Hydrogen boride (HB), a freestanding 2D hydrogenated‐borophene (borophane) polymorph, is synthesized via ion exchange. HB sheets with a B/H atomic ratio of 1.0 are confirmed to contain three‐center–two‐electron B–H–B bonds and two‐center–two‐electron terminal B–H bonds. The optical properties of HB sheets are expected to be tunable by changing the BHB/BH bond ratio, which alters the electronic structure of HB sheets; however, this is not yet achieved. This study demonstrates that controlling the BHB/BH bond ratio in the HB sheets is possible without altering the hydrogen content by adjusting the volume of ion‐exchange resin during synthesis, thus enabling the tuning of the photoinduced H2 release under UV irradiation. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity correlates with the absorbance ratio of the BHB and BH vibrational modes. Increasing the BHB/BH bond ratio enhances the luminescence intensity, whereas reducing it enhances the photoinduced H2 release rate under UV irradiation. The ability to control the BHB/BH bond ratio of HB sheets provides new avenues for optimizing their properties for various applications, including hydrogen storage and photocatalysis. Ce3+ luminescence depends on both the composition and the structure of host materials, whereas the role of the structure is still not well understood. In this work, Ce:LaB3O6 (LBO) in both single crystalline and glassy forms are synthesized, and their distinctive photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray radioluminescence (XRL) are compared and discussed for the first time from the points of view of structure and defects. Crystalline Ce:LBO exhibits a very narrow PL band centered at 303 nm and a small Stokes shift of 3098 cm−1, while the glassy Ce:LBO emission is broad and bluish, peaking at 396 nm, with a larger Stokes shift of 4778 cm−1. The PL of crystalline Ce:LBO is constant over the whole cryogenic temperature range until the steep Mott–Seitz quenching mechanism starts even below RT. Its PL decay is characterized by a short and single-exponential lifetime of about 15 ns, corresponding to a quantum efficiency (QE) of ∼50%. In contrast, glassy Ce:LBO shows an even higher QE but its PL decreases gradually from the He temperature up until 400 °C with a bi-exponential decay characteristic. Moreover, radio- and thermo-luminescence measurements indicate the presence of a much larger population of defects in glassy than in crystalline Ce:LBO. All the observed luminescence differences mainly stem from the distinct local structures of Ce3+, being a unique single-site in a regular periodic lattice in the case of crystalline Ce:LBO and non-equivalent sites in amorphous glassy Ce:LBO, as found by means of X-ray atomic pair-distribution function analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Time‐resolved pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is performed to clarify the formation mechanism of Li3PS4 sulfide solid electrolytes in liquid phase synthesis with acetonitrile (AN), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and ethyl acetate (EA) solvents. This aims to clarify the relationship between their formations and lithium ionic conductivity. A complex is formed between the precursor of the sulfide solid electrolyte and each solvent during the liquid phase synthesis. The ratio of the solvent to the electrolyte is 3.03 in THF solution. The formation speed of precursors of sulfide solid electrolytes increases in the order AN < THF < EA solution, which is the same order as the lithium ionic conductivity. Thus, the correlation between the ionic conductivity and the formation rate of the precursor of the sulfide solid electrolyte might be related to the stability of the complex formed between Li3PS4 and the solvent during liquid phase synthesis. Controlling the shape and size of nanostructured materials has been a topic of interest in the field of material science for decades. In this work, the ferroelectric material SrxBa1−xNb2O6 (x=0.32–0.82, SBN) was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis, and the morphology is controllably changed from cube‐shaped to hollow‐ended structures based on a fundamental understanding of the precursor chemistry. Synchrotron X‐ray total scattering and PDF analysis was used to reveal the structure of the Nb‐acid precursor, showing Lindqvist‐like motifs. The changing growth mechanism, from layer‐by‐layer growth forming cubes to hopper‐growth giving hollow‐ended structures, is attributed to differences in supersaturation. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an inhomogeneous composition along the length of the hollow‐ended particles, which is explained by preferential formation of the high entropy composition, SBN33, at the initial stages of particle nucleation and growth. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely investigated as electronic or catalytic materials as well as being conventionally used as adsorbents for accommodating guest molecules in the interlayer spaces. 2D coordination polymers have flexible structures, which are transformed even by a weak external stimulus such as a humidity change. Here we report a structural analysis and proton conductivity measurements of a 2D cyano-bridged coordination polymer of the Mn[Ni(CN)4] system upon dehydration and rehydration. The structure of the sample at high humidity was determined by single-crystal diffraction, while the structure at low humidity was solved by Rietveld analysis of synchrotron powder diffraction data. At high humidity, the material contains coordinated and non-coordinated water molecules as [Mn(H2O)2Ni(CN)4]·3H2O. These water molecules were further analyzed by TG-DTA and classified into three types: (i) two coordinated molecules, (ii) two weakly adsorbed non-coordinated molecules and (iii) a strongly adsorbed non-coordinated molecule. These water molecules play a key role in crystal structure transformation upon dehydration/hydration, where the two-dimensional coordination network is retained but the curvature changes by tilting of MnO6 octahedra owing to the change in hydrogen bonds between the water molecules. Because the water molecules form hydrogen bonding networks, proton conductivity was expected. Thus, we investigated the proton conductivity using the single-crystal AC impedance method and found that the crystals were insulating. This in turn suggests that the water molecules in the interlayer spaces do not dissociate into protons mostly, and the spaces are non-ionic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A dedicated apparatus has been developed for studying structural changes in amorphous and disordered crystalline materials substantially in real time. The apparatus, which can be set up on beamlines BL04B2 and BL08W at SPring‐8, mainly consists of a large two‐dimensional flat‐panel detector and high‐energy X‐rays, enabling total scattering measurements to be carried out for time‐resolved pair distribution function (PDF) analysis in the temperature range from room temperature to 873 K at pressures of up to 20 bar. For successful time‐resolved analysis, a newly developed program was used that can monitor and process two‐dimensional image data simultaneously with the data collection. The use of time‐resolved hardware and software is of great importance for obtaining a detailed understanding of the structural changes in disordered materials, as exemplified by the results of commissioned measurements carried out on both beamlines. Benchmark results obtained using amorphous silica and demonstration results for the observation of sulfide glass crystallization upon annealing are introduced. A new apparatus for total scattering measurements has been developed with a variable camera length using a 16‐inch two‐dimensional flat‐panel detector to observe structural changes in amorphous and disordered crystalline materials substantially in real time on beamlines BL08W and BL04B2 at SPring‐8. Owing to the inexpensiveness and non‐toxicity of iron, development of highly active and simple homogeneous iron photocatalysts is a crucially important, while challenging, for practical organic synthetic reactions. Here we report that iron(III) nitrate, which is one of the most typical iron salts and can form iron aquo complexes in aqueous and organic solutions, can be used as a highly efficient and selective homogeneous photocatalyst for fine chemical synthesis. We demonstrated the iron aquo complexes catalyzed the oxidation of cyclohexane into cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone with a turnover number (TON) of 88 and a nearly 100 % selectivity using O2 under irradiation of solar light, whereas existing TiO2 and α‐Fe2O3 heterogeneous photocatalysts showed low TON and no activity. The iron aquo complexes impregnated within a mesoporous silica showed the improved TON of up to 100 while maintaining nearly 100 % selectivity. Iron for oxidation: Simple iron(III) aquo complex, [Fe(H2O)6]3+, can be used as an unprecedentedly highly effective and selective homogeneous photocatalyst for partial oxidation of cyclohexane to produce higher value products using O2 under irradiation of solar light. A mesostructured tin phosphate (SnPi) material has been prepared in the presence of an amphiphilic block copolymer (F127), tin chloride (SnCl4), and phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in an ethanol–water mixed solvent medium. The mesoporous SnPi material, with a large pore diameter (7.4 nm), nanocrystalline walls, a high surface area (310 m2 g−1), and a unique flake-like particle shape, is successfully synthesized by a two-step heat treatment of the parent mesostructured SnPi under flowing N2 gas followed by flowing air. Under moderate conditions (293 K and 60% relative humidity), our mesoporous SnPi shows 6.5 times more proton (H+) conductivity compared to its non-porous/bulk analogue (SnPi-B), due to its higher surface area and unique nanocrystalline porous structure enriched with free O–H groups. The preliminary electrochemical properties of our crystalline mesoporous SnPi as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been studied as well, which exhibits good reversible specific capacity with good cycling stability and excellent capacity retention of 92%. Synthesizing manganese oxide materials with exact control of the nanoparticle shape and phase is difficult, making it challenging to understand the influence of the surface structure on electrocatalysis. Here we describe an inexpensive, low-temperature method to synthesize single-crystal orthorhombic phase α-Mn2O3 prisms bound by the {100} facets. The synthesis is the first method to use the cation bridging effect to assist in the creation of α-Mn2O3 prisms. According to structural analysis using X-ray diffraction, X-ray pair-distribution function (PDF) measurements and high resolution transmission electron microscopy, the material is composed exclusively of α-Mn2O3 prisms, and no additional amorphous or nanocrystalline phases are present. Heating the prisms transformed the material to a more symmetrical, cubic phase α-Mn2O3 that exhibited strong bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution (OER) and oxygen reduction (ORR) reactions. We compared the oxygen electrode activities (OEA) and found that the α-Mn2O3 prisms performed 79% better than commercially-produced α-Mn2O3 powders, indicating that these α-Mn2O3 prisms perform well as inexpensive, earth-abundant materials for reversible electrodes. The synthesis of a novel family of cyano-bridged trimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) with various compositions and shapes has been reported by changing the compositional ratios of Fe, Co, and Ni species in the reaction system. In order to efficiently control the nucleation rate and the crystal growth, trisodium citrate dihydrate plays an important role as a chelating agent. After the obtained cyano-bridged trimetallic CPs undergo thermal treatment in air at three different temperatures (250, 350, and 450 °C), nanoporous spinel metal oxides are successfully obtained. Interestingly, the obtained nanoporous metal oxides are composed of small crstalline grains, and the grains are oriented in the same direction, realizing pseudo-single crystals with nanopores. The resultant nanoporous spinel oxides feature interesting magnetic properties. Cyano-bridged multimetallic CPs with various sizes and shapes can provide a pathway toward functional nanoporous metal oxides that are not attainable from simple cyano-bridged CPs containing single metal ions. Eleven novel coordination compounds, composed of chrysazin (1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone) and different first-row transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu), were synthesised and the structures determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The synthetic trends were investigated using high-throughput synthesis under systematic variation of concentration and reagent stoichiometry: for complexes containing Co, Ni or Cu crystallisation was improved by low ligand : metal ratios, while the effect of concentration depended on the metal used. The compounds crystallise as discrete clusters, apart from two, which contain long Cu–O bonds which may allow the two compounds to be considered one-dimensional coordination polymers. One of these compounds shows a distance between aryl rings of less than 3.26 Å, which is shorter than that in graphite, suggesting applications as an organic–inorganic semiconductor. The compound was found to be insulating by single-crystal and powder AC-impedance measurements, and this result is discussed with reference to the electronic structure calculated using density-functional theory. Deposition of Ni-based cyanide bridged coordination polymer (NiCNNi) flakes onto the surfaces of graphene oxide (GO) sheets, which allows precise control of the resulting lamellar nanoarchitecture by in situ crystallization, is reported. GO sheets are utilized as nucleation sites that promote the optimized crystal growth of NiCNNi flakes. The NiCNNicoated GO sheets then self-assemble and are stabilized as ordered lamellar nanomaterials. Regulated thermal treatment under nitrogen results in a Ni3C-GO composite with a similar morphology to the starting material, and the Ni3C-GO composite exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity and excellent durability for the oxygen reduction reaction. An oriented and controlled crystal growth of cyano-bridged coordination polymers is realized by a controlling agent (e.g., trisodium citrate dihydrate (TSCD)) as a reaction precursor. In the presence of TSCD, the reaction is slow as the complex appears to be more stable, leading to a preferentially oriented crystal growth. For instance, after mixing manganese acetate with TSCD, the formed Mn–citrate complex tends to release few Mn2+ ions steadily and slowly, which then react with the ligands at the initial stage of the reaction. Subsequently, the generated nuclei further grow from the interaction between the released Mn2+ and [Mn(CN)6]3−, [Co(CN)6]3−, or [Ru(CN)6]4− anions to form several types of cyano-bridged coordination polymers (abbreviated as MnCNMn, MnCNCo, or MnCNRu, respectively). After thermal treatment in air, the as-prepared coordination polymers can be decomposed into their corresponding nanoporous Mn-based oxides. Surprisingly, the electrochemical analysis reveals that the Mn–Ru oxide prepared from MnCNRu is a promising catalyst for the production of H2O2 by selectively catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through an exact 2-electron pathway. Compared to previously reported materials, our electrocatalyst demonstrates an outstanding activity, a strict selectivity, and a long-term stability for the production of H2O2. Mesoporous Au films consisting of a network of interconnected Au ligaments around ultra-large pores were found to exhibit a promising electrocatalytic activity towards sluggish reactions. Mesoporous Au films with pore sizes up to 25 nm were successfully fabricated using a polymeric micelle approach. A superior catalytic activity of the mesoporous Au films towards methanol oxidation was confirmed, which was thoroughly analyzed and compared with that of other Au materials. An intrinsic investigation on the high catalytic activity revealed that the superior performance of the as-prepared mesoporous Au film was related to its unique atomic structures around the mesopores with well-crystallized facets and several step/kink sites on the Au surfaces. These findings showcase a strategic and feasible design for preparing highly active Au-based catalysts that could be used as promising candidates in electrocatalytic applications. The understanding of lithium–oxygen coordination systems is important for making better lithium conductors as well as active materials for lithium ion batteries. Here, we report a systematic investigation on coordination environments in lithium coordination polymers (LCPs) through the syntheses and analyses of six new crystals composed of lithium ions and anthraquinone (aq) derivative anions, where the negative charges are distributed in π-conjugation systems. Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction to be (1) [Li2(23dcaq)(H2O)] in space group P21/c, (2) [Li(23dcaqH)] in P21/c, (3) [Li2(15dhaq)(H2O)2] in P21/c, (4) [Li2(14dhaq)(H2O)2] in Pnma, (5) [Li(14dhaqH)(H2O)] in P212121 and (6) [Li(14hnaq)(H2O)] in P212121 (23dcaq2− = 2,3-dicarboxy-aq, 14dhaq2− = 1,4-dihydroxy-aq, 15dhaq2− = 1,5-dihydroxy-aq and 14hnaq− = 1-hydroxy-4-nitro-aq). Through the comprehensive structure analysis of these materials as well as other LCPs, we found that when considering the longest C–O bond in the π-conjugation system of an anionic organic molecule and its coordination to a Li ion, there is a weak inverse relationship between the C–O and Li–O bond lengths. In addition, despite exhibiting optical band edges below 2 eV and 1D π-stacking connectivity, conductivity measurements on single crystals of 1–6 confirmed that they are all electronic insulators. We rationalize this finding on the basis of π-orbital delocalization, which is more restricted in the aq-based LCPs compared to known semiconducting hybrid materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report that a nanoporous Au film capped with a dielectric surface layer enables the effective absorption of near-infrared light and intense emission of two-photon luminescence. In this approach, nanoscale pores in Au are incorporated by chemical dissolution and microscale surface patterns are added on the nanoporous Au by microcontact print lithography. Electromagnetic simulation shows that the strong local electric fields are concentrated in the vicinity of nanopores in the Au film and are further increased by the surface dielectric patterns, which leads to a 40-fold increase in the intensity of the two-photon luminescence, as verified by photoemission measurement. Six novel crystalline coordination polymers composed of alkali metal ions and trithiocyanurate anions (C3N3S3H2− = ttcH2−) were synthesized. Single crystals were used both for structure determinations by X-ray diffraction and ionic conductivity measurements by AC impedance methods. The structures are: (i) sodium trithiocyanurate trihydrate, Na(ttcH2)(H2O)3 in space group P21; (ii) potassium trithiocyanurate hydrate, K(ttcH2)(H2O) in P1̅; (iii) rubidium trithiocyanurate hydrate, Rb(ttcH2)(H2O) in P1̅; (iv) rubidium trithiocyanurate hydrate, Rb3(ttcH2)2(ttcH3)2(H2O)5(OH) in P1̅; and (v, vi) two anhydrous polymorphs of caesium trithiocyanurates, Cs(ttcH2) in P1̅ and Cc. With the exception of the sodium phase, which is layered, all of these compounds consist of three dimensional coordination networks. In all systems, the inorganic regions are interleaved by arrays of ttcH2− anions. The most interesting feature of this system is the thiol-rich environment formed between the trithiocyanurate layers, where alkali metal ions are located. Water molecules, where present, are always coordinated to a cation. Among these crystals, K(ttcH2)(H2O) exhibited proton conductivity under atmospheric conditions (25 ± 0.2 °C): 1.1 × 10−5 S cm−1 in the direction perpendicular to the bc plane and 3.1 × 10−6 S cm−1 along the c axis. PdCo alloy is a promising catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction of direct methanol fuel cells because of its high activity and the tolerance to methanol. We have applied this catalyst in order to realize on-chip fuel cell which is a membraneless design. The novel design made the fuel cells to be flexible and integratable with other microdevices. Here, we summarize our recent research on the synthesis of nanostructured PdCo catalyst by electrochemical methods, which enable us to deposit the alloy onto microelectrodes of the on-chip fuel cells. First, the electrodeposition of PdCo is discussed in detail, and then, dealloying for introducing nanopores into the electrodeposits is described. This paper reviews important research on chemical and electrochemical synthesis and application of nanoparticles, especially our recent results in this field: (i) catalytic metal nanoparticles for micro-fuel cells, (ii) magnetic oxide nanoparticles for drug delivery systems, and (iii) magnetic metal nanoparticles for magnetic recording media. To fulfill the requirements of each application, we chose and modified those synthetic methods for obtaining suitable properties, e.g., morphology, catalytic activity, and magnetic properties. (i) For micro-fuel cells, electrodeposition is attractive because of its selective deposition onto current collectors and possible elimination of an annealing process. As a result, we have successfully synthesized Pt, PtRu alloy, and PdCo alloy, which consisted of dendritic structures macroscopically and of interconnected nanoparticles microscopically. (ii) For drug delivery systems, since magnetic nanoparticles should possess ferromagnetism, be dispersible in water, and be nontoxic, Fe3O4 nanoparticles synthesized by hydrolysis in aqueous media are suitable. As a result, we have successfully controlled the size (10-40 nm in diameter) and the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 nanoparticles by means of adjusting the molar ratio of ferrous to ferric ions in the precursor solution. (iii) For magnetic recording materials, since magnetic nanoparticles should possess high coercivity, a controlled shape, and a uniform small size, we have modified a chemical method for synthesizing FePt by adjusting the growth temperature. A mesoporous PtCu catalyst modified with a Ru submonolayer is successfully synthesized by a facile electrochemical process of electrodeposition, dealloying and Ru underpotential deposition. The Cover Feature shows that iron(III) aquo complexes can be used as a homogeneous photocatalysts for green fine chemical synthesis. In their Communication, M. F. Iqbal et al. demonstrate that the iron aquo complexes catalyze the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone with a turnover number (TON) of 88 and a nearly 100% selectivity using O2 under irradiation of solar light, whereas existing TiO2 and α‐Fe2O3 heterogeneous photocatalysts showed low TON and no activity.
