Abstract

Japan's start-up ecosystem is globally recognized but underperforms relative to its economic strength and investment in R&D. This study explores the challenges within Tokyo's ecosystem, focusing on academic-business collaborations in the Hongo-Marunouchi district, home to leading universities and major corporations. Having conducted surveys in Tokyo with the aim of examining the local dynamics, we reflected the outcomes with the data obtained from overseas fieldwork in globally competitive ecosystems. The analysis reveals that three key elements--People, Program, and Place--serve as critical connectors within the ecosystem, essential for accelerating start-up growth. Based on these insights, we recommend the development of an innovation district in Hongo-Marunouchi to stimulate start-up activity and foster a thriving ecosystem. This district would enable anchor institutions to capitalize on a dynamic street culture, promoting start-up growth while generating broader, sustainable benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study employs a pre-post survey design, engaging a purposive-convenience sample of 94 U.S. college athletes who participated in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics across eight sports and 22 countries. Utilizing validated scales, participants' group, national, and athletic identities were measured weeks before and after the event. Paired sample t-tests and a repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance were utilized to understand the effects of time and demographic variables on these identities. Results revealed that after competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, college athletes exhibited a significant decrease in their group identity and a significant increase in their national identity, while their athletic identity remained relatively unchanged. The results were qualified by student status interactions such that international students showed a significant decrease in group identity and a significant increase in national identity after competing in Tokyo 2020, with no significant changes observed in these identities for domestic students. The results illuminate a complex process of identity negotiation experienced by collegiate Olympic athletes that transition between Olympic and college sport environments. This study contributes to sport management literature by offering nuanced insights into the dynamics of role-switching, urging stakeholders to utilize these findings to enhance the experiences of college athletes. 9. Epidemiological impact of revoking mask-wearing recommendation on COVID-19 transmission in Tokyo, Japan.

Abstract

Despite the global implementation of COVID-19 mitigation measures, the disease continues to maintain transmission. Although mask wearing became one of the key measures for preventing the transmission of COVID-19 early in the pandemic period, many countries have relaxed the mandatory or recommended wearing of masks. The objective of the present study was to estimate the epidemiological impact of removing the mask-wearing recommendation in Japan. We developed a model to assess the consequences of declining mask-wearing coverage after the government revoked its recommendation in February 2023. The declining mask-wearing coverage was estimated using serial cross-sectional data, and a mathematical model was devised to determine the age-specific incidence of COVID-19 using the observed case count in Tokyo from week of October 3, 2022 to October 30, 2023. We explored model-based counterfactual scenarios to measure hypothetical situations in which the mask-wearing coverage decreases or increases relative to the observed coverage. The results show that mask-wearing coverage declined from 97% to 69% by the week of October 30, 2023, and that if the mask-wearing recommendation had continued, 427 lives could have been saved in Tokyo. If the mask-wearing coverage had declined to 25% of the observed level, the model suggests there might have been 1587 additional deaths. Thus, revoking the mask-wearing recommendation had a substantial epidemiological impact.
