A fully open source software program for automated two-dimensional and one-dimensional data reduction and preliminary analysis of isotropic small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data is presented. The program is freely distributed, following the open-source philosophy, and does not rely on any commercial software packages. BioXTAS RAW is a fully automated program that, via an online feature, reads raw two-dimensional SAXS detector output files and processes and plots data as the data files are created during measurement sessions. The software handles all steps in the data reduction. This includes mask creation, radial averaging, error bar calculation, artifact removal, normalization and q calibration. Further data reduction such as background subtraction and absolute intensity scaling is fast and easy via the graphical user interface. BioXTAS RAW also provides preliminary analysis of one-dimensional data in terms of the indirect Fourier transform using the objective Bayesian approach to obtain the pair-distance distribution function, PDDF, and is thereby a free and open-source alternative to existing PDDF estimation software. Apart from the TIFF input format, the program also accepts ASCII-format input files and is currently compatible with one-dimensional data files from SAXS beamlines at a number of synchrotron facilities. A small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) set-up has recently been developed at beamline 1711 at the MAX II storage ring in Lund (Sweden). An overview of the required modifications is presented here together with a number of application examples. The accessible q range in a SAXS experiment is 0.009-0.3 Å-1 for the standard set-up but depends on the sample-to-detector distance, detector offset, beamstop size and wavelength. The SAXS camera has been designed to have a low background and has three collinear slit sets for collimating the incident beam. The standard beam size is about 0.37 mm × 0.37 mm (full width at half- maximum) at the sample position, with a flux of 4 × 1010 photons s-1 and &#x03BB: = 1.1 Å. The vacuum is of the order of 0.05 mbar in the unbroken beam path from the first slits until the exit window in front of the detector. A large sample chamber with a number of lead-throughs allows different sample environments to be mounted. This station is used for measurements on weakly scattering proteins in solutions and also for colloids, polymers and other nanoscale structures. A special application supported by the beamline is the effort to establish a micro-fluidic sample environment for structural analysis of samples that are only available in limited quantities. Most infants are infected with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during the first 2 y of life. The majority have only a mild upper respiratory tract infection, but 1–2% develop a more severe illness and are admitted to hospital. To carry out a study of risk factors for hospital admission because of RSV infection in Denmark in children aged less than 2 y of age. The study population included all 1252 children admitted to hospital with verified RSV infection in two Danish counties during the 5-y period 1990–1994. The investigation comprised a retrospective case-control study with five matched controls per case. In a multivariate analysis the risk factors included medical and demographic variables, and in infants <3 mo of age at hospitalization, two aspects of innate immunity: mannose-binding lectin (MBL) concentration and maternal RSV serum antibody titre, measured on eluates from stored dried blood from the infants’ 4th day of life. The effect of each risk factor is expressed as an odds ratio, corresponding to the relative risk of being a case rather than a control if the risk factor is present. The following independent risk factors were identified: age, sex, month of birth, gestational age, birthweight, presence of a sibling, up to 5 y older than the case, and maternal smoking during pregnancy. There was a marginal effect of maternal RSV antibody levels, but no effect of neonatal serum MBL concentration or of crowding in the household. Ninety percent of cases and 80% of controls had one or more risk factors. Eventhough several factors were found to increase the risk for hospitalization for RSV disease, all the effects were small and no single specific factor could be identified to explain the hospitalization of the minority of children with RSV infection. Mice with different histocompatibility loci on an identical background genome (congenic resistant lines of mice) were used to study the possible influence of the histocompatibility complex on experimental diabetes. The major histocompatibility complex (H-2) was not found to influence the diabetogenic effect of encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus. In contrast the glucose intolerance following heterologous and homologous immunization with pancreatic antigens appeared H-2 influenced. Antibodies against cell surface components on viable B-cells were present in serum from mice with glucose intolerance induced by homologous immunization. The results suggest that the susceptibility to experimental autoimmune diabetes in mice is influenced by the H-2 complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
