Purpose: Both financial and non-financial functions are imbedded in the life-cycle management activities of building assets. These functions provide relevant information for the establishment of operational and maintenance strategies and for decision-making processes related with the timing of major repairs, replacements and rehabilitations. The purpose of this paper is to focus on improving the alignment of financial and non-financial functions related to the recognition that the service potential of buildings should be appropriately funded as it is consumed over its life cycle. Design/methodology/approach: Authors undertake an analysis of depreciation rates used to accommodate a systematic allocation of the depreciable amount of building assets over its useful life. Different depreciation approaches and calculation methods are explored. A case study of a school building portfolio is used to debate situations of misalignment of financial and non-financial depreciation rates. Data mining methods including decision tree and clustering are used to predict equivalent functional depreciation rates of buildings system and subsystems and promote an enhanced alignment with regulated financial depreciation rates toward an optimized life-cycle management of the school building portfolio. Findings: Historical data show the relevance of considering technical and functional characteristics of the building system and their subsystems (landscaping; structure; external elevations and roofs; interior divisions; and services and equipment) when determining depreciation rates for the building assets The case study showed a misalignment of equivalent functional and financial depreciation rates used in the life-cycle management activities of the school building portfolio ranging between 1/1.26 for external elevations and roofs and 1/5.21 for landscaping. Originality/value: Buildings initial technical and functional attributes are affected with its wear, aging or decay, causing loss of value until they reach end-of-life. This paper demonstrates the impact of the different interpretations of the concept of useful life and the subsequent misalignment that it generates between financial functions based on financial depreciation rates and non-financial functions based on historical data and the functional equivalent (technical and functional) depreciation rates. Economic data of 158 public school buildings constructed in Portugal since the 1940s, that sound life-cycle thinking enhances the alignment of both financial and non-financial functions. Scientific community and practitioners of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector have been developing life-cycle cost (LCC) concept for the past decades. However, information on a building's economic performance throughout its life-cycle is seldom readily available or accurate. This hinders the fulfilment of recommendations of international and regional standards, procurement guidelines and regulations, and for building management (BM) professionals to fully incorporate the LCC concept into their daily practice. This paper seeks to contribute to solving these difficulties by presenting a conceptual framework that enables LCC-informed decisions in BM, together with its empirical application to a portfolio of 158 public school buildings in Portugal (constructed area of 1,437,594 m2). It involved the gathering, organization and treatment of historical data of school buildings originally constructed from 1942 onwards. The historical analysis is presented in the form of three types of economic life-cycle key performance indicators (time series, indexes and relative ratios). It originated a database with more than 1.4 million results that offer a profound understanding of historical economic performance of this portfolio. The results can be adapted and used to benchmark or estimate construction, operation, maintenance, repair, replacement, rehabilitation, energy consumption, water consumption and deconstruction costs of buildings throughout the world. Purpose Stakeholders of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector require information on the buildings economic performance throughout its life cycle. This information is neither readily available nor always accurate because building management (BM) professionals still face difficulties to fully incorporate the life cycle cost (LCC) concept into their daily practice. The purpose of this paper is to identify and contribute to solving these difficulties.Design/methodology/approach This paper provides a background knowledge review and set the ground for a structured research roadmap and a management framework that highlight the links and limitations to be addressed within and between LCC and BM. A six-stage method was used for developing conceptual frameworks targeting six goals: establishing a point of departure; mapping sources of information; literature research; notion deconstruction and conceptual categorization; overview of the applicable background knowledge; and structuring of a framework for LCC-informed decisions in BM.Findings Management solutions for the built context are necessarily connected with LCC and BM current concepts such as asset management, project, program and portfolio management, facility management and data management. These management approaches highlight the importance of incorporating life cycle concepts and promote LCC effective application within the AEC sector.Originality/value This paper identifies and discusses current limitations on the information availability for the economic performance of buildings throughout its life cycle. This work also identifies LCC-related topics that need to be further explored or addressed by both the scientific community and practitioners to overcome these limitations and facilitate the integration of the LCC concept into BM activities. Abstract Aim To review the clinical and histological data of 20 cases of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans presenting at two dermatology centres in Lisbon from 1978 to 1998. Patients and methods The 20 subjects comprised nine males and 11 females ranging in age from 25 to 79 years, with highest frequency of subjects in the 30–50 year olds. We reviewed the clinical features, histopathological aspects, including morphologic variants and immunohistochemical studies. Results Median age at diagnosis was 51 years and the trunk was the most frequent location. The characteristic histologic storiform pattern was seen in all cases. Three subjects presented fibrosarcomatous areas, one with myoid differentiation and another with multinucleated giant cells. Immunohistochemical stains revealed CD34 expression in the 18 specimens tested, FXIIIa was negative, and these two antigens proved important for the differential diagnosis of this neoplasm. Local wide excision was performed in 13 cases and seven patients underwent Moh's micrographic surgery. Follow-up ranged from 2 months to 17 years and three recurrences were recorded, two following classical surgery and one after Moh's surgery; there was no difference in the rate of local recurrence (15%) for the two kinds of treatment in our series. The objective of the present study was to investigate the application of a commercial pectolytic enzyme preparation “Ultrazym” during grape maceration for the alternative processing of 7 single varietal Port-Wines (Tinta Barroca, Mourisco Tinto, Tinta Roriz, Rufete, Tinta da Barca, Tinta Santarém and Touriga Nacional). The effect of enzymatic treatment resulted in improvements in: i) juice yield; ii) colour extraction; iii) wine filterability. Juice yields increased by up to 6%, wine colour intensified by up to 40%, and wine filtration speed was considerably more rapid in the enzyme treated wines. © 2000 Altaga. All rights reserved. El efecto del tratamiento enzimático resultó en una mejora: i) del rendimiento en jugo; ii) de la extracción de colorantes; iii) filtrabilidad del vino. Five novel HLA- B alleles were identified by HLA- SBT typing in seven unrelated Brazilian individuals. The new alleles discovered include HLA- B*07:184, B*41:27, B*42:19, B*50:32 and B*57:63 and were officially named by the World Health Organization ( WHO) Nomenclature Committee. All new HLA- B alleles had nonsynonymous nucleotide substitution polymorphisms when compared to their most closely related HLA- B allele. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four novel human leucocyte antigen ( HLA) class II alleles were identified by sequencing-based typing ( SBT) and analysis of the closest-matching alleles from volunteer subjects from the Brazilian Bone Marrow Donor Register ( REDOME, Brazil). The new HLA alleles discovered include DRB1*04:11:03, DRB1*10:05, DRB1*15:94 and DRB1*16:22. Three of the novel alleles had single-nucleotide substitution polymorphisms when compared to their most homologous allele. A new strategy for robust speaker recognition using multiple classifiers in the subband domain is presented. This approach relies on the computation of a basis for the null space to implement an adaptive combination of subband-classifier responses. The simulation results using speech corrupted by different types of environmental noises show that the proposed method significantly outperforms other techniques reported in the literature.
