volume change of active materials upon battery cycling, which largely limit the large-scale application of such electrodes. Using tin nanoarrays electrochemically deposited on copper substrate as an example, here we demonstrate a strategy of strengthening the connection between electrode and current collector by thermally alloying tin and copper at their interface. The locally formed tin-copper alloys are electron-conductive and meanwhile electrochemically inactive, working as an ideal "glue" robustly bridging tin and copper to survive harsh cycling conditions in sodium ion batteries. The working mechanism of the alloy "glue" is further characterized through a combination of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, atomic structural analysis and in situ X-ray diffraction, presenting itself as a promising strategy for engineering binder-free electrode with endurable performance. The authors here report a binder-free electrode based on tin nanoarrays deposited on copper substrate. It is found that the locally formed electrochemically inactive tin-copper alloys work as a glue that bridges tin and copper to survive harsh cycling conditions in sodium ion batteries. A multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) instrument was deployed in May and June 2016 at a monitoring station (37.18 ∘ N, 114.36 ∘ E) in the suburban area of Xingtai, which is one of the most polluted cities in the North China Plain (NCP), during the Atmosphere-Aerosol-Boundary Layer-Cloud (A 2 BC) experiment and Air chemistry Research In Asia (ARIAs) joint experiments to derive tropospheric vertical profiles of NO2 , SO2 , HONO, HCHO, CHOCHO and aerosols. Aerosol optical depths derived from MAX-DOAS were found to be consistent with collocated sun-photometer measurements. Also the derived near-surface aerosol extinction and HCHO mixing ratio agree well with the coincident visibility meter and in situ HCHO measurements, with mean HCHO near-surface mixing ratios of ∼3.5 ppb. Underestimations of MAX-DOAS results compared to in situ measurements of NO2 (∼60 %) and SO2 (∼20 %) are found expectedly due to vertical and horizontal inhomogeneity of trace gases. Vertical profiles of aerosols and NO2 and SO2 are reasonably consistent with those measured by a collocated Raman lidar and aircraft spirals over the station. The deviations can be attributed to differences in sensitivity as a function of altitude and substantial horizontal gradients of pollutants. Aerosols, HCHO and CHOCHO profiles typically extended to higher altitudes (with 75 % integrated column located below ∼1.4 km) than NO2 , SO2 and HONO did (with 75 % integrated column below ∼0.5 km) under polluted conditions. Lifted layers were systematically observed for all species (except HONO), indicating accumulation, secondary formation or long-range transport of the pollutants at higher altitudes. Maximum values routinely occurred in the morning for NO2 , SO2 and HONO but occurred at around noon for aerosols, HCHO and CHOCHO, mainly dominated by photochemistry, characteristic upslope–downslope circulation and planetary boundary layer (PBL) dynamics. Significant day-to-day variations are found for all species due to the effect of regional transport and changes in synoptic pattern analysed with the backward propagation approach based on HYSPLIT trajectories. Low pollution was often observed for air masses from the north-west (behind cold fronts), and high pollution was observed from the southern areas such as industrialized Wu'an. The contribution of regional transport for the pollutants measured at the site during the observation period was estimated to be about 20 % to 30 % for trace gases and about 50 % for aerosols. In addition, agricultural burning events impacted the day-to-day variations in HCHO, CHOCHO and aerosols. It needs to be noted that although several MAX-DOAS measurements of trace gases and aerosols in the NCP area have been reported in previous studies, this study is the first work to derive a comprehensive set of vertical profiles of NO2 , SO2 , HONO, HCHO, CHOCHO and aerosols from measurements of one MAX-DOAS instrument. Also, so far, the validation of MAX-DOAS profile results by comparison with various surface in situ measurements as well as profile measurements from lidar and aircraft is scarce. Moreover, the backward propagation approach for characterizing the contributions of regional transport of pollutants from different regions was applied to the MAX-DOAS results of trace gases and aerosols for the first time. In this study, 765 instantaneous MERRA-2 (second Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications) aerosol optical depth (AOD) values at 550 nm were compared with those of a sky radiometer in Hefei (31.90° N, 117.17° E) for the different seasons from March 2007 to February 2010. The correlation coefficients (R) were 0.88, 0.83, 0.88, and 0.80 in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The MERRA-2 AOD is also compared with MODIS Aqua AOD in the entire Yangtze River Delta, and good agreement has been obtained. The MERRA-2 AOD product was used to analyze the spatial distribution and temporal variation of the annual, seasonal and monthly means of the AOD over the Yangtze River Delta region from 1980 to 2016 (37 years). The mean values of the MERRA-2 AOD during the study period show that the AOD (between 0.45 and 0.55) in the northern area of the Yangtze River Delta was higher than that (between 0.30 and 0.45) of the southern area. The northwest part of the Yangtze River Delta had the highest mean AOD values (between 0.50 and 0.55). The AOD increased slowly in the 1980s and 1990s, followed by a rapid increase between 2001 and 2010. An AOD decrease can be seen from 2011 to 2016. The mean AOD in each month is discussed. High AOD was observed in March, April, and June, while low AOD could be seen in September, October, November, and December. Three different area types (large cities, medium-sized cities, and remote areas) had nearly the same annual AOD variation. Large cities had the highest AOD (about 0.48), while remote areas had the lowest (about 0.42). In summer, the AOD in remote areas was much lower than that in cities. The AOD variational trend over the Yangtze River Delta was studied during two periods. The increasing trend could be seen over the entire Yangtze River Delta in each month from 1980 to 2009. A decreasing trend was found all over the Yangtze River Delta in January, February, March, July, October, and November, whereas in other months, some parts witnessed increasing AOD while others saw a decreasing trend between 2010 and 2016. Vertical structures of aerosols from the ground to about 1,000 m altitude in Beijing were measured with a balloon-borne optical particle counter. The results showed that, in hazy days, there were inversions at approximately 500-600 m, below which the particulate matters were well mixed vertically, while the concentration of particles decreased sharply above the mixing layer. Electron microscopic observation of the particles collected with the balloon-borne impactor indicates that the composition of particles is different according to weather conditions in the boundary mixing layer of Beijing city and suggests that dust particles are always dominant in coarse-mode particles. Interestingly, sea-salt particles are frequently identified, suggesting the importance of marine air inflow to the Beijing area even in summer. The Ca-rich spherical particles are also frequently identified, suggesting chemical modification of dust particle by NOx or emission of CaO and others from local emission. Additionally, those types of particles showed higher concentration above the mixing layer under the relatively calm weather condition of summer, suggesting the importance of local-scale convection found in summer which rapidly transported anthropogenic particles above the mixing layer. Lidar extinction profiles qualitatively have good consistency with the balloon-borne measurements. Attenuation effects of laser pulse intensity are frequently observed due to high concentration of particulate matter in the Beijing atmosphere, and therefore quantitative agreement of lidar return and aerosol concentration can be hardly observed during dusty condition. Comparing the depolarization ratio obtained from the lidar measurements with the balloon-borne measurements, the contribution of the dry sea-salt particles, in addition to the dust particles, is suggested as an important factor causing depolarization ratio in the Beijing atmosphere. The impacts of haze emphasized significance of hazards for human activities and importance of observations of aerosol vertical distribution. This study aimed to analyze the aerosol vertical distribution during a haze case at temporal and spatial aspects, using space-borne and ground-based Lidar observations over Jinhua Basin, Zhejiang province, as well as the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HSPLIT) model and optical situ monitoring at Jinhua site. The results highlight three pollution peaks above the surface located in the upper and lower boundary layer in Jinhua Basin. The trajectory analysis shows the pollutants inside and outside the planetary boundary layer from different sources. Planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) obtained from the space-borne Lidar observations was compared with that from ground-based Lidar observations. The absolute error between the two instruments is about 0.193 km. It is illustrated that the space-borne Lidar is an effective instrument for obtaining regional aerosol pollution in vertical section. Oils in food waste can pollute the environment and negatively affect human health. Biodegradation is a promising method for disposing of waste edible oils. In this study, an oil-degrading bacterium was isolated from kitchen waste for efficient degradation of edible oils. Its growth and oil degradation characteristics were investigated in basic salt medium with edible oils as the sole carbon and energy source; the triacylglycerol lipase gene (EC 3.1.1.3) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. A novel oil-degrading bacterium assigned as IUMR B67 was successfully isolated. Morphological and molecular analyses revealed that strain IUMR B67 belongs to Kosakonia cowanii. After 144 h of incubation, the oil degradation rate at 37°C was 95.80%. Optimal conditions for IUMR B67 were recorded at 37°C and 0.1% NaCl with 0.1% ammonium sulfate supplementation. The lipase gene of strain IUMR B67 was determined to be 912 base pairs, and the lipase activity of the expressed protein was 3.02 U/mL, which was significantly higher than the control (P  < 0.05). Overall, Kosakonia cowanii IUMR B67 is a novel edible oil-degrading strain that can hydrolyze oil via its lipase activity, which may be useful in the disposal of oils and oily food waste. The new side‐scattering lidar using two charge‐coupled device cameras and one CW laser is developed to measure the near‐ground aerosol profiles in haze day, which is a powerful tool and is most interested for the environmental and meteorological agencies. A new inversion method for the side‐scattering lidar to retrieve the aerosol backscattering coefficient is proposed for the first time, which is based on the aerosol backscattering coefficient measured by itself at the ground as a constrained condition. Numerical simulation is carried out to analyze the convergence of this new method. Case studies indicate that this method is reasonable and feasible. The method is especially suitable for the measurement in the foggy and hazy weathers even during the daytime, and it does not need a simultaneous backscattering lidar as the reference any more. Plain Language Summary: The CCD lidar is a new technique for aerosol observation in haze day; it is different from traditional backscattering lidar. For one thing, the detecting of aerosol profiles near the ground is really improved by this CCD lidar because there is no overlap function, instead of the traditional lidar. Results of the study of microphysical characteristics of cirrus clouds in Hefei, China, with a multiwavelength polarization lidar are presented. Measurements were carried out from December 2010, to February 2013. In this work, we consider the only dependable parameter of lidar signals, i.e., the linear depolarization ratio measured at a wavelength of 532 μm. The dependences of depolarization ratios on both the size of ice crystals and the distribution of their distortion angles were calculated in this work for the first time. These results were used for retrieving, with some uncertainty, the microphysical parameters of cirrus clouds observed in Hefei during that period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cloud is an important factor that affects weather and climate, and the vertical distribution of cloud determines its role in the atmospheric radiation transfer process. In this paper, the characteristics of different cloud types and their vertical cloud base height distributions over Eastern China are investigated with a four-year 2B-CLDCLASS-LIDAR product. The intercomparison of cloud base height distribution from ground-based lidar, CloudSat and CALIPSO measurements was studied with observations over the Hefei and Jinhua areas. The 2B-CLDCLASS-LIDAR product has the potential to uncover geographical and seasonal changes in cloud base height distribution over the Hefei area and Jinhua area, which may be beneficial for local climate models, although the CPR on CloudSat suffers from surface clutter or blind-zones. The results show that for non-precipitation cloud over the defined region (Eastern China), the occurrence frequencies of altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds are 29.4%, 21.0%, and 18.9%, respectively. The vertical occurrence frequencies of their cloud base heights are 0.5–8.5 km, below 3.5 km, and 5.5–17.0 km. The precipitation clouds are dominated by nimbostratus (48.4%), cumulus (17.9%), and deep convective clouds (24.2%), and their cloud base heights are all below 3.0 km. The cloud base height distributions have large differences below 3 km between the satellite measurement and ground-based measurement over Hefei site. Between the Hefei site and Jinhua site, the difference in cloud base height distribution measured by ground-based lidar is in good agreement with that measured by satellite over their matched grid boxes. Over the Hefei site, the vertical occurrence frequencies of cloud base height measured by ground-based lidar are higher than the satellite measurement within 0–0.5 km during all the seasons. It is suggested that more cloudy days may result from the sufficient water vapor environment in Hefei. In summer, the occurrence frequency of the cloud base height distribution at a height of 0–2.0 km is lower than other seasons over Jinhua city, which may be associated with the local weather system. Over the Jinhua site, the difference in seasonal cloud base height distribution based on satellite is in good agreement with that based on ground-based lidar. However, it does not appear over Hefei site.
