Abstract

The article presents a research study on cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) submitted to oxidative stress. It is hypothesized that Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) could reduce the oxidative stress damages via inhibition of apoptosis due to the ischemia/reperfusion sequence. Under the study, smooth muscle cells were isolated from the aorta of Wistar rats and cultured until fifth passage. The findings of the study show that ERK1/2 kinases are only slightly activated by the generated oxidative stress. On the other hand, pretreatment by CGRP significantly increased the level of activation.
