ICRF antenna development for DEMO for the pre-conceptual phase is carried out by merging the existing knowledge about multi-strap ITER, JET and ASDEX upgrade antennas. Many aspects are taken over and adapted to DEMO, including the mechanical design and RF performance optimization strategies. The minimization of ICRF-specific plasma-wall interactions is aimed at by optimizing the feeding power balance, a technique already proven in practice. Technological limits elaborated for the components of ITER ICRF system serve as a guideline in the current design process. Cylindrical Langmuir probe measurements in a helium plasma were performed and analysed in the presence of a magnetic field. The plasma is generated in the ALINE device, a cylindrical vessel 1 m long and 30 cm in diameter using a direct coupled RF antenna (νRF = 25 MHz). The density and temperature are of the order of 1016 m−3 and 1.5 eV, respectively, for 1.2 Pa helium pressure and 200 W RF power. The axial magnetic field can be set from 0 up to 0.1 T, and the plasma diagnostic is a RF compensated Langmuir probe, which can be tilted with respect to the magnetic field lines. In the presence of a magnetic field, I(V) characteristics look like asymmetrical double probe ones (tanh-shape), which is due to the trapping of charged particles inside a flux tube connected to the probe on one side and to the wall on the other side. At low tilting angle, high magnetic field amplitude, power magnitude and low He pressure, which are the parameters scanned in our study, a bump can appear on the I(V) in the plasma potential range. We then compare different models for deducing plasma parameters from such unusual bumped curves. Finally, using a fluid model, the bump rising on the characteristics can be explained, assuming a density depletion in the flux tube, and emphasizing the role of the perpendicular transport of ions. A multichannel spectroscopic diagnostic based on the Stark effect on helium lines was developed and implemented in IShTAR (Ion Cyclotron Sheath Test ARrangement) to measure the spatial distribution of electric fields across the radio frequency sheaths of the ion cyclotron antenna. Direct measurements of the DC electric fields in the antenna sheaths are an important missing component in understanding the antenna-plasma edge interactions in magnetically confined fusion plasmas since they will be used to benchmark theoretical models against real antenna operation. Along with the high-resolution Czerny-Turner monochromator and a detector with an intensifier, the hardware relies on the 2 chained set of linear-to-linear fiber bundles that provide seven optical channels capable of resolving an 8.4 mm region in the vicinity of the antenna's box. The diagnostic is supported with local helium gas puff, enabling it to operate in nonhelium plasmas. Spatially resolved electric field was measured for two discharge configurations, one with and one without the ICRF antenna. The results show a clear difference in the shape of the DC electric field's spatial profile for the two cases studied, with the elevated values when the ICRF antenna was operating. In this paper, we construct a numerical technique capable of solving Maxwell's equations in the frequency domain, both in vacuum and in cold magnetized plasma, with a boundary condition that guarantees the existence of a potential associated with the radio frequency electric fields tangential to certain surfaces. This potential is of interest to nonlinear sheath physics, since it enables the calculation of the time-dependent sheath current excited by a single-frequency electromagnetic wave and thereby the associated DC sheath current and sheath potential. Existence of high electric fields near an RF antenna launcher causes a number of parasitic phenomena, such as arcing and impurity release, which seriously deteriorate the performance of an Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies (ICRF) heating scheme in fusion devices. Limited accessibility of the near antenna region in large-scale fusion experiments significantly complicates the associated experimental studies. The IShTAR test facility has been developed with the requirement to provide a better accessibility and diagnosability of plasmas in the direct vicinity of an ICRF antenna. The purpose of this work is to give a detailed description on the experimental setup and the available diagnostics. Furthermore, the paper will demonstrate the capability of the experiment to study phenomena near an ICRF antenna launcher which are relevant for large-scale fusion ion cyclotron resonance heating systems.
