Two young Miniature Dachshunds were presented with abnormal gait. Magnetic resonance imaging showed, hydrocephalus with expanding fourth ventricle, and syringohydromyelia in the cervical spinal cord. The expression of MRNA of the chemokine receptor CXCR4 in 65 surgically resected mammary adenocarcinomas from cats was investigated by in situ hybridisation. No expression of the receptor's mRNA was detectable in the mammary tissue of healthy cats, but it was expressed in areas adjacent to necrosis, surrounding blood vessels and cells infiltrating the lymphatics of 47 (72.3 per cent) of the 65 samples. There was a significant relationship between lymphatic infiltration by neoplastic cells and the expression of the receptor's MRNA (P<0.005), but there was no significant relationship between its expression and the one-year survival of the cats. The soil yeast Lipomyces starkeyi was tested for its ability to degrade triazine herbicides. Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) was employed as a solid medium in culture plates instead of agar. The cell sizes of the control (without nitrogen source) on the PVA gel plate were much smaller than those on the agar gel plate. The difference between the diameters of the sample and control colonies on the PVA gel plate were almost twice those of the colonies on the agar gel plate (1.9 and 1.0 mm, respectively). Thus, the PVA gel plate is much better than the agar plate for evaluating the degree of utilization of a sole nitrogen source. The yeast grew well (more than 4 mm in diameter) with 1,3,5-triazine or cyanuric acid as nitrogen source. In addition, melamine and thiocyanuric acid inhibited growth of the yeast, and the sizes of colonies were smaller than those of the control. All triazine herbicides tested (simazine, atrazine, cyanazine, ametryn, and prometryn) could be degraded and assimilated by L. starkeyi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses the investigation regarding the reaction of the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes in dogs having cystitis. Accordingly, cystitis has been defined as a common urinary tract disorder in dogs which is associated with a bacterial infection as well as polyp proliferation from the mucosal surface. As part of the study, a variation in the extent and the intensity of the COX-2 expression was observed. The results of the said study have also been discussed.

Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) from nine Japanese wild isolates of Phellinus linteus was carried out to examine their genetic variability. BamHI and EcoRI digests of mtDNAs from these isolates produced four and five distinct RFLP patterns, respectively. By combining the RFLP patterns obtained with the two endonucleases, mtDNAs from the nine isolates could be assigned to five different genotypes, but no mtDNA variation was detected among the isolates collected from a small area. Distance values calculated among all pairs of mtDNA genotypes, based on the presence or absence of comigrating restriction fragments, were clearly smaller than those among the mtDNA genotypes of Lentinula edodes and Pleurotus ostreatus samples collected worldwide, suggesting the necessity of collecting P. linteus wild isolates for genetic resources from geographically wider areas. We report here a case of donor cell leukemia in a female Ph-positive CML patient who received an allogeneic BMT from her HLA-identical brother in the chronic phase and subsequently developed a donor cell Ph-positive ALL. The number of cases of donor cell leukemia after BMT so far reported is less than 20 and in this case, as in the first cases reported by Marmont et aland McCane et al, the original leukemia and donor cell leukemia share the presence of a Ph chromosome.
