Aims: To examine the association between 24 literature‐based single nucleotide polymorphisms and diabetic kidney disease in Chinese people with type 2 diabetes. Methods and results: Twenty‐four candidate diabetic kidney disease‐susceptible single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped in 208 participants with type 2 diabetes and diabetic kidney disease and 200 participants with type 2 diabetes without diabetic kidney disease (case and control groups, respectively), together with 206 healthy participants using MassARRAY. Rs11643718 in the SLC12A3 gene was associated with diabetic kidney disease in the recessive model after adjusting for confounding factors, such as age and gender (adjusted odds ratio 2.056, 95% CI 1.120–3.776; P = 0.020). Meta‐analyses further confirmed the association (P = 0.002). In addition, participants with the GG genotype had worse renal function and more albuminuria than those with the AA+AG genotype (P < 0.05). Renal section immunohistochemistry was conducted in participants with type 2 diabetes, diabetic kidney disease and AA+AG or GG genotypes and in participants with glomerular minor lesions. Together with data from the Nephroseq database, it was shown that the abundance of SLC12A3 was reduced in patients with the GG genotype, while elevated expression of SLC12A3 was associated with better renal function. In addition, rs10951509 and rs1345365 in ELMO1, which were determined to be in high linkage disequilibrium by SHEsis software, were also associated with diabetic kidney disease (adjusted P = 0.010 and 0.015, respectively). Conclusions: The G allele and GG genotype of SLC12A3 rs11643718 are associated with the development of diabetic kidney disease in a Chinese population with type 2 diabetes. What's new?: Many diabetic kidney disease (DKD)‐susceptible single‐nucleotide polymorphims (SNPs) in type 2 diabetes have been identified; however, the relationship between some SNPs and DKD is still controversial. The effect of several SNPs on DKD in Chinese populations with type 2 diabetes is also unclear.This study found that the G allele and GG genotype in SLC12A3 rs11643718, as well as the G allele and GG+AG genotype in ELMO1 rs10951509 and rs1345365, may be risk factors for DKD in Chinese type 2 diabetes populations.Analysing these genotypes in people with type 2 diabetes will be helpful in identifying populations with high risk of DKD. New experimental rate coefficients are reported for the H2(D2)+CN→H(D)CN+H(D) reactions over the temperature range 209 to 740 K for H2 and 250 to 740 K for D2. Previous reduced dimensionality reaction probabilities for the reaction with H2, and new ones for the reaction with D2 are used to obtain analogous rate coefficients. In addition, reaction probabilities and rate coefficients for vibrationally excited reactants H2(v=1), D2(v=1), or CN(v=1) are presented. Comparisons of the calculated rate coefficients are made with the new and previous experiments, especially those of Sims and Smith [Chem. Phys. Lett. 149, 565 (1988)]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water, methanol and ethanol extracts of Evodia rutaecarpa were tested for antinociceptive activity, which were correlated with the contents of evodiamine, rutaecarpine and evodine. Determination of contents was achieved by chromatographic techniques. Extracts were evaluated for antinociceptive activities using hot-plate test; acetic acid-induced writhing test and formalin test. All three extracts of Evodia rutaecarpa showed antinociceptive activities but the ethanol extract exhibited better effect. The better antinociceptive activity appeared to be related to higher contents of evodiamine, rutaecarpine and evodine in ethanol extract of Evodia rutaecarpa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe the first cases of familial pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis, a disorder in which capillaries in the lungs proliferate. Three siblings died from primary pulmonary hypertension. One developed pulmonary congestion preterminally after vasodilator treatment. The inheritance pattern seems autosomal recessive. Lung specimens obtained in two siblings showed extensive pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis, with normal capillaries proliferating into veins and alveoli. Including our patients, four of the nine patients with pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis have presented with the clinical picture of primary pulmonary hypertension. Thus, pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis should be considered as a histologic pattern of primary pulmonary hypertension. Most other cases of pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis have been similar to pulmonary veno-occlusive disease. Recently, disorders involving the proliferation of cytologically normal capillaries have been termed angiogenic diseases. Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis may be an angiogenic disease. Bleomycin is the antineoplastic agent used most commonly for the treatment of malignant pleural effusion. It is absorbed rapidly from the pleural space and does not elicit pleurodesis in the normal rabbit pleura. Mitoxantrone is a new antineoplastic that differs from bleomycin in that it binds to membranes. Accordingly it might remain in the pleural space for a longer period and produce a pleurodesis. The objective of this project was to determine whether mitoxantrone is an effective sclerosant in an experimental model in rabbits. The following medications were instilled intrapleurally in anesthetized male rabbits: 35 mg/kg tetracycline or 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 mg/kg mitoxantrone. The animals were killed at 28 days and the pleural spaces assessed grossly for pleurodesis and microscopically for fibrosis and inflammation. The mean degree of gross pleurodesis did not differ significantly in the rabbits that received tetracycline (3.8 ± 0.4) and in the rabbits that received 2 mg/kg mitoxantrone (3.2 ± 1.3). The degree of pleural and lung inflammation was significantly greater after mitoxantrone than after tetracycline, both ipsilaterally and contralaterally. The mortality after the highest dose of mitoxantrone was 50%. From this study we conclude that the intrapleural administration of mitoxantrone in rabbits can produce a pleurodesis. The histologic picture after mitoxantrone administration differs markedly from that after tetracycline injection. After mitoxantrone injection there are many more inflammatory cells present on the side that received the injection, and there is much more fibrosis and inflammation in the contralateral pleura and lung. The model of pleural fibrosis following intrapleural mitoxantrone may be useful for the study of pleural fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
