The organic matter content of marine sediments is often used to infer past changes in ocean conditions. However, the organic carbon pool preserved in coastal sediments is a complex mixture derived from different sources and may not reflect in situ processes. In this study, we combine taxonomic identification of reworked palynomorphs with pyrolysis organic geochemistry and reflected‐light organic petrographic microscopy to investigate the provenance, composition and preservation of organic matter in a marine sediment core retrieved from the NE Greenland shelf. Our study reveals continuous yet variable input of land‐derived organic carbon to the marine environment throughout the late Younger Dryas–Holocene, with the highest input of inert carbon in the late Younger Dryas. Although the sediments contain some recent marine palynomorphs, there is no other evidence of fresh marine organic carbon. In contrast, our results indicate that these shelf sediments represent a significant sink of recycled organic carbon. The results of pyrolysis geochemistry revealed that ~90% of the total organic carbon in the sediments is inert. The organic petrography analyses revealed that >70–84% of the organic carbon in the sediment core is terrigenous. Reworked dinoflagellate cysts showed a continuous provenance of Cretaceous land‐derived material, most likely from the nearby Clavering Island. Our study points to the importance of constraining the organic matter origin, composition and preservation in marine sediments to achieve more accurate palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on organic proxies. There is a temporal correlation between the peak activity of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) and the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), suggesting that the NAIP may have initiated and/or prolonged this extreme warming event. However, corroborating a causal relationship is hampered by a scarcity of expanded sedimentary records that contain both climatic and volcanic proxies. One locality hosting such a record is the island of Fur in Denmark, where an expanded pre- to post-PETM succession containing hundreds of NAIP ash layers is exceptionally well preserved. We compiled a range of environmental proxies, including mercury (Hg) anomalies, paleotemperature proxies, and lithium (Li) and osmium (Os) isotopes, to trace NAIP activity, hydrological changes, weathering, and seawater connectivity across this interval. Volcanic proxies suggest that NAIP activity was elevated before the PETM and appears to have peaked during the body of the δ13 C excursion but decreased considerably during the PETM recovery. This suggests that the acme in NAIP activity, dominated by flood basalt volcanism and thermogenic degassing from contact metamorphism, was likely confined to just ∼ 200 kyr (ca. 56.0–55.8 Ma). The hundreds of thick (> 1 cm) basaltic ashes in the post-PETM strata likely represent a change from effusive to explosive activity, rather than an increase in NAIP activity. Detrital δ7 Li values and clay abundances suggest that volcanic ash production increased the basaltic reactive surface area, likely enhancing silicate weathering and atmospheric carbon sequestration in the early Eocene. Signals in lipid biomarkers and Os isotopes, traditionally used to trace paleotemperature and weathering changes, are used here to track seaway connectivity. These proxies indicate that the North Sea was rapidly cut off from the North Atlantic in under 12 kyr during the PETM recovery due to NAIP thermal uplift. Our findings reinforce the hypothesis that the emplacement of the NAIP had a profound and complex impact on Paleocene–Eocene climate, both directly through volcanic and thermogenic degassing and indirectly by driving regional uplift and changing seaway connectivity. The Mochras core, UK, an historic reference site for the study of Early Jurassic calcareous nannofossils, has been reinvestigated here across the Hettangian to Lower Pliensbachian. Both relative and absolute abundances of 24 calcareous nannofossil species reveal patterns and occurrences that define not less than 37 defined biohorizons. However, due to the low abundance of many of those species towards the base and top of their stratigraphical range, we observe large inconsistencies in first and last occurrences of these species. Instead, we consider records of first consistent and last consistent occurrences (FCOs and LCOs), as well as base and top of acme events, as more reliable biohorizons. Accordingly, we assess the reliability of our biohorizons and show that, in addition to previously established zonal and sub-zonal biomarkers, nine non-zonal biohorizons prove to be robust. A peculiar record of previously undescribed and/or rarely described nannoliths from the Hettangian to lower Pliensbachian of the Llanbdr (Mochras Farm) core, Wales (UK) is documented here. Some of the observed morphotypes are assigned to didemnid ascidians, commonly observed in the upper Rhaetian, as evidence of the resilience of ascidian tunicates during the end‐Triassic mass extinction. One newly described nannolith present throughout the Hettangian and Sinemurian, Quadrifolium hesselboi, is similar to forms previously observed in the upper Rhaetian, and is therefore considered to be a new nannofossil survivor from the end‐Triassic mass extinction. High‐amplitude changes observed in the absolute and relative abundances of nannoliths, schizosphaerellids and coccoliths across the Hettangian suggest a recovery interval from the end‐Triassic crisis spanning the planorbis–liasicus ammonite zones in four distinct steps with high volatility in environmental conditions, followed by the establishment of more stable environmental conditions in the angulata ammonite zone. Ikaite and pseudomorphs thereafter ("glendonites") are a potentially powerful tool for palaeoclimatic studies, as a low-temperature proxy. However, much uncertainty still surrounds the drivers of ikaite formation, in particular prerequisite thermal and chemical conditions. Furthermore, the ikaite to glendonite transformation is not fully understood, and it was unclear which calcite phases in glendonites were ikaite-derived and which were later diagenetic calcites. This leads to difficulties in choosing which phase to analyse in order to reconstruct the original ikaite growth environmental conditions. Petrographic examination of air-transformed ikaite from the Isatkoak Lagoon in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, confirms that both 'Type I' and 'Type II' calcite phases seen in glendonites are directly derived from ikaite breakdown and not from secondary sources. Clumped isotope temperature reconstructions for transformed ikaites from Utqiaġvik, and comparison to Recent glendonites from the White Sea, Russia, confirm that clumped isotope thermometry may be used to reconstruct ikaite growth temperatures, whilst stable isotopes and minor elemental analysis reveal that a range of geochemical conditions characterise ikaite growth sites. Cylindrical borings assigned to ichnospecies Trypanites mobilis Neumann, Wisshak & Bromley, 2008, are common in bulbous echinoid spines (Tylocidaris baltica and Ty. vexilifera) and globular calcareous sponges (Porosphaera globularis) from the Maastrichtian chalk and Danian limestone of eastern Denmark. Trypanites mobilis was originally described as being restricted to these substrates but is here reported also from crinoid fragments and asteroid ossicles. A revised diagnosis of Tr. mobilis is proposed to accommodate the broader spectrum of host bioclasts and the fact that some bioclasts, notably Porosphaera, are fully penetrated. Trypanites mobilis is interpreted as a mobile shelter for sipunculan worms and the first appearance of this trace fossil around the Early/Late Cretaceous transition is inferred to reflect intensified predation pressure, and a general shortage of hard substrates on the muddy chalk sea floor. Trypanites mobilis is very common in the Maastrichtian of Denmark. It then nearly disappears in the lower Danian, re-occurs in the middle Danian, at first with smaller sizes and in low numbers, before becoming numerous and large-sized again around the middle/upper Danian transition. The near absence of Tr. mobilis in the lower Danian and its low abundance in the middle Danian is suggested to reflect that the ‘substrate makers’ were affected by ecological instability following the Cretaceous–Palaeogene mass extinction. The Lower Cretaceous Tuxen (lower Hauterivian - upper Barremian) and Sola (upper Barremian - Albian) Formations in the Danish Central Graben (North Sea) constitute one of the oldest chalk successions recorded globally, but have received little attention with regards to sedimentary facies and depositional processes. This study presents the first comprehensive carbonate facies analysis of the succession, retrieved from seven drill cores from the Valdemar and Adda Fields. A total of 50 facies are identified, based on a continuum of six lithologies ranging from chalk to marlstone and tuffaceous siltstone to sandstone that display eight different sedimentary structures or fabrics, and two redox-associated lithological color variations (green and red) in the Adda Field. The eight sedimentary structures record: (i) comprehensive bioturbation of homogeneous sediment during fully oxygenated benthic conditions and low sedimentation rates; (ii) a similar bioturbation process but in heterogeneous sediment with lithological contrasts permitting visible burrows to form, perhaps due to rhythmic alternation between pelagic (clay-poor) and hemipelagic (clay-rich) sedimentation; (iii) pelagic to hemipelagic suspension settling in dysoxic to anoxic bottom-water conditions; (iv) patchy cementation of the shallow sea bed during incipient hardground formation; (v) reworking of bioclasts and chalk intraclasts by bottom or wave-induced currents and cohesive debris flows; (vi) pressure solution during late burial diagenesis; (vii) shear deformation by intense plastic deformation of unlithified sediment from limited lateral displacement; and (viii) silicification during burial diagenesis. The facies distribution indicates that active tectonism took place prior to the onset of anoxia that resulted in deposition of the Munk Marl Bed, which in the Valdemar Field was followed by tectonic waning and repeated anoxia. The Valdemar Field constituted a basinal depocenter and was flanked to the east by an early inversion high in the Adda Field characterized by condensation and bypass. The Cambrian is the most poorly dated period of the past 541 million years. This hampers analysis of profound environmental and biological changes that took place during this period. Astronomically forced climate cycles recognized in sediments and anchored to radioisotopic ages provide a powerful geochronometer that has fundamentally refined Mesozoic–Cenozoic time scales but not yet the Palaeozoic. Here we report a continuous astronomical signal detected as geochemical variations (1 mm resolution) in the late Cambrian Alum Shale Formation that is used to establish a 16-Myr-long astronomical time scale, anchored by radioisotopic dates. The resulting time scale is biostratigraphically well-constrained, allowing correlation of the late Cambrian global stage boundaries with the 405-kyr astrochronological framework. This enables a first assessment, in numerical time, of the evolution of major biotic and abiotic changes, including the end-Marjuman extinctions and the Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion, that characterized the late Cambrian Earth. The current study presents new bed‐by‐bed brachiopod δ13C and δ18O records from Öland, Sweden, which together with previously published data from the East Baltic region, constitutes a high‐resolution paired brachiopod and bulk rock carbon and oxygen isotope archive through the Lower to Upper Ordovician successions of Baltoscandia. This new data set refines the temporal control on the global Ordovician δ18O‐trend considerably, improving paleoenvironmental reconstructions through the main phase of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE). The new brachiopod carbon and oxygen isotope records from Öland display strong similarity with the East Baltic records, elucidating the regional consistency as well as global correlation utility of the ensuing composite Baltoscandian Lower to Middle Ordovician carbon and oxygen isotope record. The carbon isotope record from Öland indicates that the widely reported Middle Ordovician carbon cycle perturbation—MDICE (Mid‐Darriwilian Carbon Isotope Excursion)—is recorded in both brachiopods and bulk carbonates. The oxygen isotope record reveals a long‐term Lower to Upper Ordovician trend of increasingly heavier brachiopod δ18O values, with a pronounced increase during the Middle Ordovician Darriwilian Stage. We interpret this trend as dominantly reflecting a paleotemperature signal indicating progressively cooler Early to Middle Ordovician climate with glacio‐eustasy. Our Baltic δ18O values are therefore consistent with postulations that the biotic radiations during the GOBE and climatic cooling during the Darriwilian were strongly linked. Plain Language Summary: Oxygen isotope values obtained from fossil brachiopod shells have traditionally been used as a faithful paleoclimatic proxy to shed light on temperature trends in ancient oceans. However, because brachiopod shells are susceptible to diagenetic overprint after burial, secular oxygen isotope trends derived from these fossils are often questioned—notably the farther one goes back in geological time. This study presents temporally well‐resolved oxygen isotope data from Lower–lower Upper Ordovician sedimentary rocks of Öland, Sweden, tied precisely to conodont biostratigraphy on the bed‐by‐bed scale. This interval is important in Earth history as it brackets the greatest marine biodiversification event known in the fossil record and coincides with a global climatic cooling phase (determined based on proxies other than oxygen isotopes). The current study therefore provides an excellent test of the spatial and temporal consistency of the secular Ordovician oxygen isotope trend. We find that although our data is probably affected by diagenetic modification, primary paleoclimatic signals are preserved. Furthermore, as current global Ordovician oxygen isotope records lack sufficient resolution because they comprise data from geographically widely distributed low‐paleolatitude localities, our new high‐resolution data set from one mid‐paleolatitude region, provides significant temporal insights that considerably improves our understanding of the Ordovician climate. Meso-Cenozoic evidence suggests links between changes in the expression of orbital changes and millennia-scale climatic- and biotic variations, but proof for such shifts in orbital cyclicity farther back in geological time is lacking. Here, we report a 469-million-year-old Palaeozoic energy transfer from precession to 405 kyr eccentricity cycles that coincides with the start of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE). Based on an early Middle Ordovician astronomically calibrated cyclostratigraphic framework we find this orbital change to succeed the onset of icehouse conditions by 200,000 years, suggesting a climatic origin. Recently, this icehouse was postulated to be facilitated by extra-terrestrial dust associated with an asteroid breakup. Our timescale, however, shows the meteor bombardment to post-date the icehouse by 800,000 years, instead pausing the GOBE 600,000 years after its initiation. Resolving Milankovitch cyclicity in deep time thus suggests universal orbital control in modulating climate, and maybe even biodiversity accumulation, through geological time. The Middle Ordovician icehouse has been suggested to be sparked by extra-terrestrial dust associated with an asteroid break-up. We report on new collections of cephalopods (ammonites and nautilids) from the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) successions of the Corsicana and Kincaid formations exposed along the Brazos River in Falls County, Texas. An abundant fauna of eight species comprising four genera of ammonites is described from the Corsicana Formation, including Discoscaphites mullinaxorum n. sp. The presence of abundant aptychi (probably lower jaws) of Discoscaphites and Eubaculites, as well as juvenile specimens, indicates a living population that experienced little postmortem drift. The lytoceratid genus Gaudryceras is also reported for the first time from the Brazos River area. Presence of the index taxon Discoscaphites iris (Conrad, 1858) indicates that the fauna belongs to the D. iris Range Zone, the highest ammonite range zone in North America. Correlation with new and existing microfossil data indicates that the fauna represents the uppermost Maastrichtian, and comparison with published records further suggests that this is the most diverse D. iris Zone fauna yet reported from the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains of North America. Three ammonite genera are recorded from the basal units of the K-Pg event deposit at Brazos, which likely represents deposition in the immediate aftermath of the Chicxulub impact event. A single specimen of the nautilid Eutrephoceras is reported from the Danian Kincaid Formation, less than 300 kyr after the K-Pg boundary. These data provide new information on the differing fate of these cephalopod groups during the K-Pg mass extinction and add to the picture of diverse and abundant Maastrichtian ammonite faunas prior to the Chicxulub impact event. A 460 m long profile of the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-T) boundary strata at Stevns Klint was measured by the late Professor A. Rosenkrantz probably in 1944. The measured profile was inherited by Finn Surlyk around 1974 together with other original boundary data. This material was dug up in a long-forgotten drawer in connection with detailed field work by the co-authors on the boundary succession in the late spring and summer of 2021. The profile illustrates the stratigraphy, geometry and palaeotopography of the boundary strata in unprecedented detail. The part of the cliff illustrated in the profile is today partly covered by beach ridges composed of flint rubble but is situated below the finest section of the lower Danian bryozoan mounds exposed at Stevns Klint. This coastal section is situated immediately adjacent to a large limestone quarry and was planned to be quarried away around 1937, but was saved by A. A detailed biostratigraphic, chemostratigraphic, and chronostratigraphic study was carried out in the South‐Western margin of the Neo‐Tethys ocean (Tunisia) covering the Eocene‐Oligocene interval to report potential paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic changes associated with the growth of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS). The studied section consists of marls and limestones extending from the Helicosphaera compacta nannofossil Zone (CNE21) to the Reticulofenestra umbilicus Zone (CNO2). The Bc of Clausicoccus subdistichus coincides in northeastern Tunisia with the extinction of hantkeninids and is thus used here to define the Eocene/Oligocene boundary (EOB) at 34.03 Ma. Calcareous nannofossil assemblages suggest a significant change from oligotrophic/warm surface waters during the late Eocene to eutrophic/cool waters during the early Oligocene. The observed changes in trophic conditions are synchronous with a shallowing trend testified by an increase in nearshore species and enhanced terrigenous input. Major environmental changes occurred at the EOB and across glaciation event Oi‐1a whereas we record a poor imprint of glaciation event Oi‐1. Three orbital configurations have been distinguished: (1) The late Eocene is characterized by a prominent 405‐kyr cycle and a weak obliquity component; (2) the onset of cooling at 34.35 Ma coincides with the rosette‐shaped discoaster extinction and is reflected by a shift toward enhanced obliquity and short‐eccentricity cycles. The installation of a fully developed AIS (event Oi‐1a, 32.75 Ma) shows the most pronounced obliquity imprint reflecting an increased influence of high‐latitude climate processes; (3) after 31.75 Ma, the obliquity decreases in coincidence with the return to a dominant long‐eccentricity cycle. The Campanian age (Late Cretaceous) is characterized by a warm greenhouse climate with limited land-ice volume. This makes this period an ideal target for studying climate dynamics during greenhouse periods, which are essential for predictions of future climate change due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Well-preserved fossil shells from the Campanian (±78 Ma) high mid-latitude (50 ∘ N) coastal faunas of the Kristianstad Basin (southern Sweden) offer a unique snapshot of short-term climate and environmental variability, which complements existing long-term climate reconstructions. In this study, we apply a combination of high-resolution spatially resolved trace element analyses (micro-X-ray fluorescence – µ XRF – and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry – LA-ICP-MS), stable isotope analyses (IRMS) and growth modeling to study short-term (seasonal) variations recorded in the oyster species Rastellum diluvianum from the Ivö Klack locality. Geochemical records through 12 specimens shed light on the influence of specimen-specific and ontogenetic effects on the expression of seasonal variations in shell chemistry and allow disentangling vital effects from environmental influences in an effort to refine paleoseasonality reconstructions of Late Cretaceous greenhouse climates. Growth models based on stable oxygen isotope records yield information on the mode of life, circadian rhythm and reproductive cycle of these extinct oysters. This multi-proxy study reveals that mean annual temperatures in the Campanian higher mid-latitudes were 17 to 19 ∘ C, with winter minima of ∼13 ∘ C and summer maxima of 26 ∘ C, assuming a Late Cretaceous seawater oxygen isotope composition of - 1 ‰ VSMOW (Vienna standard mean ocean water). These results yield smaller latitudinal differences in temperature seasonality in the Campanian compared to today. Latitudinal temperature gradients were similar to the present, contrasting with previous notions of "equable climate" during the Late Cretaceous. Our results also demonstrate that species-specific differences and uncertainties in the composition of Late Cretaceous seawater prevent trace element proxies (Mg/Ca , Sr/Ca , Mg/Li and Sr/Li) from being used as reliable temperature proxies for fossil oyster shells. An atlante is a corbel figure (or pillar support) sculpted in the form of a man carrying a heavy load. A group of well-preserved stone carved atlantes from c. 1250 carrying the vaults of the Ribe Cathedral in western Jylland, Denmark, represents the antique titan Atlas and are up to 150 cm high. Their obviously foreign origin has so far remained uncertain. The figures are made of a relatively soft, sandy limestone. A new nannofossil analysis of small chips of the chalky and sandy limestone narrows the age of the stone down to the late Campanian (Late Cretaceous). Upper Campanian sandy limestones of this type are exposed in the Münster Basin in North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany. The Campanian Baumberger Sandstein in this region fits well with the atlantes in terms of lithology and age and is the only possible provenance of the stone. Around 1250 the Baumberger Sandstein was used for baptismal fonts as far north as Ostfriesland at the Dutch-German border, and it is a novel finding of this investigation that it even reached Denmark. The stone was most likely floated along the rivers Lippe and Rhine and shipped via the Wadden Sea to Ribe. The mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet has increased over the past 2 decades. Marine-terminating glaciers contribute significantly to this mass loss due to increased melting and ice discharge. Periods of rapid retreat of these tidewater glaciers have been linked to the concurrent inflow of warm Atlantic-sourced waters. However, little is known about the variability of these Atlantic-derived waters within the fjords, due to a lack of multi-annual in situ measurements. Thus, to better understand the potential role of ocean warming on glacier retreat, reconstructions that characterize the variability of Atlantic water inflow to the fjords are required. Here, we investigate foraminiferal assemblages in a sediment core from Upernavik Fjord, West Greenland, in which the major ice stream Upernavik Isstrøm terminates. We conclude that the foraminiferal assemblage is predominantly controlled by changes in bottom water composition and provide a reconstruction of Atlantic water inflow to Upernavik Fjord, spanning the period 1925–2012. This reconstruction reveals peak Atlantic water influx during the 1930s and again after 2000, a pattern that is comparable to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The comparison of these results to historical observations of front positions of Upernavik Isstrøm reveals that inflow of warm Atlantic-derived waters likely contributed to high retreat rates in the 1930s and after 2000. However, moderate retreat rates of Upernavik Isstrøm also prevailed in the 1960s and 1970s, showing that glacier retreat continued despite a reduced Atlantic water inflow, albeit at a lower rate. Considering the link between bottom water variability and the AMO in Upernavik Fjord, and the fact that a persistent negative phase of the AMO is expected for the next decade, Atlantic water inflow into the fjord may decrease in the coming decade, potentially minimizing or stabilizing the retreat of Upernavik Isstrøm during this time interval. Detailed facies analysis of a 350 m long core of upper Campanian-Maastrichtian chalk at Stevns Peninsula, eastern Denmark, shows that four mudstone and wackestone chalk facies account for close to 95% of the succession, and that bioturbated mudstone chalk alone accounts for nearly 55% of the sediment. Sedimentation took place in deep water, below the photic zone and storm-wave base, and is characterized by decimetre to metre-scale variations in facies and trace fossil assemblages indicating repeated shifts in depositional environment. Integration of facies with published data on sea-surface temperature and accumulation rates suggests that sea-surface temperature is the most important parameter in controlling stratification of the water column and thereby, indirectly, the observed variations in depositional facies. However, bioturbated mudstone chalk occurs in all stratigraphic levels independent of accumulation rates and sea temperatures and is interpreted to represent a very broad set of deep water environmental conditions with an ample supply of calcareous nannofossil debris and intense bioturbation. Longer term shifts in deposition are best expressed by distribution of clay, flint and bioturbated micro-wackestone, bioturbated wackestone and laminated mudstone chalk facies, whereas the trace fossil assemblages appear less useful. The data set indicates overall shallowing over time with two distinctive events of clay influx to the basin during the late Campanian-earliest Maastrichtian and late Maastrichtian. An integrated study of magnetic mass susceptibility (MS), bulk stable isotopes and calcareous nannofossil paleoecological changes is undertaken on the late Maastrichtian of the Elles section, Tunisia, spanning the last ca. 1 Myr of the Cretaceous. A cyclostratigraphic analysis reveals the presence of Milankovitch frequencies and is used for proposal of two distinct orbital age models and to provide ages of important stratigraphic horizons, relative to the age of the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (K-PgB). Principal component analysis (PCA) performed on the nannofossil assemblage reveal two main factors, PCA1, mostly representing fluctuations of D. rotatorius, P. stoveri, Lithraphidites spp., Retecapsa spp., Staurolithites spp., Micula spp., and PCA2, mostly representing fluctuations of A. regularis, C. ehrenbergii, Micula spp., Rhagodiscus spp., W. barnesiae and Zeugrhabdotus spp. Variations in PCA1 and PCA2 match changes in bulk δC and δO, respectively, and suggest changes in surface-water fertility and temperatures and associated stress. The variations in abundances of high-latitude taxa and the warm-water species Micula murus and in bulk δO delineate fast changes in sea-surface paleotemperatures. As in many other sites, an end-Maastrichtian greenhouse warming is highlighted, followed by a short cooling and an additional warm pulse in the last 30 kyr of the Maastrichtian which has rarely been documented so far. Orbital tuning of the delineated climatic events is proposed following the two different age models. Calcareous nannofossil assemblages highlight a decrease in surface-water nutriency, but their species richness remains high through the latest Maastrichtian, indicating, in Tunisia, a weak impact of Deccan volcanism on calcareous nannoplankton diversity before the mass extinction. The lithostratigraphy, calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy, carbon- and oxygen-isotope stratigraphy and gamma-ray profile are presented for the Skælskør-1 core, eastern Denmark. The correlation of carbon isotopes to Gubbio (Italy) and ODP Site 762C (Indian Ocean) provides the chronostratigrahical framework of the core through a tie to magnetostratigraphy. Two new carbon-isotope excursions are defined for the uppermost Maastrichtian of the core and prove useful for long-distance correlation. Twenty stratigraphic tie-points are used for correlation of the upper Campanian-Maastrichtian interval by combining carbon-isotope and gamma-ray variations. Significant dissimilarities in the gamma-ray profiles of the Danish Basin cores preclude the sole use of this tool for basin-scale correlations. Bulk oxygen-isotopes and semi-quantitative abundance changes in the warm-water calcareous nannofossil Watznaueria barnesiae and the cool-water Kamptnerius magnificus highlight the following past changes in sea-surface temperatures ( SSTs): relatively warm late Campanian SSTs, cooling across the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary and through the early Maastrichtian, warming across the early-late Maastrichtian transition, cooling in the late Maastrichtian, intense warming in the latest Maastrichtian chron C29r, followed by a very short episode of cooling immediately before the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary. The Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE; ∼183 million y ago) is possibly the most extreme episode of widespread ocean oxygen deficiency in the Phanerozoic, coinciding with rapid atmospheric pCO2 increase and significant loss of biodiversity in marine faunas. The event is a unique past tipping point in the Earth system, where rapid and massive release of isotopically light carbon led to a major perturbation in the global carbon cycle as recorded in organic and inorganic C isotope records. Modern marine ecosystems are projected to experience major loss in biodiversity in response to enhanced ocean anoxia driven by anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases. Potential consequences of this anthropogenic forcing can be approximated by studying analog environmental perturbations in the past such as the T-OAE. Here we present to our knowledge the first organic carbon isotope record derived from the organic matrix in the calcite rostra of early Toarcian belemnites. We combine both organic and calcite carbon isotope analyses of individual specimens of these marine predators to obtain a refined reconstruction of the early Toarcian global exogenic carbon cycle perturbation and belemnite paieoecology. The organic carbon isotope data combined with measurements of oxygen isotope values from the same specimens allow for a more robust interpretation of the interplay between the global carbon cycle perturbation, environmental change, and biotic response during the T-OAE. The duration of polarity Chron C31r is estimated with a cyclostratigraphic approach. Two sites are investigated: ODP Site 762 (Indian Ocean) and the Contessa Highway section (Gubbio, Italy). Cyclostratigraphic analysis is performed on greyscale variations (Site 762) and magnetic susceptibility variations (Contessa section). Both sites reveal an astronomical control of the sedimentation, highlighted by the identification of all the orbital periodicities. Cyclostratigraphic signals are tuned on 405 ka eccentricity cycles extracted from the La04 astronomical solution. This paper is dedicated to the connection, by a provider, of multiple groups of nodes spread over a network. The role of the provider is to interconnect the members of every group. For this purpose, it must distribute the available links of the network between the groups. The general aim then is to allocate these links in such a way that the communications latencies in the allocated structure are equivalent to the ones in the original (full) network for each group. We study two approaches constructing structures preserving the maximum latency (called the diameter). Unfortunately we show that the associated optimization graph problems are difficult (one cannot be approximated by a constant and the other is NP-complete). Due to these difficulties we relax the constraint on the diameter and propose to construct a unique tree connecting all the groups together. This paper is devoted to the following incremental problem. Initially, a graph and a distinguished subset of vertices, called initial group, are given. This group is connected by an initial tree. The incremental part of the input is given by an on-line sequence of vertices of the graph, not yet in the current group, revealed on-line one after one. The goal is to connect each new member to the current tree, while satisfying a quality constraint: the average distance between members in each constructed tree must be kept in a given range compared to the best possible one. Under this quality constraint, our objectives are to minimize the number of critical stages and the number of elementary changes of the sequence of constructed trees. We call "critical" a stage where the inclusion of a new member implies heavy changes in the current tree. Otherwise, the new member is just added by connecting it with a (well chosen) path to the current tree. In both cases, updating a tree implies a certain number of elementary changes (that we define). We propose a strategy leading to at most O(log i) critical stages (i is the number of new members) and to at most a constant average number of elementary changes per stage. We also prove that there exists situations where Ω(log i) critical stages are necessary to any algorithm to maintain the quality constraint. Our strategy is then worst case optimal in order of magnitude for the number of critical stages criterion and induces a constant number of elementary changes in average per stage. The early Eocene (c. 56 - 48 million years ago) experienced some of the highest global temperatures in Earth's history since the Mesozoic, with no polar ice. Reports of contradictory ice-rafted erratics and cold water glendonites in the higher latitudes have been largely dismissed due to ambiguity of the significance of these purported cold-climate indicators. Here we apply clumped isotope paleothermometry to a traditionally qualitative abiotic proxy, glendonite calcite, to generate quantitative temperature estimates for northern mid-latitude bottom waters. Our data show that the glendonites of the Danish Basin formed in waters below 5 °C, at water depths of <300 m. Such near-freezing temperatures have not previously been reconstructed from proxy data for anywhere on the early Eocene Earth, and these data therefore suggest that regionalised cool episodes punctuated the background warmth of the early Eocene, likely linked to eruptive phases of the North Atlantic Igneous Province. The early Eocene was characterized by exceptionally high global temperatures and no polar ice. Here, clumped isotope paleothermometry of glendonite calcite from the Danish Basin shows that these were formed in waters below 5 °C, indicating that regionalised cool episodes punctuated the background warmth of the early Eocene.
