Introduction: The aim of this prospective and comparative study was to investigate the association of perimetry parameters on visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes with diffractive extended depth-of-focus (EDoF) and monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). Methods: In cataract eyes with medicinally controlled POAG with no defects in the central visual field and mean deviation (MD) values of − 10 dB or better, EDoF and monofocal IOLs with the same platform except for echelette optics for EDoF were implanted in 22 and 24 eyes, respectively. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), contrast sensitivity at 3 to 18 cycles per degree (cpd), and automated perimetry using 30-2 and 10-2 Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm programs were examined 3 months postoperatively. The influences of perimetry parameters including MD, foveal sensitivity (FS), and the means of the central four points (central MD and central FS) on CDVA and contrast sensitivity were evaluated using linear and multiple regression analyses. Results: In POAG eyes with EDoF IOLs, contrast sensitivities at 12 and 18 cpd were associated with 30-2 and 10-2 perimetry parameters. In POAG eyes with monofocal IOLs, associations of 30-2 parameters were found in CDVA and 3-cpd contrast sensitivity. Conclusions: The visual function of POAG eyes with EDoF IOLs was associated with perimetry parameters in high spatial frequency contrast sensitivity, which was different from that of POAG eyes with monofocal IOL. Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited optic nerve disease primarily caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The peak of onset is typically between 15 and 30 years, but variability exists. Misdiagnosis, often as inflammatory optic neuritis, delays treatment, compounded by challenges in timely genetic diagnosis. Given the availability of a specific treatment for LHON, its early diagnosis is imperative to ensure therapeutic appropriateness. This work gives an updated guidance about LHON differential diagnosis to clinicians dealing also with multiple sclerosi and neuromyelitis optica spectrtum disorders-related optic neuritis. LHON diagnosis relies on clinical signs and paraclinical evaluations. Differential diagnosis in the acute phase primarily involves distinguishing inflammatory optic neuropathies, considering clinical clues such as ocular pain, fundus appearance and visual recovery. Imaging analysis obtained with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) assists clinicians in early recognition of LHON and help avoiding misdiagnosis. Genetic testing for the three most common LHON mutations is recommended initially, followed by comprehensive mtDNA sequencing if suspicion persists despite negative results. Navigation is essential for moving between locations in our daily lives. We investigated the relationship between visual impairment in glaucoma and path-integration-based navigation. Fourteen glaucoma and 15 controls underwent ophthalmological examination (including visual acuity (logMAR), visual field sensitivity (MD: mean deviation from matched reference cohort), and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL)). Both groups navigated physically in virtual reality (VR) environments during daylight and dawn conditions. Briefly, the participants traversed a path marked by three targets, subsequently pointing back to the path's origin. Outcome measures included (i) travel-time, (ii) pointing-time, and (iii) Euclidian-distance error between indicated and starting position. Robust linear regression was conducted between visual function outcomes of the better eye and VR outcome measures. Glaucoma patients showed increase in travel-time (by 8.2 ± 1.7 s; p = 0.002) and in pointing-time (by 5.3 ± 1.6 s; p = 0.016). Predictors were MD for all outcome measures (p < 0.01) and pRNFL for travel-time (p < 0.01). The results suggest that the effect of glaucoma on the elapsed time depends on disease progression, i.e. people with stronger visual impairment need more time. (1) Background: Previous research has investigated the relationship between cognitive impairment, optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual fields (VF), and VF reliability in smaller patient samples using various cognitive assessment tools. This study analyzed the relationship between cognitive function scores using the Mini-Cog test and inner macular thickness (IMT) and VF sensitivity in glaucoma patients. (2) Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 984 patients with 1897 eyes. Assessments included age, sex, intraocular pressure (IOP), and Mini-Cog test scores. Abnormal Mini-Cog scores were observed in 89 patients (9%). Using a mixed-effects model adjusted for background factors, the association between Mini-Cog scores and IMT, parafoveal (PF)-IMT, mean deviation (MD), pattern standard deviation, fixation losses (FL), false negatives (FN), and false positives (FP) was analyzed. (3) Results: Abnormal Mini-Cog scores (≤2) were associated with thinning of the IMT and PF-IMT, worse MDs, and higher FN and FP rates but not with PSD or FL. (4) Conclusions: Glaucoma patients with low cognitive function scores exhibited more advanced glaucoma-related changes in VF testing and morphological tests. Purpose: This study is to evaluate the correlation between retrobulbar perfusion deficits and glaucomatous visual field defects. Methods: Eighty-four patients with glaucoma and 17 normal subjects serving as controls were selected. Color Doppler imaging (CDI) was used to measure the changes in blood flow parameters in the retrobulbar ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), and short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs). Visual field testing was performed using a Humphrey perimeter, categorizing the visual field deficits into four stages according to the Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS) scoring method. Subsequently, the correlation of retrobulbar hemodynamic parameter alterations among glaucomatous patients with varying visual field defects was examined. Results: The higher the visual field stage, the lower the peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the OA, CRA, and SPCAs in glaucomatous patients. The CRA had the highest sensitivity to changes in its PSV. The PSV of the temporal SPCA (TSPCA-PSV) was lower in advanced glaucoma than in early-stage glaucoma. The PSVs of the OA, CRA, and TSPCA, as well as the resistance index of the CRA (CRA-RI), were positively correlated with the visual field index and the mean deviation. Except for that of OA, the PSV of the retrobulbar vessels was negatively correlated with the pattern standard deviation (PSD). The OA-PSV and end-diastolic velocity (EDV) of the CRA and TSPCA were lower in patients with superior visual field defects than in those with inferior visual field defects. Conclusions: Greater severity of visual field defects corresponded to poorer retrobulbar blood flow in glaucomatous patients. Patients suffered significant perfusion impairments in the CRA at the early stage, accompanied by SPCA perfusion disorder at the advanced stage. The presence of a bow-shaped defect in the superior or inferior region of the visual field in moderate-stage glaucoma was closely correlated with retrobulbar vascular EDV. This study explored the link between different types of glaucoma and cognitive function in a cohort of 620 Japanese patients. Participants were categorized into primary open-angle glaucoma (PG), exfoliation glaucoma (EG), and non-glaucomatous control groups. The findings revealed a significant decline in cognitive function as indicated by the Mini-Cog test in the EG group (mean ± SD: 4.0 ± 1, 95% CI: 3.9 to 4.2) compared to the PG group (4.4 ± 0.1, 4.3 to 4.5, p < 0.0001). Levels of fingertip measured advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) were significantly higher in the EG group (mean ± SD: 0.45 ± 0.006, 95% CI: 0.44 to 0.46) compared to the PG group (0.43 ± 0.004, 0.42 to 0.44, p = 0.0014). Although the multivariate analysis initially showed no direct association between glaucoma types and Mini-Cog scores, the EG group exhibited higher age and intraocular pressure (IOP) compared to the PG group. Further analysis revealed that high levels of AGEs were associated with cognitive decline and decreased mean visual fields in the EG group. Age was identified as a cofounding factor in these associations. An inverse correlation was observed between the accumulation of AGEs and skin carotenoid levels. Early detection of cognitive decline in glaucoma patients could enable timely intervention to preserve visual fields. Purpose: To explore the association between progressive peripapillary capillary vessel density (pcVD) reduction and the progression of visual field (VF) impairment in individuals with normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Design: Prospective cohort study. Methods: The study enrolled 110 participants with one eye each, totalling 110 NTG eyes. VF defects were evaluated using standard automated perimetry mean deviation (MD), while pcVD measurements were obtained using optical coherence tomography angiography throughout the follow‐up period. Estimates of VF progression were determined by event‐based and trend‐based analyses. Fast VF progression was defined as an MD slope steeper than −0.5 dB/year, while the slow progression or stable VF was defined as an MD slope better or equal to −0.25 dB/year. Linear mixed‐effects models were employed to analyse the rates of change in pcVD reduction and VF MD decline over time. Additionally, univariable and multivariable linear models were used to examine the relationship between pcVD changes and VF loss rates in NTG. Results: Slow VF progression or stable VF was observed in 45% of subjects, while 25% had moderate progression and 30% showed fast progression. Patients with VF progression exhibited faster rate of pcVD reduction in peripapillary global region (−0.73 ± 0.40%/year vs. −0.56 ± 0.35%/year, p = 0.022). Moreover, this rate positively correlated with VF MD decline in NTG (estimate 0.278, 95% CI 0.122–0.433, p = 0.001). Conclusion: In individuals with NTG, faster VF progression was linked to a quicker reduction in pcVD, suggesting a positive correlation between pcVD decline and VF deterioration. Background: The coronavirus disease pandemic has affected the way of life and health system. The use of face masks can reduce the spread of the virus, however, improper fitted masks reported results in inferior visual field artifacts. The effect of wearing a properly fitted face mask remains unclear. Objective: To compare the sensitivity in 21 points mostly in the inferior field of visual field in healthy eyes under two conditions of ear-loop surgical face mask use. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six participants, with 36 healthy eyes, underwent computerized visual field testing using the program SITA Standard 24-2. The participants were instructed to wear masks at the lowest position that covered the nose with sealed tape along the entire length of the superior border for the first two tests and unsealed tape for the third test. The sensitivity of the visual field was analyzed and compared between the two groups. Furthermore, factors that may affect the sensitivity of the visual field were investigated. Results: The present study showed statistically significant differences in the two test points of the sensitivity of the visual field, namely, the inferonasal and superonasal areas of the visual field between the two groups. Fogging and displacement of the mask were observed when the mask was worn without adhesive tape. Conclusion: Wearing a surgical face mask with the mask placed in a low position and covering the nose with adhesive tape, can reduce fogging and prevent the displacement of the mask. In consideration of the spatial structures of sensory experiences, an 'Externality Thesis' is commonly proposed, according to which awareness of sensory boundaries is also an awareness of the presence of a space beyond these boundaries. The paper evaluates the Externality Thesis in the context of vision and touch. More specifically, relying on mereotopological theories, it is shown that the notion of spatial boundaries is ambiguous as it encompasses various distinct ways in which entities may be connected by a boundary. It is argued that only some of these ways are able to support the Externality Thesis. In particular, it is claimed that while bodily boundaries of which one is aware in tactile sensations are such that the awareness of them provides support for the Externality Thesis, the analogous claim is not true about the boundaries of the visual field. Purpose: No method to quantitatively evaluate stereopsis within the 15º visual field has been clinically established. We developed a program to measure paracentral stereopsis and evaluated its feasibility in visually normal participants. Study design: Experimental investigation Methods: Ten visually normal volunteers with stereopsis of 60 arcseconds or better were included. The Stereo Eccentricity Analysis (SEA) program for stereopsis measurement across the visual field was integrated into the binocular visual field analyzer imovifa®. Subjects with established binocular stereopsis detected a stereoscopic circular target presented with crossed disparity on random dots at the fovea, 3°, 5°, 10°, and 15° on the 45°, 135°, 225°, and 315° meridians. The subjects performed two tasks for measurement in the periphery: a detection task by pressing the response button when the circular target was perceived and a localization task by tilting a joystick to indicate in which quadrant the circular target was perceived. The duration of the target presentation was 500 ms. Results: The stereo thresholds at 0º and 3° did not significantly differ. The thresholds at 10º and 15º were significantly higher than at 0° (P < 0.01). While no inter-individual threshold difference was observed at the fovea, the difference was large at 15°. The stereo thresholds for the detection and localization tasks also did not differ significantly. Conclusion: With the SEA program, paracentral stereopsis can be measured and the stereo threshold increases with eccentricity. Purpose: To investigate the diagnostic ability of retinal superficial vasculature evaluation by optic coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) combined with visual field (VF) testing for early primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Patients and methods: In this cross-sectional study, 84 participants were included, including 11 in the ocular hypertension (OHT) group, 11 in the preperimetric POAG (pre-POAG) group, 29 in the early POAG group and 33 in the control group. All participants underwent 6 × 6 mm2 scans of macula and optic nerved head by optic coherence tomography (OCT) and OCTA, along with white-on-white and blue-on-yellow VF testing by static automated perimetry. The ability of diagnosing early glaucoma by either various examinations separately or combination of examinations in both terms of function and structure was studied using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC). Results: The superficial retinal vessel densities (VD) in peri-nasal, para-temporal, peri-temporal and peri-inferior regions around the macula, as well as vessel area densities (VAD) in all peripapillary regions, were significantly different among the four groups, with lower VD or VAD in the early POAG patients compared to the normal individuals. The diagnostic ability of peripapillary superficial retinal VAD alone or VF testing alone was limited for early POAG only. However, the combination of these two was more effective in distinguishing normal individuals from OHT subjects or pre-POAG patients without VF defects, with better performance than the combination of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and VF indicators. Conclusions: Peripapillary retinal vessel densities were generally lower in early POAG patients compared to normal individuals. The combination of peripapillary superficial retinal VAD by OCTA with white-on-white VF testing improved the ability to distinguish POAG patients at early stage without function impairment, which may help in providing reference and guidance for the following-up and treatment of suspected POAG patients. Introduction: Acute primary angle closure (APAC) is an emergency ophthalmic presentation and a major cause of irreversible blindness in China. However, only a few studies have focused on the characteristics of optic disc hemorrhage (ODH) during an APAC attack, including its shape, depth, location, scope, and duration after intraocular pressure (IOP) control, along with changes in the optic nerve. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of ODH and optic nerve changes in patients during their first APAC episode. Methods: This retrospective study involved 32 eyes from 32 patients with APAC who received sequential treatment and analyzed the following parameters: the highest IOP and its duration, ODH, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT), and mean deviation (MD). We compared parameters obtained from the affected eye (ODH group) and contralateral unaffected eye (control group), as well as intragroup comparisons. Results: The mean IOP in the ODH group was 64.28 ± 10.36 mmHg, with a duration of 4.44 ± 2.35 days. Flame and splinter shapes accounted for 84.38% of the ODH. The mean ODH duration was 4.81 ± 3.25 weeks. ODH during APAC was isolated to one sector in 59.38% of cases, mostly occurring in the temporal superior and temporal inferior (each accounting for 21.88% of the cases). There was a positive correlation between the extent of hemorrhage and the highest IOP duration (p < 0.001). RNFLT was significantly thickened within 72 h post-IOP control but was thinned by 2 weeks. By 6 months, the thinning stabilized, and there was no difference noted between the ODH and control groups at 12 months. MD partly improved at 6 months post-IOP control, and ODH scope significantly affected the MD (p < 0.001). The duration of high IOP was positively correlated to the ODH scope and MD damage. Background: The TsiogkaSpaeth (TS) grid is a new, low-cost, and easy to access portable test for visual field (VF) screening which could be used by clinicians in everyday clinical practice. Our study aimed to determine the validity of an innovative screening grid test for identifying neurological disease-associated VF defects. Methods: We enrolled two groups of participants: We assessed the one eye of ten consecutive adult patients with different types of neurological disease associated VF defects and ten eyes of controls in each group. The TS grid test was performed in each group. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the TS grid scotoma area were assessed using the 24–2 VF Humphrey field analyzer (HFA) as the reference standard. Results: Sensitivity and specificity of the TS grid test were 100% and 90.91%, respectively. The area under curve was 0.9545 with 95% CI 0.87–1.00. There was a significant correlation between the number of missed locations on the TS grid test and the visual field index of the HFA 24–2 (r = 0.9436, P <.0001). Conclusion: The sensitivity and specificity of the TS grid test were high in detecting VF defects in neurological disease. The TS grid test appears to be a reliable, low-cost, and easily accessed alternative to traditional VF tests in diagnosing typical neurological patterns of visual field defects. It would be useful in screening subjects for neurologically derived ocular morbidity in everyday clinical practice and in remote areas deprived of specialized health care services. Background: The aim of this study was to determine if the rise in new surgical procedures for glaucoma is changing the baseline features of patients. Methods: In this retrospective study, we reviewed the baseline features of patients undergoing their first glaucoma surgery in 2011 and 2021, collecting data regarding intraocular pressure (IOP), visual field (VF) parameters, stage of disease, and the type of surgery. Results: In the study, 455 patients were included in the analysis. From these, 230 eyes had glaucoma surgery performed in 2011 (Group A) and 225 eyes in 2021 (Group B). When considering the baseline features, Group A was older than Group B (72.7 ± 10.7 and 70 ± 12.4 years; p = 0.02, respectively), and showed a significantly more advanced VF mean defect (−16.4 ± 8.8 and −13.8 ± 8.7 dB; p < 0.01, respectively) and a higher IOP (25.9 ± 6.6 and 24.9 ± 7.8 mmHg; p = 0.02, respectively). Overall, severe VF damage at the time of surgery was more frequent in Group A (74.3%) than in Group B (60.8%) (p < 0.01). The overall number of traditional glaucoma surgeries was 211 in 2011, reducing to 94 ten years later, with similar severe pre-operative VF defects. In 2021, minimally invasive bleb surgery (MIBS) represented 58% of all surgeries. Conclusions: In the last ten years, patients receiving glaucoma surgery for the first time were younger, had less severe disease, and a more contained IOP. The baseline feature modifications were probably related to the diffusion of new procedures, especially MIBS, which allowed for treating patients at an earlier stage, reserving traditional procedures for advanced cases. Glaucoma refers to a spectrum of progressive optic neuropathies and remains the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Its insidious onset poses serious challenges to conventional diagnostic methods and clinicians striving to detect early-stage disease for timely and effective intervention. Artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated its ability to process and analyze large datasets which can help identify subtle changes in early glaucomatous clinical presentation. This study reviews the current state of AI utilization in glaucoma and elucidates the strengths and limitations of existing approaches. We dissect the role of AI in various domains: enhancing early detection and diagnosis, monitoring disease progression, and refining treatment strategies to optimize patient outcomes. Furthermore, we address the ethical, legal, and social implications, alongside the inherent limitations of AI in the clinical setting. Despite these challenges, AI holds transformative potential for glaucoma management. Future directions emphasize the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, advanced and explainable algorithm development, and equitable healthcare access to fully realize the promise of AI in combating this vision-threatening condition. While widely acknowledged as being important for team-sport performance, the contribution of peripheral vision is poorly understood. This study aimed to better understand the role of far peripheral vision in team sport by exploring how domain experts and novices used far peripheral vision to support decision making and action control. Expert (n = 25) and novice (n = 23) Australian football players completed a perception-only task to assess the extent of their peripheral field. Next, they completed two sport-specific variations (response and recognition) of a "no-look" pass task that required passing a ball to a teammate who appeared in their far peripheral field. In the perception-only task, novices outperformed experts. However, in the sport-specific action response and recognition tasks, experts demonstrated superior performance as they responded to the stimulus farther from central vision and more accurately. The ocean's midwater is a uniquely challenging yet predictable and simple visual environment. The need to see without being seen in this dim, open habitat has led to extraordinary visual adaptations. To understand these adaptations, we compared the morphological and functional differences between the eyes of three hyperiid amphipods—Hyperia galba, Streetsia challengeri and Phronima sedentaria. Combining micro-CT data with computational modelling, we mapped visual field topography and predicted detection distances for visual targets viewed in different directions through mesopelagic depths. Hyperia's eyes provide a wide visual field optimized for spatial vision over short distances, while Phronima's and Streetsia's eyes have the potential to achieve greater sensitivity and longer detection distances using spatial summation. These improvements come at the cost of smaller visual fields, but this loss is compensated for by a second pair of eyes in Phronima and by behaviour in Streetsia. The need to improve sensitivity while minimizing visible eye size to maintain crypsis has likely driven the evolution of hyperiid eye diversity. Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study included 44 patients with NTG. Only newly diagnosed NTG patients who had not been treated with a glaucoma medication were included. Patients were examined every year for 7 years. Intraocular pressure (IOP), heart rate (HR), systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), ocular perfusion pressure (OPP), and diastolic ocular perfusion pressure (DOPP) were measured at the same time. Ophthalmic examinations, including perimetry, were performed also. Initial VF were compared with follow-up data after 7 years. Results: After 7 years of follow-up, 9 of the 44 patients showed VF progression. The standard deviation (SD) of SBP and OPP were significantly associated with VF progression (P = 0.007, < 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis showed that VF progression was significantly associated with SD of OPP (odds ratio, OR = 2.012, 95% CI = 1.016–3.985; P = 0.045). Since coronavirus disease infection-19 (COVID-19) entry to the cells is angiotensin enzyme receptor (ACEII) dependent, extrapulmonary manifestations have been suspected. Ocular manifestations reported in several studies to involve the anterior as well as posterior eye segments. However, the predominance of the anterior eye segment reduced the attention of the scientific community on the posterior eye segment. Our results showed that the incidence of changes in the posterior eye segment is 1/5 of the anterior eye segment. Posterior eye segment manifestations include acute macular neuroretinopathy and paracentral middle maculopathy, central retinal vein/artery occlusion, reactivation of previous uveitis, varicella zoster virus-related acute retinal necrosis in an immunocompromised patient, chorioretinitis, macular hemorrhage, paracentral acute middle maculopathy, retinal detachment, and vitritis with outer retinal abnormalities. The pathogenesis of posterior eye segment manifestations under COVID-19 includes viremia, autoimmune vasculitis, hyperimmune response, coagulopathy, and cytokine storm. A full ophthalmological examination is crucial for patients recovering from COVID-19. Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the 3-year efficacy and safety of single-agent omidenepag isopropyl in patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Study design: Retrospective. Methods: One hundred patients (100 eyes) who had newly been administered omidenepag isopropyl were enrolled in this study. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was compared at baseline and 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months after administration. The mean deviation values at baseline and 12, 24, and 36 months measured using the Humphrey visual field test (30-2 Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm standard) were compared. Adverse reactions and dropouts were assessed. Results: IOP significantly decreased from 15.5±2.7 mmHg at baseline to 13.8 ±2.3 mmHg after 6 months, 13.9± 2.3 mmHg after 12 months, 13.9±2.3 mmHg after 18 months, 13.8±2.1 mmHg after 24 months, 13.9±2.0 mmHg after 30 months, and 13.6±1.7 mmHg after 36 months (P < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the mean deviation values at baseline (-3.66±3.49 dB), 12 months (-3.41±3.80 dB), 24 months (-3.13±3.81 dB), and 36 months (-3.06±3.30 dB). Adverse reactions occurred in 11 patients (11.0%), including conjunctival hyperemia in 6 patients. Fifty-two patients (52.0%) were excluded from the analysis because they discontinued treatment either due to IOP measurement by NCT or the use of additional drugs. Conclusion: After the administration of omidenepag isopropyl, IOP in patients with NTG decreased within 3 years, visual fields were maintained, and safety was satisfactory. Background: NAION, a multifactorial disorder with an unclear mechanism has limited insight on its treatment option. Despite conflicting results in its relation to hypercoagulation, many metabolic risk factors associated with NAION are intertwined with hypercoagulation. We aim to investigate the impact of anticoagulant therapy in the vascular and visual function of NAION patients. Methods: A prospective interventional study was conducted in the Neuro-Ophthalmology Division, Department of Ophthalmology at FKUI-RSCM Kirana from October 2020 to April 2022, involving two groups of NAION subjects: hypercoagulation and non-hypercoagulation. All subjects received 80 mg of aspirin daily, with the hypercoagulation group additionally receiving 2 mg of warfarin. We assessed capillary perfusion (CP) and flux index (FI) using OCTA, along with changes in visual acuity (Snellen chart test) and visual field (Humphrey Visual Field - HVF) at presentation and one month after treatment. Results: The hypercoagulation group had 14 subjects, while the nonhypercoagulation group had 7. This research found a significant decrease for CP (p=0.003) and FI (p=0.001) in both groups. CP and FI in all quadrants decreased more in the non-hypercoagulable group without anticoagulant therapy, although the difference between the two groups was not significant (p=0.198 for CP and p=0.243 for FI). Hypercoagulation group showed significant visual field improvements (p=0.033 for MD and p=0.014 for VFI). Most subjects within hypercoagulation showed improvement although not all of it was significant, while the majority of the nonhypercoagulation group showed no changes. To evaluate the utility of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (pRNFLT) for the prediction of visual outcomes, including visual acuity (VA) and visual field (VF), in subjects with acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective study of data relating to 60 eyes of 60 subjects with acute NAION. Of these, reliable VF values were obtained at both the initial and at 6-month follow-up visits for 30 eyes, which were included in the VF analysis. The pRNFLT was measured globally and separately in all four quadrants (superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal) using optical coherence tomography at the initial visit. Multivariate analysis and the area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the utility of pRNFLT for the prediction of visual outcomes, including favorable VA (VA better than or equal to 20/25) and favorable VF (visual field index (VFI) ≥ 90%), at the 6-month follow-up visit. Results: The median VA and mean VFI at the initial visit were 0.40 (interquartile range (IQR): 0.40, 0.54; logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR)) and 73.07% ± 6.73%, respectively. The median VA and mean VFI at the 6-month follow-up visit were 0.30 (IQR: 0.00, 0.70) logMAR and 69.27% ± 28.94%, respectively. Thinner temporal-quadrant pRNFLT was associated with favorable VA (odds ratio 0.98; p = 0.042) with a cut-off value of 128 μm (AUC 0.839, 95% CI: 0.732– 0.947, sensitivity 77.27%, specificity 84.21%). Thinner nasal-quadrant pRNFLT was associated with favorable VF (odds ratio 0.97; p = 0.047) with a cut-off value of 105 μm (AUC 0.780, 95% CI: 0.612– 0.948, sensitivity 90.00%, specificity 70.00%). Conclusions: The pRNFLT is clinically useful for the prediction of visual outcomes in patients with acute NAION. Perimetry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) are both used to monitor glaucoma progression. However, combining these modalities can be a challenge due to differences in data types. To overcome this, we have developed an autoencoder data fusion (AEDF) model to learn compact encoding (AE-fused data) from both perimetry and OCT. The AEDF model, optimized specifically for visual field (VF) progression detection, incorporates an encoding loss to ensure the interpretation of the AE-fused data is similar to VF data while capturing key features from OCT measurements. For model training and evaluation, our study included 2504 longitudinal VF and OCT tests from 140 glaucoma patients. VF progression was determined from linear regression slopes of longitudinal mean deviations. Progression detection with AE-fused data was compared to VF-only data (standard clinical method) as well as data from a Bayesian linear regression (BLR) model. In the initial 2-year follow-up period, AE-fused data achieved a detection F1 score of 0.60 (95% CI: 0.57 to 0.62), significantly outperforming (p < 0.001) the clinical method (0.45, 95% CI: 0.43 to 0.47) and the BLR model (0.48, 95% CI: 0.45 to 0.51). The capacity of the AEDF model to generate clinically interpretable fused data that improves VF progression detection makes it a promising data integration tool in glaucoma management. Purpose of Review: In this review, we will describe current methods for visual field testing in neuro-ophthalmic clinical practice and research, develop terminology that accurately describes patterns of field deficits, and discuss recent advances such as augmented or virtual reality-based perimetry and the use of artificial intelligence in visual field interpretation. Recent Findings: New testing strategies that reduce testing times, improve patient comfort, and increase sensitivity for detecting small central or paracentral scotomas have been developed for static automated perimetry. Various forms of machine learning-based tools such as archetypal analysis are being tested to quantitatively depict and monitor visual field abnormalities in optic neuropathies. Studies show that the combined use of optical coherence tomography and standard automated perimetry to determine the structure-function relationship improves clinical care in neuro-ophthalmic disorders. Summary: Visual field assessment must be performed in all patients with neuro-ophthalmic disorders affecting the afferent visual pathway. Quantitative visual field analysis using standard automated perimetry is critical in initial diagnosis, monitoring disease progression, and guidance of therapeutic plans. Visual field defects can adversely impact activities of daily living such as reading, navigation, and driving and thus impact quality of life. Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly expanding field within computer science that encompasses the emulation of human intelligence by machines. Machine learning and deep learning – two primary data-driven pattern analysis approaches under the umbrella of artificial intelligence – has created considerable interest in the last few decades. The evolution of technology has resulted in a substantial amount of artificial intelligence research on ophthalmic and neurodegenerative disease diagnosis using retinal images. Various artificial intelligence-based techniques have been used for diagnostic purposes, including traditional machine learning, deep learning, and their combinations. Presented here is a review of the literature covering the last 10 years on this topic, discussing the use of artificial intelligence in analysing data from different modalities and their combinations for the diagnosis of glaucoma and neurodegenerative diseases. The performance of published artificial intelligence methods varies due to several factors, yet the results suggest that such methods can potentially facilitate clinical diagnosis. Generally, the accuracy of artificial intelligence-assisted diagnosis ranges from 67–98%, and the area under the sensitivity-specificity curve (AUC) ranges from 0.71–0.98, which outperforms typical human performance of 71.5% accuracy and 0.86 area under the curve. This indicates that artificial intelligence-based tools can provide clinicians with useful information that would assist in providing improved diagnosis. The review suggests that there is room for improvement of existing artificial intelligence-based models using retinal imaging modalities before they are incorporated into clinical practice. Word reading requires a range of spatial attention processes, such as orienting to a specific word and selecting it while ignoring other words. This study investigated whether deficits of these spatial attention processes can show dissociations after hemispheric lesions. Thirty-nine patients with left or right focal epilepsy and 66 healthy participants had to read aloud four-letter words presented in the left and right visual hemifields. There were three successive blocks of presentation: in the unilateral block, a single word was presented in one of the visual hemifields; in the bilateral block, two words were presented simultaneously, one in each visual hemifield; in the cued block, two words were also presented, but only the cued word had to be reported. Twenty-one patients, twelve with a left and nine with a right hemisphere lesion, showed a word reading deficit. Four had specific difficulties in the cued block, suggesting an attentional selection reading deficit. Twelve patients had an asymmetric reading deficit, suggesting an attention orientation or a visual field deficit. Five patients had more complex deficits. The visual field presentation procedure may help to reveal different types of reading disorders in patients with epilepsy and to dissociate orienting and selecting deficits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A timely detection of visual hemifield deficits (VHFDs; hemianopias or quadrantanopias) is critical for both the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. The present study determined the sensitivity and specificity of four qualitative visual field tests, including face description, confrontation tests (finger wiggle), and kinetic boundary perimetry, to screen large and dense VHFDs in right-brain-damaged (RBD) stroke patients. Previously, the accuracy of qualitative visual field tests was examined in unselected samples of patients with heterogeneous aetiology, in which stroke patients represented a very small fraction. Building upon existing tests, we introduced some procedural ameliorations (incl. a novel procedure for kinetic boundary perimetry) and provided a scoresheet to facilitate the grading. The qualitative visual field tests' outcome of 67 consecutive RBD stroke patients was compared with the standard automated perimetry (SAP; i.e., reference standard) outcome to calculate sensitivity and specificity, as well as positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV), both for each individual test and their combinations. The face description test scored the lowest sensitivity and NPV, while the kinetic boundary perimetry scored the highest. No test returned false positives. Combining the monocular static finger wiggle test (by quadrants) and the kinetic boundary perimetry returned the highest sensitivity and specificity, in line with previous studies, but with higher accuracy (100% sensitivity and specificity). These findings indicate that the combination of these two tests is a valid approach with RBD stroke patients, prompting referral for a formal visual field examination, and representing a quick, easy-to-perform, and inexpensive tool for improving their care and prognosis. Purpose: To examine the diagnostic accuracy of performing two (frontloaded) versus one (clinical standard) visual field (VF) test per visit for detecting the progression of early glaucoma in data derived from clinical populations. Methods: A computer simulation model was used to follow the VFs of 10,000 glaucoma patients (derived from two cohorts: Heijl et al., Swedish cohort; and Chauhan et al., Canadian Glaucoma Study [CGS]) over a 10‐year period to identify patients whose mean deviation (MD) progression was detected. Core data (baseline MD and progression rates) were extracted from two studies in clinical cohorts of glaucoma, which were modulated using SITA‐Faster variability characteristics from previous work. Additional variables included follow‐up intervals (six‐monthly or yearly) and rates of perimetric data loss for any reason (0%, 15% and 30%). The main outcome measures were the proportions of progressors detected. Results: When the Swedish cohort was reviewed six‐monthly, the frontloaded strategy detected more progressors compared to the non‐frontloaded method up to years 8, 9 and 10 of follow‐up for 0%, 15% and 30% data loss conditions. The time required to detect 50% of cases was 1.0–1.5 years less for frontloading compared to non‐frontloading. At 4 years, frontloading increased detection by 26.7%, 28.7% and 32.4% for 0%, 15% and 30% data loss conditions, respectively. Where both techniques detected progression, frontloading detected progressors earlier compared to the non‐frontloaded strategy (78.5%–81.5% and by 1.0–1.3 years when reviewed six‐monthly; 81%–82.9% and by 1.2–2.1 years when reviewed yearly). Accordingly, these patients had less severe MD scores (six‐monthly review: 0.63–1.67 dB 'saved'; yearly review: 1.10–2.87 dB). The differences increased with higher rates of data loss. Similar tendencies were noted when applied to the CGS cohort. Background: The clinical features of posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), a rare condition often caused by Alzheimer's disease, have been recently defined, while little is known about its neurophysiological correlates. Objective: To describe neurophysiological alterations of the visual pathway as assessed using visual field test (VF), visual evoked potentials (VEP), and electroretinogram (ERG) in PCA patients. Methods: Studies reporting VF, VEPs, and ERG in PCA patients were selected according PRISMA method. Of the 323 articles that emerged from the literature, 17 included the outcomes of interest. To these data, we added those derived from a patient cohort enrolled at our clinic. Results: The literature review included 140 patients, half of them (50%) presented with homonymous hemianopia or quadrantanopia. VEPs were available in 4 patients (2 normal findings, 1 decreased amplitude, and 1 increased latency) and ERG in 3 patients (substantially normal findings). Our case series included 6 patients, presenting with homonymous lateral hemianopia in 50% and contralateral cortical atrophy. VEPs showed normal amplitude in 66–83% according to the stimulation check, and increased latency in 67% in absence of myelin damage on MRI. Latency was increased in both eyes in 50% and only on one side in the other 50%. Such alterations were observed in patients with more severe and symmetric atrophy. ERG showed normal findings. Conclusions: Neurophysiological investigations of the visual pathway in PCA are almost absent in literature. Alterations involve both amplitude and latency and can be also monocular. Purpose: To determine the prevalence of and risk factors for open‐angle glaucoma in a population of 70‐year‐olds in Gothenburg, Sweden and to compare the visual function between the glaucoma population and the non‐glaucoma population. Methods: Of the entire cohort (n = 1203), 1182 participants responded a questionnaire on self‐reported glaucoma and were tested for blood pressure (BP) and diabetes. In all, 560 participants underwent ophthalmic examination including best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), contrast sensitivity (CS), perimetry and photos of the retina and lens. Results: Glaucoma prevalence was 4.8% (95% confidence interval, 3.0%–6.6%), of which 56% was previously undiagnosed. The proportion of participants with diastolic BP >90 mmHg was higher in the non‐glaucomatous group (8.3%) than the glaucoma group (0%), p < 0.001. A family history of glaucoma was present in a larger proportion of the glaucoma group (39%) than of the non‐glaucomatous group (1.1%), p = 0.001. Mean IOP in individuals without glaucoma was 16 mmHg, versus 21 mmHg in participants with glaucoma detected at the examination. IOP was ≤21 mmHg in 67% among participants with previously unknown glaucoma. BCVA was lower in eyes with previously unknown glaucoma than in eyes without glaucoma (p = 0.017) but BCVA in the best eye did not differ. CCT and CS were similar in all cases. Conclusions: The prevalence of glaucoma was comparable to that reported previously. A family history of glaucoma and higher IOP were risk factors associated with glaucoma. A longitudinal ophthalmic dataset was used to investigate multi-modal machine learning (ML) models incorporating patient demographics and history, clinical measurements, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field (VF) testing in predicting glaucoma surgical interventions. The cohort included 369 patients who underwent glaucoma surgery and 592 patients who did not undergo surgery. The data types used for prediction included patient demographics, history of systemic conditions, medication history, ophthalmic measurements, 24-2 VF results, and thickness measurements from OCT imaging. The ML models were trained to predict surgical interventions and evaluated on independent data collected at a separate study site. The models were evaluated based on their ability to predict surgeries at varying lengths of time prior to surgical intervention. The highest performing predictions achieved an AUC of 0.93, 0.92, and 0.93 in predicting surgical intervention at 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years, respectively. The models were also able to achieve high sensitivity (0.89, 0.77, 0.86 at 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively) and specificity (0.85, 0.90, and 0.91 at 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively) at an 0.80 level of precision. The multi-modal models trained on a combination of data types predicted surgical interventions with high accuracy up to three years prior to surgery and could provide an important tool to predict the need for glaucoma intervention. Visual Field (VF) measurements, crucial for diagnosing and treating glaucoma, often contain noise originating from both the instrument and subjects during the response process. This study proposes a neural network-based denoising method for VF data, obviating the need for ground truth labels or paired measurements. Using a mask-imposed VF as an input for the neural network, while the original VF serves as a training label, we evaluated performance metrics such as the accuracy, precision, and sensitivity of denoised VFs. Orthogonal experiments were also employed to assess the impact of mask number, mask structure, and replacement strategy on model accuracy. This study reveals that mask number, replacement strategy, and their interaction significantly affect the accuracy of the denoising model. Under recommended parameters, VF-Mask-Net effectively enhances the accuracy and precision of VF measurements. Furthermore, in deterioration detection tasks, denoised VFs display heightened sensitivity compared to their pre-denoising counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The full-field stimulus threshold (FST) test was developed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of treatments of hereditary retinal diseases. In this study we performed the FST test in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and compared the results with findings from other ophthalmological tests. Materials and Methods: The study included 51 intermediate and advanced RP patients and 21 normal subjects. All patients and controls underwent routine examination and ophthalmological tests including visual field, optical coherence tomography, full-field and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG), and FST tests. During FST testing, the perception thresholds of retina to the white, blue, and red FST were determined in decibels. Results: The mean age of the patients and the controls were 35.2 and 33.5 years, respectively. For all RP patients, no response was obtained on fullfield ERG. All subjects were able to perform reliable FST tests. The mean values of visual acuity and central macular thickness were significantly lower and visual field mean deviation values were significantly higher in the RP group than the controls. When we evaluated the mfERG findings, the mean P1 wave amplitudes in all rings were significantly lower and the mean peak times were significantly longer in RP patients than controls. In comparisons of FST test results, the mean values for white, blue, red and the difference between blue-red thresholds were significantly lower in the RP group than the control group. Conclusion: The FST test is a fast and a reliable exam which can be done in subjects with poor visual acuity and reduced visual field. Background: In this study, we report a case series of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) associated with COVID-19 infection. Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted at Beijing Tongren Hospital. We reviewed patients who were diagnosed with AMN within one month of testing positive for COVID-19 using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: A total of 11 AMN patients (20 eyes) were included in the study. The mean age was 33.8 ± 12.6 years. The average interval between a positive COVID-19 PCR test and the onset of ocular symptoms was 2.8 ± 2.5 days. The mean follow-up period for the patients was 12.5 ± 3.8 weeks. Imaging characteristics of AMN patients following COVID-19 infection included areas of low reflectivity on near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging, hyperreflective lesions at the level of the outer plexiform layer (OPL) and outer nuclear layer (ONL) and disruption of the ellipsoid zone (EZ) on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) B-scans. Visual field examinations revealed parafoveal scotomas that closely corresponded to the clinical lesions. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) demonstrated impaired perfusion in the deep retinal vascular plexus. Fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and spontaneous fundus autofluorescence showed no significant abnormalities. During follow-up, partial improvement in retinal lesions was observed in NIR imaging and SD-OCT in some patients, but a proportion of patients still exhibited persistent retinal damage and no improvement in visual field scotomas. Conclusion: COVID-19-related AMN share similar clinical and imaging features with AMN due to other causes, as evidenced by the persistent presence of visual field scotomas over a longer duration. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of trabeculectomy (TE) and deep sclerectomy (DS) in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) and thereby preserving visual field and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) tissue in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) cases. IOP, number of IOP-lowering medications, visual acuity, mean defect of standard automated perimetry, and mean peripapillary RNFL thickness were retrospectively collected and followed up for 3 years after surgery. TE was performed in 104 eyes and DS in 183 eyes. Age, gender, laterality, IOP, number of medications, visual acuity, perimetry mean defect, and peripapillary RNFL thickness were equally distributed at baseline. Mean IOP decreased from 23.8 ± 1.4 mmHg and 23.1 ± 0.4 mmHg to 13.4 ± 0.6 mmHg (p < 0.001) and 15.4 ± 0.7 mmHg (p = 0.001) in the TE and DS groups, respectively. Mean defect remained stable (TE: −11.5 ± 0.9 dB to −12.0 ± 1.1 (p = 0.090); DS: −10.5 ± 0.9 dB to −11.0 ± 1.0 dB (p = 0.302)), while mean peripapillary RNFL thickness showed further deterioration during follow-up (TE group: 64.4 ± 2.1 μm to 59.7 ± 3.5 μm (p < 0.001); DS group: 64.9 ± 1.9 μm to 58.4 ± 2.1 μm (p < 0.001)). A space occupant's real-time exposure to light reaching his/her eyes has been a concern in lighting research and design practice. This study assumed a schematic eye to estimate the luminous flux received by the entrance pupil from the visible luminous environment. As the first part of this study, this paper focused on the fundamentals of luminous flux calculation that considers real-time human eye reactions. The research work includes: (a) developing a dynamic binocular/monocular visual field model that takes the eye movement into account, based on a conventional visual field model in orthomode, (b) retrieving the apparent area of the entrance pupil of the schematic eye, and (c) quantifying the light passing through the entrance pupil from the luminous environment fallen in the binocular/monocular visual field. The fundamental theory was tested in a theoretical uniform lighting scene to calculate the luminous flux emitted from the human visual field along multiple gaze directions at different light levels. Introduction: Severe central visual field defects are frequently observed in highly myopic eyes. This report details 2 cases of central visual field defects in individuals with high myopia, characterized by an unusual temporal protrusion of the optic disc, a feature not previously documented. Case Presentation: Two patients, a 54-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, were diagnosed with high myopia in their left eyes, displaying an outward protrusion of the optic disc toward the macula. Swept-source optical coherence tomography revealed a focal lamina cribrosa defect at the temporal edge of the protruding optic disc, corresponding to the papillomacular bundle area of retinal nerve fibers, which exhibited thinning around the focal lamina cribrosa defect. Visual field examination indicated a central visual field defect in the affected eyes, which pattern corresponded to the papillomacular bundle responsible area. Conclusion: The emergence of a temporal protrusion in the optic disc may lead to a focal lamina cribrosa defect, resulting in a central visual field defect in highly myopic eyes. This distinctive optic disc feature may constitute a critical risk factor for a central visual field defect. Purpose: Some patients refrained from seeking an ophthalmologist due to the anxiety and morbidity associated with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. We investigated progressive visual field defects in patients with glaucoma who refrained from ophthalmological examinations. Methods: This was a retrospective study. We analyzed data from 886 patients with glaucoma who visited Inouye Eye Hospital in June 2022 and were followed-up prior to January 2020. We examined the number of times patients canceled visits between January 2020 and May 2022 due to coronavirus concerns. We assessed the mean deviation (MD) values of the Humphrey Visual Field Assessment (HFA) program 30-2 SITA Standard values after visit interruptions for worsening beyond the MD values predicted by the MD slope. Factors influencing this difference were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. Results: The study included 374 men and 512 women. The mean age was 68.7 ± 12.0 years. Visit interruptions occurred in 146 patients (16.5%), with 95 (65.1%) rescheduling once, 27 (18.5%) twice, and 24 (16.4%) three or more times. Among 90 patients who underwent HFA regularly, 50 (55.6%) experienced worse-than-expected MD values and 12 (13.3%) deteriorated by 2 dB or more. Longer interruptions and high intraocular pressure before interruption worsened the MD values by 2 dB or more. Purpose: To investigate the effect of a new head-mounted electronic visual aid-Acesight on improving visual function and daily activities in patients with tunnel vision. Methods: 57 patients with tunnel vision participated in this study. The visual field (VF), visual acuity (VA), search ability, time of finding people from the side (TFPS), walking ability, and the subjective feelings of patients with and without Acesight were measured. Results: 15 (36%) patients thought Acesight was “helpful”, 16 (28%) thought it was “a little help”, and 26 (46%) believed that it was “not helpful.” The proportion of people aged < 60 years found Acesight helpful was higher. When wearing Acesight, the average horizontal VF diameter (°) (35.54[8.72]) and vertical VF diameter (°) (26.63[5.38]) were larger than those without visual aids (20.61[9.22], 18.19[6.67]) (P all < 0.001). The average TFPS before and while wearing the Acesight was 1.77s(0.32) and 1.19s(0.29), respectively (t = 14.28, P < 0.001). The average search times, number of collisions, walking speeds when wearing the Acesight were not statistically different from those without visual aids (P all > 0.05). Conclusion: More than half of patients with tunnel vision found the Acesight helpful, and a higher proportion of those aged < 60 years old found it helpful. Acesight can expand the horizontal and vertical VF of patients with tunnel vision and can enable patients to detect objects coming from the side earlier. Purpose: To investigate the objective function of the inner retinal layer in each stage of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) using the photopic negative response (PhNR) measured by RETeval full-field electroretinography (ERG), and to identify which PhNR parameter is the most useful. Methods: Ninety eyes of 90 patients with POAG (30 with mild POAG (mean deviation (MD) ≥ -6 dB) and 60 with moderate-to-advanced POAG (MD < -6 dB)) and 76 eyes of 76 control cases were examined. We investigated six PhNR parameters and their relationships with the results of the Humphrey 30–2 visual field test and the thickness of the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) obtained from optical coherence tomography. The following PhNR parameters were assessed: base-to-trough (BT), peak-to-trough (PT), 72msPhNR, the W-ratio, P-ratio, implicit time (IT), and a-wave and b-wave amplitudes on ERG. Results: All PhNR parameters other than IT significantly differed between the all POAG (all stages) and control groups and between the moderate-to-advanced POAG and control groups. BT and 72msPhNR in the mild POAG group, significantly differed from those in the control group. Regarding the relationships between PhNR parameters and the visual field and between these parameters and cpRNFL thickness, correlations were observed between all PhNR parameters, except PT and IT, and both the visual field and cpRNFL thickness in the all and moderate-to-advanced POAG groups. 72msPhNR correlated with cpRNFL thickness in the mild POAG group. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was greater for BT than for the other PhNR parameters in both the mild and moderate-to-advanced POAG groups. The discriminant linear function for examining the presence or absence of POAG and the threshold for diagnosis were quantitatively obtained as follows. Regarding BT: discriminant = 0.505 × BT + 2.017; threshold = positive for POAG, negative for no POAG; correct answer rate = 80.7%. Concerning 72msPhNR: discriminant = 0.533 × 72msPhNR + 1.553; threshold = positive for POAG and negative for no POAG; correct answer rate = 77.1%. Conclusion: RETeval-measured PhNR parameters were useful for an objective evaluation of visual function in moderate-to-advanced POAG. BT appeared to be the most diagnostically useful parameter. The adaptation to an aquatic lifestyle has occurred several times during the evolution of birds. The transition from a terrestrial to an aquatic lifestyle requires enormous changes in morphology, physiology, and behaviour. In addition to many physical parameters, aquatic foraging is also a limiting factor, despite the fact that aquatic habitats are often rich in food and prey. Despite many previous studies (foraging, physiology, anatomy, ecology, etc.) and a large amount of data regarding piscivore foot-propelled diving birds, our knowledge on the possible relationships between cranial morphology, feeding mechanism, visual abilities and binocularity is still very limited. In this study, we attempt to achieve a deeper understanding of the visual abilities and foraging related attributes of 5 recent and 1 extinct species of foot-propelled diving birds. We attempted to measure the horizontal visual fields of these species using 3D visualization techniques. According to our model, the narrowest horizontal binocular field was measured in Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), and the widest was measured in the cases of Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and Goosander (Mergus merganser). Purpose: We improve pupillary responses and diagnostic performance of flicker pupil perimetry through alterations in global and local color contrast and luminance contrast in adult patients suffering from visual field defects due to cerebral visual impairment (CVI).Methods: Two experiments were conducted on patients with CVI (Experiment 1: 19 subjects, age M and SD 57.9 ± 14.0; Experiment 2: 16 subjects, age M and SD 57.3 ± 14.7) suffering from absolute homonymous visual field (VF) defects. We altered global color contrast (stimuli consisted of white, yellow, cyan and yellow-equiluminant-to-cyan colored wedges) in Experiment 1, and we manipulated luminance and local color contrast with bright and dark yellow and multicolor wedges in a 2-by-2 design in Experiment 2. Stimuli consecutively flickered across 44 stimulus locations within the inner 60 degrees of the VF and were offset to a contrasting (opponency colored) dark background. Pupil perimetry results were compared to standard automated perimetry (SAP) to assess diagnostic accuracy.Results: A bright stimulus with global color contrast using yellow (p=  0.009) or white (p=  0.006) evoked strongest pupillary responses as opposed to stimuli containing local color contrast and lower brightness. Diagnostic accuracy, however, was similar across global color contrast conditions in Experiment 1 (p=  0.27) and decreased when local color contrast and less luminance contrast was introduced in Experiment 2 (p=  0.02). The bright yellow condition resulted in highest performance (AUC M =  0.85 ±  0.10, Mdn =  0.85).Conclusion: Pupillary responses and pupil perimetry's diagnostic accuracy both benefit from high luminance contrast and global but not local color contrast. Introduction: The aim of this prospective study was to compare the visual functions of extended depth-of-focus intraocular lenses (EDOF IOLs) and monofocal IOLs in eyes with mild to moderate primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: Cataractous eyes with POAG controlled using medical treatments, no central visual field defects, and mean deviation (MD) values of −10 dB or better on the 30–2 test grid of the Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm standard program were included. Twenty-two eyes of 22 patients received EDOF IOLs (ZXR00V and ZXV150-375; J&J), whereas 24 eyes of 24 patients received monofocal IOLs (ZCB00V and ZCV150-375; J&J). MD values, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and photopic contrast sensitivity were measured at 3 months after surgery. Noninferiority of CDVA and contrast sensitivity in eyes with EDOF IOLs to eyes with monofocal IOLs were examined. Results: The postoperative mean MDs of eyes with EDOF and monofocal IOLs were −2.76 dB and −4.21 dB with no significant difference. The CDVA of eyes with EDOF IOLs was noninferior to that of eyes with monofocal IOLs (P = 0.02). There were no inferiority in contrast sensitivity at any spatial frequency (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The visual function of EDOF IOLs in eyes with mild-to-moderate POAG was not inferior to that of monofocal IOLs. The aim of the study was to explore the functional impairments and related factors in older adults with moderate to advanced stages of glaucoma. Nineteen patients with glaucoma and 19 participants with no ocular disease performed step test and balance control tasks with analysis of overall stability index and fall risk index. Monocular and binocular Humphrey Visual Field tests were used to estimate visual field defect severity. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to measure physical activity level. Patients with glaucoma showed poorer values for most of the mobility and balance control parameters with medium and large effect sizes (0.3–0.5). Mobility scores in patients were partly associated with their monocular visual field defect (rs =.507, p <.05). Low physical activity was identified as a risk factor for falls (rs = −.453, p <.05) and postural instability (rs = −.457, p <.05). Functional declines in dynamic tasks were not related to glaucoma severity. Older adults with glaucoma display impairment with mobility and balance control compared to controls, associated with the degree of monocular visual field loss and lower daily physical activity. Introduction: To report eyedrop instillation techniques and factors associated with instillation failure among glaucoma subjects in the Video-Recorded Assessment of Medication Skill and Questionnaire-based evaluation of Perception in Glaucoma Study. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, subjects were 60 patients with glaucoma (mean ± standard deviation age, 68.4 ± 11.3 years; 30 men) who required ocular hypotensive medication(s). Subjects completed ophthalmologic examinations and the Mini-Cog cognitive function test; their typical eyedrop instillation technique was video-recorded. Subjects rated their technique as successes/failures by questionnaire and two examiners rated the successes/failures based on video assessment. Discrepancy between self-reported and video-assessed success/failure rates of instillation was the main outcome measures. Multivariate logistic regression identified factors in instillation failure. Results: Of 48/56 (86%) self-reported successes, 27/48 (56%) failed based on video assessment; as a result, 32/56 (57%) were inconsistent between subjective and objective assessments. Overall, 30/56 (54%) failed based on video assessment. In the subject-based data model, older age [odds ratio (OR) 0.93/year, P = 0.025] and lower cognitive function score (OR 2.7/score, P = 0.025) were factors in failed instillations. In the eye-based data model, less myopic objective refractive error (OR 0.77/diopter, P = 0.016) and lower visual field foveal threshold (OR 1.1/decibel, P = 0.041) were factors in failures. Conclusion: In addition to older age, decreased cognitive function, hyperopia, and decreased foveal sensitivity are risks for failed eyedrop instillation. Purpose: To evaluate the visual field after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy and laser treatment for retinopathy of prematurity. Method: Retrospective cohort study. Infants with retinopathy of prematurity treated by anti-VEGF therapy or laser treatment were included in the study. Degrees of visual field in eight directions examined by Goldmann perimeter (intensity, 1000 apostilb; size, V4e = 64 mm2) were compared between the anti-VEGF therapy and laser treatment groups. The visual acuity (VA) and spherical equivalent refraction were also compared between the two groups. Results: Nine eyes with anti-VEGF therapy and 12 eyes with laser treatment were enrolled in the analysis. The total, upper, nasal upper, nasal, nasal lower, temporal lower, and temporal upper visual fields were significantly wider in the eyes with anti-VEGF therapy than in those with laser treatment (496 vs 416, P =.002; 53 vs 45, P =.008; 56 vs 43, P =.003; 58 vs 39, P <.001; 55 vs 44, P =.01; 72 vs 65, P =.01; and 62 vs 56, P =.03, respectively). The logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution VA tended to be better in the eyes with anti-VEGF therapy than in those with laser treatment (0.01 vs 0.15, P =.06). Eyes with anti-VEGF therapy had significantly lower myopia than those with laser treatment (spherical equivalent refraction: -0.72 vs -5.7, P =.001).
